A Note From The Editor Hey everyone, Wow! It's been a long first month, but we got through it! I was so pleased during this time because I got to meet so many new people who wanted to join in on the Key Club Initiative. I'm proud to say we currently have more than 700 members signed up! This month, we got to participate in many volunteering opportunities, but also bond with our Division 9 friends . With the start of the new school year, everyone was more ready than ever to do well. I'm so excited for the coming year and what it has to offer. Although, with all the stress from school, it seems like Key Club and friends and family are all I look forward to. Having these three things besides me gets me through my misery on many days, and acts as my coping method. And I'm sure all of us know that having those are necessary at Tech. Whatever your methods may be, always have them ready because this year will be tough, but equally as enjoyable. I'm running out of things to say. But honestly, the greatest message I can give you all at this point is to try and live in the moment. Soak in all the experiences and have fun! The times we spend in Key Club, and just high school in general, are rather short. So make good use of it and enjoy! Happy Key Clubbing! PRESIDENT'S REMARKS

Hey Key Clubbers, Congratulations on getting through your first month of school! We hope that you’ve all settled in by now! School can be stressful, no matter if you are a freshman trying to find your way around, or if you are a senior working on college apps. If you are feeling anxious try taking a break, attend an event over the weekend. It’ll loosen you up and help you relax. We have several upcoming events that are super fun and engaging, so make sure to check your email. If you ever need advice on anything (not just about Key Club) don’t be afraid to reach out! Other than that, happy Key Clubbing! Yours in Caring Service, Kathy Song

VICE PRESIDENT'S REMARKS Hey guys Happy fall!!! I hope you guys are FALLING in love with Key Club over the past couple months. That was a bad pun, but I genuinely hope everyone is finding their passion for service through the first few events in the school year. My personal favorite event in September was the Hunger Walk. Hunger Walk is one of the many division events we volunteer in and it's always such a blast volunteering with my friends from other school. You guys should take opportunity of all the division events we have throughout the year. Go division 9!! Yours in Caring Service, Ziyin Zhen

FRIENDSHIP MEMBER PICNIC! Spotlights Sheep Meadows, Central Park to come!

September 10, 2017

Our first interclub of the service year was with Midwwod High School, and it couldn't have been any better!

During the first day of the Brooklyn Tech x Midwood Interclub event, members were given the opportunity to interact with those of other clubs.

It took place at Central Park, and we were joined by friends from other Key Clubs across the city.

Members took part in several activities including icebreakers, sight seeing, and classic games.

While there, we had good food, listened to music, played icebreakers like soulmate, and more.

During this time, members also enjoyed great food and got the chance to truly communicate with one another. Members not only used this time to have fun, but also to give back unto the community.

The event marked the start of many friendhsips as well as many Key Club events

12

Nearly every member in attendance brought either clothes and/or non-perishable food items to donate to victims of Hurricane Harvey. All in all, it was a great day and members had a terrific time.

Nana-Osei Adjepong BTHS Key Club Treasurer Members had an awesome time together at the Midwood X Brooklyn Tech Friendship Event that took place at Sheep Meadows, Central Park. We got to indulge ourselves in good food, play fun games, get to know each other, and

more! In addition to having fun ourselves, we tried our best in helping our community in two ways. Almost all members brought in nonperishables and clothes for a Hurricane Harvey Relief Drive. We also participated in a park cleanup. In doing so, we also collected bottles for the BTHS Key Club Bottle Run! Overall, this event was a great experience for members to engage themselves in the Key Club community by meeting new friends from Midwood as well as Tech!

XAVIER MISSION SOUP KITCHEN!

Xavier Mission Soup Kitchen September 17, 2017

After leaving Xavier Mission Soup Kitchen, our bodies were aching. This was perhaps one of the most difficult of events in terms of the tolls it took on our bodies. However, all of this could be forgotten after seeing the looks on the faces of the people we helped.

We took part in Xavier Mission's initiative in helping the poor get back on their feet. It was one which made all the service work we do as Key Clubbers make sense.

