Hey Key Clubbers! Hope you have all been having an amazing summer, I know I have! My name is Ayan, and I'll be your Editor for the next service year! My job will be to make newsletters, like this one, every month to update you all on what we have been up to as a club on the grass roots level as well as higher up on the divisional and district, and sometimes even international level! Newsletters will also include future events, games, articles, and so much more, so I hope you have just as much fun looking through them as I have while making them! Summer has been a blast, whether it be while vacationing with friends and family, doing summer programs, or even volunteering with Key Club every once in a while. Unlike other clubs, Key Club ran through the summer, and it was honestly so much fun! With the future year coming up, I wish you all a happy and prosperous time in and outside of school. Be sure you make the best of your time in Key Club! Yours in Caring Service, Ayan Rahman 2017-2018 BTHSKC Editor

Please feel free to contact me at anytime with any questions or concerns."

editor Ayan Rahman Hey! It's me again! I wanted to take this section to talk about my future plans and aspirations for the coming year. I really want to have fun with these newsletters and make it so that you guys can look through them and feel as if you're a part of a community, because you are! I want newsletters, social media posts, and digital posters (all things I'm forced to make by our lovely president) to bring about excitement and motivation for all of us, as members of the community, to engage ourselves in service and give back. The newsletters I publish will not just be mine, but rather a collection of all the great work you all put into our club, I'm merely the person publishing this stuff. So in other words, this is a plea for help. I won't be able to do this on my own. Send in articles, photos, and anything and everything you can to show ur engagement in the community this year! I can't wait for it to begin already!

Key Club Induction A MAGICAL NIGHT JUNE 14, 2017 HOWONG SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

KEY CLUB INDUCTION To kick off the summer, we started with Key Club Induction, a  truly magical night. It took place at Howong Seafood Restaurant In Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. It was bittersweet, but overall very enjoyable for all Key Clubbers. We started with games such as, "Guess that Song" and "Key Club Trivia" which gave members the opportunity to win some sweet prizes. That was followed with A LOT of food that filled us all up.  But it was after all of that when the splurge of erratic emotions occurred, We proceeded with emotional reflections on Key Club by immediate past board members such as President Elaine, Vice President Winnie, And Secretary Yanan. A recurring theme in their words was how Key Club had changed their lives, it got everyone In the crowd grabbing tissues. As the night progressed, many awards were given out for outstanding work done by specific members. And by the end, the old exec and cabinet board had finally retired and the torch was passed down to the new boards. It was a night of celebration and tears alike, but one thing that all Key Clubbers got out of it was the pure joy in experiences that Key Club brings to our lives. It marked an end of an era, but a start of a new one as well.

s i n a w i K Don't just talk the talk, but walk the walk! Key Clubbers had the opporunity to walk the walk against bullying in this Division Wide event, with fellow Kiwanis representatives and members of other divisions. We all met up in City Hall Park, where we got special t-shirts for the specific event, and after snapping a quick photo, we were on our way. After walking across the bridge, we all took a seat on the steps of borough hall, where we listened to reps from Kiwanis

talk about their experiences with bullying, and how detrimental it was to their lives. Although the stories were heartbreaking, we were there to contribute to the end of bullying, so we made signs and sang chants and all gathered around in our mini community of Key Clubbers.

"Being apart of the first Kiwanis Anti-Bullying walk was such an empowering experience. It was amazing to be among people who are just as passionate to bring about an end to bullying. The day was a strong reminder that words matter, so be kind to everyone!!"

FUN AT DIVISIONAL TRAINING CONFERENCE! DTC was the biggest gathering of all key clubbers from across the city since Fall Rally back in November! The LTG's from Divison 8-12 worked long and hard in finding a venue, planning speeches, food, and workshops. And in the end, it was just amazing what they pulled off! It began with the LTG's greeting us and then us being sent off to our first workshops. Depending on what position you have in Key Club, from a member to a president, you had a specific workshop in which you received training for your position. There were two other fun groups workshops after that followed by lunch.

. ..... ......

However, the real fun began when we had K-fair, where everyone gathered together in the lunch hall. We played a bunch of games and had the opportunities to make connections among people from all over the city!

sUMMER DIVISIONAL!

Pool Party @ Gioia's place!

