The Washington Township Moose Lodge #2138 will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, October 8 starting at Noon. They are a fraternal organization that organizes various events for kids in need that impact the local community and host a variety of social events. Governor Stan Bright and Treasurer Eric Renner recently mentioned their history and current events. “The original charter for the Washington Township Moose Lodge was issued on October 30, 1966. Our first location was at 1577 E. 77th Street near White River. We moved to this current location from 8400 Union Chapel Road in 1979,” Renner explained. Editor’s note: The 1968 and 1970 Indianapolis phone books list the Lodge at 6265 Carrollton Avenue. In the 1970s the Lodge was at 811 Westfield Boulevard, where Bazbeaux Pizza is now. “We did a complete renovation before moving here and revitalized the place, paving the parking lot and lodge, repairing the AV (audio-visual), HVAC (heating ventilation air conditioning), roof and installing a satellite TV system,” said Bright. He currently serving his second two-year term as Washington Township Moose Lodge #2138 Governor, having received a dispensation from the General Moose Lodge Governor since he ran unopposed in 2014. His father, Dave, was also a member of the Moose Lodge here. Bright retired from Allison Transmission, where he also worked with Delco Electronics and Allison’s Gas Turbine Division. Renner is the National Sales Manager for Sports Select USA that installs wireless entertainment systems for sports bars and restaurants. They met through mutual friends at a local establishment years ago before becoming members at Moose lodge #2138. “We host events here weekly. Every Monday is Euchre night. On Wednesdays, Moose Lodge 2138 we have trivia contests and a Queen of 5146 Brouse Ave. Hearts Drawing. On Sundays during the National Football League season, lodge2138.moosepages.org Indianapolis Colts games can be seen on any of five wide screen TVs. There is also a pool table and overhead movie projection screen. We plan to start playing poker since acquiring a charity and gaming license,” Renner said. “There will a band, barbeque, hog roast, hamburgers and hot dogs. We hosted a kick-off event on Saturday, July 23 with local singer Brenda Williams,” Bright mentioned. We have charters in Central Indiana, including Beech Grove, Greenfield, Greenwood, Indianapolis, Richmond, Shelbyville and Speedway. We also host events for ‘Outside the Box’ (www.outsidethebox.org) which provides services for special needs individuals from their upper teens to adults. We recently purchased 400 tickets to Indianapolis Indiana games from one of the ladies who works for the Special Olympics. We later sold them and donated $420 to the Special Olympics for Autism Speaks,” Renner added. “The Washington Township Lodge is open seven days a week. We have a great bunch of dedicated members that meet for fun and good laughs, all the while remembering we’re supporting a greater mission of kids in need and our senior members. It has been home to the Loyal Order of Moose and Women of the Moose since 1922. Moose Charities (www.moosecharities.org) is a registered non-profit in Mooseheart, Illinois that provides resources for the continued operation and support of the Mooseheart Child City & School and the Moosehaven retirement community. As the Washington Township Moose Lodge #2138 prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, their mission continues by helping those in need and providing fellowship among long-time and new friends in the community.

Westfield bridge story update Dennis Boone brought the story of rescuing the Westfield bridge plaque story to the gazette (see Volume 13 #15). RUMMAGE SALES Rummage Sale at St. Edward the Confessor
On September 24th, 2016, between 8am-2pm, the parish of St. Edward the Confessor, 6361 N. Keystone Ave., will hold its 3rd annual neighborhood rummage sale. St Margret’s guild has gathered items and will conduct the rummage sale. This event is part of our efforts to help those in our community who are in need. New Waste and Recycling Collection Schedule in Indianapolis
Republic Services, together with the City of Indianapolis, announces a new trash and recycling collection schedule for customers in Indianapolis. New waste and recycling collection days will start the week of Sept. 12, 2016 and will affect 60% of Indianapolis residential neighborhoods that receive collection service from Republic. Republic’s customers affected by this service change were notified by mail 30 days ago. The flier was customized for each neighborhood with the new pick up date. Indianapolis residents who are not sure of their new pick up date may visit the City of Indianapolis Government Profile website: http://maps.indy.gov/GovProfile/ to check their new service dates. New Photo Exhibit at Perk Up Cafe
Indiana photographer, Patrick MacDonald will be opening an exhibit at the Perk Up Cafe, 6536 Cornell Avenue [C5 on map], on September 18. His work will feature abstract landscapes from around the world. MacDonald’s career working for newspapers gave him the opportunity to see things far and wide through the lens of his camera.
Circle of Lights presented by IBEW #481 kicks off talent search for 54th annual celebration - AUDITIONS
We all know America’s Got Talent… and we know much talent can be found right here in Central Indiana! Downtown Indy and the electrical workers of IBEW #481 announce that it is time for Indy’s own renowned holiday auditions. All entertainers, singers, musicians, dancers, choral groups and more are invited to audition to perform at the 54th annual Circle of Lights® presented IBEW #481, which takes place on Monument Circle in Downtown Indianapolis Friday, Nov. 25. Circle of Lights’ media partner, WTHR-13, will showcase an audition special, Circle of Lights: Indiana’s Got Talent, taking viewers behind the scenes as hundreds of Hoosier singers, dancers and entertainers vie for a spot in the beloved Circle of Lights show. The one-hour special will premiere Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. on WTHR-13. This is in addition to WTHR-13’s live coverage of the Circle of Lights® Friday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. Selected finalists from first auditions will be called back for a final audition. With more than 100 acts auditioning each year, a second audition allows judges to focus on the top acts and then select the finalists for the live show. First round auditions will take place as follows at IBEW 481, 1828 N. Meridian St.: Saturday, Oct. 1 from 8:30 a.m. – noon, Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 4 – 7:30 p.m. A final, invitation-only audition will take place for selected finalists in mid-October. Acts are encouraged to have a second number prepared should they be invited to call-backs. Singers are strongly advised NOT to perform a cappella! There is no need to pre-register for auditions. Performers will audition in the order in which they arrive. Performers should choose either Oct. 1 or 4 and allow several hours for the audition process. Performers should prepare a number/act using the following specifications: Auditions should not exceed two minutes. This time limit will be strictly enforced at auditions. Acts chosen for the show will have approximately 3 – 3½ minutes to perform but for the sake of time, we must limit auditions. A holiday theme is required (upbeat preferred.) A cappella acts are rarely chosen to advance. Please bring recorded musical tracks formatted to CD.

