The Broad Ripple art fair was back at it again this year, celebrating the arts on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22 at the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Center on 67th and College Ave. Saturday morning started off covered in puddles and a tad overcast, but the weather brightened up as busloads of people rolled up to the fair. There were over 225 artists displaying original work. The art fair had it all–from canvas paintings to birdcages; from drawings to decorative doorbells; or hand-bound notebooks to hand-bound notebook necklaces. The artwork wasn’t just visual. There were also a number of live bands offering their groovy sounds, and food vendors providing a tasty lunch and free smells. Art lovers from across the nation traveled here to share their work. “I drove here straight from North Carolina, just for this event,” said Dave Goldman, an oil painter. Many of Goldman’s oil paintings depicted seascapes and open skies–typical scenery from the beautiful east coast. It was evident that several artists from faraway brought their hometown charisma with them. Marcos Bautista, a weaver, brought his creations all the way from Oaxaca, Mexico. He offered artisan rugs and handbags with patterns inspired by traditional forms and images of Oaxaca. “Everyone in my town made rugs,” he said. “I started when I was 9 years old.” As of one year ago Bautista is an Indianapolis resident, continuing to create and share his culture with the US. In contrast, there were dozens of Indianapolis natives attending the fair. For example, illustrator David Frohbieter contributed his “historically inaccurate illustrations.” He claims, “Art takes itself too seriously sometimes.” Consequently, his paintings consisted of alien abductions over the Coliseum and monsters attacking Monument Circle. One particular Indy native has been in the Broad Ripple Art Fair since its very first occasion, 46 years ago. This art fair veteran goes by the name of K.P. Singh. He creates architectural drawings of historical buildings and places of worship. At the first fair, he sold his work in a friend’s booth. “At that time, the art fair was by the canal,” Singh explained. “I lined up six of my pieces on the curb, and sold everything that day.” He and his son Robbie haven’t missed a fair since. “Over the years, the art show has grown in size, stature, and beauty. In so many ways, it’s more than just fine art. It’s a presentation of art itself,” he said. “It’s been a joy to see it evolve and grow. The art fair had some fantastic experienced artists, but just like K.P. Singh, they all had to start somewhere. This year was Jessica Green’s first art show… ever. She’s a painter who specializes in Indianapolis downtown architecture. “Since 2012, I’ve been on a mission to paint 500 paintings,” Green said. As of now, she’s completed somewhere

BRHS Alumni Assn awards four scholarships If you graduated from Broad Ripple High School, you are automatically a member of the Broad Ripple High School Alumni Association. The Association’s mission is to support the school and its administrators, teachers, students and graduates. The annual awarding of scholarships is an important function of the Association. No annual dues are collected. All of the funding for the Association’s efforts comes from voluntary contributions and from the sale of alumni apparel from the Alumni Association website. This year, the Alumni Association awarded four scholarships to deserving graduates to assist them in continuing their education. The winners this year are: Alumni Association Merit Scholarships: Ruby Smith ($1,000) Chyna Johnson ($1,000) Class of 1955 Improvement Scholarship: Jason Nguyen ($1.000) William & Helen Atkins Memorial Scholarship: Dioseline Jimenez ($700) These scholarships can make a significant difference in the lives and careers of the recipients. The Association invites you to join them in their mission. You can get involved with the Association Board and/or contribute funds to support their efforts. Your actions can make a difference for BRHS programs and students. Go to the Association website at www.BRHSalumni.org to get more familiar with the organization and your potential role. The multi-page website also includes information about class reunions, upcoming events, BRHS history, favorite teacher and coach rosters, BRHS apparel offerings, and it has dozens of BRHS Yearbooks on line that you can open and page through. Since the BRHS Alumni Association is a 501(c)13 not-for-profit organization, all donations qualify as charitable donations for income tax purposes.

Commercial Article is the studio’s offshoot publication that explores design figures from Indiana whose lives and work have been under-documented. In “Article 08” they feature George Philip Meier, a prominent fashion designer in Indianapolis in the early years of the 20th century. His wife Nellie Simmons Meier was a scientific palmist who consulted movie stars, artists, adventurers and at least one president. Their life was filled with glamorous trips to Paris for months at a time. When they came home, it was to Tuckaway — their ornate Indianapolis house that has lived on in legend many years after the deaths of its owners. The Sholly’s are celebrating the launch of the new issue at PRINTtEXT with drinks and treats. IndyPL’s Summer Reading Program Kicks Off on June 6!
