Kali is a very versatile and old system of fighting that includes empty hand as well as weapon training methods. It is a devastating Art unto itself, but when you add the Kyusho you become even more efficient, effective and advanced in disabling an opponent. Kali has always taught what is called "Gunting" for strikes to weaker aspects of the arms, in volume #1 the Kyusho added even greater potential and a perfect starting point for the Kyusho or Kali practitioner. Many arm destruction methods were demonstrated as well as Kyusho Knockouts using only the nerves of the arm. This second volume expands on these powerful Kyusho targets by working from the arm traps of volume #1 and demonstrating additional and even more powerful head targets for incapacitation of the opponent. This video compilation will bring you far more advanced skills, even if you do not practice Kali... the two methods were meant for each other. Several KO's are demonstrated so you can see the efficiency and affect Kyusho brings to Kali.

"Men are part of Creation and shamanism is our way to connect with this whole." Will Adcock

"The beauty of the trees, the softness of the air, the fragrance of grass, they speak to me. The summit of the mountain, the thunder of the sky, the rhythm of the sea, speaks to me. The faintness of the stars, the freshness of the morning,

irds of a feather flock together", goes the proverb. Things are organized by affinity. "Within the same plane, like attracts like", reveals the holy book. This grouping generates accumulations and these in turn produce an intensification of their own vibration, generally and unless wisdom or deep reflection mediates, up to their complete saturation. So it is both in the material world and the spiritual world. These cohabitations possess their positive and negative side, their advantages and disadvantages. The loss of criterion and personality in the least mature and experienced individuals is one of those negative constants in groups. To follow blindly the leader and the lack of discretion make that groups that meet in the affinity of the ends, act in a sickly way and lose the central axis, so even if a good intention was leading them in their juncture, this would do that they would get lost in the marasmus of madness, evilness and destruction. They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions! Fanaticism is one of the worst outcomes of these deposits. People lose any and all perspective, any capacity for understanding, since this faculty, by its own nature, involves seeing anything from different angles. Fanaticism is like donkey earflaps, which prevent him from seeing everything around him except what he's got right in front. Like donkeys, these individuals will be able to go round and round around the wheel, believing, however, that are moving in some direction. The accumulating effect that involves the law of saturation before mentioned tends to accentuate and intensify continuous a feedback: two individuals meet through the Internet and in a couple of days they decide to behead a priest in France. The word is full of this type of situations, maybe not of such a media impact, but driven by similar force. Destroying is so easy... and building is so hard! What drives our lives? Have you ever stopped to think about it? It would be arrogant think that everything is in our hands; and little diligent to believe that we have nothing

“B

the dewdrop on the flower, speaks to me The strength of the fire, the taste of the salmon, the trail of the sun in the sky, and the life that never goes away, they speak to me, and my heart soars." Jefe Dan George

to do with it. For the greatest minds, huge and incommensurable forces like destiny, are not antithetical to the concept of free will. This understanding requires maturity, waist and knowledge beyond the purpose and scope of this text; let's say only that destiny is, according to Shizen wise men, ambiguous and ironic by nature. Many things that should come into our lives, because so it was written, can be postponed or be unhooked under the accumulations that overlap our own bubble. The sequence of events is never by chance, but the result of an energetic goldwork and tension arithmetics, perfectly measurable in the world of shamans. Seeing things only from the logic overrides our way of addressing this mystery in an effective way. There is much more power in seeing man as a bubble of energy than limiting him to a mass of flesh and bones in his social context. As shaman Don Juan said, "The problem of modern man is that he intuits his hidden resources, but he doesn't dare to use them. Humanity needs now more than ever to be taught new ideas that have to do exclusively with the inner world; Shaman ideas, not social ideas; ideas about man facing the unknown, facing his personal death." Idiots, those who speak only one language, often rely on logic to convince themselves of how wise they are by keeping their paradigm, while the rest of the group applauds them even with their ears. But to decide and act effectively in the grounds of the mystery, one has to go beyond the vulgar, the consensus and the natural. Few roads have faced with enough fortitude, courage and sobriety these byways and all of them have paid the price. However, remaining in our comfort zone will not fix anything nor will it be a guarantee of anything, other than ignorance, an evil of which we will not always be able to defend ourselves. Consciousness has no substitute. The true ways of wisdom always exceeded the limits accepted by the group, but it won't be the first time nor the last, that mankind must take to evolve ... two steps forward and one back.

“The reason of the logic agreed by consensus in the group is but the limited vicar that sets us in the immediate.”

“Seeing things only from the logic overrides our way of addressing this mystery in an effective way. There is much more power in seeing man as a bubble of energy than limiting him to a mass of flesh and bones in his social context.”

Japan

They are very few masters of the traditional Arts who have the vigor and the necessary generosity to unconditionally teach the secrets of the tradition in such an open and honest way. In this his latest video Master Akeshi wants to share some truly extraordinary techniques of body training with his many followers. Some of these techniques, like the one where he cuts a banana in the air, come directly from tradition and others are based on the use of very modern instruments like the " throw- away saltarinas". This combination of modernity and tradition defines the talent of Master Akeshi very well where the most scrupulous respect for the essence of the Japanese martial inheritance is mixed with an openess to new things as long as their goal is improving the student rather than making him lose focus on his true objective as an apprentice of the Arts. While others flirt with the forms until they reach a paroxysm of anachronism and ridicule, Sueyoshi knows how to incorporate the positive and the useful without false pride or absurdities. Sueyoshi also teaches us advanced techniques of the "Art of unsheathing while cutting" and a series of especially suitable stretching exercises for martial practice. Acupuncturist, Shugendo Monk, hawker, indefatigable traveler, and swordsman of the Japanese tradition, Sueyoshi is a gift from the ancient Orient with simultaneous translation to the West in our time‌ AND all of this without losing the essence! Special Training & Advanced Iaido

Japan

any Martial Arts groups have special training. To do this special training they need special equipment like the wooden dummy for Wing Chun; the Sichi and the Sachi for Gojo Ryu; the bricks for Pa Kua (on which they walk); and a special 50kg Bokken that the Jikishinkage Ryu school uses (I have actually practiced with an 8kg one, and that although it is not very difficult it does produce an excellent effect). Nowadays-even sandbags have the most diverse forms and they are made of many different materials. There are two types of materials: those that are used to strengthen the body, like the Sichi, Sachi, wooden dummy, Bokken, or the sandbag, and those that we use to develop balance and movements. One of the special types of Karate training is Kata practice on wet paper without ripping it, although a lot of people don't believe it. Whoever can carry this out will doubtlessly have a very high level and will be considered to be far above any other human and almost godlike. There are also those who practice in slippery areas like on the stones of

M

Japan

a muddy and mossy riverbed or on an oily floor. I think that this is also very dangerous and difficult. There was even a "karateka" who when carrying out his training slipped up and broke some of his ribs. Now I will explain the special training of my school where we use "Ichi na Geta" which is the traditional wooden Japanese footwear that has only one walking support, and Pyon-Pyon (spring boots).

Geta Geta training essentially consists of walking with geta shoes and this is all that is required. If the person can walk along a dry riverbed, then he must already have attained the Menkyo Kaiden level and if he can run then he must be a "Geta-Do" soke. If we practice with consistency, we begin to realize that much of our body is asleep and that it has many very sensitive parts and other parts that are not so sensitive. For example, in Acupuncture treatments needles almost the size of a nail are inserted into the patient’s body, to a depth of 4cm or 5cm and there are places on the body where the patient doesn't feel the needle, but there are places where even the light touch of the needle no more than the width of a hair can cause the patient a great deal of pain. In any event, the objective of training with Geta is to wake up these parts of the body that are numb. Another objective is to improve our balance when we move and also to connect the hips with the knees and the ankles. With this training we will also increase sensitivity in the soles of our feet. We just have to be careful with injuries to our ankles and knees due to possible falls during this type of training.

Pyon-Pyon Dr. Nakamatsu who is one of the greatest scientists of the present time invented this instrument. Although it was developed initially as a toy, there were also possible applications for Jogging since because it is very soft it is good for the knees and the ankles. Nowadays, Taekwondo teams in Korea and in the United States have also begun to use the Pyon-Pyon and they are getting excellent results. However, while the objective in Taekwondo is to develop the leg muscles, in my school we try to use the muscles less and less to jump with the Pyon-Pyon and instead we relax and we try to use the Shizumi (lowering the body with the force of gravity) and allow our body to follow the movement of the Pyon-Pyon, which directs the movement and our body sensitively follows those movements positioning us correctly. In any event, we should try to ensure that our body and the equipment are united and not working against each other, thus allowing the body to follow the Pyon-Pyon. Indeed, muscle training of the body is a totally contrary objective to training with Geta and Pyon-Pyon. In the training with Sichi, Sachi or Nigini Gami, if you make a mistake in this training, the result is completely different to the one sought. This training is to relax and to make the body soft,

Japan

and also so that the movements are smooth and flowing and are done with the entire body. The objective is not muscular development. Similarly in Jikishinkage Ryu the objective of training with the 50kg Bokken is not muscular development of the body, but using the entire body in the action, given that it is impossible to move a Bokken of this weight with nothing but your arms. To do so only with your arms you would have to be an excessively muscular person like Arnold Schwarzenneger, but this type of person doesn't have capacity to do this type of training because they

cannot involve their entire body in the movement, which is the objective of the training. The value of this training is easy to understand. Only the simple fact of walking with Geta (for example) is difficult, that is what it teaches us; just like riding a bike, we have to walk a lot before we know how to walk well. Karate Kata training is sometimes much more difficult to understand, since it is more difficult to know when our body is in a good or bad posture, which in itself constitutes some kind of self-satisfaction. For this reason, Kenjutsu and Iaido training is almost always

done using equipment (like the Katana, for example).

Kumi Dachi The last Kumi Dachi that I have recorded are closer to the old forms and they have nothing to do with sport. In Kendo, or in Boxing, there are moments when the referee intervenes to separate the competitors; the Kumi Dachi that I do and teach doesn’t involve this concern. In Kenjutsu there are no rules, everything is valid. When the swords cross, we can do everything, even remove our opponent’s katana, apply dislocations, throw or hit. However, in my opinion, trying to hit is easier than breaking the balance in the katanas, thus giving an advantage to the opponent. When we are in this position, the most important thing is to try to feel and to control the point where both swords are in contact; if we can control this point, we can control the combat, the opponent’s sword and even the opponent himself. To be able to feel this we have to have completely relaxed arms and shoulders. We have to use both arms and control our opponent's strength. This is the objective of the practice of these Kumi Dachi. When I used to practice these Kumi Dachi with Kono Sensei, I felt as if Kono Sensei was absorbing my energy and I was totally drunk. But for this to happen (making someone feel drunk), we must also be drunk. For

Japan

this reason it is also important to do a mental visualization exercise and imagine that you are drunk, like they do in the "Drunk" Kung Fu style. Similarly some Karate schools also have "drunk" Katas. One of the Kenjutsu schools that has the same origins as ours, the Maniwa Wen Ryu, was also known as "Cobra with Fever", because its movements resembled those of a cobra.

Hidari Nuki: Practice with Katana, on the left side of the body In the Martial Arts without weapons (Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu) we exercise both sides of our body to the same extent developing the body in a symmetrical way. But in the Martial Arts with weapons (Kenjutsu, Iaido, Sojutsu) this doesn't usually happen, what is done on the left is almost always to the left and what is done to the right, is almost always to the right. The techniques of changing hands are very clear. This causes the body to be developed in an unequal way to the left and the right. Especially in Iaido, when we unsheathe, the left hand is always in the Saya and the right hand is always in the Tsuka, and that is why the right arm is usually always stronger and more developed in those who practice Iaido. Hidari Nuki training is good precisely in order to correct these imbalances in the body, and it even stimulates different muscles in the right side, which means that the movement of the normal side is developed and will also become stronger.

