mario@broadripplegazette.com First Merchants Bank opened their inaugural office in Broad Ripple at 5915 N. College Avenue on January 19th. Reliant Partners commercial realtors Thomas Willey and Scott Lindenberg helped make this a reality. Banking Center Manager Matthew Musgrave shared his perspective behind their decision to branch out there. “Initially, the bank was conceptualized by Ameriana Bank, which was purchased last year by First Merchants Bank (based in Muncie) that inherited the space. The location was chosen because we have a vision for what we wanted to do in Broad Ripple that centered around the idea that we’re a community bank and wanted to maintain a community feel. What better place is there?” he inquired. First Merchants Bank has offices in Indiana, Ohio and Illinois, but local citizens provided input for its interior design at 5915 North College Avenue. “We had a short list of businesses in the Broad Ripple area that we wanted to partner with in order to make this space as comfortable and as homey as possible. When we were researching the Broad Ripple market, we interviewed business owners, residents, friends and neighbors. We really used that data and information which we included in the building. Our takeaways from those interviews from people in and around Broad Ripple value things like buying local and having relationships and connections with the community and organization that give back to the community,” Musgrave noted. While teller booths are traditional in bank branches, First Merchants Bank has amenities not typically found in a financial institution. Tablet computers await customers to enroll in online banking and to open accounts. There are additional tablets for kids and adults to enjoy when they visit. A child can play games while their parent conducts bank transactions. A Micro Café features coffee from Hubbard & Cravens and Wi-Fi where friends can meet, but book clubs and other groups are welcome. A change machine that doesn’t assess fees for bringing in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters is located in the bank lobby. An interactive community board is where customers can write comments and display pictures about what they like best in Broad Ripple. An added customer convenience is a secure ATM in a vestibule area out of the elements where transactions can occur. These are just a few of the unique assets First Merchants Bank provides their customers. Presentations can be given on a large video screen. Job interviews can be conducted as well. Part Thirteen For those readers just discovering this series on the canal now in its 13th part, I will explain why the canal is important and why the Gazette is doing this series. The dam that created the Central Canal was built on the White River in 1836 and the Town of Broad Ripple grew up around it. It is why we are here today. For years the canal has supplied the City of Indianapolis with 60% of its fresh water which is processed for our clean water supply.
From the end of part twelve... “The only other question…,” I followed up, “was from a guy that called the other day. It was about Fall Creek. He said there is a diversion thing where part of the canal looks like it goes off into Fall Creek. And he said “Why is that?” ” Ed Malone, Director of Water Production for Citizens, replied, “It’s a skimmer. The debris that gets into the canal, leaves, whatever, as they flow down through the canal, there’s a skimmer, no different than...if you’ve looked at our Fall Creek treatment plant. You’ve seen where the millrace is, you’ve seen the skimmer that’s out in front of the mill race?” “I have not seen that,” I said. Ed was referring to a metal structure on the south side of Fall Creek Parkway just west of Keystone. This is where the old mill was. Ed continued, “There’s a metal structure that sits out in the river that basically keeps the debris flowing in the river. Same thing is true here. We have what’s called a skimmer that basically diverts anything that’s in the water, leaves, basketballs, whatever, and they go off and go down into Fall Creek.” “So they don’t get processed,” added Sarah Holsapple, Media Relations for Citizens. Ed said, “So they don’t go through the treatment process. We have bar screens at the intake at White River [treatment plant], and up at Broad Ripple (pictures at www. broadripplegazette.com). We have bar screens here at this inlet off of the canal. But, they’re fairly wide. They’re roughly four to six inches opening. So, we don’t want leaves and what not coming into the treatment plant if at all possible.” Ed went on to explain that the aqueduct had openings along the wooden sides to allow debris to fall out onto Fall Creek. “And the reason we stopped doing that,” explained Ed, “in the early 80s, was that the ice would form on the side of the aqueduct structure and was causing deterioration of the concrete of the structure. So that’s why the spillways were moved upstream to where they are today and the skimmer. The skimmer was moved from the aqueduct, to upstream of the aqueduct.”

