In this comprehensive instructional video, Andreas Weitzel, founder and head instructor of the SYSTEMA Academy Weitzel (Augsburg, Germany) and one of the leading SYSTEMA Instructors in Europe explains the most important fighting fundamentals. First he vividly elucidates how to walk naturally focusing on the correct execution of steps. He then shows how to use this work in combat applications. A variety of different topics are explained in this movie including: How to unbalance an attacker; How to strike and kick correctly; How to defend against, grabs, throws, strikes and kicks. The explanations in this video are simple but clear with the aim for easy comprehension and lear ning for everyone. During his explanation Andreas always includes and focuses on the most important principles and fundamentals of SYSTEMA by showing how different topics are tightly linked to each other. Furthermore free and spontaneous work against different attacks including weapons is shown under realistic conditions and full speed. In this video Andreas is assisted and supported by Michael Hazenbeller (Rastatt) and Thomas Gößler (Augsburg), two experienced Systema Instructors.

"Ignorance affirms or denies wholeheartedly. Science doubts." (Voltaire) verything is adaptation. Everything adjusts, fits, becomes acclimated. Life is a continuous process of self-correction on the basis of this premise. Consciously, and especially unconsciously, our bodies, minds, groups and societies, follow the universal patter n of adapting. Change is the only permanent thing in itself, and what doesn't adapt because of rigidity simply breaks and concludes. The times we live in are times piled up in changes. Changes accelerated in changes. Time compresses itself and so do the cycles. What once would have probably taken thousands of years, today we get to see it in cycles of days, hours or minutes. Acceleration is another constant of our time and is here to stay. Acceleration is analogous to heat. When space-time compresses, the molecules rotate faster and rub more often; such friction always becomes an increase in temperature. The vaunted global warming is the result of processes of a much higher rank than those attributable to the car exhaust pipes; it's a sign of the times. Of course we are in there, but we aren't nearly as important as we'd like to think, but isn't it cool? Yeah, that of "Terminal sin" is the modern version of the "Original sin"; the new religion, "Environmentalism", with its own pater, "green" all of them, with long beards and dreamy eyes, with the same fanatical gleam of those who feel they must save the world. Guilt, ONCE AGAIN, remains the tool for controlling the parishioners. Spirals are dominated by their center. This is well known to the good martial artists (what to say about the aikidokas!?). Our System Center is the Sun, not the automotive industry... although they wish they were! It's the sun which commands... and we just obey. The comparative of the vectors between the increase of Sunspots and the melting of the icecaps gives a perfect "match"; the one between the increase of CO2 and the melting of the icecaps, resemble as an egg to a chestnut (or less...). But anyway, this is simply unstoppable; the "good guys" have come with their message of eternal salvation ... and they are going to screw us over and over. And that we must be clear: for when everybody agrees on something, it's the obligation of every free man to distrust IMMEDIATELY. The truth is never unilateral, but spherical. Every front hides a back, as large as the front, and as invisible as visible is the front. But returning to what we were saying, since what is unquestionable is that there is acceleration and heating, the issue here is how to adapt. My friend JosĂŠ MarĂa SĂĄnchez Barrio taught me thermoregulation, an effective, consistent and harmonious answer to such phenomena. I will not extent on this topic since I already did earlier in my other books. It works very well, and eventually, one develops a taste for cold water although it might be hard to believe at first. Thermoregulating the body gives us a good basis to change attitudes; it's like starting to build the house by the foundations and, in the process, "tune up" emotion and mind, when acceleration is our daily bread. Real ecology

E

begins at home and as for the ecosystem heating we have only to look at our inner ecosystem (incidentally, you have to see how poor Al Gore is getting fatter and turning red). Everything is product of the environment, so that we are all exposed to this process of acceleration and overheating. The entire biosphere has to adapt to these conditions, or else... At least the bishops, cardinals and other heralds of the new religion should teach by example. But today things are sold in its wrapping; in other words, like any balloon when inflated, the energy moves toward the outskirts, to the forms, rather than toward the content, so the example has ceased to have any value when it comes to preaching. Yeah, more than a few preach abstinence while running the brothel. Pressure increase is another constant of this energetic climatology. Take for example its effects on the human body. Structures tend to expand with heat and, in doing so, they compress the adjacent tissues and pull the pulleys of the musculoskeletal system. The connective tissue acts as a surge protection, but sooner or later, tensions end up appearing, sometimes in reflex zones, very distant from the originating point. In other words, the acceleration culminates in the "In fiama" (in flames) or inflammation; the structure expands, exerts pressure and, once reached a certain threshold, pain makes its appearance. Pain, the awkward guest, is the result of increased pressure, and this is becoming more and more evident, and not only at a physical level. Pressure is felt in the economy, in the lack of time, in the precariousness of our relations with others, in everything. Pressure impels us inward and isolates us in a struggle for survival, for saving, but loneliness, when is not sought motu proprio, can generate by itself huge internal entropy. We live in societies increasingly autistic, virtually connected with reality (note the "virtually = reality" paradox), engaged in ourselves, while life passes through us, instead of us going through it. Personally, and making it clear that this warming, making it clear that talking about blames doesn't go with me, what worries me about warming are the immediate consequences that it produces now and already in myself. I think an immediate consequence of the poor approach that has been given to the matter is that the attention is placed outside, rather than inside. This vision is somewhat paradoxical though, because if it turns out that "we" are to blame for a problem that occurs "outside us," somehow we live it as a thing that doesn't go "with us". It is not in the first person, in our own flesh, but a group problem that politicians will eventually resolve. So it has to do with us, yes, but only in the sense of guilt. By emphasizing the outside with proclamations like We're still in time! and other similar statements, the problem remains outside; it's virtual, out there, somewhere in the future, but it still doesn't touch us, it is something alien. Now if what we are talking about is stress, not to have time for anything, to live alienated, to suffer continuous pain here and there, to feel the "pressure" of the circumstances, etc., and we

become aware that all these symptoms have a common framework that encourages and promotes a kind of global synergy, the whole thing starts to be something that sounds familiar, something immediate, something that even the less seasoned takes for granted: Yourself. Houses are built from the foundations up and not from the roof down. The first change we need to do is the one that we can really do and the only one that matters: a change in ourselves. Any change that does not include this beginning, this goal, is not worth it, without forgetting that the other changes, well-intentioned as they may be, may end up producing the opposite of what they pursue; it would be neither the first nor the last time. So everything is about adapting, because there's nothing that can hold back the global warming, no matter how much they might increase taxes, or if tomorrow is not used one single liter of gasoline, or burnt one single bag of coal in the whole world! It is the center that commands, not the periphery! When Wall Street sneezes, we all catch pneumonia in Europe, and if you still have doubts, just remember the recent case of the subprime mortgages. All spirals are mastered from the center, and center in our system is the sun. What to do? As always, we still have the possibility of adapting ourselves. My proposal (which I know you will never accept because you all have become a bunch of ladybugs!), would be that it was the instructors who started first to take cold showers after training, and since in the world of Martial Arts only the old system of teaching by example is still valid, the best students could imitate you. In other times I'd just have recommended you to impose it as part of your workouts, but as it turns out that instead of students now you have customers, it's clear that you won't be able to do it, since they would run away terrified to enroll in the first gym that offers Jacuzzi, for the same price that you promised to them only blood, sweat and tears. The old Spanish adage "Who loves you a lot can make you cry" is no longer politically correct. The true martial way is not comfortable, no matter how you decorate it, so it's useless to try. But of course, it will be even much healthier if at the end of each class you take a good cold shower. In this way your internal environment of and that of the closer ones will be cooled, taking away what you don't need, because there is much, stress, pressure, overheating ... pain. I challenge your credibility from these lines: Let's see who dares and tells me later! Standing still is not the answer, adapting requires https://www.facebook.com/alfredo.tucci.5 specific actions, be a warrior in the new times also goes through there.

Great Masters Almost 30 years have gone since this magazine saw the light, and not by chance, for its first cover I chose the image of the great Karateka which is and always has been, Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. But beyond the fact that he already was a legend at that time among karatekas from all over the world, my admiration for him had very particular components that today, after such a long time, I am extremely pleased to share with you hereby. Years after that first cover, when the magazine was already published in several languages, I had the opportunity to interview him personally and record a video in our studios, along with a photo shoot, some of which illustrate this article, as a tribute to our history. But that photo session was not our first meeting, as I reminded the Master during the dinner that followed the recording. Aware that he wouldn't remember the first time we had met, I told him: - "Sensei, I know you don't remember, but you and I met in the past and since then I have "giri "with you." Kanazawa Sensei was surprised by my statement and, interested in the subject, changed radically his position: - "Oh, really? How is that?" - He asked me... - "I was a young blue belt karateka, and with the boldness of my youth, I turned up at your seminar of Madrid, an exclusive course for black belts. I stood at the door and waited for you to appear in shizentai. You came surrounded by a swarm of high grades and as you passed next to me you asked pointing at me:

“Life’s greatest happiness comes from making yourself useful to people. Life’s greatest treasure is health. The best way to become stronger is to know your own weaknesses.”

Great Masters - What happens with him? The organizer explained to you that although I had paid the course, he couldn't let me enter because I wasn't a Black Belt. You looked at me for a moment, and then you smiled and said "Let him in..." So, Sensei, I have "giri" with you ever since; thank you very much!" In that seminar I was like a fly in milk, 200 black belts ... and a young... blue belt, eternally pleased by the gesture, deference, sensitivity and attention of the great Master, that gentleman that today I bring back to our front page. I do it doubly pleased, because this article that you are now reading is the same that will illustrate the first cover of our very next edition in Japanese language, in which we are busily working and will be released in the coming months. Who better to close this virtuous circle in this relationship, in this story? Kanazawa speaks of many interesting things in this interview, curiously some of them are exactly the same as those I wrote a couple of months ago and which were edited in the form of editorial last month; reflections on aging, about the cycles of life. Everything is making clear to me that in the distance there is still a strange synchronicity with my respected and beloved teacher and I love that. Kanazawa was an idol, a model for many in my generation. He was the Toshiro Mifune of Karate! A model of elegance, personality, gentlemanly and deep commitment. He knew the genesis of Funakoshi's Karate and actively participated in the birth of what is now known as modern karate. However, he always maintained an open and inquisitive mind in his work and this mentality led him to ways very unusual at the time, such as practicing Tai Chi. He was concerned with formal and deep aspects of

Great Masters Karate which he took as a luxury banner all over the world for several decades. Today, at 85 years of age, he is a venerable Master, and his face, when he smiles, shows again the child within. What more could you ask for? And that's it! As the saying goes: "From the old ... the advice!" So in cahoots with the great Karateka Jesús Fernández, Kyoshi, standard bearer and paladin of Master Kanazawa in Spain and Europe, we planned this interview that more than a tribute is a hymn to friendship, immense appreciation and respect for a whole life, full, graceful, big and gentle, fulfilling his great destiny with Karate and his purposes in this life. Jesús suggested very insightfully, nothing better than to attach it to the presentation to the general public of his son, as the saga continues ... So, thank you Jesús and especially thank you Sensei for so many years as impeccable references. You are and will always be ... Our NUMBER 1! Alfredo Tucci

