The annual Duck Race was held on the canal Sunday, June 26th. More than 1500 rubber ducks were poured off of the red Monon bridge into the Central Canal. The ducks floated west under the Rainbow Bridge at Guilford Avenue and on to the finish line at Flatwater Restaurant’s patio. Fire fighters set up a net across the canal to catch (most of) the ducks. Before the race, activities were set up on Rainbow Bridge which included face painting, a kiddie fishing pond, and the Colts Museum. At around 4:30pm the ducks were released. The first three ducks to the finish were thrown to shore and the winners were announced (below). 1st Place: Alex Ehrgott - Average Joe’s $100, Indy CD $50, Artifacts $50, brics $40, Target $50, Sno Zone $21, Runners Forum $25, 317 Burger $50, Dr. Eve Earley $100. 2nd Place: Melissa Lingenfelter - Average Joe’s $60, Indy CD $25, Artifacts $25, brics $20, Sno Zone $7. 3rd Place: Michael Phillips - Average Joe’s $40, Indy CD $25, Artifacts $25, brics $20, Sno Zone $7. phone or out of the office, with only one or two clients seen in office per week typically. The committee voted unanimously to support this petition. B. 6516 Westfield Blvd. regarding re-zoning 0.65 acres from C-S (FF) district to C-S classification to provide for MU-1& MU-2 uses, a hotel and event center with live entertainment. Petition #2016-ZON-031 Hearing continued to Thursday, July 14, 2016 before the Metropolitan Development Commission. This was the second presentation for Hotel Broad Ripple. Final details were worked out between the petitioner and the committee to exclude certain possible uses for the property. The current plans for hotel expansion and outdoor entertainment apply to 6620 (current hotel) and 6516, with future plans for the 6508 property. C. 6364, 6402, 6440 Westfield Blvd. Roger’s Pools site, regarding a re-zoning of 1.4 acres to C-S (FF) to provide for a mixed-use development with 136 dwelling units and C-3 retail and office uses and 163 garage parking spaces. Also, a variance to provide for a 75-foot tall building and five (5) additional requests as listed on the legal notice. Petition #2016-CZN-810 / 2016-CVR810 Hearing continued to Thursday, July 14, 2016 before the Metropolitan Development Commission. This was the 4th or 5th time before the committee for the Roger Pools site project. Many changes were made after meeting with the Land Use subcommittee formed to deal with this project specifically. Changes were made to the articulation of the facades designed to break up the large walls to relate better to the surroundings (see image). A meeting with Indy Parks also resulted in many changes, such as moving trees and structures further from the Monon Trail. The committee voted unanimously to support this petition with all of the new commitments. D. 6367 & 6371 Guilford Ave. regarding new plans for a mixed use development on these properties. This was the second appearance before the committee. Several refinements were shown. While the tandem parking plan (one car in front of another in one spot) is still in place, it has been altered so as to not share tandem spots between apartment and office units. The plan is for nine live/work units, 5 loft apartments, and 6400 sq. ft. of office space. The facades were reworked to include more grass at each unit entrance to relate to the neighborhood. No vote was taken as this proposal had not yet been filed with the City. The next public meeting of the committee is scheduled for July 26 at 6pm.

John Paul White with The Secret Sisters Saturday, July 9 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave 21+, doors 7 PM, show 8 PM, $15 advance, $17 door
What a great show this will be! John Paul White and The Secret Sisters are both from the same neck of the Alabama woods. John Paul White is tour in support of his newest album, Beulah. The record is named for a long-time family nickname, but all I can think of when I hear the name is my favorite childhood cat. The album doesn’t come out until August, but the song that was released on NPR is delightful. “The Martyr” is introspective and leans towards the rock genre. Album reviews are all great, saying the record covers a spectrum of rock, twang, and soul, highlighting John Paul’s amazing voice. You might recognize him as the male half of the now-defunct duo, Civil Wars. The Secret Sisters - Laura photo courtesy of www.johnpaulwhite.com and Lydia Rogers grew up immersed in the Muscle Shoals musical culture and are influenced by a wide range of music. They listened to everything from George Jones, Loretta Lynn, The Ramones, and Fleetwood Mac. Their father is a musician and introduced them to bluegrass at an early age, taking them to weekend bluegrass festivals. The result is an eclectic mix of musical styles and strong storytelling all surrounded by beautiful harmonies. Don’t forget about the great food at The Jazz Kitchen, order dinner and enjoy the music.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The #17 bus now runs from the Village more often for the inbound during morning commutes. It no longer has a different route for half the buses which used to use Kessler. The #18 bus now goes to Butler before heading downtown so you have two routes to choose from. Here’s an example for someone who works downtown and lives in the Village: 18 17 17 18 17 18

