Civil Engineering
Rising populations, global warming, progressive urbanisation, ongoing economic development and climate change present many threats to infrastructure; but also offer opportunities for sustainable development. On our courses, you’ll learn both the traditional and cutting-edge aspects of civil engineering and how to plan and create the infrastructure we’ll need in the 21st century. A core part of our ethos is sustainability, paralleling the ‘cradle-tocradle’ approach promoted by major national and international engineering businesses and professional bodies.
Our programme is a hands-on learning experience. You’ll acquire the fundamental theory and then test and apply that theory in the laboratory and on fieldwork, using advanced software. You’ll gain the experience and skills you need to engineer the next generation of necessary facilities, such as sustainable buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, flood protection and waste recycling. Our custom-designed technical facilities include modern material / structure testing, water treatment, soil sampling rig and road repairing system. If you opt for a placement year, you’ll gain experience and academic credit to fast-track you towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with the Engineering Council. You’ll also have the opportunity to exhibit your projects at our annual showcase event –Brunel Engineers, as well as in other industry-sponsored competitions.
Careers and your future
Potential careers include contractor and consultant positions on large infrastructure projects such as bridges, high-rise buildings, tunnels, flood and coastal defence schemes, water treatment, transport, highways, and modern methods of construction. Many of our graduates go on to jobs with global organisations and local government agencies or major firms of consulting engineers. Others specialise in construction, sustainability, innovative materials, foundation engineering, tunnelling, geotechnical exploration, or highway engineering. We have recent alumni now employed by Aecom, Arup, Atkins, Balfour Beatty, Careys, Clancy Docwra, Heathrow Airport, Mace and Thames Water.

Civil Engineering BEng
The Professional Development module stands out the most to me, as we get to learn about the key skills that are required in industry and how to execute them. All my lecturers are very good at what they do and have a passion to make sure we understand what’s being taught. I love my course!
