Thanks to Charity Miles, I feel encouraged to go out more due to the fact that I can help a cause simply from walking. This month, I was able to give back to “Pencils of Promise”, an organization that strives to expand access to education throughout the world. As the name implies, the beginning of this cause traces back to a time when the founder gave a young boy in India the thing he wanted most: a pencil. The thought of how a common item in my life can be so rare in someone else’s eyes reminds me to not take things for granted. Luckily, with all my morning runs, grocery store trips, hikes, beach visits, and hangouts with friends, I can contribute to “Pencils of Promise” to give others the same opportunities as me.

August is the month right before the new school year starts again, and I am trying to use this part of summer vacation to its fullest extent. I hope to visit the Queens Botanical Garden soon; a sequel to my visit at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden last month. Recently, I realized that I enjoy looking and taking pictures of nature since it is a peaceful escape from the usually loud and bustling city that surrounds me. Since there is a lot to look at in these gardens, I can definitely walk for hours and hours. At the end of a long day, I’ve gotten into the habit of pulling out my phone and checking the amount of steps and miles that I accumulated. Now with Charity Miles, I can relate these values to the impact that I am making on an organization!

CHARITY MILES month of july

Charity Miles is one of the key club traditions<3 When I first noticed this event, I found it was so hard to believe that members could simply get volunteer hours and club credits just by walking? Although key club mainly focuses on in person events this service year, charity miles is still a lovely event that I always like to participate in:) This month, all of our miles go towards the NYDKC district project, Pencils of Promise. Pencils of Promise is a super caring non-profit organization that believes every child deserves access to quality education. They build schools and increase educational opportunities in the developing world. Join the tech key’s team now and start to walk!

I LOVE TO ATTEND KEY CLUB EVENTS!

On August 18th, I went to the Bronx Science Key Club’s August General meeting. One of their meeting games, a badminton tournament, really drew me in. Even though I'm not athletic, I enjoy sports. When I saw the advertising poster, I DM'd my friends right away. The weather that day was super nice warm, gentle breeze rustled the leaves and caressed my face… It blew away all of my anxieties and unhappiness… Despite the fact that I kept missing the ball, I was thrilled to be part of the event. Seeing the wide and beaming smile on the other member’ face brought me so much peace. Everyone there was incredibly supportive and polite; some of them even served as my "cheerleader" and "coach" during my competition<3 It was a very memorable Saturday this Summer. - Dong

The Coney Island event on August 19 was so much fun! It was thrilling to be on the rides and sometimes even just looking at some. Many members got on the Electro Spin, Luna 360, Steeplechase, and even the Slingshot. Personally, I am scared of heights but I did go on Steeplechase and it was so fun. Members were also able to buy snacks and photos around the park such as ice cream, funnel cakes, and even photos at the photo booths. As the 5 hours were coming to a close, we planned to walk down the boardwalk and onto the beach. By that time, the sun was setting and it was so pretty. It was a perfect way to end the event with the beautiful sunset and friends. - Chloey Lin

On August 19th, I attended the 5 Borough Amusement Park Fundraiser at Luna Park in Coney Island. This massive event which attracted Key Club members from all over the city was hands down one of the best fundraisers I have ever attended! Since the event was also open to people outside of Key Club, I was able to bring my younger brother and his friend as well. We all had a great time riding roller coasters on such a beautiful day! 19th, 2022

As soon as we got our wristbands, I rushed to all of my favorite rides in the park. I hadn’t ridden a roller coaster in a super long time and feeling that rush of excitement during a really big drop was exhilarating! Walking around the boardwalk after the dizziness of all those roller coasters was also really enjoyable as well. I got some food from Nathan’s and of course, had to try the delicious gelato they had! This event was nothing but fun! FUNDRAISER

On August 19, 2022, I attended our interclub amusement park fundraiser alongside key clubbers from Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Tottenville, and Bayside! Members from all across NYC came to enjoy a fun summer event filled with dozens of thrilling rides, mini games, snacks, and raffles. After helping our members check in for their wristbands, I met up with my friends to try and go on as many rides as we could! Throughout the day, I bumped into so many key clubbers and I loved seeing everyone gather on a nice summer day to support an amazing cause. My favorite part of the entire fundraiser was enjoying the beautiful Friday night fireworks at the boardwalk it was the perfect way to wind down after a long and exciting day. This event was perfect to end off a long summer, and I am so excited for our future fundraisers this service year.