Children and families are invited to experience the joy of reading and be a part of Indiana’s 200th birthday celebration during The Indianapolis Public Library’s 2016 Summer Reading Program, “The Summer Reading Book Bash,” beginning Monday, June 6 and continuing through Saturday, July 30. Participants can register at any IndyPL location, including the Beech Grove Library which will merge with IndyPL on June 1. Led by Garfield, created by Muncie, Indiana-based cartoonist Jim Davis, young readers will be inspired to earn points for their reading activity, regardless of difficulty level, that can be exchanged for free prizes donated by community sponsors, many of which spotlight Indiana’s experiences and community attractions. Adults also can earn points for their younger children by reading aloud to them. Readers seeking greater point rewards can choose from a list of notable Bonus Books that pay tribute to our Hoosier heritage, with many titles featuring an Indiana connection. Among other prizes to earn are tickets to an Indianapolis Indians game, including Library Night at Victory Field on Monday, July 18 at 7 p.m. sponsored by Finish Line Youth Foundation. Brown Law Office recently opened a new location in Broad Ripple south of the canal on Broadway, in an office building she purchased using U.S. Small Business Administration 504 financing from Huntington Bank and Indiana Statewide Certified Development Corporation. Indiana Statewide CDC works with local lenders to provide SBA 504 loans to owners of small businesses. SBA 504 loans can give small business owners long-term, fixed rate financing similar to commercial loan terms available for large companies. Brown says, “The loan process was very easy. Indiana Statewide CDC explained everything.” She adds that the loan terms -- compared to rates and down payment requirements for most commercial loans -allowed her to enhance her office with hardwood floors, furniture and a sign out front. Brian Burrell was the commercial loan officer for Huntington Bank who proposed SBA 504 financing. Indiana Statewide CDC Executive Director Jean Wojtowicz says, “SBA 504 loans help small businesses grow because borrowing companies can put as little as 10 percent down and receive a low, fixed interest rate for as long as 20 years. The SBA guarantees bonds sold privately to finance a portion of the loan. With the guarantee, we can offer loan rates more favorable than those of commercial financing.” Brown employs two assistants full-time in the office and two others in part-time roles. She has represented more than 400 health care professionals -- nurses, physicians, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians and others -- before their professional licensing boards in Indiana. She also co-counsels with attorneys in other states. Brown says, “Most of our clients are hardworking professionals that never thought they’d get in trouble before their professional board. Yet it happens. Anyone – a patient, co-worker, supervisor, family member – can file a complaint against any health care provider, and once that happens they have a short time to respond. We help our clients gather and preserve evidence to protect their license and prepare a response and defend them if and when administrative charges are filed.”

Over 600 seasonal positions available for 2016 Indiana State Fair With over 250 acres of grounds and nearly one million visitors annually, the Indiana State Fair requires a village to operate. The Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center is looking for hardworking, dedicated, and enthusiastic people to fill more than 600 seasonal positions for the 2016 State Fair. To help identify potential candidates, the 8th annual Indiana State Fair Job Fair will take place on Wednesday, June 1 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Farm Bureau Building for applicants ages 14 and up. The line will start forming at 2:00 p.m., and everyone in line before 6:00 p.m. will be able to fully participate. Whether the first person in line, or the last, all Job Fair attendees will have an equal opportunity to fill out an application for employment and receive an initial interview onsite. A resume is not required but will be accepted. Of the approximately 600 positions that were filled in 2015, nearly 80% were filled by Job Fair attendees. Available positions include: ticket sellers, gate supervisors, security personnel, parking attendants, parking supervisors, facility operations staff, tractor shuttle staff, information booth staff, livestock staff and educational exhibit staff. Depending on the department, a shift can be between 6 and 12 hours long, but the work is vital to maintaining the atmosphere of the Fair. Customer service is of the utmost importance as many seasonal employees are the first face that fairgoers will see upon entering the Fairgrounds and will set the tone for the Fair experience as a whole. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

FEMA restores flood insurance The City has reached an agreement in federal court with FEMA and Indianapolis has been reinstated into the national flood insurance program. FEMA had canceled the program for Indianapolis in a surprise move in late April claiming the city failed to meet certain criteria. The City now has to adopt certain technical corrections into the flood protection ordinance.

