PRESIDENT’S WELCOME NRFL PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL IS FINALLY BACK AT SHEPHERD’S PARK! A warm welcome to our round five guests, Central United, who at the time of writing sit top of the league with three wins from three. Recent history tells us this is always a tight affair with lots of goals, so let’s hope we can expect the same today…hopefully in our favour!
look at the upgrade of our internal spaces.
On behalf of the Club I would like to thank the Kaipatiki Local Board, Foundation Northern and the 100 Club for their financial support to complete this much-needed project. Thank you to the incredible team We are fortunate to welcome back the that provided products and time at cost (or majority of our exciting 2018 team, who with free) to allow us to deliver the project before a few new additions, average just 19.8 years today and on budget. Most notably: Barry old across the 25-man squad. Having been Graham from Steel Roofing, Chris Powell narrowly beaten by one wonder-goal in and Brian Simmons from 720 Build, Jeb March’s Under 17 National final, Hobbo has Warren from Designer Stainless NZ Ltd, Gaz promoted six players from the development Williams from J J Painters & Decorators, squad, so it’s great to see young Kiwi’s making Roofing Industries, Roofing Accessories, that transition to first team football. Ramset, Summit Scaffolding, Auckland Cranes and Alsynite. The most notable absentee for this year is the man who lifted the Chatham Cup for Birko in Our second facility priority was the upgrade 2018. This season Sam Burfoot will be looking of the kitchen that has allowed our new to help Bay Olympic secure promotion back to catering team from Zoma to provide a the Premier League at the first time of asking. range of healthy and tasty new dishes. A big thank you Whilst there’s been no premier games at to John and Debbie for their many years of Shepherds Park for over six months, the hard work in the kitchen. I hope you enjoy a BUAFC Management Committee and staff better view of the games from the balcony have been beavering away behind the scenes, than you could from behind the fryer! with a number of notable highlights I’d like to Our third facility priority was the ‘very share. Many being less obvious that the signed glamorous’ upgrade of gear storage. Our Chatham Cup shirts from 2016 and 2018 that playing numbers have grown year on year, now adorn our walls as you walk into the Club. yet our building/storage footprint hasn’t. A big project during the summer was the Through a number of innovative storage fundraising for and replacement of the solutions, we have managed to create clubroom roof. This was raised at the AGM more space, that will have a big operational as being one of four facility development impact on a day-to-day basis. bringing this project to life. On behalf of the Management Committee I’d like to remind everyone to treat all our gear with respect and take personal ownership to lock up our storage areas after training use. Thank you. Our fourth facility priority is the bank seating project, currently being reviewed by the Kaipatiki Local Board for possible inclusion in their 2019/20 work programme. I hope to be able to bring some positive news on that project in the coming months. Outside of the facility space we have a new staff member on board, with Katrina Shelford joining us as Club Administrator on a part-time basis. Kat will be supporting the Management Committee across a range of different projects over the coming season and we are delighted to have her on board. We would like to thank NZ Community Trust for their financial support in helping us get this new role up and running. On the senior social playing side, I am going to begrudgingly thank a Man Utd fan who has done a fantastic job promoting our Club through the summer and supported the development of three new senior teams. Please take a bow Club Captain, Ian Morgan. On the junior front the evergreen Ross Frisby has rolled out another seamless junior program that I know for a fact is the envy of clubs across the region. I know the incredible hours Ross puts in to make things run like clockwork…so please make his (and therefore my) life easier by reading his emails and putting the goals away properly. This season as part of our continued transition to our kit suppliers Kappa, we included shorts and socks in the junior fees. The impact of this was clear to me on Saturday morning with so many kids taking great pride in wearing their Birko colours. Junior fees will reduce next season, as they will not include shorts and socks, but there will be an option to buy if new gear if required. Over the next few weeks please
look out for the new range of gear hitting our online Club Shop. A huge thank you to Adrian Blandford for all his work on the merchandising front, particularly handing out the gear to our many hundreds of junior players over eight different sessions. On the program planning front, a huge amount of time and energy has been invested into the new NZF Youth License accreditation, which we are aiming to qualify for by Term 4 2019. As part of that we have been developing the BUAFC Football Philosophy document, which I will be excited to launch in just a few weeks’ time. A big thank you to Tony, Hobbo, Keith and the coaches who had input into that project. Our final big change through the summer was the launch of our new matchday program and social media imagery, in partnership with Weston Design. We have already had some great feedback about the new look and we hope you like it too? Thanks to Jaron Burbidge and Kelly Watson for managing this content. On behalf of the Management Committee I would like to thank Graham Lambert for his many years of support, both at first team games and putting together our programs. My final thanks are to our amazing premier sponsors, Harcourts Cooper & Co, John Bull Footwear and KempsWeir Lawyers for their continued support. Please support them as they support our football. As the players come on to the field today, those with a keen eye will notice our 2019 shirts have a second star above the badge, signifying our historic second Chatham Cup win. But those with an even keener eye may notice we’re actually playing in red this year. Wishing everyone all the best for the 2019 football season. Let’s go Birko! Cheers, Neil Coventry Birkenhead United Club President

COACH’S COMMENTS
WELCOME TO KRIS AND THE CENTRAL UNITED TEAM, FOR OUR FIRST HOME MATCH OF THE LOTTO NRFL SEASON. We had a good pre season build-up having promoted some younger boys from the reserves and filled the gap in the reserves with more younger players from our youth teams. I’m really happy with the group we have and more importantly the amount of youngsters with potential we have across the club. We have started the season a little bit up and down, but the players are giving their all. They’re a pretty young group who are all here for the right reasons and for me having the right attitude is key. We believe in developing Kiwi footballers and I am proud that 26 out of 28 players in the first team squad are born in NZ..
The biggest thanks from me is to Andrew Parkinson for all his time and effort over the last five years. Parky had to stand down this season due to increased work commitments, but still looks after our team/gameday registrations, player communications and video analysis. Parky was Assistant Coach, GK Coach and Team Manager for 123 games, during which time the team won two Chatham Cups and finished runner up in the premier league four times.
I don’t think many people realise all the work he’s put into Birkenhead United. I really appreciate everything he’s done for me and for the boys, so I’d appreciate everyone sticking around after the game today, where I’d like to thank all the staff for their great we’ll be doing a short presentation for a work to date, including: Tony Readings (Coach Education Manager ) man who helped put Birko on the football map in NZ. Alan Tomlinson. ( Reserves Coach ) Graham Routledge ( Team Manager ) Matt Munford. ( GK Coach ) Cheers, Shafeik du Toit ( First Team Assistant Coach ) Paul Hobson Dave Fahy ( Strength & Conditioning ) Birkenhead United Head Coach Jay, Marko & jordyn ( Physio’s ) Andrew Parkinson ( Legend )

ECB away. We started the season with a disappointing display in this north shore derby game. It should have been over and done with by half-time, but as old saying goes...’if you don’t take your chances’.
Onehunga away. What a diffrence a week can make. We put in a really positive and battling performance against one of the best club sides in New Zealand.

STARTING XI: Hirst, Gray, Darkwa, Hobson, Foulds, Bolton-Roberts, Turner, Jorgensen, B. Kelly, Connor-McLean, Young Waitakere away. It was a funny game, with some good bits and some poor bits – although coming away with 3 points is always a good finish to the day. Being able to bring players of real impact off the bench, like Lachie who so narrowly missed out on U20 World Cup squad this week, made a difference for us on the day. We will need to be a lot better in our next game.
