The Broad Ripple Farmers Market has now switched from indoors at Bent Rail (53rd & Winthrop) to outdoors in the south parking lot of Broad Ripple Magnet High School. Saturdays 8am to noon. April zoning issues at BRVA meeting By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com In April, the monthly public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee met at Northminster Church. It is likely that this will be new the regular meeting place. Next meeting is May 24. There were five items on the agenda, but only one requiring a committee vote. A. 6311 Westfield Blvd. regarding the property rezoning and variances for the establishment of a mixed-use building. Petition # 2016-CZN-804 / 2016CVR-804 Hearing Tuesday, April 28, 2016 before the MDC. This project has been before the committee 5 times. Only minor changes this time. Final plan is 105 apartments with 110 parking spaces. Committee voted to support. B. 5903 College Ave. Gardens of Growth regarding a shade structure over the patio at Ambrosia. This was info only. No variances needed. C. 927/929 E. Westfield Blvd. regarding a new 3-story mixed use building for retail and office use. For concept and design only. This is a new proposal to renovate the old BR Steakhouse building at Westfield and Winthrop, and raze the house to the south (currently New Paradise Cafe) for an office building and add a floor to the small building to the west (currently La Chinita Poblana). Committee gave some suggestions and feedback. D. 845 Broad Ripple Ave. Jimmy John’s regarding an expansion and renovation of the building. This was info only, no variances needed. E. 6364, 6402, 6440 Westfield Blvd. Rogers Pools site, regarding the rezoning and variances for mixed-use development. This was the 2nd time for this project before the committee. This time the north building has been expanded into the parking lot of Veritas (previously Kennington Post American Legion). Plan is for 126 apartments with 163 parking spaces. See photo below.

Comic Carnival was part of National Free Comic Book Day on May 7th. The comic book store that started out in SoBro, then was in Broad Ripple for years, has just moved again to 7235 North Keystone Avenue Suite G. This is in the same strip center near Walmart as before, but a few shops to the east.

She is extraordinarily prolific and has shown her work at galleries in Charleston, SC, Albuquerque, NM, New Orleans, LA, Louisville, KY and Anchorage, AK. She has been published in fashion magazines for her photography and has been commissioned for book covers, murals and portraits of all types. She is currently living in Indianapolis, Indiana.

National Heritage Essay Luncheon “The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple has sponsored the National Heritage Essay Contest for 35 years. Sertoma believes that participation encourages students to better understand the founding principles of our country and consider how those principles affect their lives today. The contest is open to 6th grade students in public, private, and parochial schools in the Greater Indianapolis area. This year, 18 schools totaling 69 classrooms submitted more than 1,441 essays from Marion and Hamilton counties. This was an increase of 340 papers over last year. Classroom winners were chosen from the top three submitted by the teacher from each classroom. Also, a total of 20 finalists were identified for consideration as one of the Grand Prize Winners.” The winners received a plaque and monetary honorarium, the teachers likewise. Mothers of the winners took home the table centerpieces and the other ladies at the guest tables were given a pretty yellow flower in a vase. FIRST GRAND PRIZE WINNER: Sammie Smulyan from The Orchard School, Mr. Justin C. Burris, teacher, Jeff and Heather Smulyan, parents. Essay: “Freedom means the right to have choices, the right to free speech, and the right to vote. I realized the cost of freedom while walking through the thousands of graves in the American Cemetery while visiting Normandy. If these young soldiers on the beaches in Normandy hadn’t sacrificed their lives, all the freedoms I enjoy now would be gone. This one place shows how valuable our freedom is and what others before us were willing to sacrifice so we can live in a free society today.” Second Grand Prize Winner: Sarah Warf from Carmel Middle School, Ms. Page Dorsey, teacher, Wayne and Jennifer Warf, parents. I’m giving you plenty of notice for Charles Bradley’s first Indianapolis show – buy your ticket now. I had the pleasure of interviewing him in 2010 and seeing him perform at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2011. Charles’ humbleness and lack of pretention was totally charming, but it took a tremendous amount of cajoling on my part to get his story. And a good story it is. Charles earned his made-for-soul raspy voice the hard way. His music is very personal. His first-ever album, No Time for Dreaming, released in 2010, is “based on true stories that I lived,” he said. He was inspired by seeing James Brown at the Apollo Theater in 1964 when he was 16 years old. “When I saw him I was completely amazed and wanted to be like him.” But Charles had to make do with a broomstick as a microphone and the rooftops as his stage in Brooklyn; as the youngest of eight, he spent a lot of time wandering the streets. He eventually found a career in cooking, which took him from Maine to Alaska continued on next page

