B E T T E R The sewage lift station at Broad Ripple Park.
Everything you always wanted to know about the canal... By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com
Part Five Continuing on with buildings that readers have asked about, we moved to back north in our talks. We started at Broad Ripple Park. I asked about the brick building at the north east corner of the park on Evanston. “That brick building is a lift station,” explained Ed Malone, Director of Water Production for Citizens. “It actually goes three or four levels down into the ground, it is a sewage lift station. And, it pumps sanitary sewage from the north east side of Indianapolis through a force main that basically comes down...kind of follows the Monon, to a large part, and comes down and dumps into the main sewer further downstream. It primarily picks up the sanitary sewage that is outside of the combined sewer district and pushes it into the main sewer system.” “You’ll notice it has chemical feed on the backside. You’ve probably seen the red stains, if you looked on the back of the building. And that’s because we feed iron, basically, ferric, at that location to minimize odors. That is why it doesn’t smell like a lift station. We keep the odors down by feeding ferrous material there.” I asked, “Is that what the Warfleigh building is also?” “No,” Ed responded, “Warfleigh… when you are going over the Meridian Street bridge over White River, if you look directly downstream, you’ll see a large pump station directly at the Meridian Street overpass, that is the Warfleigh Pump Station. Now, that is a storm water pumping station. We, through our United Water contract, oversee that still, but, that is a storm water pumping station, that is not sanitary pumping station. It is very large.” Followers of this canal series will remember that Ed explained earlier that if it is part of the sanitary system (water on the way to the treatment facility, The Warfleigh storm pumping station built in 1958. clean water and sanitary sewers), then it falls under Citizens. If it is storm water then is falls under the City of Indianapolis. This one in Warfleigh is more complicated. United manages the Warfleigh Storm Water Pump Station for the City of Indianapolis, but Citizens oversees United’s operation. Ed added, “That was created back after the floods in late 50s. You don’t want to be sitting on the outfall of that thing (in White River) when we start pumping out of it. You’ll end up a fairly good distance downstream.” Then I asked about the building south of Broad Ripple at Arsenal Park. It is at the corner of 49th and Haverford Avenue.

Better Block took over Broad Ripple Avenue on Saturday, October 17. Four empty shops were turned into pop-up shops. There were places to sit and enjoy food and coffee along the sidewalks. Right: Addie Hirschten, banner artist in Vol. 11 #17, painted in the old Scholar’s Inn. Below: BlueIndy had cars on display and offered free test drives and t-shirts.
Banner Artist of the issue The banner artist of this issue is Jeremiah Little. “As an artist living in So-Bro for almost 20 years now I feel like I’m living a dream come true! I’m creating art that is the culmination of many years’ work, I’m getting opportunities to show it regularly, and I live and work in a great place. I love the Broad Ripple community and I don’t know of another area in Indiana where so many artists, musicians, and awesome people live!” “I do many forms of art: tables, antique maps, and unique wall art. I like to mix it up so I never get bored. I use wood instead of canvas because I like how sturdy it is. Next I use mostly metallic paints for a nice shimmer. Finally I coat the piece with Epoxy to give it a glass shine. I love hearing the responses to my work as people experience them. “Truly unique” and “I have never seen anything like this before” are the number one responses I get at art shows.” “For my next show my art will be at Mass Ave. Wine the entire month of December! I will have lots of new pieces, including African Sunsets, Antique Maps and much more. Come see my unique pieces! I’d love to see you there!” For more information about Jeremiah, go to JeremiahStudios.com To celebrate the 11th year of the Broad Ripple Gazette we started featuring a year of local artists by allowing them to interpret our banner, while incorporating the words “The Broad Ripple Gazette”. A well water pump station at Arsenal Park.
