Part Two ERRATA: In part one I had a typo for the date when Broad Ripple was platted. It should have been 1837. Back on topic, the dam is a 300 foot wide, 8 foot tall timber structure. According to Ed Malone, the dam was built with untreated timbers and was designed to allow some water to flow through the dam, keeping the timbers from decaying. The timber structure was constructed and back-filled with ballast that includes rock and soil (see cross section diagram above). That original 1836 timber structure is still intact. Several additions have been installed over the past 185 years, including a concrete facing and base built prior to 1921, and a concrete apron downstream of the dam added in 1925. The concrete structures were refurbished in 1959 and again in the summer of 2013.
Banner Artist of the issue The banner artist of this issue is Yuri Duncan. The banner features the old climbing gym rockets that were at Broad Ripple Park for many years. Yuri Duncan has lived in and around the Broad Ripple village for most of his life. One of his earliest memories is seeing Goldfinger with his father at the Vogue back when it was still a movie theater. As a young 8 year old, he once rode his Big Wheel from the Broad Ripple Apartments to the Park, just to play on the rockets. Yuri and his wife have been home owners in the village for the last 22 years. Yuri has been an illustrator since he was a little kid, and still draws inspiration from science fiction, super heroes and rock & roll. Since the 90s, Yuri has co-published local fanzines in the area, created CD covers and rock posters for local bands, and published mini-comics of his own. Most recently he is focused on standalone illustrations, each telling their own fantastic story. Yuri plans to publish his first ongoing comic book series, MegaOmega, in 2016. The dam is located at about 65th Street. It backs up the water flowing south down the White River (actually north in this short oxbow section of the river) and forces it into the man-made canal, about 50 feet upstream. Just to the east of the crumbing concrete bridge over the canal at Westfield Boulevard are the headgates of the canal. The headgates are a series of adjustable shut-offs. The tall rods attached to the gates can be seen sticking up as you drive past on Westfield. They can be adjusted to open the flow from the river or to shut it off. The gates have been retrofitted to allow for remote control of the water flow entering the canal. In my tour of the White River treatment facility at 16th Street, plant operator Leah Samson showed me the computer monitors and controls she uses to maintain the

In 2008/9 the Army Corps of Engineers raised the gate operators so they would be the same height as the new levee system. This involved temporarily bypassing the headgates with large pipes. The 56 and 5700 block of Broadway had a combined block party celebrating Labor Day on Sunday September 6th. Pulled pork and pulled chicken was catered by Black Diamond BBQ (64th/ Binford) while the neighbors pitched in and brought salads, and desserts. photo and text by Terra Pickett Broadway’s very own Nick Zyromski and his band played while neighbors visited, meeting new faces on the block. We were joined by the men of Fire Station 16 who came as our guests for dinner. The children had fun seeing the fire truck, playing kick ball in the street, blowing bubbles and dancing to the music. The adults had a fun and friendly corn hole tournament. The evening was a big success getting neighbors out of their homes and a chance to build community among those who live on our streets.

Random Ripplings
IndyGo Red Rapid Transit recently held an information session at the Indianapolis Art Center, 820 67th Street [A4 on map]. There were posters explaining how the proposed trackless transit system would work. There were aerial photos with superimposed routes and stations of the entire phase one that would go from University of Indianapolis to 67th and College (the BR Ave and College station section is shown below). Attendees were able to speak directly with the system’s designers to express concerns and get answers about the design. For example, it was explained why there could be a station at 52nd and at 54th. In this part of College the stations either had to be too close or too far apart, they opted for too close. More pictures at www.broadripplegazette.com

The water company building directly to the north of the headgates is a two-bay garage. This stores equipment used by the patrolmen. These patrolmen report to Edwin Morris and monitor the canal daily. They check for any trouble, such as objects in the water, chemical spills, heavy weeds, trees down, holes in the tow path, and they check the manual staff gages that show the level of the water in the canal. Most of the gages along the length of the canal have been replaced with automatic, remote-readable gages. These are housed in aluminum boxes on

several canal bridges. An optical sensor determines the water level and reports it to the plant operator at 16th Street. It is critical for the plant operator to maintain the proper levels in the canal to keep the flow sufficient to supply the treatment plant. In the winter the flow is increased to control ice that can form on the surface. If ice is allowed to build up, it can crack and break apart creating an ice dam that could impede the flow. To eliminate the difficult task of manually clearing the canal of an ice dam, the flow is increased to keep the canal from freezing.