Future branch designs like this may vary. “It’s possible, but more than likely, we would do research on the local community and what they value and tailoring that bank (location) to that community and neighborhood. A lot of Broad Ripple folks value the environment. We tried to be environmental in the design and construction of the building. There’s also a strong love of the arts here. All of the art in the building is from Indianapolis and the Central Indiana area. The digital photo display ‘Village Wisdom’ combines still life photos of Broad Ripple with layered in text as well. It’s a gift back to the Broad Ripple community on an 80″ inch screen,” he said. “I’ve been in consumer banking and mortgage banking for a little more than a decade with National City, PNC and First Financial Bank. I studied Photojournalism and English at Syracuse University and was a photographer in Indianapolis and Art Director for Dine magazine, which I started,” Musgrave added. His focus is now on growing First Merchants Bank in Broad Ripple and beyond. Reliant Partners commercial realtors Thomas Willey and Scott Lindenberg specialize in real estate brokerage, property management and development consulting. They discovered a historic area with high visibility when opening their office in February, 2016 on the building’s second floor at 5915 N. College Avenue. “First Merchants Bank was in the market for a Marion County branch and Scott had a banking relationship with them. We’re a boutique commercial real estate firm and we were looking for an investment opportunity and decided to construct our own building. When we decided on the design and style, we pitched the idea to First Merchants. They wanted to make a splash with their first branch in Indianapolis,” explained Willey. “We really love the Broad Ripple and SoBro areas and there weren’t any viable, Class A office space options. We have second floor space available for lease adjacent to our office and plans to host events for a variety of occasions in the building with catering available from Binkley’s and Ambrosia,” Lindenberg mentioned. It has enhanced the neighborhood and we hope our project inspires another project in the area. There are a variety of sustainable elements within the building. We have low emissivity glass (Low-E) and structural insulated panels (SIPs are a high performance building system for residential and light commercial construction) and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Mechanical Systems, which are highly efficient HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) systems,” Willey said. Their backgrounds compliment their work. An Elkhart native, Willey was a fine arts major at Indiana State University. He owned an advertising marketing company for 22 years, but transitioned into real estate about 16 years ago. Lindenberg is from Fort Wayne. He studied marketing at Butler University and has a corporate sales background and has been in the real estate industry about 16 years. By opening Reliant Partners office in a historic community, Thomas Willey, Scott Lindenberg and (First Merchants Bank manager) Matthew Musgrave are building a stronger foundation in Broad Ripple.

Johnny McKee, a photography graduate of IU’s Herron School of Art, works at the Ashland gallery and teaches drawing in the SMART program at the Indianapolis Art Center. John Klinkose, a pilot, sailor and swimmer, draws on these experiences as a painter. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts in Philadelphia and has exhibited throughout the Eastern United States. Remembering April 4, 1968 on April 4, 2016 Monday, April 4 Kennedy King Memorial 601 E 17th Street - all-ages, free, 5 - 6 PM
On April 4, 1968, Robert Kennedy broke the news to a large crowd that Martin Luther King Jr. had been killed and urged calm and racial conciliation. Kennedy, who was running for president, was scheduled to make a campaign speech here in the days before the Indiana Democratic primary and he wanted to speak in the heart of the inner-city. Shortly before his speech, as Kennedy’s plane landed in Indianapolis, he learned that Martin Luther King Jr. had died from an assassin’s bullet. Mayor Richard Lugar, fearing a race riot, told Kennedy’s staff that his police could not guarantee Kennedy’s safety at 17th and Broadway. Racial violence indeed would later sweep the country, with riots in more than 100 cities. Lugar urged Kennedy to cancel his speech. But Kennedy insisted that he and his people go on and go alone, without police. The audience in 1968 was estimated to be about 2,500 people – full of influencers and members of young and somewhat radical black groups like the College Room, the Black Panthers and the Black Radical Action Project. Kennedy arrived straight from the airport and had little time to prepare his

KaraKara release debut EP with Butler University record label
Butler University’s record label Indyblue Entertainment released KaraKara’s self-titled debut EP on March 5th. The all original five-song EP will be available in a physical format for $5, as well as on iTunes and Spotify. KaraKara is an pop-rock group hailing from Louisville, KY, featuring drummer Jacob Hollenbach, vocalists and guitarists Sam Varga and Nick Conroy, and bassist Darren Bruner. Recorded over two weekends in October, the EP showcases the band’s talent and diversity as songwriters. As a group of young college students, they bring their energy to each performance. Senior students in Butler’s Recording Industry Studies capstone program run the Indyblue Entertainment record label and music publishing company. Utilizing skills learned throughout their time in the program, students handle the production of the recording as well as the promotion, booking and licensing for artists signed to the label with the guidance of experienced professors. With the potential to see more rainfall during the upcoming months, the city is asking residents to take action and file drainage concerns in Marion County by contacting the Citizens (CEG) Call Center to address flooding in Indy. Marion County residents can file a drainage complaint by following the steps below: 1. Dial the Citizens Call Center at (317) 924-3311 and select Option #2 2. Citizens Staff will investigate the complaint and assign it a service request number 3. Citizens Staff will schedule work to be completed and will either complete the request or assign the request to DPW Engineering for further review Residents can also help address flooding and drainage issues in the city by making sure their drainage ditches allow water to flow. By making sure storm drains and inlets are clear of debris, water flows more smoothly and stops drainage issues from arising.