Garden/produce shop thrives despite surrounding changes Johnny’s Market on College Avenue now affronts the new Coil Apartment/ grocery store complex. I stopped by the other day to get some flowers for my courtyard garden and inquired about their future. “We’re staying,” said Mary Dueser of Johnny’s. In addition to flowers, they again are selling produce (much of it local) through mid-September. (I’m waiting for the Indiana Decker melons, a super sweet cantaloupe). Indeed, they expect the new 151 apartment complex to increase their business. Johnny’s will remain open as it always does through mid-September and then re-open to sell pumpkins and Christmas trees. BR is blessed to have two great locally owned garden stores (Weaver’s being the other one.) Shop local and don’t miss the Decker melons. Labor Day race moved to October Do you like participating in the Ripple Effect Run held in the late afternoon the Sunday before Labor Day? The race is being moved to October given that many people go away for the Labor Day holiday according to BRVA President Kent Springer. Bus routes feature better frequencies Did you hate waiting an hour for the next bus if you missed your bus? BR residents now don’t have to. Service is now three times an hour during rush hour.

The Wine Scene
Where in the "Village"?
Have you seen this? It is quite old and actually relates to the upcoming BR Carnival to celebrate Indiana’s Bicentennial. Where is it? What is it?
Answer on page 14
as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
Summer Sip-Seeing The summer art/music/theater season is in full swing. I’ve worked a few events and attended as many as I can, all the while keeping an eye out for the popular pours at each. An announcing gig at Symphony on the Prairie made me realize how popular and portable BOX WINE can be. Vin Vault, Big House, and Black Box are easy to find and each box equals 4 bottles, great for a group. If you’re packing a cooler, wine in a can is hard to beat especially if it’s Underwood, Barefoot, or Sofia. A trip to Irvington on the Third Thursday to enjoy Jazz at the Coal Yard Coffee Shop also included local craft beer from Black Acre. NO EXIT Performance of “The House of Blue Lights” was one of the most creative and compelling original plays ever staged in Indianapolis. So much so, that during the brief intermission, most in attendance were so caught up in discussing the costumes, dialogue, scenery and acting, we didn’t even get to the cash bar. I helped pour a late night “after party” in Carmel for the US Conference of Mayors. Being in the news biz, I recognized many of the mayors in attendance and being a purveyor of all things local, I had a great time describing the local beverages being offered. Indiana craft beer was the big winner that night. Mayors loved the hoppy Sun King Osiris, and easy drinking Cream Ale. Flat 12’s Half Cycle IPA got good reviews as did the wheat beers from Upland and Triton. If you’re looking for a tasting adventure at home, I suggest the crisp, dry Dry Creek Vineyards Chenin Blanc. It’s a snappy French grape that also grows well in Sonoma County. I love the soft aromas of almond and lanolin and clean mineral finish. It’s a great way to break out of the pinot grigio/chardonnay routine and a sassy glass to sip with vegan and vegetarian dishes. Jill A. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 3 in the right section of the top row which contains 6-7-8-9. The 3 in the upper left section eliminates the spaces to the left and right of the 7. The 3 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 6. The only place left is to the right of the 8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Dear readers, this is a repeat of an article I wrote from about two years ago. I wanted to share it again because, sadly, I haven’t been on vacation in a really long time, and I’m telling you, I can feel the effects! Hopefully some of you got some “away” time this past holiday weekend
Work, family, money, bills, health, etc. Some of many stresses in our lives that can pile up on us. There are many ways to relieve stress that I have mentioned before such as exercise, yoga, meditation, spending time with loved ones and so on. But what I personally feel is THE best way to relieve stress in one’s life is to temporarily escape it. In that I mean going on a vacation and doing activities you enjoy. I chose to write about this topic because I recently returned from an amazing trip to Park City, Utah. I had never visited the state before and it is absolutely gorgeous! My husband, sister and I had non-stop fun which included kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, a half marathon, and plenty of food and drink. While your idea, of “fun” may not be running 13.1 miles (which I totally get), I’m sure you have your own version of an ideal vacation. Unfortunately, when researching this topic I found some disappointing results in the vacationing of America, especially when compared to the other developed countries of the world. In fact the U.S. stands ALONE as the only one that doesn’t mandate that employers provide some type of paid time off. Meaning it is up to the company to decide if and how much vacation to allot to its employees; this is also true for holidays. Which of course means that we are taking less vacations than most other countries; especially European ones who average 30-40 vacation days a year (how nice would that be?!). To boot, not only are we not getting out of our “daily grind” enough, it can also affect our overall health. Here are some interesting statistics: • Those who do not take regular vacations are up to three times more likely to be depressed than their vacationing counterparts. • A heart study found that men who take regular vacations are 32 percent less likely to die of heart attacks, and 21 percent less likely to die early. And women who go on vacation have a 50 percent lower risk of heart attack. • Carving out time off keeps you balanced and less likely to become ill. Stress depresses your immune system and has been shown to increase your odds of suffering from adrenal dysfunction, headaches, and several other sicknesses. • You likely age more slowly by getting away. Not taking a break can elevate the amount of the stress hormone cortisol in your body which may actually speed up the aging process.