Karate INTERVIEW SOKE. H. KANAZAWA Soke H. Kanazawa.: First of all, thank you very much for this interview. I was featured on the front page of Cinturón Negro 30 years ago and it is a great honor to once again be interviewed by the magazine and featured on the cover. Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 1. My first question is about you. How do you feel? I guess that stop travelling so much around the world can be strange for you. 2. Thinking about disease or feeling down. How can we use karate to face the problems head on? 3. With all your experience, can you explain how “Karate Do” changes with age. How “Shin-Gi–Tai” modifies during the cycle of life (getting older)? Soke H. Kanazawa.: I think that I can answer your first three questions with a single response, so I will answer them together. The same also holds true for your fourth, fifth and sixth questions, so I will also answer them together. When I was young, I believed that my life would probably come to an end when I was between 120 and 125 years old. But over the past 60 years, I have traveled many times across continents and because of the effects of time differences, along with teaching trips to various countries and regions around the world, I have shortened my original estimate by 30 years and now believe that my life will end at the age of 90. However, when I was 79, I fell down into a ravine while skiing in Italy and injured my hip, and after that had a heart problem (requiring surgery to replace three valves) and came down with Parkinson’s disease. As you can plainly see, I have much to reflect on about how poorly I have managed my own health, but as the Chairman of the NPO SKIF, and as Soke (Originator) and Saiko-shihan (Supreme Instructor) of Shotokan Karate-do International, I participate in important events.

“Karate-do is “strength” ending in speed, and the Tai Chi that I became proficient in is “gentleness” through slow movements. But this gentleness is a gentleness that can be transformed into strength at any time.”

Great Masters I have three mottos that express my philosophy on life. Life’s greatest happiness comes from making yourself useful to people. Life’s greatest treasure is health. The best way to become stronger is to know your own weaknesses. Separating the time that I have lived in accordance with this life philosophy into 30-year periods, I have lived my life in the following way based on the natural formula of “Shin (Mind) — Gi (Technique) — Tai (Body)” and “Ten no toki (Luck of timing) — Chi no ri (Geographical advantage) — Hito no wa (Harmony among people).”

First 30 years of life: “Harmony among people = Body = Fundamental self-training of life” Middle 30 years of life: “Geographical advantage = Technique = Proper etiquette” Later 30 years of life: “Luck of timing = Mind = Harmony with nature” Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 1. Can you explain what is Kihon for you at this moment in your life? 2. The same question like before, but with Kata 3. And the same with Kumite. What Is Kumite for you at this moment?

Great Masters Soke H. Kanazawa.: My response to your first three questions also applies to your questions about Kihon, Kata and Kumite. Kihon: “Harmony among people = Body = Fundamental self-training of life” Kata: “Geographical advantage = Technique = Proper etiquette” Kumite: “Luck of timing = Mind = Harmony with nature” Please understand, however, that over the course of each 30-year period, there are individual cases in which some of these may interchange with others within the overall flow. Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 4. Please talk about breathing in karate and in life. 5. How can we connect between breathing and Ki? Soke H. Kanazawa.: Breathing is harmony between the body and the mind, and through training, I have learned 32 different breathing patterns, as shown on the separate page.

Through the proper coordination of breathing and Ki, various body functions receive stimulation as needed, which triggers some kind of reaction and change. Take, for example, the technique “Death within a specified number of years.” (Using board-breaking [tameshi-wari] as an example, this refers to the ability to break a specific board that is sandwiched between other boards without breaking any of the boards that are in front of or behind the targeted board.) I have learned how to execute this technique. 1. Long Inhalation (長吸) a. Long inhalation–long exhalation b. Long inhalation–short exhalation c. Long inhalation–short split exhalation d. Long inhalation–long split exhalation 2. Long exhalation(長吐) a. Long exhalation–long inhalation b. Long exhalation–short inhalation c. Long exhalation–short split inhalation d. Long inhalation–long split inhalation 3. Short inhalation(短吸) a. Short inhalation–long exhalation

“Through the repeated practice of Kihon, Kata and Kumite in the darkness, I was able to understand the movements of not only my body, but also my mind. This enabled me to achieve Kime in various situations and made it possible for me to see my techniques. I believe that this was the origin of the practical movements that I acquired later.”

Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 6. You have domain expertise in double kime punch. How you learned and how you realize it? Soke H. Kanazawa.: This goes back to my school days at Takushoku University. I lived in the dormitory next to the university’s karate-do club and, as part of my self-training, I would practice late into the night every night. The power supply in Japan at the time required

that all lights be turned off at 11:00 p.m. And because turning on a light after that time was not permitted, I found myself training in the pitch dark. Through the repeated practice of Kihon, Kata and Kumite in the darkness, I was able to understand the movements of not only my body, but also my mind. This enabled me to achieve Kime in various situations and made it possible for me to see my techniques. I believe that this was the origin of the practical movements that I acquired later.

Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 7. You have been practicing Tai Chi and Kobudo from many years ago and always you have explained that it has been for improving your karate. Kobudo has similar roots than karate and we can imagine the complement between both of them, but Chinese martial arts and Japanese are different, so, can you explained with more details, in which consist the link between Tai Chi and Karate? Soke H. Kanazawa.: Karate-do is “strength” ending in speed, and the Tai Chi that I became proficient in is “gentleness” through slow movements. But this gentleness is a gentleness that can be transformed into strength at any time. In addition to Yakusoku Kumite (promise sparring), which comprises the fundamental one-to-one movements of punches and blocks that comprehensively incorporate these elements, I also include the Yakusoku Kumite Number System along with training methods that assume multiple attackers, such as Shiho Kumite (literally four-direction Kumite) and Happo Kumite (literally eight-direction Kumite). As for Chinese martial arts, although I acquired some degree of skill in Bo (staff), Nunchaku and Sai (pointed metal baton), because I haven’t given sufficient thought to the matter, I don’t feel that I am in the position to make any comparative arguments. However, while there have been investigations into the origins of karate-do from Greece, Myanmar, India, China and Okinawa, within the Chinese martial arts, I do not feel as though I am knowledgeable enough to draw any conclusions about which of these arts, including the Tai Chi that I learned, might have contributed to the origin of karate-do.

Kyoshi Jesús Fer nández for Budo International.: 8. For a near future, If you can make a wish, How would you like to see Karate in the world and the role of SKIF in it? Soke H. Kanazawa.: As an instructor of karate-do, from the beginning my wish was to spread karate-do throughout the world with the aim of helping young people achieve perfection of character. Throughout my life, this wish has never changed. As for sports karate, I would not like the primary objective to be competing to decide a winner and a loser. Instead, I would like it to be viewed as a sports competition in which the movements of karate-do are put to practical use. It is my wish that, in this way, we can make use of karate-do as a means of cultivating people who will contribute to the realization of world peace. And I hope that all of the instructors who succeed me will continue working to realize this wish. Kyoshi Jesús Fer nández for Budo International.: 9. I suppose, you are tired everyone always ask you about karate aspects, of course all of us are interested in, but I am interesting about your point of view about harmony and happiness in daily life. Sometimes we are focused in the way to be

great experts in punching and kicking but sometimes we forget about the most important point, our example to our children and pupils outside Dojo. Please comment. Soke H. Kanazawa.: Because this question overlaps with question no. 14, I will answer it along with that question. Kyoshi Jesús Fer nández for Budo International.: 10. For “Cinturón Negro” magazine, you have been always a special martial artist. Now after close to 30 years, you are again in the front page of the first Japanese version of it. Do you want to tell something to readers? Soke H. Kanazawa.: When I was featured on the front page of Cinturón Negro magazine 30 years ago, I was 61 years old and I had just entered the final mature period of my karate-do life, which I discussed earlier. Since that time, I do not know if I have been able to fulfill the many years of support and expectations of your readers, through the news in your magazine, but I will continue striving to promote karate-do based on the formulae of my life philosophy: “Ten (Heaven)—Chi (Earth)—Jin (People)” and “Shin—Gi—Tai.” For this reason, I would be grateful if you extended to my successors—Kancho,

Great Masters Shuseki-shihan (Chief instructor) and all of the So-honbu (SKIF Headquarters) instructors—the same support and kindness that you have shown to me. Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 11. The last one. You are an example for many of us. If you are asked to send a message to the world in this turbulent times, what would you like to say? Soke H. Kanazawa.: What I would like to say is that, to young people who look to karate-do as a means of improving physical strength and understanding the Rei (bowing) and Setsu (principles) of Budo, Shotokan Karate-do International is able to provide the kind of karate-do that offers dreams to young men and women, boys and girls. Where there are dreams, there is hope. Where there is hope, goals come into view. Where there are goals, plans are made.

“What I would like to say is that, to young people who look to karate-do as a means of improving physical strength and understanding the Rei (bowing) and Setsu (principles) of Budo”

Karate Plans that are executed create results. Results create emotion, which offers new dreams. Through the virtuous cycle of “Hope — Goals — Plans — Execution — Results — Emotion — New dreams,” we seek to further improve ourselves, which guides us to the path toward perfection of character. In order for all Shotokan Karate-do International members to experience this cycle, every three months we carry out a promotion system starting from 9th kyu so that members can evaluate their own progress and realize their results. These are the goals that we, the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation, pursue. We humbly request your continued support. Finally, I hope, you can rest and spend more time harmonizing with Mother Nature like you talked to me last time you were in Spain. You deserve this. Thank you very much, Jesús. With all my respect and best wishes OSS

“I believe that budo (martial arts) is acquiring the power to control your own mind and body by developing yourself through training. I feel that doing so also enables you to respect your opponent. I encourage everyone to make use of karate as a means of building character to benefit society.

Karate INTERVIEW KANCHO Nobuaki KANAZAWA Kyoshi Jesús Fer nández for Budo International.: 1. My first question is about you. Being the son of a legend, is not easy. All eyes on you. How do you manage the situation? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: It is a heavy responsibility. But being the focus of attention isn’t something that only began recently. I encountered that when I started training seriously in karate as a university student. But I decided that I would prepare myself to accept everything that came my way. Actually, I think it was this situation that has pushed me to do my best. Kyoshi Jesús Fer nández for Budo International.: 2. Before asking about karate, what can you tell us about Soke like a father? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: Above all, he is very kind. Although he frequently traveled overseas to teach, he did many things for us without ever letting us see that he may be tired. After my mother passed away, he would wake up early and make me and my brothers our lunches to take to school. He is a man of few words, but through his actions he taught us how to live our lives. Kyoshi Jesús Fer nández for Budo International.: 3. And what about Soke like your teacher?, more pressure than other people or the same? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: During junior high school and high school, I was focused only on basketball. I didn’t train at all in karate. But at that time, my father didn’t say anything to me about not training in karate. When I did start karate and was actively competing, although I never received any direct instruction from him, he did say that if I was going to do it (train in karate), that I should try to be the best.

