Below the deck is the College Avenue canal bridge (College running left and right in this photo). Broad Ripple Avenue runs diagonally to the upper right in this photo. In the left center, you can see the old Shell station and apartments that were recently razed to make way for the Fresh Thyme Market and Coil Apartments. In the lower right corner, are Roselyn Bakery and Bob’s Marathon that were razed for the mixed-use parking structure.

Part Eleven For those readers just discovering this series on the canal now in its 10th part, I will explain why the canal is important and why the Gazette is doing this series. The dam that created the Central Canal was built on the White River in 1836 and the Town of Broad Ripple grew up around it. It is why we are here today. For years the canal has supplied the City of Indianapolis with 60% of its fresh water which is processed for our clean water supply.
A little background for this segment... In 1958 a concrete parking deck was constructed over the canal. It completely obscured the canal from the firehouse to about halfway to the College Avenue bridge. I remember a parking lot arm that raised either to let cars in or out, but I don’t remember which. I also don’t know if they charged to park there (I wasn’t born until 1960!) In 1999 it was torn down and the canal was restored to its original glory. Over the years several have sent in photos. If any readers have photos of the parking deck, please let me know. It is important to preserve as much Broad Ripple history as possible. “Were you around for the parking deck that was over the canal?” I asked Sarah Holsapple, Media Relations for Citizens. “No,” she answered, “what year was that? No, I wasn’t here.” “It came down in 1999,” I replied. “This is them taking the canal deck down,” as I pointed at a picture I brought. “The deck is in here too,” said Ed Malone, Director of Water Production for Citizens, pointing at another picture I brought. “Do you remember the parking deck?” I asked Ed. “Yes, I remember the parking deck,” he answered. I showed several pictures. “This is them taking it down in 99. I have an aerial picture of it too, you can see the cars on the canal here. Here is one of them building it.” Ed said, “Actually we liked the parking deck being there. The reason being is we didn’t get the weed growth under the parking deck.” “No sunlight!” added Edwin Morris, Operations and Maintenance Supervisor for Citizens. “It was pretty long,” I explained while pointing to the aerial photo, “ it went from here (Guilford) all the way down to here (half way to College) along the canal.” Sarah exclaimed, “ Wow! Interesting. So, there was a lot more parking in Broad Ripple!”

Taking down the canal deck in 1999. This is looking to the north east. The pickup truck in the right center is next to the old Future Shock. To the right of that is the fire station.
Ed answered, “Oh yeah, there was a lot more parking there.” “Do you know who took the deck down?” I asked. “Who was responsible? Was it the city…or DPW? Do you remember anything about that?” Ed answered, “I don’t remember how that decision was made. I know we were involved in the decision, but I was not party to that.” Sarah added, “And when you say we, that is way before Citizens owned the water utility starting in 2011.” “That’s correct,” said Ed. “At the time, we heard it was too expensive to fix because it was crumbling,” I added. Ed said, “It was [crumbling]. It wasn’t a utility structure (meaning belonging to a public utility), it was a city parking structure.” I remember the concrete deck was in such bad shape that you could see the canal through large holes. I think sections were roped off for safety. I remember a parking study being performed showing that there was a surplus of available parking spots in the Village and that the removal of the parking deck would not be injurious to local businesses. I believe that study counted the spots available in every parking lot and along every street in Broad Ripple. They compared that to the estimated number of visitors. Parking in Broad Ripple has long been a topic of conversation!

A Poem In A Poem Below is a poem I wrote on December 13, 2015. This poem is a first for me because it features a poem inside a poem. The poem and the poem inside of a poem pay tribute to the cross-over dribble of Tim Hardaway. He perfected the move while a college basketball player at UTEP. His 2-step move featured a hitch which would leave the defender a pile of goo upon the basketball court.