Ohyo Waza: Technical applications Normally Iaido begins with the Seiza (a seated position on the knees), but in my group the main wo rk is o n fo o t, t he K amae is almo s t alway s o n fo o t, s o it is better to call it Batto Jutsu. But in

Martial Arts we have to be able to fight in any situation: seated, walking, running, backwards, forwards, to the sides, or even when we are holding something in our hands, etc. If we try to apply Kihon Waza (basic technique) in a different situation, it won't work. If the situation varies, the t echnique will als o hav e t o v ary, adapt ing t o t he s ituatio n in an appropriate way so that it is effective. Tomo Enuke, for example, is a basic t echnique des ig ned t o cut the opponent's arms when he is in Jodan non Kamae, but that can be used to cut an opponent who is in front and another behind, or two opponents who are in front of us, one behind the other. Next we learn the Kihon. You never forget this, it is like riding a bicycle, and when we have learnt it we can practice more difficult things, like doing circles or bending more quickly. In summary, after learning the Kihon it is easier to evolve and more difficult to forget, but without an understanding of the Kihon nothing is possible and it is essential to develop the training of the basic technique.

Epilogue A special or secret kind of training is characteristic of each Martial Art. Each one has its own secrets that have been developed over time and

during years and years of practice. These special kinds of training are superficially all very simple ones, for example, my group trains Kesa Giri f ro m t h e b e g i n n i n g , a n d i t i s apparently very simple because it only cuts at 45°, but to understand the Kesa Giri correctly, we have to open the chest, the Hara, the ankles, close the knees, rotate the hips and so on. We have to move all the parts of our body at the same time but in different directions. Kono Sensei told me this and he corrected so many details that he made me nervous. But then I saw that I had to understand it for myself and that was what finally happened, when I felt that all the parts of my body had become independent, they all moved at the same time, in different directions, each one contributing to the movement. In order for the movement to be correct, first we have to build the body in a correct way, and so for this reason we often have to "destroy" the body to then be able to reconstruct it. When we "destroy" the body we greatly improve the movement. Each Mart ial A rt has its o wn met ho ds and s pecial kind o f training, but the most important thing is the fact that the Kihon Waza and the Kihon Kata already have included in them everything that is needed and everything that we need to learn.

Vital Points

In last month’s issue we covered a Kyusho KO that is possible with a single strike to the leg. The target was a combination of nerve and vascular tissue just behind the bend of the knee. It is, as is this month’s writing, the targets of the Monkey, from the ancient Bubishi. You may see result of the Blood Attack at these free YouTube links: Attack 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2P3oQrjGf4 Attack 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZVwV8VIpvo

Vital Points

his month we will look at yet more targets of the Monkey and yet another Kyusho Leg KO. Now this can be accomplished just using the nerve also causing a complete dysfunction or paralysis of the leg with a shock of pain followed by uncontrolled muscle collapse. Done well enough with a strike at the correct trajectory and weapon, we could also penetrate deep enough past the nerve and affect not only the blood vessels underlying, but also cause a vaso vagal syncope (fainting due to a drop in blood pressure). These targets when attacked correctly will also cause a vasovagal syncope (fainting due to loss of blood pressure). A Vasovagal syncope occurs in response to a triggered

T

event, with a corresponding malfunction in the parts of the nervous system that regulate heart rate and blood pressure. As the heart rate slows, the blood pressure drops, this causes a lack of blood flow to the brain which in turn causes fainting and confusion. That is how the sequence of targets in this method works, it is NOT chi or pressure points, it is not meridians nor is it fake‌ this is real physiology folks, and the sooner those who dispute Kyusho wake up‌the sooner they may develop other more advanced skill. As a way of describing how we can utilize these targets, we will take the easiest targeting, that of grappled action whereas the opponent holds us and there less movement. When held in the Guillotine position the strength of the

upper body is used to secure the opponent. This focused strength can diminish the nuero messaging and blood flow to the legs, which will weaken them to a degree. To initiate a nuero-messaging to further weaken the leg muscles, we can step or kneel on the foot (nerves and blood vessels impeded). You should realize that you must get off this point before you strike as it will keep the foot pinned down and possibly break the metatarsals of the foot, damage the ankle , knee even a possibility of hip and lower back. This is used to facilitate the nerves and make the need for power on subsequent points less. Next we strike in a slightly staggered timing on two nerves; one just above the outer knee, and one at the inner thigh. The inner thigh target is just where there is enough muscle separation to easily reach the Femoral Artery and Vein as well as the Femoral Nerve Branch. The outer knee target should be struck with a penetrating force (and stronger weapon like bone of the knuckles), with the correct trajectory of 45 degrees down through the knee area toward the rear of the leg.

The strike to the thigh target has a trajectory down in toward the outer heel, as you simultaneously stretch it downward on impact. The affect will be a stretching of the nerve and vascular tissue as well as the blood flow in the vessels. This will take a sharper and harder object like a knuckle (from fists, wrists or the Iron Bone Hand of the 6 Ji Hands found in the Bubishi), as the thighs muscles are large and you need to get deep between them. As soon as your opponent begins to fall, you must take your foot off of theirs as it will escalate the possible damage. The harder the opponent grabs the more potent this technique will be...CAUTION MUST BE USED IN THIS TECHNIQUE!! This is a very easy and powerful escape from the guillotine lock, yet not an easy KO, if it were more people would be copying it. This takes time, training and the right understanding of the anatomical structures and functions to affect correctly. As such most beginners (in Kyusho terms) may not succeed with a KO right away. Yet even without the KO, this technique will lock out the leg so as to possibly damage the Foot, Ankle and or Knee‌ making it still a very powerful atrial Technique.

“These targets when attacked correctly will also cause a vasovagal syncope (fainting due to loss of blood pressure).”

To see 3 Kyusho Applications of this articles technique on YouTube use this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyM6FPaPN9g

Vital Points Kyusho offers so much more than just a way to knockout an opponent, it can weaken the opponent, disable them, position them, or even help restore a body to full functionality and wellness. We talk mostly about the KO as quite honestly it attracts people to the art. But once the individual can get past this and focus on the infinite possibilities Kyusho brings to any art or style, the further they will advance as a Martial Artist.

Bubishi Use The targets of the Monkey are only one of twelve sets of targets in the Bubishi… labeled “Sichen” or the Zodiac postures. In these are described the target and relation to time, be it the best time attack or the time to have related dysfunction or death. These time periods for results are the result of blood and organ attack more so than nerve… as nerve is generally instant in reaction. When looking at this manual, we need to consider old fighting method was typically armed with sword, dagger, spear and arrow, these times may relate more to the time it would take a body to bleed out, hemorrhage internally (causing various and numerous lethal affects… remember emergency medical care was not present in this era), or die from body toxification. So if the main theme was blood attack (Dim Mak), we need to then base our actions against these blood structures as in this

attack. We can see this in the film clips above; several blood attacks and one nerve attack to measure the difference and reactions to that difference. In the blood attack (true Monkey” target), the body is seen to fade as blood pressure is rapidly dropped and produced fainting as the result. In the final nerve attack (better for moder n protection), we see the rapid instantaneous affect. This nerve attack is far more dramatic, less damaging and possible to combine with the blood attack as well. Were these targets only used as blood, or nerve…no one can say for sure, yet the manual leans toward blood attack as the base. But fortunately with the study of Kyusho through Kyusho International (no other Kyusho groups have this knowledge or actual skill), you can realize this level.

In this DVD, G.M. Larry Tatum (10th Dan) develops techniques of the Kenpo program at the highest level. Particularly, some of his “favorites” like Flashing Mace, Parting Wings, Entwined Lance… Masterfully executed and based on the experience of the movement, G.M. Tatum incorporates his innovative teachings in these techniques that will help you add and complement your training in the Kenpo system. Besides, they provide the individual with the best choice for selfdefense, based on the logical and practical thinking, and place him in the path of understanding the art of Kenpo. These are the self-defense and fighting systems of the modern times we live in. They are designed so that the practitioner gets all the benefits that training these techniques can provide. This DVD has the support of Master Adolfo Luelmo (9th Dan), who goes on with a series of techniques performed in a smooth and strong way, for situations of extreme aggression, in which can be appreciated different states of the movement, in a logical and effective way. As a conclusion, Master Camacho Assisi (8th Dan), displays a technique that combines the strength of the arms and his expertise with legs.

Reality Based Budo International fighting terrorism for 16 years How it all began Here’s a little martial arts history lesson for you. Prior to 1999 no martial arts magazines in the world were dealing with the subject of modern crime. If you don’t believe me, just pick up any martial arts magazine printed before 1999 and look for yourself. There was nothing about how to deal with armed robberies beyond grabbing the gun distance, no drive-by shooting training, no criminal chemical attack techniques, no countering gang attacks, no protecting other tactics as taught by professional bodyguards, and absolutely nothing about dealing with terrorism. Prior to 2001 nobody in the martial arts world was even talking about terrorism, but I was. One of my students, who had flown to the United States with his team for one of my police and military special operations courses in Los Angeles, was David Rivas of Spain. He was a counterterrorist agent protecting Spanish diplomats from the ETA terrorists, back when tensions between Basque separatists and the Spanish government were at its highest. After working with him a couple of times he invited me to Spain in the year 2000 to train the tactics instructors of the

Almería police department in the southern part of the country, along with soldiers of the Spanish Foreign Legion. After we had finished the courses, as we were driving back up north through the country on our way to Santander, David had a surprise for me, “Here Jim, I want you to have this video. It is the first tactical video ever made by Budo magazine.” I was shocked. On the cover of the video box was David Rivas in tactical gear holding a gun engaging a terrorist. I read the title, “SWAT International Weapon Retention.” “Jim, you must read the back cover please,” he pointed to the box while still driving on northbound highway E-5. I read the back cover of the VHS videotape box as he had instructed me. He had given me the credit for his video, dedicating it to, “my instructor Sergeant Jim Wagner.” “Wow! This is really great David. I’m proud of you,” I said from the passenger seat. Then came the even bigger surprise, which I did not expect. He went on, “We are going to Madrid now. I am going to introduce you to the publisher of Budo International, Alfredo Tucci. We are going to do a photo shoot for an article, and you are going to do a video. That is, if you want to do it, of course. It will be translated into a few languages.” I couldn’t believe it. “Yes, of course I want to do it! What a great way to spread my new ideas.”

A couple of hours later we were in the Budo International building in the village of Valdemorillo just a short drive west of Madrid. I met Alfredo Tucci, we did the photo shoot and made my first video, and Alfredo asked me if I were willing to do more articles and videos in the near future. Of course, I did not want to get in the way of my friend David Rivas. I felt that I was only a guest. But, David Rivas told me, “No, I am not going to do any more articles or videos. I want you to do them all. I want you to spread your techniques and training methods.” Apparently Alfredo already knew David’s desires, and what was to be a long working relation and friendship had begun. Through Budo magazine I introduced the martial arts community to many police, corrections, and military techniques and tactics. Once I had the readers “hooked” I introduced them to my civilian system Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection on January 21, 2003. I was the first civilian martial arts instructor (even though I was a deputy Sheriff for the Orange County S h e r i f f ’ s Department in California, and the Team Leader of the Dignitary Protection Unit at the time) in the world to introduce the use of Airsoft guns for training, Hollywood stage blood for realistic Knife Survival, tearaway clothes for Women’s Survival, criminal chemical attack defense that I had developed as a U.S. federal

counterterrorist agent, and much more. I was educating martial artists on ways to survive violent crime and getting people used to the idea of surviving terrorist attacks. To expand the pool of knowledge I introduced one of my Israeli students, Major Avi Nardia, to Alfredo Tucci and the world learned for the first time about KAPAP. This led to another friend of mine, Moni Aizik, doing articles and DVDs on the subject of Combat Krav Maga. Over the years I had written many articles, and I had over a dozen DVDs produced by Budo International on the market, not to mention opening up the flood gates for many other “reality-based” instructors following in my footsteps to present their own systems.

