Criminology
Criminology is a fast-moving, constantly evolving subject reflecting current social and political trends. You’ll discover how the law can be used to marginalise and criminalise some communities, while ignoring the crimes of the rich and powerful. You’ll learn from academic staff who are actively engaged in criminological research, and their knowledge feeds directly into your degree.
Your course is built on understanding the importance of theory based on evidence. You’ll evaluate concepts of crime and deviance and we’ll encourage you to engage in debates about race, gender, migration, social harms, as well as a wide variety of other topics. You’ll learn skills in quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, which will allow you to challenge debates as they evolve.
Careers and your future
Employment opportunities for criminologists can be found across the public, private and voluntary sectors, including different criminal justice system sectors such as police services, border security, the National Crime Agency, prisons and probation services. You’ll also be well-placed to take up roles within related services such as addiction support services, youth services, and victim support services.
A criminology degree provides an excellent grounding if you’re thinking of continuing your studies with a conversion course, where you can go on to practice law. Your course will also provide you with the critical thinking skills that are sought after by third-sector organisations that challenge issues of human rights violations in areas such as migration, incarceration, and protest both in the UK and internationally.
Dr Rachel Stuart LLM Criminal Justice and Human Rights, Lecturer in Deviant Identities
I come from a Traveller background and would encourage anyone, whether they belong to a marginalised community or not, to study criminology. You’ll gain skills that allow you to work towards change from inside or outside of the criminal justice system.
