Hoops along the banks of the canal to help re-establish the vegetation.

Everything you always wanted to know about the canal...

Village zoning issues heard at January meeting By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com

By Alan Hague

There were three items on the agenda at the January public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s Land Use and Development Committee held at the Indianapolis Art Center.

alan@broadripplegazette.com

Part Ten For those readers just discovering this series on the canal now in its 10th part, I will explain why the canal is important and why the Gazette is doing this series. The dam that created the Central Canal was built on the White River in 1836 and the Town of Broad Ripple grew up around it. It is why we are here today. For years the canal has supplied the City of Indianapolis with 60% of its fresh water which is processed for our clean water supply.

During the summer when this interview was conducted there were large metal hoops and netting along several sections of the banks of the canal. The netting was intended to keep the waterfowl from going up and down the bank, damaging the vegetation. When the vegetation is gone, the soil erodes into the canal. When people feed the ducks this also encourages the ducks to go up and down, damaging the banks. “A lot of people ask me about the netting and the wire hoops for the geese, or whatever,” I followed up on the topic of erosion. “They removed them,” said Edwin Morris, Operation Maintenance Supervisor at Citizens. “What?” I said surprised. “They’re gone,” said Ed Malone, Director of Water Production for Citizens “They were to protect native plants,” added Sarah Holsapple, Media Relations for Citizens. I commented, “Wow, I didn’t notice they were gone!” Edwin said, “They removed them back, I think, in May.” I asked if they were removed because now the bank had been re-established. “Yes,” answered Ed. “We had two vendors, had two different proposals for how they would revegetate the banks.” “That’s right,” added Sarah. Ed continued, “So they were being evaluated, as to... one [vendor] wanted the hoops to protect [the vegetation] and the other [vendor] didn’t.” “I was surprised to see the netting added,” I commented. “I had heard the hoops were spaced a wing’s tip apart so that when geese tried to get up the banks they hit the hoops. Then the next thing, the netting went up over them. So I thought...” Edwin jumped in, “The nettings were installed the next season. They put the hoops in, the netting in the next season.” “So,” I followed up, “that project is a success? It’s over? And the banks are back?” Ed answered, “Well, we like the other...of the two, we like..” I asked, “What is the other?” Ed explained, “Well, there was one done by JF New and the other by Hoosier Aquatic. So there were two vendors. We were trying to determine which one would be most effective for revegetation.” “The vendor you preferred,” I asked, “What is their structure? What did they install?”

Crossword

A. 6152 College Avenue, Thomas Searles regarding a variance of use to provide for an office at this location. Petition # 2015-UV3-033 Hearing continued to Feb. 16 This variance is for allowing an office in the existing residence just south of the church at 62nd and College Avenue. The house was built in 1894. The proposal is to operate an engineering office from this location. There would be about five full-time employees. No customers visit and no signage would be installed on the house. The committee voted to support this variance. B. 6556 Ferguson Street, Becky Ruby-Wojtowicz for information before purchasing the property for Lilly Lane Flowers presently located at 6525 Ferguson. This was for information only. The petitioner asked the committee for recommendations to expand the house by adding a garage. The committee responded that since this is in a flood plain, it might be better to add on to the existing structure, as there is a one-time 50% improvement waiver in existence. Adding a garage would require it to meet the current flood plain building restrictions. C. 61st and Monon Trail, Michael Fox with Buckingham Construction Corporation on information for the installation of art at this location. This item was for information only. Buckingham has designed an art installation area for the northwest corner of the Monon Place Apartments property. This corner is the southwest corner of 61st and the Monon Trail. Buckingham will seek approval from Indy Parks and the City of Indianapolis for the encroachment into the right of way of 61st Street and the Monon Trail. Construction could begin in the spring. The next public meeting is scheduled for February 23 at 6pm at the Indianapolis Art Center.

