alan@broadripplegazette.com The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) held the annual meeting and board election at the Indianapolis Art Center on October 18. There were about 80 in attendance. Outgoing BRVA president Kent Springer conducted the meeting which explained why the BRVA exists and the accomplishments in 2016. Then, each of the eight candidates for the three open BRVA board positions explained why they would like to be elected. Next Special Recognitions went out to: Elizabeth Marshall, Barbara Wilder, Mark Demerly, Linda Shikany, Mary Holland, and Sue Zilisch. Elizabeth Marshall presented the annual Esprit De Corps award (see Buzzing Around Town for details). Door prizes were provided by Brothers Bar & Grill, Half Baked Pottery & Gifts and Luciana’s Mexican Restaurant. After the meeting beer and pizza was provided by Broad Ripple Brewpub and Union Jack Pub. The BRVA later announced the results of the election: the two incumbents were re-elected, Rob Felton, Chris McElwee, and new to the board will be Kate Stephens.
John Hill of the Broad Ripple Brewpub started the Hoods and Hops car show in Broad Ripple in 2011. This year was the largest yet, with over 100 classic cars on display. The car entry fees and beer sales (beer donated by the Broad Ripple Brewpub) went to support the BRVA. The food sales (food donated by the Brewpub) went to support the Rocky Ripple Community. Thanks to John Hill and the Brewpub for this great community event!
Boat tour of White River - silt and weeds
The Gazette joined a tour of White River recently to assess the problems caused by silt and chemicals in the river. We went from the dam up past the Keystone bridge. At Sandy Point we saw how the silt has been deposited in amounts that creates a land bridge, diverting the main river flow eastward. Residents hope to correct this flow and restore it to the natural path. The next resident meeting has been scheduled for Monday, November 7, 6:00 p.m. at the White River Yacht Club. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I was lucky enough to be in the attendance of the Broad Ripple Village Association when our Alan Hague won the Esprit de Corps award. BRVA pastpresident Elizabeth Marshall defined esprit de corps as “feelings of loyalty, enthusiasm, and devotion to a group among people who are members of the group.” In presenting the award, Elizabeth said “This year’s winner certainly embodies that definition. In his job, they regularly promote activities in the Village as well as businesses both new and established both which generate feelings of loyalty and enthusiasm to this great neighborhood. “We all love to have a great resource in our back pocket and our winner is photo by Nora Spitznogle someone who is always in the know and provides answers to many of the questions you have about what is going on around the Village. “He is an avid history buff, preserving and celebrating the past but also helping to shape the future of our Village. “He is a lifelong resident of the Broad Ripple area, BRHS graduate, and a staple of all things Broad Ripple. “Please help me congratulate the Broad Ripple Village 2016 Esprit de Corps winner, Alan Hague.” Well deserved, Alan!
Commercial Article 09 Launch Party Friday, November 4 PRINTtEXT 652 E. 52nd Street - all-ages, free, 6-9 pm
The ninth issue of the Commercial Article is will be launched with strudel and a talk by author Connie Zeigler. Why strudel? Designer Roland Hobart came to Indiana from his native Innsbruk in 1966. He quickly became a prominent figure in the 1970s central Indiana art and design communities. His towering achievement, the mural at 32 N. Delaware Street, is in danger of literally fading into obscurity. I’ve really enjoyed learning more about Indianapolis designers through the Commercial Article series and I think you will also!

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. Life on Earth school is difficult. Pain abounds all around. However, pain is the touchstone of spiritual growth. So consider:
Seeds of Pain I was beaten And Defeated I had lost the will to fight At this time The seeds of pain Helped my Soul Embrace the light Abstract James Horn C.W. Pruitt II 2004 The journey is difficult though life. But the trip is profoundly beautiful beyond poetic description. So I offer:

www.broadripplegazette.com Vote! Don’t forget to vote November 8. My recommendations: • YES on improving transit (the .25 percent income tax to improve IndyGo): We can do this! • NO on the constitutional amendment which makes hunting and fishing the preferred resource management tool. Such minutia does not belong in the Constitution and your right to hunt and fish are hardly under siege. • For the other races, remember RFRA and those legislators and parties that dwell on matters that give the state a black eye and make it difficult for employers to recruit employees. Rainbow Bridge gets upgrade Thanks to President Kent Springer of BRVA for getting the City to repair the canal bank’s beleaguered south side with new rock. Random Ripplings A new mural is up at Jiffy Lube, 64th and College Avenue. The design is by artist Ethan Culleton - Harmony: a pleasing combination or arrangement of different things. “This design is a metaphor for bringing differences together in harmony to produce something beautiful. The various colors represent diversity of people, philosophies, and ideas coming together in a harmonious way to create things that have never existed before. The flowers represent the beautiful growth that comes from existing in harmony in light of our differences. Broad Ripple has a reputation for being socially, economically, and ethnically diverse as represented by this design.” Below: Steve Sanner (red cap), owner Jiffy Lube, working on the mural.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put an 2 in the middle section of the bottom row which contains 3-6-8-9. The 2 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 3. The 2 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the space between the 8-9. The 2 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces above the 9. The only place left is directly above the 3. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Some scarily good wine from the Santa Lucia Highlands area of California. The Sleepy Hollow Vineyard has terroir and climate akin to the Burgundy region of France, home to some of the worlds finest and most expensive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Talbott Vineyards offers up two affordable gems from this hillside vineyard near the Pacific Ocean. The lush fruity Kali Hart Chardonnay shows tropical and Asian fruit. The Kali Hart Pinot Noir is earthy and rich with notes of plum and red currant. Great values and excellent candidates for Thanksgiving dinner too.

by Brandt Carter Behind The Shopping Scene I just attended the Wild Bird Expo in Mexico….Mexico, Missouri, that is. I wanted to tell you all about the new products that we will have for this holiday season, but first I need to report to you my impressions of our first time visit to this event. The Expo has little to do with Broad Ripple itself but it has a lot to do with all the folks that feed the birds or those retailers who sell bird feeding products. The Expo was amazing! The people we met were more interesting than the products we saw. From Portland, OR to New Hampshire, to Florida to Texas, the attendees were drawn to this event because of their love of nature and birds. What is a given is that most retailers who start up a backyard birdfeeding store are avid backyard birdfeeding hobbyists. I would say 99% of the attendees had the love of the hobby before their store. I met many people who have been in the business for over twenty and thirty years. In fact Mel Toellner, owner of Goldcrest Distributing who held the Expo, began this business in 1995 after he owned his own store and had a difficult time finding vendors to supply what his customers wanted for their backyard birds. Mel’s story is a successful entrepreneurship that is still evolving. Retiring as a Purina distributor, he began Songbird Station retail store in Columbia, Mo. He began distributing products out of his garage. (Think how many businesses start in a garage: Apple, Lucas Oil). He has now grown into a wholesale operation that is the largest backyard nature product distribution company in North America, if not the world. His warehouse space in 2017 will be 107,000 square feet with a full FedEx eighteen wheeler coming and going daily. All the company’s growth has come by working with smaller operations — regional stores and mom-and-pop retailers just like Backyard Birds. The big boys (box stores and franchises) came calling, but Toellner long ago made a conscious decision to stick with smaller players. “This company serves independent retailers,” he said. In 2000, it served 500 of them. Today, it serves 4,000 with a selection of more than 10,000 items. I want my readers to know the number of stores to see that our Broad Ripple store is keeping good company. So we spent three days wandering the warehouse, picking out new products, and talking to other retailers and vendors. What fun! The most amazing part, unlike franchising where fees are involved, Mel invited all his store owners to come and shop at his expense. That’s right. He booked and paid for our hotels and wined and dined us just for coming to Mexico. His generosity is amazing! This holiday season, you will get to see what we found at the show. Puzzles surprisingly are big this year. A jigsaw puzzle on a table next to a window is a perfect winter activity for all ages. We selected some gorgeous cedar art, purchased some new hummingbird feeders for gift giving, and of course, ordered wooden feeders for your backyard. Chimes are still popular and we augmented them with some tinkling glass wind chimes. We also checked out all the new peanuts feeders. Peanuts are becoming one of our best sellers because of the birds they attract and the fact that there is no mess left under the feeders. We will also have a limited number of handmade fairy garden houses in the store this year. We look forward to your business this year. Remember there is always a coupon on our website www.feedbackyardbirds.com and you can check out our Facebook page and see local birds photographed by Jan Luckett. If you want to share bird photos with our Facebook fans, please send your jpeg to broadripplebackyardbirds@gmail.com. We hope to see you this holiday season. Shop local!