“There’s a little water company building at Arsenal Park. A crane comes up occasionally, and then the crane tips itself up and does something to this building, and the roof comes off,” I said. Edwin Morris, Operations and Maintenance Supervisor for Citizens, answered, “That’s a well for the Fall Creek Water Treatment Plant. They supplement Fall Creek water, which is processed there. What you see with the crane… they come in to rehab the wells once every three years. They come in and clean the wells out. That’s why you see the crane out there removing the well head to do work... maintenance on the well.” “There are two wells there,” added Ed Malone. “And in Marcy Village, directly to the south of that, there are wells in there also. There are three wells in Marcy Village. Then there are additional wells around the Fall Creek treatment plant in addition to those.” “Very complicated,” I replied. I had no idea that the water company had ground wells around the city to get more fresh water! “So the rest of the water [for the treatment plant] comes out of Fall Creek?” Yes, the majority of the water for Fall Creek [treatment plant] comes out of

the [Fall] creek, but we use wells to supplement. Same here [at White River Treatment Plant], we have wells to supplement the flow with this facility. We have wells around this facility and around Riverside Station that pump to here, that we treat at this facility. So, even though we say there are surface water plants, they do have some ground water there,” responded Ed. I was further confused at this point because I had never thought about surface water and ground water as being different things. I soon realized that to the water company they are very different. Ground water isn’t on the ground, it is underground, in wells. Surface water is from creeks, streams, rivers and canals. This concluded the questions I had about various building seen around town. I moved the questioning back to the canal flow and its banks. In part 3 of this canal series I discussed the Eurasian milfoil weed that clogs the canal. I didn’t properly explain the harvesting. For many years the water company used weed harvester boats. These boats cut the weed and hauled it away. In 2013 they switched to dredging. I didn’t think that was possible without damaging the original 1836 clay lining of the canal bed. “I had been told that the bed of the canal is clay. Or was originally One of the weed harvesting boats used by Citizens in the canal to keep the flow high. clay,” I commented. “It still is,” Ed responded. “And that’s why it couldn’t be dredged, because it would be damaged. It seems like they’re dredging now,” I added. “We’re dredging,” said Ed. “We’re not going through the clay layer. What we’re

National Heritage Essay Contest deadline for participating nears The Broad Ripple Sertoma Club would like to announce that we are again sponsoring this important event. We want to make sure that all private and public schools in the Broad Ripple area are made aware of this contest, so we would like to include an open invitation to any school principal or 6th. grade teacher to contact us, as soon as possible at: jgadams97@comcast.net. The deadline for inclusion in this year’s contest is November 20th, 2015. Information for principals and teachers about the National Heritage Essay Contest: Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple has sponsored the National Heritage Essay Contest for over 30 years for sixth grade students in public, private and parochial schools in the Greater Indianapolis area. “What Freedom Means to Me” is the topic we ask students to address in their essays. We hope that the contest complements teachers’ efforts to develop their young students’ critical thinking and writing skills. We believe that participation in the National Heritage Essay Contest encourages students to better understand the founding principles of our country and to consider how those principles affect their lives today. All students in participating sixth grade classrooms are encouraged to write and submit essays. In the previous 4 years, 4195 students in 215 classrooms in 54 schools have participated in our National Heritage Essay Contest and a total of $19,000 in prizes has been awarded to winning students. Classroom participation period is late November through the first week of March. Teachers may use any portion of the allotted period for the essay contest. During March and early April our National Heritage Committee evaluates submitted essays and determines Classroom Winners, Finalists, Honorable Mention Recipients and Grand Prize Winners. A recognition luncheon for the three Grand Prize Winners will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016.