Karate Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 4. Same questions ask to your father. Can you explain what is Kihon for you? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: Simply put, I believe that kihon is harmony with yourself. It means focusing on yourself while acquiring techniques, learning how to use your body correctly and, through repeated practice, building a strong mind and body. And I believe that this benefits kata and kumite.

Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 5. The same question like before, but with Kata Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: Using techniques learned through kihon, it is necessary to perform kata with grace and beauty, as well as with power and accuracy, while maintaining an awareness of offensive and defensive exchanges against an opponent. Kata involves more than just form; it is important to be conscious of actual combat that relates to kumite.

“I believe that kihon is harmony with yourself. It means focusing on yourself while acquiring techniques, learning how to use your body correctly and, through repeated practice, building a strong mind and body.

Karate Kyoshi Jesús Fer nández for Budo International.: 6. And the same with Kumite. What Is Kumite for you at this moment? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: In kumite, the focus should not just be on knockingdown (defeating) your opponent. It is only when you try to understand your opponent and achieve harmony with him that you can realize techniques that will enable you to defeat him (a way of finding the truth).Through continued training, this also offers benefits in developing positive human relationships. Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 7. Is there any special training you do for yourself? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: With regard to karate, I train five times a week, everything from kihon to application. I also do rudimentary training with the aim of improving my muscular and physical strength. When I travel, if I have time, I go running and work out at a gym. I also always carry around an inner tube with me (for resistance training). Kyoshi Jesús Fer nández for Budo International.: 8. Are you interested in other martial arts, like your father did with Kobudo, Tai Chi and so on? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: Yes, I am interested in other martial arts. I’m currently practicing T’ai chi ch’uan and Bo (staff), but I would like to expand into other forms of budo (martial arts) in the future.

“Using techniques learned through kihon, it is necessary to perform kata with grace and beauty, as well as with power and accuracy, while maintaining an awareness of offensive and defensive exchanges against an opponent.

Karate Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 9. What are your favorite technique and why? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: My favorite technique is the one-two combination of a kizami-zuki (jab) followed by a gyaku-zuki (reverse punch). When I first started seriously training in karate in university, I saw the senior members (of the karate team) using this technique. I thought it looked cool and I wanted to use the same technique to win matches. Also, among Japanese people, since I’m fairly tall, I thought that this technique would let me take advantage of my height.

Kyoshi Jesús Fernández for Budo International.: 10. Now you have a great responsibility being Kancho in one of the most important federations of Karate worldwide. What has changed in your daily life?. What means Kancho for you? Kancho Nobuaki Kanzawa.: I have many opportunities now to meet people who are active not only in karate, but in many different fields. I find this very stimulating and it allows me to learn many new things. I take the responsibility of Kancho very seriously. In whatever I do, of course I always think first about what is

Karate

Haragei Genshin! - What is the secret for serenity? - Asks the student to a Haragei master. - Genshin! - Answers the master without hesitation.

For many, this expression is more like a found way to lead the student to a state of reflection and search for something. However, for most scholars, Genshin, the translation of which is "origin of feelings", represents self-observation in the search of answers through the manifestation of one's feelings. Observing them; feeling them; their inception; their motives; their intensity...

“For most scholars, Genshin, the translation of which is ‘origin of feelings’ represents selfobservation.”

Freud's observations of his patients, revealed an endless series of psychic conflicts and awakenings. Any instinct was opposed by another one; social prohibitions blocked biological instincts and the ways of dealing with situations frequently collided one another. He tried to make order out of this apparent chaos, proposing three structural building blocks of the psyche: the id, the ego and the super ego. However, Eastern masters, for centuries exercised the simple fact of self-observation; feeling what really exists. In regard to the external practice of Haragei, it entails ethical and moral factors of containment (not actions) - that seek to mitigate the more subtle forms of trends - through proscriptions (our rages, fears, desires, attachments and envies); is the key point to creating a state of "no possessiveness", the structural lines of which look to save the energy of the activities that require defense and maintenance of our means. In other words, the concepts studied in the practice of Genshin seek, without internal borders, a real and constructive observation (concrete actions) intended to strengthen and purify the physical body (with its ego) and give a right direction to the observer, saving the worn energies in other directions - considering that the human universe is marked by the desire for unlimited conquest and domain: a constant attempt to avoid the pain of loss!

“People out of control believe that they are right!

Zen Tradition “As human beings, we intend to have a sense of ownership and absolute control. However, the pain of birth, old age, sickness and death is inevitable. Not being able to control it leaves us outraged and frustrated. Observing the source of this anger, of this frustration, of all the feelings, at all times and moments ... All this is Genshin!

As human beings, we intend to have a sense of ownership and absolute control. However, the pain of birth, old age, sickness and death is inevitable. Not being able to control it leaves us outraged and frustrated. Observing the source of this anger, of this frustration, of all the feelings, at all times and moments ... All this is Genshin! Even more than that, I also believe that through our sensations, we experience strong currents that wrap and encompass the least prepared. We can see an example of this in the constant waves of violence which almost always occur in the same frequency: death for kidnapping or jealousy, children who kill their parents, etc. They never come alone ... Has the reader thought of it? There is always more than a case that takes place in the same way, with the same pattern found in so many others. Scholars like Jung could classify this as the collective unconscious; thought waves, etc. In one way or another, it seems that we are always moved by directional waves, which lead us to this or that point. For Haragei masters and for many other scholars who study the lines that link humans to vibrational currents, the organism - as a physical body and, in some cases, called condensed long wave energy and

“My teachers taught that we are prisoners in the eternal circularity of our moments, of our instants. Without self-observation, the being matures through life itself, which is relentless in his teachings.

low frequency -, follows the spirit, which, influenced by such currents, advances in the direction of greater intensity; that is, it approaches the same time dying and being reborn, beginning and ending, from the opposite end of short and high frequency waves, and transforms its vibration in that of the latter type; or in other words, it involuntarily transcends the material sensations: it spiritualizes. The moment itself of mental exhaustion leads us to a more scientific explanation: "Exhaustion originates in two instances: first, when the situation to which the individual will have to adapt (external or internal stimulus), is undesirable or objectionable and persists for long. In that case, there is adaptive flaw exhaustion due to the (emotional) efforts to overcome the persistent undesirable situation, whether it is considered undesirable from the point of view subjective or objective. That means that the stimulus for stress would be threatening both for the person that reacts to him, and for third parties, if these would be subjected to the same stimulus. Second, when the person does not have a sufficiently adequate emotional stability to adapt to stimuli not as traumatic, objectively speaking." (Ballone GJ -. Stress - Physiology in PsiqWeb, Internet, available in www.psiqweb.med.br. 2005). Haragei teachers also explain that the "vibration current" that sets the events, joins, in extreme cases of actual events, the multiplicity of sensory experiences to converge in the synthesis of reason; that explains why people out of control believe that they are right! Then the physical body administers the forces for the expansion of the ideas, and establishes, in a return command, the actions to be performed. In other words, the being acts almost without awareness of its actions. Yet, at the same time, a parallel

stream down, from the spirit to the body, confers in the latter, with types of increasingly sophisticated energy; that is, waves increasingly shorter and of a frequency increasingly higher, so that, slowly, the potential of the whole personality rises from one to another of its ends, even in its physical part. That is the point where things happen! Its true nature manifests by itself. That is why the Haragei theory, in several of its explanations, affirms that different people have different ways to achieve the realization, but all have the ability to understand the true function and the true meaning of their own nature. It is there that we learn through the intentional void: when we seek and we don't reach. We create the void that imprisons us; it leads us to think about self. Indeed, at a deeper level, the great enlightenment of which masters talk about so much, contains illusion and is not related to something big or small. The great enlightenment is its own "Great Enlightenment". There is no difference between them. The Great Enlightenment is not only the function of ourselves and the others. It fills everything; it is the center of existence, both in the form of enlightenment and in the form of illusion. Only illusion can seek the Great Enlightenment and we can never find the Great Enlightenment outside of illusion. This is rather curious, isn't it? If we see it through the martial panorama, the best way to fend off an attack is not to be there. This means that the truths we translate toward our outside will undoubtedly revert into benefits or negative consequences. Being there or not is hardly a matter of inner positioning. Everything starts in our inner universe; thoughts, ideas, attitudes, positioning, ethics... All this is part of an arsenal of tools that can be used daily. Mainly in the observation perspective of the Haragei, being strong does not mean to throw fire through your hands, but to have an inner strength capable of creating a positive environment, away from conflict and traps. It is common in people who start practicing a Martial Art, to have the instinct to crave acquiring the consciousness of a higher being belonging to higher biological levels, thus becoming invincible in their imagination.

“From the martial point of view, the best way to fend off an attack is not being there.

Faced with the harsh reality of the facts, it immediately becomes perceptible the immense crater existing between the outer truth of life, pointy, rigid, crazy ... and the reality projected by our dreams. In this aspect, Haragei is irreducible in its positioning that, to overcome and dominate, inner strength is essential, and in order to bring benefits, undoubtedly, this force must be properly guided. All great men I have met, people who have made me rethink my concepts, have a remarkable inner strength. They are coordinated in their actions, aware in their ideas, educated, ethical ... It’s that force what becomes eternal, inexhaustible, since it is able to heal a situation out of control. Avoid excesses and walk in peace. "I’ve learned that a man has the right to look at another man from top to bottom only to help him rise up." (Gabriel Garcia Marquez)

Self-defense

Anti-ground

You're knocking your opponent. You train hard to be able to do it and you're pretty good at that, you've done it many times. Your hands move by intuition. After all those hours on the gym tatami, they seem to act on their own, as well as your legs. You already have him under control, no doubt about that. But when, like a Boa constrictor, you stick around him, you feel a deep pain in your body. That guy has just bitten you! Hey ref! The truth is that he has stabbed me with a knife he had hidden! This is not a fair fight, right? No, it is not. First rule of the Fight Club: "There are no rules"

Self-defense

Anti-ground

Krav Maga his is a street fight and there are no mats between your body and the hard ground, and certainly, it’s a fight without a referee. Right now, all you can hope for is that someone calls a doctor and that the assailant and his friends get bored with you and decide to leave you with only the stab wound. So while you remain lying there, getting cold, you ask yourself "what did I do wrong?" Well, you were confused and your training has taken over. You train to gain competitive sporting events and this was a fight for survival. Different rules, or, more

T

accurately, no rules at all. It's time to ask yourself some serious questions and seek answers... Today, many people around the world practice the fine art of the hand to hand fighting. Many train hard and some even take part in sports competitions. But they compete within a frame; they follow rules that let technique, refinement and skill shine. The victory is very important, but if necessary, you can go and live with your defeat, losers are no longer executed. The truth is that it's not done for thousands of years. Then you go home happy or sad, but you'll manage to get home. Even in the fighting

“You do not want to fight this or these individuals, so quickly, abandon your ego and flee. Do not worry about testosterone, save it for the bedroom. Go home and think of how lucky that individual (or individuals) has been! Ah, if they only knew! Choose not to fight, choose to live.

