Fall Group Up Clean Up

On Saturday, November 7th, 2015, Key Clubbers were mulching, bulb planting, and cleaning up Washington Square Park from 8:40A.M to 11:00A.M. Volunteers met up for a quick orientation and were grouped at different sites around the park. Tasks were dependent on what the park needed most that day. Our dear Key Clubber Katherine Luong, was the project captain and did a terrific job taking pictures and managing the other Key Clubbers!

Miscellaneous Stuff

The bulletin board is up!! Check it out in front of the elevator at the NW side of the first floor! The holiday party will be in December so please keep an eye out for that! It’s only $3 and there will be pizza, soda, chips, and cake! There will also be performances by Cynthia and Kate (immediate past treasurer) and Jasper and Sandy (immediate past bulletin editor)!

Thank you for helping!! During this time of year, we remember to be thankful for so many things. Volunteering for a couple of hours at the animal shelter each month or making cards for troops overseas may hardly feel like you’re making an impact on the world, but you truly are. Little by little, you're making the world a better place and we couldn't be more thankful to call you a member of Key Club.

{GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON} November and December are two of the most popular months to volunteer. That’s a good thing because this is also a time of year when many people and groups need the most help. The project ideas listed below might not be new to you, but their impact on others is something worth repeating. Here are some fun twists on classic holiday projects.

PLAYFUL PLACEMATS If your club serves holiday meals at a soup kitchen, go a step further: Design and donate fun placemats for kids to use during their meals. Include spaces for games of tic-tac-toe, pictures to color or words of inspiration. Get some bonus points by giving each child a small box of crayons too.

SERVICE SCULPTURES Anyone can collect canned food and place it into a barrel, but it takes talent to create a miniature baseball stadium or castle out of those cans. Take your food drive to the next level by hosting a canned food sculpture contest. Challenge students from different classrooms or grades to build the best sculptures, and let fellow classmates and school faculty “vote” for their favorites by dropping money into a bucket near each masterpiece. Donate the collected food and money to your favorite food bank or shelter.

WARM WISHES During most coat drives, there isn’t much work needed other than collecting donated coats and taking them to a drop-off center. Get more involved by making a scarf to donate with each coat. All you need is a long, narrow piece of fleece and scissors to cut fringe on each end. {STRESSED IS JUST DESSERTS SPELLED With finals and holidays with families on the horizon, there are quite a few things that may stress you out this time of year. Luckily, we have a few tricks to relieve some of that pressure. There’s an infinite number of things that can trigger stress. Some of the most common stressors for teens include family problems, grades, friends, body image, romantic relationships, bullying and money. Stress isn’t always a bad thing, but too much can certainly lead to other problems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stress is the reason for up to 90 percent of all medical visits. If you’re feeling frazzled, you’re not the only one. Here are a couple of ways you can minimize your stress levels. TAKE CONTROL OF THOSE TASKS When it seems like you have a million things to do, make a to-do list. Writing down what’s bouncing around in your head might help you realize that what you thought was an endless list of tasks is only a list of 10.  If you like crossing things off, simply make a list in your agenda or notebook.  If you need visual cues to stay organized, color coordinate your tasks. SPREAD SOME CHEER Last year, Key Club teamed up with Project Happiness, a nonprofit organization that inspires and empowers people to create greater happiness within themselves and their communities. The resources Project Happiness provide are based on neuroscience, positive psychology and mindful awareness. Learn more about Project Happiness and use its resources today! What has Key Club been up to?

{JUNIORS AND SENIORS} From our lovely President, Cynthia Hello my Upperclassmen, Wondering what your treat is? Key Club and Brooklyn Tech have decided to collaborate on the Little Sib and Big Sib idea. The Little Sib and Big Sib for KEY CLUB will be coming out in the next few weeks so hang tight for that. HOWEVER, I was planning on making this mandatory for all my Juniors and Seniors in Key Club but I want you guys to be able to do this on your own free will. This is what was posted on the school website. Please read it thoroughly: "Brooklyn Tech is beginning a new mentoring program where upper classmen mentor incoming freshman students. Coming to BTHS is an honor, but for some, quite unnerving. Big Sibs help freshmen transition into our community. We will provide training to those selected. Big Sibs will earn 16 CREDITS for this school year. BTHS is accepting applications to our new Big Sibs Program! · Attend bi monthly meetings · Be available to be a “Big Sib” to your mentee when times get tough · Earn 16 credits for the year (equal to NHS, NSBE, etc.) · Must have a minimum GPA of 75 · Must be a Junior or Senior" - You will ONLY be meeting every TWO months. That's less than Key Club meetings. The main idea of this program in BROOKLYN TECH (not key club) is that you will be available to a Freshmen. You do not have to teach them anything or talk to them 24/7; that's not how it works. You just have to be there for them. Be that person whom they can turn to and talk to. They may just want some advice such as "what's the best way to get to class" or "how do you navigate in the school", questions like that. - The best part about this is that you will be earning 16 extra credits just by giving advice to someone. You will also be getting Key Club points for being a part of this. For every semester you are a big sib, you will be earning +25pts. That's +75pts JUST FOR BEING AVAILABLE TO SOMEONE!!! ALL THE EXECS AND COMMITTEE LEADERS (except our lovely jasper) WILL BE A BIG SIB AS WELL!! If we can take on this role, so can you guys!!!!
