It was a great, great Indiana State Fair. We saw Garrison Keillor, Indigo Girls (lower right), CCR, knights jousting (lower left), hot air balloons glowing at night (above left), the Indiana Bicentennial Train (left, two BRG photos are displayed inside!), two miniature farms, ate corn dogs, sausages, beef sundaes, and spiral-cut potatoes, rode the soy biodiesel tractor shuttle around and around (below), and saw a nearly 1100 pound pumpkin. Left: After retiring from Indianapolis Public Schools, Gazette reader Peg Simpson won a 2nd place ribbon for her hand-pieced, hand-quilted king sized quilt she has been working for the past 3 years. The pattern is called Cathedral Window. It is a compilation of the many fabrics she has used over the years.
Banner Artist of the issue The banner artist of this issue is Tori Weyers. Tori is a fine artist and designer specializing in mixed media, screen printing, and abstract painting. She received her BFA at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and has a passion for creating work that engages and delights the viewer with rich visual narratives, strong composition and unique subject matter. She’s been a featured artist in Art Journaling magazine and has been featured in gallery shows throughout the Indianapolis area. She is a featured artist at the Sideshow Art and Auditorium gallery in downtown Indianapolis and she teaches mixed media and printmaking at the Indianapolis Art Center as well as project classes at the Nickel Plate Gallery in Noblesville. alan@broadripplegazette.com The July 28 public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s Land Use and Development Committee had four items on the agenda. Only item A below was before the committee for a vote. The others were for information only. A. 6503 Carrollton Avenue, Mark Demerly and Charles Mong regarding a variance of development standards to provide for a 700-square foot building addition with three on-site parking spaces, with maneuvering within the right-of-way of the north-south alley (ten off-street parking spaces required, maneuvering not permitted in the right-of-way). Petition #2015-DV1-031 Hearing Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. This item was also presented in June. The size of the addition grew by about 300 sq. ft. since that meeting. The business is JW Salon [C3 on map]. The BRVA committee voted to support this proposal. B. 834 E. 64th Street, Chris Chabenne, Tarek Mercho, to give an update regarding Sangrita and the installation of a walk-in cooler behind the building. Sangrita [D4 on map] opened in June. They have discovered that they need a walk-in cooler. The cooler will go in the existing east-west driveway, along with a deck extension that will accommodate 15 to 20 additional diners. C. 806, 808, 812, 888 E. 66th Street, Mark Demerly regarding changes in ownership and an update on the development. Michael Kosene explained that his upcoming apartment project has been sold to the J.C. Hart Company. Improvements to the original proposal include a fitness center, and resident lounge. D. 902 E. 64th Street, Public Greens, Kelsey Behl to explain the installation of a shade structure over the outdoor dining patio. Public Greens [D5 on map] is installing a shade structure over the patio that will include lighting and infrared heaters. The s-shaped slats can be rotated to protect the patrons from rain. The next scheduled public meeting for the committee is Tuesday, August 25 at 6pm at the Indianapolis Art Center.

Art vs. Art: Paint Day and Main Event
Paint Day: Saturday, 8/29 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Art vs. Art Main Event: Friday, 9/25 9 p.m-12 a.m., doors open at 8 p.m. Primary Colours is pleased to present Art vs. Art Paint Day occurring at the historic Irving Theater. In preparation for the Art vs. Art Main Event, artists will be creating a masterpiece in a four hour time period utilizing identical equipment supplied by Prizm: a canvas, brushes, and acrylic paint. Artist registration for the event is now open (www. primarycolours.org), artists can register early and save $5 or pay $20 the day of Paint Day. The public is invited to participate in the festivities by cheering on the artists as they paint and enjoying the Sun King beer available for purchase. The completed works of art will compete for the $4,000 prize awarded at the end of the Art vs. Art Main Event on September 25 at the Vogue Theater in Broad Ripple. Between September 11 and September 24, the public is invited to vote for their top three works located on the Art vs. Art website (artvsart.net) to determine the works of art that will make it to the Main Event. On the night of Art vs. Art, audience votes will decide which paintings will survive and which will face the wheel of death and be destroyed unless purchased at the on-the-spot auction at the last minute before destruction. The last remaining painting will be named the 2015 winner of Art vs. Art for all of the glory and the cash prize. The Irving Theater is located at: 5505 E. Annual Meridian-Kessler festival returns for its 7th year
Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), a parish on the north side of Indianapolis, will host its seventh annual IHM Neighborhood Fall Kick-Off Fest on August 29 from 4-11 p.m. in the IHM parking lot, located at 5692 Central Ave., Indianapolis, 46220. Open to the public, around 2,000-3,000 attendees are expected. The festival will feature local food and drink vendors such as Fat Dan’s, Mama Carolla’s, Sam’s Gyros, Brugge Brasserie, Flying Cupcake, a beer garden hosted by Monarch Beverage Company, wine, Flat12 craft beer and more. There will be live music including the Dugan Brothers Band and headliner Greta Speaks. Attendees can purchase a kid’s wristband ($10 for children ages 6 and under; $15 for children ages 7 and up) that allows them to enter the Kid Zone with inflatables, a dunk tank, a cake walk, kids’ games and more. Admission is $1 per person for attendees 21 and older, and all proceeds go directly to the parish. Attendees under 21 get in free. In celebration of the Fall Kick-Off Fest, IHM will host the 6th Annual 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by The National Bank of Indianapolis, at 9 a.m. on the day of the festival. Participants can preregister online before Friday, August 28 for $15 per person or $50 for families (4-6 members) on IHM’s website. Race day registration is $20 and begins at 8 a.m. Children ages 6 and younger can participate for free. All participants will receive a race t-shirt.

