You’ve started, so What’s Next?

Congratulations on joining the Budding Farmers! Gardening and farming can be a rewarding and relaxing activity, and it’s great for your physical and mental health. But now that you’ve got your hands dirty, you might be wondering, what’s next?

First things first, it’s time to upgrade your gardening tools. No more flimsy plastic trowels and rusty old shears. It’s time to invest in some high-quality equipment that will make your gardening experience even more enjoyable. Maybe a sturdy pair of leather gloves to protect your hands from blisters, or a shiny new watering can to keep your plants hydrated.

But tools aren’t the only thing you need to focus on. Now that you’re a gardener, you need to start thinking about your image. You can’t just wear any old outfit while digging in the dirt. You need to cultivate a stylish and practical gardening wardrobe. That means overalls, rubber boots, and a floppy hat to shield your face from the sun.

Once you’ve got your tools and outfit sorted, it’s time to start thinking about the bigger picture. What kind of garden do you want to create? Are you going for a cottage garden, with an abundance of colorful flowers and whimsical garden ornaments? Or maybe a

more practical vegetable garden, with rows of delicious produce to feed your family and friends?

Whatever type of garden you choose, don’t forget to consider the environment. Gardening can be a great way to help the planet, by using sustainable practices and choosing native plants that support local wildlife. Plus, you’ll feel great knowing that you’re doing your part to protect the environment.

Of course, no garden is complete without a little bit of whimsy. Why not add a birdhouse or two, to attract some feathered friends to your yard? Or maybe a fairy garden, complete with tiny houses and tiny plants, to add a touch of magic to your outdoor space.

And finally, remember that gardening is a journey, not a destination. You’ll make mistakes along the way, but that’s all part of the fun. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. Who knows, you might even discover a new passion for composting or beekeeping.

So, congratulations again on joining the gardening and farming community. With your new tools, stylish outfit, and environmentallyfriendly practices, you’re well on your way to creating a beautiful and sustainable outdoor space.

The Versatile

ONION Value Added Products You Can Make.

18
Farmers
Budding
Growzine

Recently, onion farmers in St. Thomas faced an unwanted challenge of having excess onions with no market to sell them to. However, this problem can be turned into an opportunity by creating value-added product. By adding value to their onions, farmers can increase their profits, reduce food waste, and provide consumers with a variety of products to choose from. Here are some ideas on how farmers can create value-added products for excess onions:

Onion Powder

Onion powder is a popular ingredient in many cuisines and can be used in a variety of dishes such as soups, stews, and gravies. To make onion powder, onions are dehydrated and then ground into a fine powder. This product can be packaged and sold to consumers or used as an ingredient in other value-added products such as spice blends.

Pickled Onions

Pickled onions are a delicious snack that can be enjoyed on their own or used as a garnish for sandwiches and salads. To make pickled onions, onions are sliced and then pickled in a mixture of vinegar, salt, and sugar.

The pickled onions can be packaged in jars and sold to consumers or used as an ingredient in other valueadded products such as relishes and chutneys.

Onion Jam

Onion jam is a sweet and savory condiment that can be used as a spread on toast or as a topping for burgers and sandwiches. To make onion jam, onions are caramelized and then cooked with sugar and vinegar to create a thick, jam-like consistency. The jam can be packaged in jars and sold to consumers or used as an ingredient in other value-added products such as salad dressings and marinades.

@buddingfarmersja

Frozen Onions

Frozen onion is a convenient ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes. To make frozen onion, onions are chopped and then frozen. This product can be packaged and sold to consumers or used as an ingredient in other value-added products such as frozen vegetable blends.

Onion Rigns

Onion rings are a popular snack that can be enjoyed on their own or used as a topping for burgers and sandwiches. To make onion rings, onions are sliced and then coated in a batter made from flour, egg, and seasoning. The rings are then deepfried until crispy. The onion rings can be packaged and sold to consumers or used as an ingredient in other value-added products such as frozen appetizers.

Creating value-added products from excess onions can be a profitable venture for farmers; however, they need the support of the government and private investors to gain access to the necessary machinery and facilities to create these value-added products. This will help farmers to reduce food waste and provide consumers with a variety of products to choose from. With some creativity and innovation, farmers can turn their excess onions into delicious and marketable products that will benefit both them and their customers.