Self-defense "without rules" there are prohibitions. You can't take a kitchen knife into the cage. So we all end up rolling down the floor, causing each other a little damage, competing, perhaps winning, perhaps losing, but accidents apart, we will not be returning home in a body bag. If, on the other hand, you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a struggle for your own survival, the outcome is completely uncertain and you must stick to only one rule: you have to survive. The person against whom you are fighting wants to hurt you badly or even kill you; certainly you will not take a shower together afterwards. In all likelihood, at least one of you two will come out seriously hurt, because that is the "crux" of the matter, that is the goal: to incapacitate the opponent. No points, or trophies or fans who cheer for us, just the ability to survive and be able to wake next morning and see a new day. Of course, not all street fights finish causing victims, but this or the next could end up that way. When the risk is so high, the result can't be predicted. Not everyone is a "winner". What counts here is not the fact of taking part, but to survive the situation. So, why have you lost? On the street, the ground is a very dangerous place to be. To effectively survive in the street, if possible you should try to escape at all times, entering into fight with your aggressor only if absolutely necessary. If the conflict is unavoidable and a response on your part becomes essential, then it must be incredibly fast, efficient and devastating. You are not there to impress. You should not be there at all! You should be fleeing the place. For obvious reasons, this is difficult to implement from the ground. Okay, you know what you're doing there, but although it might seem to you that you are in a familiar territory, it's quite different. Perhaps your aggressor doesn't have a knife; perhaps he has only bitten you or made you a deep wound in the eye. You may be so good that your assailant fails to make any of these things and now, quietly, he is getting purple. But do you think that your assailant's friends will throw in the towel for him? Do you believe that they going to lift him and then ask you where you train? No! They are going to kick your head like a soccer ball; to bust a bar stool across your teeth; or they will wield a broken bottle, a knife, a bat or anything they may have on hand, in order to balance the fight for his friend. This is not fiction, this is reality and there are thousands of versions everywhere of this story in which the lives of innocent people have been ruined or ended. Yes, it is an unpleasant idea, a distasteful experience we should never go through; yes, but it has happened and it will always go on happening, and the rules remain the same: there are no rules.

“Even in the fighting "without rules" there are prohibitions. You can't take a kitchen knife into the cage. So we all end up rolling down the floor, causing each other a little damage, competing, perhaps winning, perhaps losing, but accidents apart, we will not be returning home in a body bag.

Self-defense

Between the tatami and a difficult place What can a hand to hand fighter do? Well, sure he will be able to keep fighting. Having this skill is enormously beneficial, even in the street. But learn to think differently and respects the terrain you are at: to get from A to B, a car is a great tool. And Michael Schumacher sure knows how to use such tool, right? Do you think that the route he makes from the racetrack to his

house is like what he does in the circuit? He has to drive differently and respect the terrain he is at. If trusting in his incredible dexterity he allowed himself to take a right turn at more than 160 km / hour, he could kill a pedestrian. His ability is undoubtedly useful, but he has to differentiate the different lands and act accordingly. You also have to be an "off-road" vehicle! Because these things can happen anytime, anywhere. You might be simply occupied with

Self-defense your own business, perhaps daydreaming and relaxed, or you may be distracted, sick, even you could be drunk! Entering or leaving your car, or in your bed (if you're in somebody else's bed, possibly you have it well deserved). There may be total darkness, low light, or the surface beneath your feet is incredibly slippery. Who knows, you might be in an elevator or any other confined space. You're not mentally or physically prepared for this meeting, so, the way you've trained so far may be (or not) everything you have at your disposal. The reality-based training is expanding globally, and guess who lead often the queue? Martial Artists! And some of them, highly skilled, are those whose long and difficult journey has left them with a feeling of unease in regard with their own safety. What they undoubtedly find, once they are training the street, is that all their skill and courage are incredibly useful and even a transferable part to the new target of survival. They learn the difference between the mat and the hard place: there are no gloves in there, no punches taken out of circulation, or being saved by the bell; only a mad struggle to survive, no agreement on the weight or the techniques to be executed. And remember that there is no time limit, it lasts what it lasts, and certainly there is no possibility to interrupt the bout by tapping on the floor, but the very likely circumstance of getting seriously injured or even killed. Unlike what happens in a competition, your opponent on the street will probably be a stranger, possibly fueled by much more than protein drinks drugs and alcohol can make people feel very strong, indifferent to pain and very unpredictable. This is rather complicated; it's about unsightly and always dirty things.

Tatami + Reality = Commando Krav Maga Moni Aizik is founder of Commando Krav Maga and former member of the Elite Commando Team of the Israeli Special Forces Units. With over 30 years’ experience in combat, Moni began his training in Martial Arts at the age of 8 years, having won in his youth 7 national titles of Jujitsu and Judo. When at the age of 18 years became a member of the army, Moni was responsible for counterterrorism and military intelligence behind enemy lines and fought in the Yom Kippur War. After his military service, Moni continued to teach hand to hand combat to the Commands of the Israeli Special Forces, the Public Security Forces and civilian sectors of the population. Moni travels regularly to Japan to study the technique magic of the world Judo and Sambo champions, Isao Okano and Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki. Meanwhile, his club in Israel, the Maccabi Tel Aviv, is credited as National Training Center, with hundreds of students practicing Commando Krav Maga, Jujitsu and Judo! Among Moni's best Israeli students is Yael Arad, the first Olympic and world medalist in the nation. Moving to North America in the eighties, Moni was the first to introduce the Krav Maga to Canadians, where he began teaching at the

J.C.C. in Toronto. Two years later he continued exhibiting his skills in elite instruction, when he founded one of the most successful schools in Canada, which was the first to teach Israeli combat systems and Jujitsu in Canada. Moni's center became the home of another generation of Commando Krav Maga students, based on reality and for Jujitsu fighters! Moni students literally dominated every competition, whether local or national. Among others: world famous

champions and fighters of combats "without rules", including the "Ultimate Fighting" Champion Carlos Newton, the Japanese star Soto, Joel Gerson and many more. Many years spent teaching at the highest military levels, in civilian and sports communities have shaped the unparalleled knowledge basis from which Commando Krav Maga evolved. Studying biomechanics, reaction time and the strength/speed relationship in depth, thousands of

Self-defense techniques were modified and distilled into a practical system that is easy to learn and remember under stress. The CKM combines the most useful elements taught to the toughest military in the world, the Israeli Special Forces, with the conditions of the octagon "without rules" (like the UFC), with Martial Arts of Olympic level and mental training. The goal of CKM is teaching anybody to survive and emerge victorious in the street and in life. These movements, associated with a set of fundamental principles, rigorous testing and a new assessment, make of the CKM an increasingly popular choice for the civilian sector, as well as the elite armies and safety agencies around the world. These principles are an essential aspect of survival, which is a question both of psychology and of physiology. The right mental approach to self-defense can't be overstated. On the street you'll you feel and react differently and you must train accordingly. In CKM, the student will exercise these principles as much as movements and learn what to take to the street and what to leave on the tatami gym. First of all, throwing in the towel!

Self-defense Danger lies at ground level If you have to fall to the ground, then so let it be. Maybe it was you the one who tried to overthrow the aggressor, anyway, do not spend one second more than necessary in this vulnerable position. Is your aggressor carrying a knife? He is alone? Do you want him to bite or hurt you? So if you have to go down, sacrifice yourself, then get up and walk away. Using vulnerable and pressure points, the CKM student will seek to ward off at all times, and will study the right way to get back on his feet, keep his balance, the guard and accelerate his withdrawal. They call it the 5 seconds Rule and if you're not standing up by then, you'll be in trouble. The devil may be whispering you to remain fallen and block the aggressor with a lever... Do not listen to him! Remember: Get up, up and step aside. In CKM, standing is considered the best option, but it is not always possible, so we search knowledge of ground fighting equivalent to hand to hand combat. The system also includes large movements, exaggerated under stress, so for example, stomping with strength on the aggressor's head before escaping, reduces the chances of being persecuted. Get rid of him, stand up, kick him and get out of the way. Forget about refinement; forget the complicated series that will leave you alone when you need them most. Think: What is the least I can do to incapacitate this person? This is not chess, take the board and smash it to pieces against him and then run!

The tools of the trade But of what trade? A punch could break your hand, a spinning kick does not promise to be a great help, unsheathing your aluminum sword would be pure folly, unless the disaster is choreographed by John Woo ... Survival is a different trade and knowing what not to do is of great importance. Experienced martial artists looking to expand their knowledge for use outside the gym need to learn to temper their instinct that through hard work may be more suited to the art than to the martial. In Commando Krav Maga, the student will be trained for all kind of eventualities and will learn to render

possible a certain range of responses under maximum stress, as in a struggle for survival. Economy is the key, eliminating all useless movements and allowing rapid and effective reaction.

The art of not going to war It would look rather strange that after reverence, you'd leave the mat and rush out of the gym running barefooted down the street, right? It’s the same if you'd tell your opponent that you don't want to fight, for the final confrontation has managed to take a very different feeling to the street. You do not want to fight this or these individuals, so quickly, abandon your ego and flee. Do not worry about testosterone, save it for the bedroom. Go home and think of how lucky that individual (or individuals) has been! Ah, if they only knew! Choose not to fight, choose to live. The distance between your and the attacker is an essential part of the CKM. Your goal is to expand that distance and keep it when possible. Unless he carries a gun, he can't hurt you from the distance, right? (Disarming an opponent is, without doubt, the last option and it should be carried out as close to the attacker as possible, but this is an exception). Remember that most street fights begin in a quite different way than sports competition combats. There isn't either any previous warming up. We have to expect anticipated blows and most attacks will be preceded by verbal communication, deception and then a sudden surprise punch. Remember the goal of your aggressor; look at it from his point of view. Why you wouldn't do that? You want to shake hands first? You want a quick stretching? Well, maybe you cannot run away and maybe you cannot to keep the distance. If that happens, adopt the plan B. Now a quick decision is needed. We do not want to roll down the ground, grapple and get involved in a bit of blows and fisticuffs with this character. We want to fire him as soon as possible and definitively. So (let's get back to the bedroom): IN, BLOW AND OUT! And not inward, you hit, he hits, you hit again, your friends hit you, you hit, hit, hit to give a lesson, etc., etc. It is clear?

“We do not want to roll down the ground, grapple and get involved in a bit of blows and fisticuffs with this character. We want to fire him as soon as possible and definitively.

Self-defense You don't want to hold a conversation, you don't want to negotiate, you want to be in any other place... Remove the obstacle and proceed. And remember you're not the movie character "Judge Dread"; you're not there to administer the punishment, leave that the law. Is totally unfortunate that you are there, now do what you have to do, in the possible shortest time, and run! Economy is critical.

