Drumstick Dash attendance hits 20,000

The annual Drumstick Dash is a fundraiser for Wheeler Mission. This was the final year for mascot Jerry Gobbler. Dash, the new turkey mascot was revealed. Dash got a head start and then the 20,000 were released to catch him. mario@broadripplegazette.com Entrepreneur and pastoral care minister Eddie Owens has transformed a former after-hours hangout into the family-oriented Our Restaurant, located at 3469 N. College Avenue. “Actually, it was a vision given to me by God and it kindly fit in with the former owners’ idea. I lease the building from the McFadden family. When I came to them with a proposal, it was similar to what they were doing. Mainly, what we have is a multi-purpose facility. Upstairs is a dance studio called Lanique Express that is rented out to Ladena Webb, who has a passion for dancing and for youth. There are about 60 kids ranging in age from five to 18 years old that practice different genres of dance on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I would rather see the children upstairs making a little noise than being arrested or out on the street doing something they aren’t supposed to be doing,” he explained. Our Restaurant opened on January 16, 2016 after extensive renovations. “We came in the area in October of 2015. My wife, Deola and I are the original owners. Ernie Staten and I started the scope of our work replacing the window panes, completing the plumbing and electrical work. Thomas Braxton and Ernie work in the kitchen. Parking is available across the street. There is some development going on here and we want to be a part of it as we look for investors,” Owens said. He owned Get Busy Ribs at the northwest corner of 49th and N. College Avenue from 1992 to 1994. It was voted the #3 BBQ place in a Nuvo magazine poll. His ministry work is another endeavor. “I work with an advocacy program, the Resource Treatment Center (RTC), that counsels and mentors young men from 14 to 18 years old that have been arrested or are on probation. I hire them and the program pays them to go to work. I teach them the restaurant business – hospitality, customer service, plain old morals, values and responsibility. It’s really simple. You grab the kids, show them some love and teach them responsibility. RTC (located at 1404 South East Street), houses homeless young kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) because of their parents leaving or abandoning photo by Mario Morone them. One of the things I Eddie Owens, Thomas Braxton and Ernie Staten. do is work with them. On Tuesday nights, we have a $5.99 all you can eat special with karaoke. They serve nonalcoholic drinks, work in the kitchen, wait the tables and help me with karaoke from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. I teach them all the same thing – to love another, promote good customer service and hospitality. There are about 12 to 14 kids that come in every Tuesday,” he mentioned. On Sundays, they have a $14.99 all you can eat buffet with a drink included. Our Restaurant’s most popular menu items are rib tips, a double burger and catfish. In March of 1995, Owens left a job managing a nightclub and made a new commitment. “I decided to serve my spiritual father the rest of my life and gave up drinking and smoking. I taught at New Era Church for 12 years and went into prayer, which is the best wireless connection.” With the Youth Advocate Program (YAP), he works with young men that are juvenile delinquents in trouble, most of whom are on probation. The program tries to find them jobs. Some are 15 years old and can’t work until after school, according to the program’s policy. “I’ve been with the 10 Point Coalition for 17 years and I’ve seen different types of programs elsewhere. After they started the local chapter in 1999, I joined since I was

already working in evangelization and outreach. I’ve been talking to young people since 2000. I’ve traveled within the community quite a bit, but also in the city. What our kids need is pure old fashioned love and jobs. The things they go through in their personal lives – they are belittled, but need to be raised up. In our society, we’re trying to make them grow up too fast. They need to be teenagers and may get into mischief every now and then. Yesterday (November 6), they came into the restaurant and did a detailed cleaning when it was closed. It was suggested by their program manager Marshawn Lorry. They attended the New Era Church at 517 West 30th Street and 35 of them gave their lives to Christ. ‘Evangelize the loss, edify the save, minister to those in need and be a conscience in the community’ is their mantra. Pastor Clarence R. Moore has been my mentor, spiritual teacher and a great example of a father, husband and leader. His wife, Hope, is the same. She loves kids. Pastor Moore has led his congregation for 27 years. I am trying to be all those things to these kids in the community. Seven years ago, an Adopt a Block program began with the slogan, ‘Without contact, no impact.’ Our Restaurant provides an open meeting space for discussion with anyone. We don’t make decisions based on what is right for people, as some things may be a closed door. We have to do something positive for young people in the community and have an impact with real solutions for real problems when dealing with people’s lives,” he emphasized. Owens received a service award from the 10 Point Coalition on November 24, 2013 for his work. His achievements were also acknowledged by Congressman André Carson for completing the Community Leadership Program with the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center in November of 2014. Rep. Carson wrote, “Through this program, you have invested your time, talent and energy to further develop yourself as an effective civic leader. Your hard work and dedication is coming to fruition today as you accomplish a worthy goal.” Several individual profiles of community benefactors can be seen at Our Restaurant. They include former RTV6 News reporter and anchor Barbara Boyd, Crispus Attucks basketball coach Ray Crowe, bicyclist Marshall Taylor, artist William Ryder and race car driver Charlie Wiggins. Their profiles can be found along the Indy Go bus route between the 2500 and 2900 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Drive. Regular gatherings at Our Restaurant include Citizens Gas retirees meeting the fourth Thursday of every month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Charles F. Black sings and plays piano during lunch daily. Owens occasionally plays the piano, guitar and drums in the restaurant. “We’re not in competition with Broad Ripple businesses, but would like to network with them and share musicians on a rotating basis. We want to give people a chance to explore the area outside their community,” he noted. They recently petitioned the State of Indiana about some property for a community park to honor Charlie Wiggins. Our Restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from Noon to 9 p.m., Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed Monday. Carry-out orders are offered with a limited delivery area. Discounts are available to law enforcement officers, college students and senior citizens. A banquet hall is available for special events. Inquiries can be answered at (317) 926-5911. On December 3, there will be a prayer breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Restaurant. Later that day, Owens will cater the Cumberland Festival. He recently catered a tailgate party at Kappa Alpha Psi at Indiana University’s Homecoming game across from Memorial Stadium. Through various local ministries, Eddie Owens has answered a spiritual call in inspiring, and guiding community youth one life at a time in Indianapolis.