answers on Page 14 to California, where he made his home for decades. “Music and being a chef have been my whole life.” Bradley was able to squeeze in occasional music gigs and a little studio work along the way and was ready to buy his first house. “Then life hit me real hard.” He was laid off of his restaurant job after 17 years. Charles decided to return to Brooklyn. “I learned to be a handyman. I always fix things the right way. Give me the opportunity and I will do it right, that’s the way I am.” He also had more time for music. He started photo by Nora Spitznogle performing his James Bradley at the Austin City Limits Festival Brown routines under his alter ego, “Black Velvet,” when Gabriel Roth of Daptone Records happened to catch his show and recognized Bradley’s raw talent. And the rest, as they say, is history. For the first time in his life he was able to perform full-time. He opened the ACLF show with the heart-wrenching song, “Heartache and Pain,” about his brother’s death. In the interview Charles told me that he puts his whole essence into this music. “If you’re watching me on stage sometimes I turn away, I’ve got to catch myself and let the lyrics out, because I’d be so full of emotion.” He wasn’t kidding. I’ve never seen such an expressive performance. The audience was re-living the day his brother died with him. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. 2nd Annual Garden Walk in Broad Ripple
2nd Annual Garden Walk to raise funds for the LaVerna Lodge for Women, a residential treatment home for women in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse addiction. The walk is slated for Saturday, May 28th. Indianapolis Bike Polo Club qualifier - Arsenal Park
The Indianapolis Bike Polo Club is hosting the Heartland Regional Qualifier on June 11-12, at the polo courts at Arsenal Park 46th and Haverford. The tournament will go all day both Saturday and Sunday. The qualifier will feature 24 teams from across the Heartland region, which includes Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Missouri. The top four finishing teams will go on to represent the Heartland region in the North American Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships to be held in Folsom, California this fall. The Indianapolis Bike Polo Club was established in 2009. As many as twenty members of the club meet three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday) at Arsenal Park to scrimmage, and we are always looking to recruit new players. With the support of the Indianapolis Department of Parks and Recreation, the club maintains the polo courts and contributes to making the park a communitybased environment. Broad Ripple Park hosts 11th annual Dog Olympics
If you’re looking for a dog’s day out with your four-legged best friend, join The Alliance For Responsible Pet Ownership (ARPO) at Broad Ripple Park June 4th for an event that’s sure to bring out your competitive side. Whether you enjoy competitive eating or giving a doggie makeover, there is an event for you. Registration starts at 9:30am, where you can choose from seven events for you and your pawed friend to participate in. Events start at 10:30am and run until 12:30pm. All dogs must be leashed and under control of their owner during the entire event to avoid disqualification. A $30 donation gets you access to all of the events and all money goes directly to helping homeless animals in the Indianapolis community. Each event is also available to be purchased separately for a $5 donation. The Alliance For Responsible Pet Ownership is an all-volunteer organization working with the Indianapolis community to reduce euthanasia at local shelters and find qualified forever homes for each animal that is taken into their care. About 80% of all adoptable animals are pulled from Indianapolis Animal Care and Control, an open admission shelter. Since adoption fees only cover about ½ of medical care expenses for each adoptable animal, ARPO depends on donations, grants and fundraisers to continue their mission. Indianapolis Symphonic Choir 7th annual Carol Competition
The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir announces the 7th annual Christmas Carol Commission Competition as part of its commitment to the future of choral music. Submitted works must be original, unpublished, and have not been publicly performed; between 3 and 5 minutes long; written for SATB, mixed adult choir; and may be a cappella or utilize keyboard accompaniment. Text and language are at the discretion of the composer, and should be suitable for a Christmas/holiday performance. The annual Union Chapel Cemetery Memorial Service will be held at Union Chapel Cemetery at 2 PM on Sunday, June 5th. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Careless and carefree in the Ripple – NOT? (week four) OK, I went all of April without a motor vehicle in the Ripple. It is definitely doable but I am longing for a car. The convenience. The lack of waiting. No uncertainty (until your check battery light comes on.) This week’s adventures: UBER surges I finally got the UBER app to load on my iPhone with another credit card (my corporate account blocked it as an iTunes purchase for whatever reason). When I needed a ride (6:10 p.m. on Saturday 4/23), I was told surge (double) pricing was in effect to encourage more drivers to come out. Would I agree to pay twice the normal rate? No. So I biked to my potluck instead. I haven’t tried Uber or Lyft but still plan to (and plan to try BlueIndy). IndyGo is great when it is on time. I’ve learned coming from downtown at rush hour, that’s not very often. We have two lines that serve downtown from Broad Ripple: the 17 and 18. Or should I say four: the 17, the 17A, the 18 and the 18A. On Thursday, April 21 at 6:37 