Rare Off-Site IMA Exhibit Discussion at Tarkington Tower
An Indianapolis Museum of Art exhibition that kicks off Indiana’s 2016 Bicentennial Celebration will be the topic of the IMA’s first-of-its-kind off-site exhibition discussion, free and open to the public, 7 p.m., Nov. 11 at Tarkington Tower, 4000 N. Meridian St. An important part of Hoosier history, the Gustave Baumann, German Craftsman –American Artist exhibit features 104 works by the renowned woodblock printmaker. The exhibition is scheduled for display Oct. 25-Feb. 14 in the IMA’s Allen Whitehill Clowes Special Exhibition Gallery. Exactly one century ago, the German-born artist put Brown County, Ind. on the national map with his evocative woodcuts of the picturesque scenery around Nashville, his temporary home base. Baumann’s inventive works, reinvigorating a centuries-old printmaking tradition, earned him a gold medal at San Francisco’s Panama-Pacific International Exposition. He would become the leading American color woodblock printmaker and a central figure in this aspect of the American Arts and Crafts movement. Gustave Baumann, German Craftsman – American Artist highlights the IMA’s unique collection of Baumann’s works on papers, assembled over the last century from the artist, his daughter, the late Ann Baumann, and various private donors. “As the first museum to acquire works by Gustave Baumann and as a regular exhibitor and collector of his works ever since, it is a fitting occasion to bring this collection—115 years in the making—to the public for the first time,” said discussion speaker Martin Krause, nationally recognized Baumann specialist and the IMA’s curator of prints, drawings and photographs.

Help the Red Key sign - GoFundMe campaign
The Red Key Tavern ...it’s legendary! And the neon sign is one of the most iconic neons in Indianapolis. Not to mention that the Red Key is one of the most famous and loved taverns in the country. www.redkeytavern.com This classic sign is more than 63 years old and is now in need of major repair. Mickey, the neon repair specialist says, “It’s so old I don’t think it’s fixable back to it’s iconic state. And even if I could fix part of it, there is no way to guarantee it will last for any length of time.” So there are two options and they both cost about the same...try to completely redo the original (complete makeover of everything) or construct a new sign that is absolutely identical to the original that will last for future generations to enjoy for the next 60+ years. So here is your chance to contribute to one of the 150 best bars in the country for 2015 (the only bar in Indiana) at #106 on the list...and by the way, Cheers Bar in Boston is #146...take that Sam Malone! So let’s collectively take this classic neon back to it’s original state. Give what you can. It all makes a difference. Please tell your friends. Thank you. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

City Council race election Nov. 3
E
by B il l M
It’s Kip Tew (D) facing Colleen Fanning (R) in City Council District 2. I reached out to both candidates for a statement on their vision for BR. Kip Tew: “Robin, Riley, Rusty (our dog) and I moved into Broad Ripple a couple of years ago because we love the Village. We love being able to walk to the grocery store, the drug store and all of the restaurants in BR. I have the fervor of a convert. I will be a constant advocate for Broad Ripple. We need to improve Broad Ripple Avenue so that it can rival Mass Ave. and Virginia Ave. The city has poured resources into those neighborhoods and Broad Ripple Ave and surroundings need some attention. Our sidewalks and streets have been ignored for much too long. I intend to be the councilor who helps to make that happen. I also want to work with law enforcement to make sure we have a safe village, it is the first priority of government, to make us safe and if people don’t feel safe they will seek out other places to live, shop, and entertain themselves that feels safer. So we need to be vigilant about that.” Details at kipTewforCouncil.com Collen Fanning: “I have lived in Broad Ripple Village for 11 years, the entirety of my adult life. My husband and I frequently joke that the only way we are leaving our home is feet first in a wooden box; we absolutely love living in Broad Ripple. I own and operate 2 small businesses, and my experience allows me to see things from the perspectives of both residential home owner and business owner. We need to support job creators as much as possible to keep the economy moving, and we need to grow in the right direction. My nonpolitical background gives me the advantage of evaluating issues based solely on their costs and benefits instead of the