Carless and carefree in the Ripple (end of series) My car is back from Wisconsin (complete with new alternator) and I’m happy. Detroit wins after all. I still take the bus downtown sometimes, though, and also can be found on the Monon Trail riding my bike to the gym, the store, etc. Still, it’s nice to have a car in the Ripple. And I’m very disappointed to discover IndyGo service is worse than I realized with buses frequently late coming from downtown. County income tax hike set for vote to fund transit The City Council ok’d allowing voters to hike the income tax 0.25% to fund transit. The vote will be in the general election in November. Marion County already has a very high county income tax rate (higher than Hamilton County) so it will be interesting to see if it passes. The Indy Chamber released a statement in support of the vote. Indeed, their Mark Fisher is leading the charge supporting passage of the income tax hike to fund transit. Broad Ripple’s City Councilor, Colleen Fanning, voted in favor of sending the issue to the voters. Legislation enacted two years ago requires each county in the region to have a vote and also bars light rail. It couldn’t be more complicated. So don’t hold your breath for a truly regional transit system unless you plan on moving. Broad Ripple Pool opens Broad Ripple Pool will be open May 28th to August 7th. Hours are Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm and Sundays 12pm-6pm. Swim team and swim lesson registrations are now being accepted. Call 317-327-7161 or visit indyparks. org for more information. Can it be Race Weekend? The Indianapolis Motor Speedway makes history this year with the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. You can’t pack glass beverages in your coolers so maybe it’s time to give wine in a can a try. Sofia sparkling wine in a can from Coppola Winery is excellent. Off dry with tiny bubbles. Many Indiana craft beer makers serve their brew in cans. As I walked into work the other day, my client asked me if I had seen the front page of the paper. When I told her no she informed me that Indianapolis once again ranked dead last in a list of America’s Most Fit Cities. As I was disappointed, I can’t say that I am all that surprised, as we had the same infamous title last year and quite possibly in other years as well. At first thought it confused me as I am around people being active all day and who are consciously trying to improve their health. So, I guess I am a little jaded by that, as it clearly isn’t the “norm” of our beloved city. On paper, Indy seems like it wouldn’t have such a demeaning title. We have the largest half marathon in the country boasting over 45,000 participants. We have miles of greenways such as the Monon Trail and the Central Canal, bike lanes on most major streets, and a successful bike share system. We have awesome inner city parks such as Eagle Creek and Fort Ben that offer an array of activities for all fitness levels. We have an awesome walkable downtown that has been recognized nationally and was a large part of the reason that we were able to host the Super Bowl a few years ago. We are international home to the prestigious American College of Sports Medicine. Every weekend there are at least a half a dozen 5K walk/runs. Just to name a few…. So, why the lag? The article states that the lower end cities do not have the same access to parks and outdoor activities as higher ranked cities. They also cited a strong public transportation as it contributes to more walking and standing which, in my opinion, we do not have at the moment. Smoking rates and obesity were also factors on the list. And we can’t discount the plethora of junk food restaurants peppered all over our city (but is it really that much more than most others?). I will start by saying that YES I agree that getting out for a run/bike ride/hike most likely will take a much more concerted effort in Indy than the top ranked. In doing so, it usually requires you to plan ahead, drive to an area where it is safe and easy to do so, etc. And I literally know only one person (personally) that rides his bike to work year round, probably because our weather is so variable that the vast majority of people don’t want to deal with the hassle of doing so, let alone getting cleaned up after the fact due to the lack of facilities in most workplaces. I read a statistic that 95% of the Washington D.C. population live within a 10 minute walk to a park. In Indianapolis it is 31% (and I was actually surprised to read it was that high. And many of you active folks may be scratching your head as on any half way decent day the monon looks as busy as I-69 as rush hour. But, I urge you to look around… you will likely see the same faces day after day. I feel that the people of this city are either all in as in being active most days of the week or all out, as in being pretty much sedentary. And the former is far less than the latter bringing our national average to be so low. Being active and eating better is possible for just about everybody. It just takes a little more effort depending on where one lives. The basic idea is that if a city makes it so easy to be active that it is almost a “no-brainer” it is much more healthy than a city that makes it extra work to get moving. Hoosiers! Let’s take so much advantage of our options that it will force the city to follow suit so that we can move up this list and look better in the eyes of the rest of the country. Some of the recently promised flashing school zones have been installed. This one is for the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired at 75th and College. There are also working flashing systems for Park Tudor at 71st and College and for Christ the King and Chatard on Kessler. As of press time there were no flashing systems at any of the local IPS schools. These flashing systems allow for full speed traffic when not flashing. The 25 MPH rates are in effect only during school loading and unloading.
by Brandt Carter Beginning Birdwatching 1 Many of you sit on the patios of the Broad Ripple restaurants and enjoy the outdoors or walk the Monon Trail and streets of the village. You may see a quick movement or here a cheerful birdsong without knowing what the creature is that distracts your attention. This is the first column about birds you might see in Broad Ripple.