The intimate Indy Folks series is housed in the Unitarian Universalist Church. The concerts are in an intimate listening room venue featuring superb acoustics, art on the walls, and candles on the tables – a true folk series vibe. Light refreshments, including wine and beer, are available prior to the concert and during intermission. The Underhills weave together guitars, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and bass to create an original sound that is evocative of old-time folk and bluegrass, while experimenting with new ideas and grooves not typically heard on these instruments. Inspired by the wooded hills of southern Indiana, this six-piece acoustic band combines rich harmonies and virtuosic instrumental ability to carve out their own niche in bluegrass music. My love of Chad Mills’ music is no secret. I wandered into Birdy’s one evening and was lucky enough to hear him play – and it happened to be the album release show for 2 Places at Once. Eight years later he is launching his ninth studio album. To celebrate this milestone, he is hosting an album release party at Theatre on Square. The Indiana Music and Entertainment Museum (IMEM) has a new gallery and headquarters at Wheeler Arts in Fountain Square. This is the first exhibit of this year for IMEM and the first for the new gallery space. Featured are rare artifacts, posters and collectibles from Indiana music, film and broadcasting. IMEM also accepts donations of historical music, film, and broadcasting artifacts, along with monetary donations which will enable expanded exhibits and other programs and donations are tax deductible. I know I’ve accumulated stacks of music flyers and such over the years – now I have a reason to go through it all.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Fundraiser for the Hoosier Environmental Council
Fundraiser from Water Warrior Yoga to be held at The Yoga Studio’s Annex on Sunday, February 21st from 1:00-2:15, taught by Erin Baker. Indianapolis Children’s Choir founder recognized
The Indiana Music Education Association (IMEA) presented the 2016 Outstanding Hoosier Musician Award to Henry Leck, the founder and artistic director of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir (ICC), in January. The IMEA honored individuals in three categories including Outstanding Hoosier Musician, Outstanding Administrator and Outstanding Indiana Music Educator at their annual IMEA Professional Development Conference last week in Fort Wayne. Leck, an internationally recognized choral director, is professor emeritus and recently retired director of choral activities at Butler University aside from his duties with ICC. Under his direction, ICC has grown from two small choirs to one of the largest choral organizations of its kind, with nearly 20 choirs and many music classes serving more than 5,000 young people from 18 months to 18 years of age each year. Approximately 2,500 children are enrolled in the ICC’s weekly rehearsals and classes, and the other 2,500 receive programming or resources from its Innovations initiative, which directly supports music in schools. ICC singers have traveled to and performed on six continents and in some of the world’s most recognizable venues and events, including Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, the Super Bowl, the NCAA Women’s Final Four, the FINA World Swimming Championships and mass at the Vatican. Leck announced his retirement in July and plans to step down from his podium after the 30th Anniversary Concert on April 30th of this year. Josh Pedde, the current assistant artistic director, will step into the role after working seamlessly with Leck for the past 15 years. This time, this “last shot” at saving films that are rapidly disintegrating will, if you help reach the Kickstarter goal, preserve the Milan films that have been stored at Milan High School since its amazing victory over the much-larger Muncie Central in the 1954 boys’ state basketball championship, immortalized in the film, Hoosiers. In real life, Bobby Plump threw a “last shot” with about a second to play. The ball went into the basket and Milan won by two points. The character Jimmy Chitwood, playing for tiny Hickory High School in the film, also makes that last shot. Both the 1954 game and the Hoosiers game were filmed at Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse. You can go right now to the Kickstarter site and make a pledge of at least $50 for admission to the party. Bring proof of that pledge (you’ll receive an acknowledgement from Kickstarter) to Plump’s. Students to get free FAFSA filing help at College Goal Sunday
Financial aid professionals will be volunteering at 42 sites in Indiana to help college-bound students and their families open the door to financial aid during College Goal Sunday. The event is set for 2 p.m. (local time), February 21, 2016. The free program assists Indiana students in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and student loans at most colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools nationwide. The FAFSA MUST be filed by March 10 to be eligible for Indiana financial aid. College Goal Sunday is so important since completing this required form correctly and by the deadline is sometimes perceived to be complicated and time consuming. In less than one afternoon at a College Goal Sunday event, students and their families can get free help and file the form online. Students should attend College Goal Sunday with their parent(s) or guardian(s), and parents’ should bring completed 2015 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 Forms and other 2015 income and benefits information. Students who worked last year should bring their income information as well. Students 24 years of age or older may attend alone and bring their own completed 2015 IRS 1040 tax return, W-2 Form or other 2015 income and benefits information. Students and parents are encouraged to apply for their U.S. Department of Education FSA IDs at fsaid.ed.gov before coming to the event. Volunteers will walk through the online form line-by-line and answer families’ individual questions as needed. All sites offer FAFSA online capabilities and many have Spanish interpreters. A complete list of sites is available at CollegeGoalSunday.org. Students may also win one of ten $1000 scholarships. Students who attend any of the College Goal Sunday sites and submit a completed evaluation form will automatically be entered in a drawing for a $1000 scholarship. The winners will be notified in March, and prizes will be sent directly to the higher education institution selected by the winning students. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

