They were all there to support the project to restore the old Milan basketball films. The Kickstarter fund raising project at http://kck.st/1OTiooA was active at press date but may be completed by the time you read this. The project is to save the original game films of the famous 1954 State Championship basketball game where Milan beat the big town teams, which was the basis for the 1986 film Hoosiers.

Riverwood Neighborhood Association By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com There have been many changes recently in the Ravenswood area along the White River (Ravenswood is around BB27 on the page 17 map). A new Neighborhood Association has been formed and would like to let their community know what is planned for the future. The Riverwood Neighborhood Association is here to serve our community. The former coordinator of the Ravenswood/White River Neighborhood Association, Suze Stamm, resigned after serving her community for over fifteen years. During her tenure, many important improvements happened. The old White River School was finally torn down and in its place is Riverwood Park with two ball fields, an all-weather basketball court, a covered picnic area, a large playground for the kids and a water spray park. Many trees, safety rails, Ravenswood Overlook Park and other improvements came about during those years and because of negotiations with Citizen’s Energy Group, new sewers for sewage and drainage will come this spring at a cost far less than was originally proposed. In the weeks following Stamm’s announcement, it was proposed that elections be held to replace her and to bring new members to the board. The original bylaws did not have a method for elections, so a committee was formed to provide direction on how an election should proceed. Fifteen citizens were approved by a vote of the community to create an updated set of by-laws. The committee met three times over the course of four weeks to write by-laws that would follow the mandate that every decision would be approved by the association having final say in all matters. The by-laws were presented at the next meeting and were adopted by a unanimous vote. That was the birth of the new association. To mark a new beginning, the name chosen came from the gem of the neighborhood, which is Riverwood Park. “It was determined that is was best to start everything fresh,” Hal Ames, the newly elected president explained. “We know we need to be one community, working together for the benefits of all neighbors. When we began the process of writing updated by-laws we established the foundation of what we wanted our association to be by creating our motto, Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” The boundary lines of the association are from the south side 71st Street north to the White River and Keystone Avenue west to White River, which encompasses what used to be the town of Ravenswood. “Anyone who lives here, works here or owns property here are welcome to join us in improving the lifestyle of our friends and neighbors,” Ames stated. The meetings are scheduled quarterly on the second Monday of the month or as often as they are needed to inform the community of projects and events that are coming. “We’re looking for committee chairs for some of the projects that we have proposed, as well as a grant writer to apply for any government grants that might be available. We’re also looking to form connections with other neighborhood associations,” he said. Rev. Ames has lived in the Ravenswood neighborhood for just over four years. “When I first moved here, I didn’t know anything about the community. My son lives five minutes from our house and we wanted to be close to our grandchildren.

alan@broadripplegazette.com There were three items on the agenda for the February 23rd public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association Land Use and Development Committee at the Indianapolis Art Center. There were about 20 in attendance. A.1021 Broad Ripple Avenue, Michael Rabinowitch representing Thr3e Wise Men regarding the addition of selling liquor as well as beer and wine. This proposal was by Scotty Wise to begin to fully use the existing 3-way (beer, wine, alcohol) license that Thr3e Wise Men owns. Currently, only beer and wine are served. The original agreement with the BRVA was to use the 3-way license as a 2-way. According to Scotty, business is down at restaurants, so there is a desire to add high-end bourbons and other drinks to the menu to bring in more people. He said that the current hours will remain the same, the restaurant will not stay open (as the license allows) until 3am. There was no vote taken or needed, but there was no opposition to the proposal. B. 6311 Westfield Boulevard, Michael Rabinowitch and Todd Morris, owner of the property regarding the redevelopment for mixed uses. This is a proposal to raze the three-story office building between the White River and Brugge Brasserie and the corner of Winthrop and Westfield. This project has been presented at a previous meeting and updates to the design were explained. There was no vote tonight as the design is still in development. The latest design is for a fivestory, 75-foot-tall apartment building with parking garage and retail space. The petitioner stated that the Broad Ripple Plan asks for buildings of 40 to 100 feet tall in this area. There will be 104 units with approximately 150 residents. The garage is expected to have 107 parking spots and space for Rendering of the river side of the 6311 project. 50 to 100 bicycle parking spots. The developers will work with the City if improvements to the Monon Trail crossing at this location can be made and also on the possible project to terminate Riviera Drive into a new Riverwalk pedestrian pathway along the White River behind McDonald’s. Another more finalized presentation is expected at the March 22 meeting. C. Canal Esplanade project update and proposed railings presentation by Tom Healy and Carl Willis of Jezrock Metal Works. This item was to ask the committee if there is support to ask for a different railing system for the canal esplanade that will be installed this summer east of College. The current design is a steel and cable railing system. There were many concerns raised including safety and maintenance. A safer and lower maintenance artistic railing was proposed. The committee voted to support this proposal to go back to the City and the developers of the esplanade to request this upgrade to the railings. The next public meeting of the committee is March 22 at 6pm at the Indianapolis Art Center.

