melissa@broadripplegazette.com Congratulations to Monica Hardy and Marley Alexander for earning for earning salutatorian and valedictorian of the 2016 class of Broad Ripple High School! Monica was born and raised here in Broad Ripple. In fact, she’s lived in the same house since she was just two years old. “When I was young I liked to color, play games, have tea parties and go on picnics in the park. My parents always made sure that my siblings and I were close. I have an older sister named Jasmine, older brother named Courtney, and a twin sister named Monique.” Hardy explained. She also picked up music from a young age. “We went to church regularly and were always in music lessons. Practicing was never fun but I’m glad I was able to take music lessons and now I actually play my electric bass every Sunday at church.” Monica contributes her scholarly success to her family, noting they provided lots of support and inspiration by doing well in school. “I had a lot of help along the way from my family. They were always so supportive whether that meant coming to games, performances, or helping me prepare for class presentations.” Marley Alexander is also an Indianapolis native, however, her story is a little more complicated. “I was born in Indianapolis, although I moved to Topeka, Kansas as a baby. We lived there until I was six, then moved back to Indiana. Between first and third grade, we moved several times and I switched schools each year.” She said.

Random Ripplings

The 2016 Indianapolis Fire Department recruits met at Station 32 on July 7th for training and to spruce up the station by landscaping, cleaning and painting.

A few months ago I sat down with Dennis Boone and Tim Micheli for an interview about a piece of Broad Ripple history. We met at Connor’s Pub, 6331 Ferguson Street [E4 on map], as that is where this heavy piece of Broad Ripple’s past is now on display. A little history to set the scene... In 1895, yes, 121 years ago, a wrought iron bridge was built to span the mighty White River at Broad Ripple. The bridge extended Jefferson Street (Westfield Boulevard today) in Broad Ripple to Range Line Gravel Road across the river. The bridge was nearly east-west in orientation, with dangerous curves on both sides approaching (The new bridge is about halfway between east-west and north-south). Range Line Road has had a variety of names, including State Road 1, US 31, State Road 431 and the current name, Westfield Boulevard. In 1977 the bridge was closed to traffic, likely due to the crumbing condition of the then 82-year-old structure. In 1977 and 1978 a concrete bridge was constructed and Westfield Boulevard was straightened out for safety. I made several trips to the site with my friend and BRHS classmate David Dawson to document the demolition of the old bridge and the construction of the new one. Little did we know that much a older group of Broad Ripplians (in their midtwenties!) were plotting around the same time to save a piece of history. Now for the interview. When the bridge was closed to traffic for its eventual destruction and replacement, Dennis Boone, Tim Micheli, John Chattin, and Jack Clark decided to save the large iron plaque from the top of it. Dennis lived in an apartment on the second floor above a business in a house on Westfield Boulevard, just a block or so from the bridge. This business was Paymaster, and the house is now the northernmost part of Hotel Broad Ripple. “I thought the sign might end up being sold for scrap along with the rest of the bridge,” said Dennis Boone. “I was thinking somebody should get it to preserve it.” Dennis and his friend made a few trips to the bridge to scope out the effort required. Dennis climbed up the iron structure to the top to see how the sign was held in place. “I realized it wasn’t hung in there very well. It had a couple of iron lips that went down between two girders. It had bolts that held it in place...at one time. When I crawled up and looked at it, I noticed that both bolts had rusted out and were completely gone. There were just two holes where they used to be, so I thought this thing is probably not too hard to pry it out of here.” One night, with a hefty hank of rope from their friend The crew with their prize. Jane, the foursome headed for the bridge. The details are a bit sketchy almost 40 years later, but as Dennis and Tim recalled, it was Dennis and Clark that climbed to the top with a pry bar and the

