The art deco entrance of the White River Treatment Plant where the canal water is processed for the City of Indianapolis.

Everything you always wanted to know about the canal... By Alan Hague

Part Fourteen

By Mario Morone

For those readers just discovering this series on the canal now in its 14th part, I will explain why the canal is important and why the Gazette is doing this series. The dam that created the Central Canal was built on the White River in 1836 and the Town of Broad Ripple grew up around it. It is why we are here today. For years the canal has supplied the City of Indianapolis with 60% of its fresh water which is processed for our clean water supply.

That wraps up all of the questions about the canal itself. Next we talked about how that canal water is processed to supply Indianapolis with fresh water. Mario Morone, writer for the Broad Ripple Gazette, asked, “In the times you’ve spent with the water company has technology changed dramatically in the way you process water, manage it, and operations in general?” Ed Malone, Director of Water Production for Citizens, replied, “No, technology has not...but yes, regulations have changed dramatically in my career here. The regulatory requirements for the water treatment process have significantly changed. I’ve been here for over 30 years.” I followed up, “Is that due to the introduction of new chemicals that are getting dumped [into the river, and get into the canal]?” Ed answered, “Well, yes and no. Technology has allowed us to be able to differentiate or see what’s in the water to a much more detailed level. And as we have the ability to monitor or analyze those things then we are also able to determine what the effects are of those things. Our treatment processes have been asked to respond accordingly. So, yes. There’s been significant change, particularly related to turbidity, how clear the water is that we produce. And then related to chlorine, not only just to the chlorine residual (the amount left in the drinking water), but the effects that chlorine can have on the water. Chlorine is a two-sided sword. It is very beneficial in that it can remove things - meaning viruses, inactivation of viruses, what not. But also it can form disinfection byproducts which can cause health concerns, so there’s a Original Indianapolis Water Company tile work in the fine line. And then UV (ultravestibule of the plant. violet treatment) came in because of the issues that happened in Milwaukee and other areas of the nation where cryto and giardia were not being removed effectively in some treatment operations. So, we now use UV to basically neutralize the crypto and giardia if it were to get past our treatment barriers, sedimentation filtration, and such. So, yes, the regulations

mario@broadripplegazette.com A unique program has taken root at the Glendale branch of the Indianapolis Public Library: the IndyPL Seed Library, where individuals can learn about growing various foods. Program coordinator Melissa Wooton explained, “This is our second season. We open in April where patrons can come in and check out seeds, take them home and plant them in their garden.” Mrs. Wooton discussed her involvement with the IndyPL Seed Library. “One of our patrons, Jo Ann Klooz, is a master gardener and a library patron. She came to me in the fall of 2004, asking about a seed co-operative. She was also interested in starting a seed library. To me, it sounded like a good idea and it also sounded like an idea that our patrons would be interested in. By the end of last year, there were 1,568 seeds that people had taken home to plant. We purchased quite a bit of them. We received a small grant from the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation and have a lot of community partners, like Fall Creek Gardens, Purdue Extension and Indy Urban Acres. We also accept donated seed. People seem to like it. We ask people to limit themselves to five seed packets at a time. We’re just giving them a chance to try it out. The idea is not to stock anybody’s garden, but to let people try to grow their own food. We have master gardeners who volunteer for the program who are from Purdue Extension on hand to answer questions. The program runs from April to October.” Indianapolis Public Library Communications Specialist Jon Barnes said, “It features not only special ongoing programs for gardeners and horticulturists, but also a variety of actual seeds.” According to their website, www.indypl.org/IndyPL_SeedLibrary, the Seed Library is located at the Glendale branch and is free and open to the public. It is available during regular branch hours from late March through October. They provide seeds for check-out as well as education and resources about growing and saving seeds and organic gardening. The vast majority of the seeds are open pollinated. Many of them are also organic or heirloom seeds. More information can be found about the IndyPL Seeds Library and all related programs, including a seeds growing database and sponsor page. Future IndyPL Seed Library Master Gardeners Series seminars at the Glendale Branch are scheduled for Saturday, April 23 at 11:30 a.m. and May 14 at 2:00 p.m. A session on “Harvesting & Using Your Herbs” will germinate on August 23 at 6 p.m. People can learn about a variety of topics from Purdue Extension Master Gardeners that will feature the IndyPL Seed Library Resource Fair. A Master Gardener class, “Harvesting & Using your Herbs” is scheduled for Tuesday, August 23 at 6 p.m. Registration is welcome, but not required, by calling 317274-4410 at the Glendale Branch.