Scott Long is a long-time resident, vice president of the Association and coordinator of the new food pantry. “I was involved in rewriting all of the bylaws. We passed out a copy of the bylaws to every home in our association boundaries, then let the community vote on them before we put them in action. We’re all about giving the community a voice. I’ve lived in Riverwood for over 34 years. I provide a free community breakfast at my house on the third Saturday of each month from April until sometime in November, depending on the weather. I am a member of the Northside Baptist Church that sponsors the free breakfast. Northside Baptist Church, in cooperation with Glendale Christian Church, is starting a food pantry at 1788 Haynes Avenue on March 14. People can drop off food at the church or we can pick it up. I currently volunteer at the Northside Baptist Church food panty on Tuesdays. Sometimes, we have food left over that I can take to Glendale Christian Church. Occasionally, we get eggs and a lot of bread from Kroger, Entenmann’s and Fresh Thyme Market,” Long explained. The other members of the board of directors come from many different walks of life and bring differing ideas and skills with them, some are new and some served on the old board. It is an exciting time for all of them. Monday, March 14th is their next Association meeting because of the Citizen’s Energy Groups Septic Tank Elimination Program is beginning at that time. Their next neighborhood meeting will be Monday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Glendale Christian Church, located at 1788 Haynes Avenue, which is across the street from Riverwood Park. Their special guest will be Indiana State Representative Christina Hale, whose legislative region, House District 87, covers the Riverwood area. They also have a group at: www.nextdoor.com, which is an open social network for neighborhoods. The Riverwood Neighborhood Association has many goals they hope to accomplish as soon as possible. The 11 members of the Board of Directors are all committed to making the Ravenswood/Ralston Heights/Terrace Beach/Phinney Landing/Island Park/Riverview areas all that they can be to improve residents’ lives and most of all, their property values. They have all agreed that ‘Neighbors Helping Neighbors’ is the right way to improve their way of life.

