Indiana State Fair 2016 The Fair runs through August 21. We still plan to see Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band on the Free Stage Saturday evening, August 20. And, one more corn dog! See Fair entries from our readers on page 11. All the pictures are at www. broadripplegazette.com

Broad Ripple Carnival at Broad Ripple Park Despite the rains, thousands turned out for the Broad Ripple Carnival held to celebrate Indiana’s Bicentennial. The carnival recreated the era when rides filled the park during the first 40 years of the 20th century. The four-day event was filled with activities. For an actual look back at the old Broad Ripple park amusement park, the Gazette helped the Broad Ripple Village Association set up a temporary park history museum at the carnival (see photo below). We hope the BRVA will consider making the Broad Ripple Carnival a regular event!

Random Ripplings After a year of planning and fundraising organized by Michael Thierwechter, the classic Red Key Tavern neon sign has been updated. The new sign is made of aluminum to last for years. All of the neon was duplicated. The sign body was artistically painted to exactly match the original weather-beaten sign, complete with “missing paint” and “rust streaks” (see left). A sign lighting celebration was held on the sidewalk at the 52nd and College tavern on August 12 at 9pm. Right: adding the final neon elements to the new sign. Mickey Levy, owner of Sign Services (many may remember him as “Mickey The Beeper King”), was on-site during the installation to make sure it went smoothly.

Pints For Half-Pints gears up for 5th ann. fundraising event

The Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club (BRKC) is gearing up to celebrate its fifth annual fundraising event, Pints for Half-Pints, this fall. All funds raised help support science, technology, engineering, art and math education (STEAM) in Midtown IPS Schools. BRKC, along with its sponsors and nine local breweries, will host the event on October 7, 2016. Last year’s event raised over $15,000. Proceeds helped fund science fair and art supplies, academic planners, literature, and an after-school STEM tutor at School 55; a robotics sponsorship, wobble chairs, and logic materials at School 91; circuit kits, farming project supplies, wobble chairs, and Post-it materials at Sidener Academy; puppetry and film equipment at Broad Ripple Magnet High School; and laptops for Coder Dojo, Camp Invention scholarships, a music camp, and Girls First Lego League sponsorship for students from multiple Midtown schools. “We’re thrilled to celebrate our fifth year of raising STEAM funds for our Midtown schools. We continue to be amazed by the way our community comes together to help us grow this event. We set our fundraising goal a bit higher each year and always exceed it thanks to our generous sponsors, breweries and attendees.” said Marianne Beck, Committee Chair. The event will include craft beer from Bier Brewery, Big Lug Canteen, Broad Ripple Brewpub, Brugge Brasserie, Indiana City Brewing Co., Mashcraft Brewing Company, Metazoa Brewing Co., Outliers Brewing Company, and Thr3e Wisemen Brewery. A new addition this year will be wine donated by 21st Amendment Inc. Food trucks will be onsite and Indianapolis band Straight Up Chumps will provide live entertainment throughout the evening. The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at The Speak Easy, located at 5255 N. Winthrop Avenue in Indianapolis. Admission is $25.00 per person and includes a souvenir pint glass (while supplies last) plus one drink ticket. Discounted tickets are available until 9/30/16. Food and additional drink tickets will be sold separately at the event. This event is for ages 21 and over. Established in October 1987, the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of children in the Broad Ripple community. 100% of all proceeds raised goes back into the community. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.pfhp.org.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Fresh New Plants Arriving Throughout the Season

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)

Bicentennial Festival Fun What part of the Broad Ripple Gazette History Exhibit did you enjoy the most? The maps? The pictures? How about that poster from 1986 showing the businesses of the day. What a fun food and wine flashback for me to the glory days of the village when the ducks outnumbered the geese on the canal. I was a senior at Butler that year. The rustic charm and French Onion soup at Renee’s Restaurant, rye bagels at Fox’s deli and carrot cake from Cafe Espresso were all occasional treats. And I can still taste the fruity, tart, potent “Sangria” that the late Larry Rangel, who owned El Matador, would custom make for me and my fellow KKG sorority sisters whenever we had a girls night out at his restaurant.

Indiana Wine Winners

Results from the 2016 Indy International Wine Competition are in. Over 2000 entries were judged the first week of August at Purdue University. Dr. Richard Vine, Professor Emeritus in Food Science at Purdue, created the event in 1991 when in addition to teaching courses, he was wine consultant for American Airlines. Dr. Vine created a world class commercial wine competition that today, under the guidance of Purdue Enology Professor Dr. Christian Butzke has evolved into more of a scientific wine tasting competition. This years big winners can be found in local grocery and wine stores. And those from Indiana and nearby states are worth a drive to the winery to enjoy the full wine experience. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 1 in the left section of the bottom row which contains 4-5-6-8-9. The 1 in the lower right section eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 6. The 1 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space above the 9. The only place left is directly above the 5. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Bring Farming Into Our Yards The Indiana State Fair helps us get in touch with the farmers of Indiana. If we had lived 150 years ago, most of us would have probably lived and worked on a farm. Big families, seasonal produce, and farming the land would have been our focus. Fast forward, check out a current infographic about today’s Indiana agriculture. What’s interesting from the graphic by IN.gov is the amount of land devoted to farming today − 83%. This includes crops such as soy beans, corn, mint, livestock and trees. It easy for city folk to think the world just revolves around buildings, restaurants, bars, and retail. Not in this state! Broad Ripple is a good resource for our residences to enjoy “urban farming”…from produce to supplies. Visit Weaver’s, Habig’s or Sullivan’s Garden Center for any plant, shrub, or tree you would like for you garden or backyard. From veggies to fruit trees, you will find advice and plant material perfect for fall or spring planting. Check out Johnny’s stand on College for fresh produce right from the farm. Visit the vegetable garden at Public Greens where you can see how the plants grow and appreciate the “easement” to table grown by the restaurant. If you are keeping chicken or ducks, visit Backyard Birds or Agrarian on 54th street. You don’t have to go out to the country to get feed. Agrarian also offers classes such as bee keeping for urban farmers. If you haven’t turned part of your yard into a garden yet, tour the village and see what might work in your yard. Last week I fixed dinner…a cabbage from my garden turned into oriental slaw, a tomato wedge was just a pop of color, and the cucumber sliced paper thin with onions also from my garden were pickled in brine. Yum! There is nothing like a summer meal from your yard. And yes, the flowers on the table were from my yard, too. Let’s celebrate all that grows and in so doing, we celebrate the farms of Indiana. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Visit her web site www.feedbackyardbirds.com. Email your bird questions to Brandt@BroadRippleGazette.com