political gamesmanship and partisan strategy that has recently slowed our city’s progress. I see Broad Ripple as a cultural destination that is vibrant, diverse and family-friendly. Immediately, Broad Ripple needs serious infrastructure attention, and I know I can be a strong advocate with the city regardless of who wins the Mayoral election. While I am excited about adding mass transit options to make our city more sustainable and accessible, it is imperative that we thoughtfully consider the impact of each transit decision on residential neighborhoods. The Warfleigh floodplain issue is also something that I will prioritize with immediate action to create a lasting solution for our neighbors. I plan to live and work in Broad Ripple the rest of my life, and I am truly invested here. I would be honored to have the opportunity to be a strong, open-minded voice for our community. I believe my moderate views (which are
6520 Cornell Ave 317.253.2611 www.thebikeline.com
based in personal freedom and fiscal responsibility) are representative of both our district and my generation. I look forward to lending my skills of collaboration and innovation to the City Council to make Indianapolis an even better place to live and work.” Details at colleenfanning.com

Sausage, Suds & Sips
Perk Up Cafe/Brotgarten Artistry Bread & Pastries added more “Best” to its “WURST FEST” the past two Sunday afternoons. Each Sunday the cafe hosts a Koffee Klatsch with delectable slices of freshly made German cakes and pastries along with its house roasted coffee. The past two Sundays, Alice and Jeanette offered foot long savory German sausage served on house-made rolls along with craft beer and wine from Crush and Brew catering, and music by the Perk Up House band. People gobbled the sausages while they tapped their toes to the music. International recording artist Ben Davis was visiting the village on the 25th and spent some time jamming with the band. Craft beer fans raved about the Pumpkin Ale and German Wheat beer from Bier Brewing (located near 62nd/Binford). Two Argentinian reds and an elegant dry German Riesling kept the wine lovers sipping and smiling. The 2014 Dr Pauly Bergweiler offers up enchanting aromas and flavors of stone fruit (apricot, white peach) and a clean mineral finish. Fantastic with the Wurst Feast but also a great bottle for the bird, as Thanksgiving is just a month away. www.perkupindy.com

Broadcast Brew
Radio journalist Guy Raz host of NPR’s “Ted Radio Hour” visited Indy last week as part of WFYI’s “Listen Up!” event. For the occasion, Sun King Brewing created a special beer based on Guy’s likes and dislikes. Razberry Blindness was a brown English ale aged in Port wine barrels and infused with raspberries and cardamom. Sun King Brew Master Dave Colt created the recipe when he found out Guy prefers wine to water (the port wine barrel aging) likes to pickle vegetables (Dave created a “sour” style of fruit beer ) and spent time covering the Middle East (cardamom spice infusion).

Clue: R equals Y Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 9 in the left section of the top row which contains 1-3-4. The 9 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to left of the 1. The 9 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to both sides of the 3. The 9 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 3. The only place left is the upper-left-most square. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple by Laura Minor
Hallo-“ween” Tips Hello readers! Well, as October means many things to many people, to most (especially kids) it means Halloween. I read the other day that this holiday is the second highestgrossing behind Christmas, so obviously the numbers don’t lie. I love this holiday myself and honestly can’t remember a year that I haven’t dressed up. Yep I’m one of those people. ;) The best parts of Halloween of course are the parties and the candy. And the worst parts of Halloween for our waistlines and energy levels are the parties and the candy. Now, I am probably not going to tell you anything earth-shattering in this article, as they are similar to tips that I am sure you have all heard before. BUT, it is also nice to have friendly reminders to help stave off unwanted pounds and sugar (and other) hangovers, right? So here goes: • Buy candy the day before Halloween: Research show that just looking at food triggers our brain to imagine eating it. If you have bought candy already, keep it out of sight until that day. • Buy candy you don’t love: My husband was quite annoyed a couple of years ago when I bought a huge bag of suckers and hard candy. No desire there! If it’s not chocolate in some form, it’s not eaten in our