Storytelling is a fundamental human activity. Every day, we exchange jokes and stories. We tell and read stories for pleasure and information. If you’re ready to explore more widely, think more deeply and consider how you, as a reader, are placed in relation to a text – and how that affects your interpretation – you’ve come to the right place. You’ll be introduced to critical perspectives, approaches and contexts, which will give you the tools to interrogate your reading. You’ll analyse the impact technology is having on knowledge, culture and literature.
Our academics have years of experience helping to shape the modern literary industry. Their array of interests and experience feeds directly into their teaching, meaning you’ll have the chance to learn across a wide variety of genres, topics and periods. You also have the option to carry out a one-year work placement. Whether you want to gain publishing experience or see what life as a copywriter in a busy marketing department is like, this is an invaluable opportunity to build your confidence and see which future career is right for you.
Careers and your future
Whether you’d like to get into the more traditional routes an English degree can offer, like authorship or teaching, or pursue work in the worlds of marketing or the media, our courses allow you to build your knowledge in the area you love, without limiting your future prospects.
You’ll benefit from our academics’ in-depth knowledge and passion, as well as their first-hand experience of what it takes to break into the literary and creative fields. They have unique insight into what it takes to make it and can give you tailored advice and support when looking for graduate roles.
You’ll also become an expert on how to present an argument, deliver presentations and write compelling copy – skills that are highly valued by employers ranging from the healthcare sector to journalism.
