Indy Thunder Beep Ball - World Series Champs

There were about 30 in attendance at the October public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee. There were four items on the agenda and two routine liquor license transfers. The agenda from the BRVA is in bold italics. A. 6357 Guilford Avenue, regarding a variance to legally establish and provide for commercial uses with 2 parking spaces (9 required) and a zero front set back (10 feet required) and maneuvering within the right of way (not permitted). Petition #2016DV1-048. Hearing Tuesday, November 1. This request is a relaxation of requirements of parking and distance to the property line for an existing building between brics and Untitled Ink tattoo parlor [E4 on map]. This building, with a Guilford address but is actually on Cornell, has previously been Shear Uphoria salon. The plan is to open a small retail women’s clothing store at this location. The committee voted to support this request. B.927/929 E. Westfield Boulevard, regarding a variance of development for the construction and renovation of commercial buildings with zero foot front yards and within the right-of-way of Westfield Blvd. and the abutting alley (all not permitted) without landscaping and with 11 parking spaces (48 required). Petition #2016-DV2035. Hearing Tuesday, November 15. This project is the remodeling of the old Broad Ripple Steakhouse/La Chinita Poblana/ old New Paradise Cafe at the southwest corner of Westfield and Winthrop. This was the 3rd or 4th time this has been presented to the committee and few changes have been made to this now final plan. There was a long discussion about parking. The arguments included - when do we stop granting variances for parking when they may exceed the capacity of the parking garage, and conversely, we should plan for a future where employees live nearby and walk/bike/bus to work. The petitioner agreed to send a final parking document to the committee and then the committee would take an electronic vote. C. 6280 College Avenue, regarding a variance of use to provide for an automobile rental facility, including an office and car wash facility on the roof of the existing garage (not permitted) for Enterprise Leasing Company at this location. Petition #2016-UV1-025. Hearing Tuesday, November 1. This was the second appearance before the committee for this project. It is a proposal to lease approximately 25 parking spots on the roof level of the Broad Ripple Parking garage for an Enterprise Car Rental location. It would be a 5 year lease with options to extend to 20 years. The committee expressed concerns that this garage was built with public funds to provide for public parking. While the garage may be underutilized currently, Village expansion will rely on this parking space in the future. The committee delayed a vote on the matter. After parking statistics are received, the committee will take an electronic vote. The hearing before the zoning board downtown was continued until December 6 at 1pm at the City-County building. D. 6320 Ferguson Street, regarding a rezoning to MU2 and a variance for a restaurant with outdoor seating and less parking than required. Have filed and hearing is November 17. This is the second appearance before the committee for the proposal to convert the doctor office building just north of the canal [E4 on map] to a restaurant. There would be 170 seats inside and 65 seats on the patio. The restaurant would be similar to Tavern on South. After a long discussion about parking, the committee voted to support the petition with 6320 Ferguson Street - previously a doctor’s office some conditions. E. Alcoholic Beverage Permits: 1001 Food & Drink new ownership, The Nook (formerly Village Cigar) permit transfer The next public meeting of the land use committee is planned for November 22 at 6pm at Northminster Presbyterian Church.

mario@broadripplegazette.com Darnell Booker is General Manager, Vice President and Coach of the Indy Thunder, a blind and visually impaired baseball team that won the 2016 National Beep Baseball World Series for the first time. He recently shared his passion for the national pastime. “I played for the Indy Eagles in my senior year of high school at the Indiana School for Blind and Visually Impaired. After graduation, I played fulltime from 1985 to 2000 and started the Indy Thunder from scratch in January of 2000 and have operated it for 16 years. They were two photo courtesy of Roni Higdon different teams in the same league. (The Indy Eagles stopped playing in 1991). From 1991 to 1999, I played with different teams across the Midwest and then decided to start my own team. We’re a team from Indiana, but are based in Broad Ripple and practice there behind the tennis court. We also practice at Park Tutor and Optimist Park. We won the National Beep Ball World Series in Chicago as the Indianapolis Eagles in 1990, but this is our first World Series Championship as the Indy Thunder. Ron Brown and I were teammates in 1990 and he is a member of this championship team as well,” Booker explained. He described how beep ball is played. “We play our games on a soccer field, with two bases - first and third. The batter and pitcher are on the same team. If the batter reaches the beeping first or third base (activated once they hit the ball) before a fielder retrieves the ball, the batter is safe. There’s no throwing in beep baseball. After one of two spotters call a specific zone (area) where the ball is hit, the defense must work together to field the ball.” The Indy Thunder won 11 of 12 games this past season and were undefeated in the post-reason, winning 19 out of 20 games overall. They defeated the Boston Renegades for the National Beep Ball Association (NBBA) Championship. “I’d like to personally thank all of our sponsors who have been supporting us since 2000 and look forward to having a future partnership with them. They include Papa Johns, Bright Ideas, Bosma Enterprises, Sherwin Williams, Kroger, Three Sisters, 56th Street Food Emporium and a lot of private donors. I’ve been a proud resident of Broad Ripple, having lived in the area since 1996. I‘m also a member of the Broad Ripple Village Association and am on Optimists Club Board of Directors. I schedule events in the park for them,” he mentioned. Their 2016 World Series victory was built on recent success. “In 2015, we finished 8th nationally. Our volunteers are mostly from Indiana. We start in January with spring training. Our regular season starts in May with a weekend tournament. In June, the playoffs begin and our season

