Editor’s note, Wednesday 1 April Another week, another edition. With the Bucks Students’ Union team swiftly getting used to working remotely, we bring you a peek into what you can look forward to, as well as some of the things that we’ve been up to. So strap in, because we’re here for you for the long run and although the venue isn’t open, we’ll do our best to bring it home for you and keep you entertained. We’ve been loving seeing what you’ve been getting up to on social media, and it would be great to hear more about it. And hopefully a short write up can help to take your mind off current events, give you something to do, and to use this time to reflect and move forward. To submit content or discuss ideas, drop an email to; editor@thebucksstudent.com. If you don’t want to contribute, that’s fine too - you can just take half an hour out of your day every Wednesday to see what’s been going on at Bucks Students’ Union.

Sabb update
Christina Demetriou VPSI
Tao Warburton President
Brooke Pilbeam VPEW
So we’ve entered our third week of working from home and I’m feeling pretty excited to be honest.
One week down, 2 or more to go!
Well we’re into our 3rd week of working from home and I think I am starting to adjust to this bizarre set up!
After all, they say third time’s a charm, no? Starting from this week we’ll be launching some mini language classes for everyone, with some Greek from moi (yes I know that’s French) and some Croatian from your International Executive Officer Karlo. While Varsity won’t be taking the pitches, pools and courts this Wednesday, we have been challenged by Roey to move the battle online…may the best keyboard warrior win. And to round it all off I’ll be serving some culinary creativity on Friday with the first LIVE “Dins with Dems” where we’ll be creating something other than a pasta dish, hopefully…
Just a quick message from me, hope you’re all coping well with everything that is going on. I’m afraid to say not much has changed since last week. The Students’ Union staff are trying their hardest to make sure the University is doing the right thing by you and your classmates. Along with daily meetings about how the University can improve in this situation, I am virtually at NUS (National Union of Students) conference where we are voting in the new NUS president and Vice Presidents just like some of you did with our sabbatical elections, as well as voting on some important policies that may go to parliament. I can’t say too much this week as myself and the NUS student delegates will be giving an update in next week’s paper. I hope you all stay safe and fingers crossed, see you soon.
On what should have been my final Varsity – I am feeling very nostalgic about my time at Bucks and can’t believe I won’t be here next year. However I will absolutely be coming back to next year’s Varsity to support all our amazing players and I hope all our 3rd years will too! I am still working closely with the University in this time to ensure you are getting a positive learning experience. Please get in touch if there is anything we can help you with!

University update
University update As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to unfold, one by one elements of our lives are having to change. These have become challenging times for everyone, particularly students. The University is working with Bucks Students’ Union to make sure that during this constantly changing situation we serve our students the best we can. The Prime Minister told the University, and other institutions and businesses, to close its buildings last week. Since then we have been so proud of the whole University community, especially students, who have shifted their learning and teaching online. We have been receiving valuable feedback about how it’s going, some highlighting things we could do better, and some uplifting positive feedback. The University has been listening and actions so far have included: • launching a Bucks Emergency Allowance (BEA). This fund is in addition the existing Hardship Fund and offers up to £250 to those in need. You will be receiving an email about this today (Wednesday 1 April); • creating discounts and ‘contract release’ options for those students living in University-owned halls of residence; • regularly updating a FAQ section on the University website based on your questions; • working on alternative assessments to make sure this situation will not prevent you from graduating or progressing in your studies; and • putting in place ‘emergency regulations’ which allow us to apply mitigating circumstances to all referred work, meaning that there is no need for you to submit mitigating circumstances this semester. Professor Gavin Brookes, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: “The University is committed to protecting your student learning experience.
We’re listening to all your concerns and are doing everything that we can to ease your worries during what we know is a very unsettling time.” “The Covid-19 situation is unpredictable, and the Government’s advice has already changed dramatically in the last couple of weeks. Based on the scientific evidence, we anticipate that social distancing will remain in place for some time yet, and we will continue to provide you with remote learning into next term. Should that situation change, we will of course keep you updated. But protecting your student experience and keeping you and our University community safe remain our key priorities. Look after yourselves and let us know if you have any questions or concerns.” Making your voice heard: feedback doesn’t stop… You will receive an email link to a short survey soon so you can tell us how things have been going with your online learning. We want to make sure that we’re making the right changes in response to your feedback so please fill it in. Thank you to all those who have already got in touch to share your experiences – please remember to feed back to your course teams at any time. We’re listening and will keep you informed about how we can act on what you tell us. You can keep up-to-date with all the changes, and what they mean for you, on the FAQs area on the University website which is being updated regularly to provide answers to your questions. If your answer isn’t there, please drop an email to student.centre@bucks.ac.uk and we will answer as soon as we can. Please take care of yourselves and each other.

