CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

BULLETIN EDITOR

MARIAE JULIA (MJ) ROBIS H ello fellow key clubbers!

This is probably the last year I'm going to do trick-or-treating as a teenager and that makes me sad. I didn't get as much candy as I used to because no matter how hard I try to avoid it, my motivation to ask every door for treats has decreased; that's how I realized that I am OLD..

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I don't really want this to be an upsetting rant about getting older but a warning to all of you youngins that time is shorter than we think and y'all should enjoy your adolescense! October has also been stressful due to the college apps which I still haven't started even though it's due in less than a month!! Another lesson to teach y'all is to not wait until last minute to do your college applications and pay attention to deadlines! Hopefully next year will be so much better for everyone! PRESIDENT'S REMARKS

CHIJIUN (APRIL) SU

elcome to the Key Club family! My name is April, your President for the 2018-2019 service year. The leaves are falling outside, which means it is the perfect time to head out to rake your neighborhood park or hand out flyers for a political campaign! I hope that throughout your time attending events this year, you will take all the opportunities Key Club offers to serve your community and become a better version of yourself. Key Club has been a huge part of my high school career. I served as an events committee member in my Sophomore year and the Junior School Services Committee Leader in my Junior year. But more importantly, beyond the scope of positions, Key Club has shaped my community and values. Through Key Club, I have found a close group of friends whom I attend events with and the desire to help those around me. The core values of Key Club are now inseparable elements of my life, and I have found that giving back to others has brought me more happiness than the entertainment, materialistic possession, and temporary destressors I preoccupied myself with before I started volunteering. So I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to be involved in Key Club on a deeper level and make sure other members for the 2018-2019 service year will have just as good experience as I did in Key Club. For the new service year, I will ensure that my club is providing the best service possible to its members and help my members find their passion to serve. For this service year, I am beyond excited to bring awareness to contemporary issues, such as climate change and animal rights, through our Key Club events. For the month of November, our theme of the month is Helping the Homeless. We have prepared plenty of opportunities for you to take part in. You can purchase a coat at Target for donation, or try help prepare meals for those in need at the village temple soup kitchen! And of course, we have our annual Fall Rally, where you get to meet Key Clubbers throughout New York! I hope you enjoy your time volunteering this month. Keep volunteering! Yours in Care and Service,

VICE PRESIDENT'S REMARKS

AYAN RAHMAN H

appy November everyone! October was SUCH an amazing month for key club. We had our club fair to recruit new members, our first meeting, Cancer Awareness Month, and so much more. I had a blast. To elaborate on everything, with the club fair and first meeting we've gotten a wave of interest from returning and new members alike. We've gotten over 700 people signed up for the club! That's AMAZING! Sharing the stage with other clubs at club fair and advocating for our organization was the most fun, and the receptive and open minded audience made it even better! In regards to Cancer Awareness month, which was jam packed, we had our annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Fundraiser, the Light the Night Walk, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, and two workshops for each type of cancer. There was so much awareness raised and so much action taken this month against pressing issues in our society, I'm so proud of our club already! With November, we're planning even more sweet surprises for you guys. The holidays are coming up and we're going to have the most fun our club has ever had. Yours in Caring Service, Ayan Rahman Vice Preisdent P.S. remember to pay dues and give in money for the LLS Fundraiser when the time comes around!

EVENTS

Š DEANNA SOUKHASEUM

This event was very touching because it brought together survivors, supporters, and family members. It feels good to know we're marching for a good cause. Even though it was cold and dark, so many people still came out early and stayed out late. It was truly amazing how lighting a lantern can make you feel. This event really showed how little things can spark happiness. Not everyone knows how it feels to be someone who survived from leukemia or lymphoma but everyone can relate to how it feels when you're close to losing something or someone important.

11

Nobody knows what's in store for us in the future so we should all do what we can to support each other and also enjoy the small things in life. When I heard the stories that were said on stage, it made me realize how lucky I am to not have to deal with this. It made me realize how life is so precious and it shouldn't be wasted. Lighting a lantern gives hope to everyone who has to conquer life's obstacles. No matter how big they are or how small they seem, each one is important. Each person is important. Each life is important. Give hope and love to those around you and know that no matter what you're dealing with... you're not alone. IRENE LIU

BREAST CANCER WALK

13

The walk gave me a sense of hope to our humanity. It was nice to see all these people of different ages, race, and gender, participate to support those who fight and fought bravely against cancer. Although the walk was a bit long, it was still an enjoyable time because I came with my friends from Key Club and it is for a great cause, I participated in two other walks before this but I would never have done it if it wasn't for Key Club. Key Club made me try new things and it taught me that it is worth trying new things as it teaches people how to care for others and be more understanding. ANONYMOUS

COLUMBUS DAY PARADE

The experience was amazing, and being able to see the spirit and hard work of the community to put this together was inspiring. Being a part of key club gave me and many other students the opportunity to help out. Many students were giving out flyers and supporting the community by either helping them set up or other helpful deeds. There were many other schools that were there to cheer and play instruments as support. The key club made it possible for the parade to be set up and cleaned up in records time. Not only did it feel good to help, but it was fun to be doing so with friends and other members. SUMYA SULTANA

As for my experience helping clean up Fort Green Park, I enjoyed it a lot. I was raking up leaves and putting them in trash bags with my teammates. It was satisfying in a weird way because there were so many dead leaves in the ground that we filled up several trash bags. You could see the contrast of color between green and gray from the areas that was raked and the areas that weren't. I got to meet a lot of new people and it felt good to cooperate together.