p.m., I had to wait an extra 20 minutes in the rain for the #17 on my trip downtown. Returning at 7:24 pm was worse. The bus was 53 minutes late and I had to go on their 17A bus which goes to Broad Ripple via Glendale (where the driver takes a break). No sooner had I gotten on the 17A , then the actual bus I wanted, the #17, sped by. So it took over an hour to go downtown and another hour plus to get back. The driver on the way back said this particular run was consistently almost an hour behind schedule. A few days later the same thing happened. I hopped on the 17A at Ohio and Meridian. Due to traffic, it took almost 35 minutes to get out of downtown due to the curious circle route they follow. They go from Ohio and Meridian and then make a long circle back to City Market before heading up Mass. Avenue and then up College. It tacks on an unneeded extra 20 minutes on a good day. The bus was also 45 minutes late. Apparently coming from downtown at rush hour is an issue. It’s annoying. IMA discourages bicyclists On April 28, I had to go to the Indianapolis Art Museum to work at a company
function. I rode my bicycle down via the Canal Towpath which was great except for the geese. Going home, the IMA security guard would not let me exit onto Michigan Avenue and insisted I exit onto congested 38th Street on my bike. Since there is no bike path or sidewalk on 38th, I finally crawled under the security gate to exit onto Michigan Avenue which does have a side walk. “Bikes used to cut through our property,” he complained. The new policies at the IMA are discouraging visitors and decidedly unfriendly to bicyclists—even those going to the IMA as a destination. And $18 to visit is outrageous. This isn’t Paris. Beware of breeding geese When biking, walking or jogging on the various paths in the area, take the “hissing geese” seriously. They are protecting their young and will bite your leg if you don’t get out of the way. If a geese hisses at you (as two did tonight while riding to the IMA on the Central Canal Towpath), move out of their way. They will chase you and even bite your leg with their teeth to protect their young. Hissing geese are no laughing matter. Summer outdoor concerts scheduled at Broad Ripple Park Broad Ripple Park has summer outdoor concerts every other Friday. Holliday Park also has them select Thursdays at 7pm. Here is the Holliday Park schedule (with type of music): June 2 Cathy Morris (electronic violin/jazz) June 16 Matt Roush (popular covers/pop hits) At Holliday Park, Food trucks will be at the concerts from 6pm to 9pm. The outdoor movies start June 3 and run through late August. The fee is $12 this year. The first film is June 3, Bad Boys. I have somewhat of a confession to make. Years back, I was a dedicated viewer of “The Biggest Loser” series. Week after week, I would watch the contestants workout tirelessly, diet diligently and see them shed hundreds of pounds over the course of about 9 months. The finale always amazed me to see the extreme weight loss they achieved, and it seemed that they all had a fresh start on life. The show inspired me, and also at times annoyed me because many of my clients would ask me why they weren’t seeing similar types of results in a pretty short time. Sadly, I would often hear and see that many of the contestants regained most (if not all or more) of the weight they had worked so hard to lose. I assumed that it was due to them going back to their “real lives” in regard to the daily stresses of life: work, kids, food temptations, etc. However I came across a recent New York Times article that shed light on a few other factors that could be significant reasons that these “Losers” returned overweight. The article is entitled After ‘The Biggest Loser’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight. It explained the results of a study that followed Season 8’s contestants that yielded surprising discoveries about the physiology of obesity; and may help explain why many people struggle to keep off the weight they lose. It has been six years since Season 8. The results in a nut shell showed how hard the body fights back against weight loss. The head researcher, Kevin Hall, called the findings “frightening and amazing.” It is based in resting metabolism which determines how many calories a person burns at rest. When the show began, the contestants had normal metabolisms for people of their size. When it ended, their metabolism slowed so radically that their bodies weren’t burning enough calories to maintain their thinner size. Naturally when a person loses weight, his/her metabolism slows due to less body mass. So, initially this was not a surprise. However, as the years went by, and the weight was coming back, the metabolisms didn’t recover and even slowed more. The article states “it was as if their bodies were intensifying their effort to pull the contestants back to their original weight.” They burned between 300 and 800 less calories per day than other people of their size. Day after day of this gap certainly explains weight gain. Another key finding in the study was a very low or complete lack of Leptin which is a hormone that controls hunger. This will result in ravenous food cravings. This unfortunate combination creates an almost no win situation especially in extreme diet/exercise situations. These findings made me very sad for the contestants who worked so hard to lose their obese bodies just to regain it back along with feeling the shame and scrutiny of others. While the article didn’t expressly state this, I feel there was an implication that I agree with. In my