ends the last weekend in July with the World Series. If anybody wants to us to do exhibitions, we can do that after World Series,” he said. “We have indoor practices beginning January 8, 2017 at the 10th Street Sports Center, Xtra Innings, near West 10th and Raceway Road. Practice times are every Sunday from 9 a.m. to Noon until the end of March. Our practices are free and open to the public. We are in Optimist Park on Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and in Broad Ripple Park on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. near the baseball diamond. After Memorial Day, we practice at Park Tutor on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. We play our games in the outfield of the baseball diamond on a flat surface,” he said. Booker described his personal vision for a field of dreams: “There were three dreams I had several years ago. One, I dreamed about having a team back in 2000 and second, hosting a World Series in Indianapolis. I was part of a committee that eventually hosted a World Series in 2011 with help from Merri Taylor, formerly of Indy Parks and Recreation. I thought, ‘Why couldn’t Indy host a World Series in 2011?’ Third, I dreamed about winning a World Series which we did in 2016. I hope Beep Ball stays around here forever. My two goals include locating a park or field to be a dedicated Beep Ball diamond and finding a partner in the community who could help us by either an in-kind donation of some land for us to play on or to provide some office space for our equipment and have a meeting area with our sponsors and the community. It would be nice to find an existing building and a dedicated, spacious grassy area on the north side of town. We are trying to bring awareness to the sport and have a partnership with the Indianapolis Indians who have really helped us promote our sport and attend our practices this year. We are always seeking volunteers, sponsors and in-kind donations. We have fundraisers throughout the year, like our bowl-a-thon that starts on April 15. They can follow us on Twitter at: @thunderbeepball ” After the Indy Thunder’s regular season ends, the post-season is in full swing. “We have regional tournaments to prepare for the World Series that takes place at the end of June. We will play at the Dynamo Soccer Field at 91st Street and College Avenue on June 2-4 in 2017. We went to St. Louis, Chicago and Cleveland for the regional tournament that prepared us for the World Series this year. Next year, the National Beep Ball World Series is in West Palm Beach, Florida. Our goal is to have about 30 people to travel there and our budget is $35,000 to travel to the regional tournaments and to the World Series. They can call me for more information. The Indy Thunder is a non-profit organization. Everything is voluntary. We don’t get paid. I just do it for the love of playing the game. One day you have a dream. We have a lot of youth and adults (veterans) on our team that range in age from 15 to 60. When we won the World Series, we had the youngest team ever to start in a championship game. Five of our starters are 20 years old and younger. In sports, you definitely have to have that mix of youth and veteran leadership. To see it come together like this is pretty amazing. About 99 percent of our team is from the state of Indiana in places like Gary, Evansville, Shelbyville and the greater Indianapolis area. The comradery of the players of various ages working together as they develop social and leadership skills makes a unique team. A lot of our athletes are economically challenged or on a fixed income,” he noted. The Indy Thunder are the Hoosier state’s boys of summer who are playing in a field of dreams now making reality.

Meghan Daum is the author of four books, most recently the collection of original essays The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion, which won the 2015 PEN Center USA Award for creative nonfiction. She is also the editor of The New York Times bestseller Selfish, Shallow & Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on the Decision Not To Have Kids. Her other books include the essay collection My Misspent Youth, the novel The Quality of Life Report, and Life Would Be Perfect If I Lived In That House, a memoir. Since 2005, Daum has been an opinion columnist at The Los Angeles Times, covering cultural and political topics. She has written for numerous magazines, including The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and Vogue. She is the recipient of a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2016 National Endowment for the Arts fellowship.

Beth Shapiro - Wednesday, November 30, 7:30 PM, Atherton Union, Reilly Room, “How to Clone a Mammoth”. Could extinct species, like mammoths and passenger pigeons, be brought back to life? Is it possible to clone extinct species using the same or similar technologies that created Dolly the sheep in the 1990s? In this lecture, Beth Shapiro, ancient DNA scientist and author of How to Clone a Mammoth, will discuss the real science behind the emerging idea known as “de-extinction.” From deciding which species should be restored, to sequencing and editing their genomes, to anticipating how revived populations might be overseen in the wild, she will walk through the process of resurrecting extinct species, considering the technical, ethical, and ecological challenges of de-extinction as well as its potential benefits.

