alan@broadripplegazette.com It was a packed house at the Indianapolis Art Center for the April 19 Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Spring Social. BRVA President Kent Springer opened the pre-social public meeting at 6:30pm. Kent described the many functions of the BRVA and each of its committees. He then introduced the Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW) Lori Miser. Miser discussed some of Mayor Hogsett’s programs. She explained that in 2016 DPW will be installing around 400 school zone flashers around the county. These flashing beacons will be programmed to slow traffic to 25 MPH only during a school’s arrival and departure times. They will also be programmed to account for all school breaks. Miser also noted that there are two remaining flood levee phases. Both have been funded. 3B2 is the phase that runs behind the Riviera Club. That construction should begin this fall. The other phase is the Westfield wall and it should begin in 2017. Both phases are expected to be complete in 2018 or 2019. Certification will begin after that. “What happens with Rocky Ripple?” Miser posed. “We have been working very closely with them and continue to do that. The Mayor definitely wants to better understand the options for Rocky Ripple, so we are hiring an engineering firm that’s going to take a look at everything that’s been done, experts from FEMA and other federal agencies that are going to look at what’s been studied, are there things that need to be done, to be looked at, other options for flood relief.” She said that all of this will be directed by Deputy Mayor Jeff Bennett. Next was a presentation on the troubling state of Indy’s transit system and future improvements. Then IMPD Chief Riggs detailed many of his ideas for improving the quality of life in Indy. Many of these ideas sounded very promising. There were drawings for several gift certificates that were awarded to audience members. There was also food and drink supplied by local restaurants. The next public BRVA meeting is also the election of the BRVA board. It is scheduled for October 18.
Part Fifteen For those readers just discovering this series on the canal now in its 15th part, I will explain why the canal is important and why the Gazette is doing this series. The dam that created the Central Canal was built on the White River in 1836 and the Town of Broad Ripple grew up around it. It is why we are here today. For years the canal has supplied the City of Indianapolis with 60% of its fresh water which is processed for our clean water supply.
We continue in this installment discussing where the canal ends, at the White River Treatment Plant located at 1220 Waterway Boulevard, just northwest of 16th and Martin Luther King Jr Street. “One of the questions you asked,” said Ed Malone, Director of Water Production for Citizens, “was what are those things [floating in the canal] with the solar panels... Those are what we call SolarBees.” “They are in the [canal] out here,” I said to Mario Morone, Gazette writer, while pointing to the north end of the White River Treatment Plant. “Back by Pic-A-Part?” asked Edwin Morris, Operations and Maintenance Supervisor for Citizens. Pic-A-Part is the auto salvage yard between the treatment plant and the end of the canal. “Yes,” I replied. Ed added, “Those structures sit out in the water and they are basically mixers.” “Yeah, I think I can see them spinning,” I said. “Yes, we feed carbon into the canal right south of the...right downstream of the aqueduct. So, you know where the aqueduct is?” said Ed. I replied that I had been out on the aqueduct before to take pictures. Ed continued, “Just downstream of the aqueduct, where Aqueduct Drive...if you took Aqueduct Drive directly up to the canal [from 16th Street], that is where we feed carbon. And when I say we feed carbon, as a part of our treatment process we use carbon to remove taste and odor, to remove atrazine, if we were to get hydrocarbons...in other words if a car went into the canal or somebody spilled oil or what not into the canal, we need to get it out of the water. So we use carbon to remove a lot of these things. We use what is called activated carbon to remove that. Granular activated carbon.” “We feed that into the canal just north (upstream) of where those SolarBees are. You’ll see a mixer that’s out there that’s basically churning the water. That’s where the carbon feed point is. And then these mixers (SolarBees), as the water continues to flow downstream from that application point, they keep [the granulated carbon] in suspension to increase the effectiveness of the carbon, so that we gain that whole distance as contact time so that we more effectively remove whatever’s in the water.” I asked, “And then generally as it [travels down the canal] it just settles out to the bottom [of the canal]?” Ed replied, “No. We settle it out in our treatment process in those settling basins [at the north end of the plant].” “So it stays up in the water...,” I followed up. “It stays in suspension all the way through into the settling basin,” said Ed. “What did you call these things again?” I asked.

“They’re called SolarBees,” replied Ed. “B-E-E-S. Solar, then Bees. It’s a brand manufacture. This is the only place we’re currently using them. We’re evaluating them on mixing in some of our tanks, too.” Edwin jumped in, “We just had some put in at Fall Creek in the mill race.” Ed recalled, “We did the same thing at Fall Creek. Fall Creek doesn’t have a canal, but has a mill race. You know what I’m talking about?” I answered that I did know about Fall Creek. The Fall Creek Treatment Plant is on the northwest corner of Fall Creek Boulevard and Keystone Avenue. The mill race Ed referred to is in the Fall Creek, which is across the street from the treatment plant. Historically there was a grist mill at this location on the Fall Creek. The mill race directed the rushing water into the mill to turn the wheel. Ed continued, “Well, we still use the mill race as our intake to our treatment plant. So, Fall Creek, where the dam is, is very similar to the same way the canal works, only it’s much smaller. So, the dam diverts water into our mill race and we take it through the treatment plant. And then we feed carbon in that mill race, no different than we do out here in the canal. We use the SolarBees in the mill race to keep the carbon in suspension there.”