Sertoma Club of BR honors Frank Hughes for 50 years
On March 23, The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple honored Francis (Frank) Hughes by recognizing his 50 years of service to Sertoma. Of even greater note has been his 50 years of perfect attendance, having never missed a meeting – a truly remarkable feat! Frank joined Sertoma in March of 1966. He served as club president from 1971-72 and has served as club secretary, treasurer and bulletin editor (before email, no less) simultaneously from 19861993. On the state level, Frank served as District Lt. Governor and was on the board of The Sertoma Foundation from 1991-1995, receiving the Sertoma Foundation Achievement Award in 1992. Locally, Frank served an unheard-of second term as club secretary from 2005-2007. He has served on the club board of directors for more than ten years and on “too many committees to count.” Frank estimates that he has participated in more than 500 fund raising activities during his 50 years of membership. In recognition of his service Frank has received a letter of recognition from the Sertoma National President, Debby Larsen, and a proclamation of commendation signed by the National Executive Director, Steven Murphy. The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple is proud to have such an outstanding and loyal member as Frank Hughes has been throughout his half century of service.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

ELECTION PREVIEW – Senate race candidates identified It’s an election year if you haven’t noticed. Besides the Presidential and Governor’s race we have some local races too. Broad Ripple will be getting a new State Senator since RFRA sponsor Scott Schneider is not running for reelection. (He was one of 3 sponsors of the RFRA bill in 2015.) Democrat Pam Hickman will face Republican John Ruckelshaus in Senate District 30 which includes Broad Ripple and runs up to Fishers. It appears that neither candidate has a primary opponent. (Keith Potts (D) has decided not to run. Potts had been motivated by the RFRA issue.) Hickman is the former at large city councilor. Her campaign manager, Aaron Schaler, told the Broad Ripple Gazette: “For more than 35 years, Pam has served as a community leader to improve the lives of those in need and improve the education and health standards for the children and residents in central Indiana. Pamela is a former school teacher, current small business owner, and served on the City-County Council (Indianapolis) from 2012-2016…. Additionally Pam would like the Indiana General Assembly to focus on advancing alternative energy initiatives and believes that the rights of all Hoosiers should be protected.” John Ruckelshaus is a former state representative (1990-92) in this district and was the co-owner at the Carter-Lee Lumber Company for over 16 years He told the Gazette: “Also, I worked in the (former Governor Mitch) Daniels administration as Deputy Commissioner at the department of Workforce Development (DWD) … I feel my experience in both business and public service are needed as a voice of reason in the state senate. The Ruckelshaus family has always stood for inclusion and working together to solve problems.” On the House side, incumbent State Representative Christina Hale (D) will face Connie Eckert (R). On the Washington Township Board, Emily Denton (D) is running against Keely
Gladieux (D) in the primary. I don’t know who the Republican candidates are. For Congress, Angela Demaree (D) or Allen Davidson (D) will face incumbent Congresswoman Susan Brooks next fall. Davidson and Demaree are running in the primary. Don’t forget to vote in the May 3 primary. You now owe IPL $17 before you turn on the lights On March 16, the Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission approved raising the monthly customer charge from $11 per month to $17 per month for IPL as part of the IPL rate case order. (The fixed fee is slightly lower for low use customers.) The move was opposed by the Citizens Action Coalition, NAACP, and other consumer groups which noted it shifted costs unfairly to low users and low income customers (and discouraged conservation). Similar moves in other states including Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Minnesota have been rebuffed by state regulators there. For 100 years, the customer charge has been used to recover metering and billing costs. Now the utility industry wants you to pay for things like the pole and transformers upfront instead of in the per kilowatt hour rate. However, doing so makes it harder for customers to control their energy costs and gives you less incentive to turn off