90’s baby Seana O’Reilly gives her top Disney throwback recommendations that need to be re-lived!
The Lizzie McGuire Movie Lizzie McGuire is a teenager graduating from Junior high school, and eager to find adventures in Rome, Italy on a school trip. Upon arriving, she discovers that she is the identical spitting image of an Italian duo. Meeting Paulo, the other half of the duo, she is reeled into posing as Isabella on what becomes a journey of self-discovery.
The Cheetah Girls - A four member teen girl group called The Cheetah Girls go to a performing arts high school and try to become the first freshmen to win the talent show in the school’s history. During the auditions they meet big-time producer Jackal Johnson, who tries to make the girls in to superstars, but the girls run into many problems. Galleria becomes a full-time snob and forgets her friends, Dorinda has to choose between her friends or the dance club and other things that could break The Cheetah Girls apart permanently.
Recess – The Recess gang include six friends: T.J. the leaser, Vince the athlete, Mikey the poet, Spinelli the tomboy, Gretchen the genius and Gus the forever new kid. The idea is simplicity itself: a group of tight-knit ten-yearold friends battle to overcome problems and enemies within the confines of the school, the playground, the odd field trip and of course, the daily doses of Recess. The fun however lies in the outrageous situations that spring up and the even crazier solutions! That’s so Raven - Raven Baxter is a high school teenager who can see glimpses of the future. A lot of the time her visions cause problems, because she doesn’t see everything that will happen, only five seconds of the future. She, her friends, brother and parents always get into trouble because of her visions.

Remote volunteering
The Bucks Student lite edition 2
By Jade Collis
Remote volunteering Still have that itch to help out or to do something meaningful with your spare time? Jade Collis has you covered, and will be covering volunteering opportunities you can do from home in every edition. Helping the local community: Want to give back to our local resident homes? Why not become a penpal for the residents? You could do this via email - emailing them about their day or interests is a great way to volunteer from the comfort of your own home. Or are you a performer who is missing performing? We are currently trying to set up virtual performances. So if you are a singer, or dancer or have any other performing skills, why not volunteer your time to perform to the residents on their telly in the communal area. Still in halls? Why not offer to volunteer to run errands or pick up essentials to the residents who no longer can.
Donating blood
Be my eyes:
Want to give back and help the NHS, why don’t you register to become a blood donor today. Quite simply giving blood saves lives. Nearly 400 new donors are needed each day to meet demand, blood donors from all backgrounds are needed to ensure there is the right blood available for those that need it.
Be my eyes is an app that is available to all iOS and Android users. The app is free and it connects blind and ‘people with low vision’ to sighted volunteers. The app is designed for the volunteers to offer visual assistance through video calls. A Volunteering opportunity like this can make a real difference to someone’s life!
A few facts for you: Around 135,000 new donors are needed a year to replace those who can no longer donate. More young people are needed to give blood so the NHS can make sure there is enough blood in the future. Your red blood cells, platelets and plasma can save up to 3 lives. To register, you can go to my.blood.co.uk/preregister once you have answered a few questions you can make an appointment anywhere across the Country.
These are only some suggestions of how you can use your time for good! Whatever you chose to do will have a huge impact on someone else so get involved! When volunteering don’t forget to tell us all about it by tagging the union on Instagram and Twitter and logging your volunteering hours! If you want to volunteer or want any help with volunteering or logging of your volunteering hours, please get in contact: volunteering@bucks.ac.uk.

In these tough times, Catherine Lymer is going out of her way to show there are still good deeds to be done, and to find those doing them... During these very strange times we wanted to dedicate a section of the newspaper to just good news. This week this has taken the shape of reporting all the good deeds that the staff at Bucks Students’ Union have done or are doing to help others get through this.
for me. I am trying new food, supporting friends in their ventures and being inspired by some extraordinary people who are truly devoted to making the world smile again…with one coffee, one squat, one meal and one flower at a time”.
Lets start with our own VPSI – Christina Demetriou
Ellie Freeman who works over in our Uxbridge office has chickens at her family home, and has been out delivering eggs to all the neighbours. As well as this, Ellie has been shopping a few times for a neighbour who is newly retired and is one of our more vulnerable members of the community - having recently just come out of hospital.
“So it started off when I tried to make an effort to support The Frontroom. Managing to get our VPEW (Brooke Pilbeam) involved, this has now evolved into several orders of delicious treats and drinks from The Frontroom, where our alumni, friend and business owner Lauren May Ross is working alongside her partners to deliver some happiness to every door.” Christina is now on a mission to support small businesses in this time of need. “Lauren is not only fighting to keep her business up and running, but is helping others like her as well, so I have joined in on her efforts to support other small businesses such as Flourish.uk by buying some of their beautiful bespoke floral designs to brighten up the house – now my sunflowers make me smile every day!” In Christina’s bid to support as many alumni as possible she is ‘ glad to say that from the comfort of my home I am now able to attend Rhona’s ‘Rock It With Rho’ classes which have been moved online’. Always one to stay positive, Christina has responded with “Self-isolation may seem limiting and scary but I am surprised to say that it has actually opened new doors
“He was so sad and it broke my heart a little. I would just really like to encourage everyone to check in on their neighbours, especially if they know any of them are in vulnerable situations. An hour from your day could make a big difference to them, particularly those of us that are in good health and in a position to help out’. Last, but not least, me – in the last couple of weeks I have registered to give blood with an appointment within the next few weeks. I have also registered with Good Neighbours in my local village to assist where and when I can with anything that will help anyone living locally. It doesn’t take much to have a positive impact on someone’s life – so the challenge is there. What are you doing to help? Please let us know as I would love to write an article about what our members are doing, drop an email to catherine.lymer@bucks.ac.uk with your good deeds, so we can continue to spread the positivity across Bucks.

