Carl Storie Band at White River Yacht Club Rosie Stockdale: Mayor’s Neighborhood Advocate By Melissa Kidulas
We have a new mayor’s advocate in town! I figured the best way to get her information to readers, would be to let her explain it herself. Here’s a little “Q and A” with our new mayor’s advocate, Rosie Stockdale.
Carl Storie singing his Faith Band hit Dancin’ Shoes at the annual White River Yacht Club Open House, held on August 20.
Q: First off, give a little information about who you are and some history about yourself. A: I’m Rosie Stockdale, a lifelong resident of the near eastside of Indianapolis. I am the mother of two, and a grandmother of two. I went to St. Philip Neri School for elementary school and graduated from Scecina Memorial High School. Q: Political/professional background? A: I worked in a bank and then was a stay-at-home mom for several years. After I returned to work I worked three years in the Marion County Clerk’s Office where I issued marriage licenses. I have always been an advocate in my spare time, serving on several boards in my neighborhood and my children’s school. Q: What exactly does a mayor’s advocate do? A: Mayor’s Neighborhood Advocates serve as a bridge to city services, neighborhood-based groups, and businesses seeking to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. We work to provide residents in our neighborhoods answers to their questions and a person to share their concerns. Mayor Hogsett’s Neighborhood Advocates want to work with you to improve your neighborhood and make Indy an even better place to live and work. Q: What are some of your plans for neighborhood/community development? A: I come into this position without any specific projects for the neighborhood. My plan is to listen to what the neighborhood goals and dreams are and help move goals into accomplishments and dreams into reality.
ArtSparkle at the Indianapolis Art Center The theme of the 2016 ArtSparkle, the annual fund raiser for the IAC, was Art Through The Looking Glass. Food was provided by restaurants such as Sangiovese Ristorante, The Northside Social and Sun King. Toy Factory performed as the Alices and the Mad Hatters danced. Above: Costumed attendees sat at Alice-themed tables while the Caterpillar (upper right) and the Cheshire Cat (center) looked on. Below: Valorie Flaherty, Patrick Flaherty (Indianapolis Art Center President & Executive Director), and Stan Hurt all in full costume for the event.
Q: Some of your goals while in this position? A: My main goals to help resident’s and neighborhood group have their voices heard. I want to become a full partner in my neighborhoods. I am ready to help with any goals the neighborhood has for itself. My main goal is to be open minded and neutral until I develop those relationships and not try to impose my ideas in existing plans. Q: How can people get contact you? A: The best way to reach me is by e-mail at rosemary.stockdale@indy.gov or my cell at (317) 833-4938. I often return phone calls in the evening, so if you leave a message, please leave the latest time you would like to receive a return call.

On Thursday, August 18, the City of Rushville, the Indiana Stellar Communities designee for the Division I, joined the other finalists, former Stellar Communities winners, representatives from each of the state partner agencies, and Lt. Governor Eric Holcomb for the formal announcement at a Stellarbration at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. To continue the Stellarbration, those involved in the Stellar presentation from Rushville headed to Plump’s Last Shot, 6416 Cornell Avenue [D5 on map], for lunch and a few adult beverages. The location was selected based upon the inspiration of the man himself: “for all of the small cities who never had a chance.” Bobby Plump joined the crew for the celebration.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Take the long way home? New #18 bus route to downtown diverts to Butler
RO

I tried the new route for Route 18Nora which goes from Broad Ripple to downtown. The route was recently changed from going Washington/Pennsylvania/ Meridian to downtown to go via Butler University. I found the side trip to Butler annoying going downtown since it added an extra 15-20 minutes to the trip and no one got on or off at Butler University. Worse, on the way home at rush hour, the bus was a half hour late and so the 40 minute trip took well over an hour. Since I can drive the trip in 20 minutes (and since I live a half mile from the bus stop at 67th/College which involves a 20 minute walk), a 20 minute drive became a 90 minute ordeal. On the plus side, waiting for a late bus is more pleasant at the new Transit Center since signs tell you when the bus is actually coming whereas before you had no idea. IndyGo, in a statement on the new routes for #17 and #18, noted indeed ridership on the revamped Routes 17 and 18 is nothing to write home about: “The route 28 used to travel on Illinois between 49th and 46th. Average daily boarding for this area was about 5 people. The new routing on 18 and 28 is picking up approximately 15 people a day on average combined. We expect to see this number increase after Butler school season starts. Ridership on 17 in the changed area is actually flat.” The #17 now goes downtown almost 3 times an hour. So if you are headed downtown, that’s your bus. P.S.: Transit tax vote coming this November.