DEMANDING! PLANTS ARE SO

22 Budding Farmers Growzine

Plants may seem like simple creatures, but don’t be fooled by their lack of a nervous system or a mouth to speak with. They are actually quite demanding when it comes to their nutritional needs. In fact, plants are the original foodies, with a long list of dietary requirements that would make any chef’s head spin.

First up on the plant foodie menu is nitrogen. These green guys simply can’t get enough of it. They want it in the soil, they want it in the air, they want it in their water, and they want it in their snacks. Nitrogen is like the caviar of the plant world, and they won’t settle for anything less.

But nitrogen is just the beginning. Plants also crave potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium. And let’s not forget about the trace minerals like iron, zinc, and copper. These are the plant equivalent of superfoods, and they’ll stop at nothing to get their fill.

And don’t even get me started on their hydration needs. These plants are like toddlers with sippy cups, constantly demanding to be watered. They want their water—not too hot, not too cold, not too hard, not too soft.

And if you forget to water them for even one day, they’ll throw a tantrum and wilt faster than a balloon at a birthday party.

@buddingfarmersja 23

But it’s not just about what they eat and drink. Plants also want the right ambiance to set the mood for their growth. They want the perfect balance of light and dark, warm and cool, dry and humid. It’s like they’re trying to recreate a spa experience in their own little corner of the world.

And let’s not forget about their social needs. Plants need friends, too. They want to be planted in just the right spot, surrounded by other plants who share their interests and complement their colors. They want to be part of a community, where they can gossip about the weather and trade tips on photosynthesis.

24 Budding Farmers Growzine

So, the next time you’re out in the garden, remember that you’re not just dealing with plants. You’re dealing with plant foodies, with an insatiable appetite for nutrients, hydration, ambiance, and social interaction. And if you want them to thrive, you’d better be prepared to meet their demands.

@buddingfarmersja 25

he future of farming depends on the health of our soil. Without healthy soil, crops won’t grow, and we won’t be able to sustainably feed our growing population.

That’s why it’s crucial that we start paying attention to soil health now, before it’s too late.

So, what exactly does soil health mean?

Essentially, it refers to the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil that allow it to support plant growth. This includes things like nutrient levels, soil structure, water-holding capacity, and the presence of microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. Do you know the health of your soil?

Future Farming Soil Health

26 Budding Farmers Growzine
T
For

One of the key ways to maintain soil health is through the use of cover crops. These are crops that are grown specifically to cover and protect the soil, rather than for harvest. Cover crops help prevent erosion, retain moisture, and add organic matter to the soil. They also provide a habitat for beneficial insects and microorganisms that help improve soil health.

Another important aspect of soil health is the use of organic matter. This includes things like compost, manure, and crop residue. Organic matter helps improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient levels. It also provides a food source for beneficial microorganisms, which help break down nutrients and make them available to plants.

@buddingfarmersja 27

In addition to cover crops and organic matter, it’s important to rotate crops to prevent soil depletion. Growing the same crops in the same soil year after year can lead to nutrient depletion and the build-up of pests and diseases. By rotating crops, we can ensure that the soil stays healthy and balanced. Finally, it’s important to minimize soil disturbance. This means avoiding practices like tilling, which can damage soil structure and lead to erosion. Instead, we can use techniques like no-till farming and conservation tillage, which help preserve soil health while still allowing for effective crop growth.

Soil health is essential for the future of farming. By using cover crops, organic matter, crop rotation, and minimizing soil disturbance, we can maintain healthy soil that supports sustainable crop growth. So, let’s start paying attention to soil health now, before it’s too late. Our future depends on it.

Cleo Jones Raised Right!

leo’s journey from selling lemonade and cracking jokes in full classrooms at Kingston College to running a thriving chicken farm is an inspiring story of entrepreneurship.

Known as Steam or Yung Mineral, Cleo Jones always had a passion for business, as his family is filled with farmers and entertainers.

30 Budding Farmers Growzine
Story: Annmarie H. | Photography: Ced Henry | Location: Bright Mountain Farm, St. Catherine
C
“Life is all about perspective, different visions that we both see, you see chickens, me see money, me see blessing, me see more cheese...”

