Communication and Media Studies

Our degree provides you with a critical understanding of the media in today’s world. It has a particular focus on the social and cultural dimensions of media, whilst providing you with industry-standard skills via our accredited training in media production.

The course is closely connected with our Sociology department, combining the theoretical elements of sociology with the practical, hands-on elements of media studies. You’ll learn how the industry works from active research lecturers while debating concepts like media diversity, disruption, and the metaverse. You’ll study a range of practical multimedia production skills using our industry-standard equipment, giving you a foundation in areas such as photography, video / audio recording, and video editing in our dedicated media suite.

Careers and your future

The mix of practical media production skills and theory provides you with a wide range of career options when you graduate. Our alumni are working at prestigious international media organisations like Disney, ITV and Sky in roles such as TV production managers, digital marketing, and public relations. Some are working for the companies where they had undertaken a placement during their course.

Throughout your course, you’ll have access to mentoring and placement opportunities, whilst benefiting from our connections with leading industry employers, such as Europe’s largest sports broadcaster, IMG Media. We arrange formal partnerships with employers and ensure that you have access to a wide range of placement opportunities throughout your course; recent partners include the British Film Institute and CallTime Foundations.

My course has shown to be a great base for my future, as the programme offers a broad range of modules to choose from. I like that I get the opportunity to learn about sociology, psychology and media, in one course. This gave me options when choosing placements, internships and jobs.