Islamic State terrorizes the world I had been teaching my Terrorism Survival course in Europe for 12 years, and it had always been my least attended course. Most Europeans would say to me, “Yes, it is interesting, but it won’t happen here.” However, it did happen in Europe, and it was horrific. France had experienced its worse terrorist attack in their history, in Paris, on November 13 and 14, 2015. Terrorists from Islamic State had murdered 130 people, and wounded 368 using military assault rifles and hand grenades at six different locations. Wasting no time Alfredo Tucci contacted me and said to me, “Jim, the next generation of martial artists need to know about y o u r Reality-

Reality Based Based Personal Protection. I want you to come to the 1st World Meeting Budo Masters 2016 in Rome in April. I’ve already put you on the poster.” I replied, “Yes, I will introduce my Terrorism Survival course.” I saw this as probably one of the most important events of my life, and for other people’s lives as well. For the past year Islamic State had been threatening the world that they were going to kill Pope Francis and fly the black Islamic State flag over the Vatican. I was already scheduled to teach Terrorism Survival in Ravenna in April, my Knife Survival course on April 23rd, Knife Survival Instructor on the 24th, and Terrorism Survival on the 25th, and the Rome dates of April 16 and 17 coincided with my trip. What better way to fight terrorism than to teach in the very capital that was being threatened? At least I would be doing my part. Not only that, I’d be doing it for the world’s Number 1 martial arts magazine, Budo, called Kampfkunst in Germany, Cinturon Negro in Spain, and Cinturão Negro in Portugal, and now in China. Just a few weeks after I accepted Alredo Tucci’s offer to attend the Budo event on March 22, 2016 more Islamic State terrorists bombed the Brussels airport and a nearby metro train station. This time 32 people were murdered with 340 wounded, and Islamic State stated that this was only the beginning.

1st World Meeting Budo Masters 2016 On April 16, 2016 I was called to the floor to give a demonstration to an audience of about 250 martial artists. I introduced them to my Terrorism Survival course. There were approximately 22 other world renown martial arts teachers at the two-day even to give their demonstrations as well, but I was the only “master,” and I am no longer embarrassed to be called a “master” since my promotion in February by the military rank of Master Sergeant (pun intended), to deal with international terrorism.

Jim Wagner After introducing myself, and Fabrizio Capucci, I said to the audience, “Most of you are not prepared for a terrorist attack. I know, because I took a photograph of you when this event first started. You were all gathered together in front of center stage in what we in counterterrorism call ‘center mass.’ Terrorists attack center mass. I took this photo with my phone from that corner of the room over there, away from the crowd,” and I pointed to the Hard Corner Right (the corner that the Number 1 man of a tactical team checks during a non-read Wall Flood or Penetration Flood Room Entry). Needless to say, I had everyone’s attention after that disturbing opening statement. I warned everyone in the huge gymnasium that I was going to throw a simulated hand grenade on the floor in front of me. When I did I said, “I’m going to teach you how to survive a hand grenade attack,” and I showed everyone step-bystep what I had learned in Basic Combat Training with the United States Army when I was in Boot Camp at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 1980. The technique has not changed in 36 years. The audience needed to know how to survive a hand grenade attack, since hand grenades were used against innocent civilians one of the Paris terrorist attacks. What was satisfying to me was seeing a lot of young martial artists under 21-years-old who were wide-eyed and very attentive. Alfredo Tucci was right, the new generation did need to know about Reality-Based Personal Protection since most of them were dressed in traditional-based martial arts uniforms. It is the next generation who is going to see the true value of Reality-Based Personal Protection, and the recent spike in crime and terrorism all around the world is driving them in this direction.

The Original Civilian Jim Wagner Go Bag After I taught everyone in the Roman gymnasium how to survive a hand grenade attack, step-by-step, I then showed the audience, with Fabrizio Capucci translating everything I said into Italian, the Jim Wagner Go Bag manufactured by my good friends at S-Gear in the Czech Republic. The three life-saving items that I showed them from my own civilian tactical bag was the C.A.T. Tour niquet, a bag of QuikClot, and an Israeli bandage. I told them, “If you are ever caught in the middle of a terrorist bombing, like the one that just happened in Brussels, just these three items alone can save your life, or another person’s life you wish to help.”

Reality Based Criminals, terrorists, and nature itself have declared war on you! Are you prepared to survive any one of them? Will you have what you need if there is a terrorist chemical attack on the public transportation you are riding on? What about an office massacre, do you have a life-saving tourniquet to apply to an arm or leg to stop the arterial bleeding? Do your children have what they need after a school shooting? Now you can, with my Jim Wagner Go Bag. “What’s a Go Bag?” you ask. For decades tactical people (such as police officers, military personnel, and civilian contractors in conflict environments around the world) have always had a Go Bag ready to grab at a moment’s notice; also sometimes referred to as a “Bug Out Bag.” What’s inside a Go Bag is determined by the mission, but essentially a Go Bag is a punishment resistant bag that is thrown over a shoulder that contains mission essential gear. For tactical operators it is usually packed with extra ammunition for their weapons, medical supplies, an extra flashlight, batteries, and other items that can be grabbed and taken quickly. When I was a police officedr I had a Go Bag in my patrol car. When I was a Federal Air Marshal (FAM) my carry-on bag was my Go Bag. When I was the Team Leader for a military Special Response Team (SRT) I had a Go Bag ready to grab if the base was under attack. However, none of them met all my needs, and they were not always very “ergonomic,” and so I designed my own. Now, for the first time ever there is a Go Bag specifically for civilians – you. You too can “think tactically” just like the professionals. The Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system teaches you how to survive criminal and terrorist attacks, and the Jim Wagner Go Bag provides you with a quick access bag that you can get to your life saving “mission essential” gear during a conflict or post-conflict. As I mentioned, I was a police officer, diplomatic bodyguard, counterterrorist, and soldier, and I always has always had a tactical Go Bag within reach, but for civilian life I needed one that would not draw attention, be functional, highly efficient, go anywhere with me, but none on the market were suitable. First of all the other Go Bags all looked “too tactical,” which means they don’t allow you to be the “gray man” in a crowd. In other words, if you look “tactical” professionals and the bad guys alike are going to take notice of you. Second, Go Bags of the past did not have all of the features I needed.

Therefore, I designed the ultimate Go Bag for myself, just like I had designed the ultimate tactical folder knife manufactured by Boker years earlier, and now it is sold all over the world. The Jim Wagner Go Bag is literally going everywhere in the world by many like-minded people who want to be ready for the small emergencies and the big ones. The great thing about The Original Jim Wagner Go Bag is that I designed it specifically to fit under an economy class passenger aircraft seat, which means it will also fit under a bus seat or under a train seat. I then take the strap, bring it up, and then tuck it into the back seat pocket so in an emergency I can grab the strap, pull it out quickly, put it on, and then I can go mobile. The side profile of the Go Bag is very slim, which means it can “transitioned to the back” (a tactical term for a slinged weapon rotated to the back) or hidden under a coat, because maybe you don’t want the flight attendant to tell you to take it off as you are about to go down the emergency slide. After all, you’re going to need your supplies with you.

Specifications On the outside the Jim Wagner Go Bag doesn’t look like anything special, and that’s the point. It’s what is on the inside that makes it the ultimate civilian “tactical” bag for natural or man-made disasters. Plus, it currently has several features that are my original ideas not seen on any other bags of its genre. Starting from the top of the bag to the bottom let me share with you the specifications.

Shoulder Strap Tourniquet Although I recommend that a tourniquet be kept in your Jim Wagner Go Bag the shoulder strap can be detached at both ends and each end can be locked together making it a loop. The loop can be slipped over the injured arm or leg and then the red tab is pulled tight. Next, a tactical pen is taken from one of the two Tactical Pen Pockets and twisted using it as a tourniquet windless. You have just made a tourniquet in mere seconds. The strap can also be extended and looped under the armpits of a victim and used as a Rapid Extraction Strap. You can even use this strap as a belt or to carry things. The Shoulder Strap Tourniquet is my original idea.

Jim Wagner MOLLE Webbing & D-Rings At the base of the straps, heavily sewn to the bag, are two MOLLE (pronounced like the female name Molly), which is an acronym for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment used by a number of NATO armed forces, nylon webbing that modular tactical equipment, or camping gear, can be attached to, or even a carabineer. The back-up system of a DRing is attached on both ends of the bag.

Tactical Pen Pockets At the top center of the Jim Wagner Go Bag, and both sides, are Tactical Pen Pockets to hold a regular writing pen, but a sturdy metal tactical pen is recommended for use in selfdefense or as a tourniquet windlass (a rigid bar that is twisted to apply pressure to a tourniquet). The two pockets are at the very top of the bag so they can reached immediately, even if you only have to use it as a pen to quickly write down something. The Tactical Pen Pocket is my original idea.

Document Pocket On the back side of the Jim Wagner Go Bag, just under the Tactical Pen Pocket, is the Document Pocket that is large enough to fit European standard A4 paper, and definitely American 8.5 x 11 paper. In this pocket you can have your travel itinerary, maps, or any other documentation you want easy access to. The top is sealed with a long Velcro strip from one side to the other side.

Reality Based Main Pocket Most of your mission essential gear will be secure in the Main Pocket that is sealed with an industrial style zipper that is easy to pull with a pull string. Once opened you’ll find at the top a Chemical Light Stick Pocket, which is my original idea. It is a pocket made of durable clear plastic, and it is for a non-toxic and non-flammable chemical light stick. Just keep it in the pocket until you need it. If you need light for a long period of time inside the pocket, such as working in a natural disaster, then all you have to do is bend the chemical light stick while it is still in the pocket and it will be activated giving you hours of light. The Main Pocket holds a lot of things, and here are the items that I always carry with me in this pocket: Leather work gloves to be able to push aside or remove debris Water filtration straw to filter contaminated water for drinking Fluorescent orange baseball cap so it can be seen from a distance if I am stranded Light to clip to the baseball cap 550 parachute cord that has a thousand different uses Monkey fist to use as a weight to throw one end of the 550 parachute cord Chemical light sticks, military grade, two for the pockets, and two spare ones Disposable personal urinal bag Ballistic sunglasses and carrying case Space Emergency Blanket for cold weather conditions & improvised locator-beacon Doorstop for hotel rooms or to keep a door open in an emergency Disposable Magic Compressed Towel for hygiene, drying off, or cleaning 3 large folded clear plastic bags to make transpiration bag or solar still Sun block (stick or tube) All-weather Notebook, small Magazine and Newspaper Pocket Part of blending into an urban environment, being the “gray man,” is looking casual, and what better way than to have a magazine or newspaper sticking out of your “travel bag.” Inside this pocket is a sewn in D-ring, and I recommend that you attach a small solar or wind-up flashlight to it, and any important keys. In the corner of the pocket, sewn in vertically, is another Chemical Light

Stick Pocket. If you don’t have any reading materials sticking out of the Magazine and Newspaper Pocket you can seal it with the Velcro strip at the lip of the pocket.

Tactical Flashlight Pocket Just under the pocket, on the exterior front of the Jim Wagner Go Bag is my original idea of a horizontal Tactical Flashlight Pocket. You guessed it. Usually when the word “tactical” is in front of an object then that object can also be used in fighting. What makes this pocket original is that it is actually on exterior to make it accessible, because there is nothing worse than fumbling in the dark when you need light. Also, it is designed to have the flashlight on, and it can remain in the pocket with only lamp exposed. This allows you to have a headlamp, much like a car, when you are walking around; provided you wear the bag on your left side as most right-handed people do.