Mind under Stress You have to train your mind so that it be realistic when in stress. You have to recognize the fundamental differences that will take place biologically when you're fighting for your life. Tests under stress are paramount in Commando Krav Maga, they are not an added condition. In each class you will see students face multiple assailants, inside, outside, in cold, hot, in the dark and confused even more by loud music or obstacles. They will be exhausted because of cardiovascular exercise, then disorientated because of the turns, then suffocated or beaten, or continuously kicked until almost not being able to stand on their feet. This closely simulates reality. It's no use a pleasant and comfortable training in the gym, with comfortable and soft mats, right? You have to adapt to all eventualities and expect the unexpected. If after the first class, you don't stand up fast enough, then expect a sudden blow. Soon you will come to understand the reasoning behind the methods. Better to be hit with a training pad than with a bar stool ... Isn't it true?

An earthly vision An experienced fighter and teacher, recently qualified CKM Instructor Level 2, Anthony "Little Tony" Pacenski Jr., joins the growing categories of martial artists who seek to complement their current knowledge, with reality-based training. Tony has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu - Jitsu, having studied under the direction of Rodrigo Medeiros, as well as Relson, Royce, Rorian, and HĂŠlio Gracie and has had many successes in his field. In other words, he can really fight! Why did he then decide to broaden his search and why did he choose the Commando Krav Maga? Tony explained that despite the amazing evolution in most BJJ components (training with kimono, the proposal of fighting without kimono, MMA, etc.), in the last ten years, in 7 out of 10 schools, don't contemplate the aspect of the system that relates to self-defense. Despite the overall emphasis that hand to hand fighting is given in this discipline, Tony feels that there is no real self-defense exercises or movement tests. These tests are one of the many aspects, along with defense with weapons, which have brought him to the CKM. The above-mentioned difference of the psychology of

Krav Maga confrontation, along with knowledge of ethics and law, have been decisive factors. Tony ran a very successful school and he was excited about adapting a system based on reality, to offer to his many students. Clearly he has found what he was looking for and now he has come to have a foot in both camps. With the experience of Moni in the fight, as a competitor and coach, it's easy to see why his system draws the attention of people around the world of fighting, although he always encourages them to question their way of thinking. He himself has come to these principles through immense hard work, questioning himself and throughout a life entirely devoted to the study. Freethinker fighters like Tony obviously feel in good hands when they leave the comfort in their quest for personal growth.

Time to face reality Commando Krav Maga has become popular among many other Martial Arts instructors from several schools around the world, who want to increase their own skills and provide their students with a combat system based on reality that be equally accessible and trustable. "In simplicity lies genius" is Moni's slogan, but behind this sign of humility hides the work that has to be done and the way of thinking that must be reached to distill something to its deepest essence. Today, properly refined, this is a system convenient and accessible to teachers and students on an equal basis, to military and civilian sectors, experienced and novice. This is because it simply works. It is based on fundamental principles and practices that if you adhere to them and with a little luck, you'll stay safe on the street. So it might have come the time to bring what you know to another level. Ask yourself some questions that can lead you to feel vulnerable. It's time for a little honesty. Do it now and succeed on the gym mat and on the street asphalt, or you may end up slapping yourself and that is really a bad move, inside or outside the gym. "But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it s stupid" Albert Einstein

Budo International: Are we talking about emotions? Justo Diéguez: There is no difference between a brave man and a coward, the difference are their actions, their capability to face life; fear cripples the coward to the point that his mind drifts away from his body, unable to react to a situation, while the brave goes ahead despite fear; real valiant persons are not those who boast of their courage by proclaiming to the four winds what they are capable of doing; we all know someone in our environment that is always boasting of bravery; sadly, this type of persons are often the most coward, those who think that it will never happen to them what unfortunately happens to so many people, that is, that they can be really attacked, and whenever they see the storm approaching they just disappear. B.I.: Fear is in each of us? J.D.: Fear exists in all human beings; can you imagine that we all knew what was going to happen? That we could predict the future? It would be terrible; so much certainty would become panic and uncertainty!! Life is an adventure in itself precisely for that reason, because it is full of insecurity, that's the beauty of living, to decide each time in accordance with our values because we never know what is going to happen next and it is at that moment, when things occur, that the answer has to come.

“Man is losing his instinct generation after generation; we are systematically educated to act in a socialized way from birth.”

Keysi B.I.: That answer is intuitive? J.D.: Man is losing his instinct generation after generation; we are systematically educated to act in a socialized way from birth; today you ask any child where chickens are born and almost certainly the answer you'll get will be “in the fridge”; we are trained to rely on a salary and the supermarket; our life is very comfortable since we no longer have to think, at the most at what time do supermarkets open or close, and even so, there still will be days in which we will lack bread despite there are convenience stores that remain open 24 hours; we are conditioned by the plans of others and we seek fictional safety and comfort, we live in a fantasy world, they have designed for us a pattern like sheep, and we need to be guided the corral. B.I.: Is there much "smoke selling"? J.D.: Some people come to Keysi looking for security, so I tell them that if they have 20 minutes I will gladly explain to them. I don't think these people have any interest in being misled or having a discipline imposed on them, but that's the way we have been educated, always seeking and depending on someone who tells us how to live our lives. I sincerely believe that there are enough gurus willing to do it; all you have to do is get into the Internet and you'll find hundreds of these

Keysi parasites ready to sell you all the smoke you want to buy, masters who fly, skilled instructors who can knock down tens of people without even touching them... Here the sad thing is not the futility of the alleged "master", but the 20 absurd people that follow the lead, masters of deception, people of the ilk of "I am rich, and if your you're not it's because you're stupid." They are out there, lining up by the dozens willing to impose you their discipline, and they enjoy the power of imposing their ideas on others; these good-for-nothing litter the name and legacy of so many true Masters of the past who devoted body and soul to the transmission of Martial Budo, and today's Masters who live these Arts passionately and who have passed his passion on to us. And I'm not talking about a Martial Art in particular, but the whole of them. Thanks to all of them because they have made possible that Keysi exists today. B.I.: What do you pursue with Keysi? J.D.: I'm not here to impose or tell you the way you must live your life, if you are looking for security, you have to find it within yourself and it will never be security, but credibility to your person. Of course, I don't think I'm smarter than any of you. Believe me when I tell you that any person, regardless of their sex, race or color, can achieve their dreams, and I'm going to explain to you the way in which I learned it in the coal mines during seven long years; and if you do it yourself, you'll get everything you can imagine and it won't be by magic: it's called "work hard and never give up". Only then you'll be able to make your dreams come true.

Training

TRAINING WITH WEIGHTS Since ancient times, in the various training systems of Martial Arts and combat sports, there exists a number of natural forms and homemade devices for the strengthening and effectiveness of our techniques and maneuvers that give us a great support in the regular workout that we perform on our own or in pairs. In Okinawa, Japan or China, we have found that the ancient warriors used household issues, other utensils drawn from machines, or even elements created by their own imagination or needs when our current technology still had not been developed. They also resorted to natural elements such as trees, rocks, stones, nuts, sand, etc. Training with ballast involves attach an extra weight in the hands, feet, waist or neck, depending on the purpose or the sport you play, usually between 500 / 1,000 grams, and 1,500 / 2,000 grams at the start. This is achieved using a special wristbands and anklets ballasted with lead, iron, sand or other material. You must take a special care and begin as in any order of things and situations, from low to high, increasing gradually and to the extent that you see that you do not feel any negative impact on one or more parts of your body. The main objective is that of increasing the power and speed of your punches, kicks, strength of neck or body balance, since when executing movements with an extra weight, the muscles have to make an additional effort. Although not its primary purpose, it also serves to improve agility (if you use ankle weights), because the extra weight is an impediment that acts as a brake in shifting and dodging. Naturally, without the weights, the body is lighter, and the additional strength gained by the muscles results in faster movements. After a good workout with weights, you feel like floating in the wind. This type of training does not serve to gain strength or increase muscle size, so is certainly not a substitute for strength training with weights and machines. But it's a good alternative if you want to increase the power of your blows without losing speed or gaining weight. I also suggest to not leaving your alternate sessions of stretching and flexibility, because without this compensatory workout, you could end up shortening the performance of your muscles and ligaments. For those interested in the aesthetic appearance of the

Training body, it must be highlighted that it improves muscle definition without increasing volume.

How it should be practiced Precautions The following list shows some general tips, how this type of training must be carried out, what things should be done to avoid injuries, techniques to be trained, and more. • Try not to start your training directly without a previous preparation. At least you should make a good general warm-up or, much better, put on the weights only after having been training without them for a while, and the muscles have moved enough. • On the other hand, the use of ballast weights must not be left for the end of our training session, because the risk of injury increases when we are tired. Furthermore, tired muscles have begun to accumulate toxins, so the profit obtained is lower. It also increases the risk of muscle tears, overburdening a tired muscle. • Training sessions should not be long, between 15 to 30 minutes at most, after which, wrist and ankle weights must be removed wrist and ankle until the next day. If you had not trained before ballast, the first few times should not exceed 10 minutes. • There should be no more than one or two sessions a week: the benefit is not obtained while training, but while resting. Increase the number of sessions expecting a spectacular increase power in a couple of weeks, it is useless. The power increase will be achieved almost without realizing it, over time, so it is better not to hurry. • Children and adolescents still growing should not use weights. There is a risk of malformations in their development. In other words, this practice is reserved for adults. • The techniques that are to be develop are exactly the same that are normally practiced without weights: punches, defenses (blocks), kicks, shifting, combinations, etc. But attention: all techniques must be performed at "slow motion", especially the kicks. Rapid movements are almost a guarantee that muscle tears will occur. And don't forget to train always your movements accompanied by the corresponding breathing.

Training

• Before starting to train with weights, we must have a correct mastery of the technique we are going to practice. With the weights on, we shall strive to carry it out as perfectly as possible. Otherwise, in our attempt to lift the weight, we can develop vices and wrong moves that screw up our technique. Try to make series on both sides, observing carefully the way you perform with your "strong hand" and how you do it with the other hand. The strong side depends on whether you're right or left handed. If you're righthanded your strong side is the right, and if you are left-handed, your left side will be stronger. Seek to balance both sides. Normally you should increase your repetitions performed with your weak side until it matches your strong side ... and yet, don't neglect your attention because the strong side tends to predominate. • The weight used in this training has to increase gradually. If it has never been practiced before, it is best to start with 500 grams at most in each wrist or leg, even if it seems that there isn't any extra difficulty. Remember that you are not lifting weights. In this type of training, the muscles and ligaments will be feeling the submission of a larger effort. • If the fighting style that you practice has Kata, Pumse or Kuen, it is interesting to practice them with wrist and ankle weights (at a slow motion, even if the form has fast movements). This combines the practice of the movements contained in the kata, with the increasing of power to perform these techniques. • When you finish your practice and take off the weights, is not advisable to do quick movements, or punching or kicking abruptly, no matter how light and agile you might feel. But you must not stand still either. In this moment it's convenient to do some form of gentle exercise so that the body adjusts back to its own weight.