Edwin said, “They actually came and did the work to reestablish the banks...put native plants in to prevent erosion. Cause we have a lot of wash out, the banks are eroding really bad in that area, so we tried those test areas first to see how the projects work.” “So,” I asked to clarify, “they didn’t do anything to keep the birds off, they just replanted?” Ed answered, “Yes, they weren’t trying to keep the birds off. They were trying to develop Slide from a previous water company presentation native species that would grow showing how muskrats burrow into the canal bank. and establish in that area.” “Another things I have heard,” I added, “is that the muskrats burrow under and come up and build a house and then as the ducks and geese go up and down over the bank it collapses the bank, causing loose dirt, and that causes a lot of the erosion” “That can happen,” replied Ed. “We do have some muskrat issues along the canal and we’ve addresses some of them, but we do occasionally have some muskrat issues where they do exactly that.”

Fresh Poem on Dude The poem below is about ‘Dude’ from The Big Lebowski. If you haven’t seen the movie, then it will make no sense. The poem was written on a day when I go out to lunch with Alan and give him some new columns for the Broad Ripple Gazette. So, this latest bit of insanity is about as fresh as my column gets. Incidentally, I would like to dedicate this poem to all of the people out there who have seen The Big Lebowski at least 50 times.

Dude’s Attachment and Walter’s Advice It was Dude’s attachment to his rug that proved his dismay.

Happy Saint Valentine’s Day season, lovelies! I’m full of love and good cheer for our wonderful neighborhood, and you, dear readers. Let’s show some love for the talented musicians and hardworking venue owners and staff for keeping us entertained. You’re the best – really!

Indiana Trivia Night Monday, February 8 Sun King Brewery 135 N. College Avenue - 21+, 5:30, free

My love of Indianapolis and Indiana are no secret and I’m excited for all of the bicentennial events popping up this year. Indiana Trivia Night will be held on the second Monday of every through June. The trivia night is co-sponsored by Sun King and Indiana Humanities. You can play solo or with a team. Fourth grade textbooks are prohibited!

That and he listened too much to Walter.

indianahumanities.org

Dude said. “The rug really tied the room together.”

Sixth Annual INdy Winter Blues Fest Friday, February 12 Birdy’s Live 3121 E. 71st Street - 21+, $15, doors open at 7 PM

And Walter’s energy led to the disarray

This is the sixth year for the Winter Blues Fest and the lineup is grand! 8:00 Craig Brenner: excellent boogie woogie piano man. 9:00 Andra Faye & Scott Ballantine: you can’t miss with these two wonderful folks with too many best-of awards to list! 10:00 Mike Milligan & Steam Shovel: soulful blues. 11:00 Dwight Edwards Band: longtime Indianapolis blues man – the stories he could tell!

(As an anti-thetical example from above, it was totally Dude’s fault for getting kicked out of the cab. That was his business, Dude – Even if you hated The Eagles).

Slaughterhouse 5 Day will honor Kurt Vonnegut’s novel by the same name. The evening will feature readings from the novel, live art making, music from the Indianapolis-based band Kilgore Trout, and Vonnegut-related improv comedy from Chicago’s Under the Gun Theater. Organized by Evoke Arts and Media, this is the second year for the event. This year will mark the 71st anniversary of the massive and complete firebombing of Nazi-held Dresden, Germany by Allied forces during the waning months of World War II. Indianapolis native and now legendary author Kurt Vonnegut was a prisoner of war in Dresden during the bombing, and his experiences on that day are the basis of his most famous book, Slaughterhouse 5. Slaughterhouse 5 was published in 1969 and has been ranked as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. The novel, zany, humorous, and tragic, often at the same time, touches on many themes and has been called the greatest book ever written about post-traumatic stress syndrome. Vonnegut died in 2007.

