Geography

Geography provides a unique insight into how social and environmental processes together shape the world we inhabit. Through human geography, we understand the interactions of societies, cultures, economies, and political systems. Physical geography examines the dynamics of landscapes and the environment. Brunel is especially well placed to bring these sides of the subject together in programmes that explore some of the most challenging issues that confront our world, how they affect different groups of people, and ways in which they might be addressed.

A geography degree at Brunel will provide you with opportunities for learning in and beyond the classroom. You’ll examine the environment, people and the world we live in though lectures, fieldwork and practical work experience. Our assessments require you to apply your learning to real world situations, and present your ideas using different techniques. In your final year, you’ll develop advanced teamwork and leadership skills by applying your studies to a community-based project. Through your dissertation, you’ll practise the skills of planning and undertaking research independently. By the end of your studies, you’ll have developed the skills and knowledge you need to make change in the world.

Careers and your future

Geography graduates are highly employable. On average, they receive higher salaries than many other graduates, and work in a wide range of sectors and roles. You’ll develop highly marketable skills in gathering and presenting data, analysing spatial and numerical data, developing a reasoned argument, critical thinking, assessing moral and ethical issues, teamwork, communication, project management, and problem-solving.

Once you graduate, you’ll be ready to begin a career in areas such as local and national government, the environmental sector, international development, leisure and tourism, disaster risk management, communications, transport, planning, research and academia.