• If you practiced kicking with ankle weights, it is desirable that at the end of the class you do a little training of elasticity (very smooth and without forcing). Of course, it is necessary to leave a margin of time of about 10 to 15 minutes between one thing and the other: it should not be done immediately afterwards. • Working out with overloading in the muscles increases the risk of stiffness and muscle cramps. Keep that in mind if in the next few days you need to be in good physical condition. • In training routines it usually comes a time when we stagnate and development is impeded. When this happens we must draw on alternative solutions that allow us to improve results. Using ballast in many exercises to increase the load can be a good choice. • One of the ways to evolve in training is to vary the routine so that the muscles don't get used to it, since success lies in the surprise. But the most commonly used way is to increase the intensity of the loads. Often the machines of the gym do not allow us to increase the weight, so we have to resort to other options such as the use of ballast, which especially in the chest and dorsal routines can be very helpful. • The ballast in this type of training is a kind of rope usually tied around the waist and to which is added a dead weight so as to increase the burden that our body represents in itself. It's one of the best ways to make further progress in muscle development once we have reached our maximum in certain exercises, since the excess load means an increase in the exercise intensity. • In our routine workouts we often use our own partner, for instance, as ballast weight. He simply climbs up to our back and we start running several turns, then we change positions and he runs with us on his back. Similarly, we get in guard with the fellow on the

back and we start to execute punches, kicks and combinations. We can also perform Kata movements and selfdefense or combat techniques. At first it will be hard, but with practice we will get used to it and gain strength, endurance and speed. • Using a ballast weight is very simple, but it cannot be applied to any routine. In pectoral and dorsal training it's very helpful using a dumbbell or a weight disc, for example. The pushing exerted by the dead weight to the ground is what will serve us as resistance in training and achieving a greater intensity in the exercises. • Using a ballast weight for pectoral push-ups and dorsal dominates will be very effective. For both routines, ballast is a solution in increasing the intensity of workouts, because being large muscles, as we gain strength in this body part, we usually perform reps with greater comfort with little notice in the muscles involved. • All these exercises are necessary for a proper development of the worked out bodily part, so even if we master them to perfection, we shouldn't banish them from our routines; the ballast weight will be one of the best solutions to move forward and get a quality muscles entirely worked out with proper exercises. • Training with ballast weights, apart from the benefits it brings about, gives us new motivations, breaking the usual routines of traditional styles of hitting in the air or in front of a mirror. Although in past times hard physical training sessions were carried out with or without creative devices, today many of the styles of Martial Arts have become "no contact" or "controlled contact" sports, in which excess contact is prohibited and punishable. Sporting rules are going in the opposite direction to the actual styles of self-defense where "anything goes". So, sport Martial Art has nothing to do with the Martial Art of war.

TRAINING SERIES WITH WEIGHTS IN LEGS. Photo 2) Begin to warm up gradually. This means performing always a series of basic stretching exercises and a minimum pre warm-up before starting to stretch our muscles and ligaments. Then place your foot on the wall bars at a reasonable height, and press your heel down for at least 20 to 30 seconds, then relax and perform trunk-bending, as in the photo. Rest a minute or two and... Photo 3) Move to a higher level in the wall bars and so on. Remember that pain warns you, so use caution and patience. If well conducted, these workouts are very grateful. Both muscles and ligaments are flexible and gradually, with consistency and patience, they and up yielding and stretching, what encourages us to continue. But you must try to avoid as much as possible injuries like muscle tears or fiber breaks, because they may take years to heal. The last photo (8) shows a side preheating with the help of a tree. Like in kicks and combinations of kicks, try to carry out series of 12, 16, 18, etc., reps. At least three or four series by type of kick: front, side, roundhouse, hook and combinations. It is very entertaining, fun and encouraging, as soon as you start to feel your progress.

THE HIGHS & LOWS OF KICKING By Grandmaster John Pellegrini

To the general public one of the most visually exciting aspects of the Martial Arts is the ability of practitioners to effortlessly delivering incredibly high kicks, sometimes accompanied by gravity-defying jumps or nearly acrobatic spinning rotations. The public’s fascination with flashy kicks begun in the 1970s with the release of a wave of martial arts films featuring exciting (and impossible!) fight scenes where both the good and the bad guys, battled each other with fantastic kicking techniques. And, although martial arts films have had their ups and downs in quality and success over the last 40 years, the public’s awe and admiration for fancy kicks has not abated as demonstrated by the popularity of MMA shows and even many video games featuring martial arts fighting. But, as most of us know, the reality of kicking is very different from the perception held by most non-martial artists.

Combat Hapkido

Combat Hapkido Kicking has been part of most fighting systems for thousands of years, although always more prevalent and prominent in the Asian arts than in Western combat methods. And, over the years, the arts that are heavily involved in sport and competition, have evolved kicking techniques to a high degree of scientific refinement. In general, we can separate the arts according to how they employ and approach kicking in 3 main groups: NO KICKING. These fighting methods do not employ kicks or even prohibit their use during competition. Some examples are: Boxing, Judo and some styles of Jujitsu. LIMITED KICKING. These arts teach kicking as one of the weapons available in combat, but prefer low-line kicks. WingChun, JKD, Combat Hapkido, KunTao Silat, Russian Sistema, Krav Maga and some styles of Karate are good examples. HIGH-EMPHASIS KICKING. These arts teach kicking as a primary fighting technique, encouraging high kicks, and with some even specializing in jumping and spinning kicks. Good examples are: TaeKwonDo, Kuk Sool Won, Tang Soo Do, Savate, Capoeira, Kickboxing and some styles of Kung Fu. Of course those groupings are broad generalizations, with many exceptions and nuances based on style, history and

Combat Hapkido

development. Often, even within the same art, there are styles that drastically differ in their kicking philosophy and applications. And that may appear confusing or intimidating to the uninitiated trying to decide which art or style is best for them. But the vast variety and differences of offerings, actually present great opportunities and are beneficial to those seeking a path in the fighting arts. So, in order to make the right choice, individuals interested in learning must first honestly ask themselves exactly what they want to learn and why. What are they interested in….what are they trying to achieve….what are they really looking for. Is it sport competition? Self defense? Athletic abilities? Spiritual enrichment? Cultural experience? A healthy and relaxing activity? The individual must also consider his/her age, physical condition and body type in a realistic assessment. Once all those basic questions have been answered, the range of possible choices will have narrowed considerably. It is not about the importance of kicking. It is not about preferring high or low-line kicks. Both views have their value, both approaches have their merit. No one will disagree that kicks (high or low) are extremely effective and useful weapons in the martial artist’s arsenal. But the philosophy of where, when and how much to use them, is one of the most important technical differences between the various arts and styles. I believe

that it is not a question of which is “better”, high kicks or low kicks; lots of kicks or few kicks. It is about the individual and what the objective is. When I was going through the process of structuring what eventually became my style, Combat Hapkido, I was faced with the important decision of which kicks to include in our syllabus, which ones to modify and which ones to exclude. My selection was based on two simple criteria: Is this kick effective in real street self defense? And, given the proper amount of training, can the majority of students of all ages and physical shapes execute it? As a result of that, because, with Combat Hapkido, my priority, my main objective is and has always been to teach the best self defense techniques, all of the kicks contained in our system are lowline kicks delivered to the lower part of the body. However, during my 30 years in TaeKwonDo, I enjoyed learning and teaching really cool, fancy, flashy kicks, and, although at my age I cannot do them anymore, I still like to watch students execute them. I knew even than that those great kicks were not practical in most real fight scenarios, but a lot of my students were children and young adults, and we did participate in sport competition….so we had fun pushing our kicking abilities to the extreme. It was another place and another time and, as the saying goes, life has a season for everything. So, regardless of where you are in your martial arts journey, if you prefer high kick or low kicks, or if you choose sport, tradition or self defense… just keep on kicking!

Wing Tsun About three years ago, during a friendly chat with some fellow practitioners of W ing Chun, we were discussing about the Classic and Modern styles. That is, about the benefits, advantages, str engths and weaknesses of those branches of Wing Chun Kuen who have tried to "evolve" a traditional style of Martial Arts to make it useful in the present times, o r c o n v e r s e l y, t h o s e w h o , years ago, decided to keep the style as close as possible to the method and training system as Grandmaster Yip Man carried it out in his years of teaching mode in Hong Kong Personally I've always defended the "evolutionary" option because I think that a Chinese boxing style like Wing Chun Kuen must be fundamentally that: a fighting style. In addition, the school where I trained for much of my life always promoted the system as an efficient tool of self-defense and its approach was eminently practical. In short, there was no doubt for me: "The New is Superior to the Old!" However, I recognize that the countless conversations I have had with different masters of classic styles have made me

"The Old and the New"

reflect on some points that today I consider really important, although for a long time they were for me no more than "irrelevant things." In short, all my study and profound look at the style to which I decided to dedicate par t of my life, made me ask myself about a series of questions that I think ever y Mar tial Ar ts practitioner should pose repeatedly without fear: Am I doing it right? Is that really the only way? Why my "colleagues" have another point of view that sometimes it is "even" opposed to mine? The truth is that I had the good fortune of being the disciple of a GREAT MASTER as Dai Sifu Victor GutiĂŠrrez, from whom I learned almost everything I know. And I must highlight something really special about him: a deeply analytical and critical spirit with everything we do. To be always concerned about improving what we do, and especially LOVE for training. In all the years I've been

“Countless times I've heard practitioners say unabashedly expressions like ‘And who cares about concepts or Chinese philosophy? What matters is being able to beat your opponent’.”