house… • Follow a normal eating routine that day: Don’t save up calories for the candy. You will much more likely overdo it and since candy is low in protein and fiber, you won’t feel full quickly. • Give your kids a smaller bag: Less candy, less consumption for both them and you. • Walk the route: As long as you feel safe, avoid driving your kids around. Enjoy the scenery while burning calories. I am biased, but I think Meridian-Kessler is the BEST trick or treating neighborhood there is. • Workout in the AM: Exercising will allow you a little wiggle room for extra candy calories and put you in the right mindset to make healthy choices and stick with your Halloween battle plan. • Be the ‘Boring’ House: If you’re the kind of person who’ll eat whatever’s around, don’t set yourself up for failure by stocking up for trick-or-treaters. Consider buying non-candy goodies from a dollar store (temporary tattoos, toys, stickers, etc.) or healthier snacks, like little baggies of nuts or raisins. Yes, you might get some rolled eyes from neighborhood kids, but at least their parents will thank you! • Have a splurge strategy: In order to survive the holiday without derailing your diet, plan your splurges in advance. Make it really specific — for example, you’ll have no more than two fun-size bars or peanut butter cups per day. If you have a plan, you’re more likely to stay in control. • Ration the kid’s candy as well: Hopefully your kids won’t have a huge fit by this one. After they get home, let them keep their favorites and get rid of the rest. Then pack them one piece for lunch and one or two at dinner. The candy will last longer and no binging! Obviously this isn’t an all-inclusive list, but the general idea applies here as to all nutrition plans. Nothing is forbidden if it can be controlled in moderation along with activity. Halloween kicks off the holiday season so starting off on the right foot will arm you with good strategies to apply there as well. Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. The Broad Ripple Gazette
Vol. 12 No. 22
Oct 30 - Nov 13, 2015
Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Perspective Matters Today’s news would have us believing we are living in the worst of times. I don’t think so. We stand on the shoulders of those who have come before. Not having been present to their hardships, dangers, and suffering, it’s easy to think things are at their worst now. Our Broad Ripple community, despite its recent wave of crime, empty stores, and floods, has endured many perils and proven itself to be resilient time and again. Consider history: Base line - 1836 Canal construction begins, and in 1837 Jacob Coil plats 48 lots for Broad Ripple; Nelson plats 32 lots on the Canal’s south side naming it Wellington. Rivalry begins. 1839 - Indiana goes bankrupt; Canal building stops with only eight miles finished. 1847 - Flood destroys Burke’s Mill. 1851 - Local sawmill is abandoned and torn down; by now that portion of the original Village of Wellington has reverted to farmland. (Our Village’s first decline.) 1875 - Flood destroys the grist mill (one of the oldest standing structures) and a store. 1884 - Rivalry over the United States Post Office location ends when Wellington and Broad Ripple are forced by the Federal Government to locate the Post Office in Wellington but with the name of Broad Ripple. 150 residences begrudgingly merge. 1884 - Train bridge over White River collapses causing fatalities. 1885 - Levees collapse flooding the Village. 1889 - Broad Ripple Hotel burns. 1891 - Gas explosion destroys several businesses. 1896 - The pride of the community, Broad Ripple High School, burns. 1903 - Village floods. 1906 - Natural gas boom of 1896 ends. In 1898 there had been 102,987 barrels of natural gas tapped. 1908 - White City Amusement Park built 1906 burns to the ground (now Broad Ripple Park). 1922 - Broad Ripple residents lose their battle, and the Village is annexed into Indianapolis. 1956 - Monon Railroad ceases. 1957 - Parking meters are installed, ending free parking. 1962 - The Indianapolis Times observes that Broad Ripple is in a distressed period similar to days of the 1830s Canal failure. 1980 - IPS School #80 closes its doors. 1993 - The parking deck constructed in 1961 is closed and deemed structurally unsound. 1995 - Skateboarding is banned on Broad Ripple streets and sidewalks. 2013 - Crime rises in the Village. I hope I have made my point. We are not the first to encounter perils. Although times have been disturbing in the Village of late, this is a strong community that weathers adversity. It’s now our time as it will be for generations to do in the future -- stand together, hold on, and bend with life.