New group formed to get bus line off College Avenue As reported in my column last edition, neighborhood groups have raised concerns about IndyGo’s plan to run the new Red Line Bus Rapid Transit line along College Avenue. A recently formed group called College Avenue Indy has placed a billboard at 54th and College. “Stop the Red Line” it proclaims, citing congestion, wasted tax dollars and over-development. They note the City will hold a hearing on the matter on February 17. They do not list who is funding them nor the names of any individual on their website nor how to contact them. Bus rapid transit would be a new highfrequency, limited-stop service that is being used in other cities along high usage routes. The Red Line is planned to run from the University of Indianapolis, north to downtown, up to Broad Ripple, and then, eventually, on to Carmel. Requests for Federal funding for the line is pending. In a city plagued by a bare bones transit system, it’s disappointing to see opposition to the one bright spot on the horizon. While waiting for the Red Line, be sure and take the #17 and #18 from Broad Ripple to downtown. You’ll save on parking and be able to read while you ride. Fare just $1.75 and buses run every 30 minutes during the week.

Skunk cabbage up at Holliday Park Norma Wallman and I are scouting out for skunk cabbage, the first plant to bloom in spring, which is starting to bloom in Holliday Park. The plant generates it own heat (to melt snow) and has large green flowers (which smell like a skunk to some). Also in bloom is the witch hazel tree. So, spring is around the corner and in just a month hepatica hill will be full of hepaticas. Can the trout lilies be far behind. Don’t miss a winter hike at the Park—an area gem. The last word on civil rights for LGBT The state legislature and Governor have spent the 3rd legislative session debating LGBT issues. No matter which side you are on, it’s amazing that again this session it was the number one topic. Worse, they kicked the can to 2017 – despite the fact that this is an election year and you would think they would like to get it off the table. Worse, a survey by Visit Indy showed that Indy was losing convention business due to the RFRA fall out. If Utah can pass a bill (as they did 2 years ago with support from the Mormon Church), certainly Indiana should be able to figure it out. Indeed, the Indiana Chamber and large businesses throughout the state strongly supported civil rights protections. Indiana should not continue with a self-imposed black eye. RFRA was bad last year but this year’s non-actions ripped the bandage off the wound. Indiana can do better. WEATHER DEFYING WINE and FOOD It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day in Broad Ripple without a bit of snow and the Perk Up/Brotgarten Valentine’s Day Dinner. 24 lucky guests braved the blustery weather to enjoy an enchanted evening of food, wine, music (Kudos to NCHS Jazz Trio “Groove In”) and another unique, hand-crafted Valentine from Alice’s husband Innacio. Crush & Brew provided the wine selections that included a crisp dry German Riesling, an earthy Cabernet Sauvignon, and the hands down favorite, a bold rich Malbec from Argentina that was perfectly paired with Alice’s hearty beef ragout. She and Jeanette create a variety of sweet and savory breads, pastries, muffins and goodies every day. Plus breakfast and lunch sandwiches. But this yearly meal showcases their limitless culinary capabilities. The theme of the meal reflected an AsianGerman Island getaway with flavors and colors that not only excited diner’s taste buds, but elicited a gleeful giggle from the creative and thoughtful presentation of each plate. Guests were welcomed with a nonalcoholic punch, a trio of juices touched with caramel and served over cinnamon crushed ice. Shrimp ceviche with avocado and mango followed, then a luxurious and aromatically exotic carrot orange bisque. A refreshing daikon-Fuji apple salad with yuzu dressing cleansed the palate, before the main course arrived: a rich and satisfying beef ragout accompanied by a heart shaped polenta cake and soy glazed baby bella mushrooms. Baskets of freshly baked Brotgarten baguettes were used to sop up the hearty tomato based sauce leaving 24 members of the “clean plate club”. Rounding out the evening was dessert, a cheery plate with a swath of sweet curry mousse surrounding milk chocolate cups filled with caramelized bananas and coconut. Perk Up’s house roasted coffees and cups of espresso were served as guests readied for the truly “priceless” portion of the evening, a serenade from Circle City Sound and Innacio’s incredible hand cut, three dimensional Valentines housed in a hand made paper boxes. The ladies are taking reservations now for next year’s dinner. This ad for Sutho Suds appeared in 1946. The “hidden” location of this old business was recently shown as the signs were removed one by one from the now defunct Double 8 Grocery headquarters, south east of Broad Ripple, at 46th and the Fair Train tracks near Keystone. The building (top photo) has been for sale and is being cleaned up. First, the Double 8 sign came down revealing the Seven-Eleven Grocery office and warehouse sign (middle photo). Next, that sign came down revealing the sign engraved into the limestone facade for Sutho-Suds (lower photo). I did some research and found that it was a company that made synthetic soap - “A post-war miracle - Perfected during the war for vital war uses”.

