Politics and International Relations

Do you want to make a difference in today’s world? Are you fascinated and challenged by political unrest in the news and popular media? If these questions excite you and provoke another torrent of questions in turn, you’re looking in the right area for your degree course. Politics and international relations are exciting and dynamic areas of study, stimulating debate, and offering insight into how the ever-changing world around us works.

At Brunel, we’ll immerse you in the topics you study, and you’ll delve into a deeper analysis of the political world. We see politics as a science, so we understand that there’s more to your learning experience than just essay writing. We’ve structured our degrees to build your skills in critical thinking and quantitative methods and enhance your knowledge by using real-world examples.

You’ll benefit from the expertise of our academics, who are consultants to government departments including the UK Cabinet Office, Home Office and the Council of Europe.

Careers and your future

As part of your course, you’ll have the option to undertake a placement year. By opting for a placement, you could have the chance to gain experience in settings such as the House of Commons, HM Treasury and the Competition Commission.

Your degree will equip you with the skills to enter a number of roles, including Civil Service Fast Streamer, government social research officer, policy officer, politician’s assistant, public affairs consultant and teacher.

Our students pursue a wide variety of jobs after graduating. Some go into politics and the civil service, working for members of parliament such as John McDonnell MP, or former Labour party general secretary Baroness McDonagh. Other graduates have joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Home Office, GCHQ and military intelligence, whilst others work in the public and private sectors, law and non-governmental organisations.

Hal Politics BSc

I chose Brunel because they were one of a handful of universities close to London that offered a placement year. It’s been so easy to commute into the city to attend job interviews, applicant days and networking events in my spare time. This opportunity has now given me skills that can be used in any industry that I decide to go into in the future.