Flood Project Could Doom Rocky Ripple Sacrificing the town of Rocky Ripple for the sake of completing a 30-year-old flood project is neither good nor responsible government. This is the message once again being sent by the town board of Rocky Ripple, a small village nestled between the Central Canal, White River and Butler University. In Mid-December Indianapolis officials announced another change to the location of the North Flood Damage Reduction Project. This time, from the westside of the canal back to the east-side known as the Westfield Blvd. Alignment. Although the change is better for a few homeowners in Rocky Ripple, as it saves their houses; from the point of view of the town as a whole, both plans wall the town into the path of flood waters, which is worse than doing nothing. The main reason hundreds of Rocky Ripple and adjoining community residents have spoken out in public meetings, sent letters and made phone calls against the canal options over the last five years is not because they are against flood protection, but because the town is being ignored and sacrificed in “a” plan for flood protection of others. For more than twenty years Rocky Ripple has requested help from the City in maintaining and restoring the earthen levee that has protected the town since it was built by the WPA in the 1930s. Now the biggest flood threat is not the river coming over the top of the levee but a break in the levee resulting in a washout. If the levee fails where the White River turns west and separates from the canal just south of 56th Street and Illinois, the river would be diverted with a terrible force into Rocky Ripple and those who were not washed away would be under water in a matter of minutes. Construction up-stream has increased the flow and speed of the river during high-water incidents, and the decision to leave Rocky Ripple out of the flood protection plan, not only threatens the small town into becoming a blighted area of more than 300 homes, it threatens lives. City officials need to work with USACE to develop a flood protection plan

Brad Riley has been promoted to Director of Strategic Accounts & Customer Programs. Riley joined IPL in 1980. U.S. Army Field Band to Perform Free Concert at Clowes Hall

Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), announces key new hires. Rafael Sanchez joins IPL as Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning. In this new role, Rafael will focus on strategic IPL business initiatives while helping to ensure IPL maintains safe, reliable and affordable electricity for its 480,000 residential and commercial customers. The internationally acclaimed United States Army Field Band of Washington, D.C., will continue its long tradition of presenting free public performances when it appears at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University on March 28 at 7:30 PM. The Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus are the oldest and largest of The U.S. Army Field Band’s performing components. These two ensembles combine to present joint concerts on their national tours. They have performed in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling hundreds of millions. The 65-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus perform regularly in some of the most famous concert halls in the world, and just as often in the humblest auditoriums in the smallest of communities. The joining of these two ensembles allows them to offer unparalleled versatility of programming, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias to Sousa marches, jazz classics, and Broadway musicals. The band and chorus also perform independently, and have recently shared the stage with such ensembles as the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. In addition to their national tours, formal concerts, chamber recitals, and educational outreach, members of the Concert Band and Soldiers’ Chorus frequently represent the Army at formal and ceremonial functions, including the Presidential Inaugural Parade, presidential funerals, the Army All-American Bowl, and diplomatic efforts overseas. More than six decades as the military’s most traveled musicians have earned them the title, “The Musical Ambassadors of the Army.” The Army Field Band’s concert in Indianapolis is sponsored by the Butler University School of Music.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Some Butler Tarkington residents want the floodwall finished after all Some Butler Tarkington residents have organized in favor of completing the flood wall in contrast to others in the neighborhood who favor an alternative plan after the city recently changed its view. A reader wrote to the Mayor: “...after exhaustive study and thoughtful consideration, we are strongly in favor of the expeditious completion of the Westfield Alignment of the Indianapolis North Flood Damage Reduction Project (the “Project”). By now, we trust you should have received the correspondence issued on behalf of the Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood Association (“BTNA”) by BTNA president, Clark Kirkman (a copy of which can be found at http:// butlertarkington.