H2O when it’s Cold! This article is probably coming to you a bit late as winter is likely coming to a close in the next month or so (which my guess is many of you are thankful for). However, the topic idea came to me due to our recent family ski trip to Copper Mountain in Colorado. With the exception of this year, the past two years I fell ill for about 24 hours due to what I believe to be dehydration. If you are a regular reader, you may recall an article last spring addressing my horrible experience with a kidney stone for the same reason during my training for Boston Marathon. So, AGAIN this one is learning from my mistakes. After that incident I have drastically changed my ways of drinking too little water for my activity level. When most of us think of the word dehydration we typically associate it with heat and summer. But in actuality, the winter moisture can be drained from the body more easily and leave you dehydrated. Here are several facts that I learned about winter dehydration which will hopefully persuade you to drink up when it’s chilly!! • In cold weather more moisture is lost through respiratory evaporation. Humans lose 1 pint of water a day through breathing alone, and this increases in winter. • The hormone that triggers our sense of thirst reacts differently when we are exposed to cold weather. So in general, people don’t drink as much as they should in the winter. • In order to feel thirsty, your body has a mechanism that is often triggered by sweating, leading to your body demanding more fluid by feeling thirsty. However in cold weather our body reacts differently and you don’t feel as thirsty, leading most to drink less water. • When wrapped up in lots of layers it is normally more difficult to tell how much you’re sweating and how dehydrated you are becoming. • In a dry or high-altitude setting, your sweat will turn right into vapor instead of forming on the skin. For instance, if you have been skiing and see someone steaming, then their sweat has already turned to water vapor. • In cold weather, your body has to work harder to humidify the air you breathe and to warm it up, meaning that you need to drink more water and eat more if you are outdoors. • In my case to boot, cold weather makes me crave COFFEE which has caffeine… which is a diuretic leading to additional fluid loss. • Lastly, if you are engaging in physical activity such as skiing, running, snowshoeing, this exponentially raises the need to drink more water! I recently purchased a “camelback” from a local running store which is essentially a backpack with a water bladder and a hydration hose. It is awesome! So, don’t lay off the aqua in the chilly temps, keep your H2O intake the same if not more than when it’s toasty! Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. The Broad Ripple Village Association recently held a meeting to plan the Village’s activities for the upcoming Indianapolis Bicentennial celebration in August at Broad Ripple Park.
by Brandt Carter What I Learned! Every once in a while someone will ask, “What have you learned?” Whether from a class, a life-lesson, a fight, a book, “what you have learned” is significant. Because of my store and my hobby of birdfeeding, I mused about what I have learned from birds. So here goes! • • • • • • •

“The early bird gets the worm” I love being first so I can get my choice! I observed how the birds eat at my feeder and wish I could learn the lesson they display so perfectly: eat small meals and eat only when you are hungry. Eat what is good for you is another message. You won’t see them eating candy, drinking pop or coffee or having cocktails. No, they love seeds, berries, suet, and peanuts. Sing your heart out is a great lesson. When you are awake, make some noise, don’t be silent, engage, and sing or speak beautiful words like the birds music. They only scold when there is an enemy in their territory. Go for the male with the best nest. This is a lesson I observed later in life, but I never fail to share this lesson with young women. A male wren will carefully build multiple nests, and the female will choose the perfect one. Go south for the winter. Migration is not shared by all birds, but only by the ones who nest in the south or need the warmth for survival. I wish I could go to the sunny south more often. Feed and take care of your young. Dad may help every so often, but the mom is usually the major caregiver. They don’t depend on handouts or substitutes (cat birds don’t practice this!). They are ferocious when it comes to taking care of their eggs and young. Nature has reliable laws…follow them. Fly fast when in danger. Birds rarely stay for the fight. Keep clean. Watch a bird dust up in the drive way or take a dunk in a birdbath. This helps their feathers stay in condition. Push your kids out of the nest when it is time. You have never seen a teenage or adult bird living with their parents. And the birds do push, they don’t ask! Be proud of who you are. You have never seen a cardinal trying to be a hawk or an owl.
