PRESIDENT

CHIJIUN (APRIL) SU H

i everyone! My name is April and I am the President for the 2018-2019 service year. Three fun facts about me are: I care a lot about the environment, I do yoga every morning, and my favorite author is Haruki Murakami! Key Club has been a huge part of my high school career. I served as an events committee member in my Sophomore year and the Junior School Services Committee Leader in my Junior year. But more importantly, beyond the scope of positions, Key Club has shaped my community and values. Through Key Club, I have found a close group of friends whom I attend events with and the desire to help those around me. The core values of Key Club are now inseparable elements of my life, and I have found that giving back to others has brought me more happiness than the entertainment, materialistic possession, and temporary de-stressors I preoccupied myself with before I started volunteering. So I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to be involved in Key Club on a deeper level and make sure other members for the 2018-2019 service year will have just as good experience as I did in Key Club. For the new service year, I will ensure that my club is providing the best service possible to its members and help my members find their passion to serve.

3

My first plan is to improve the communication between the general members and the board by working with the webmaster to create an app that allows members to sign up for events with the click of just a button, so they no longer have to do the tedious task of filling out their information on Google forms. Secondly, I want to use the 2018-2019 service year to focus on Key Club International’s Major Emphasis, “Our Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” We will focus on helping high school students find their compassion to serve and lead by hosting workshops ranging from informational presentations on climate change to training workshops on public speaking. Thirdly, I want Key Club to further focus on making sure our members are doing meaningful service. Inspired by the contemporary events workshop at LTC and Erica Swirsky, I will declare at the beginning of each month a contemporary issue as the theme of the month. The club will host volunteering events pertaining to that topic for the rest of the month, as well as workshops. The themes of the month will encourage members to do more meaningful work, expand their perception of the world, and help them start their own initiatives!

VICE PRESIDENT

AYAN RAHMAN H

i everyone! My name is Ayan Rahman, and I have the honor and privilege of serving as your Vice President this next service year. Last year, I worked as your Bulletin Editor. I was the one who made these newsletters, maintained the social media, and made all the graphics. As I pass the torch down to MJ, I couldn't be more ecstatic as I can't think of a better person to take my job! For this next service year, we're going to work towards building Key Club's presence further within the school as well as give you guys even greater opportunities to develop your skills as leaders by improving committees, hosting in school workshops, and more. I can't wait to see what next year holds in store for us. Until then, enjoy your summer, and don' forget about Key Club! We will still be holding events for you guys to enjoy if you're around over these next few months. Looking forward to next year! Yours in Care and Service, Ayan Rahman

We had also received a lot of other club awards such as the District Fundraising Awards, Perfect Paperwork Award, and many other awards. It was a memorable night with joy.

Overall, it was an unforgettable three days. I’m so proud of the accomplishment we achieved, and I believed that the new board will made more progress next year! QIANTING CHEN

FEED THE CATS

I like animals, and I think most people do as well, so when I got the opportunity to feed cats, I jumped on it immediately. I chose to be the captain of the event, though I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to do everything by myself, because I was the only volunteer to come that day. But with the help of the amazing lady who feeds the cats by herself everyday I think we did a good job.In total, there were 19 cats, with 2 of them being kittens. I was very upset to find out that one of the kittens had a broken femur from jumping from a really high place. The other cats all had very distinct personality, and even if

15

I’m not a cat owner myself, I think some of the cats liked me. Although most of the cats would just ignore me, there was one named Fatima, who was really friendly. She rubbed herself against my leg after I petted her a few times, and I thought that was really sweet. What most surprised me was the amount of work the lady who feeds the cats had to do just to feed each cat. I helped with the cats’ lunch/dinner, and that took 2 hours! That lady told me

that she had to do that everyday, and I was amazed. First, we

sorted out all of the packaged foods, of which there were at least a hundred of. Then, she would old and tie each of at least 10

plastic bags in a way so that each one could be transported easily once full of dry cat food and so that cats couldn’t get their heads stuck in them. I would then fill each of those bags with cat food and tie them up as well. After the dry food was ready, we would move on to canned food, and I helped to open enough cans for about 10 plates of food. DAVID BEKER

FRIDAYÂ VOLUNTEER CORPS

Volunteering in Fort Greene is an event I sign up for regularly. I consider myself an environmental advocate as I do anything that will potentially lead to the sustainability of our environment. In Friday Volunteer Corps, volunteers spend around an hour just helping out in Fort Greene Park; sometimes, we pull out weeds and other times, we rake. It's one of the many events that members can definitely fit in their schedule as it is located right in front of Brooklyn Tech and it happens every Friday. I recommend everyone to sign up for it!