French Market grew from a parish picnic to an amazing festival in the last 26 years. One thing has stayed constant in that time - the commitment to quality French cuisine. Each dish is taste-tested - I was part of the bread tasting committee - for quality and value. Second Helpings and Ivy Tech culinary students work along side of parishioners to prepare the food, with additional items made by the Jazz Kitchen and The Food Guys Catering. Food offerings include quiche, escargot, oysters, mussels, cheese and fruit, rotisserie chicken, Tarte Flambé white Alsatian pizza, beef bourguignon, Crawfish Etouffee, crab cakes, pommes frites and ratatouille. French dip roast beef sandwiches, Chicken Provencal sandwiches and BBQ ribs will also be available. Desserts include beignets, cheesecake, cream puffs, éclairs, chocolate mousse and Madeleines. And there is bake sale in the school gymnasium so you can take some goodies home! Drinks include sweet tea, beer, and wine. The festival also features children’s games and kiddo-friendly food until 5:00 p.m. The musical lineup is: Fernando Tarango and the Wickersham Brothers from noon to 2:00 p.m., The Tides from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m., Frenchaxe 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and Toy Factory from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m. Mass will be celebrated in French by Father Michael Hoyt (who grew up in Meridian-Kessler) in the historic 1929 church. Dozens of artisans will be setting up booths, offering artwork, jewelry, apparel and religious items for sale. And since it’s a church festival you know there will be a raffle! The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
Honey and Apples
The only way to know if you like a wine is to taste it, especially when it comes to mead. Yes, that’s wine made from honey. It’s one of the oldest forms of wine and for years most of it was sweet. Local producers New Day Craft changed that. They’ve been making delicious dry style mead for a decade. Recently they added hard cider to their lineup. Here again is another form of fermented beverage that can range in style from sweet to dry. This weekend the City hosts its first festival dedicated to deciphering these ancient beverages. “Meadful Things and Outciders” takes place Saturday, September 3rd from 2-5pm (VIP tickets get you in at 1pm.) at the Circle City Industrial Complex, 1125 Brookside Drive. It’s that big blue building just off of Mass Ave and 10th street, a 15 minute drive down College from Broad Ripple. A ticket lets you sample over 110 different styles of mead and cider from all over the world. Food trucks, music and adoptable dogs and cats from FACE Low Cost Spay and Neutering too as the event raises money for that active organization. Tickets MUST be purchased in advance. www.newdaycraft.com.
Horses and Bacon
I haven’t quite achieved the State Fair frequent visitor miles of our wonderful Nora Spitznogle ( I did run into her on the last day while watching the Tractor Parade) but I did make it to 7 of the 21 days. I adored the Lego exhibit of a working farm, laughed at the Swashchucklers show, tapped my toes to Taiko Drum Project, found the Cheese Sculpture a rather dull chunk of celebration but at least it didn’t smell as if it was 200 years old. I admired the talents of the young and old who entered the often overlooked photography, painting and sewing exhibits, strolled through the Hook’s Drugstore Museum for the first time in 40 years, and delighted in the history, speed and class of the Harness Racing. The Midway and food were satisfying for both the eyes and the palate but for me, the highlight of the fair were the Percheron, Draft and Clydesdale shows and the Bacon Brothers performance on the Free Stage. Power, finesse, audience interaction and sheer pleasure would be how I would describe BOTH. Those massive horses amazed me with their ability to demonstrate strength, agility and grace in their competitive routines in the Coliseum. I’ve had a crush on Kevin Bacon since I saw him in “Diner”. He and his musically gifted brother Michael and a band of New York and Jersey musicians put on a rollicking two hour performance in the rain. Kevin sings as well as he acts, and the Bacon Brothers delivered a satisfying show. So did the Budweiser Clydesdales, who had more security than the Bacon Brothers, and an equally impressive tour bus. Jill A. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put a 9 in the left section of the bottom row which contains 4-6-7. The 9 in the left section of the top row eliminates the space below the 4. The 9 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces above the 7. The 9 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 4. The 9 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 6. The only place left is to the right of the 7. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Get Ready…Rivi’s Annual Dog Swim It one of my most favorite times of the year! . . .the end of summer. The days are getting shorter, the heat is subsiding, kids are back in school, and the pools are closing. That means, Dogs Get To Swim! Riviera Club is opening its pool for the dogs. Located at 56th and Illinois, it is in Broad Ripple’s backyard. It is my childhood swim club that has activities all year round, but their summer pool closes Sunday, September 11− sad for the swimmers but great for the dogs. The dog swim is 5:30 to 7:00pm. The pups will have free reign of the pool and will enjoy diving, wading, and swimming. Member dog is $5 and non member dog is $10. This best part of the event is that all proceeds go to benefit some great dog nonprofit organizations. Celebrating the canine work in Indy, Riviera is donating to FACE, Waldo’s Muttley Crew, and Canine Companions for Independence. FACE is a fantastic, local lowcost Spay Neuter Clinic that also helps re-home homeless animals. They provide a needed service for Marion County so we can keep the unwanted animal population in check. Waldo’s Muttley Crew is a foster animal rescue with the mission of saving animals from poor environments, neglect, and kill shelters. They accept strays and dogs from owner who can no longer keep them. Canine Companions for Independence is the service dog program that I raise puppies for. They breed, raise, and train exceptional dogs that enhance the lives of people with disabilities. They say some angels have wings, others have tails. Canine Companions trains four types of assistance dogs: Service Dogs, Skilled Companions, Hearing Dogs and Facility Dogs. If you don’t know much about the Riviera Club (“Rivi”), it was founded and incorporated on 1933 by Indianapolis businessman Mr. James H. Makin. A later note from their history: “In August of 1950, the Club purchased additional property. It now consists of 27 acres that play host to 4 outdoor pools, 2 indoor pools, 14 tennis courts, a gym and an enclosed picnic house along with the Clubhouse with the fitness center and ballroom/dining rooms. The main outdoor pool is one of the largest in the country, larger than a football field, and holds 1,290,000 gallons of water. On a hot, busy day over 50,000 gallons can evaporate. The main pool also contains a 5-lane 50 meter course, a 5-lane 50 yard course, and a 5-lane 25 yard course. A diving tank with underwater windows was added in 1950.” This event is open to the public. Please note the facilities are accessible. I would really like you to come out and meet our service dogs and representatives from FACE and Waldo’s. If inclement weather, check with Rivi. rivi.org acespayneuter.org waldosmuttleycrew.com cci.org

Random Ripplings The employees of the Broad Ripple Kroger, 6220 Guilford Avenue [I4 on map], were treated to a cookout party at the south patio to celebrate the store’s safety record. This is Kroger’s 76th year at this location and in Broad Ripple for much longer than that!