Compass Kangaroo Pouch To the left of Tactical Flashlight Pocket is a 2.75” (7cm) slit, a kangaroo pouch, which is big enough to have a small magnetic compass inside. I prefer to have survival style compass that also had a whistle for signaling, a magnifying glass for making a fire using the sun and directing a fine beam of light to the kindling, and a thermometer.

Mesh Water & Food Bag Pocket To the right of the Tactical Flashlight Pocket is vertical zipper. Unzip it, pull on the strap, and out comes a large mesh bag big enough to hold a 25.4 FL. OZ. (750 mL) wine bottle, or snacks, or food you may have collected in a disaster or wilderness survival situation. This is another one of my original ideas.

WMD Pocket Technically it be called the CBRNE Pocket, which is an acronym for Chemical, biological, radiological, and explosives, but I decided to use the shorter, older, acronym WMD, which means Weapons of Mass Destruction. The reason this pocket is named that is because the most important piece of equipment I carry in this pocket is a smoke hood. A smoke hood not only filters out toxic byproducts of structure and car fires, but is also designed to filter chemical weapons. Few people

Reality Based

know this, but one of the airplanes that was attacked on September 11, 2001 was with a chemical weapon, and terrorist have used chemical attacks here and there since then. Because you’ll need your mask immediately this pocket has a pull handle, and if the zippers are in the upper corner, opposite the direction of the pull, then the pocket flap opens up immediately for quick access to the smoke hood. Then there is a smaller detachable pocket inside where the smoke hood is stored, but I always have two masks in this pocket. Let’s say you are going out for a business dinner, and you can’t carry the entire Jim Wagner Go Bag, but you want your mask with you, and a couple of other small items, then you detach the small pocket, which is a Velcro system. Now you will be able to dawn on your smoke hood and get out of the contaminated area. In this same pocket I carry a surgical mask, the disposable kind worn by health professionals in case I am ill and I to avoid infecting others, or if there is a fire nearby sending a lot of ash in the air, but no toxic fumes. I don’t want to breath in that ash, and so I would put on this type of mask. On the inside of the pocket flap is a pocket with a zipper, and inside this pocket I always carry the following: Potassium Iodide tablets in case of a nuclear disaster Credit card size card for bomb searches Rectangle mirror for bomb searches, signaling

Jim Wagner

aircraft, or looking at a face wound Disposable Magic Compressed Towel for wiping off any dangerous chemicals Chemical gloves when there is no choice but to touch a contaminated object Travel duct tape, flat for a thousand different uses Personal Health Items Pocket On the exterior of the WMD Pocket there is a small pocket with a zipper. This is where I keep the following: Band-aids (adhesive bandages) Q-tips (cotton swabs) Aspirin Foam earplugs Mesh Cargo Net

On the exterior of the WMD Pocket there is a Mesh Cargo Net that can squeeze small object inside. In this pocket I pack the following items: Travel tissues, which can double as toilet paper if there is none around Chemical Light Sticks, small (1.5 or 3.81cm) ‌and small items you may want to put there temporarily, such as a toothbrush

Trauma First Aid Pocket This pocket is not for a scratch, but dealing with a severe wound, such as a gunshot wound, a stab or cut wound, or even a limb that has been amputated or hanging by a threat. But, before you treat anyone you need protection, and that is why there is a Medical Gloves & Surgical Mask Pocket before you go to your trauma supplies. There is a pull-tab on this pocket, which is sealed

Reality Based by a long Velcro strip. Once it is open there is just enough space for a couple of medical Latex or Nitrile gloves and a disposable mask. I also recommend a disposable CPR face shield, which can be unfolded, in this same pocket. After all, you will want to avoid any biohazards. Once you have your protection on you unzip the Trauma First Aid Pocket. The first thing you will see inside is a big elastic loop. This is where your tourniquet should go, along with a permanent marking pen to write the letter “T,” for tourniquet on the victim’s forehead and the time the tourniquet was applied. You can also use the pen to write on a door or wall when doing Search & Rescue missions. The reason this is the first thing that you see when you open the pocket is because you are dealing with mere seconds if an artery is severed, and you need to get a tourniquet on the victim, or maybe even on yourself, immediately. The following additional items should be in this lifesaving pocket: QuickClot or Celox blood clotting sponge to go directly into or on the wound The Emergency Bandage, also known as the Israeli Bandage, by First Care Space Emergency Blanket for treating injury shock

Waterproof Bag Pocket At the bottom of the bag is a zipper that goes the entire width of the bag. Reach in and pull out the red waterproof bag. This waterproof bag has many purposes, and two could literally save your life. When I was training with the United States Marines in a Tactical Swimmer course the instructor taught my class how to tread water, take off our pants, tie a knot at the bottom, zip up and button it and make a big “mouth,” hold it behind the head and then scoop in air into the opening. Then I had to squeeze the mouth closed, put the tied pant legs around the neck like a life preserver, and then use this as an improvised life preserver, and it worked. Yes, it would only last about ten minutes at a time with splashing water over it to keep it a little airtight, but it could keep one alive. Well, using this training I decided to place a waterproof bag into this Waterproof Bag Pocket that was big enough to keep the average sized adult male afloat should there be no life preserver. It worked better than a pair of combat pants because the bag is waterproof. That makes it much easier. Now, if you don’t have the strength to tread water to scoop in air from behind the head, you can put the parachute cord around your neck, half the mouth in the water and the other half out, and then “splash” in air. This gives you just enough to stay afloat. Then you can blow into the valve and fill it up with air like a balloon, and keep it inflated. You won’t see this feature in any other Go Bag. Because the big bag is waterproof you can also carry water in it. In a survival situation you may have to gather and transport water. Have you ever been stuck in an airport over night? Well, I have, and it is not a comfortable feeling at all. Now, I don’t carry a travel pillow with me wherever I go, because they are bulky and only good for a sitting position, and this is why I developed this waterproof bag to be a normal sized pillow. Just stuff it with a jacket, clothing, or leaves and you have a comfortable pillow to seep on. If you are floating in the middle of the ocean or sleeping on a cold airport tiled floor you’ll want your improvised floatation device (not approved by any of the world's Coast Guard as a life preserver) or your “pillow” attached to your Jim Wagner Go Bag so they don’t get separated. This is why there are attachment straps inside the Waterproof Bag Pocket – to keep the two bags together.

Of course, like any bag you can carry what you want in it. You may never need it, but it is there just in case you need it. THE WATERPROOF BAG IS SOLD SEPERATELY.

The Logo There was no symbol for a go bag or a bug out bag, and so I decided to design one. If you have ever been to Europe the Customs agents have two different stamps. When you enter the country the stamp has a box with an open left side. If the arrow points inside the box that means that indicates entry into the country. If the arrow points to the outside of the box that indicates departure from the country – going out. I took that same concept and did it with a pictogram of a Go Bag. The arrow pointing out on the left side indicates going, thus “Go” Bag. In color this arrow is red, and red always means emergency, and this is what a Go Bag is, a bag for emergencies. Since I created the first original Go Bag my name, the designer, appears on the logo. My name is in gray, because I always want to be “the gray man” in a crowd, so as not to attract attention to myself, and this should be your goal as well. Being the gray man, coupled with situational awareness, backed up by the proper tactical training, will help you survive in an increasingly violent world. The word “original” is part of the logo because no other designer or company has really made an authentic tactical Go Bag for civilians. At the moment of my bag’s release all other Go Bags look tactical. The people who wear them look like they did a private security mission overseas. However, the Jim Wagner Go Bag can be worn by anyone. I put the word “original,” because like my Jim Wagner Reality Based Blade, others will be copying my ideas, and I want my students and customers to know that mine was the first, and indeed the original.

Purchasing the Original Jim Wagner Go Bag To purchase this unique tactical Go Bag simply go to the Jim Wagner Go Bag website at www.jimwagner-gobag.com and order one. Even if you chose not to use my bag, any good shoulder bag will do as long as it has a good pocket system that will keep your supplies organized. Plus, you want a bag that does not look tactical. I concluded my demonstration in Rome by stating, “Terrorism is going to increase in Europe, and you had better include Terrorism Survival as part of your training.” Yes, it was a direct endorsement of my course, but what other martial arts system is teaching anything like it? My course has been the only one of its kind for 13 years now, and that’s mainly due to my specialized background. Very few people in this world, let alone martial arts instructors, have a counterterrorism background, but I do: along with being a former jailer, police officer, dignitary protection agent, private bodyguard, S.W.A.T. officer, military police soldier, security forces and Team Leader of a military Special Response Team. However, the good thing is that martial arts instructors don’t need to have a counterterrorism background to teach students how to survive the most likely terrorist attacks. They don’t have to “recreate the wheel.” All they need is to teach my Terrorism Survival curriculum, along with viewing my Budo videos. The course was painstakingly developed over my lifetime, that included training with and instructing the best in the world, in order to deal with the real bad guys. And, always remember, that it was Alfredo Tucci that introduced my Terrorism Survival course to the martial arts community and the Jim Wagner Go Bag. BE A HARD TARGET

Playing the warrior? In the world of martial arts and combat sports, it is common to meet practitioners with an aggressive look as soon as he sees another practitioner. Is it really necessary, and does it reflect the attitude and the image of a r eal warrior? Doesn’t he seek peace first of all?

Jeet Kune Do

D

oesn’t this peace take place with an attitude of notaggressiveness and the propagation of love around one? Indeed, a soldier doesn’t leave the battlefield wearing an aggressive attitude toward his peers. A soldier is a warrior only when he has to defend his life in the fighting throughout his life. He won’t have an aggressive attitude toward others : he knows very well the inestimable value of life and the sweetness of peace. The soldier fights only to preserve this peace, so difficult to achieve and maintain. The peace comes from the bottom of our heart, and can only be achieved if we are in peace in our own body.

“Most people who want to pretend to be warriors are, in reality, in a constant fear of confrontation.

Yet, playing the warrior with a constant aggressive attitude, is not it a dangerous game? Is not it just a reflection that some people want to show, in order to protect themselves? Most people who want to pretend to be warriors are, in reality, in a constant fear of confrontation. They try to protect themselves from fights by pretending to be impressive warriors. Unfortunately, an aggressive attitude calls aggressivity from others. Consequently, the opposite effect is reached. If we look at people in an aggressive way, they don’t understand why we look at them that way. As a result, a confrontation is often unavoidable. The best attitude, in order to protect ourselves from a useless fight, is not it to smile at people, to show them our peaceful wish? Furthermore, we learn that to be effective and explosive during a fight, we should release tension and be relaxed. This proves how much it is stupid and dangerous to be tensed, wearing an aggressive look: this tension serves ourselves badly, instead of favour ourselves during a real confrontation, triggered by this aggressivity and this look. So why acting this way? This is actually really simple: the more a person feels insecure, the more he will try to reassure oneself. In this case, some people will think that pretending to be a warrior will protect them from the confrontation.

Then, they will cultivate an aggressive look, they will wear an invisible “warrior armor”, and a disrespectful attitude toward others. But playing the warrior is not being a warrior. Being a warrior is in our genes, and we can develop reactions and learn to defend ourselves through the practice of martial arts and combat sports. But it won’t make us warriors. If we are non-aggressive in everyday life, we won’t become aggressive with the practice.