have changed dramatically.” I asked, “When was [the White River Treatment Plant] built?” “This plant was built over several decades,” replied Ed. “It was started in the early 1900s, you can see time lines out in the hallway if you want to look at some of the pictures. Originally it had slow sand filters here, and you can see what those were by looking at the pictures in the hall. Then we went to what we call rapid sand filtration which is what we have now. One of the first filter buildings is still in service here. It’s our 12 million gallon building. The 84 million gallon plant was built in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. You can see where it was expanded over the decades. So, this plant, about every 10-20 years seems to go through a major overhaul. The most recent overhaul here was the UV...the addition of UV to this facility.” “You said you do about 60% of [Indy’s] water here. There’s another treatment plant that does the rest of the 40%?”, I asked. “No,” said Ed. “We have four surface water treatment facilities. This is one of the four. This is the largest of the four. Another is Fall Creek, which sits at the confluence of Fall Creek Parkway and Keystone. Another one is Eagle Creek, which sits at 56th and Eagle Creek. It’s called our TW Moses Plant. The fourth one is the newest of the four, which is our White River North Facility, which sits up on White River at 118th and River Road in Carmel. And then, in addition to that, we have five ground water treatment facilities. The largest would be the South Wellfield, which sits down on Southport Road directly adjacent to White River. So, it’s just between White River and State Road 37 on the south side of Southport. Directly across the street from Southport wastewater treatment plant. That’s our south wellfield. There’s another ground water plant about a mile from that one called our Harding Station. It’s at Harding and Southport Road. The next one would be Geist Station, which sits at the base, or right at the Geist Dam, up on Fall Creek Parkway. Ford Road is another groundwater facility, sits over there basically where 865 crosses Ford Road, right there at Zionsville. And then the newest one is our Harbor Treatment Plant, which just came back on line in May of this year [2015]. It replaced two smaller plants that had been taken out of service in 2008 and it just came back on line this year. And it’s a groundwater facility that sits at Morse Reservoir, right at the dam at Morse Reservoir in Noblesville. It’s right there just north of State Road 32.”

The 2 poems below were written on Feb. 10, 2016. They were written for my dear friend Sean Riley who passed into ethereal glory in 2015.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Broad Ripple site of two Presidential campaign offices

The greater Broad Ripple area is the home of no less than two of the five Presidential candidate campaign offices. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has opened an office at 6397 Guilford Avenue in the heart of the Ripple. Sanders’ Indiana Political Director Carli Stevenson said they picked Broad Ripple since they have a community of support here. Stevenson said a Wisconsin win helped the momentum in the next states to hold a primary. She noted the Senator has great grass roots support and support from labor (although no state Democratic official has endorsed the Senator). Stevenson said if you are interested or for more information, stop by their office. Also in the Broad Ripple area, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has opened an office at 7225 N. Keystone. The office opened April 5. They are seeking volunteers for phone banks and door to door campaigning. Details on the Clinton website. On the Republican side, WISH TV reported photo by Bill Malcolm on April 7 that Donald Sanders Indiana HQ on Guilford. Trump will be opening a headquarters in Indiana (and may be open by the time you read this). No word as of press time, however, about headquarters for Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Ohio Governor John Kasich. Be sure and vote in the Indiana primary May 3.

Car free, care free in the Ripple?

My car broke down in Wisconsin where it still sits. (Anyone want to buy a 2003 Saturn Ion?) I have been car free in the Ripple for two weeks. The Yellow Cab back from the train station was ok although the first driver didn’t seem to know where Broad Ripple was (so I took another Yellow Cab which was great). I’ve been on my bike ever since which was ok until last night when I biked to a meeting when it started sprinkling. I’ll be using IndyGo to go downtown and plan to try Uber and BlueCar Indy car sharing as well. I will keep you posted on how long I can take car free lifestyle. Given Indy’s sprawl, it probably won’t be long before I buy a car.