Auditions for the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir - Sat, Feb 20

The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir will hold auditions on Saturday, February 20 for singers interested in singing with the venerated arts institution. Auditions for adult singers who have experience in choral singing will be held for all voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and will be scheduled through the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir audition coordinator. Persons interested in scheduling an audition for the 79-year old choral ensemble must do so no later than Wednesday, February 10, 2016. “The Symphonic Choir is comprised of nearly 200 singers who represent some of the most talented, dedicated musicians in our community,” states Artistic Director Eric Stark. “These singers are all-volunteer, but participate in a competitive audition process to be a part of this chorus.” Auditions consist of singing one prepared piece of music selected at the discretion of the auditionee, plus singing one prepared excerpt from Handel’s Messiah as noted on the Symphonic Choir’s website, and sight reading. “Because the Symphonic Choir rehearses at a brisk pace to prepare for the many performances in a typical season, our singers need to be quite comfortable with sight reading,” says Stark. The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir will make its return to New York City’s Carnegie Hall in October 2016 for the first time since 1978. Persons interested in joining the Symphonic Choir to perform in spring 2016 concerts as well as the Carnegie Hall concert are encouraged to audition in February. Singers should be 18+ with prior experience singing in a choir. There are no financial dues to be a part of the Choir. For more information and to sign-up for an audition time, visit: http://indychoir.org/about/ auditions/

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Residents want new bus line rerouted off College IndyGo’s proposed Red Line bus rapid transit line has encountered some community opposition. The route which is proposed to run on College Avenue on its way north from downtown and then eventually north to Carmel is the subject of a petition drive. Critics charge it will change the traffic flows and pattern—and cause congestion. Williams Creek residents are concerned that no left hand turns will be allowed, making it hard to access their neighborhood. They also worry that access to the bus stops will be difficult since there are no sidewalks on College Avenue north of Broad Ripple (between 75th Street and 86th Street), only a drainage ditch. Williams Creek held a town hall recently on the route and is circulating a petition to get the route off College Avenue. The Nora Community Association also is against the proposed route and recently held a meeting to discuss the issue. They favor a route on Westfield Boulevard instead which would run by the Nora Y, the high school, and the shopping center instead. IndyGo is waiting for Federal funding to begin with Phase 1 of the Red Line. For more information on the Red Line, visit www.indygo.net.

Winter Farmers Market a Hit Have you been to the Farmers Market winter edition at the Bent Rail Brewery? I hadn’t so decided to check it out. They feature 24+ vendors plus a full menu from Bent Rail. This includes a large seating area where you can sit down and enjoy your treats. Previously, folks had to travel downtown to the winter farmer’s market at City Market. Now north-siders have this great new option. Attendance runs about 300 folks although they have topped 1,000. It is run by volunteers. Yes, you can even buy fresh produce like Yukon Gold potatoes. New vendors have included Amelia’s Bread which features artisian breads as well as Mallow Run Winery. Plus they have a band each week. Parking is limited so considering walking photo by Bill Malcolm down (or biking down) the Monon Trail to get there (weather permitting). The skinny: The Winter Farmers Market is held Saturdays 9am to 12pm (noon) thru April 30 at the Bent Rail Brewery, 5301 Winthrop Avenue. For more information, visit broadripplewintermarket.org. Holliday Park Trail Run set for March 19 The annual Trail Run at Holliday Park will be on March 19 this year. Register at www.tuxedobros.com or get more information on the Holliday Park website on Facebook or at the Indy Parks website at www.indy.gov/parks. Don’t be afraid of the Dark Great news for those of you who lust for that tooth purpling, robust, style of red wine. After a very successful limited release, the folks who produce the Apothic line of blended wines have permanently added APOTHIC DARK to their regular lineup. I’m already a big fan of the Apothic Red and Apothic White blends. If this wine had a coffee doppelganger, it would be a cup of Hubbard & Cravens dark roast, as this bold bottle offers up its own enticing note of smoky mocha along with a rich ripe satisfying finish. Or as a dessert, it could be a thick slice of Brotgarten’s Mocha Cream Torte Rio, a layered sponge cake with cherries and a mocha cream filling on a cookie crust. (Check it out at their Sunday Kaffeeklatsch events www.perkupindy.com ) Even better news, I’ve seen it as low as $10 a bottle at several grocery stores. The Unified Wine & Grape Symposium took place last week in California. One of the highlights is the annual, “State of the Industry” session, were experts give updates on trends when it comes to wine sales, and consumer behavior. Some fun facts to share next time you enjoy a glass of the grape. • • • • • • • •