It’s quite the opposite: the practice aims to focus our aggressivity, our inner insecurity, in order to live in harmony and peacefully with people around us. Do you imagine, a fighter on a ring, who would challenge everybody in the street, playing the warrior constantly? It’s the contrary, the fighter live in peace with others. Because he proved everything he had to on the ring, or during competitions with other styles. To achieve inner peace, and therefore live in peace with others, it is

Jeet Kune Do sometimes necessary, for some practitioners, to confront each other during sparring. It allows them to realize that nothing in life is guaranteed, either the victory or the defeat. Indeed, a fighter knows that he might lose, despite his hard training. And for this, he respects every opponent and won’t be looking for a confrontation if it’s not strictly necessary. This is the reason why I always suggest competition to my aggressive students who want to pretend to be warriors. It will show them what is a flight with stakes, and they will realize that they need to deal with many factors, such as adrenaline and fear of the other. However, I realize that a lot of those, playing at warriors

in front of others, decline fighting in competition, because it’s not what they are looking for. Actually, when those “warriors” have to face their fears and their inner insecurity, they decline because, deep down, they know why they play the illusory warrior. They are afraid to fight, so they think that pretending to be a warrior will protect them from all fights. But it’s not true: when you play with fire, you run the risk to kindle it. It’s the same with war: if you play the warrior, you expose yourself to war. So to avoid war, we should live in peace and go to war only if we are really threatened. So let’s respect one another: let’s not seek confrontation with people and in particular other practitioners of martial arts and combat sports.

“So to avoid war, we should live in peace and go to war only if we are really threatened.”

We have so much to learn from each other, from all styles and all systems need to exchange in order to evolve and expand. No system will ever have the exclusiveness compared to another. We should leave this play of the warrior aside, and learn to appreciate each other with smiles, and by spreading different styles and peace. Most importantly, in everyday life, let’s show our love and not our hate. The inner peace and the peaceful strength are the real mark of the warrior.

Bujutsu - Under the aspects of Warfare... (By Jordan Augusto)

For scholars, all the existing maneuvers in the Japanese Bujutsu are to be found in the famous manual written by Sun Tzu. Is this so? Whether true or not, everyone knows that this famous Chinese strategist has been influential in the war maneuvers that have existed from his days onward. It's a question of very simple lessons, which can be summarized as follows: "If the enemy attacks, I step back. If he rests, I attack. If he flees, I chase him. If he gets tired and stops, I kill him."

Shizen Tradition

“If the enemy attacks, I step back. If he rests, I attack. If he flees, I chase him. If he gets tired and stops, I kill him.

Bugei

In each circumstance, within his wealth of knowledge of attacks and defenses, he developed what we believe to be the best method of warfare in hand to hand or armed fighting, which has been known in Japan as Bujutsu - (specific) art of war. For the Japanese warrior who followed the Bushido code, it was all about exercises, forced marches, exhaustive repetition of techniques and obedience, to obtain the required synchrony and a collective sense of unity among the combatants. Many schools tried to keep up the traditional thinking even in the twentieth century, which was quickly rejected by the natural evolution of the world and reflected in the people as the sense of freedom and the emergence of a new era for Japan and for other countries. Japanese masters then initiate a new stage in the West, where they believed it would be possible to catechize Westerners with the Japanese warfare methods. There are many stories of twentieth century masters, who behaved like authentic samurais, and for whom respect and honor were their daily codes. The big problem is that with the industrial revolution and the advent of World War II, the concepts used in the Bushido fell apart and many masters, at the end of the seventies and eighties were abandoned by their students and forgotten. So the end of the teacher-pupil obligation started to arise.

Shizen Tradition

Europe and the USA were the first to liberate themselves from the Japanese hegemony in Martial Arts and founded their own schools. An eternal dispute between the West and the East would begin then in the world of Martial Arts. Even today, and especially with the rise of countless other non-Japanese Martial Arts, the reformulation of concepts and the rescue of traditions are urging teachers to create new methods and resources so that Japanese classical arts do not fall into oblivion. If we observe carefully, the beginning of the XXI century is marked by deep changes on the economic, military, technological and scientific levels. Imbalances in population have worsened, and while there are countries with a high demographic rate, in others the population growth has been nil. These imbalances allied to the emergence of new technologies and economic globalization, the development of science and health, the dependence on non-renewable energy and to the increased environmental degradation have caused social and / or cultural shocks never before witnessed. An example of this is the expansion of democracies, while emerging "new" dictatorships. Mass migrations, the development of new diseases or the decreasing of oil reserves, also force us to rethink the current forms of life. And what does Bushido do in all this?

Shizen Tradition

“Europe and the USA were the first to liberate themselves from the Japanese hegemony in Martial Arts and founded their own schools.

Bugei

In any and every culture where war has been responsible for the great advances and changes, we can perceive the typical characteristics of the maneuvers known by the troops around the world, which certainly, in Bujutsu have another name. It is proof of the collective unconscious acting in an area that for centuries has defined the fate of peoples and cultures. Many claim that the feats of the war masters in Europe, which remain unknown to other people who do not have access to the stories "in situ". If we look at it from this point of view, from the voyages undertaken by the Portuguese and the arrival of Columbus in America, a new humanity entered the European mental horizon. In front of that, Europe was gradually forced to rethink itself. At the same time, Europeans had to think about the perspective of the American Indian, as well as several other villages which they were facing worldwide. In Japan it was no different in analogy with the "Ainu" people. In that process, it emerged a new "savage", transposition to the New World of constructions of otherness already existing in the European imaginary and mostly inherited from the ancient thought. Some say that Asians are not too brave and less warlike than Europeans, because they never were subject to violent environmental changes. That's why they differ from Europeans, whose environment would be more conducive to forging a temperament with fierce passions. Could it be so?

Shizen Tradition

“In any and every culture where war has been responsible for the great advances and changes, we can perceive the typical characteristics of the maneuvers known by the troops around the world, which certainly, in Bujutsu have another name.

Bugei

Be that as it may, the over-cautiousness of the Asians is also due to social institutions such as despotism, as opposed to other peoples (in other climates), whether Greek or not, who lived in freedom and therefore were more brave and belligerent. If Bujutsu is the art of war, obviously we will find it in all cultures. Time, more than anything, is witness to the many maneuvers that even today make the war masters, "chief lords of the strategy." All forms of war, though obsolete, remain seated on the edge of time and in relation to the story told by the elders. And so it will remain until the end of our days, because the past is always a reference to the present, which, through changes, is projected into the future. Seeing the catastrophes is not enough to understand the war...

Fear is the most ignorant, the most unjust and the cruelest of the counselors (Edward Burke) On the other hand, more than ever, this modern era has come to confirm that the extremes and their consequences can today, even more than before, be disastrous. Every general who acted with extremism succumbed to the eventual surprise of the unexpected. Everyone knows that who exalts an extreme attitude, should also expect an extreme response. The good strategy consists

Shizen Tradition “In the reality of war, or in the synthesis of Bujutsu, there is an energy charge in the warrior that needs a drift, a download. When that download is not carried out, for the warrior to be satisfied - because reality is frustrating - he needs a means to realize himself, which is the hallucinatory fantasy.

Bugei

of a sure and harmonious way of moving, considering that war is in essence ironic and unpredictable. So Sun Tzu wisely tells us that: "If you want to eliminate the enemy, you have to arouse hatred of your soldiers; if you want to get the wealth of the enemy, you have to know how to manage the distribution of the spoils.” The good strategy consists of a sure and harmonious way of moving If you want to be a winner, you must learn to also manage your own emotions, because once these forms of maneuvers are used against us, our balance will be the successor of our internal management. In this case, we can understand that the extremes can lead to ruin. You don’t have to be tough, you must be flexible! Let us try to get our own help in the inner calm, so as to restore ourselves within the logic of our movement. Master Dôgen said: "Within your own heart, right there is your exercise room." In the war there is no victory, but in its trajectory we can find out what makes of it the reason for our defeat. In the reality of war, or in the synthesis of Bujutsu, there is an energy charge in the warrior that needs a drift, a download. When that download is not carried out, for the warrior to be satisfied - because reality is frustrating he needs a means to realize himself, which is the hallucinatory fantasy. Therefore, setting the extreme as the only way to success is establishing in the same proportion the only way to failure.

Shizen Tradition “If you want to be a winner, you must learn to also manage your own emotions, because once these forms of maneuvers are used against us, our balance will be the successor of our internal management. “

Combat Hapkido

The Values in Combat Hapkido Master Juan Romero Pons From our perspective, the training in a Self Defense system should not involve only concepts and defensive techniques, but it should be well conditioned by a series of ethical and human values. Otherwise we would risk falling into antivalues like arrogance, irresponsibility, dishonesty, disrespect, ingratitude, pusillanimity in combat... In Combat Hapkido we give great importance to the values, so each class or seminar (and everything around it) is a magnificent opportunity to cultivate and improve as a combatant and as a person.

Combat Hapkido

In the form of Decalogue, we have selected 10 values that we consider truly important: 1. HONOR. Understood as a moral quality that leads the person to act righteously, to fulfill his duty in relation to other people and himself. It is an attribute often united to the virtue, merit and heroic actions. In our students can be a father protecting his family, a woman defending her dignity against a stalker or rapist, a policeman or a soldier in a risky intervention to protect people in danger. 2. COURAGE. Understood as bravery, determination and vehemence with which an action is undertaken, especially facing the enemy or a danger or difficulty. Courage is a powerful force of will that becomes ability at the moment to overcome oneself and to face bravely difficulties. To develop it we train our students through certain exercises so that if difficulties arise in a real situation they will be better prepared to overcome them.

Combat Hapkido 3. EFFORT. Understood as the force with which a person intends to achieve a goal and often also require other great values such as patience, perseverance, confidence and hope to do so. In our classes we work this on different aspects: Instructor teaching and leading, students learning, and everyone helping their mates. Moreover, with the values of courage and effort is being

developed at the same time something as valuable as is the spirit of achievement (from oneself in relation his objectives or adversities). 4. KNOWLEDGE. Understood as the wisdom and e x p e r i e n c e t h a t a p e r s o n a c q u i re s o n a s p e c i f i c subject (in this case about Self Defense). To achieve

i t n e e d s m o t i v a t i o n , i n t e re s t t o l e a r n w e l l , w i t h intelligence and always seeking excellence in learning. We also refer to be "people with knowledge" and "to use it with knowledge" those things they l e a r n e d , t h a t i s t o b e s e n s i b l e a n d re s p o n s i b l e people. All this is what we try to constantly emphasize in our classes.

5. RESPECT. Understood as the recognition and consideration that is due to other people. But at the same time it has to be mutual among all people for proper interaction. And not only with others but with oneself recognizing his human dignity, avoiding what hurts and achieving a healthy self esteem. In our classes the authority is the Instructor who must be treated with respect

Combat Hapkido for his students, and also the Instructor must treat all students with respect and kindness. 6. SOLIDARITY. Understood as the altruistic help is offered to a person, especially in difficult situations. It is the base of other great values such as generosity, friendship, comradeship, loyalty and honor. In our classes it is translated in a genuine help by the Instructor and students, with patience and good will to help who need it most as it can be a beginner student or who by his personal or professional situation he needs a more attention. Although good people always feel good doing good, this help is due to empathy without expecting anything in return. And surely the person who was helped, at the first opportunity, he will feel inclined to do the same with others that in their circumstances need his support. 7. GRATITUDE. Understood as the feeling of appreciation for a benefit acquired. Feeling gratitude, the person desires to reciprocate in some way. It is not so much to return it with another equally, but show affection and appreciate this act of generosity and goodness. In our classes we have many occasions to cultivate gratitude: when one appreciates the

technical help, support and good personal attention of his mates and his Instructor, when one appreciates the benefits of everything related about classes, etc. While ingratitude is a nasty and petty behavior, gratitude gives wellness both the giver and the receiver. 8. HONESTY. Understood as the set of personal qualities such as decency, honesty, justice, righteousness and integrity. Far from resorting to lies, traps or subterfuges to achieve certain objectives, honest

person always stands up for truth and he is upright in the words, intentions and deeds. As Lucius Annaeus Seneca said almost 2,000 years ago: “Quod non vetat lex, hoc vetat fieri pudor, that is "What is not prohibited by law, it is prohibited by honesty". In our classes we try to avoid people with unethical, dishonest attitudes. We want just the opposite: we try to give the best of ourselves, to improve as honest and fair people. 9. LOYALTY. Understood as a not to betray who has given us his