the lights and appliances when not in use. This discourages conservation. It’s also a burden on low users and many low income customers. There seems to be no tried and true method for selecting winners when it comes to the brackets. Not so for bottles. Toad Hollow Vineyards in Healdsburg California has been successfully producing and selling its flagship wine since 1994: Unoaked Chardonnay. “We started with 3000 cases of unoaked Chardonnay and that is all we did. Then we gradually increased production of that wine and added other varietals. It wasn’t an after thought to not age it in oak. It was a conscious decision we made to do that style of wine”, says owner, Francine “Frankie” Williams. During a recent phone conversation she told they were pretty much on their own in making that style of dry white wine. During the 90’s and 2000’s most California producers were saturating their Chardonnay juice with oak to create an over-the-top California Fruit Bomb Style that tasted more like a rich boozy cocktail than a glass of wine for food. Not Toad Hollow. “We wanted a wine that would be good on its own without food but would interact correctly so it doesn’t overshadow or overpower the food,” says Frankie, who along with her late husband Todd, had successfully run several restaurants in the San Francisco area before heading to wine country. The Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa, California is another that has stood the test of time despite family turmoil, buyouts and tricky vintages. In 2011, the winery chose a different kind of madness to support, March Madness, by partnering its Woodbridge line with The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Former ESPN commentator and NCAA winning coach, Jim Valvano created the foundation in 1993 just a few months before he died of cancer. So far, proceeds from some of the Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi wines sold in March have raised over a million dollars for the foundation. Its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon created decades ago still offers the same notes of earthy red fruit, toasty oak, and a touch of vanilla making it an easy drinking wine for game day foods like burgers, nachos, and pizza. Best of all, even if you didn’t win the office pool you can still afford a bottle of either. Both are widely available and under $15.

March BRVA land use meeting By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com There were about thirty in attendance for the March 22 public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee. Chris McElwee, committee chair, called the meeting to order at 6pm at the Indianapolis Art Center. There were three items on the agenda. A. 6556 Ferguson Street, Ed Williams, Mitch Sever, and/or Becky Ruby Wojtowicz regarding a variance of use and the sign regulations to provide for contract florist office and staging facility for special events (not permitted), with a freestanding sign meeting C-1 standards (not permitted). Petition # 2016-UV1-008 Hearing Tuesday, April 5, 2016. This proposal is to add a 3’ x 5’ flat wall sign on the house at 6556 Ferguson Street for Lilly Lane Flowers. Lilly Lane is a contract florist specializing in weddings and other event planning and is currently at 6525 Ferguson Street [C4 on map]. The board voted to support the sign variance. B. 6311 Westfield Boulevard, Michael Rabinowitch and Todd Morris, owner of the property, regarding the redevelopment for mixed uses. This project has been presented before the board several times. This appearance was to explain the final changes to the apartment / retail building planned for the southeast corner of the Canal and Westfield Boulevard. It is planned to have 105 apartment units with 110 parking spaces. There will be 4700 square feet of retail space. The committee decided to hold off on a vote until the next meeting to see the final staff report from the city. C. 6367 & 6371 Guilford Avenue, Tom English and Derek Mills with G. Block, LLC, regarding feedback on a new development. This presentation was for comment only, as the plans are not complete and no papers have been filed with the city. It is for a project planned to replace the two large houses on the southeast corner of Guilford and 64th Street with a four story building. It would have a floor of parking, a floor of office space, and two floors of apartments with a total of 28 units. The north house used to be Audio Solutions. The south house was most recently Skinny Coconut Oil and is currently Bernie Sanders headquarters. The next scheduled public meeting of the committee is planned for April 26th, location to be determined.

