Journalism

Brunel’s Journalism programmes combine a strong academic background with a broad range of essential journalism skills. You can choose either a politics or a communication pathway, in which you take core journalism modules alongside others, specific to your pathway. This means you’ll graduate with journalism and politics or communication in your degree title, flagging up to prospective employers your practical skills and academic rigour. You’ll be taught by experienced academics and seasoned industry professionals with outstanding knowledge in journalism, communication and politics.

With emphasis on digital technology in the practical modules, you’ll learn in a 24-hour, state-of-the art, multi-platform digital newsroom and broadcast facilities, using the latest edition industry-standard hardware and software. You’ll pick up practical skills during live-production days of The Hillingdon Herald – our studentproduced, local community focused newspaper. You’ll also develop an academically robust, critical understanding of the communication or politics environments in which journalism operates and interacts. Alongside your degree, you’ll have the opportunity to join the diploma course accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) – the industry recognised gateway to jobs in journalism.

Careers and your future

The combination of practical skills in journalism and rigorous academic study, gives you a wide range of career options. Many media companies specifically request Brunel graduates when they’re hiring, because of the high quality of students we produce.

Our graduates go on to work in journalism, primarily in the local and regional sector for print, web or broadcasting, and also in the flourishing periodical sector that includes magazines and industry journals. You’ll be well-equipped to create blogs and vlogs – for yourself or for others –and transfer your skills to related fields such as media production, public relations, content management, marketing, and advertising.

The environment we work in mirrors a professional newsroom, so when you enter the industry after graduation, you’re confident and comfortable working under pressure. But what I love most is the access to resources. The department is fully stocked with cameras, sound / lighting gear, radio and editing suites, which are all available to use and experiment with.