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

BRVA and Primary Colours present Installation Nation Preview
Opening Reception: Friday 5/13, 5-9 p.m. at the BRVA office - 6323 Guilford Avenue. Broad Ripple Village Association and Primary Colours are pleased to present the artwork of Dan Woerner, Kate Burnet, and Melanie Cooper Pennington in the exhibit Installation Nation Preview. Featuring two artworks, the exhibition will explore the psychological thoughts of the collective and engage the audience to participate in the emotional pull of the works. The Mob, a collaborative effort of Dan Woerner and Kate Burnet, is an animated video loop of a crowd fleeing a theater projected on the gallery’s walls. The viewer is invited to share in the experience of the lone character fighting the flow of the mob, feeling the same panic as waves of people stream past and they perpetually remain stuck in the same spot. With a vested interest in all things pulp: TV sitcoms, comics, B-horror movies and Time Life Books, Woerner and his long-time collaborator Burnet weave together new narratives with disparate parts through their animated videos, drawings and objects. The Opening Reception of Installation Nation Preview will be held at the Broad Ripple Village Association office from 5:00-9:00 p.m. during the Broad Ripple Spring Art Walk. IPS Commended for Progress in State Turnaround Schools as Broad Ripple Returns to Full District Control
Indianapolis Public Schools is proud to be the only district in the state to have a school return to full district oversight from state intervention this year! Today, the Indiana State Board of Education voted unanimously to end the state turnaround status of Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities. Additionally, the State Board of Education has praised the progress shown at both George Washington Community High School and Arlington Community High School through our Transformation Zone (TZ) model this year. The TZ model was created as one of our district’s strategic initiatives to support struggling schools, and we’re thrilled to see public-facing support of our progress. Five years ago, these three schools were placed in state intervention because of chronically low academic performance. Each school was paired with a lead partner in an effort to identify opportunities for growth in student achievement. After the initial five-year intervention term, the State Board of Education decides whether to maintain or end each school’s “turnaround” status. Five years of “F” accountability grades put Broad Ripple in intervention in 2011, but the Rockets have earned a “B” the last four years. Principal Dr. Briant Williams shared a presentation with Board members highlighting successes at Broad Ripple, including a marked increase in enrollment compared to the 2012-2013 school year. Sophomore Jasmine M. summed it up for the Board when she exclaimed, “The spirit of Broad Ripple is strong!” We couldn’t be more proud of the positive outcome brought by the hard work of Broad Ripple’s staff and students!

Purple Wine to Party Like it’s 1999 Like so many others, the death of Prince hit me hard. His music was the soundtrack of my college years at Butler University. WTLC was THE leading R&B/funk station in the midwest and the radio dial in my car and stereo in my sorority house was glued to it. We would blast his tunes on Friday and Saturday nights, as we readied to go to Frat parties. His show at Market Square Arena in April of 1985 was a night I will never forget. Sheila E opened. He did several encores. And the group of other Prince-loving friends and I were indeed in Purple heaven. MTV was new and his videos were a splendid mix of pop art, sensuality and rock and roll. He played Indianapolis numerous times in many different venues, including an after party at Birdy’s in 2002. I also feel as if he played The Patio or The Vogue though I wasn’t able to find a written report. In 2007, my Warfleigh neighbors and I watched the Colts win a Super Bowl and Prince blow the crowd away during a rain drenched half time show. During my many wine travel trips to South America and Europe I would hear his music played in restaurants, clubs, cabs and wineries. His craft was his life. His passion was discovery on all levels: musical, spiritual, humanitarian. Over the weekend I gathered a group of similar life loving friends and neighbors and we DID party like its 1999. Of the many wines sampled the standout was a new box wine. Vinum Vault Cabernet Sauvignon packs a tooth purpling punch with juicy chewy flavors of black cherry and mocha and long lingering finish. Car free, care free in the Ripple (Week Three) It’s week three without a car. Here’s what it is like: - Cab a great alternative when on time Yellow Cab has been great although one trip required three calls and a 90 minute wait to get a cab. Happily I wasn’t catching a flight. The other three trips were perfect. Note that the cabs and Uber in Indy are apparently not dispatched. The dispatcher sends out a signal and the driver can choose if they want the fare or not. - Rent a car instead I rented a car from Hertz at Penske Honda for 3 days which was also a pleasant experience. I took a cab up to their 96th Street location. - Take the #17 bus downtown (or the #18) I’ve taken IndyGo downtown several times. Even on Sunday, the #17 runs once an hour and during the week you have both the #17 and #18 to go downtown which gives you twice hourly service. - Uber app won’t load I tried to take Uber but my Apple iPhone kept declining my credit card. You can’t take Uber without the smart phone app so I can’t use Uber. - Ride a bike Mainly I ride my bike which has been fine since the weather has been nice and it doesn’t get dark until 830 pm. - Blue Indy blues? I haven’t tried BlueIndy car yet. It looks complicated but I plan to try it eventually. Media reports the city is no longer subsidizing the service with parking revenues and is looking for another subsidy source. One city councilor says they have taken prime parking spots. I think the jury is out on the shared car city-run service but then I have yet to try it. - Save without a car You save money without a car. No trips to Costco. No spontaneous purchases at Target or Kroger unless they fit in your day pack. So I may stay car-less for a while.