Local composer releases locally recorded album
Local Indianapolis composer/pianist Barbara Graff releases her new instrumental album, “Pergola,” featuring local Indy flavor. “Pergola” includes a fun song titled “Broad Ripple Blues,” a fusion of contemporary piano and traditional blues, along with 14 other contemporary piano compositions. The title track, “Pergola,” expresses the beautiful canopy of vines that inspire this namesake song. Another composition, “Cataract Lake,” was inspired by the area around Cataract Falls in Cataract, Indiana, located an hour from Indianapolis. For even more local connections, the album was recorded with sound engineer Chris Lieber from Broad Ripple’s own RippleFX studio. In another coincidental ode to local flavor, Chris’ great-grandfather was the founder of the Indianapolis state park system, including the area around Cataract Falls where the song “Cataract Lake” was envisioned. (Lieber Recreation Area in Indiana is named after his great-grandfather). This is Barbara’s second instrumental album. She also composed and performed a holiday-themed single, “Christmas Magic,” released in December 2014 and featuring local vocalist and Butler University student Chloe Boelter. “Christmas Magic” was recorded at RippleFX studio in Broad Ripple, and mastered and mixed by Chris Lieber. Barbara’s music is featured on local station WITT radio, as well as several Internet radio stations including RAWA radio and Jango radio. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

IN THE SWIM: Where you can or should be able to swim in the Ripple The outdoor swimming season was cut short again when IndyParks again closed the Broad Ripple Park Pool on August 2. As reported last edition, the Jordan Y now sells daily passes to non-members which means for the first time so you can use the facility including the outdoor pool until Labor Day. Previously you had to be with a member to access the facility. Passes are $10 per person and $18 per family. You can also join the Y. Their membership rates are based on your income. Other Broad Ripple pools are still closed to the public. North Central High School’s pool briefly allowed public use at certain hours a few years ago but stopped the practice. (When I lived in Michigan, all the high schools had adult swim hours. This policy should be re-visited.) This is a great, newlyremodeled facility. I understand certain Master’s swim groups use it, however. The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired briefly allowed Masters’ groups to use their pool many years ago. Other places to swim: You can use the pool at LA Fitness ($15/day or join for about $30/month) in Glendale. The Carmel High School pool is open to the public certain hours every day of the year. Finally, the Monon Center pools in Carmel are also open to the public and their outdoor pool (the latter of which is open to Labor Day) is a great option located on the Monon Trail.

Varsity football season opens The Broad Ripple High School Boys Varsity Football season is underway. They play Evansville North on August 28. (See picture of Assistant Coach Rodney Lett, star running back Reginald Soriano, and Coach Jerod Kienitz.)