It wasn’t until December 2022 that he and his partner decided to take the leap and start a cake sale to add another source of income. From there, they reinvested their profits into a chicken farm that has now become a successful enterprise.

Though a challenge in thought at first to build the coop, he was determined to make it work. He began to build the coop from scratch, a daunting task for someone with no experience in poultry farming. The initial results were disappointing, but Cleo didn’t give up. He continued to tinker with his setup until he found a way to make it work. Eventually, he had a viable chicken farm that he named Raised Right Farm.

Despite being a budding farmer, Cleo was a natural at accounting and used this skill to keep track of his profit and loss. He also uses social media to promote his business and attract customers.

32 Budding Farmers Growzine
33

His efforts paid off. As his business took the waves on social media with his song “Raised Right”, several persons reached out to him to offer support including Hi-Pro and the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries- Pearnel Charles Jr., who arranged for Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) to visit his farm for inspection and to offer technical advice. This provided him with an opportunity to improve and grow his business further.

Cleo’s success is a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work. He is grateful for the support from his uncle (Raymond) who provides him with valuable knowledge, advice and at time helping to fill orders. Ottina, his partner, is also a source of help, strength and motivation as they both juggle the demands of a 9-5 job. Ottina, having more flexibility because she works from home, helps with taking care of the chickens, raking up the coop, giving them water, feeding them, dropping the tarpaulin and ensures everything is order while Cleo is away.

Cleo’s ambitions for his farm are impressive. He wants to increase his stock of chickens to 800 and build a second coop, slaughterhouse, and storage facility by December 2023. His long term plan includes diversifying his offerings by adding pigs, goats, and egg farming to his farm. With his eye on the market, he believes that the demand for eggs among children will only increase, and he wants to capitalize on this opportunity. He envisions his farm becoming a household name, with a mobile meat shop that targets households directly.

He has shown that with determination, hard work, and a willingness to learn, anyone can start a business and succeed. Cleo’s passion for watching things grow has been the driving force behind his success, and he hopes to inspire others to follow their dreams.

Cleo’s story is a reminder that success is not achieved overnight, and starting a business may never be easy.

Chicken poop – it’s not exactly a topic that makes people jump for joy. In fact, some might say it’s a bit of a stinker. But when it comes to backyard gardening, chicken poop can be a real game-changer.

ow, you might be thinking to yourself, “Is chicken poop really enough for my backyard garden?” And the answer is a resounding “Yes!” In fact, chicken poop is so nutrient-rich that it’s been nicknamed “black gold” by gardening enthusiasts.

Of course, there are a few things to keep in mind when using chicken poop in your garden. Chicken manure is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are essential for plant growth. This makes it an excellent fertilizer for crops, gardens, and lawns. However, it is essential to use it correctly, as it can burn plants if used in excess.

The benefits of using chicken manure are numerous. It can improve soil fertility, increase crop yields, and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. It is also an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fertilizers, which can be harmful to the environment and cause pollution.

Another benefit of chicken manure is that it is readily available, especially for those who own chickens. It is an excellent way to recycle waste and turn it into a useful resource. Additionally, it is relatively cheap compared to synthetic fertilizers, which can be expensive.

Why Should I Grow Organic?

42
Farmers Growzine
Budding

The way we grow our food has a huge impact on our health and the environment. For decades, conventional farming practices have relied heavily on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides to increase crop yields and control pests. However, these chemicals have been linked to a range of health problems and environmental issues, including water pollution, soil degradation, and the decline of beneficial insect populations.

In recent years, more and more farmers and consumers have turned to organic farming as a way to address these challenges. Organic farming is a sustainable and holistic approach to agriculture that relies on natural methods to build healthy soils, control pests, and support biodiversity.

If you are wondering whether you should grow organic, here are some things to consider:

Health benefits: Organic produce has been found to contain higher levels of vitamins and minerals than conventionally grown produce, and organic meat and dairy products are free from antibiotics and growth hormones. By growing organic, you can be sure that you are eating food that is free from harmful chemicals and additives.

Environmental benefits: Organic farming practices help to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, which can harm soil health, water quality, and wildlife populations. By growing organic, you can help to support a healthier and more sustainable ecosystem.

