Broad Ripple Area Traffic Plan - pilot program
Beginning in June 2016, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW), will begin the Broad Ripple Area Traffic Plan. This plan is a pilot program created in coordination with the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA), and neighborhood input received at public information meetings in the Broad Ripple area and a neighborhood survey. The BRVA convened a parking committee comprised of Broad Ripple residents and business owners who volunteered their time to work on various parking solutions. They reviewed survey results, conducted public meetings and met with DPW officials to design the pilot program. Further background may be found on the BRVA website at: http://brva.org/our-work/parking/ This pilot program will be implemented to allow a determination of the effectiveness in improving safety in the community. The following changes will be made: • The addition of all-way stop signs at the following intersections: Paxton Place and Guilford Avenue; Carrollton Avenue and 60th Street • The installation of “No Parking Here to Corner” signs which will provide parking restrictions up to 30 feet at intersections. • Removal of parking lanes on one side of the street near residential areas. The changes will occur in the area south of Broad Ripple Avenue, north of Kessler Boulevard, east of College Avenue and west of the Monon Trail. A map indicating specific changes is located above. After 6-9 months, the BRVA and DPW will seek public input as to the effectiveness of the pilot program.

How did people get around before planes, trains and automobiles? Aside from the classic horse and buggy, communities relied on waterways to travel throughout their village, or to other communities. Before six lane highways and national interstates, waterways were what truly connected people and places, making them one of the most important aspects in a community. Many people don’t know the city of Indianapolis contains six different waterways: Fall Creek, Pleasant Run, Central Canal, Little Eagle Creek, Pogue’s Run, and White River. Sadly, they’ve lost that sense of importance to our community. Although an organization called Reconnecting to our Waterways (ROW) is making an effort to change that. Their goal is for the people of Indianapolis photo courtesy of ROW to be reconnected to Art project at Central Canal in the Riverside neighborhood our major waterways by embracing cultural, economic, and educational opportunities made possible by revitalizing community spaces, and in the neighborhoods around them. “We are working as a team of organizations and individuals to reclaim our Indianapolis waterways and the surrounding neighborhoods,” said the director of ROW, Corrie Meyer. “It’s really about strengthening our waterways; and in turn, our waterways strengthen our neighborhoods.” This seems like a pretty daunting task; given there are hundreds of miles of waterways here in Indy. Although Meyer and her team make it simple by breaking it down. ROW identifies six elements to apply to any waterway or neighborhood project. These elements are: aesthetics, education, connectivity, ecological, economical, and well-being. “There’s a committee for each waterway, and then there’s a committee for each element,” explained Meyer. “Our committees are made up of the residents who live in the neighborhoods along our waterways, and professionals in the industry they represent. For example, there are professionals in economics. We have a whole committee that focuses on economic development.” They also work alongside “quality of life” plans already set in place by GINI (Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiative) and LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation). “It’s a big team effort.” Meyer remarked that it would be impossible to summarize all of ROW’s accomplishments since they launched in 2012. Although in 2015 alone, with their partners, they’ve invested over 31 million dollars into our waterway neighborhoods. “This includes trails, art pieces, creative place-making, and opportunities for arts and culture in all neighborhoods, not just some.” Recently, ROW awarded grants photo courtesy of ROW totaling $250,000 to Fall Creek, Bike-powered kaleidoscope at Pleasant Run Central Canal and Pogue’s Run. This money will support projects utilizing arts and culture to shape the physical and social character of Indy neighborhoods. If you would like to check out their current projects, go to http://reconnectingtoourwaterways.org. ROW emphasizes that all neighborhoods are equitable. They strive to service every neighborhood, not just one or another. If you live in a neighborhood surrounding one of our Indianapolis waterways, reach out to ROW by contacting Director@ ourwaterways.org. Since ROW functions on teamwork and collaboration, they always welcome to help from professionals, businesses, artists, or residents.

