PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Welcome to Western Springs for round 11 of the NRFL Premier League. Table-topping Springs are the form team so far this season, so hopefully we can re-capture our 2018 form to take us into the second half of the season. As our no.1 field underwent some early season renovations today is the first of five consecutive home games at Shepherds Park, which I’m really looking forward too. Last weeks Chatham Cup loss unfortunately continued our Olympic Park hoodoo. Not a lot to be said other than we look forward to 2020 given our recent history of winning the competition every other year. On a brighter note, things are looking up on the player availability front, as we welcome back Alec Solomons from injury and Dan Edwards on summer break from University in the USA. We also welcome two new exciting additions to the squad in striker Judd Baker and attacking midfielder Ardri McArthur. Wishing you all the best on your Birko debuts. Congrats to the Womens First team who last Sunday ran out 7-1 winners away at Kamo in the NFF Federation One Cup and to the Mens Div 4 Barons and Mens Div 7 Barons who came up smelling of roses in last week’s interclub cup derbies. A big thank you to the team of volunteers that setup the junior fields every Saturday morning. We were one of the only clubs in Auckland to play a full round of games last week, so hats off to everyone for braving the elements. Upcoming courses:

Monday 10 June (6.30-8.30pm) Game training course. This is a NZF informal workshop focusing on a ‘Problem Solving Approach to Tactical Training’. This workshop is suited for Youth and Senior coaches and 12th grade coaches to provide the opportunity to prepare for next year. Please email tony@buafc.org.nz if you would like to sign up. Monday 24 June (6-9pm) Community referee course. This is an entry level course for refereeing aimed at players, coaches and parents who referee junior, youth or senior matches. This course is FREE for all Birkenhead United attendees. Please email tony@buafc.org.nz if you would like to sign up. Thank you to Kat, Ian and Jaron for organizing last weeks’ quiz and to North Shore Toyota for sponsoring a great event. We had an awesome turn out, so congrats to the winners who I believe are still feeling pretty smug about it. Finally, if you haven’t yet seen it, please check out our Facebook page to see the fantastic sideline behavior video NFF have put together. It’s a great reminder of the player development environment we want to create and how we can all play our part. Let’s go Birko! Cheers, Neil Coventry Birkenhead United Club President

COACH’S COMMENTS WELCOME TO CHRIS AND HIS WESTERN SPRINGS SIDE FOR THIS AFTERNOON’S ROUND 11 FIXTURE. Western Springs currently sit deservingly at the top of the table and their set up and quality coaching and players throughout there club is one of the best in NZ. They’ve been picking up some decent results this season and their consistency means that today’s match will be a difficult one – although one that our boys are looking forward to. Also a massive congratulations to both Dane Schnell and Matt Conroy for their part in the New Zealand U-20s performance at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Poland. You did the country proud and showed exactly what New Zealand footballers are capable of.

with Ardri McArthur joining from Glenfield and Judd Baker coming across from East Coast Bays. It’s also a massive boost for the team with Alec Solomon’s returning from injury, which will help to further strengthen our backline with his leadership, quality and experience. He’s a well-respected player both on and off of the pitch. Thank you to all our supporters and sponsors that have made it out to Shepherds Park again this afternoon – I know the boys really appreciate your continued support.

Thanks for the support last week in the Cup, Cheers, we are disappointed to have been knocked Paul Hobson Birkenhead United Head Coach out in such an early stage following our success last season. After going down 2-1 away to Bay Olympic, we will be looking to pick up a good result this afternoon and hopefully get our season back on track. We welcome a couple of new signings to our Birkenhead United first team this week,

MELVILLE UNITED vs BIRKENHEAD UNITED

STARTING XI: Taylor, Foulds, Darkwa, Gray, McIsaac, Green, Dymond, Jorgensen, Connor-McLean, Debenham, Bulay

STARTING XI: Williams, Foulds, Darkwa, Bolton-Roberts, McIsaac, B. Kelly, Dymond, Jorgensen, Connor-McLean, Young, Green

A poor performance in the first half but a really positive performance in the second half.

Simply beaten by a better team on the day and we never really seemed to get going all game. Melville deserving winners.

We were punished for a mistake early on and just couldn’t manage to find an equaliser on the day.

No excuses here as the pitch was as good as I’ve seen in New Zealand.