The election will take place on October 18, 2016 during the Annual Fall Meeting of BRVA. The Board of Directors provides guidance, oversight, and hands-on expertise in all facets of the BRVA. Through its volunteers and standing committees, BRVA monitors developments in the Village and works with city officials to promote neighborhood safety and improvements; communicates with its stakeholders on activities in the neighborhood; promotes its member businesses to the community, and sponsors numerous special events. These activities are designed to maintain and enhance the livability and desirability of Broad Ripple as a premier neighborhood and cultural district within Indianapolis. Candidates for board positions must: Commit to a three-year term of office, to begin on January 1, 2017 and end on December 31, 2019, Have a desire to contribute to Broad Ripple Village through active participation on at least one BRVA committee (for example: Membership, Land Use & Development, Beautification, Economic Development, and Governance.) , Be a dues-paying member in good standing of BRVA. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

I’ve been obsessively listening to my copy of the album this week. From 1979 to 1981 the Industrials were a huge part of Indiana punk scene - and my introduction to independent music. Their technology-driven manic music is the stuff that legends are made of. I was lucky enough to meet the band in 1979 when Chris Clark was voted president of the Purdue student body and I was an uber-shy freshman sneaking into the student government offices to use the typewriter. The panel: 40 YEARS LATER: THE ROOTS OF INDIANA PUNK AND THE RISE OF GULCHER Who was the first Indiana punk band? How did Gulcher Records begin? Why are there two (or three?) versions of the Gizmos? Who were the Chinaboise, Cerberus, Retarded Godz or Skunts? Why do people still care? The revitalized Ruins at Holliday Park will open to the public on Saturday, September 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. as part of the Rock the Ruins festival. According to Friends of Holliday Park, the project was part of a five-year, $3.2 million capital campaign. The Ruins, which originally opened in 1978 has been off limits to the public for almost twenty years. A free celebration with live music by Toy Factory, food trucks from the Indy Food Truck Alliance, beer and wine stations, and free kids activities will be held then. The group notes: “The Ruins are the most identifiable element of the park. International sculptor Karl Bitter designed the Races of Mankind sculptures in the 1890s. The assemblage of fountains, columns and statues, designed by artist Elmer Taflinger, is one of Indianapolis’ most distinctive art installations. For almost two decades, The Ruins stood fenced in and overgrown – off limits to the public. The new design by local landscape architects Eric Fulford (deceased) and Ann Reed of NINEbark, re-energizes the front third of the park creating spaces for events, performances and celebrations, and invites the public to interact with The Ruins as never allowed before. Horticultural design of the gardens created by Chris Turner/Utopos Gardens and construction by Smock Fansler Corporation.”

Sorry Detroit. Indy is going car free on September 22. IndyGo and others are urging you to ride a bike, take the bus, or at least car pool on that day. They are also displaying their new rapid bus on that day on Monument Circle from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The new red line bus rapid transit bus route will serve Broad Ripple. “IndyGo is excited to showcase this state-of-the-art bus technology in Marion County,” said IndyGo CEO and President, Michael Terry. “We encourage residents to learn about what dedicated transit investment would mean for our IndyGo network and community by experiencing the bus in person.” Note that the red line bus rapid transit is not dependent on passage of the income tax hike on November 8.