08/12/17 Summer Divisional time! And it was our favorite divisional of all-Mr.Gioia's pool party! It was quite an adventure, like literally an adventure. Getting to Whitehall Street to meet up, waiting to get on the ferry, getting on the ferry, getting off the ferry, and then taking the Staten Island Railroad, and then walking all the way to Mr.Gioia's house way deep into the borough. But all of that adventure was worth it when we got there. What made this specific divisional the best of all was the fact that it was joined with the Staten Island division. After club updates, we got a chance to take a dip in the pool, have Mr.Gioia's wife's AMAZING cooking, and talk to Key Clubbers from all across Staten Island and Brooklyn.

"On August 12th, our key club division had its annual pool party at Mr.Gioas house. Key members from various schools gathered to celebrate this end of the year event. Ms. Gioa served everyone delicious food and we all enjoyed the party. It was a great chance for fellow key members to meet other amazing members through this JIN HAO QIU gathering."

BACKPACKS FOR KIDS!

23

08/24/17

On August 24th, Key Clubbers from Division 9 got together in New Utrecht, Brooklyn to help out Reaching Out Community Services in it's efforts to give away free school supplies to low-income families. The line for supplies stretched ALL the way around the block. With warm smiles on their faces, our members handed out supplies and backpacks to children of all ages. It was probably one of the most meaningful events of this summer. And the best part is that the organizers invited us back again for their Christmas Bash! So be on the lookout for that!

Kiwanis

Kiwanis family picnic September 2, 2017

To wrap up the summer, the entire K family got together for their annual picnic at Prospect Park, to celebrate all the fun we had together for summer 2k17. We all gathered together to have A LOT of food and get to know each other a little better. FOr many of us, it was the first time meeting each other, People brought in board games, chess, card games and much more. And of course, no family picnic would be complete without pieing people in the faces. So by the end, the LTG's had whipped cream to lick off their faces. And as per usual, a ton of group photos were taken of our photogenic membership.

"The k-family picnic allowed us all to get back together with our key club friends from across New York city. BEST WISHES FOR THE JOURNEY AHEAD!

29

Before the year starts, some special people wanted to wish us the best of luck, and talk about their inspirational stories in Key Club. These people were the true all-stars of their times and made incredible impacts on the club, to make it the way it is today. For this, it was essential to get them on this issue of the newsletter.

And with that, presenting the Executive Board of the 2016-2017 service year!

Immediate Pres

Hello Brooklyn Tech Key Club! My name is Elaine Pun and I had the honor of having served as your Immediate Past President. My journey in Key Club actually started in a different school. I attended Leon M. Goldstein High School on Kingsborough Community College campus in my freshmen year where I first paid my Key Club membership dues. The difference was the fact that we paid $14 and had no volunteer opportunities outside of school except for writing cards to veterans and making posters. This made me reluctant to join Brooklyn Tech's Key Club but as you can tell, I took the chance anyway.

Sophomore year in Key Club was a blast! I had something other than academics to focus on and this was something fun as well. Volunteering allowed me to feel proud of myself because I knew my actions can directly effect the people around me, in my community. That feeling was so humbling I knew I wanted to do more and so I ran for Secretary that year. Needless to say, I did not do well on my speech. I stumbled, couldn't pronounce my words properly, and lost the election. That experience taught me to never give up and never stop looking forward. I never once held grudges because I didn't find the point in doing so. At the end of the day, I loved community service and I knew I wanted to do more than just be a member. In the coming year, I focused on growing my experiences from multiple clubs, getting leadership experience, and working on my public speaking skills to do the best I can for the next election.

31

Past

ident In conclusion, it was a hell of a ride to get where I wanted to be. I still feel like I could have done better for my club and myself but I am content, happy, and extremely satisfied with my team and how much we've changed Brooklyn Tech Key Club because this will be the foundation for many years to come. I want to encourage all members to not only participate in events and do service, but to also look into running for committee leader and executive officer. These positions are what will help aid your abilities to lead, ability to work with others in a team, and help you learn more about yourself so you can self-improve. You don't have to worry about not having experience as long as you have passion for the club, serving, and willingness to learn. I am a strong believer that you will learn something from all of your experiences, big or small, and that you will learn nothing by just sitting there and not putting yourself in uncomfortable situations. When you do something you fear, you will wonder why you feared it in the first place. Good luck and I wish for another success year for Brooklyn Tech Key Club!