Adopt a rescued pet at the Farmer’s Market You can adopt a rescued dog or cat at the Farmer’s Market. We caught up with Paula Puntenney of the Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership at the Market recently. They are at the market the 2nd and 4th Saturdays. Cats under 4 months can be yours for $100 while those over 4 months are $50. All pets are vet checked for healthiness, current on vaccinations, spayed or neutered, and micro-chipped. Recovered (rescued) dogs are also featured. Many had been neglected or abandoned. 80% of the dogs come from the Indianapolis Animal Care which has to euthanize 20 healthy animals each day due to space and supply constraints. Summer Food Trucks, gardening, and daffodils in August Thursday night food trucks continue through September at Holliday Park. Why cook when you can enjoy the park and enjoy food truck delights. Also, help garden with the Labor and Learn Workshops Friday mornings. Labor and Learn Garden Workshops: The first Friday of every month, horticulturalist Chris Turner will includes a discussion of a popular gardening topics during the break as you help clean up the park doing two hours of volunteer gardening. August 28, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and every other Friday after that. The Indiana Daffodil Society annual plant sale will be August 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Art Center Open House a Hit Were you one of the thousand people at the Art Center Open House on August 7? They had it early this year in case you wanted to sign up for one of their fall classes (registration now open). They had a pop-up learn to paint class and a great glass blowing demonstration. Sights and Sips as Summer Sizzles First Friday in August took me first to Gallery 924 downtown to see how artist Jerome Neal “sees” the city. His show “Circle City 360” captures a number of popular and hidden views of Indianapolis on a canvas brimming with color, collage and even some glitter. His mixed media painting of Broad Ripple captures the old school feel of the village as a place of peace and harmony. From 924, I went to The Landmarks Center to see photographer Mark Sheldon’s incredible collection of Indiana jazz legends past and present. “The Naptown Scene” is a collection of black and white photos accompanied by a paragraph or two of information. The combination sizzles and makes the perfect appetizer for the upcoming Indy Jazz Fest next month. Many of those shows take place in the Broad Ripple area with the FREE pub creep performances plus a variety of acts at the Jazz Kitchen. Then it was up to Fountain Square to see the artist throwdown between old and new, The Hoosier Salon vs IMOCA (Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art) . Many of you remember that the Hoosier Salon was located in Broad Ripple for years before its recent move to Carmel. On this First Friday night, HS gallery manager Richard Anderson selected a handful of his best, and Paula Katz, Exec. Director of IMOCA, mixed them with a handful of IMOCA artists. The show at the Murphy Building was visually compelling in tone, color, and flair. Wine was served at all locations. But it has been the twilight time wines I’ve savored with friends lately that have left the best impression on my palate. Linen Sauvignon Blanc is from all places, Washington State. Its tangy, white grapefruit aromas and flavors make the perfect patio sipper as the hot hazy days of Summer continue. Soleil Pomegranate Mimosa is a one stop shop for juice and fizz. Low in alcohol and a bottle cap closure, makes a great post-bicycle ride refresher or even better brunch beverage. I shared with friends on a porch and we all agreed it would be delish paired with a chorizo studded omelet or the Bee Sting or Lingonberry Torte from Perk Up. Jill A. BRHS Class of 1955 held its 60th reunion
The Broad Ripple High School Class of 1955 held its 60th reunion at The Riviera Club on August 8. There were over 50 in attendance for a buffet dinner. BRHS Alumni Association president Judd Cromer thanked the class for their recent donation to the scholarship fund.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 2 in the center section of the easy puzzle that contains 1-3-5-9. The 2 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 1. The 2 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The only place left is between the 3-5. You have now learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. Response to Elizabeth Flynn Letter to Editor Aug. 7 - 20 Issue I take issue with Elizabeth Flynn: “What happened to Broad Ripple Village?” According to her, BRV resembles Detroit, Beirut, or a “war zone.” Not so; I have traversed all streets and spot no abandoned cars, couches lining sidewalks, potholed streets, or spent addict needles, ala Detroit. And I can’t find collapsed roofs, burned out buildings, spent ammo cartridges, or emaciated dogs, as in Beirut. Maybe a weed here and there – but greatly outnumbered by flowers, with all shops and houses well maintained or attractively signed and painted, and even