“I lived in Greenfield when I began my freshman year at Broad Ripple. My junior year, I moved to Anderson, but I continued my high school career at Broad Ripple.” Although she lived 45 minutes away from Broad Ripple High school, she commuted everyday. “I could not bring myself to leave Broad Ripple. I chose BR for its learning environment and dance program, and I cannot imagine having to leave that.” Monica and Marley have very different interests, but they were both extremely involved with the BR high school community. Monica explained, “My favorite class was Biology, meaning the study of life, because life/nature has always been very interesting to me. Also, I was involved in a lot of extracurricular activities like Student Government, National Honors Society, Rocket Mentoring, Cheerleading, Tennis, Cross Country, and Softball.” Marley has also been involved with countless extracurriculars, with her main specialty being dance. “I participated in Student Council as the Junior Class Vice President and Senior Class President, National Honor Society as the Secretary my junior year and President my senior year, a Model United Nations team that made a yearly trip to Boston, Massachusetts serving as Captain my senior year, Brain Game serving as Captain my senior year, Rocket Mentoring, Humanities Advisory Council, Prom Committee, and community service outreach,” Marley said. “I have been dancing since I was three years old. Ballet is by far my favorite, although I take several forms of dance classes. I was highly involved in dance classes in and out of school, including teaching a ballet class.” These two hard working individuals can all take the credit for their accomplishments, although they had lots of help and support along the way “I had a lot of help along the way from my family. They were always so supportive whether that meant coming to games, performances, or helping me prepare for class presentations.” Monica said. “I certainly had a lot of help along the way from many people, including my classmates, teachers, and parents. Two teachers that were especially impactful were Joshua Pierson and Lou DeBruicker; they were always there to support me no matter what I needed, from study tips to encouragement.” Explained Marly. In the fall, Monica is going to University of Indianapolis for Art Education while also taking Pre-Vet course requirements. Marley is going to Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky to study Exercise Science and Pre-Physical Therapy, with a goal to go onto a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. These girls have surely been great role models to the Broad Ripple community, and we wish them luck as they further their education. “I have always been inspired by education itself,” Marley explained. “I know that may sound a little silly, but I have always strove to learn as much as I can -- just to learn. Education cannot be taken away from you; your own mind is the only thing you have full jurisdiction over in this world. In that way of thought, education has always been of utmost importance to me, to have the opportunity to be Valedictorian of Broad Ripple High School has been a very rewarding experience in my educational goals.”

Can you believe that it is almost Indiana State Fair time? My intention is to attend all 17 days of the Fair again. I’m giving you the rundown on insider tips and the headlining concerts early so you’ll have plenty of time to plan. I’ll see you there!

Indiana State Fair August 5 – 21 Indiana State Fairgrounds 1202 E. 38th Street - all-ages, $12 at the gate (several presale promotions available) + $5 parking

I am an Indiana State Fair geek – I’ve attended every single day of the Fair for years. Here are a few of the things I’ve learned along the way. Admission: There are tons of deals to be had. There will be a coupon in the Monday, August 8th Indianapolis Star for free admission on Wednesday, August 10. For Meijer Family Day on Monday, August 15 gate admission is only $20 for up to 10 people. There are also discounts for bringing Pepsi product cans, AAA member’s day, college students, military personnel and families, and much more. Check out indianastatefair.com for more information. Parking: It is $5.00 to park in Fairgrounds and around the Fairgrounds. If I’m driving, I find it easiest to park at the Indiana School for the Deaf at 52nd Street and the Monon Trail. The charge is the same, and it is an easy walk across the street. There is also handicapped parking there and you don’t have to go down and up the steps under the track. I find it easier to exit also, be prepared, everyone has to exit onto 46th Street, but there you get to see all of the trailers and fun stuff of the folks that are working at the Fair. Free State Fair Park & Ride: When you park at Glendale Mall’s Rural Street lot, you can ride to the Indiana State Fair on the free shuttle. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes from 10 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. each day of the fair. Walking: The Monon Trail leads right to the Fairgrounds. You can hop off at 42nd or 38th Street and there is a gate between the two that leads into the Midway. Pedal & Park: The secured bicycle parking is right on the trail, north of 38th Street. And you receive a coupon for $1 off of your admission. Be mindful that you need to retrieve your bike by 8:00 PM. IndyGo: Routes 4 and 39 stop are just steps away from the main entrance on 38th Street. Fare is $1.75 per ride or $4 for an all-day pass. Youth 18 and under and people 65 and older are eligible for reduced fare with proper ID. Plan your public transit trip to the Fair at IndyGo.net Once you’re there: The Tractor Shuttle is my favorite way to get around. It is a great way to see the Fairgrounds and meet people. Winners Chosen for 2016 Indiana Authors Award

