PRESIDENT’S WELCOME A WARM WELCOME TO MAL, GODWIN AND OUR NEIGHBOURS ACROSS SH1, NORTH SHORE UNITED.

Mal we know well as a former Birko player and manager, whilst Godwin is forever a Birko legend as an integral member of our 2016 Chatham Cup winning side. The battle of the Darkwa brothers will be really fun to watch today, but hopefully Eman comes out on top.

Congratulations to the Womens Div 2 Socials team and Mens Div 5 Muzza who are flying high at the top of their respective leagues.

But special mention to the Mens Div 4 Barons team who are now the only senior North Shore will be looking to bounce back team at the club with a 100% win-record. from a surprise 1-0 loss to Waitakere last week, I look forward to watching all our promotion whilst we’ll be looking to get our season back pushes over the next few months. on track following a tight loss to Manukau Finally, if you haven’t yet done so, don’t in the same scoreline. Despite defeat there were plenty of positives last week and we’ll be forget to get your six-person quiz team looking to the Red & White Army to make the together for Friday 24th May. It promises to be a great night, so I hope to see you difference at Shepherds Park. all there. It has been a few years since we last played North Shore in an NRFL league fixture, but Let’s go Birko! those historians amongst you will know this fixture is also known as the Sid Derby Cup. Cheers, Sid, a life member at North Shore, was also Neil Coventry BUAFC first team manager, with Peter Birkenhead United Club President Williams, for four years. The Sid Derby Cup celebrates his involvement and love for both clubs and we honour Sid’s memory today. On Tuesday afternoon this week the Chatham Cup 2nd round draw was conducted and we were gifted a tricky away game at NRFL Div 1 side Bay Olympic. Ties will be played over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend from 1-3 June, which promises to be a great football weekend along with the Champions League Final.

COACH’S COMMENTS

WELCOME TO MALCOLM (HARRY JNR) MCPHERSON AND HIS NORTH SHORE UNITED SIDE FOR TODAY’S MATCH. North Shore United have a good start to the season, and a string of good results sees them sitting up in 6th place going into today’s match. We expect a tough game today against a well-coached side. Whilst result haven’t been great so far this season, the performances have been ok. We have just got to keep working hard and by keeping a good team spirt and attitude I’m sure we can start picking up points and lifting ourselves further up the table. Luca Taylor, at only 16 years old, has done a fantastic job in goal recently a hard position to come into at young age.

Godwin played 99 games for Birkenhead and was one of our key players in our 2016 Chatham cup win. Finally massive thanks to all the coaches who help and give there time up to coach the kids – we’re currently leading the way in coach development (Tony Readings). We’re in a really healthy position from midgets /juniors all the way through. Cheers, Paul Hobson Birkenhead United Head Coach

We welcome back Rob, Dan and Moses from US scholarships this week and next week. Also a warm welcome back to former Birkenhead United player Godwin for today’s game. We really appreciate all you gave whilst you were at Birkenhead.

MANUKAU UNITED vs BIRKENHEAD UNITED

STARTING XI: Taylor, Gray, Darkwa, Foulds, McIsaac, Young, Bolton-Roberts, Jorgensen, Connor-McLean, Debenham, Green

STARTING XI: Taylor, Gray, Darkwa, Foulds, McIsaac, Green, Bolton-Roberts, Jorgensen, Connor-McLean, Debenham, Bulay

Probably a fair result in the end. Having going down 2-1 at HT we fought back in the second half and were always pushing for an equaliser.

As always with manukau a tough game and credit has to go to them as a club how they have moved through the league. I’d say Manukau are a hard but fair side.

Game was played in good spirit and is nice to see credit has to go to Carl and Chad in changing the culture at GF.

We lost to a great strike from a very good player and that’s it really. Sometimes you get beat and there’s nothing to blame , no “we could have done this or that”. We just got beat in a good match against a good opposition.
