Sociology
How have digital technologies radically transformed our daily lives? How do institutions such as family, work or the media, structure our values and actions? How can social inequality be tackled? On our sociology programmes, you’ll discover how societies change, develop and are challenged. You’ll learn from our team of internationally leading academics who offer a global perspective to the subject.
Sociology at Brunel focuses on the latest social changes and transformations with a particular focus on areas like power, ethnicity, migration, politics, digital media, comedy and popular culture. We encourage you to develop your own interests by offering a variety of module choices. In your final year, you can design and carry out your own research project supported by your supervisor. Our experienced and research led teachers regularly provide expertise to the BBC, The Guardian, and other British and global media outlets, as well as cultural institutions such as the British Film Institute, Leicester Comedy Festival or the Museum of London, local councils, and NGOs.
Careers and your future
Sociologists are in increasing demand. A sociology degree is your passport to a wide variety of roles in marketing, advertising, the music and fashion industries, human resources management, journalism and social media, and many more. Throughout the course, you’ll develop hands-on and employable skills to critically reflect, articulate and communicate to diverse audiences in different environments.
Our industry and professional development modules will give you vital skills from professionals within sectors like the creative industries and NGOs, boosting your CV and knowledge of different sectors. We offer industry placements over two academic terms, and shorter industry internships and training. This gives you the opportunity to get hands-on work experience in roles within schools or marketing, social media, human resources and advocacy sectors.