“In my trips to China I had the great fortune of interviewing and visiting some of today's Ving Tsun leading masters.”

practicing Martial Arts, I've never met anyone who trained so much and as enthusiastically as Dai Sifu Victor Gutierrez. And he instilled that spirit in us forever. In this journey, I had the opportunity to meet other great men of the "European" Wing Tsun, as Dai Sifu Emin Boztepe, Dai Sifu Saly Avci, and other great masters of the lineage of Grandmaster Leung Ting in Europe in the great EWTO, always managed with great firmness by my Sikung Keith Ronald Kernspecht. I must admit that I always felt (and indeed I feel) very proud of everything we learned there and the great teachings and experiences that I lived in my time at the EWTO, but I also recognize that I always thought that Wing Chun should introduce itself deeply into the roots of the Chinese tradition. Understand me when I say this ... I do not mean to dress in Chinese clothes and let grow a long braid or start eating products from traditional Chinese food (of course that is an option that has to do with the personal tastes of each person). I mean to not forget where we come from, what we are and where we want to go. Countless times I've heard practitioners say unabashedly expressions like "And who cares about concepts or Chinese philosophy? What matters is being able to beat your opponent." And in the end, in the very end, they have their share of reason... But following this, I'd like to issue an affirmation as a mere reflection: Wing Chun Kuen is a style of Chinese boxing. This may sound self-evident, but if we look at it in some depth it might not be so. Practicing a style of Chinese Martial Arts involves paying also attention to a number of intrinsic elements and values such as their origin, philosophy, idiosyncrasies, motivations, etc. If you don't like all this... why don't you choose another option? That is, Wing Tsun, as any other fighting style, has its advantages and strengths, but is not the "ultimate fighting style", like they've tried to make us believe on so many occasions. Wing Chun Kuen is an

Wing Tsun excellent fighting style with a number of features that make it very efficient. But sure there are OTHER STYLESÂĄÂĄ The question is... why do some, who do not like what surrounds Wing Chun and the Chinese Martial Arts, insist to keep practicing this style? Just think about it... The reasoning that I pose today in this article is precisely based on that. In my opinion there is no debate between those who advocate either position: both are partly right! But you will agree with me that we must deepen the style to get all the benefits of it. I recognize that, for much of my life, I only cared whether or not it was effective in combat situations or selfdefense. In fact, today I continue my search for that effectiveness and the application of the techniques and principles to actual and current combat. Through my project "LAB by TAOWS Academy", along with a group of high-level practitioners, I attempt to bring the system to its limits. We train analyzing everything of our style, every little detail of the form and its application. We also use the style under pressure and see what works and what doesn't work. And even why do not work those things that are not helpful (or in a first instance they seem useless). I can say without any fear of being mistaken the GREAT INFLUENCE that traditional styles and my contact with some Masters in Hong Kong have been on my way to train at my school. It's amazing the way that, looking back, I found some "answers" to issues related to

the effectiveness of the system. It may be rare to find solutions or answers to an evolution, by looking at the "old" or "traditional" in a world where everything seems a headlong rush... but THAT'S THE WAY IT IS!! To evolve, you don't have to go always forward. Sometimes, an option may be that of going to the source to check whether the structures and principles of a fighting style are correct and efficient today. This that I'm telling you was materialized in a sentence by my great friend Alfredo Tucci that we used to launch our message to our followers and students: "The Evolution of every ART is / remains at the ESSENCE of its TRADITION." I have to acknowledge the great influence that the masters of Classic Ving Tsun have had in my point of view. This is a really important point that I'd like to share in this month's article with our readers and followers, inviting them to reflect on the subject. In my trips to China I had the great fortune of interviewing and visiting some of today's Ving Tsun leading masters. As all those who follow us in "The Wing Chun column" of Budo International can see, in recent months we have published some very interesting interviews with Ving Tsun figures in Hong Kong. Next July I return to continue with it... I believe to be essential regaining the connection with the

source, with those who have drunk directly from various Ving Tsun lineages, but very especially those who have had direct contact with Grandmaster Yip Man or his most distinguished disciples. We will continue visiting many of them and conducting these interviews because I consider it essential establishing the right balance between "old and new". When people ask me the reason of my obsession with rescuing that link and showing these ideas the community of Wing Chun fans in Europe, my answer is easy: I THINK that Wing Tsun is much better when it contains EVERYTHING IT IS. I do not want to generate controversy with this statement; I'm just trying to pose a challenge for those who want to practice KUNGFU: Let's try to do what in

Wing Tsun China is called "Kung Fu life." As I usually comment in my seminars or trainings, I understand that this way of conceiving Martial Arts is not for everyone. At a time in which fashion dictates and generates trends that make our system (and other traditional systems) look like something "outmoded" or "unusable", I propose you a system that is at the midpoint between "old and new." A system where respect for the elderly, for those who transmitted to us the seeds of knowledge; for the cultural heritage of a people that today is a heritage of humanity; for the "etiquette" that allows practitioners to be respectful of the others, polite and courteous to the people around them; people always ready to sacrifice themselves to help others and worried that this "legacy" with almost 500 years old can be transmitted to the next generation in the best possible condition. NORMAL people who want to find every day the best version of themselves through KUNG FU. This is my approach, the one I want to share with those who train or study in my schools... And, of course... I want them to practice an "efficient" system of self-defense (as it couldn't be otherwise). I hope that this reflection can serve some to understand the importance of the WHOLE in Wing Chun and that we are able to transform day by day what we do

As we have documented over the past 6 years, Kyusho translates as "Vital Point" and is a study of the human condition and it's frailties. Although similar in appearance to the ancient acupuncture and pressure point massage methods, the Kyusho method can also deal with immediacy for certain trauma as well as easily rid the body of common ailments. Within seconds we canm begin to relax and ease the pain associated with headaches, backaches, muscle and internal cramps, hiccups, asthma, nausea, sinus congestion and so many more common maladies both of natural causes as well as trauma inflicted. This is all performed quickly and efficiently without expensive pills or drugs that can take 20 minutes or more to work or have serious side effects on other organs or body functions. The ramifications are enormous and we believe to be of such worth for continued research and societal benefit. This type of holistic approach has been effective for many thousands of years in cultures throughout the world and we have added even more possibility and purpose to it for you. Once you learn these simple methods of Kyusho First Aide, you too can help your family and friends with many of these common ailments we each suffer through. Let this serve as an historical record of how these methods developed and the other health possibilities they hold for day-to-day living. However it is not the full curriculum, as one would expect, the depth and intricacies can only be conveyed with hands on application and practice under the watchful eye of an instructor. The consistent practice of these methods will not only increase your abilities to relieve the practiced formulas, but also instruct you in the intuitive application of many other health issues. They should not be considered standalone formulas, but rather ways to correct certain problems within the human body based on the foundation presented.

With the visit to our studies of the abbot and founder of the Monastery Golgul, Jeog Un Seol, we find ourselves facing again an event that marks the meeting between East and West within the framework of our publication; something we've always favored and sought diligently from these pages. There are not few the Korean Martial Arts students who feel the call of the Martial and internal aspects in their practices, but haven't found so far satisfaction to their concerns in other styles whose evolution has acquired perhaps a more sporting drift. However, in the Korean tradition there is something

for all tastes, and as a proof of this we are pleased to bring to our pages, probably as a first in many countries where Budo International is published, one of those bastions of the true Eastern martial tradition, unfortunately almost lost in recent decades as the result of acculturation and imposition of Western lifestyles around the globe. Sun Mu Do is a Martial Art with capital letters, a full style where the body training accompanies the tempering of the spirit for the development of self-knowledge.

There are still so many things we ignore about Korea! Korean Martial traditions are an endless array of surprises. The last visit today in our pages opens in this way a new stage in their history. No, it's not that they have been closed to Westerners. On the contrary, there have been quite a few students who have had the opportunity to spend some time in the Temple, one of the oldest in the country. What happens is that the spreading of its teachings on video and in the West is indeed a desirable and exciting novelty. In a well-defined historical context and in the framework of the Korean martial tradition, the fusion of the principles of the most exquisite Zen meets in the Sun Mu Do the most intense but refined training formulations. Here there’s no sports content, you will find only those ingredients of effort and intensity that make up and accompany the inner search of the students. In this way, tradition brings us back its knowledge through the

practice of martial techniques, in which the neophyte is compelled to confront his or her own psycho emotional limits. From that point everything is meditation. Sun Mu Do is therefore a Zen Martial Art deeply rooted in the Buddhist tradition. Harmonizing of body, emotion and mind; purifying and removing all that dulls and fills our senses, so as to achieve the liberation of the spirit and the imperishable that dwells in us, a higher state of consciousness known as Nirvana. Its Grand Master, Abbot of the Monastery, Grandmaster Jeong Un Seol honored us with his visit, and we all in Budo International enjoyed learning with him. Master Jeong Un Seol is a scholar in a kind of Korean Buddhism known as "Gumgan Gyu Nggwan", which bases its work on the practice of Martial Arts. This type of work has twinned this Monastery with the famous Chinese Shaolin Monastery, with which it shares this approach that makes it so interesting for the readers of this publication.

“The presence of one of the experts who teaches in the temple, a woman of exquisite personality and serene beauty, highlighted in the Master's entourage: a teacher of Korean dance and internal techniques, some of which are shown in this first video.

Korean Arts Master Jeong is a person of a great intellectual formation who has given class in the most prestigious universities in Korea, such as Dongguk University, Seoul National University, Korean National University of Arts, or the Pochon College of Medicine for 8 years. But what highlights most when you meet him is his high energy differential, that is, the intensity of his personality. The Grand Master also leads an association which brings together 8 styles of deep Korean martial tradition, traditional schools that are little known abroad, and he has promised for the future to contact Budo International to begin an outreach work all over the world, through the publication of reports and instructional videos, of which, in fact, he himself starred the first one in our studies to present the main aspects that make his teaching. He was assisted in his task by one of his Korean pupils and a group of French students who have been following his teachings for years. One of them, a young redheaded lad who appears in the pictures that illustrate the article, has been living in the temple for three years, forming himself in what certainly is a long way that goes far

beyond the mere physical ability. It's people like him who, when the time comes, will be capacitated and entitled to spread the foundations of a martial tradition whose essential component transcends the learning of simple combat techniques, a knowledge that requires years of experience not to be denatured or minimized. The presence of one of the experts who teaches in the temple, a woman of exquisite personality and serene beauty, highlighted in the Master's entourage: a teacher of Korean dance and internal techniques, some of which are shown in this first video. Indeed, Sun Mu Do delves into some aspects, rather unusual in other martial styles, like the practice of Yoga. It is a very dynamic Yoga they call Zen Yoga. Generally, tables of perfectly opposed and complementary movements are combined in a harmonious way. Some of them have been included in the video and make up, in my opinion, one of the most complete Martial warming up methods I've ever seen. As a Martial Art, Sun Mu Do naturally possesses combat techniques. This training facet reflects an internal direction. The techniques take great care to maintain balance and minimize the energy expenditure. Of course, as part of the Korean tradition, they are very complete in terms of centrifugal movements and with regard to the use of the legs. It is no doubt a very demanding style concerning the students’ self-control, trained to force to the maximum possible extent the awareness of the movement against the mechanization of it. The Gi Gong techniques, another traditional practice of the Temple, are an essential part in the lear ning process, and the perfect combination that represents training them along with Yoga techniques, tune up the body before the sessions of Zen meditation that monks and visitors practice in long days in which community work, training in nature,

Sun Mu Do is a demanding art that requires a high level of commitment, but is able to provide students what many were looking for in other Korean martial styles, which have taken a more sporting drift. As an internal Martial Art, Sun Mu Do possesses the strength of a projection that will be slow but firm in the West in the coming years, attracting the interest of students who, linked to martial systems of Korean roots, want to deepen the martial aspects of selfknowledge and sincere search for a way of consciousness. Therefore it is a pleasure to bring to you this premiere, it will be in many countries, and as is customary in this company, provide the interested parties an audiovisual vehicle that allows them to deepen their knowledge of it in the form of DVD. A job that we are sure will please many of you.