Six writers with Indiana ties have been named winners or finalists of the 2016 Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award, including a first-ever winner in the category of Genre Excellence. I haven’t lived there since I was eleven years old, but in my heart I’ve always been a Hoosier,” said Fowler. “I’m thrilled and I’m grateful, and when I come to Indiana for the award dinner in October, I’ll be coming home.” Danville native Philip Gulley has been named the Regional Author winner, earning him a $7,500 prize. Gulley, a Quaker pastor, writer and speaker, has published 20 books, including the acclaimed “Harmony” series. Children’s picture book author and South Bend resident April Pulley Sayre is the winner of the first-ever Genre Excellence Award, earning her a $6,000 cash prize. She is best known for her lyrical, read-aloud science books, including Raindrops Roll, an ALA Notable/NCTE Orbis Pictus Honor book. Emerging Author Award finalists include Sarah Gerkensmeyer (Greencastle), Bill Kenley (Noblesville) and Edward Kelsey Moore (Indianapolis). All winners and finalists will be honored at the eighth annual Indiana Authors Award Dinner on Saturday, October 29 at Central Library in Indianapolis. In addition to their cash awards, winners will designate individual $2,500 grants to the public libraries of their choosing. A nine-member, statewide Award Panel selected the winners and finalists from a pool of publicly nominated authors that increases each year. The annual award program recognizes Indiana authors’ contributions to the literary landscape in Indiana and across the nation. The Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award is a program of The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation and is funded through the generosity of The Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation. The Indy Folk Fest brings the neighborhood together again on August 13 from noon to 11 p.m. at the Indy Hostel. First Congregational Church will host the Matisse Jazz Project as part of the New Creation worship service on Sunday, July 24, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Matisse Jazz Project presents musical interpretations of the “scissor-cut” artwork of Henri Matisse titled “Jazz.” He referred to this technique as painting with scissors and the cut-outs were a product of his spiritual rebirth after rejecting faith as a young man. The musicians include Christopher Bakriges, composer, on keyboad and Stanley Chepaitis on violin and bass. Both musicians have performed throughout the nited States, as well as, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Slovenia, Pakistan, Turkey, India, Croatia and other countries. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

BR CONGRESSWOMAN NOT SEEKING RE-ELECTION On July 15, U.S. Representative Susan Brooks – who represents Broad Ripple and points north – dropped out of the race for re-election so she could run for Governor as did U.S. Representative Todd Rokita and Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb. The Republican Party has 30 days to choose a new candidate. This means we will have a new Congressional representative representing Broad Ripple. NO STATE FAIR TRAIN THIS YEAR? Sources report the State Fair Train between Noblesville and the State Fair may not operate this year. However, Craig Presler, Secretary of the Indiana Transportation Museum (which operates the train), in an interview with the Broad Ripple Gazette said that volunteers are working on getting the equipment ready in time for the State Fair. However, they are awaiting word from the Federal Railroad Administration for approval. The FRA apparently has an issue whether the train is a tourist train or a short-haul/commuter train. Presler noted the Fair Train has been operating since 1983. The Fair Train only operates 17 days per year. In another interview with the Gazette, Leslie Gordon of the Indiana State Fair said they do not run the Train but had the following statement: “The Indiana Transportation Museum’s Fair Train has been a great contributor to the Indiana State Fair and our fairgoers for many years. We hope that any issues that have arisen will be resolved in time for the Fair but there are several other convenient transportation options in place for our visitors to attend this year’s Indiana State Fair: Glendale Park and Ride, a free shuttle service from Glendale Town Center every day of the Fair, Bike to the Indiana State Fair via the Monon Trail and save $1 on admission with Pedal and Park, IndyGo Transit stops at the Fairgrounds’ main entrance on 38th Street, and plenty of on-site parking. In light of this potential change we encourage fairgoers to use our new mobile app to plan their trip in advance and come early to beat the crowds and stay all day to make sure they experience everything the Fair has to offer this year!” STATE FAIR OPENS AUGUST 5 It’s State Fair Time again. The Fair opens August 5 with a hot air balloon launch in the morning and a night time balloon parade. LAST CALL FOR THE BROAD RIPPLE POOL Swimmers and pool users at the Broad Ripple Park Pool found a “Closed” sign at the door recently. On July 12 and 13, the pool closed for “maintenance issues”. This is on top of the closure of the pool on Sundays due to the “lifeguard shortage”. Not to mention the complete closure of the pool for the season on August 7. Thanks to Phil Trbovic and his staff at the pool for the great job they did this year despite the many challenges. You will be missed. Winners will be announced in time for the 2016 Indiana State Fair. Easley Winery was the big winner last year as its Indiana grown Traminette took top honors. An internationally known white wine worth finding is the Hugel et Fils “Gentil” from Alsace. It’s a blend of grapes that creates a crisp, dry wine with notes of green apple, lime and a long clean finish. rope. John and Tim stayed below. “Jack was working on the north side of the sign with a crowbar,” recalled Dennis, “but we couldn’t budge it because of all the rust. I had decided to bring a little two-ounce aerosol WD-40 in my pocket. I hung on one of the beams, leaned over and shot the WD-40 up under and into the crack between the girders. Then we heard Booiiinnnng and the thing came out!” Dennis and Jack put the 2” diameter rope around the sign, looped it around the girders and lowered the 1895 plaque to the ground. “My buddy John grabbed it like a wild man and carried it all the way back up to the apartment!” The sign has been safe at Dennis’ house all of these years. Recently he decided it should be out where people that remember the old bridge could see it. He asked John Yaggi at Connor’s Pub if it could be installed there. His friend Hal cut off the broken lip and installed brackets to the sides of the iron sign. Then he securely mounted it on a ceiling joist at the local pub. Thanks to the rescuing work of these four we now have a very old piece of history on display. Stop in at Connor’s, have a beer and check out the sign. Just look up and behind you from the far left end of the bar.