2015 Ripple Effect 4-Mile Run/Walk It was a hot, hot evening for the 9th annual Ripple Effect 4 mile run/ walk held on September 6. According to the Tuxedo Brothers website (www.tuxbro.com) there were 203 finishers. Their reported results: The top three male finishers: #1 Jesse Davis 20:16.5, #2 Andy Wilson 23:11.1, and #3 Ryan Loiselle 23:19.1, all from Indianapolis. The top three female finishers: #5 Anne Clinton of Indianapolis 24:16.6, #16 Andrea Reifeis of Carmel 25:52.4, and #19 Sydney Hartwick 27:07.1

The Broad Ripple Village Association stated that, “The BRVA requested Citizens Energy Group routinely maintain the banks of the Central Canal in Broad Ripple Village. This meant the removal of invasive plants along the south bank between the Rainbow bridge and Monon Trail.”

Strugglers Reunion Show 2015 Sunday, October 4 The Rivera Club 5640 N Illinois St. - all-ages, 6:00 – 9:00 PM, $10
The Strugglers are holding their annual reunion show at The Rivera Club this year. There is plentiful parking and gobs of table seating, and a dance floor. The Strugglers are an iconic American roots band that started in 1969, performing a mixture of country, blues and jazz – some members claim that Sam Bush learned “new grass” from them. Eventually the band became the house band at the Hummingbird Cafe. Stanley Smith, the band’s lead singer, moved to Austin Texas in the late 1980s and has forged a wonderful career with the Asylum Street Spankers and his own band, The Jazz Pharoahs. To celebrate Stanley’s visit to Indianapolis, the band is reuniting for this special show. Jack Clarke, Dave Langfitt, Joe Langfitt, Kevin Hughey, and Scott Ballantine round out the lineup. There will be a cash bar and a Mexican buffet ($12.50) available. Reservations are not accepted, but the doors will open at 5:00 if you’d like to stakeout your favorite vantage point. -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Carmel Sym. Orch. 35th Annual Young Artist Competition
The Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO) announces the 35th Annual CSO Young Artist Competition, sponsored by the Steinway Piano Gallery (Clay Terrace, Carmel) and the CSO League. The winner will be featured at the Carmel Symphony Orchestra’s Family Fun! concert on January 31, 2016 in the Palladium. The winner also receives a $1,000 cash award. The First Runner-Up will receive $750 and Second Runner-Up receives $500. The CSO Young Artist Competition encourages young musicians from Indiana to compete with peers at the highest level of artistic excellence. Eligibility requirements include students up to and including Grade 12. Residency eligibility has been expanded to the entire state beginning with this year’s competition. This year’s Penrod Arts Fair lived up to its motto with sunshine, crisp fall temperatures, numerous dance and music performances, food, beverages and of course, art. I co-hosted a LIVE webcast from the WFYI Blues Stage that day. In between bands, I interviewed a dozen local arts and music experts plus a local craft beer and wine producer. Here are highlights from my three favorite conversations. CRAFT BEER: Fellow Broad Ripple resident, Sean O’Connor from Flat 12 Bierwerks let me sample “Penrod 22” the Kolsch style brew created for the event and named for the original 22 members of the Penrod Society. Fall exhibit opening reception set for September 25 On Friday September 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Indianapolis Art Center fall exhibit opening reception will be held. “Plain Airs” features a grouping of shows that examine how contemporary artists are reexamining traditional methodologies and techniques. Get out of the Ripple: Escape to Wisconsin You can’t beat a fall trip to the Badger State. The fall colors are spectacular on the rolling hills which are dotted with red barns. Visit Madison, the state capitol and home of the UW Badgers football team. Don’t miss Olbrich Gardens and the UW Arboretum. On Saturday, the farmers market on the Capitol Square is a must. In Milwaukee, visit the Art Museum over-hanging Lake Michigan. The Milwaukee Public Market is a gem. Travel to Milwaukee by bus or train (7 trains a day from Chicago take just 90 minutes and go 89 mph) and arrive at the new Inter-Modal Transit Station. Another must is Door County, a peninsula in Northeast Wisconsin located between Green Bay and Lake Michigan. (Did I forget to mention the Packers?) You can’t beat fall in Wisconsin, arguably the most beautiful state in the Midwest. Don’t forget to pick up some brats and cheese curds to bring home and sample the many micro-brews while you are there. Dear Alan: The wife and I visited BR on a whim today on our way up to Whole Foods on 86th. We had been once before, and remembered the ice cream at BRICS fondly. We were tickled to discover the “Vintage” Festival happening at the Park and enjoyed browsing the stalls and enjoying the music in the shade. And BRICS was well up to our memories: Cake Batter for her, Rainbow Sherbet for me. But the real treat was picking up the Gazette, bringing it home here to Illinois, and enjoying every page. What a delightful journal! You bring both professionalism and enthusiasm to it, and have assembled a great roster of guest writers with vivid, distinctive voices. I especially enjoyed Nora Spitznogle’s account of the Labor Day Street Fair, and C. W. Pruitt’s surprisingly moving paragraphs and poem on St. Herman. Bonus: I now know who Bobby Plump is, and have some new Sudokus to do as well. Wish we were closer so I could be a regular reader, but I will certainly make a point of, and look forward to, picking up another copy when next we visit Indy! Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 9 in the lower left section of the easy puzzle that contains 1-4-7-8. The 9 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the 3 spaces in the row between the 7-4 row and the 1-8 row. The 9 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the space between the 7-4. The only place left is between the 1-8. You have now learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Sticky Situation It’s science issue for this column! I like to take a question or comment from a client every so often and use it for my topic. Since it has been amazingly hot recently, I heard a lot of people (rightfully so) complaining about the humidity and how uncomfortable it makes them…especially during exercise. So, one day I asked a client if she ever wondered specifically why high levels of humidity are unbearable with physical activity. She looked at me a bit confused; her expression was saying “It just is.” So, I thought I would take the opportunity to explain just that. Back in college, I loved the class Exercise Physiology, because it explained SO many things that we just accept at face value…such as why we get sore, why some people get light headed during exercise, why high humidity stinks, why fitness can plateau, etc. That class truly gave me the appreciation for how the body reacts (or doesn’t) to activity and has abundantly helped me with my job and curious clients. So…back to my original topic. When you exercise, your body warms up and your body temperature increases. The body is amazing at self-regulating temperature, and when your temperature rises, your body’s cooling mechanism kicks in. The body re-directs blood from the deeper, more central parts of the body, like the internal organs, to your muscles and into the blood vessels that are closest to the surface of the skin causing you to sweat. Sweat is the body’s main mechanism to cool the body and is comprised of water and salt. It exits the body via the pores in the skin and when the air evaporates the water, the underlying blood is cooled. Therefore, if the air surrounding the body is humid, sweating becomes a less efficient way to cool the body. The higher the humidity, the less efficient sweating is. You know how when it’s quite humid you are soaked in sweat? That is sweat, sitting on your skin, unable to evaporate. It doesn’t evaporate because the air is already so saturated with water. When sweat can’t evaporate, it doesn’t cool off the body. Sweating in and of itself does not cool the body… so using a towel to wipe off sweat (while might be appreciated by others at the gym) does nothing to cool you. The body keeps pumping out sweat, but the body temperature does not drop. Because of this, exercise at any given level seems harder, but the muscles actually aren’t working any harder. And the heart has to work harder due to less water in the blood. So not only is the sweat not being evaporated to cool you but your heart is working overtime. Excessive heat and humidity can often lead to elevated body temperature, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Which in severe cases can lead to an array of health problems. Here’s a bit of history to go along with your project. The United States Post Office Department established our post office in 1850 and appointed Willima Ead the first postmaster. The location of this post office was quite controversial. Separated by the canal, the communities of Wellington on the south and Broad Ripple on the north each wanted the post office. Finally in 1884, the federal government settled the dispute, locating it in Wellington, but Broad Ripple was the name awarded to the post office. Because of this decision, the rival communities merged and incorporated as Broad Ripple. Another huge rivalry was between Indianapolis and Broad Ripple. Could the city annex the community? Indianapolis won, and on June 20, 1922, Indianapolis officially annexed Broad Ripple. Between 1922 and 1959 Broad Ripple grew because of city services from Indianapolis. Our post office was built in 1940. Other additions established in this era: a public library in 1930, School #80 in 1930, and the Vogue Theater in 1938. City directories of the period showed 100 businesses present in 1930 and 252 in 1951. Happy coloring. Check out your rendering after you are done by visiting the post office to compare your artwork.