Cost considerations: Organic farming may require more labor and resources than conventional farming, which can make it more expensive. However, organic farming can also be more profitable in some cases, as consumers are often willing to pay a premium for organic products.

Knowledge and expertise: Organic farming requires a different set of skills and knowledge than conventional farming, as it involves natural pest management, crop rotation, and composting. If you are new to farming, you may need to invest time and resources in learning these practices.

@buddingfarmersja 43

Market demand: As more consumers seek out organic food, there may be a growing market for organic produce and animal products. If you are interested in selling your produce or meat, growing organic may be a way to tap into this market and increase your profitability.

Overall, whether you should grow organic depends on your goals, resources, and priorities. If you are concerned about your health, the environment, and supporting a more sustainable food system, organic farming may be the right choice for you. However, it is important to weigh the costs and benefits and consider your own situation before making a decision.

KEEP YOUR GARDEN GROWING ON A BUDGET

46 Budding Farmers Growzine

Maintaining a garden can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be expensive. However, with a few tips and tricks, you can keep your garden thriving without breaking the bank. Here are some ideas for maintaining your garden on a budget:

Start from seeds: Starting your garden from seeds can save you a lot of money compared to buying seedlings or mature plants. You can buy seeds in bulk, which is a cost-effective way to get more plants for your garden. Additionally, you can often get free seeds from friends or local gardening groups.

Water wisely: Be mindful of your water usage when maintaining your garden. Instead of watering your plants every day, water them deeply once or twice a week. This will help the roots grow deeper and become more resilient to drought. You can also collect rainwater in a barrel or container to use for watering your garden.

Buy in bulk: If you need to buy gardening supplies, try to buy them in bulk. This can include soil, mulch, or even seeds. Buying in bulk can save you money in the long run and help you stretch your gardening budget further.

Recycle and repurpose: Look for creative ways to reuse items around your house or garden. For example, you can use old pallets to create garden beds, or use eggshells as a natural fertilizer. Be creative and resourceful when it comes to maintaining your garden on a budget.

Maintaining a garden on a budget is all about being resourceful and creative. By starting from seeds, using compost, watering wisely, buying in bulk, and recycling and repurposing, you can keep your garden thriving without spending a lot of money. Happy gardening!

A Plantbased Diet

What are the benefits?

In recent years, plant-based diets have become increasingly popular due to their numerous health benefits. One of the most significant benefits of a plant-based diet is its ability to aid in weight loss.

Studies have shown that individuals who follow a plant-based diet have a lower body mass index (BMI) and a lower risk of obesity than those who consume a diet rich in animal products. This is due in part to the fact that plant-based diets are typically lower in calories and higher in fiber than animal-based diets.

Fiber is an essential component of a plant-based diet and is found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. It helps to keep you feeling full, which can prevent overeating and promote weight loss. Additionally, fiber helps to regulate digestion and promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, which can also aid in weight loss.

Another factor that contributes to the weight loss benefits of a plant-based diet is the high nutrient density of plant-based foods. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are essential for overall health and well-

being. By consuming a diet rich in these nutrient-dense foods, you can provide your body with the nourishment it needs while reducing your caloric intake.

Furthermore, plant-based diets are typically low in saturated fat and cholesterol, which are common in animal-based diets. High levels of these substances have been linked to increased risk of heart disease, obesity, and other health problems. By eliminating or reducing the intake of these harmful substances, you can promote weight loss and improve your overall health.

A plant-based diet can be an effective way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. By consuming a diet rich in fiber, nutrient-dense foods, and low in saturated fat and cholesterol, you can promote weight loss and improve your overall health. Additionally, plantbased diets are sustainable and can be adapted to suit a variety of dietary preferences and lifestyles.

MO or No?

The debate over genetically modified organisms has been raging for decades, with both sides presenting compelling arguments. But what exactly are GMOs, and why do some people support them while others are vehemently against them?

Genetically modified organisms are living organisms whose genetic material has been altered in some way using genetic engineering techniques. This can involve adding genes from other organisms or removing genes altogether to create a desired trait, such as resistance to pests or increased crop yield.

On the pro-GMO side of the debate, advocates argue that genetic engineering can help solve some of the world’s most pressing issues, such as hunger and malnutrition. By creating crops that are more resistant to pests and diseases, farmers can increase their yields and provide more food for a growing global population. GMOs can also be engineered to be more drought-resistant, which is particularly important in areas where water is scarce.