Combat Hapkido confidence, or has helped us or treated us kindly, and disrespecting the group to which he belongs freely. Loyalty is a correspond, a moral commitment we have with others. In our classes loyalty is cultivated in all dimensions: between students, Instructors, Masters, Combat Hapkido system and Federation, and its founder Grandmaster John Pellegrini. Loyalty is something elemental based on trust and respect. 10. HUMILITY. Understood as recognizing that, although everyone has a dignity and value irrefutable, and perhaps with some outstanding qualities and achievements, no one is above the others. We all have defects and virtues. Therefore, a humble person does not use his own talents to be "above" the others but to be "at the service" of others without room for pride, egotism, arrogance, vanity or contempt in relation other people, all of them different and unique but exactly equal in dignity. Evidently, this value is very demanded in our classes because it is essential for a healthy and enriching interaction among all members of the group, from beginners to Instructors and Masters. Nobody is perfect, but it is smart to try to improve and move towards the good. It is a matter of good attitude and to create an enabling environment. So if we strive to cultivate all these ethical and human values, if we strive to give the best of ourselves, (and if it is with good humor, even better!) undoubtedly we will improve a lot as combatants and as people. Sherlock Holmes's Martial Art Mikel Gonzรกlez

The art of Bartitsu would have been forgotten, if Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wouldn't have briefly mentioned it in the famous detective's history, "The Empty House", in which Holmes tells how he survived his bout against Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls, "When I reached the ledge he was trapped, he didn't draw any weapon, but threw himself on me and wrapped me with his long arms. He knew he had lost the game and he was just eager to take revenge on me. And so we grappled furiously while trying to maintain balance on the slippery edge of the waterfall.

detective tried unsuccessfully to find out about this mysterious and secret Martial Art. It's worth noting that except in the English editions, the term "baritsu" didn't appear in the pages of that history, being replaced by Jiujitsu in some versions, or deleted in others. It may be that, writing for the Pearson’s Magazine in the late nineteenth century, neither Conan-Doyle nor BartonWright had knowledge of Bartitsu and so they wrote it badly spelled, or it was just a typographical error, as happened in a report on it published in 1900. It was not until Martial Arts historian Richard Bowen, along with other historians like Y. Hirayama, J. Hall, and James Webb, discovered in the Pearson’s Magazine a few articles written by a stranger named Barton-Wright. These articles were republished for a web magazine of Martial Arts and sciences. The following year, historians, writers and Martial Arts practitioners formed the Bartitsu Society, whose purpose was that of investigating and reviving what it was concluded to have been Sherlock Holmes's secret Martial Art.

History

“The Art of Bartitsu also included a complete method of physical training similar to what today would be the crossfit or the like.

Western Arts Nowadays, thanks to the new films about the adventures of Conan-Doyle's detective, the art of Bartitsu is enjoying a growing and new interest; that's why we will try in this article to pay tribute both to Bartitsu and its creator, Edward William Barton-Wright. To begin with, I will make a brief summary of who was Barton-Wright. Edward William BartonWright was born in Bangalore, India, in 1860, the son of William Barton-Wright, a British railroad engineer, and his wife Jane. During his youth he was interested in self-defense systems and he studied various methods both as a child, during the family trips, and later as an adult, in his work of civilian engineer, such as Boxing, Wrestling, fencing and Savate French boxing. In 1895 he went to Japan to work for E. H. Hunter Company, in Kobe and Tokyo, where he learned Shinden Fudo Ryu Jiujitsu and Kodokan Judo for three years. He returned to London in 1898, where he began publishing a series of articles in Pearson's Magazine, between 1899 and 1901, to showcase his creation, a new method of self-defense called Bartitsu, a contraction of his name and "Jiujitsu", which Barton-Wright affirmed it meant "self-defense in all its forms". Bartitsu consisted initially of Jiujitsu, Judo and English Boxing (actually it was Pugilism, being bare-knuckle boxing), to which, once established in London, Barton-Wright added French Savate and a style of defense with the "canne" (combat stick), that had been perfected by Pierre Vigny, from Switzerland. The Art of Bartitsu also included a complete method of physical training similar to what today would be the crossfit or the like. The Bartitsu was based on three basic combat principles: 1. To disturb the equilibrium of your assailant. 2. To surprise him before he has time to regain his balance and use his strength. 3. If necessary, to make use of control and immobilization techniques. The effectiveness of Bartitsu consisted of covering the four combat distances: - Long: using the techniques of the combat stick (the canne); apart from the stick, it was also taught the use of the stiletto. - Middle: kicking techniques, Savate. - Short: boxing or pugilism, in combination with Jiujitsu-Judo projections or controls. - Ground: Jiujitsu - Judo immobilizations and completions. In his articles, Barton-Wright, described the Bartitsu as the method of defense with which gentlemen and ladies could ensure, as far as it is possible, immunity against injury in cowardly attacks or quarrels, mainly because of the particularly difficult times for the urban population, by the large number of street thugs and gangsters who lived in the big cities during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The Bartitsu system was designed as a method of urban self-defense, so that men and women could live and travel without fear of being attacked, both at home and abroad. The Bartitsu Club, located at no. 67b Shaftesbury Avenue in Soho, was the place where Barton-Wright established his school, to which he called Bartitsu Academy of Arms and

Western Arts Physical Culture, informally known as the Bartitsu Club. In an article for Sandow's Magazine of Physical Culture vol. 6, (January 1901), journalist Mary Nugent described the Bartitsu Club as "... a huge subterranean hall, all glittering, white-tiled walls, and electric light, with 'champions' prowling around it like tigers." Via correspondence with Master Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, and other contacts in Japan, BartonWright arranged for Japanese Jujutsu and Judo practitioners K. Tani, S. Yamamoto and Yukio Tani to travel to London and serve as instructors at the Bartitsu Club. K. Tani and Yamamoto soon returned to Japan, but Yukio Tani stayed and was shortly joined by another young Jujutsu fighter, Sadakazu "Raku" Uyenishi. Swiss master-at-arms Pierre Vigny and wrestler Armand Cherpillod were also hired as instructors at the Club. Besides teaching wealthy Londoners, their duties included performing demonstrations and competing in challenge matches against fighters representing other combat styles. In addition, the Club became the headquarters for a group of practitioners of classic

fencing commanded by Captain Alfred Hutton and it served as a base to experience techniques of ancient fencing, which they later taught to the most important members of the London theater world for use in scenic fighting on the stage. In mid-1901, the Bartitsu curriculum was again expanded to include breathing exercises under the teaching of Mrs. Kate Behnke. In addition to the combat training hall, the Bartitsu Club incorporated a well-appointed salon equipped with a wide range of electrotherapy machines. The Club was organized on the model of the Victorian sporting club; prospective members submitted their applications to a committee, which at one time included both, Captain Alfred Hutton and Colonel George Malcolm Fox, former Inspector-General of the British Army's Physical Training Corps. New members first attended private classes before they could participate in group classes. There is no evidence that there was a formal syllabus defined for members of the club, although Barton-Wright encouraged them to

History study each of the four main styles of combat taught in the club. The aim was to master each style well enough so that it could be used against the others, if necessary. This process resembled the modern concept of cross-training. Based on the writings of BartonWright, you could say that, at the hitting distance, the art of Bartitsu highlighted Vigny's combat system with baton, while at the grappling distance it put the emphasis on Jiujitsu. The Savate and Boxing methods were used as intermediate between the two previous systems, or as a first response if the person didn't have a walking stick at hand at the moment of the aggression. Both Boxing and Savate were adapted from their sports form to self-defense due to the difference in training, both academically and physically. Many of the technique sequences of self-defense and Bartitsu training were described in the Barton-Wright's articles published in Pearson's Magazine. Captain Laing did the same with specific details of combat exercises with the walking stick. Way ahead of the current MMA competitions, Barton-Wright and his instructors promoted Bartitsu through

Western Arts “The Bartitsu Club was among the first schools of its kind in Europe to offer specialized self-defense classes for women. This custom was adopted also after its closure by its instructors. “ exhibitions and public challenges against fighters of any style. That's why Bartitsu has been sometimes called the first Mixed Martial Art, combining both Western and Oriental martial disciplines. We don't really know the exact reason, but before 1903, the Bartitsu club closed its doors. Among the rumors of the causes, it was cited the excessive price of the registration and instruction fees, as well as the fact that the fame of the Jujitsu and its instructors, who eventually opened their own schools in London, eclipsed that of Barton-Wright and the Bartitsu. It is said that Barton-Wright continued developing and teaching Bartitsu until the 20's, but he failed to regain his fame. Barton-Wright spent the rest of his life working as a physiotherapist specializing in innovative and sometimes controversial forms of therapy based on heat, light and radiation, and using the name Bartitsu as references to these activities. In 1950, he died at the age of 90 years, broke and forgotten, buried in what historian Richard Bowen described as "a poor man's grave". The Bartitsu Club was among the first schools of its kind in Europe to offer specialized self-defense classes for women. This custom was adopted also after its closure by its instructors. Among the women who followed the teachings of Bartitsu, and then of Jiujitsu, was Edith Margaret Garrud, who later taught and trained the suffragettes, including their team of suffragette’s bodyguards. Also, along with her husband, she opened her own Martial Arts dojo - the first dojo in Europe opened by a woman - and created the first association between selfdefense training and the political philosophy of feminism. Emily Watts was also her pupil. At present there exist two fields of study of the Bartitsu: the canonical Bartitsu, which are the self-

defense sequences that were detailed by Barton-Wright and his assistants between 1899 and1902, and the NeoBartitsu, which are the moder n, personalized interpretations, obtained from the training manuals of the Bartitsu Club former instructors and students between, 1905 and early 20s. In 2005 the Bartistu Society published the Bartitsu Compendium, edited by Tony Wolf and available only in English. The Compendium illustrates in detail the complete history of the art, as well as a technical course of canonical Bartitsu. In 2008 a second volume, which included resources for the Neo-Bartitsu obtained from both the writings of Barton-Wright and the self-defense manuals of his colleagues and students of these, as Yukio Tani, Raku, William Garrud and HG Lang, was published also in English. Since 2006, the Bartitsu Society has a website, bartitsu.org, which includes information about the history, theory and practice of Bartitsu, and also about the groups and circles of Bartitsu fans, which, according to the model of the Bartitsu Society, have created centers and teach classes in various countries like, UK, USA, Italy, Russia and, more recently, Israel and Spain. Occasionally practical seminars of the system are given, being especially appreciated in the Steampunk congresses and about the Edwardian era. Live or die? (Warring peace) A part from humans the other superior mammals, don't have awareness or consciousness of their own death; even when they can sense it in the case of terminal illness. This is also the reason why they have no sense of the before, during and the after, nor emotion for what is out there or in the void. That is why only three of the seven areas of vital action are active in these mammals. These seven vital areas of action, because of his awareness of death, characterize the human being and they are survival, sexuality, and fights for power, emotions, verbal communication, rational processes and altered states of consciousness. The human being has broken the Mechanisms of inhibition of aggressiveness (MIA), he has perverted hierarchical fights, he has tried to heighten his fear through religion and culture, his self-centeredness has prevailed above even the most elementary sense of respect, and he has motivated his destructive and selfdestructing tendencies until he has ended up being the victim of his own trap, a way of life that doesn't go much beyond a camouflaged and unsatisfactory kind of "warring peace." Wars among different ethnic groups, just like xenophobia, are closely related with the displacement of the pathological aggression contained in the own ethnos. The difficulty that exists for spontaneous expression of aggression takes the form of the "necessity for war, always more or less justified" that looks instinctively to the outside in order to avoid internal fratricide. In the final count, the individuals of other ethnic groups are rich competitors in the battle of the species that can transform themselves in order to survive. The inert bodies of warriors will nourish the fields and in future times they will feed their descendants once again transformed into proteins by the plants and animals that sustain them. They can also be used in rituals to calm the anger of the gods or to request their protection. The more populated and promiscuous a nation is and the bigger the number of regions and ethnic groups that it unites (those that fought each other prior to unification, spend their aggressive tendencies), the greater will be the