Sticker Shock? I’m sure you are probably familiar with the song “Shake it off” by the artist Taylor Swift. The chorus uses the line “Haters, gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.” Well, this is the general topic of this article. While perusing the Internet the other day I found an article that was bashing the use of the common running bumper stickers such as 13.1 or 26.2, which signify that the driver has completed at least one half or full marathon distance. It went on to explain that most runners choose the sport as a way to parade themselves on the roads to look superior to others and are constantly patting themselves on the back for their accomplishments. Yes, yes, there are certainly people like that out there. For example, when I fly to Boston for the marathon, about half of the plane is adorned in a race shirt, clutching their water bottles while reading a running magazine. I purposely do not do this and my husband, routinely looks at me with a half rolled eye because every overheard conversation on the plane is about personal bests, chafing, energy gels, etc. And I get it….but this article got me thinking; don’t most of us have something that we are passionate and proud about that we want to share with the world? And what if the flight were going to Indianapolis for the GenCon? Is there any doubt all of the conversations would be about gaming and wizardry? People with common hobbies find it interesting to share their experiences with like-minded people regardless of the hobby, right? Just look at Facebook. Open up ANY of your friends’ pages and I am willing to bet you will very quickly find out what drummer they beat to. Whether it be a proud parent, a cat lover, an avid traveler, a musician, a selfie junkie, or (god forbid) a runner, it is quickly apparent of his or hers lifestyle. Why is posting a picture of your child holding a sign about starting Kindergarten any better than someone sharing a finishing photo of a race? Both are positive accomplishments and it should just be left at that. Yes, a small minority can get arrogant about their athletic abilities but I assure you this isn’t the norm. As the saying goes, “one bad apple can ruin the bunch”. As for the bumper stickers; why is it worse to have these stickers than any of the following? • A cartoon decal of an entire family • Political statements/preferred candidates • Religion • Whether or not one likes the NRA • If a child made the honor roll • A favorite music group • Vegan or vegetarian • What kind of pet you have I read a few reactions to the article and many people said that the stickers actually help to motivate them to get or stay active. I have had many clients that worked really hard to earn a sticker such as these so I don’t blame them for choosing to use them. There are A LOT bigger problems to worry about than someone giving themselves a small pat on the back for completing a goal. Honestly, those that are bothered by them should buy one of the stickers that read “0.0” to express their opinion. I have seen several of these and they make me laugh! Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter ‘School Days, School Days’ Back-to-school time was a milestone when I was growing up. Summer had waned, Labor Day had been observed, and playing outdoors had become repetitive. Early September could be a bit warm, but often as not, we would get a cool spell to remind us that fall was coming. So how was it so different from back-to-school today? Well for one, everyone went back at the same time. Even the Catholic schools were usually on the same schedule as the public schools. The first day was usually a half day. We braced ourselves to sit in a hard seat attached to a desk with a hole for the ink well. We generally sported new clothes for that first day of school. Girls wore skirts and blouses, a sweater for cool days and white socks with either penny loafers or black and white saddle shoes. Many of us had fresh perms in our hair with a pretty headband or ribbon to finish off that carefully planned first day’s appearance. Boys would be decked out in a plaid shirt and cotton or corduroy pants. No jeans to be seen. Only farmers wore jeans! Keds (tennis shoes) were only worn in gym class, so the boys wore more of a dress shoe. Remember tan or white bucks? Getting ready for school often meant a trip to Stout’s Shoe Store downtown. Our wardrobes were limited, usually a change of clothes for five days. We went to L.S. Ayres or Wm. H. Block to get several skirts and blouses unless you had to wear hand-me-downs from a sister. Fashion was not practiced in grade school, and brands were unheard of. It was not until high school when the Roderick St. John label in clothes was coveted. store would deliver our boxes to our home. It was always something to have the truck with the big L.S. Ayres sign pull up and make that special school delivery. We didn’t use backpacks. The load of school books was not as heavy as today. We didn’t have computers, phones, magic markers, or calculators. We carried a notebook with carefully labeled sections, maybe a folder and pencils for daily work and ink pens for turn-in work. I think our loads had to be lighter because we walked to school in the morning, home for lunch, back again for the afternoon, and home again in the evening. Yes, older citizens of Indianapolis walked in 12 inches of snow when it was 2 below or in driving wind From 1970, Mrs. Horner’s class at School 80. and rain. We were eager to see newcomers. There was not as much moving in those days so we probably knew 95% of our classmates. We also held out hope that we would really like our teacher. Each year I followed my brother so I usually knew the reputation of a teacher. Luckily, I had some of the best teachers and loved school. Another interesting thing about our school was that we had 1A/1B, 2A/2B, on so forth. Students could begin in January or they could be promoted or held back by just one semester. One year I happened to be in a 3B/4A class. I left the next year to attend a county school and found I was really far ahead because I learned many 4th grade skills. (Oh! The pluses of a one-room school house!) School life was uncomplicated -- days were filled with learning, reports, graham cracker and milk breaks, stashing belongings in a cloak room, and playground fun. There were few extracurricular activities, usually only playing in our neighborhood or a possible music or dance lesson. We were not over programmed and had time to think and absorb our lives.