Additionally, GMOs can be used to create medicines and vaccines that are more effective than traditional methods.

However, opponents of GMOs argue that the long-term effects of genetic engineering on both the environment and human health are unknown. There are concerns that GMOs could cause harm to beneficial insects, such as bees, or create superweeds that are resistant to herbicides.

There are also concerns about the potential impact of GMOs on human health. While there is currently no scientific evidence that GMOs are harmful to humans, some people worry that consuming genetically modified food could have long-term health effects that we are not yet aware of.

So, where does that leave us?

Ultimately, the decision of whether to embrace or reject GMOs is a personal one. It’s important to do your research, weigh the pros and cons, and make an informed decision based on your own values and beliefs.

50 Budding Farmers Growzine

It’s So Expensive: Why Salmon

There are several factors that contribute to the high cost of salmon:

Limited supply: Wild salmon populations have been declining due to overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution.

As a result, the supply of wild salmon is limited, which drives up the price. Additionally, farmed salmon production can be limited due to environmental regulations.

High demand: Salmon is a popular fish, consumed by people all over the world. The high demand for salmon also drives up the price.

Production costs: Salmon farming is a complex process that involves feeding, caring for, and monitoring the fish in a controlled environment. This process requires significant resources, including labor, feed, and equipment, which contribute to the high production costs of salmon.

Transportation costs: Salmon is often transported long distances, either from its place of origin or from a salmon farm to a market. Transportation costs, including fuel, labor, and equipment, can also contribute to the high cost of salmon.

Overall, the combination of limited supply, high demand, production costs, and transportation costs make salmon a relatively expensive fish.

Green Light for Local Ganja Farmers

amaica’s emerging medical cannabis industry is creating a path for traditional farmers to enter the sector, and this is

On April 13, Senator Aubyn Hill, the Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, announced he will be championing some policy changes that will remove the licensing fees for traditional ganja farmers for five years. Minister Hill added that this, in conjunction with the mother farm concept in the Cultivators Transitional Permit, will not only reduce the financial barriers but provide a ready market for the farmers.

While this requires Cabinet approval, the announcement has struck hope among the traditional ganja farming community. Farmers have long been requesting a smoother path

to enter the industry so there is equitable representation. It now looks like they will finally get it and this move can be a gamechanger. Here are four positive signals this new plan by the Government represents.

Promote Social Equity – Across the world, social equity is touted as one of the pillars for the new cannabis industry. Some countries, including Jamaica, are achieving this by wiping criminal records of persons who were charged for a small possession of ganja. By taking it a step further and creating the means to transition traditional farmers from the illicit to the legal industry, it promotes inclusivity and fair opportunity for income generation. Cannabis has always been a plant of the common man. It is only fair that they get an equal chance.

Collaboration – A key feature of the Government’s plan to provide winning opportunities for local farmers is the mother farm concept. Farmers can pair with licensed companies and cultivate on their behalf while setting a mutually-agreed price for the dried plants. This relationship can create greater efficiencies for the company and the farmer can have a guaranteed market for the crop, assuming there is sufficient market demand.

Crime Reduction? – It’s no secret Jamaican ganja features heavily in the guns-for-drugs trade. Based on reports by local authorities, illegally grown Jamaican ganja is exchanged for guns in the criminal underworld which is then used by gangs in their illicit activities. If the Government is successful in transitioning farmers from the illegal to the medicinal industry, this could potentially disrupt the supply chain to the underground market.

But for this to be successful, there needs to be strong incentives for the traditional farmer to

switch. Waiving the fees and creating ease of business is a step in the right direction.

Build Brand Equity – What better story could there be than Jamaica, the cultural home of cannabis, cultivating organic, sun-grown ganja with the expertise of its traditional farmers?

Our Jamaicaness is what separates our cannabis culture and experience from everyone else in the world and has garnered global adoration. Including the farmers in the industry maintains authenticity, builds brand equity and is a better story.

The growth trajectory for the cannabis industry is an encouraging sign for Jamaica given all we have to offer. Hopefully, more traditional farmers can soon make the switch and help build our industry.