pathological ballast as well as the necessity to discharge it inside or outside of its own borders. The more pluralistic the tensions and dissatisfactions that exist, the more synergy will multiply the necessity for violent action to spend the surplus energy. It is obvious that in the same proportion that the frontiers are reduced, the probabilities of a conflagration among States increase. It is no less obvious that they will increase in means of compensation, for this aggressive pathology: competitiveness, political terrorism, drugaddiction, unconscious vandalism or civic violence and madness. This is the unsatisfactory state of "warring peace" in which we find ourselves, and from which we cannot escape as long as we don’t arbitrate procedures that allow us to liberate our natural aggression in a creative and enriching way. Nevertheless, there does exist a natural way of violence by which pathological violence can be destroyed. The recognition and later inclusion in the social norms of these natural ways would avoid the crescendo of pathological and perverted violence that, like a roaring and uncontrollable volcano can be felt growing in our hearts. These natural ways are the softest and significant expressions of that natural violence. i.e. when we kill a rabbit with a good blow to the nape to avoid its suffering; pulling out the tip of an arrow from a wound; the expression of passion buried in a dance of courtship; or the orgasmic pleasure in sexual friction. A "natural violence" exists, we live life with more fullness, pleasure and joy, a "warring attitude" that enables us to avoid the violence and the "peaceful" violence that alienates us. Peace cannot be limited to the absence of war, or for fear of the uncontrollable consequences of a nuclear, chemical or bacterial. This is a fear that is nourished below the quiet daily struggle, without armed barricades, each against each other. It is the fight of the disenchanted, the stressed and the morally harassed at work and at home that already affects forty million workers in the European Union.

“A natural violence" exists. To live life with more pleasure and joy, a warring attitude" that enables us to avoid the violence and the "peaceful" violence that alienate us must be embraced

We are pleased to present the second work of the KMRED group. Justo DiĂŠguez Anger and Love have no limits

"There is no greater freedom than being what we are meant to be, in fact only when we value ourselves, we can share those values with others, but we must start with ourselves." Justo DiĂŠguez

Keysi

Justo DiĂŠguez Budo International: Is Keysi a thought? Justo diĂŠguez: To understand the Keysi method, we must first understand who we are, in a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual way. One of our principles is that Keysi doesn't belong to the Mind, Keysi belongs to the no-mind; in Keysi you know when a person is "Mental" or "no-Mental". The mind itself is pure technique; a mental person analyzes each of his or her movements, seeks a perfect technique or approaching as close as possible to that technique, an art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, from teachers to students and so on and in a superficial way, because the mind is only a passage through which you can feel your body; the no-mind is realization, not a thought, therefore it doesn't belong to the mind. For the one who seeks spontaneity through the mind, whatever he does, it will turn out impossible for him; in the search of instinct, you will get nowhere if the mind is the threshold, because it will be only a movement based on a thought and followed by an action; and I'm sure it can be a wonderful and perfect technique for those who carry it out following that mind pattern, but that is not relevant, that is just performing a concrete form or kata. Imagine Bruce Lee, how many people have dreamed of being like him? How many continue to imitate him? You will be nothing more than a copy; you can't adopt a position and get knowledge. B.I.: How do you define the "nomind"?

Keysi J.D.: No-mind is the absence of thought; action is like a shadow that follows the body, and both of them form just one single and indivisible entity. Only because you adopt some specific movements, you don't achieve inner knowledge, things don't happen in that order; in Keysi, the inner phenomenon occurs first and then follows the position. Just consider this example I'm giving you, basing yourself on your own experience: when you get angry all your body reacts in a special way; you adopt a particular position; your eyes, your face express themselves in a particular way; anger comes from within you and your body follows, but not only from the inside out, also from the outside in; your whole chemistry is altered, your blood, your breath, you're ready to act; what I'm trying to say is that anger begins within you, that's the way it first happens, and the result is that the body follows. Now try to do it the other way around: make your eyes get red, breathe faster, make the blood circulate faster, can you do it? Sure you can! But you will only be acting, interpreting a role, there's nothing happening inside you, you can't create anger within yourself; when you start from the outside, all you do is creating a false state; the real thing starts from within, from your center, and then the waves reach the periphery, you have to start from there, action arises only from the inside; if you don't know who you are, if you only recognize your body without deepening inside you, it'll just be a reaction that follows a thought, "it won’t be an action". B.I.: Aren’t we our own masters? J.D.: When someone insults us, we react, it's like pressing the "on" button on our TV; if they insult you, you react furiously and probably strike the one who has done it; that's not action, that's reaction. Check it out and look at it from this point of view: the one who insults you is trying to provoke you,

“Imagine Bruce Lee, how many people have dreamed of being like him? How many continue to imitate him? You will be nothing more than a copy; you can't adopt a position and get knowledge.”

Justo DiĂŠguez manipulate you; and that's what people do, they manipulate you as if you were a light bulb, they switch you on and off. Let me give you an example: when someone praises you, your ego inflates like a balloon and that makes you feel fantastically well; now somebody comes along and pops the balloon; and what happens? You end up collapsing, and that is what I mean: anyone can destroy our best moment, we don't belong to ourselves, we act as others manipulate us. In Keysi, we develop a principle of control of the area; this teaches us to be aware of what is happening in our environment; to be affected by whatever happens in that environment and react, we would have to be a receptor and being a receptor is to accept the manipulation; but if during the observation of the environment you stay calm and do not accept manipulation, what can our opponents do? This way of understanding the control of the area makes you aware and when you have the knowledge of what is happening in your environment, "set in motion" the systems that act from the unconscious and without having a knowledge of the environment, and they "react"; recognizing the environment is not based on observation, observing is only one aspect to act.

The Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a system based on both weapons and empty hands at the same time. It incorporates many of the new-generation weapons, swords, knives, circular kerambits, bars, batons of different lengths and other more particular weapons. Even in our empty hand training methods we face an opponent who attacks us with weapons in both hands, as well as several opponents at once. This type of training makes us more aware of everything that happens during an altercation and what do and not do when facing one or more armed aggressors. In this second DVD, Maha Guru Horacio Rodrigues, heir to the lineage of Pendekar Pak Victor De Thouars, of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak, addresses its particular way to train and use the different weapons, laying the foundations for more advanced future plans of study and the application of technique. This video includes the principles of work, angulation, Sambuts, Jurus and drills with the short sword "Pedang", short knife "Pissau", short stick "Tonkat Matjan", Sarong, and applications of selfdefense with empty hands.

As we have documented over the past 6 years, Kyusho translates as "Vital Point" and is a study of the human condition and it's frailties. Although similar in appearance to the ancient acupuncture and pressure point massage methods, the Kyusho method can also deal with immediacy for certain trauma as well as easily rid the body of common ailments. Within seconds we canm begin to relax and ease the pain associated with headaches, backaches, muscle and internal cramps, hiccups, asthma, nausea, sinus congestion and so many more common maladies both of natural causes as well as trauma inflicted. This is all performed quickly and efficiently without expensive pills or drugs that can take 20 minutes or more to work or have serious side effects on other organs or body functions. The ramifications are enormous and we believe to be of such worth for continued research and societal benefit. This type of holistic approach has been effective for many thousands of years in cultures throughout the world and we have added even more possibility and purpose to it for you. Once you learn these simple methods of Kyusho First Aide, you too can help your family and friends with many of these common ailments we each suffer through. Let this serve as an historical record of how these methods developed and the other health possibilities they hold for day-to-day living. However it is not the full curriculum, as one would expect, the depth and intricacies can only be conveyed with hands on application and practice under the watchful eye of an instructor. The consistent practice of these methods will not only increase your abilities to relieve the practiced formulas, but also instruct you in the intuitive application of many other health issues. They should not be considered standalone formulas, but rather ways to correct certain problems within the human body based on the foundation presented.

WingTsun When a person is engaged in a group or a specific activity, is frequent that he or she doesn't realize that the values or typical behavior of such group or activity can be quite irrational. In the WingTsun environment, for example, it's rather usual to find behaviors that are downright absurd and that we however accept undeterred. One of such conducts is sectarianism. By sectarianism I understand here to learn and train exclusively with a specific master and his disciples. For example, if Sifu X is my teacher, it's not acceptable that I attend a seminar or take classes with Sifu Y, even if both teachers are students of Yip Man and have a more or less acceptable relationship (and I don't mean cases where there is a declared hostility or manifest conflict, I'm talking about sifus that get along well). Not only that, I won't even train with that sifu's students; and what is more, if I do it I will be condemned by an act of treason or adultery, or as you prefer.

“The former Yip Man's "brothers" didn't hesitate to accuse him of having mixed WT with other systems and betrayed the school.

Taows Academy

WingTsun Tell me, dear reader, doesn't all this this sound familiar to you? Have you ever met someone in this situation? If you have been practicing martial arts for years, I'm sure you know exactly what I mean. Moreover, I am convinced that many, on having read this, will not have seen anything wrong in the above mentioned attitude, but quite the opposite. They will speak of fidelity to the master, the school, the style, traditional values ... Now let's look at it in another context, for example that of a doctor, an engineer or a scientist who, supposedly, aspire to progress and excellence. Imagine that these professionals say: "I will not study, or attend conferences or classes that are not taught by Professor X or by the teaching staff of University X". Do you think this attitude is the smartest? Do they think that Professor X is omniscient, and no one can know or discover anything that he doesn't know? We would all consider such ideas as proper of a paranoiac mind.

Is it WT - or Martial Arts in general such a different science? Do you think that a style like WT (or any other) is something absolutely perfect, which was magically conceived as a complete and finished art? Do you really believe that your master is someone absolutely perfect, and therefore there is nothing else to be learnt or any possibility of progressing if it's not under his omniscient guidance and instruction? Perhaps you haven't yet realized, but we all often think or act that way. One thing is choosing a master and a school and work with perseverance and discipline to complete its learning, which is perfectly reasonable, and quite another is that once you have achieved sufficient skill and experience, you have no interest in knowing nothing more.

“Any sifu, even with a complete mastery of the whole system, will anyway have a certain specialty or some aspect in which he or she stands out.

