n ant performs its daily functions through the woods. Focused on its tasks, it jumps unexpectedly into a leaf fallen on the ground with such fortune and at the very time that an overflow from the river entering the land puts the leaf to float dragging it into the stream. So are we individuals in the river of life and change: forces proportionally similar to that of an ant, facing enormous powers such as the furious rapid of a runaway river that descends unrestrained between the rocky cliffs. So is also humanity, facing the river of changes. So small... and so powerless... That's why I smile sadly when I see politicians promising the impossible, begging for votes, falsifying realities. The world of men is only one bubble tucked into a larger one, like the ant and the river. The nature of things is what it is. You can make a dam, but sooner or later the water will find its way to the sea. The river of history opened floodgates and the communicating vessels theory has proved to be working. Globalization is a historical power, and no matter how much it's rigged, the flow of liquids in motion is causing torrents of unstoppable changes. In the West, where we lived in our bubble, the opening of the floodgates is beginning to cause casualties. The first is the middle class, because when your communicating vessel is at 100 and that of the others is just at 5, all you can hope for is that yours starts to follow a downward path. The "emerging countries" (a well-fitting name for these economies!) have already emerged and the big island, the primary Lemuria, the Pangaea of the humans, the mother of all lands, China, has awakened in its enormity; without lifting a finger, without a change, without having to make any concession, the Chinese have finally stamped their foot against the floor. Europe, a drag of the twentieth century Rome, shipwrecking in nationalist selfishness and medieval smallholdings, breaks in two between the South and the North, while the Czarist East is burning and in the West, Britannia is castled in its "differences" like a balloon

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” Winston Churchill

caught by the Americas. In that scenario, the South powder keg explodes; the Arab Spring (which is already softening up with autumn rains) was nothing more than measles and, from a bit lower, fever keeps seriously rising with the Ebola. Leader and winner of the latest global strife, America yields without giving out its economic leadership to China and sticks a thorn in the flesh of oil producers, who with the fraking or hydraulic fracturing, see how their bargain is running out, even before the deposits are empty. But, above all... we are too many! And global warming probably has more to do with the breathing of all mankind than with anything else. Laugh if you want! But it sure is like that and no one dares to say, because it is frowned upon and is very politically incorrect! Years ago, we learned that methane and nitrous oxide content in the flatulence of cows, affected climate change more than anything else. But, what is it that has grown more in recent centuries on the planet? Yes, you got it, we are too many and, like my friend Lorenzo used to say over 30 years ago, everyone wants to eat three times a day, like an English lord. You can't extract water from an empty well, the saying goes. Plugs in communicating vessels have been partially removed, and liquids in the pipes are adjusting in a sort of up-and-down wave swell. In the West, perhaps there will be times in which we'll go up a little, like a series of stronger waves that could deceive us amid an ebbing tide, but there's no adjustments or magic methods so that the nature of things take its course. Those who shout "we can" are paradoxically only the cry of the powerless, as empty and useless as sterile is the sperm spilled by the man hung in the gallows. Nobody will "bell the cat", because it's not a cat but a fire-breathing dragon, and in lava no one can surf. Harsh times are to come for our Western cultures... the clash of civilizations, no matter how bad the situation can be and despite the many stomachs it may upset, is nothing compared with the groundswell that is starting to break through. The Tsunami is here, folks! And in the meantime, all we do is look at our own nails...

The "Kyusho Tactical Control Program" (KTCP), was designed for Subject control escalation with Legal, Medical and Tactical Deployment research, field-testing and coordination. The scope of this program is for use by but not limited to, Law Enforcement, Security, Emergency Medical or Response, Coast Guard, Military, Governmental Agencies, Body Guards and Personal Security. This Basic Module is comprised of one set of 12 primary targets and integrated into 4 modules of escalating force restraint continuums. There are several weak structures in the human body that can be utilized by an Agent to simply gain control of a perpetrator more efficiently than conventional use of force methods. This would be in the protocol should a situation escalate past the verbal command stage. These Kyusho (Vital) points are where the Agent can make use of internal systems of physical control such as, Nerves, Tendon Structure and natural Nerve Reflexes of the body. Not requiring heavy force Fine or complex motor control or even sight… all of which is subject to failure and loss in high adrenaline states. This information is dedicated to the Brave and Resilient Members of these Agencies around the world… Thank you for what you do!

THE ART OF NEGOTIATING We had agreed to meet in order to tape his video just a few months before the terrible events of September 11th. Lieutenant Omar arrived on a non-stop flight from New York with his team of impeccably uniformed assistants. At that time no one could have possibly imagined the work that the city’s security forces would have to carry out trying to save lives in the attack on the World Trade Center. Doubtless many of Omar’s colleagues, students and friends have lost their lives in that labor. Despite the many criticisms directed at the security and intelligence forces of the U.S.A. since the attacks on New York and Washington, it is still possible that they have the best specialists in the world of security. We all know that a level 10 security is not possible, however the world doesn’t accept that and chooses to demand the impossible. Omar is one of the front line experts. He trains people like himself who have to face the toughest situations in order to learn how to solve problems as negotiators. He told me in our interview: “When you are in a hostage situation you are totally alone and you need to be able to make life or death decisions, and so people selected for these tasks