Immediate Past Vice-President

Hey everyone! I am the immediate past Vice-President! When I think of Key Club, I think of my high school experience and vice versa. It started as a way to do something on the weekends with my friends but it became so much more. I discovered my passion for volunteering and i met so many amazing friends. I ended up running for club secretary and serving as the secretary in my junior year. I was able to network, attend many fun enriching events, and all the while noticing personal growth within me. I became so much better at public speaking. In my senior year, i served as the vicepresident and I am so proud of what my executive board and our members accomplished. I hope you join Key Club in this service year and continue to make changes, meet new people, and try new things. If you stay in Key Club, you’ll realize how amazing of a club it truly is.

Winnie Chen Immediate Past Vice-President BTHS Class of 2017 George Washington University Class of 2021

Immediate Past Secretary To be frank, I never would have imagined the measure of Key Club’s influence on my life when I initially joined. What I first sought out as a medium I could utilize to gain more volunteer hours and club credits quickly fathomed into this family I never thought I would be a part of. The things they tell you about Key Club are true — you do get to make your community a better place, you do get to polish and expand your leadership and professional skills, and you do get those credits and letters you were promised. All those things are amazing things, but something you might not think you would get out of your personal Key Club experience is a family. Your bonds with fellow Key Clubbers does not cease to exist once the Key Club chapter of your lives is over; I can proudly say that 95% of my friends are/were Key Clubbers, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. To all prospective new members: Sure, Key Club is here for you to grow as a leader and take on new volunteering experiences. However, it is up to you how you wish your Key Club experience to turn out, and trust me, if you do take the extra leap, whether it be simply sparking up a conversation or even running for office, you will find yourself to be surrounded by a closeknit family that stays with you for a lifetime. Best wishes to the new executive board, and I hope this new service year will be brimming with new opportunities and new beginnings!

A SPECIAL KEY CLUB STORY OUR OWN CYNTHIA JIANG'S SUCCESS STORY Hello Key Clubbers, My name is Cynthia Jiang and I am the Immediate Past Distinguished New York District Key Club Treasurer. As many of you may know, Key Club provides its members with multiple opportunities to not only serve the community, but also to serve one another. I joined Key Club my freshman year of high school because I heard my own sister tell me about how much Key Club had changed her life. However, like many of you, the main factor that pushed me to join Key Club was the offer of receiving both volunteer hours and club credits. After four year in highschool, I can truly say that my decision to join Key Club is one that I would never change. My first year in Key Club was, surprisingly, a bit disappointing. I knew high schools around the city had very active Key Clubs, but Brooklyn Tech’s Key Club was not as active as I hoped it would be. By the end of the year, I decided to run for an executive position. I chose to do so because I truly thought that I could be a part of the change. Many of you are probably thinking about how intimidating it is for a freshman to run against upperclassmen for an executive position and let me tell you - it was. It was was without a doubt one of the most daring decisions I made in high school, but at the same time, one of the most rewarding decisions. My sophomore year was the highlight of my high school career. As secretary, I did not only meet upperclassmen who got me through my stressful junior and senior year, but I also created friendships that I know will continue to be with me in the future. Being the only sophomore on the executive board gave me many opportunities to learn from people who have already gone through what I would in the following years. I got involved in school and established relationships with the Key Club advisors and many faculty members. A very successful year with friends to guide me along the way inspired

me to use what I learned throughout the year to lead others. This motivated me to run for higher office at the end of sophomore year for Brooklyn Tech Key Club President. When preparing my speech for president, I did not want it to be cliche, I did not want to make promises I might not be able to keep. Instead, I chose to write a motivational speech, one where my own personal experiences were evidence as to what Key Club is and can do. When receiving the phone call announcing that I had received the position as Brooklyn Tech Key Club’s first junior president, I knew I was ready for this role. After three years in Key Club and two executive positions, I wanted to experience life of Key Club outside Brooklyn Tech. This was when I decided to leave the nest and run for a district position. Speaking in front of classmates was one thing, speaking in front of adults and students from all over the state and asking them to support you was another. After a weekend of speeches and questions, I sat in the my seat Sunday afternoon waiting for three hours to hear the results of the election. Nothing in those three hours registered in my mind. All I did was sit in my seat and squeezed Elaine’s hand. When my name was called there were absolutely no words to express that moment. However, this next part is what Key Club does for you. When the ceremony ended and all the retired officers were crying, I saw this one body heading my way. Within a second I was hugging Elaine and we were crying tears of joy, tears of excitement! All she could say between the sobs were how proud she was of me and how far of a way I had came to that day. If you are still reading this, I need you to keep this in mind. If you do not remember anything else from this reflection, remember this: Key Club WILL become your home, your family, and your safe haven. You will have people there with you along the way to support you and help you make right choices. The only thing is, YOU have to be willing to make that first step. To all Key Clubbers out there, DO NOT be afraid to spread your wings a little bit and do not ever forget that you need to work hard to make your dreams come true.