INDUCTION 2018

My experience at Key Club’s induction was different from most social gatherings I’ve been to, in a good way. Like a lot of people, I’m not exactly a party person, but I felt comfortable at the induction. Everyone was friendly, and it was really welcoming. It was a good time. In the beginning, a bag of candy was passed around for people to take. Unknowingly, the people who took the most candy had to stand up and tell things about themselves. That was a clever icebreaker, and I think it was a nice way to start off the induction. It was a little awkward talking to people I didn’t know at first, but people do people things, and we warmed up to each other. At one point, we played a round of Kahoot about Key Club, and it was great. (We didn’t win. We weren’t close at all.) Socializing aside, we also listened to people speak about their past experiences with Key Club and how it affected them, and it was nice to hear that Key Club was gratifying and that people were helping others for the sake of helping rather than points. The old board bid their farewells, and the new board was announced, me being one of the new board members. It was a little exciting to see who was chosen and who I would be working with, and the paper that said my name filled my heart with so much happiness. My dad saw the silver certificate, and he just grunted, but I knew he was proud. Typical dad. Near the end, one member, MJ, sang a beautiful song, and it was a lovely way to end the induction. Everything was so pleasant, and I really enjoyed it. I felt a little bad for my friends, who decided not to go, because I felt that they missed out. The induction is an experience that I won’t forget.

Memorial Day Parade Memorial Day is an event that is a little special to me because it’s the first event I went to as your event coordinator. It was the first memorial parade I’ve attended and I was happy to honor everyone who has served for our country. In this event, I met two Kiwanis members and they were both very friendly. One of them promised to get us a banner which

he did and the other had a car from the 80s which we had a chance to “ride” as we wait for the event to start. Another thing that made it special is that it’s the first event where more than one executive showed up! With that being said, I hope that more members and executives attend future events because I have been to most and it’s not really that hard!

@ bayside high schoolÂ

This has been my first DTC ever but since I went to LTC last March, I felt very comfortable with most of the people who attended. I was so happy that DTC took place in Bayside High School since it’s only 30 minutes away from my house; living in Queens is hard when most of the events I go to is in Brooklyn. Because I didn’t have to take a long commute, I had more sleep and I didn’t feel as tired as those who had an hour or two of train ride. On the first workshop session of the day, I learned many tips on how to do well as a Bulletin Editor for the new service year; I even learned a thing or two about being a Webmaster since the workshop was hosted by District Editor Fahad and District Webmaster Unice. They ended the workshop by sharing with us the resources which would be useful in our respective roles. "They ended the workshop by sharing with us the resources which would be useful in our respective roles"

On the second workshop, I attended Self-Defense and it was very entertaining! I expected to learn moves that I already knew but the speaker taught other cool moves that will surely help me in real-life dangerous situations. In the last ten minutes, however, I hopped on to another workshop (Surviving Stressful Situations) because I didn’t have a partner to do the moves with in the SelfDefense workshop. The pizza was great (I HAD THREE!) and the speaker who talked about bullying really managed to make me scream YES or NO every 10 seconds. Lastly, Breakdance workshop was A1! Not because I knew most of the moves and I LOVE BREAKDANCING but because I had a chance to help educate others to learn the art of breakdance! MJ ROBIS

FESTIVAL

The Tuffy Tiger Fest takes place every year and is run by a nonprofit puppetry organization whose key component is its Tuffy the Tiger puppet. Usually the fest runs an entire block, accompanied by bouncy castles and various attractions for kids. This year, however, rain was anticipated so the fest was limited to the center of Washington park near the Old Stone House. A stage was set up for the puppetry and two fairytale shows were presented for an audience of parents and children of ages ranging from as small as 1 to

21

as old as 11. After the show was over, two separate puppet masters led a mini show just for the kids. The parents and their kids could then proceed to the arts and crafts tables where the volunteers were assigned to work by the organizer. The first table had a spin the wheel and a few of the volunteers were in charge of it. They would distribute the prize to the child. The second table contained arts and crafts such as an R2D2 cutout which the volunteers helped to cut out and distribute as well as a tuffy the tiger cutout which would later be made into a puppet. Children used crayons

to color the puppets and found much joy in doing so. Looking at the volunteers, I saw how much fun they were having interacting with little kids. Right from the start, they were so passionate and had so much energy. They came ready to spread and share joy with others. Even until the last moment when we were closing the set up, they still wanted to continue helping out. I’ve never seen these volunteers in school before and without key club, I probably would not have met them. I’m so glad that key club gave me the opportunity to meet these people while volunteering.

DIVISIONAL NEWS DIVISION 9

Hey Brooklyn Tech! Division 9 is having a very busy year so far! We held a bake sale to fundraise for our division banner and if you haven’t seen it yet, it is so beautiful! The banner gives us sharks a sense of pride when we walk with it and I’m proud of the division. We had tons of successful events and we even have an upcoming fundraiser, which you should totally go to! We had over 20 members go to the annual Leadership Training Conference, isn’t that crazy? For an event costing over 300 dollars, the turn out was amazing and the attendees who came? Even better. I have had the pleasure to meeting groups of key clubbers from each school as I came to do weekly check ins and every school is filled with such wonderful people my heart is warm rethinking of those moments. Can you believe we had a similar turn out at the District Training Conference, located in DEEP Queens? Key Club is full of dedicated people and learning experiences ready for you. I hope the more you have fun in key club, the more you learn! About who we are, what this organization is about, and maybe throw in some fun facts about me and your board! I look forward to the future and working together with everyone!
