McDonald’s donates piano to BRMHS music dept

Most Broad Ripple residents know the Yamaha grand player piano that has been on the small stage at the Broad Ripple McDonald’s. It was installed in January 2003 when the McDonald’s was remodeled with a Lavazza coffee bar in the front room. Since then, many musicians and students have played for the patrons. Recently McDonald’s donated the piano to the Broad Ripple Magnet High School music department. Thanks to Reginald Jones of McDonald’s for this generous gift.

Continuing on with dredging... “What we’re doing is removing the sediment that’s accumulated on top of the clay layer. So basically we’re taking the canal down to its original cross sections,” explained Ed Malone. “With a vacuum system?” I asked. Edwin Morris answered, “Yes, a vacuum dredging boat. It has a vacuum system that pulls the sedimentation through pipes, then they pump it through transfer pumps into the watering bags.” “Those are the large pumps on the canal bank with the fences around them? The pumps and all the black pipe that goes along the bank, with the stakes?” I asked. “Yes, they’re taking and pumping that a couple of miles to bags,” said Edwin. “They have bags staged up by the Riviera Club and also down by the Butler area. There are maybe eight to nine bags behind the Riviera Club.” Ed added, “The other set’s a little further down south of 52nd Street.” “South of 52nd, behind the athletic field, Butler’s athletic field,” said Edwin. “There’s not like a silt field anywhere, where you’re dumping the silt? I had heard it was behind Butler,” I asked. Ed responded, “No. I’m glad you asked that. Once the bags accumulate the debris that we handle, we let them de-water, or decant as much as possible, because

we’re trying to increase the solids concentration, so we’re not hauling water. And then we haul that debris material off-site for disposal.” I followed up, “Does any of this stuff have energy potential, all of this greenery you get out of the canal. Can you burn it or do anything to it to get energy? Seems like a potential from harvesting all this greenery.” Ed said, “It decomposes very rapidly. It is amazing the water content that this has.” This system, which has since been removed, included a dredging boat with a hose to the shore. Large pumps along the canal pumped the silt- and weed rootladen water through large plastic piping that ran along the waterline of the canal and exited in huge silt bags by the Butler athletic field and behind the Riviera Club. The clean water seeped through the bags and went back into the canal.

Local Author Will Autograph Book at Indy Reads Books

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Fanning bests Tew in squeaker to become new City Councilor Small business owner Colleen Fanning (R) defeated at-large city councilman Kip Tew (D) by just 176 votes (4,959 to Fanning, 4,783 for Tew) on November 3 in the District 2 city council rate which includes Broad Ripple. Libertarian Sam Goldstein got 360 votes. Congratulations to Colleen, Broad Ripple’s new City Councilor. (Will Gooden, our current city councilor, did not seek re-election).

Potts runs for vacant Senate seat RFRA author State Senator Scott Schneider (R) is not seeking re-election to the District 30 seat which includes Broad Ripple. His advocacy for RFRA spurred Keith Potts to seek the seat. Potts sent us the following statement: “To the readers of the Broad Ripple Gazette: I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Keith Potts, I live on the north side of Indy with my fiancé and our dog, and in 2016 I’m running for Indiana State Senate District 30. Whirlwind Wine Weekend Holy Corkscrews! Can you get carpal tunnel from opening wine bottles? Am starting to wonder as I “Monday Morning Quarterback” a busy weekend of pouring and talking about wine. *A Night at the Barre–Central Indiana Dance Ensemble Ballerinas, musicians and singers created an atmosphere of elegance and class. The wines served extended the homage to the arts by creating poetry in the glass. Villa Pozzi Moscato–lively, semi sweet white added a festive note to the night. Aveleda Vinho Verde–For many it was the first but not the last time to enjoy this dry Portugese white in their glass. Sombres Cabernet Sauvignon–This ultra smooth rich dry red from Chile wowed guests with its ability to perform alone in the glass and along side a plate of savory served appetizers. Septima Malbec–Nobody does Malbec better than Mendoza. The night introduced even more red wine drinkers to the big bold grape from this thriving wine region of Argentina. Bier Brewery–Craft beer fans quaffed fresh wheat and Belgium blonde ale from these local brewers. *REVENT: Indiana Recycling Coalition With the unique array of auction items, exquisite food buffet from DUOS, interactive “heads or tails” raffle AND the Dumpster Drummers, it might have been easy to miss the wines. But the hundreds gathered to raise money and awareness for a sustainable Indiana, did not. Bottles from one of Napa’s most established and celebrated wineries–Louis Martini–were happily consumed–and of course recycled. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Jill and doggyboy Harp live in Warfleigh, where she also consults and teaches in an effort to keep the doggyboy’s treat jar filled with biscuits and her freezer stocked with ice cream. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 6 in the middle section of the top row which contains 3-4-7. The 6 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left and right of the 7. The 6 in the center section eliminates the spaces to above and below the 3. The 6 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above the 7. The only place left is directly above the 4. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

A couple of months ago, I was contacted by a group called CHAARG at Butler University. This acronym stands for Changing Health Attitudes+Actions to Recreate Girls. This organization is directed toward college-aged females and its aim is to “liberate girls from the elliptical” by exposing them to the vast variety of fitness options out there. They do so by partnering with local studios once a week; “whether it be CrossFit, Pure Barre or salsa dancing–and everything in between”. CHAARG has 2,500 members nationally, and they are a supportive community promoting health and fitness. Started in 2012, it currently has chapters at 24 universities with a “Virtual Chapter” for girls that don’t have one at their university yet. Elisabeth Tavierne is CHAARG’s founder. On the website she explains her vision: “My goal is to bring CHAARG to every university in the United States–if not the world. Ultimately though my mission is to empower every CHAARG girl to be the best version of herself. While CHAARG focuses a lot on fitness, living a healthy lifestyle is so much more than the physical aspect. I hope that all of our members grow to embrace a healthy and happy lifestyle. I hope that they meet not only workout buddies but lifelong friends.” Wow, how do I wish this was around when I was in college! As a young female, before I studied fitness, I remember reluctantly going to the gym to get on the treadmill/elliptical and just doing the same boring routine day after day. Well, this group certainly doesn’t have that problem at all! Every Wednesday they are exposed to a brand new local trainer/ workout and for free of course! How jealous I am but also so excited that this program exists. Fitness SHOULD be fun and not a chore; and how awesome to build relationships in the meantime. So, last week So.Be.Fit.’s turn had come to work with CHAARG! My fantastic trainer Rosie Edwards volunteered to teach for us. She’s a great candidate to do so being a young 27 year old, a runner, and a Butler grad to boot. She taught 2 classes, the first had 24 girls and the second 14. I went by to check it out and it was very inspiring! The girls were working their butts off all while smiling and encouraging each other. Rosie was putting them through drills that seemed more like a game than exercise and they were having a ball. The participants varied in fitness level but not in attitude. All very upbeat and positive. If you are a parent of a female college student (or one yourself) I highly recommend joining CHAARG. There are an impressive 4 universities in Indiana including Indiana, Purdue, Ball State and Butler. But as previously mentioned, if her university doesn’t have a chapter, she can be a virtual member which includes accountability meeting, challenges, national events and fitgear.