Monon Trail - Safe After Dark? The Monon Trail is now open 24 hours. I asked Commander Chris Bailey of the IMPD North District if there have been any incidents on the trail at night. He said there had been only one: a robbery at 3:30 a.m. of an individual walking alone on the trail. He said you should take precautions such as not walking alone and be well lit (if on a bike). I refuse to ride the Monon in the dark and take Westfield instead. Yes there are cars but there are also street lights. Red Line will stay on College despite controversy The recent opposition to building the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit Line on College Avenue will not change the route. The news came at the BRVA meeting on April 19 when I spoke to Sean Northup of the Metropolitan Planning Organization and Mark Fisher of the Indy Chamber (who is backing the line). Northrup told me that College Avenue was originally the site of a street car and is designed for transit. He noted that the area in question (54th and College) is very walkable (especially when compared to car-oriented Keystone Avenue which is not). Fisher said he welcomed the controversy as it showed people are engaged. Phase one of the Red Line will only go to 66th Street (so the debate over moving it over to Westfield further north can come later and will depend on whether Hamilton County votes for the plan and tax as well.) A Marion County ballot measure increasing the county income tax to fund the line and other transit improvements will come this fall. Details on the Red Line are available at www.indygo.net/RedLine. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle and learn another trick. We will try to put an 8 in the left section of the middle row which contains 2-5-6-7. It takes 2 steps. First, see that the 8 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates three possible 8 locations in the center section, leaving two possibilities - between the 6-7 or between the 3-9. Either of these spots would next eliminate the 3 spaces in the left section. The 8 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space to the left of the 5-6. The only place left is to the left of the 7-2. You have learned another technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Okay, I admit it. I got really behind this winter! Here are a few things that happened over the past few months that have been on the include list for some time. -Alan
Athletic Annex Running Centre, 6528 Cornell Avenue [C5 on map], painted a huge mural on the building.
Nicole-Taylor’s Pasta, 1134 E. 54th Street Studio C [OO26 on map] now has signage to show the added back-room eatery.
Agrarian moved from 49th and College to 1051 E. 54th Street Suite B [OO25 on map]
This house at 6174 Winthrop Avenue was remodeled. It had been on the BRVA rezoning agenda to become a hair salon, but The Gazette has not seen any variances filed yet.
The Red Room, 6335 Guilford Avenue [G5 on map], added a new sign on the front that hints at the stairs you take to get up there!
Hotel Broad Ripple, 6520 Westfield Boulevard [C5 on map], painted a historic-inspired sign on the east side.
Union Jack Pub, 924 Broad Ripple Avenue [H5 on map], got new signs.
Village Montessori School is open at its new location 6535 Ferguson Street [C4 on map].

by Laura Minor INDIANA BECAME A STATE IN EIGHTEEN SIXTEEN, TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO THIS YEAR. JUST TWENTY YEARS AFTER STATEHOOD, JACOB COIL PURCHASED THE LAND THAT HE WOULD DEVELOP INTO BROAD RIPPLE.