St. Paul’s to Legion Hall After the 10:00 mass on Sunday, July 10, the people of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church returned to the American Legion building on College and 64th. 150 years ago, while their new church was being built, they gathered in the Legion building for Mass every Sunday. To celebrate, they took a trolley to the Legion for fellowship, refreshments, and a program about the building’s history. “If it weren’t for the legion building, St. Paul’s may not be what it is today.”

Random Ripplings When the new Broad Ripple Traffic Plan test went into effect, the one-way stop sign at Paxton Place and Guilford Avenue was changed to a three-way stop. Be careful here, I have seen many people fly right through on Guilford.

When the floor was recently taken up (during the asbestos abatement) at American Legion Broad Ripple Post #3, 6379 College Avenue [E3 on map], the concrete floor underneath was exposed. The Gazette was called in for a peek. There were cracks in that floor indicating where the original work pit was when the building served as a sub-station for the interurban train system. The interurban train cars would pull into the building from the south and workers could service the cars from the floor pit.

Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple

Having been in the fitness industry for about 15 years now, I have had the pleasure of meeting so many people in every arena of exercise. You name it, from bodybuilding to acro-yoga to ultramarathons and everything in between; I have encountered dozens, if not hundreds, of people that are incredibly passionate about what they do to be physically active. But the question I want to explore is this: can excessive exercise be TOO much of a good thing? Is there a bell-shaped curve scenario where once the “optimal” level for a person is attained, that going over could actually be negative? I am going to make a case for both sides and you can decide which one you would like to take. PRO: I have met a handful of people who have actually battled addiction with exercise. Addictive personalities often cannot be changed; essentially they wouldn’t give up being extreme but rather “transfer” the addictive behaviors to something else. So, when you meet an avid marathoner, or triathlete, etc. that may tell you that they are sober, it is likely that their exercise program had a significant part in helping his/her recovery. The human brain experiences a chemical reward when we exercise. Evidence has shown that this can be used as an alternative reward for those battling addiction, which can make staying clean easier. I have seen multiple articles in Runner’s World magazine about people who came back from literally rock bottom thanks to physical activity. But it’s not just people with substance abuse that benefit from the rewards. Anyone who regularly works out will likely benefit from improved mood, feelings of accomplishment, decreased anxiety and stress along with many others. And what is “excessive” for one may not be for another. I say, if you need to do some form of exercise every day to squelch the stress of work, money, family or whatever, I say go for it…as long as you are not injuring your body. Having fitness as a slight crutch (for lack of a better word) isn’t necessarily a bad thing as long as it is only improving your life and not the opposite. This leads me to my next point… CON: Just as I have seen and heard cases in which exercise can literally save one’s life, it can also play a role in potentially destroying it. There is a fine line between exercise becoming an aid, to a true dependency and, to the extreme, a compulsion. If taken to such an extreme it can create physical, social and psychological havoc. Conversely, a healthy athlete and an exercise addict may share similar levels of training volume—the difference is attitude. I have witnessed marriages crumble and friendships dis-band (or friendships that form with only workout buddies) due to the addiction. And I can easily see how it can happen. While many of my clients tease me that I am an “obsessed runner” I assure you that I pretty much never skip a night out or an event with my friends and family to go for a run. If I know there is something planned in my life, I wouldn’t skip it to go for a run; but I wouldn’t likely skip my run either. I would most likely get it in either before or after. It is truly a delicate balance however, and I will be the first to admit that my mood is definitely different on days that I don’t get outside and get my runner’s euphoria. So, DOES that make me an exercise addict or just really dedicated to a sport that I truly enjoy? If I am not injured and constantly exhausted, I feel that it is the latter. You can decide what you think…