Help IPL “Keep the Lights On” as daylight fades
Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), encourages customers to help keep our communities shining brightly at night as we head into winter months with less daylight. An easy call or click can “Keep the Lights On” in Indianapolis. If you see a streetlight not functioning properly, you can report it at IPLpower.com or by calling IPL’s “Lights Out, Day or Night” number at 317.261.8111. All you need to do is give the street light location and/or the number on the tag found on the utility pole. IPL makes every attempt to answer a repair request within two working days of the initial report barring natural disasters, acts of God or the inability of IPL to gain safe access. IPL also urges customers to call IPL directly at 317.261.8111 to report issues associated with public safety, such as a light or light pole that has fallen or been seriously damaged, or exposed wires at a light pole base. Both IPL and the City of Indianapolis have worked together to promote Operation Night Light, a collaborative project that lifted the City’s 35-year moratorium on new street lights and begins a multiphase process of installing new lighting infrastructure in darkened neighborhoods. “IPL recognizes that outdoor lighting can represent safety, convenience and value,” said Rafael Sanchez, IPL President and CEO. “We have a genuine commitment to working with the City of Indianapolis to determine the best, most cost-effective options to enhance safety and quality of life to our communities.” At a press conference in August, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and IPL President and CEO Rafael Sanchez announced the completed schedule of Phase I, which includes locations of 25 new street lights that will be installed in Indianapolis before the end of the year.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

I was lucky enough to see Seth Walker at The Jazz Kitchen a few years ago and the show was fabulous! Seth is a great roots musician - his sound has been aptly described as gospeldrenched, southern-inflicted, with a strong blues influence. As the child of classically trained musicians, Seth first played the cello. After his Uncle Landon Walker, a deejay and musician, introduced him to the blues, Seth picked up the guitar and hasn’t looked back. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Sewers cleaned thanks to BRVA, DPW Do you notice the rain overflow onto area streets after it rains? For example near the Bazbeaux Pizza/ Chase Bank parking lot? The Broad Ripple Village Association has been working with the City which has helped deal with the problem. According to BRVA President Kent Springer, the BRVA met with Department of Public Works officials after recent flooding issues in August on Broad Ripple Avenue. DPW agreed to inspect and clean the sewers on College, Broad Ripple, and Carrollton and that work took place October 21-25. The city took three days to clean out the sewers in the Village. “The BRVA is hopeful this will solve the drainage problems in the area until a more permanent solution may be found,” Springer stated.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put an 5 in the right section of the top row which contains 1-3-9. The 5 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 9. The 5 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space above and below the 9. The 5 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces below the 1. The only place left is directly to the right of the 1. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

mario@broadripplegazette.com Broad Ripple High School graduate and Indianapolis native Nicholas Smith described the canvas of his artistic endeavors. “In elementary school I was always interested in the arts, like drawing and painting. I went to IPS School 91, and my art teacher there really inspired me. When I started looking at high schools, I liked the Broad Ripple Art Magnet program. My sister went there and was a part of the magnet, so I knew a little about it. I ended up going there and spent at least two hours each day working on art,” he recalled. Smith graduated from BRHS in 2009 and went on to Butler University where he majored in Recording Industry Studies and minored in Art + Design. “I focused more on music after high school through my major and projects outside of school,” he said. Smith entered Butler University with his major declared, but had yet to declare a minor. After creating a painting for a project in a general education class, his
professor recommended he talk to the director of the art program. After declaring an art minor, Smith primarily focused on painting. “Since then, I have worked on mostly non-objective abstract art. I’m making an adult coloring book and have a Kickstarter campaign (tinyurl.com/j4pwwvc) for it. I work with color and paint in perspective to whatever inspires me in that moment,” he said.“I also do a lot of work as a hip-hop producer and engineer and occasionally work outside of that genre, sometimes producing pop, rhythm and blues and other genres. In addition, I also DJ and dabble on a few instruments,” Smith added. His exhibit, The Universe is Expanding, will have a reception on Wednesday, November 16 at the Schrott Center for the Arts on Butler University’s campus and will be displayed there until the end of the month. It was initially set up there with assistance from Steve Nyktas, who is Assistant Professor of Art at Butler University. Observing Smith’s work, Nyktas reflected, “He uses urban spaces and graffiti appearing together in a map-like setting. They feel like you’re looking down at the city or a skyline. A lot of his work juxtaposes acid colors with gestural line writing.” Bekah Pollard, a 2016 Butler University graduate with a degree in Art + Design, also assisted in setting up Smith’s work. She draws and paints portraits, in addition to creating collages featuring random items. As the first Butler graduate to have an art exhibit at Schrott Center for the Arts, Nicholas Smith is developing new creative horizons for others to pursue.

& Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

From 1903, the last parts of the supplemental ordinance for the traction company ordinance. Then, the ballot for the 1903 town election. SECTION 5. If the grantee, its successors and assigns, shall be unable to furnish the service herein before provided for any reason of accidents, strikes, act of God, or other cause beyond it’s control, it shall not be liable therefor.

The minutes of the last regular and ____ Call meetings read and approved except the minutes of Apr 27th which were approved Apr 29th. The Board instructed the Marshall to see that the Water Works Co did not put up a fence along the Westfield Gravel Road north of the Canal on the east side of said road. The Marshall was also instructed to repair the road at the Canal Bridge at Morgan Street. Wine America is a grassroots wine advocacy group focused on public policy issues that benefit wineries of all sizes in the US. The organization just held its annual Fall conference and shared some good news for wine grape growers, and wine juice drinkers. Valued at nearly $6 billion annually, grapes are the highest value fruit crop in the United States, and represent 37% of the value of all non-citrus fruit. • Grapes are the 6th largest fruit crop, with nearly 25,000 farms on over 1,000,000 acres producing almost 7,000,000 tons in 2014 • The U.S. accounts for 6% of the world’s grape acreage but 10% of grape production, reflecting its productivity and efficiency. • There are more than 8,700 wineries in the U.S. producing over 830,000,000 gallons, with California accounting for 85% of that. (Washington is second, and New York third.) • The U.S. produces 12% of the world’s wine, and consumes 13% of all wine, making it U.S. wine exports (90% from California) reached $1.49 billion in value in 2014 • Nearly 30,000,000 people visit wineries annually, providing employment to over 50,000 people. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter As the Seasons Turn I love a quote I recently read about children that I also think applies to life. “The days are long, but the years are short.” This summarizes my perception of the seasons also. The days are long, the seasons seem to rush by, and the years are very short. They even seem to be running together. This year I am going to meet this season head on! Autumn color, Halloween, and Thanksgiving influence the way I plant and decorate my yard. This is clean-up time in the garden; perennials and some spent vegetable plants need to be pulled. I like to dig my onions, potatoes and garlic now. I sometime sow an extra packet of lettuce, hoping for one last crop before the frost. I savor every plant that shows a flower one more time. Luckily there are a few plants that thrive in our Central Indiana hardiness Zone 6a (-10 to -5 degrees F). These are our average low temperatures where plants will not be killed. Mums, asters, kale and cabbages are some plants that beg to be added to the landscape and pots in the fall. Many perennials, such as purple coneflower, Black-Eyed Susans and butterfly bushes, will bloom until a hard freeze as long as you deadhead them (that means to cut off the old blossoms). Grasses will also perform well. They have set their spikelets often looking like feathers or statuesque fans on the horizon. This is the time of year that the birds love the seeds from the garden and field flowers and shrubs. Harvest time is not only for farmers, but all the wildlife are getting ready for the turn of fall into winter. Acorns and other nuts are the feast of squirrels and chipmunks. Seeds from zinnias, coneflowers, and Black-Eyed Susans attract the finches. Butterflies will visit the remaining blossoms. If you have fruit trees in your backyard, you will see half eaten remains of apples, plums, pears, and grapes where opossums or raccoons dined. The squirrels will eventually eat the pumpkins and enjoying every seed they find. The corn shocks I put around the yard will be stripped of the ears of corn during the season. They don’t seem as interested in the Indiana corn I put on my door. Although nature is providing goodies, I load my cleaned and mended feeders with seed and suet at this time. This is the time of the year wildlife are establishing their winter feeding habitats and I want a good view of my backyard critters when the snow is on the ground. I don’t forget my birdbaths or pond. I usually have to locate my bird bath heater because it has found its way to the back of the garage. I like to set up, but not turn on, my heaters while the weather is still enjoyable. An interesting fact is that by adding water to your yard, a birdbath, pond or fountain, you can attract more different kinds of species than just those birds that go to feeders. Not all birds eat seeds, but all birds need water. Celebrate autumn. Decorate your yard! Feed the birds and critters. Enjoy nature for the season passes quickly and soon the long winter months will be upon us. This is the time for thanksgiving. The wildlife seems thankful for the bounty of the autumn and I take extra time to be thankful and count my blessings. It is the seasonal times of years that amplify our activities and thoughts. Thanksgiving Day reminds us all to stop and be thankful. This season make memories of vibrant colors, crunching leaves, eating wonderful food, holidays, darker and cooler days, and reason for gratitude for the ebb and flow of nature.