Service Dogs: “Mo” not Less The article below is written by a very loyal, and might I say So.Be.Fit.’s “class clown” Walt Alfred. Walt has been coming to us for a couple of years now and is always goofing around and making everyone laugh at classes. We LOVE having him. Unfortunately, Walt has type 1 diabetes and, as I learned recently, his varying blood sugar levels are harder to detect with age. About three months ago, Walt adopted a service dog that alerts him when he needs to attend to a low/high blood sugar. Amazing, right? Here is some more information about these astounding animals, the journey they embark on (pardon the pun), and the journey of Walt and Mo specifically… Moravia (Mo) is a 32-month-old white Labrador retriever trained to be a diabetic alert dog. Walt got him last December through the Indiana Canine Assistance Network (ICAN), the only accredited service dog training program in Indiana. ICAN service dog training takes place primarily inside of Indiana correctional facilities, where carefully selected and trained offender-handlers work with their assigned dog from early in the morning to late in the evening 7 days a week. Training begins shortly after the pups are born. At 3 weeks, the pups and their mother are transferred to the Pendleton Men’s Prison to begin training. Here they learn the basic skills of an assistance dog such as sit, down, touch, under, tug, lap, visit, drop, etc. Every 6 weeks the dogs come out of the prison for 3 weeks to live with an ICAN furlough volunteer whose job it is to socialize the dog to the outside world in their home, work environment, and public places. At about 18 months the dogs are transferred to the Indiana Women’s Prison where they are taught the most advanced tasks and client specific skills, like opening doors/ drawers, retrieving dropped items, providing balance, operating lights, alerting to low or high blood sugar, finding help, retrieving an item out of a cabinet or refrigerator, interrupting a repetitive motion of a child with autism or the panic attack of a veteran with PTSD. At about the age of 2, the dogs “graduate” from the program and are placed with a “client” based on a careful assessment of the client’s needs and circumstances and the personality and temperament of the dog. Due to the rigorous requirements of a service dog, not all dogs make it through the program. Mo almost flunked out because of his rambunctiousness and obsession with squirrels. They “extended his sentence” for an extra 6 months with the hope that in this time they could “rehabilitate” him and find a good client match for his energy level. Then along comes Walt, equally in need of rehabilitation and a service dog and the match was made. Walt was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 40. Type 1 diabetics cannot control their blood sugars with just diet and exercise. Because their pancreas’ either don’t produce enough insulin or none at all, their blood sugars can vary dramatically throughout the day. Both High and Low blood sugar levels can be very dangerous and can cause heart attacks, strokes, and diabetic comas. Over time, poor control of blood sugars can lead to circulatory problems, neuropathy, and blindness. As a diabetic alert dog, Mo is trained to detect low and high blood sugar levels by scent. When his nose tells him that Walt’s blood sugar is not within the normal range, he is trained to nudge Walt very aggressively and persistently with his snout until Walt acknowledges that “he’s got it”. At the gym, Walt typically tethers Mo to something so he doesn’t get in the way, but will periodically check in with Mo during his workout. Mo’s sense of smell is so acute, that he can detect an extremely low blood sugar level from across the room. If he can’t reach Walt to nudge him when this happens he’ll bark instead. But a bark doesn’t always mean low blood sugar. Sometimes Mo and Walt just bark to get attention. Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter The Creep is On Broad Ripple has been a force in my life since I was young. In my early years, we went to Broad Ripple for groceries (A&P), bakery (Roselyn), doctor (Dr. Young), orthodontist, variety store (Murphy’s), theater (Vogue), and the park. It was the center of the neighboring suburbs being developed in the ‘50s. I also witnessed its declines in the late 60s as a retail center, and its vital reemergence as a hot spot for night life and dining. So today it is fun to see the area creeping out of its boundaries. An excerpt from Wikipedia.org: Broad Ripple’s position as a cornerstone of Indianapolis’ youth culture and nightlife is a result of its thriving bar scene and the near presence of Butler University. Staying true to the neighborhood motto “we’re open if you are,” numerous Broad Ripple bars and restaurants remain open as late as 3am – often on weekdays as well as weekends. The neighborhood is home to many of Indianapolis’ premier locally owned restaurants, independent art galleries, private boutiques and specialty shops, and the popular Monon Trail. Within just a few city blocks one can find a wide variety of food, including Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Mediterranean, Italian, Cajun, Middle Eastern, French, English, and Japanese as well as traditional American fare and four independent microbreweries. Entertainment offerings include Indianapolis’s preeminent professional comedy club and multiple venues for live music, showcasing both local artists and nationally touring acts in genres such as rock, hip hop, country, and jazz (at the Vogue). In 2004 a free biweekly newspaper, The Broad Ripple Gazette, was created by Broad Ripple native Alan Hague.[4]
Those who want to claim Broad Ripple’s mystique are now calling themselves SoBro or on the edge of Broad Ripple. The creep has begun: spreading south to 49th street and as far east as Glendale, north to the White River around 71st street and west almost including 52nd and Illinois. The movement outward is a testament to the success of the Broad Ripple persona. There are destinations like Agrarian, Marco’s, Pawn Shop Pub, 54th Street shops, 49th Street businesses all the way to Patachou on Pennsylvania, the Meridian and shops on the canal and Illinois, and moving east to Luciana Mexican Restaurant, Boogie Burger, Vintage Vogue, and Bark Tudor dog school. Thank heavens we get stopped on the north by the White River or I think we would move north and conquer Nora! As shopkeepers, residents, and visitors to the area, we have a lot to be proud of: vibrancy, diversity, fun, an identity, and one of six designated cultural centers of Indianapolis. We’ve come a long way since 1922 when Broad Ripple became officially part of Indianapolis. We will be seeing as many changes in the future.