Rolo Experience I was recently in line at Kroger Glendale and saw a pack of Rolos on the floor below the candies. There was no section for the Rolos. The Rolos lie prostrate in isolation on the floor. Then I started to think about how much I had enjoyed Rolos in the past. It had been a few years since my last Rolo experience. I also thought about how they would be cold. (I keep all of my chocolate in the fridge). I bought the Rolos. Walking home I tried to think of the last time I even heard the word ‘Rolo’. The best I could come up with was ‘Rollo’ on Sanford and Son. But I am almost certain that ‘Rollo’ would have spelled his name with 2 LLs. I can’t recall “Rollo” ever spelling out his name on the show. ‘Rollo’ was not even a main character on the show. He appeared on quite a few episodes as Lamont’s best friend. Anyway, when I got home I placed the ‘Rolos’ in my fridge. (They were great cold.) I guess my only point in writing this story was to give you a window into how insanely my mind works. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

BR Pool abruptly closes Sundays BR Pool is now closed Sunday. Ronnetta Spalding of Indy Parks explained that there is a life guard shortage this year. Rather than close the pool altogether, they are closing the BR pool on Sundays. Some city pools were closed two days per week. Per Ms. Spalding: Lifeguards are in great demand, and Indy Parks is not the only group experiencing shortages. We continue to interview and place new lifeguards as people apply, go through training and are ready for service. We still do not have enough lifeguards to be fully staffed at every pool. As such, the “closed days” allow us to keep pools open for the entire summer with slight schedule modifications. Some of the other pools will have two closed days instead of one. We will follow this schedule throughout the summer. The revised hours are Monday: 11 a.m.—6 p.m., Tuesday: 11 a.m.—6 p.m., Wednesday: 11 a.m.—6 p.m., Thursday: 11 a.m.—6 p.m., Friday: 11 a.m.—6 p.m., Saturday: 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. , Sunday: Closed (Still, working people only have weekends to use the pool since it closes at 6 p.m. week days. The pool also closes altogether on August 7. )

Off the Wall Wines for Summer I checked out the wine selection at the newly opened Meijer on Keystone. Like many other local grocers, this one offers a broad selection of varietals, brands and prices. You can satisfy your K-J Chardonnay fix or buy wines like Kung Fu Girl Riesling and Boom Boom Syrah that were once ONLY available at independently owned wine shoppes. It’s summer, so have some FUN with your wines. Explore the locals for a change of taste. From Michigan, Leelanau Cellars offers some semi sweet blends under the Summer Sunset and Spring Splendor label. Good Harbor makes a tasty cherry wine. Chill them, and serve in a tall glass with some sparkling water and frozen berries as “ice cubes”. Indiana wines are easy to find at the new Meijer. Easley’s award winning Traminette, Indiana’s Signature Grape, is a light, tart, white. French Lick’s White Blend offers the naughty but nice blend of niagara and vignoles. The label is pure fun too, featuring the Doty Family’s new wine character “Coco”. Both of these bottles would make for great conversation and quaffing on your patio or deck. Huber Sweet Marcella, when chilled, IS dessert in a glass. Oliver Winery’s Orchard Stand line of wines can become a summer slush by mixing with frozen fruit and ice in a blender. Another sign of summer is the Indianapolis Art Center’s classes for kids and teens. Be sure to stop by the IAC and take a look at the Graffiti Mural class’ work on the wall. The vibrant work by these talented teens reminds us all to step away from the digital world and lap up the flavors of the season. Jill A. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. A new technique! We will try to put a 9 in the lower right section of the HARD puzzle that contains 1-2-3-5. First we can figure out roughly where a 9 goes in the lower right section. The 9 in the left center section eliminates the spaces above the 4, and the 9 in the bottom middle section eliminates the 3 spaces in the row between the 6-5 and the 4, forcing the 9 to be in one of the two spaces next to the 4. This eventual 9 placement will eliminate the spaces on both sides of the 2 in the lower right section. The 9 in the lower middle section eliminates the two spaces to the left of the 5. The only place left is next to the 3. You have now learned a NEW technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Your Most Valuable Muscle One thing that I enjoy so much about my line of work is the wide variety of people that I have the pleasure of interacting with every day. I have clients of all age groups, abilities, backgrounds, occupations and, my personal favorite, interesting stories of their lives. I love to engage with each person to see what makes them “tick” and try to harness that to promote their personal fitness and wellness journey. The other day, one client in particular said something that struck me and it became the inspiration for this article. This gentleman, who happens to be in great shape and has a great diet, owns several funeral homes, a crematorium and a monument company. When we were chatting the other day he said, quite frankly, “You would not believe the number of 50-year-old men who come through my business” and I knew exactly what he meant. He was speaking of the number of heart attacks that happen unnecessarily due to lifestyle. Heart disease in men is a huge concern in the US, killing approx. 321,000 each year–that’s 1 in every 4 male’s deaths. What’s even more disturbing is that half of men that die suddenly from heart disease have no previous symptoms, and 70-90% of sudden cardiac events occur in men. One statistic I read stated that cardiovascular diseases claim more lives than all forms of cancer combined. Wow… And women don’t have it much better off. 1 in 3 of women’s deaths is related to heart disease, and the symptoms can be harder to detect than a man’s. The biggest culprits for heart disease are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and smoking. But several other factors such as diabetes, obesity, inactivity and poor diet are also contributors. The good thing about this is that heart disease CAN be very preventable with healthy lifestyle choices such as a good diet and exercise. Speaking of symptoms, let’s review what to watch for in each gender. Men typically have chest pain, discomfort or pressure. Others include: discomfort in arms, jaw or back, shortness of breathing, and a heartburn sensation. For women, the chest may feel full or squeezing. Arm, back, neck or jaw pain is more common in women as is stomach pain. Women also may break into a nervous cold sweat and have extreme fatigue when experiencing a coronary attack. Sadly, these symptoms can be so mild and/or dismissed as something less serious that it may not be caught before a sudden attack. It is SO important to pay strong attention to your body and act upon symptoms that are out of the ordinary for you. Also, regular checkups along with healthy diet and exercise are key to prevention. I realize that most of this information is likely repeating what you have heard several times before but it can’t hurt to remind! Hope you are all enjoying this summer so far. It’s gonna be a hot one….wear your sunscreen!!