must not only be physically prepared but they must also have nerves of steel”. I asked him how someone could train for such work and this was his answer: “Well, they make us go through all kinds of tests, and after three days without sleep or food they interrogate you and put you into situations in which you have to make the correct decision.” Without a doubt martial artists represent a group of people who have many of the attributes needed by security experts and their techniques can be adapted to very different situations: “Kokkar is a combat system of direct application which has been developed to meet extremely high risk situations and even though it is based on Martial Arts its techniques are fundamentally of a professional nature”. We saw him in action and we liked what he did. He demonstrated professionalism and determination and a level of maturity that you don’t often see in someone so young. But Omar has already had a full life. During his stay in Europe he went to various unlikely places. Some of his trips are unexpected and others secret. We know for example that he went to Israel and that he also visited Italy, but even as I write these lines we have still not had any news of him and I really hope that he wasn’t in New York on that fatal day in September because as an expert in “the front line of action” he answered directly to the United States Federal Government in extraordinary situations. In any case here is his work with our magazine and his video, which is a jewel for professionals, and anyone interested in live combat.

Omar Martinez Sesto A Super Expert Lieutenant Omar Martinez Sesto has an impressive curriculum. He was born in Argentina and was headhunted by the Americans for his tremendous gifts both as a martial artist and for his strength of character. He is an official level 3 trainer – Special Tactics -, for the A.P.M.I.A. group (American Police & Military Instructor’s Ass.) with six years of teaching experience in Florida, New York and Los Angeles with various components of the following Special Forces: • H.E.A.T. (Hazardous Entry and Arrest Team) • S.O.T. (Special Operations Team) • S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics Team) • H.B.T.T. (Hostage Barricade and Terrorist Team) • S.O.R.T. (Special Operations Response Team)

• U.S. Marshalls – S.O.G. (Special Operations Group) • F.B.I. (Federal Bureau of Investigation) • C.I.A. (Central Intelligence Agency) • S.E.A.L. Teams – U.S. Navy. • U.S. Army Special Forces • Sheriff’s Department. As such he is the brains behind the special KOKKAR combat system which is a method specialized in hand to hand combat, special tactical disarming and optional weapons (which makes special reference to the tactical knife) which has already been adopted by a large number of high risk teams because it is seen as one of the most practical and efficient systems which can be used by negotiating teams and secret agents. Lieutenant Omar Martinez Sesto has been presented with two special awards during his career: • The Iron Eagle, awarded for honor and merit, (Washington, 1996). • The Golden Eagle for meritorious service (Washington, 2001).

The American Experts speak:

The special Kokkar combat system

A lot of people say things and then unfortunately we later find out that that isn’t the case at all and so we wanted to gather together information about this officer from several well-known and highly respected experts in the field. These are their expressed opinions:

There are a large number of special combat systems, which provide theories as well as operational responses to the different problems that inevitably come up after each failed High Risk Situation. Most of these systems claim to develop simple answers to these problems based on arguments such as “absorption time” or “ operational efficiency ratios”. They adhere to the formula that states, “Least complexity equals more speed in the field (that is to say less time) equals more efficiency”. If we do a quick and superficial analysis of this proposal we find that it seems logical and highly practical, but in truth it is essentially inapplicable because it does not take into account the reality of High Risk Situations (H.R.S). These situations are characterized precisely by the extreme operational complexity necessary to maximize the margin of success of the actions as well as the highly unstable dynamics of the events. On the other hand an important number of X variables (unknown factors such as the exact number of offenders, exact data on weapons, ammunition, and rations; whether a hostage situation exists, exact information

"Omar has created the best program of optional weapons that this unit has ever used. His skills and competence make the execution of his system truly terrifying”. - Captain John Marino, Director O.S.T., Florida "I have been in the field of law enforcement for 25 years and KOKKAR offers some tremendously effective perspectives on action for the Special Forces”. Sergeant Mark Gibson, Head Instructor Special Teams, New York. "Lieutenant Martinez Sesto has shown the KOKKAR system to be feasible and at the same time to increase the margin of operational efficiency in High Risk Units”. Frank Talbott, Director F.O.E., New York, Florida, Los Angeles.

about the state and or condition of same, the modus operandi of the criminal which would allow his future actions to be anticipated, or knowledge about the existence or not of an escape route and so on). All these characteristics produce a critical situation, which is beyond the action and response capacity of conventional forces. The inherent complexity of high-risk situations is clearly reflected in the contents of the professional qualifying programs for Special Groups as in the case of “Close Combat” and “Hand to Hand combat” which tend to be developed in a way that is integrated with the C.B.Q. (Close Battle Quarter). In the opinion of many experts in special police combat, special combat without weapons or with alter native weapons (for example: the knife) is of relative or secondary importance. They hold that the Special Forces must give priority to instruction in special weapons and they are correct. However, there are specific cases of highly specialized groups (for example the "Hostage Barricade and Terrorist Team", the S.O.R.T. "Special Operations and Response Team", the H.R.T. "Hostage Rescue Team", and the T.O.U. "Tactical Operations Units") in hostage rescue situations and drug trafficking in