The eagerly awaited Five Borough Amusement Park Fundraiser finally took place on August 19th! Surprisingly, we had over 600 signups, and over 500 people attended the event. I was already looking forward to visiting Coney Island when I heard about this exciting news. MOST SCARIEST THINGS ON EARTH. When I was seated in those red and orange chairs, my heart beat with such nervousness. While my friend cried "OH GOD HELP ME" on the 360, my tears flied out. Anyway, that day was such a kdrama day my friends and I went to the beach for the sunset until 9:00pm. While the fluffy cotton balls looking clouds drifted slowly across the sky, the last rays of the sun painted the sea with a hazy, golden mist...

I had so much fun at the Coney Island fundraiser on August 19. Although the day began with a rough start, with my train being delayed and my two hour train ride, I made it to the fundraiser only 15 minutes late. Before I headed to the line, I stopped at Starbucks to buy a grande strawberry acai because I knew I would definitely need an ice cold drink. After I bought my drink I met up with some friends and headed to the signin station to help with signins. Although the line was long at first, it began to decrease quickly and I eventually ended my shift and went into the amusement park. - Seraphina Ng PARK FUNDRAISER I met up with some of my friends in the theme park and followed them around before my friend, Chloe, and I went to buy some ice cream. After getting ice cream we decided to walk along the boardwalk before walking onto the pier. We finished our ice cream and watched as the hopes of originally optimistic fishers slowly disappeared when their lines came up with nothing. We eventually made it back and stopped in an arcade to play some games before making our way to Popeyes to meet up with our friends and grab a bite before heading back home. Thank you everyone for coming out and supporting our fundraiser! I hope you enjoyed and hope to see you at our future fundraisers!!

On August 20th, I attended the first advocacy event, the Vitals festival! Upon arrival, volunteers were able to help prepare for the festival by bringing out chairs, setting up tents, and bringing out stands for the musicians. Members were responsible for providing information about TDU, The Dream Unfinished, to locals walking around Jamaica Ave. We were able to express TDU’s goal through this organization, which was to bring awareness to social and racial injustice through classical music. There were also many other organizations there with their tables and they were called up one by one to explain what their organizations did, which helped everyone learn what each table was for. It was exciting to see so many people on the streets and stopping by each stand to learn more about the organizations. Best of all, there was music in the background and Chipotle to eat after! -

Unfortunately I couldn't find anything suitable for a large quantity of children so Yijin went the deli and chose a few packaged foods. Everything was going smoothly from there an the event was quickly over. I got some cherry snow cones before we finished packing up and shared them with some new friends I made! After a successful day of volunteering, we helped clean up, said goodbye, and then went back home!! Thank you to those who came and I hope to see you all at future events!!

august 20th, 2022 -

On August 20, I attended the NYSOM Back to School event with Yijin. Yijin picked me up and drove me to the NYSOM event. Although we were a little late, we made it and we got our roles quickly assigned. We were both assigned to the trivia station where if a child answers a superhero trivia question right, we give them a prize. It was a simple task, but we soon realized we would run out of prizes. We started trying to conserve our limited supply of prizes by being less lenient with the answers given and not allowing children to receive guidance from their parents. Even with our best efforts, we quickly ran out of prizes and the event host sent me to get more.

Seraphina Ng

“NYSoM” is my magic word. Maybe because it’s the first key club in person event that I attended? Perhaps their charitable mission of spreading love to children from low income families is what so profoundly affects my hear? Every time when key club cooperates with them, I’ll always twist around my schedule to ensure my availability for “NYSoM” events. This summer, they held “NYSoM Back To School” to hand out free school supplies to children. They had two shifts one on August 20th and the other on August 27th. Yes, I signed up for both. Even though it's getting close to fall, it was still super hot those two days. When I touched the volunteers’ tables, I though touched a hot pot filled with boiling water... OUCH! 20th + 27th, 2022 - Yijin Dong

Anyway, my role during both shifts was to organize the game station for “Superman & Captain American”. The rules were really straightforward: I would quiz the kids on the two movies, and if they correctly answered 2 out of 3 questions, they would receive a free present! Ngl… It was challenging to respond to the questions... What, for instance, was Captain America's birth name? My mouth wide opened when I saw the answer Steve Rogers. I had no clue who that was. However, I was surprised to see how many children and adults answered the questions correctly. The smiles on their faces and the laughing brightened my day!