383 million cases of wine were sold in the U.S. in 2015, up 2% California wines accounted for 60%, imports 31%, and other states 9% Higher priced wines are driving the growth: volume up 2%, value up 6% “Everyday wines” are shrinking, losing sales to other beverages There are 15,000 imported wine brands TTB approved 137,500 different labels in 2015 (lots of clutter) Direct to consumer shipments (now allowed in 43 states) increased 8.5% Direct sales are the lifeblood for small wineries

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the middle section of the top row which contains 3-4-5-8-9. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 5. The 7 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the space above the 3. The only place left is above the 8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple by Laura Minor Guest Columnist

A Friend

Is Your Health Journey > The Destination? I’ll start off by saying writing an article about fitness would have been laughable for me three years ago, and not that my writing skills have improved, but my fitness has. My journey to get there wasn’t easy, and there were many pitfalls along the way. So, if you choose to jump into a more fit life I commend that! And please learn from my mistakes. Also I don’t write at all, so please bear with me. I’ve always been an averagely fit guy who only exercised when a ball or keeping score was involved. I come from a generally unfit family, albeit very loving and nothing I would trade. But living healthier was only discussed as a result of a doctor’s advice and never really taken seriously or maybe change seemed impossible. Both my parents passed away of sudden heart attacks years before they reached their sixtieth birthdays. So I was thirty five and decided I wanted to take it seriously. Not just to live longer, but mostly to live happier. It started with a diet—cut out the large coke or two daily, chill out on the carbs, the sweets, watch my portions and the nightly beer(s) and so on. Well it worked and within months 25 pounds had dropped off and I was close to my high school weight. I was feeling proud and liking the new/old me. I think I might have even seen an ab or two…when sucking in! Fast forward six months later and the not so perfect habits were creeping back and so was the weight. There’s just no way I would be able to deprive myself of all those enjoyable things for the rest of my life. Maybe I could manage it with what I had learned… nope that was wishful thinking. I soon realized that dieting had helped me understand nutrition in a way I never had before, but was not sustainable for the long haul. So with that information I decided to take a small step towards more exercise, but what do? I don’t like running. Yet oddly enough I thought to myself “I know, I’ll run a marathon”. Great idea, huh?! You see, I had the benefit, or maybe a drawback, of being a spectator at many of my wife and sister-in-law’s marathon races and witnessed the training involved. They “did” Indy, Chicago, New York, D.C., and Boston marathons, most of which many times, I was usually there to take pictures and cheer them on. As time went on naturally it started to look easier…I now know I was blinded by thousands of really good runners making it look easy! And so the training began. It was early summer and I chose a small marathon (like 60 people running small) in Michigan the fall of that same year, another stupid choice. I threw myself into training with no base miles on my body. Locking in 15-18 mile runs thinking all along “well they do it why can’t I?” attitude. Regardless I kept up the training and during my first marathon my body started to react: my knees, my shins, my ankles, my feet-- what the heck? Despite all the advice against, I still went through with it. I even finished the marathon with a very satisfying finish time and ran every step, but it was a battle of mind and body with horrific pain. I would not recommend any of you to attempt this, or anything in its form, but please read along. So guess what, I stopped running to let my body recover and before I knew it 7 or 8 months had passed. And yes I was nearing the place where all this began. I decided to sign up for a marathon again; who is this person? I again had no base of running to start from and soon it was time for long training runs. I chose to join a running group with like-minded (crazy) people and to get advice; better yet comradery. But probably it may have been a little too late. I definitely trained hard and still my confidence was low giving how my body was feeling days before. I finished again, but this time my legs seem to shut down about the 18 mile mark and I ended up having to run/walk to complete the grueling 26.2 miles. At times I was doing the math in my head to see if it would be closer to get to my house or the finish line. My family was there to cheer me on as I rounded the last turn and they could see the struggle on my face as I crossed the line. There’s no doubt that completing a marathon is an amazing feat that deserves celebration and joy, but it’s difficult when your pre-race goals are not met. I struggled to get out for my first early morning run a few days later, yet I made it out. This was a huge step in my transformation as I was NOT out there on a training run, I was out there to exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Thank you to my running buddy for helping me get through those dark early mornings. In the coming weeks I kept a running schedule that