While serving food and taking orders, paying careful attention to what each individual wanted,

we got to understand the stories and backgrounds of each person. Listening to what each of them had to say was quite touching. All of us were scrambling, trying to make things run as efficiently as possible. There were some of us washing dishes, others putting dishes on the serving belt, people asking visitors what they wanted to eat, members serving food, and more. Overall, this was a truly meaningful event, as we got to witness, firsthand, the lasting impact we leave on our communities as a result of service work. We are excited to work with Xavier Mission, or any other soup kitchen, in the future!

MEMBER

Spotlight

I believe a small gesture, like a pebble dropped in a lake, can create a ripple effect and bring great change. The staff at Xavier Mission Soup Kitchen reach out and try to bring forth this change by feeding the homeless, and being a part of that was an amazing feeling. Notably, Key Club served chicken, rice, and sweet bread to the homeless and cleaned up afterwards. Some members were assigned to wash dishes, while others focused on waiting on people. However, whatever we did, we worked as a team to get the assigned task done. I remember exchanging smiles or a few words with some of the men and women while serving them and I realized that this was one of the only times these people actually felt

15

like they were being taken care of. According to Coalition for the Homeless, in August 2017 there were 61,471 homeless people in the New York City municipal shelter system. When people walk the streets of our city, they usually focus on where their going and not at the person begging next to them. When you stop and try to help that person, the feeling is one almost unexplainable.

the hunger

walk

SEPTEMBER 23, 2017 NEW UTRECHT, BKLYN

The 9th Annual Walk Against Hunger was an

amazing experience! We got to work closely

with Reaching Out Community Services, once

again, in an effort to help the community fight

against hunger. The event had lots of parts to it

- each of them being equally as fun in their

own way. We began with a little gathering with

everyone in the New Utrecht community where

kids got to color, people ate food, there were

rides, and much more. I even got to dress up as

a minion with Ziyin in the scorching sun! It was

a fun way to interact with the tight knit

community of passionate people.

Then came the actual walk. I walked, in my hot

minion suit, holding Patricia's hand as a guide.

She was my set of eyes. There were people

holding up signs against hunger and chanting

while everyone tried their best in fundraising

for the cause.

Afterwards, I quickly got out of my minion suit

and chugged at least 3 gallons of water

because I was super dehydrated, but hey! It

was for a great cause. We got even more food

from Reaching Out and snapped a lot of

pictures. We even got to enjoy "Brooklyn's Got

Talent!" where Brooklynites performed and had

fun.

Overall, this was an amazing experience with

friends from Division 9. I look forward to

working with Reaching Out Community Service

for events like this one in the near future!

CLEAN & GREEN GCC!

GOWANUS, BROOKLYN SEPTEMBER 24, 2017

On a blazing hot Sunday afternoon,

not a single tree could be found at the

Gowanus Bay Terminal, but this will

soon change because of the Clean

and Green GCC Program

(GCC=Gowanus Canal Conservancy).

Their goal is to make the canal and its

watershed more open, clean, and

alive. It’s nice knowing that our hard

work that day will contribute to this

great cause. We carried out bags of

soil and decomposable foam, mixed

them in the right proportion inside

wheelbarrows, and poured them into a

huge rectangular concrete tank that

lined a wall. The trees and other plants

that will later be transplanted to the

18

tank will eventually sneak up the wall and become a beautiful green wall.

What was unexpected was there wasn’t just Key Club, people of all ages and backgrounds came to volunteer too. It was interesting because we got to hear the many different stories of peoples’ lives as we worked, and this is part of the reason why I like Key Club, it allows us to meet people that we may never cross paths with in life. Also, what was really inspiring was how this event was led by an old man (a botanist). He could have stayed at home and enjoyed the air conditioning that day, but instead, he chose to stand under the burning sun to work with us and help us recognize the importance of what we’re doing. This made me realize that age shouldn’t be a limiting factor to what we want to do, and that it’s never too late to do anything.