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Manners for Dog Dining Every year I write a dog deportment column. Yes, it needs to be said every year because I see dogs acting badly in public which is a HUGE reflection upon their owners! Your puppy has learned acceptable behavior from you and you alone! Don’t blame the pup. So here go the rules for including dogs in your dinner plans: 1. When dining, a dog should be in a down stay next to you or under the table. It is not appropriate for a dog to sit in a chair or ease on to the table. 2. Dogs should not bark! Constant dog barking is as irritating as children screaming at dinner. 3. Do not feed dogs from the table. Even if this is your habit at home, dogs in public should be on their best behavior. 4. Do not let your dog sniff other dogs around the waiting or eating area. If they lock eyes, you may find your and your dog in an aggressive situation. Who wants their dog to look like a bully? 5. ALWAYS ask if you can pet a dog. Never go up to a dog and start petting them. If the handler says no, do not be offended. 6. If your dog becomes unruly, take it away from the table for a timeout. People should not have to put up with an out-of-control dog. It is the owner’s responsibility to have their dog under control at all times. 7. Keep your dog on a leash when out in public. You should not leave the dog tethered to a post to return later. 8. Always pick up the waste your dog has made. You are responsible for any damage your dog causes. 9. If your dog fails at dining out, find a good training center and learn the art of controlling your dog and having them acceptable in public. 10. Call ahead to see if dogs are welcomed. Dogs are welcomed on outdoor Rivé Wood at the Broad Ripple Einstein Bros Bagels. patios. You don’t want to leave a dog tied up to a post and NEVER in a hot car if they are not allowed. Or, check out the Broad Ripple Gazette Directory section. If there is a paw next to the restaurant listing, you can take your dog to their patio. Remember service dogs (not therapy or comfort dogs) are the only canines allowed inside restaurants and most businesses. Train and practice your dogs to have good manners. They aim to please and their behavior is a direct reflection of what you will allow. Start by walks in the Village, then gradually work up to a drink on a patio, and then a long dinner. You and your canine will enjoy the summer evenings in Broad Ripple if you follow the 10 rules of dog dining! Doggy Bag, please? Random Ripplings A long-awaited repair was recently made to the curb cut on Guilford Avenue that provides access to the drive south of Mustard Hall. Trucks over the years had damaged the ramp and turned it into a muddy, crumbly mess. This new ramp will make the delivery of the Broad Ripple Gazette a bit easier!