Keep Fido out of the flowers please

Dogs seem not to be on a leash at Marott Park. Dog owners seem to think Marott Park is where Fido can roam free. However, the signs are clearly posted to keep your pooch on a leash. The dog park is at BR Park. The spring wild flowers thank you.

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire) We offer Health Coverage for:

The Climes They Are a Changing Indiana’s wine grape crop could be less than expected this year due to recent blasts of sub-freezing temperatures. Purdue Horticulturist Bruce Bordelon says the weather this spring is similar to those of 2007 and 2012 (remember the Super Bowl in Indy that year?). The state had unusually warm weather in January and February, which prompted grape vines to bud. Then a swath of freezing temperatures and ice storms damaged the young tender shoots, wiping out many yields. The UK is going thru the same thing. Climate change has slowly pushed temperatures up in that area of the world. So much so that the area is now a viable wine making region. A new report predicts a bumper crop for wine grapes in 2016. Growers have been producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes and making rather tasty sparkling wine. However both of those grapes are quite fickle to plummeting temperatures, and UK growers say cold snaps, frosts and downpours still threaten overall production. Here’s a tasty bottle to toast to the passage of time and temperatures. Toad Hollow Risque. Some neighbors and I shared a bottle to celebrate several of the sippers’ birthdays. The tiny bubbles, touch of sweetness, and crisp finish made for a fun way to salute another life vintage. Hard to beat that label too. Under $20 and widely available.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the middle section of the top row which contains 2-3-4-5-6. The 7 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 3. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 4-6. The only place left is to the right of the 5. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

by Laura Minor THE FIRST BROAD RIPPLE FLOOD CAME IN EIGHTEEN FORTY-SEVEN. HANCOCK STREET [NOW WESTFIELD BETWEEN COLLEGE AND WINTHROP] FLOODED BUT THERE WERE NO BUILDINGS THERE YET.

All or Nothing Is an all or nothing attitude about healthy food choices holding you back? As a dietitian, I have the privilege of helping people work towards their nutrition goals. Have you ever been disappointed that you didn’t lose 5 pounds in a week? Often times my clients make great improvements with their food choices but are disappointed with their progress. Sometimes clients focus on the few things they did “wrong” since our previous appointment. When people are ready to make a change, initially they are all in and expect immediate results. If those expectations are not met, it is very discouraging and people tend to go back to their old habits. It’s an all or nothing way of thinking about healthy food choices and weight loss, and it’s a problem for a lot of people. Really think about your expectations and if they are realistic. Having unrealistic goals can set you up for disappointment and failure. Making sure that your nutrition goals are realistic for your lifestyle is the first step in moving past an all or nothing frame of mind. You may be undermining your success and not even realize it. People tend to give up a new health plan when they don’t see quick results. They begin looking for the newest and greatest thing out there that promises an immediate result. As a dietitian, it is hard for me to watch people go through this cycle. A person will come to an initial nutrition appointment with optimism and excitement and go back out into the world armed with their personalized meal plan and goals. I do encourage clients to e-mail me between appointments. I also strongly encourage clients to meet with me regularly until they feel comfortable with their nutrition plan and feel that they are making good progress. However, all of those tools do not stop life from happening. A week or two into healthy eating and a stressful project comes up at work. There was a birthday party with cake and ice cream. A loved one passed away. The weekend ended and they forgot to go to the grocery store so they ordered pizza for dinner, again. If a person has an all or nothing attitude - this can backfire. You might slip up one time and the whole plan goes out the window. Perhaps you caved in and ate a doughnut for breakfast and the whole rest of the day is shot, too. Even if you order a margarita with dinner – you might add on dessert since the meal is already “ruined”. After a person goes “off plan” they sometimes feel guilty and believe they can’t follow through with anything. People will come in for an appointment and tell me they were “bad” on Friday and that the whole weekend was destroyed. As a way to combat this negative cycle, I often ask clients: What went well since I saw you last? Sometimes it takes a person a while to answer this question. They are so ready to confess their “bad behavior” that they have a difficult time recounting small successes. Once they name one thing, they often think of a few other things that also went well: “I kept a food journal, even when it wasn’t all foods I was proud of…and I walked the dogs every other day…and I packed my lunch for work”. Focusing on the positive changes can improve your confidence level. Higher confidence can lead to better management of “off” situations. For example, if you go off of your meal plan at lunch, acknowledge that it was an action that moved you away from your goals, but always refocus on making healthier choices for dinner. This way the whole day is not a wash. Whatever your successes are, recognize them. Focus on the positive. Every choice that you make that moves you closer to your goals is extremely valuable progress. Written by Jenna Murphy, MS, RD.