WingTsun Actually, the tendency to sectarianism goes back a long way and it's something we have inherited from the Asian masters themselves. For example, Grandmaster Yip Man couldn't avoid receiving sectarian criticism when, after having practiced WT at the School of Chan Wag Sun (a pupil of Leung Yang), he moved to Hong Kong to attend University. There he met Leung Bik, son of Leung Jan, and therefore his "uncle" of Kung Fu. With he studied the WT deepest principles. A few years later he returned to Fat Shan and his fellow students were able to appreciate his very obvious improvements in his WT: in other words none of his school "big brothers" could rival him (Yip Man did not spar with Ng Whig So, who had been his direct instructor in Fat Shan, apart from GM Chan Wag Su, out of respect for the person who had been his main teacher). The former Yip Man's "brothers" didn't hesitate to accuse him of having mixed WT with other systems and betrayed the school. Let's observe the reaction: Instead of asking him how he had managed to beat the oldest students who, at least theoretically, were superior to him, they simply discredited him accusing him of "adulterating" the style. In other words, confronted with a real and indisputable fact, that is, that Yip Man had progressed far more than them despite having less time practicing WT, they didn't try to obtain the knowledge that could enable them to achieve such progress; instead, they chose to condemn the "heretic". Now if such a fuss was created just for having taken classes with a

WingTsun companion of his master, imagine what could have happened if Yip Man would have evolved for having practiced another style. So as we can see, sectarianism is an obstacle to progress. But so it is changing the style and the teacher at every step. Learning has its own stages and the beginnings are quite different from the ends. You can't evaluate a method by its basic levels. The smart thing is to take time to choose a system and a teacher. Internet or books may not be a valid reference: personal experience is what counts. Ask politely the teacher to practice with you, so that he can show his skills in a sparring exercise. But don't settle with that. Also observe his pupils. The value of a school is demonstrated by the level of the students. And when you have found your Sifu, practice with him up to complete his style and then, once having acquired the relevant skills, and with a formed criteria, you can, if you have such concern, to explore what lies "beyond the border" to develop yourself. And for that, you need not putting aside or disowning your roots... Obviously, the comparison between what one does and what others do, can lead to some insecurity and conflict. And is not the same having divergent views about the economy or the physics of particles, than Martial Arts. Because while other types of knowledge need not physical confrontation to establish themselves, Martial Arts deal precisely with combat. So differences of opinion cannot be fixed just with words, however eloquent they may be; the palpable demonstration is needed. One can beat another playing tennis or chess, but defeat in combat poses a risk to the physical integrity and a much more destructive impact on our ego. This does not mean that the way to compare the various technical opinions has to be a death match. In the Kung Fu environment there are mechanisms to determine what is real in a "friendly" way; combat with rules, with controlled blows, with protections. And especially in WT, the test of sticky hands (ChiSau, Tuishou). Even in professional combat sports, there are times in which two friends or two brothers are bound to face each other. Thus friendly confrontation is possible. And therefore we can know and evolve in any other field.

Taows Academy “Grandmaster Yip Man couldn't avoid receiving sectarian criticism when, after having practiced WT at the School of Chan Wag Sun (a pupil of Leung Yang), he moved to Hong Kong to attend University.

WingTsun What benefits derive from expanding our experiences? Any sifu, even with a complete mastery of the whole system, will anyway have a certain specialty or some aspect in which he or she stands out. One can be an excellent teacher, another can be very good with weapons; some may have more experience in the police or military work, or in self-defense, others in the field of health, Chi Kung or Chinese Medicine, or it's even possible to find some sifu who is a real expert in the history of the style, in a concrete area, when it comes to look for a teacher who is more specialized in that particular topic. Another aspect that you have to take into account is that each expert adapts the art to his or her own physical and psychological characteristics: weight, stature, arm span, flexibility, strength, aggressive attitude, intelligence, coordination, etc. To really learn with someone is inevitable seeing the art through the strengths and weaknesses of that person, which may be very different from ours. Once acquired the advanced level, we can search other instructors who, because of their needs, have had to develop their art in a different way which perhaps is more effective for us. It's true that the Chinese tradition stipulated that within the same clan or style you could only have one sifu. And it's also true that tradition forbade teaching people who were not Chinese, so I don't consider that both traditions are very useful. Anyway, it is possible to maintain the idea of a

single sifu and study with others. Si (Shi, Professor) Fu (father) is a title that depends on there being the master-disciple relationship. This relationship is established in China when the PAI-SI (Bai Shi) ceremony is performed: PAI (o Bai, means bowing, revere; is to kneel down and bend the trunk as a sign of respect and submission), and SI (Shi, professor). You may see some of these ceremonies on the Internet. Your sifu is analogous to your father in Kung Fu: he has seen your birth in the art and has guided you while you were growing up to become adult (i.e., until you learned the entire system). Therefore, your sifu will always be one. Once you're an adult can study with the sifu of your sifu: (your Sigung: grandfather teacher) or with the colleagues of your sifu (SIPAK or SISOK: uncle teachers, major and minor), but they will not be your sifu; they will be your Sigung , Sisok, Sipak, etc. I see no contradiction between one thing and the other. Yip Man's sifu was Chan Wag Sun; Leung Bik was his Sipak. But today many sifu no longer perform PAI-SI, for various reasons (a Catholic, a Jew or a Muslim might consider the ceremony idolatry, especially if the sifu is an "infidel"). Possibly a new masterdisciple would be much more beneficial for both parties. Let's imagine that in every city, experts from the various WT branches, and even from several different styles of Martial Arts, would gather

Taows Academy

WingTsun together periodically to share experiences and knowledge so as to make their arts grow. Let's imagine that, just like scientists and professional athletes do, their eagerness was that of finding out new and improved training methods. And let's also imagine that, leaving out their egos, they would practice seeking to know their strengths and weaknesses. I think that soon there would be incredible progress: a kind of High Performance Martial Arts Center in which all aspects (Combat, Health, Philosophy, History, Culture, Empty Hand, Weapons, etc.) could be scientifically developed, where the most advanced technologies could be trained to facilitate learning. I, for my part, would certainly not have any objection that my students also belonged to other associations and learn with other teachers. I believe that you cannot put fences to the sea in the age of globalization. And although I know it is really difficult to get something of the like (many interests of various kinds ...), why not meeting at least once a year to share? What happens when two people practice Chi-Sao, what is the meaning of their practice and what the objectives? In this 3rd DVD, "Chi Sao from the base to an advanced level," Sifu Salvador SĂĄnchez addresses perhaps the most important aspect of Wing Chun: ChiSao, the soul of the system itself, which provides the practitioner with some special characteristics which are completely different from others, and gives him great virtues. This role deals with some aspects quite basic in principle, but as you delve into them, they'll be surprising to you. It is a very clear feature traditional Chinese culture; what it's very obvious at first glance, it nevertheless contains a second or third reading, which will surely change your approach, practice and understanding. We will discuss how to practice Chi Sao through our working drills and how to apply those drills, that ability in a sparring, linking certain concepts, perhaps not so much tied to traditional Kung Fu, such as biomechanics, structures, knowledge of physics, etc., in order to obtain better results in our practice.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai conditioning, the true secret of effectiveness The great interest raised in the West by the spreading of martial Muay Thai or Muay Boran, has made many instructors concentrate in an almost exclusive way on the novelty and peculiarity of the technical element. This is done to the detriment of the study of the fundamental principles of the discipline. In the case of Muay Thai and its martial version (Muay Boran), the pillars on which the whole system has been built still remain. The principles of the training, and the purely technical study of the different offensive and defensive actions, create the explosive cocktail that everybody knows.

Muay Thai

he task of those responsible for this discipline and who represent the International IMFT Federation, is to tirelessly help its own instructors rediscover the path that got them to their current level and stress once again the practice of the basic principles of the discipline. The training principles of the system can be resumed in 2 elements: physical conditioning and basic technical preparation. That practitioner who, after overcoming the first training phase, wants to change his focus of interest from the field of self-defense to professional combat, will have to ask his instructor to help him "advance" in the practice area he wants. Any complete martial system puts equal stress on the physical, technical and mental formation of the practitioner, without overlooking any of these three basic components. The work on the basic principles creates and maintains the conditions to become a good martial artist or a valid sports fighter. Muay Thai physical conditioning attempts to develop a high resistance level in three fundamental aspects: bones, muscles and nerves. The bony parts with which we execute blows and block our opponent's attacks, harden up to incredible levels: shine bone, elbows, knees and - in Muay Boran - the hands all become true weapons, through meticulous and specific impact work with the appropriate instruments. At the muscular level, the Thai boxer trains to develop characteristics common to hitters and fighters, given that Muay Thai is a "hybrid" discipline that

T

Muay Thai

integrates numerous technical phases, based on the exchange of blows, alternating them with more or less long phases of combat. The necessary reflexes in attack and defense actions become automatic during conditioned or free Sparring sessions where stress is paid to the technical elements - fists, kicks, holds, blocks and so on. Now we will study in detail the basic instruments for developing the incredible characteristics of the fighters, for which Thai boxers are so famous in the world. • Impact Training (training with Thai Pads, bag, kick-shield, focus gloves). This type of exercise is in some way the mark of the Muay Thai factory, especially in the use of the Thai Pads. The principle of hitting a more or less mobile target with maximum strength is already present in all the Martial Arts: although it is certain that the use of this system (fundamental in Muay Thai from the first training sessions) is very spread in the practice of this hard Thai discipline. With the help of an expert instructor training with the Thai Pads - can have a significance that goes beyond the pure execution of a preestablished attack on a moving target. In fact, the practitioner will be able to execute non preestablished attacks and defenses freely and the instructor will respond by attacking or defending with the use of the paos at the right moment. Moreover, if from the first few classes a student systematically and progressively hits the bag with all the natural weapons of the body - except for the head – he will develop that hardness and bony resistance that makes the expert Thai boxer into a living weapon. • Conditioned Sparring (pre-established attacks and defenses or combats that follow a particular topic). The attack and defense actions have to be included in a real environment of confrontation with an opponent from the first few exercises. A sense of distance and timing with those that help us are

Muay Thai

indispensable elements with which to apply the learned theory to practice. The exchange of combined or semi-free blows is always one of the fundamental methods to develop these fighting capacities used in the discipline of Thai combat. In comparison to free sparring, in this type of practice the element of stress that exists in free exercise is lacking since the student doesn't have to worry about receiving blows. Instead he will concentrate on the development of his own timing, attempting more and more complex combinations and techniques that he would not attempt in other contexts for fear of being hit. For this exercise Boxing gloves and shin guards are enough and, in some special cases protective vests. The supervision of an expert instructor is indispensable in order to avoid accidents when you do all the sparring exercises, including those that follow a particular topic. • Grappling (training for combat and throws, combat and blows, combat with throws and blows). The type of Intensity used with Impact training and conditioned Sparring exercises, should be integrated with the exercises of Grappling or close fighting in order to prepare the practitioner for real situations. In fact, in real combat when the distance between you and your opponent decreases to close range, the physical component of the combat radically changes and if you are not specifically prepared in Chap Ko - the Muay Boran style of close fighting you risk losing your combat capacity quickly. Always directed by an expert instructor, the practitioners will train in the practice of Grappling, to prepare their musculature (mainly that of the neck, the back and the arms) and the cardiovascular system to do long isometric exercises combined with the necessary energy explosions to execute quick actions like projections or blows (blows, nudges or butts) at a minimum distance. In this type of training with combat and blows we have to be protected with groin cup and other types of body protection and, in the case of professional fighters helmets as well.

Muay Thai

• Free Sparring (training controlled by the use of protection for the whole body: helmet, shin guards, boxing gloves, mouth protection, cup and vest). Although in most cases the Muay Boran practitioner doesn't want to try out his fighting abilities in a competition, free combat practice in the gym is fundamental to try out his physical level of preparation. When we are under the effects of extreme stress it is very difficult to react in an appropriate way when faced with an attack, and so if we can recreate a similar situation this offers the practitioner the possibility to test his acquired skills. Also, with careful Sparring preparation, you develop the habit of receiving blows, deliver them in an appropriate way, learning how not to absorb the attack and how to react with effectiveness. This last point is a fundamental element in each combat or Self-Defense system as it is based fully on reality, and consequently should be part of the outline of each practitioner's training.

Comprehensive or Integral Vovinam is simply going back to the Founder's true Vovinam. The goal of the founder was clearly and openly declared: "Harvesting effective techniques, assimilate their essence and transform them into Vovinam techniques", and indeed this concept still remains in force and is mandatory for all Vovinam Masters in the world. Vovinam is then a research concept to achieve a super effective style. However, today 90% of Vovinam teachers forget it and bend to a program too loaded, too fixed, too aesthetic and sometimes completely ineffective in numerous techniques. Comprehensive Vovinam is simply rediscovering the original essence of Master Nguyen Loc's art. For that, we have the principles, the basic techniques, and we just have to go back to work out the effective way of every technique and apply the founding principle. In this DVD, by the hand of Master Patrick Levet, we will study the basis of Integral Vovinam, threats and knife attacks, integral counterattacks, and defense against Dam Thang (direct fist) Dam Moc (hook punch), Dam Lao (javelin punch) as well as basic leg levers.