Where in the Village? puzzle on Page 9
Several studies show that not taking vacations actually harms employee productivity. So, it is a double edged sword: No fun, less production! All work…no play… Of course you probably don’t need convincing that vacations are good for you. And many of us don’t have a couple of grand to slap down a few times a year. But even taking a couple of days to hit Bloomington, or renting a cabin, visiting an out of town friend or simply just staying at home and getting extra sleep and catching some movies is better than nothing. I love what I do, and I hope you do too but it doesn’t mean we all don’t need a break every now and then. And taking three days off to fly to a city and run a marathon (while very accomplishing) is hardly relaxing. Go explore, relax, rejuvenate and hit your “RESET” button.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Cruising Down The River Step off dry land and see Broad Ripple and the area from a different perspective. Last year I was invited by my son, an avid outdoorsman, to canoe the White River (the one that runs through Broad Ripple). We began the journey in Noblesville with us in a canoe and my granddaughter in her birthday kayak! It was to be a grand adventure so we packed life vests, drinks, snacks, and phones in waterproof bags. His wife dropped us off and was picking us up. Little did I know that about 4 hours later (or more since this was a year ago), we paddled to 116th street. The river was not quite like the Mississippi as Mark Twain described it. There were no villages along the way, no riverboats, nor any scallywags or pirates. Instead that section of the White River is calm and serene. Going with the river current, paddling in the canoe was not arduous, but about two hours into the trip, my thirteen-year-old started the “When are we going to get there?”, “This isn’t that much fun”, “I want in the canoe instead of paddling alone.” All the time I was enjoying watching the banks to see what we could see. That day was hot. The turtles were sunning on the floated and snagged logs. We saw a few fishermen and asked each time, “Have you caught anything good?” There was not a lot of wildlife because we were traveling near high noon. Most nocturnal or early critters are napping. We saw the sycamores and massive roots bulging up from the water’s edge. Birds including cardinals, sparrows, swifts were abundant. I was hoping to see an eagle or an osprey, but that would have to wait for another trip. So this year, I was invited to canoe from 116th to 62nd street (Broad Ripple Park ramp). This was a beautiful late May day. The water was not too high having settled down after the spring rains. We brought our lunch, drinks, sun screen, and glasses. We didn’t know the exact hours it would take for this trip so we allowed the entire afternoon. After a quick start, my son and I settled into a relaxed pace— he at the rudder position and me at the front. This trip was delightful. The water was moving, but not fast. The sky was clear and everything was blooming. Again we saw the sycamore trees, trees that had fallen this year, and trees that were being worn away. My son luckily is a good navigator and read the ripples and current so that we only scraped bottom once. This trip we saw egrets, baby ducks and geese, a king fisher, photo by Brandt Carter crows, and large nests that we could not identify. The turtles slid off the branches and rocks as we passed them. It was fun marking our progress with the bridges we canoed under. I did remark that it would be interesting if the DNR posted signs on small creeks that were flowing into the river. We stopped for lunch on narrow islet in the middle of the river. Then onward we navigated to the area just behind Keystone at the Crossing. This is where the trip became livelier. We passed people on the sandy bank enjoying the water. Luckily my son knows the river and guided us north, then a bit west to turn south. I would have been at a loss to find my way. Great to have a good guide. Under the 75th street bridge, civilization came to us. The pontoons, kayaks, motor boats and one jet skier, that delighted in creating the biggest wake, disturbed our languid canoe trip. We did see the White River paddle boat and another see-through pontoon designed with a bar. Looking at the cottages and houses kept our minds off the continuous, now long-time paddling. I realized White River Yacht Club looks very different from river than from land. It is more imposing and is decked with patio tables, umbrellas, and boats at its docks. (You know they have Music on the River in the summer on Thursday nights and are open to the public on those nights. Call to check out their every other Thursday event and the Annual Open House Festival, August 20th, also open to the public.) Finally we started seeing the bend in the White River when it makes the curve to go around the Village. Broad Ripple Park also has a nice observation deck on the north side where you can spend time watching the water activities. We slowed our paddling so we didn’t land so hard at the boat ramp. 2 1/2 hours. We made

I would encourage everyone to try a canoe, paddle boat, pontoon ride, or kayak. You can get a different view of the village.