I learned that all the aches and pains that were so frustrating are to be expected when you don’t take the time needed to strengthen and prepare the muscles involved. It is so funny to think something you (I) hated before could be something you love. I always felt like I needed an end goal of a race to continue running, I was so wrong! It actually got easier without the goal and slowly transitioned from looking at my running watch to looking and appreciating the surroundings, still working on that one though. Months later my wife introduced me to running trails in Indy and circuit classes at her studio and exercise has never been more fulfilling. Therefore, the personal point of this article is this: anything is possible….however, best to try and appreciate the process of the journey in order to both physically and mentally enjoy its benefits. I can finally see a future in fitness instead of the “end” I always thought I needed to be successful. Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter ABC I love to read and I love to buy books, still. No matter what I am in search for, a book cover with A,B,C on the cover always stops me. Today many famous illustrators have tackled this genre, the picture/word that begins with the alphabetical letter. Many are fantastic works of art and imagination. Some are simple, some complex, some pop-ups, some oversized, and some regional. This love of the ABCs inspired my list to see if I could find the words of Broad Ripple Village to illustrate our alphabet. This is attempt #1. Aa – Artifacts Bb – Broad Ripple Village Cc – Canal Dd – Deering Cleaners Ee – Elgin Water Care Ff – Flanner & Buchanan Gg – Good Earth Natural Food Store Hh – Hotel Broad Ripple Ii – Indianapolis Art Center Jj – Johnny’s Market Kk- Kimmel Shoe Repair Ll – La Piedad Mm – Monon Trail

Nn – Nicole-Taylor Pasta Oo – Ossip Optometry Pp – Paw Patch Qq - Qdoba Rr – Red Key Tavern Ss – Starbucks Tt – Taste Cafe Uu – Union Jack Pub Vv –Vogue Ww – Weaver’s Lawn & Garden Xx – X-factor (We have it!) Yy – Yats Zz – Zashi Productions

So if you practice this set of ABCs with your little ones, you may be helping them in all sorts of ways. Reading the ABCs helps develop conversation skills, helps to understand phonics, makes connections between letters, builds vocabulary, sequencing, and reading. Most of all, the ABCs are the building blocks of our English language. You will be in good company if you recite the Broad Ripple Alphabet. The child’s ABC book is considered one of the oldest genres of American literature. This is how children not only learned to read but learned history, and religious and natural world content. If you want, you can also build an ABC list of your neighborhood, your backyard, your city, and another of Broad Ripple. It is a fun activity for adults and children alike. Even more challenging is a task of illustrating your choices. It can be an amazing gift to give a small child just beginning to learn our language. In addition since I marked this #1, I may do a #2. I am sure the fantastic business of Broad Ripple love to see their names in print. PS I could use a few x, y, and zs. BRVA Night at Coliseum - Indy Fuel Game On January 22 the Indiana Fuel beat the Quad City Mallards by a 2-1 count at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. After the game, the Broad Ripple Village Association held a fund raising event on the ice. Attendees purchased rubber ducks before the game, then after the game hurled them over the Plexiglas walls onto the ice. I would guess about a thousand ducks were in play. Several tossed ducks were chosen and the “owners” won prizes from Broad Ripple Village merchants.