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/BTNA-Feb-2016-Letterto-Mayor-Hogsett.pdf). …. you must understand that Butler-Tarkington is a diverse neighborhood of competing interests. Despite the formal resolutions of the BTNA (who have made an honest, goodfaith effort to represent the competing interests of the neighborhood), it is imperative that you hear the voices of the residents who live in the floodplain and whose lives will be directly affected by the Project…Please understand that we are not petitioning for unattainable, ideological social change. Mis-Fit? Chances are pretty good that you own one. And if you don’t, look around and you will see them everywhere. What I am referring to are those stylish little gadgets of various different brands that call themselves “fitness trackers”. These devices, such as Fitbit, Jawbone and Garmin versions claim to record daily steps, calories burned, heart rate and even sleep patterns of its users. Many of my clients own them and boast about how many steps they have gotten that day or inversely complain that they haven’t hit their daily goal of burned calories. I actually had one myself for about 6 months until I chose to stop using it. Why? Because I discovered on my own that it was significantly inaccurate. For example, pretty much every time I went on a run it was over a mile off on my distance. Sure it didn’t know my exact stride length, but I feel that over a mile is quite a big error of margin. Now let me first start off with a few points about why trackers can be helpful in certain ways. If these devices help to prompt behavior and activity in general, particularly if it is more than without it, then it is doing one of its intended jobs. The accountability factor is definitely worth noting, as it is nudging the user to move more, and maybe eat more healthfully. So this is a good thing! However, unfortunately, and in my opinion more importantly, the fact that these “helpers” can be significantly inaccurate is not only frustrating but could be downright dangerous. Let me cite some examples to explain why: • Currently Fitbit is facing a lawsuit alleging that its heart rate monitoring technology is inaccurate. One participant in the suit had her trainer test her heart rate to be 160 bpm, while her Fitbit recorded 82 bpm. So, if one was truly relying on the Fitbit heart rate, it would be perceived as not working that hard at all, which could entice the user to push to levels above safe zones. This is scary!! • A study out of Iowa State found the calories burned were inaccurate ranging from 9.3 to a whopping 40 percent! This could lead people to think they burned a lot more calories than in reality and could give “permission” to consume more calories than they should. • Certain activities such as resistance training are hard for the device to “record” since you may be exercising quite vigorously without taking many steps. Conversely, certain movements such as typing can be recorded as steps since most of these devices are worn on the wrist. Both scenarios lend to inaccurate steps/calories burned. • If one “truly” wants to measure their heart rate, distance, and a good estimation of calories burned he/she should wear a real heart rate monitor with a GPS system. Not everyone is interested in such great detail, but I assure you that this is a much more accurate form of information (i.e. NOT a mile off). • One article I read states “Consumers generally let fitness tracker makers off the hook by setting low expectations for these devices. This likely corresponds with our willingness to stash them in a drawer after mere weeks or months of use.” Therefore the tracker makers have collected our money without much improvement of their inaccurate products. In summary, if you use a fitness tracker and have had a good experience, have seen results, and feel it motivates you to keep active/eat better/sleep more, then great. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Bringing Up a Service Dog If you have read my column over the years, you know my backyard is filled with cats and dogs. And you know that I am a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence. We are raising our 14th puppy right now. Devlin IV is an amazing 10-month-old Lab Golden cross now tipping the scales at 60 lbs. We got him when he was 8-weeks-old in June of 2015. Devlin and his sister Derby were shipped into the Indianapolis airport where we picked up our new servicedogs-to-be. The adventure of raising a puppy that is not yours is a great journey. We pour huge amounts of love into them knowing they will someday leave us for advanced training. I get to potty train Devlin, feed, train, exercise, socialize and play with him while knowing I will return him to our training center in November of 2016. At the beginning it is all about Devlin IV, Canine Companion for Independence shaping the pup to trust a puppy and puppy raiser, Brandt Carter human and sealing the human/ canine bond, plus house manners. At 12 weeks we class at First Friend K9. The next months consist of Puppy and Novice classes in addition to lots of exposure to new and different environments and experiences. By 6 months the puppy is ready to go to work, church, movies, and dinner with their puppy raiser so they can begin the myriad of situations that a trained service dog will encounter. The news flash that I want to share is….I am honored to have my name given to a puppy. There is now a “Brandt” puppy that will begin his journey to become a service dog. Like so much karma, the world is really a very small, connected network. The breeder/caretaker, Sharon Mosbaugh, lives near Santa Rosa, CA. She and her husband moved from Carmel, IN where she had raised a puppy for Canine Companions for Independence. Since they moved near the national headquarters, she qualified to care for breeder pups that are selected from service dogs in training. The designated male or female dog is Brandt, Canine Companion for Independence puppy transported from their training center and takes up residence with a breeder/caretaker who oversees date weekend, pregnancy, whelping and the first 8 weeks of puppy life. Sharon and her husband have been the doulas for 10 litters! The service dog program is showered with all kinds of miracles…wonderful volunteers, quality, well-trained dogs, and grateful recipients who have their lives changed. Canine Companions gives qualified candidates their dog FREE and all a person with a disability needs to do is apply and then attend a two-week training class at the nearest training center (there are 6 nationwide). The team (person and dog) also receives continual support during the time of service. Adults and older children with disabilities such as deafness, autism, mobility issues, CP, MS, MD, downs syndrome, paralysis, give you an idea of who might benefit from this amazing partnership. They even place dogs for courtroom and facility therapy.