Kyusho “The use of force issue is one that is realizing fierce public attention and enforcement, which is making the field officer's work all that much harder as well as dangerous to their personal well being and safety.

The Law Enforcement Program Law Enforcement Agencies as well as Personnel are under public scrutiny more than at any other time in History. The use of force issue is one that is realizing fierce public attention and enforcement, which is making the field officer's work all that much harder as well as dangerous to their personal well being and safety. Whereas the brave Men and Women are facing more brutal and uncaring criminals, with little regard for life, they, the ones charged with protecting us from this vile element, are being forced to treat the criminal with sensitivity and regard to protect them from even minor injury. Law Enforcement is at a disadvantage that is being pressed upon them by governmental bureaucracy at an alarming pace, which in turn is embolden the criminal element even more. The criminals know the legal limits imposed and work it against the unfortunate Law Enforcement Agents caught in the middle. It is in light of this dilemma that the Kyusho Program has been developed. As each situation or event an Officer faces has stages of possible escalation, the Kyusho program has been designed for such probabilities. These stages begin not with initial stages of confrontation such as verbal commands, but where the event escalates to the need for control and restraint. Such restraints and controls as preparation and administration of uncuffed search, initiating and actual handcuffing to lifting the perpetrator from the prone position for transport.

Briefing Kyusho for Law Enforcement is trained in 3 levels and each in incremental as well as escalating training sections. It should not and cannot be assimilated in one session as many courses attempt. Each training session must be concentrated on one concept or target and this must be trained throughout the session to acclimate the Officer and make it a natural response. In turn each part of the level must have worth and diversity enough that the single method is not boring or of little value to some officers. The method must be usable by Male and Female, Young and Older, Novice and Experienced equally. Also the officers must be free to experiment with the presented material in session as it relates to needs they encountered in the field. This will make it real for them as well as help them integrate it in their natural responses. In this first level we address one human weakness and one reflexive reaction that each Officer must not only be aware of, but to integrate into their methodologies. We also work with 12 initial points for this crucial stage of escalation, turning from verbal command to physical assertion. These are crucial elements in Law Enforcement as we see a rise in Female Officers (who face mostly larger stronger male criminals), as an equalizer for the aging Officers that are facing Younger, Stronger and Quicker perpetrators, also as a non-injurious yet more powerful way to manipulate and control the criminal even facing these disadvantages.

Kyusho Human Weakness

Reflexive Reaction

A universal human weakness is due to the influence of the right hemisphere control of the brain over the left physical actions of the body and vice versa. The human body has far more strength pulling as opposed to pushing due to more integration of muscles to facilitate this action. This is also in part because the pulling action moves the limbs toward the brain side in control. This is exactly the opposite of what most officers are taught or instinctively try to do (in their own natural pulling action), to get the arm of the perpetrator in position to move them, take them to the floor or even to position the arm for cuffing. Understanding. this one human trait can give the officer a distinct edge, even facing a larger stronger opponent As an example and way to test this process on your own, have a person attempt to use strength by pressing forward with arms extended. To push them back requires you to have more strength, size and even stamina in this position. But if you quickly cross their arms from the wrists to the elbows, the leftbrain control for the right side body as well as the right brains control of the left body is temporarily lost and the perpetrator can be pushed very easily. This is because when you quickly cross their hands or arms, the brain becomes temporarily confused and the control and or strength of the body is weakened considerably. This can also be easily demonstrated with another action commonly needed and used on the arm, being to pull it to a laterally extended position. If you attempt to pull a persons arm sideways away from their body, the strength is at it's maximum. However if you push it toward the center, their resistance is less than half that original strength. To demonstrate this weakness again have a person stand with two arms extended forward. Feel the resistance and strength the person has when you attempt this action and how easily it is for them to keep heir arms in front of them. Now to illustrate how easy it is to push against their arm, have them start in the same posture with arms extended and feel how easy it is to now press their arms toward the center. To work this into a handcuffing procedure, the Officer, instead of pulling the perpetrators arm outward, should first push the arm toward the center and then as it temporarily weakens (it will be felt easily by the Officer), then continue pressing down in a circling motion and out to the side. The time lag for the brain to regain control of the limb will be ample enough to get the arm in position. Naturally practicing this over and over again will develop the habit, skill and success needed.

A reflexive action of the body is to maintain balance by instantaneous body reflex. As an example if you were on the deck of a boat in calm water you are able to stand quite easily unaided. If a sudden wave was to jolt and tilt the boat and your balance was jeopardized, your entire body would also jolt into a reflexive and reactive state. Arms shoot out to the sides for ballast and balance, as do the legs without conscious thought or a moment's hesitation. The hesitation comes after the reflexive reaction to monitor if balance was maintained. This illustrates the body when face with sudden force will strengthen as well, as the muscles tighten to react and gain wider posture to regain balance. To utilize this in a law enforcement application, we can initiate this reflex in a perpetrator. We learned from the Human Weakness mentioned above, that pressing the limbs in is substantially easier to accomplish than pulling away from the body. Well if you press the arm inward the whole body will weaken and as it does a quick pulse or push to offset the balance slightly will initiate this reflex reaction with arms and legs shooting outward to seek or maintain balance. Also mentioned was the hesitation factor after this reaction‌ this is the time when arms and legs are extended and no control or resistance will be possible. This is the moment that the Officer can gain advantage and to get the arm of the perpetrator in position to move them, take them to the floor or even to position the arm for cuffing. The opposite is also true as there is always a positive and a negative in everything. When a body is faced with strength it will respond with like strength and consequently muscle constriction and tightening. Strength must have a base to initiate and maintain from, so if the base is quickly removed the muscles must relax and consequently weaken the body. To illustrate this condition get into a clinch with a partner and instantly tighten your body, placing resistance or strength on them. Even without explanation, that pressure will initiate them do the same just as the reflexive reaction instantly takes hold. Now to gain the opposite response, just as quickly in any garb or strength match, relax to remove the base of their strength and initiate a total and unexpected relaxation, followed again by the hesitation factor as the brain and body monitor the balance. To utilize this in Law Enforcement, if you know that a sudden strength will cause their reflexive strength and your relaxing and un-basing this strength will weaken their whole body, you can apply pressure and wait for their resistance, then suddenly relax and remove all their strength and balance as well. Now again this is the moment that the Officer can

gain advantage and to get the arm of the perpetrator in position to move them, take them to the floor or even to position the arm for cuffing.

Debriefing These two concepts are natural in response, but unnatural in the deliberate use. Just knowing these is not enough, as the feel and sensitivity must be trained initially. This is not a new program, but one that has been field tested by Law Enforcement Officers in many Countries and

Legal Parameters. It has been not only successful on an individual basis for hundreds of Officers in the field, corrections or security, but it is now making its mark in departmentally and even on a governmental basis. This information is dedicated to the Brave and Resilient Members of Law Enforcement around the world‌ Thank you for what you do! In the next installment we will begin with individual Kyusho (Vital Points) and how it relates to Law Enforcement.

"What beautifies the desert is that it hides a well of water somewhere." Antoine de Saint-Exupery "What we know is a water drop; what we ignore is the ocean. Isaac Newton Flow doesn't mean being sloppy; definitely, water is not so, for it doesn't leave any corner uncovered... it reaches everywhere! As asturian people say, "water has a very fine snout". Unhurried, coupling to the circumstances, water is a metaphor for the persistence and extreme adaptability. It's the paradigm of changing in the form without transforming the essence. Water catalyzes life; without water, the land dries and gets barren; and the fire, without a controller, spreads everywhere and the air, turned into a sandstorm, cannot carry the fertility of the clouds, or the force of the changes. Even iron is wrought by the use of fire in the forges! Water is the cradle of all life, the primary livelihood of both inanimate and animate beings, all of them "bags" of hotter and hotter waters, according to their degree of evolution, and adapted to a change that we accompany, of which we are part, and not guilty, as some would have us believe. The "terminal sin" is the JudeoChristian guilt of environmentalism. Water comforts us, cleanses us, and blesses us. Wet in the rivers of the moment, we swim, fight, wreck... Flowing, adapting to the barriers, going down, not opposing anything, water is the perfect analogy of humility, adaptation and not conflict. The water wins aimlessly; following its nature, it surrounds any obstacle and teaches us how to overcome, but with wisdom, free from wear and tear, without losing sight of the goal. What is a rock on the road, a mountain‌? Even trapped in between cliffs and narrow passages, water filters, or evaporates if such a thing is not possible; nothing stops its destination. It's been the river of life that has left in my shores these texts, which today I share in book format. And I say "it left" because all authorship is at least confusing, since we are all debtors of those before us, those who inspired and keep inspiring us, of the floating clouds of the collective unconscious, and even, who knows!, of the spirits and the consciousness around us. I can't teach anything because I don't know anything, but for those who wish to hear my poems, here I leave my sincere and truly felt thoughts, every time more felt and less thought, because mind is a deceptive device that sees what it wants to see and I’ve learned to be suspicious about it.

REF.: • DVD/SERAK-1

Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a very brutal and devastating Art. The Arts concept its to dominate and take over battleground and space, fast dominating space and engulfing opponents to prevent them from being able to use their weapons or body. Once space is acquired, the base and angle are taken to control opponents rotation or projection, rooting or uprooting is produced from the smallest expression of touch or angle and base position, this we call “Lengket” or sticky. Keeping very close to opponents when striking or using a weapon and putting opponents on “Slywa” or weightless stage of spinal and muscle misalignment. Once rooting takes place, the strike makes massive contact in the body that has no muscle or skeletal protection. “Sambuts” are finishes meaning something very hard to walk away from especially when compression of neck or spine, so finishing means its a done deal. The opposite of that is a “Buang” that stands for throws less devastating in the beginner levels but taught to learn mechanics that in later phases of development of the student or practioner can be modified to “Sambuts” for devastating throws. Compressing skeletal structure, weapons and body structures or striking, grapping defense and offence are all played and studied in our platforms. In this video there's a beginner “Pantjar” platform, also the “Jurus”, which are the playbooks of the system of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak, are played here. What happens when two people practice Chi-Sao, what is the meaning of their practice and what the objectives? In this 3rd DVD, "Chi Sao from the base to an advanced level," Sifu Salvador SĂĄnchez addresses perhaps the most important aspect of Wing Chun: ChiSao, the soul of the system itself, which provides the practitioner with some special characteristics which are completely different from others, and gives him great virtues. This role deals with some aspects quite basic in principle, but as you delve into them, they'll be surprising to you. It is a very clear feature traditional Chinese culture; what it's very obvious at first glance, it nevertheless contains a second or third reading, which will surely change your approach, practice and understanding. We will discuss how to practice Chi Sao through our working drills and how to apply those drills, that ability in a sparring, linking certain concepts, perhaps not so much tied to traditional Kung Fu, such as biomechanics, structures, knowledge of physics, etc., in order to obtain better results in our practice.