Let’s get quizzical
Let’s get quizzical
Quiz on a Sunday has been a staple of my uni career for the last 3 years, be that working it or taking part with friends, so I was looking forward to bring that routine back into my life during isolation! Being a huge Disney fanatic I was excited for the theme, I know my Marlin’s from my Mushu’s, and felt I had a good shot at placing well – even if I didn’t win… which I didn’t, but that’s besides the point. Taking part in the quiz was easy enough, at 8.15 the code for the quiz was posted on the event page on Facebook, as well as the SU’s Instagram story, I put the 6 digit code into the Kahoot app and the quiz began. The quiz worked virtually the same as Speed Quizzing in The Lounge, just without the hosts and punfilled quiz names. After having a chance to read the question you have 10 seconds to answer the question, the faster you answer
the more points you got for that question – which definitely upped the pressure! After each question you get to see where you’re currently placed against the others, and this made me more competitive to beat the person ahead of me each round. Doing the quiz at home was really enjoyable, the theme was amazing and it really helped to bring up my mood during isolation – I can’t wait to take part in the quiz again this Sunday, better brush up on my Noughties Pop Stars knowledge so I can (hopefully) place higher in the rankings this week! I hope the SU is able to keep these at home quizzes up during the period that the UK is in
lockdown, it managed to lift my mood and it’s a great break from my dissertation – plus there are so many themes that could be done to please a wide variety of interests. Keeping in the theme of music we could see different decades or genres for music, TV Shows – sitcoms, Game of Thrones, Netflix (seeing as we’ll be watching a lot of it during lockdown), Movies – Harry Potter is always a crowd pleaser! Whatever theme they decide to do the quizzes going forward I will for sure be taking part in the future – I may even make a pizza to fill the void of quiz pizzas at the Students’ Union.

A wonderful chocolate dessert with no need for an oven and only five ingredients, although you can add other things (lemon zest, stem ginger, white chocolate buttons) if you would like. • Melt the butter and the chocolate in a heat proof bowl over a pan of hot water, stirring once or twice. • Separate the eggs into yolk and white. • When the butter and chocolate have melted, take the bowl off the heat and beat in the egg yolks until smooth, add the warm water. • In a separate bowl beat the egg whites until stiff. Then carefully fold them into the chocolate mixture, trying to retain as much of the air as possible. If you want to add anything else, (lemon zest etc.) add it at this point. • Divide between 4 glasses / ramekins / any other receptacle and chill in the fridge for 2 hours. • Whip the cream and decorate before serving.

Easy cheesy straws Ingredients 150g Red Leicester Cheese 40g Softened butter 160g Plain flour 1 tsp of salt /2 tsp mustard powder (optional) 1
You won’t be able to drink through these straws, but they’ll sure taste good!
Easy and quick to make, these are a great snack and go well with a drink. They are also quite addictive, so be prepared to make a lot of them as they disappear fast. • Line or grease a baking tray with butter. Preheat the oven to 190°C. • Grate the Red Leicester cheese into a large bowl. Cut the butter into lumps and add it to the cheese. • Cream the butter and cheese together using a spoon. Don’t worry if it looks a mess – this is a rustic recipe. • Add the flour and salt to the bowl (and the mustard powder). • Mix all the ingredients into a dough, adding milk as you need it, but only small amounts at a time.
Milk as required
• Lightly knead the dough with your hands until it becomes a ball.
Plain flour for dusting
• Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it’s 3mm thick, cutting the rough edges off to make a rectangle. • Cut the dough into strips and twist them from both ends to make a spiral. Place on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 15 minutes until golden brown.