Small but Satisfying Although I am an avid gardener and enjoy growing food for my family, I am scaling back. So this year I want to give any urban homesteaders some ideas about “smart” gardening. First, I don’t grow veggies that are reasonable when they are in season. Green beans, peas, lettuce, squash are so inexpensive when come to market that I don’t want to compete with the farmers market. Although tomatoes fall into this category, I do enjoy a few heirloom tomato plants. I also grow herbs for seasoning and a selection of edible flowers. Second, I encourage everyone to plant at least a little something: vegetable, fruit, flower. Here are five ideas for small-scale gardening. 1. One way is to use a container or pot to plant one tomato surrounded by basil and marigolds….all edible. Be sure the pot can get at least 6 hours of sun. This will make for stronger and more flavorful produce. 2. A second possibility is to define a very small area and create a garden. This can be laying a ladder down on the ground and filling in the rungs with dirt. It could be using a wooden pallet and filling in the spaces with dirt. You can also create a hanging garden by fixing guttering to an exterior wall, fill with dirt, and plant with shallow root veggies such as lettuces. You will have to be vigilant on watering these. 3. Another is “Square Foot” gardening. Section off a 4x4 foot plot or build a raised bed the same dimensions. This can be divided into 8 or 16 equal sections making a grid by using either string or wood dividers. If it is in the ground, add compost; if in a raised bed, use a good quality potting soil. Again, you will want the garden location to get at least 6 hours of sun. Plant each square with only one kind of vegetable/herb seed or plant. You will be amazed at how much you can grow in a small area. For more information, www.melbartholomew.com and Mel Bartholomew books about Square Foot gardening. 4. Straw Bale gardening is another option. I have used this method for the past 5 years and love it. It is low maintenance and low effort. The bales take a bit of conditioning but after that it is just watering and harvesting. I use bales placed on my asphalt driveway because that location is my only sunny spot. I usually reserve the bales for tomatoes only because I have this family tradition of “every Indiana home must grow tomatoes!” Two weeks before planting, the bales are treated with nitrogen and water every other day and on the final day fertilizer. This is now a wonderful “medium” to grow your tomatoes and other plants. For more information, “Straw Bale Gardens,” by Joel Karsten, of Roseville, MN and www. strawbalegardens.com 5. Finally, just insert a vegetable or edible flower in your landscape. Remembering that most plants need sun, here’s an idea list: Vegetable

Herb

Edible Flower

Cabbages - between yews Lettuce - in front tall plants Bush Tomatoes Garlic - edges Beets - (Goldfinches will eat) Peppers - dot in-between flowers or in pots

Rosemary - shrub-like Chive - around pedestals Parsley Basil - plant around tomatoes Dill - tall and lacy Fennel - lacy, tall and pretty Sage - shrub like

Marigolds - as a border Lavender - between shrubs Day lilies - anywhere Roses - petals are great on fruit salads

Plan to garden this year. This doesn’t have to take a lot of work. There is nothing more satisfying than growing, harvesting, and eating what you have grown. Good Luck. Random Ripplings Many volunteers and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful worked on a very cold Saturday morning to spruce up IndyParks Broadway & 61st Park (although the current park sign shows it incorrectly as “61st & Broadway Park). The park will be renamed this spring to Dan Wakefield Park. Right: Authors Dan Wakefield and Barb Shoup took a break from the cleanup for a picture.