by Brandt Carter Books: Here to Stay This summer I have spent lots of time cleaning out what needs to be thinned, purged, or organized. I found two big boxes of baby clothes from 40 years ago, 45 records (speed not number) from 60 years ago, boxes of magazines saved from 25 years ago to look! I won’t bore you with any more stuff that we found, but the “stuff” confirmed how life has changed. Don’t need the magazines anymore…I have bing.com. Don’t need the snap undershirts for babies….there are onesies. Don’t need the 45 records….I have downloads. I did find a few books that I couldn’t part with. I surmise that photos and letters may become extinct because of digital pictures and emails, but I have faith that books are alive in spite of Kindles and e-books. For years I have been attending the Indiana Library Foundation book sale and I am always amazed at the number of people who descend upon the used book sale. Each time I attend, it confirms my belief that books and print are here to stay. The library has always been a special place for many folks. At the original Broad Ripple Library on Guilford, I used to love to check out the mounted pictures to accompany my reports for school. I felt really accomplished when I mastered how to use the Dewey Decimal System to find a book on the shelves. The check-out cards in the back of the book were fun to study to see who else had read the book. I loved the summer reading club when I got stars or stickers for a book read…now days this would not encourage many to engage. Oh, have libraries changed! Today, you will find lots of computers alongside books in both the children’s and adult’s sections. There are self-check outs, job coaching and employment help, and generous offerings of classes, discussions, and events. Some libraries even check out items other than books. The library has changed to serve their customers just like many other businesses. One event the library offers has remained fairly constant—the used book sale. The Library Service Center hosts the sale five times a year, each for five consecutive days. If you are a Friend of the Library Foundation, you get first-night access to the sale. After the first evening, the sale located at 2450 N. Meridian Street is open to the public. The items at the sale are donated or have been pulled out of circulation from the different libraries in Indy. Pricing is the amazing feature of these events: Adult Hardbacks: $2.00; Juvenile Hardbacks: $1.00; Paperback books: 50 cents; Juvenile Paperbacks: 25 cents; Records, Tapes & CDs: 50 cents to $1.00; DVDs: $1.00 - $3.00. They also have a corner for off-price, more valuable items. Last time I went they had lots of comic books, and I got 3 for a dollar. My grandson loved them! Just a bit more about the sale–it began in 1982 and was called Secondhand Prose. More than $4.6 million has been raised for the Library Foundation through book sale proceeds. The Indy Library Store also sells online at Amazon, AbeBooks and eBay anytime. Finally, you can donate your books to the Indy Library Store! One time I was in line checking out, and I saw a woman watching a twenty-something customer that had a huge stack of children’s books. I heard her ask if she was a teacher. The young woman said yes and that her school didn’t have the funds to buy books for her class. This was neat because the older woman told the clerk to put that stack of books on her tab! That truly was a moment when I was glad I came to the book sale that night. You never know who you will meet there, what great items you will find, or what will happen. 2016 Midtown Education Summit By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com The 2016 Midtown Education Summit is Thursday, September 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Sunburst Atrium of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, located at 3000 N. Meridian Street. The annual event has grown since its inception in 2013. “In the first year, we brought between 60 and 100 schools together from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. It’s a one stop shop for families who are trying to locate the right academic program for their children. We find that families sometimes struggle to locate education options for their children, but we do our best to help them find out about these program opportunities. The educational summit is a once a year, once in a lifetime opportunity for families to get all of the information they need for their child where they can see all these schools in one place at one time. We want to make people aware of the opportunities available for their kids. It’s hosted annually by the Children’s Museum with about a dozen sponsors, which include 100 Black Men, the Marion County Indiana Board of Realtors (MIBOR), the local Kiwanis Club, Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association and State Farm Insurance,” explained Michael McKillip, Executive Director at Midtown Indianapolis, Inc. A career transition inspired his achievements in the local community. “I spent about a decade working at the State House as a lobbyist. I left in 2007 to start my own real estate agency and construction company. I bought an abandoned home in the Mapleton Fall Creek area in 2002. In getting to know my neighbors and getting involved in renovation and through volunteer opportunities with Harmoni, we focused on renovating the historic midtown photo courtesy of Midtown neighborhood that includes Midtown Education Summit at the Children’s Museum. 17 communities. In 2007, while serving as Board President for the Maple Road Development Association, I helped established Midtown, Inc. and became its first full-time Executive Director in 2012. By working together several years, partnerships were formed in uniting these 17 communities. Regardless of current conditions, neighborhoods were suffering from neglect, but we have been working to bring them together to one voice for community investment,” McKillip noted. Ongoing revitalization has made the Midtown area a soughtafter destination for home buyers and parents seeking educational prospects for their children.” Butler University College of Education professor Dr. Lori Desautels will give a presentation, “Educating Our Kids Using Science of the Brain.” Dr. Desautels will answer questions after her discussion, which starts at 6 p.m. Academic and administrative staff from charter schools, parochial schools, Montessori schools, IPS and others will be available to answer questions about their curriculum and programs. All are welcome to attend this event and free parking will be available. “Whether you have questions about your next Midtown school or you are a Realtor who wants to know more about options in Midtown, this is the event for you,” said Elizabeth Marshall, who is a State Farm Insurance agent in Broad Ripple. “We really want families from all over our community, from Fall Creek near the Museum to the Broad Ripple area to have awareness of the quality of pre-kindergarten through high school educational options available to their children,” said Anthony Bridgeman, Director of Community Initiatives at The Children’s Museum, who is a title sponsor for the event.