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Is there Money in your Backyard? I remember going to lake in the summer. We passed several farms on the way. I was fascinated with the signs country folk had in their yards like Fresh Eggs, Tomatoes, Flowers, and Baked Goods. It seems like the housewives in those days liked to sell a bit of something to have extra money. I soon found out the ladies called it their egg money, and they could spend it without regards to the family budget. So if the farms can produce extra money, what about your own yard? Although housing covenants or city ordinances may thwart a money-making idea, I think there are some things you can explore. I do think you can be creative and make a little extra by exploring what your yard could contribute. 1. The easiest and most common extra income is holding a garage or yard sale. Reselling your “stuff” lightens your load and creates a bit of cash. 2. If you have plants like perennials or hostas, divide them, and offer them for sale. It is helpful if you know the botanical names, but it is not critical. People can see them in your yard. This can also work for seeds in the fall. One neighbor sold the platter hibiscus seeds every year because people saw them growing in the yard and wanted them too. 3. We have an abundance of red bud and gingko saplings in addition to burning bushes. Our hearty starts are from our garden, and we know they grow well in our area. Pot them up and price them. 4. The kids can have a lemonade stand, always a favorite. This helps them understand marketing and business. Check out www.lemonadeday.org. 5. You can also plant just a bit more in your garden and sell the excess. Vegetables are always welcomed, especially when people know you have grown them. Kids can help too. Don’t forget any cherries, peaches, or apples you may grow. You can charge for the picked fruit or you can let people pick their own. What about pumpkins, gourds, and Indian corn in the garden for a cash crop. 6. Don’t forget herbs planted in your garden. Check with small restaurants to see if they would like herbs like basil and mint. You may find you can supply them. You can also include edible flowers. 7. Let a dog stay with you. Especially if you have a fenced-in backyard, many people would rather have a dog in a home than a kennel. 8. Rent out a shed or extra garage. 9. If you have any kind of a studio (ceramic, woodworking, etc.), rent your space for a craft person. They may not have a kiln or a specific saw that they only need for a short time. 10. If you have a trailer parked out back, you may want to charge a small fee for people to use it. They will have to have a compatible hitch. 11. Add a chicken coop, sell the eggs and then you will be able to get real egg money! 12. Put on a play. That was one of our big summer money makers. We charged a quarter and sold treats during the performance. Although we never got rich, we learned to sell tickets, count money, put on a theatrical event, and clean up. 13. Have a fairy garden party. You can get the plants and charge for the workshop. Provide the soil, plants and décor for children and adults. No one is too old to tend a fairy garden. I ask the kids to bring their own containers. 14. If you have a lot of night crawlers, how about sharing some of your worms. As kids we loved to find them and put them in a dish filled with dirt. 15. Start a bee hive. You need to plan to do this in the spring. It is amazing to have honey from different locations around Marion County. There are restrictions on selling honey so check that part out. Last year, I purchased Rocky Ripple Honey at their art fair. Yum! 16. If you are artistic or a craftsperson, bird houses, lawn ornaments, garden décor, and flags can be created and sold. I found that it just takes a bit of ingenuity and entrepreneurship to generate a bit of egg money! All you have to do is make something someone else wants. Good luck. Egads! Wynkin, Blynkin and Nod are gone from the Glendale Library entrance! The three penguins have been at the Glendale Mall even when it was on open-air mall back in the 1960s. As of press time, Kite Realty had not responded to my inquiry about the disappearance. The Gazette has heard that the Arthur Kraft penguin sculptures are being relocated to the Indianapolis Zoo. We will let you know more as soon as we find out.

First Saturday Cleanups

Historic Home Tour

5th Friday Art Popup Art Events

In the early 1900’s Broad Ripple Park was home to a premier amusement park. It was pretty amazing; it had a zoo, roller coasters, log ride, bumper cars, beach - in fact, the carousel at the Children’s Museum is the carousel from the amusement park. Broad Ripple will resurrect the amusement park atmosphere, on a smaller scale, for a long weekend in August to celebrate the neighborhood’s history and the Indiana Bicentennial. Join us August 11 through 14 in Broad Ripple Park for a four-day festival featuring carnival rides and games, food and drink, a craft beer garden, live entertainment and community booths. A history exhibit provided by Broad Ripple Gazette will be on display and Sunday will feature an artisan and vintage market. BR Farmers Market Kicks the Plastic Habit