SOOO... what exactly

IS DIVISION 9? 36

Key Club and it's work extends far further than just Brooklyn Tech. It is something that is found in almost ANY high school you visit. It's when all these Key Clubs come together when the term "division" comes into play. Read our LTG's description on what our division is below! Division 9 is the Brooklyn Division of the mighty New York District, and consists of nine Key Clubs. We have a divisional board which consists of Lieutenant Governor (LTG) Patricia Ahmed and Executive Assistant (EA) Josephine Wu. An EA essentially acts as the LTG’s right hand, assisting in contacting club boards, planning events, and providing resources for membership growth and retention. Every month, Patricia hosts divisionals, which are essentially like a Key Club meeting, but all clubs are in attendance. Divisionals usually take place at one of the schools a part of the division. At divisionals, Patricia shares both district and division updates, and review past and upcoming events. Divisionals are a great opportunity to meet clubs from across Brooklyn, and make friends!

PAT & D I V I S

Hi Brooklyn Tech Key Club!

COR

My name is Patricia Ahmed, and I am serving as your Division 9 Lieutenant Governor for the 2017-2018 service year. Essentially, a Lieutenant Governor acts as a liaison, relaying information from the New York District Board back to the division. I oversee nine clubs in total, which means I work with the club boards to make sure everything's running smoothly. I am currently a senior attending James Madison High School, and I joined Key Club in my sophomore year. The first event I attended was a local Fall Festival that my school helps with annually. There, we got to dress up in costumes, help set up a pumpkin patch, sponsorship tents, a “graveyard”, and hand out candy to kids. Being able to be a part of bringing an event to life and putting smiles on faces motivated me to stay in Key Club. As president of my club last year, I expanded my knowledge by learning and helping others, and making several friends along the way. Key Club has taught me that the simplest actions can make the biggest impacts, and I want to continue to change the world, one act of kindness at a time. If you ever need someone to talk to about Key Club or life in general, please feel free to contact me! Hey Brooklyn Tech Key Club! My name is Josephine Wu and I am serving as your Executive Assistant of Division 9 for this service year. I assist Patricia through various tasks, whether it is collecting articles for our newsletter, updating the division calendar, finding events, or helping club officers. Essentially, I serve as the “vice president” of our division. My Key Club story is somewhat similar to many. I first joined in my sophomore year due to influence from our immediate past Lieutenant Governor, Raymond, and my wonderful treasurer, Lillian. Although I wasn’t really sure what to expect, I did learn quickly that we would not be making keys. Eventually, volunteering became a hobby of mine. It was also quite fitting, because I’ve always been willing to meet and help others in any way that I can. After a period of dedication and then a hiatus, I decided to apply for officer positions and was appointed secretary of Midwood Key Club and Executive Assistant. You may be surprised to hear this, but Brooklyn Tech has the largest Key Club of Division 9, and the New York District! With almost 400 members, there are so many opportunities and possibilities for service. I hope all of you continue on your journey and find Key Club to be so much more than an extracurricular activity. Through Key Club, I have met amazing people, developed my leadership skills, and discovered something that is just as good as sleeping in or watching Netflix. Although we are all high school students, there is so much more to life than school, and other concerns besides ourselves. We don’t make keys, but we do make a difference. If you have ever need someone to talk for anything at all, I’m here! I’m not scary and I promise that I will respond to you. I wish you all the best school and service year yet! josephinewu.ea@gmail.com // 646-509-6068

BOTTLE RUN! TO PROMOTE RECYCLING!

Throughout the summer, at every event, an exec was present to collect plastic bottles brought in by members. Many of us are guilty of purchasing bottles of water and then just throwing them out. What we don't know is where these bottles end, and that's landfills and the ocean for marine animals to accidentally eat and get trapped in. To spread awareness on this, and put in our two cents to help, we collected every bottle from members that would eventually end up in places like landfills and the oceans So far we've collected 298 bottles! Keep up the great work!