American Robin
Sparrow
Starling or Grackle
Chickadee

The American Robin is a very common lawn bird that you can see on the lawns, gardens and parks in Broad Ripple. In the spring, summer, and fall you may catch of glimpse of them looking for worms on the grounds. Later in the day, you may sight them in berry bushes or fruit trees. They may have up to three broods a season, and most of us can identify their egg color—robin’s egg blue. In winter you may spot them in groups but sitting in trees more than the ground. The robin’s song is a string of 10 or so clear whistles made up of a few repeated syllables, and often described as cheerily, cheer up, cheer up, cheerily, cheer up. Yes, they are here all year. Normally you will not see them at your birdfeeder, and they will not nest in a birdhouse you may put out. “His Eye is on the Sparrow” is a beautiful song about the importance of the least significant. The sparrow is proliferous, and there are many species that may even cause the best birdwatcher to hesitate before identification. They are the “little brown bird” that will grab a crumb from the patio floor of one of our restaurants. They are ravenous seed eaters emptying a feeder in no time flat. Sparrows are also opportunistic birdhouse dwellers often pecking out the hole of a wren house so they take over the house. They are intruders in bluebird house and often have to be evicted by force. Although there are at least 35 types of sparrow species in North American, you should be able to ID these in no time flat. The Starling and Grackle are two of the “black birds” you might see. They are by far my least favorite birds. These rascals are raucous, ravenous, and often bullies. Starlings have a short tail and longer, slender bill. In the winter starlings have a highly speckled, iridescent coat, while in the summer their plumage is much duller brown/black with less speckles. Only 100 of these birds were released in Central Park in late 1800’s, and now there are estimated well over 200 million. Grackles have glossy or iridescent feathers, usually all black. Grackles are also less chunky than starlings and have longer tails and a sleeker build. Their beaks are dark in winter and yellow in summer, and they have black eyes with a yellow ring. They both do a lot of walking on long legs in search of insects and just about anything they can find including garbage. They do not nest in birdhouses but they will visit both suet and seed feeders, especially when there is snow cover. There are solutions for keeping them from your feeder. This bird is not only dainty and fairy-like but its song is its name. If you hear the “chick-a-dee-dee-dee”, you will know the bird is about. We have both black-capped and Carolina Chickadees, and I don’t distinguish. They are usually the first to find a new feeder and seldom remain at feeders except to grab a seed to eat elsewhere. They are acrobatic and their flight is bouncy. They will eat suet, sunflower, and peanuts. Most birds that associate with chickadee flocks respond to chickadee alarm calls, even when their own species doesn’t have a similar alarm call. They will nest in nest boxes. Our state bird, the Northern Cardinal, is probably the easiest to spot because of his color. The cardinal’s notable song “Cheer up, Cheer up, Cheer up” or a second one, “Chip, Chip, Chip.” can be learned quickly. You will learn the female is not red but a dull tan with reddish tinges. They enjoy seeds at birdfeeders like sunflowers, peanuts, and safflower. The nest in the open so they will not use any birdhouse you may hang. The cardinals prefer to hang out in dense shrubs and tangled branches, The males will defend their zone from intruders and can be seen fighting their reflections in a window or car mirror. Seven states, including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia claim cardinals as their state bird. It is also the mascot for countless sports teams including Ball State.
I hope by the next column you have spotted all five of these birds. You should be able to do this even through the window at McDonald’s. If you do, share your new skill with a young friend. Random Ripplings On Gazette delivery day last time I stopped in to deliver at United Repair Service Alterations at 817 Broad Ripple Avenue [G4 on map] like I have for 13 years. Owner John Anagnostou announced that this day was his last day before retirement! I had to get a final picture of the brothers John and Nick outside of the shop they have owned since 1973. They were the third owners of the alterations shop. In the 1950s United Repair was on the other side of the street at 712, about where BMO Harris Bank is today. The Anagnostou brothers were always good to the Gazette. We will miss them!