On Sunday, October 1st, Brooklyn Tech Key Club Members gathered at Pier 84, Manhattan to help families facing difficult times through addiction. Along the way, we meet up with Key Club members from Stuy, Bronx Sci, LaGuardia, and Stuy. Red Cross. Together, we helped print out pictures for those who had lost and loved ones. We sent out snacks, water, and Bibs for people to write who they were there for. Even though the temperature was freezing cold where we got there. It soon turned warmer after Key club members gather up to help those families. In the end, (my favorite part of the event) there were still many water and snacks leftovers. As a result, everybody START STEALING like it's the ... Jk, we all just took as much as we could carry home. After all, there was a box filled with a total of 48 bars, a few unopened boxes of water, and fresh bananas. There was also a tent that had plenty leftovers of bagels, bread, and donuts. Guess what happened? We (Every student that Ricky Ke were there to help) ate them for Lunch. It was so much fun helping out and I can't wait for next year!

If I had to choose anywhere to host a walk for Colon Cancer, Roosevelt Island is definitely a good option for that, and I think that the people in the walk who got to enjoy the scenery would wholeheartedly agree. There’s something about a cool morning in a relatively peaceful place that brings even a small smile to one’s face. In fact, despite train troubles, and my poor decision to skip breakfast, the Undy Walk for Colon Cancer was one of the more fulfilling events, as we left with the knowledge that we had contributed to a good cause even without donating or participating in the actual walk itself. Instead, most of were in charge of the booths and cheered on the runners as they completed their own contributions. However, just participating in the sidelines in no way dilutes the honor of doing something to help; how many people go out of their way on a saturday morning to go out and do anything without self-gaining

purpose? Surprisingly not that many, which is why I’d like to thank everyone who was at the event, even if all they did was pass out water or applaud for incoming runners. As a wise person probably once said, “nothing is anything without everything”. Royta Iftakher BTHS Class of 2020 Key Clubber of the Year For Character (2017)

PAT & D I V I S COR

Happy September Brooklyn Tech Key Club! Can you believe that it’s been six months since we started the service year? We’ve always been told that time flies too quickly so let’s make sure to make the best of every service project or fundraiser because they will eventually become mere memories.

If you don’t know who we are, allow us to reintroduce ourselves: Our names are Patricia Ahmed and Josephine Wu. We're currently serving as your Division 9 Lieutenant Governor (LTG) and Executive Assistant (EA), respectively. Essentially, we work with all of the Brooklyn High School Key Clubs to ensure that everything is running smoothly, and relay information from the New York district level to the division.

One of the duties as the Divisional Board is hosting divisional meetings, which usually take place monthly. Essentially, a divisional is a Key Club meeting but all eight (Brooklyn HS) Key Clubs are in attendance.

In addition to being updated on what’s going on in the district and division levels, divisionals are a great opportunity to meet fellow Brooklyn Sharks and familiarize yourself with the officers and members of our wonderful division.

The first divisional of the school year took place at Midwood HS, where we enjoyed sweet treats while hearing about both recent and upcoming events.

*** We participated in some great events this September. For instance, we had our Annual K-Family Picnic in Prospect Park where we ate great food and participated n fun games with all the branches of the K-Family-all to raise money for a worthy icause: Kiwanis Trauma Center. (If that wasn’t enough, I got pied for the first time,

The 9th Annual Hunger Walk also took place this month, towards the end of

September, where we set up booths, walked, and your VP Ziyin and Editor Ayan

dressed up as minions! It’s always incredible to see such high attendance in support

of raising awareness for worthy causes. It just proves how strong and supportive we

are, and emanates the motto: Caring-Our Way of Life.

If you ever see us at an event, please feel free to say hi!

BOTTLE RUN! TO PROMOTE RECYCLING!

Throughout the summer and all the September events, we have been collecting plastic bottles from members at every event and meeting. Many of us are guilty of purchasing plastic water bottles and throwing them out once we're done using them. What we don't know is where these bottles end up; that's landfills and the oceans. Marine animals mistake these things for food or get trapped within them, so they pose as great trouble. To spread awareness on this, and put our two cents in to help, we've collected from members bottles that would eventually end up in places like these. So far, we've collected about 500 bottles! Thats 200 more than the last count! Keep up the great work!