opinion and personal experience with clients, extreme behaviors whether it be hours and hours of exercise and/or radical dieting will cause your body to retaliate. The human body is extremely smart and knows when it is trying to be tricked or manipulated. If you eat very little food, it clearly knows it and will hold onto every calorie for dear life. If you workout for hours and hours (especially while eating very little food) it will do the same. And once you return to normal levels of eating and moving, it won’t simply “bounce back” and let the calories go, in what I feel is a protective mechanism from the trauma it experienced in the months of extreme behavior. But don’t throw your hands up in the air in defeat just yet! Moderation, moderation, moderation people! I know that in our society we want everything fast and immediate gratification. But that is simply not the way the body works. It needs time to adjust to gradual changes or it will backfire. Sadly, these poor participants are once again proof of this fact. Moderate and gradual changes in diet and activity are much more likely in long term success in a healthy manner. There truly is no quick fix. Sorry to break it to you once again. Fairy Garden: It’s Magic It’s fairy garden time. I will be planting and imagining what the fairies will desire in my yard this year. I continue adding to the gardens each year. In my large garden nestled under my big sugar maple, I am adding more houses and festoons. The corner tree is perfect for all the children of the neighbor to visit the “big” fairy garden and climb the tree and see the garden from a different perspective. It is the highlight of summer walks with the family for the neighbors. The big maple tree has a wooden owl face affixed to the trunk so that its wisdom overlooks the fairy houses and hopefully all the kids will treat it with respect. Mulch, moss, and stones line the area that is surrounded by an embellished white wire fence (fairy height of course). If you want to enter the area, you have to be small enough to walk through the twig archway made from the fallen limbs from our trees. We have added small garden lights for the late night visitors. In the fairy town you will see houses, businesses like fairy dust and fairy wing shops, a band shell, churches, and troll huts. There are also hanging banners and a fairy dwelling suspended from the low branches. One little cabin has a place to find a piece of paper, write a note, and wait for a fairy to answer. On magical nights, fairies visit and sometime leave trinkets for curious children. Once you have made one fairy garden, it is difficult to stop with just one. I have lost count… my house has six or more. Smaller gardens can be assembled in any kind of a container, small or large: leaky birdbath tops, Weber grill lids, an old wheelbarrow, a large pot, or even wheel hubs. The container is secondary to what you put in it. From homemade or collected objects to store bought, elegant fairy paraphernalia, anything goes in this kind of garden. Begin with a base of sand, rocks, or plastic packing peanuts for drainage. Add good potting soil. You can either landscape the area first or put in your houses, birdbaths, rocks, tables/ chairs, figurines and then add plants. The landscape doesn’t require many plants. I use some from my yard like miniature hostas, mosses, violets, and ground cover. A small rosemary plant makes a great tree and different thymes are just the right touch. Local nurseries usually have wonderful selections of small flowers to add delight. Watering and pruning is required for the maintenance of your garden. Be sure to provide some shade so that the plants will not perish in the hot sun. My gardens are in fairly heavy shade. What’s also fun as a fairy garden landlord is the collecting of items for the garden all summer long. You will be amazed at how jammed it can get! The garden can continue to change for the seasons. Add a flag, a pond, a pumpkin, or a scarecrow. Summer is the high season for fairies. Your garden works like a charm as a conversation starter for visitors, and you will want to invite passersby to stop and admire your handiwork. And the best part about a fairy gardening is that sometimes, if you are lucky, you just might catch a glimpse of a fairy visiting. Joseph Ricks Achieves Rank of Eagle Scout

Joseph Ricks, 17, has received Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. Ricks, a member of Troop 174, is a junior at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School and has been involved in Scouting for five years. Ricks achieved the Eagle rank after demonstrating leadership as patrol leader, troop guide and den chief before completing his Eagle project. Only 4 percent of Scouting’s national membership attains the rank of Eagle. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Ricks built a split rail fence along a trail at Marott Park. The park, located at 7530 N. College Avenue, now has better safeguards for visitors as they walk along the park’s ravine. There were 52 volunteers who dedicated their service to assist Ricks in completing his service project between November and December of 2015. Boy Scouts of America is a youth development organization that’s designed to prepare young people to make ethical and moral decisions throughout their lifetimes. The goals of Scouting consist of citizenship training, character development and personal fitness. Throughout the Boy Scout program, young people are encouraged to advance through ranks by fulfilling requirements in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills.