Trail-erapy A couple of weeks ago a regular, longtime client walked into the studio and said to me “Do you have to time to go to Holliday Park for our workout today?” At first I thought she was teasing, but after it became clear that she wasn’t I was happy to oblige and was excited to get her on the trails. We met in the parking lot and I led her toward the trail that has the steepest hill in the park. As we trekked along she became so perky and repeatedly commented about the beautiful scenery in our gem of a city park. Don’t get me wrong, this lady is not at all a negative person. However, when we were doing our challenging hike while taking in the sound of chirping birds and the flowing river, along with the spring budding trees, laughing kids not on a cell phone, and fellow greetings from other park goers, her demeanor was very content and giddy. It was super cool to witness and since that hike her and her husband have plans to repeat it on a regular basis. Ironically, that very same day I came across an article on Facebook entitled “What Hiking Does to the Brain is Pretty Amazing”. So OF COURSE I was very intrigued to read about this. To say that getting out into nature improves mood might seem like a “Mr. Obvious” statement. Something that may be obvious doesn’t necessarily mean that we will do it. More so, I am always looking to learn the why specifically things happen, particularly in reaction to physical movement. The article starts out to explain how much less we are outdoors than in the past. Only 6% of children play outside on their own volition on a typical week, yet they are spending around 8 hours per day watching TV, playing video games, on a computer or phone. This is a sad statistic and even sadder when you think that this behavior is very likely to continue in their adult lives, passed onto their children and so on. A recent study found that those who took a 90 minute walk in a natural environment showed far lower levels of obsessive worry, depression and anxiety. In contrast the group that walked for the same amount of time in a city reported no difference. Brain scans of the hiking subjects showed decreased blood flow in the subgenual prefrontal cortex. Increased blood flow to this region is associated with sadness, worrying and depression…and hiking deactivates it. Other studies have found that nature experience greatly improves creative potential, problem solving, threat detection and decreases symptoms of ADHD (no wonder I love trail running so much!). Not to mention it being a great calorie burn it also improves memory and self-esteem. Will hiking remove all of your life’s problems? Probably not, but it will likely improve the way you perceive or deal with your woes. Want to find trails located near you? The app called All Trails is a great tool that rates, describes and will even give you GPS directions to get you there. My local favorite trails are at Eagle Creek Park (56th just west of Lafayette Road) and Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park (59th and Post Road). Both offer several miles of well-maintained trails and are easily accessible. If you have any questions fell free to email me. I urge you to get out there and be one with the outdoors. Open the Door to Fun “Go outside and play.” That’s the refrain we heard while growing up. Mom would send us to the yard as soon as breakfast was over, and we didn’t have to come home until dinner or darkness fell, which ever came first. We thrived in the yards, alleys and streets….rarely spending time inside or looking at e-screens. So how can we mentor this generation to get their kids outside playing and moving? I think turning your property into a play yard is a great start. Create a place where there is lots to do and plenty of resources for kids to want to gather. I am going to give you some suggestion sans swimming pool that might make your yard more kid friendly. Structures are great, like playsets, swings, and slides. If you don’t have them you may want to add tree stumps. Using various heights, arrange the stumps to create climbing structures. Add a board and secure it for kids to traverse. Logs are good for sitting and climbing on and also defining areas like fire pits or rooms. Adding covered sandboxes for little ones is good and for older children, dig a track in your sod and make a car racing track. You can keep it clear all summer and include painted mile markers and road signs. For games in your yard beside corn hole, badminton, and basketball, try to recreate board games. Twister: spray the grid of six dots in a line with red, blue, yellow and green spray paint. Teens can practice their skill on this game. Another is to use black and red spray paint. Cut a square out of acetate (sheets that hold photos or notebook protectors) and make a checker board. This will let your kids play checker or chess. Use items around the house for checker pieces, stones and flower heads or clay pot and clay saucers. You can also take on a bigger project and make chess pieces. Your imagination can run wild as you build the King, Queen, Bishops, Rooks, and pawns. How about garden ornaments like using Frogs and create a set or gnomes. I have also seen large scrabble boards painted on cement pads. You can make your own scrabble pieces and play outside on summer days. Don’t forget a tic-tac-toe grid would be easy to draw on the lawn with paint or lay the grid using string or rope. Get a large sheet of plywood and paint it with blackboard paint. Hang it on a fence or the backside of a garage…what a great canvas for hours of creative chalk drawing. If you have a smooth surface driveway, the kids can move to the drive and make wonderful chalk paintings or scribe a hopscotch board. Use #10 tin cans. Screw them to a board and create your own bean bag toss. Put up a clothes line between two trees and start making tents with blankets and tarps. Get a big box and cut out an opening for a puppet stage. Using decorated paper bags, again, the kids can make plays and perform. They may even want to make and sell refreshments for an afternoon of neighborhood entertainment. If you have pets, make an obstacle course. It may not be agility, but you still can create a trail to race your pets. Other kids can come too and start either a race to the finish or the dog that completes the entire course wins. If adults want to come to your yard the magnet could be an outdoor movie theater. Rent or buy the projector, and you can easily make a PVC and sheet screen. Chairs can be stumps, kids can sit in boxes, or you can advertise BYOC (bring your own chair!) All you have to provide is the insect repellent and popcorn! Making summer fun can be right in your own backyard. I love a night around the fire pit singing old songs and telling stories. This is a great way to continue a tradition of going outside to play. You don’t have to go far to enjoy the company of children, family and friends. Add some good food and drinks to any of the above activities and you will have a great summer event just outside your door.