The following is from an interview of Nora Spitznogle of Second Helpings (and the Gazette!) “My friend Becky Hopewell introduced me to Ken Honeywell and they told me about a great concert they were hosting - Tonic Ball - the Friday before Thanksgiving to benefit Second Helpings. That was in 2001 and I was a happy concert-goer that year. The next spring Ken and Becky asked me to be part of the committee and that started me down a life-changing path and a wonderful career. “Even though the Tonic Ball has always been held in Fountain Square it has deep Broad Ripple Roots. The first several years the committee meetings were held in Ken’s office in Broad Ripple, the Broad Ripple Brew Pub, CATH coffeehouse, or my backyard. LUNA music sold tickets and Indy’s Hostel’s John Newton loaned us his drum kit. “It took a real leap of faith for the bands that performed in the early days the concept of playing just two songs, at least one covering the band that was being featured, and then jumping off the stage was a new idea. The first year Ken convinced his friends to play and all of us on the committee joined in on the begging after that. I remember reaching out to musicians and sweetening the pot by offering a Broad Ripple Farmers Market gig and to highlight them in my column in this paper. Now it’s so popular that we have more interest from bands than openings to play. “My first three years on the committee I could recite what Second Helpings did - rescue surplus food from the community, prepare and deliver nutritious meals at no cost to other social service agencies, and train unemployed adults in culinary skills - but I’d never been in the building. The first time I was in Second Helpings it hit me like a lighting bolt how amazing the organization was and how much sense the whole thing made. When they had a staff opening for the manager of volunteer services I applied, never dreaming they would take a chance on someone with no nonprofit experience. I’m thrilled they did! Over 11 years later I still love working at Second Helpings and am active in the Tonic Ball committee. “Over the years the Tonic Ball has raised over $500,000 for Second Helpings and has grown from one venue to five and from ten bands to 80. Insider tip: buy your tickets as soon as they go on sale - most likely in August next year.”

Project Purse Indy hosts holiday R & R event with donation drive

Local nonprofit, Project Purse Indianapolis, will host their first R & R event at The Hatch in Broad Ripple on Sunday, Dec. 4 from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. C’est La Vie November 24th wasn’t just Thanksgiving, it was also National Carmenere Day. Wine lovers should be grateful as this French wine grape was once thought to be extinct. Carmenere was once known as “the lost grape of Bordeaux”. It was one of the handful of grapes from that region that combine to make the infamous Bordeaux style. But when the vine killing disease phylloxera hit France in the late 1800’s many wine makers thought the grape was gone. Fortunately some traveling vintners had clipped some healthy vines and taken them with them as they journeyed to South America. New vines grew and farmers called the grape Chilean Merlot. In the 1980’s a DNA specialist examined the grape and discovered that it was not merlot but was actually carmenere. Like merlot, this earthy red wine grape offers up notes of black cherry, plum and spice. It ages well and makes a fine blending grape or a satisfying rustic dry red wine on its own. It’s affordable and tasty paired with holiday ham, prime rib or turkey. A 21st century style worth sampling: Casa Silva Los Lingues Vineyard 2013, Colchagua Valley, Chile

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Showing a Little Appreciation This is the time of year when we are frantically shopping for the perfect gift and under pressure while making a homemade present. Giving gifts has become so commercial that Christmas popped up this year in many locations before Halloween. The stores have been decked with lights and décor. The biggest surprise is that Santa had arrived at one of our largest malls the day after Halloween. Goodness gracious, I sympathize with my Facebook post when I saw “hold on Santa, let us eat our turkey first” and “Move over big boy, wait your turn!” After attending the Broad Ripple Gazette appreciation dinner hosted by Alan Hague, his message hit home. Maybe all the gift giving is not as important as a bit of appreciation. Just taking the time to say “Thank You” or “Your work is greatly valued” is sometime better than untying the ribbon and opening the box to see what is inside. So this year, you might give a bit of appreciation and take the time to write a note, send a card, or give just a token gift. Who do you appreciate: your family, teachers, ministers, policemen, firemen, nurses and doctors, checkout clerks? You could tell the postman, a favorite waiter/waitress, housekeeper, bus driver, hairdresser, dog groomer, coworkers, and boss that you appreciate their services, and the help you give to my everyday life is important. How about the guys that pick up your trash, your handyman, bank teller, pharmacist, and dentist? You get the picture. A little note or a card is just perfect. You can hand deliver it or send it by post. No emails at this time of year that is too impersonal! If you want to say thanks, here’s what you can do. First keep it short. Here are tips from the experts at Hallmark: Greeting…Dear Bob, Dear Dr. Gray and all his office staff Sentence 1: Express your thanks and appreciation: Thank you so much for…; It made my day when I opened…. Sentence 2: Give specific details. Tell the person what work, service, or act of kindness they showed you: You deliver the milk to my house weekly and my family is depends on you; Sentence 3: Look ahead. As 2016 comes to a close, we look forward to being your customer in 2017. Sentence 4: Restate your thanks. Close with a final thank you. Again, thank you for your generosity; Thank you, we can’t wait to see you again soon! End with your regards. “Sincerely” is a safe standby, but for closer relationships, you might choose a warmer option: With warm regards, Regards, Your friend, Your client, Your patient, Yours truly. Put it all together in 4 sentences!