Police Kempo which training in O.W. (Optional Weapons) and H.T.H.S.C. (Hand to Hand Special Combat) has top priority (Priority 1). This training is of vital importance in the case of groups on hostage rescue missions for the agent or negotiator who penetrates the "Hot Zone" (conflict zone) generally speaking unarmed or in the majority of cases unable to open fire without putting the life of the hostages at risk. On the other hand the Special Anti Drug Squads regularly use secret agents who find themselves in extremely delicate situations as they attempt to infiltrate the criminal circle, maintain a presence and operate within it. A typical situation for these agents would be the interviews with the so-called “brains” of these activities, which always imply the impossibility of taking firearms. In such a way that in the case of suspicion and/or conflict the survival chances of the

operative are determined by his level of preparedness in optional weapons and special hand to hand combat. Especially for these groups and for the rest in general K.S.C.S. has prepared Theories of Action and Instructional Programs based on material for Special Hand to Hand Combat (H.T.H.S.C. – C.S.C.) and Tactical & Fighter Combat Knife, which responds to the different planning and projects carried out by the Security Forces. It is also important to point out that despite the fact that high risk actions often imply the application of the "Final Option", unless perceived otherwise, the units should always protect the life of both the innocent victims and the criminals. Given this fact in the first phase of K.S.C.S., the actions are developed with the objective of neutralization without death so that they can then progress to more severe levels of application. K.S.C.S. is characterized by multiple

actions and the reasons for this are as follows: 1) Due to the special characteristics of this type of situation it is quite feasible that the first action does not produce the theoretically desired effect, which is why training is done within a “model of action” which develops the capacity to flow with the unexpected changes which normally occur during such interventions. 2) To cancel each and every possible response to our actions by the criminal. • Although it is improbable that all the possible responses by the aggressor can be covered, each sequence builds up a series of “habits” which by means of mental speed and concentration allow an efficient control of the offender’s physical possibilities. 3) To overload or “saturate” the criminal’s mental processing. . • When faced with weapons or in situations of hand to hand combat it

Professional Defense

is very important to understand that whatever action the offender takes or is going to take is initiated by a mental decision and a neurological order. In order to overcome or cancel his ability to react the concept of “saturation” has been developed. 4) Angles – Positioning and Protection Zones. • Continuous actions allow us to manipulate the adversary’s body and improvise a human shield in the face of aggressors. At the same time the uninterrupted positioning over the criminal makes it difficult for his

colleagues to shoot you or attack you. At the same time the constant searching for correct defense and attack positions allows you to perform the opening or closing of combat zones, retrieve or capture weapons and search for zones of protection. In conclusion, K.S.C.S. is a highly specialized applied system, which is based on the scientific study of human physiology, which guarantees a high m a rg i n o f o p e r a t i o n a l e f f e c t i v e n e s s i n C . Levels of Kokkar Special Combat System The various courses offered have three levels of content. Each one has different degrees of aggression with its corresponding logistical response methodology. The levels are: I. Blue level – S.R.T. (Strategic Response Team) II. Green level – T.R.T. (Tactical Response Team) III. Red level – S.O.T. (Special Operations Team)

Blue Level – S.R.T. (STRATEGIC RESPONSE TEAM) TARGET GROUP: State and Metropolitan Police OBJECTIVE: Neutralization T. C. GROUP (TECHNIQUES CONTROL): divided into two: a) For D.N. (Direct Neutralization): by application of P.T.P. (Pressure Tactical Points). How does this work? By means of direct pressure on the nerves and specific arteries whose effect is simultaneously achieved in two areas: Brain: by applying P.T.P. the aggressor reaches his neural level of tolerance so that he loses consciousness and where the target therefore is the “psyche”. Body: by applying P.T.P. a paralyzing shock is produced in the

body whose consequence is a shortterm incapacity to perform any physical action and where the target therefore is “physical”. When should this be applied? In those situations where nonapplication implies a high level of potential danger and where the main priority is to end the aggression. Summing up therefore the P.T.P. group is applicable in those situations where the capacity of the agent or agents to neutralize may be quickly exceeded. b) For I.N. (Indirect Neutralization): By means of the application of immobilization and unbalancing (which is always done in conjunction with P.T.P.) How does this work? Using a manipulation of the skeletal and muscular system and more concretely, applying it on the articulations corresponding to the shoulder, elbow, wrist and finger areas. The objective of this manipulation is to “close” the articular mobility of these areas, which in K.S.C.S. are considered key areas because the aggressor’s actions are initiated there. This technical group requires prior preparation for its effective application. When should this be applied? In those situations in which a certain degree of potential control is maintained and where the attacks are isolated and not complex. This group allows an ample spectrum of manipulation and mobility over the aggressor’s body, which facilitates its immediate delivery.

Green Level – T.R.T. (TACTICAL RESPONSE TEAM) TARGET GROUP: federal police, intelligence agency, secret service, and U.S. Army (Marine Corps, U.S. Navy). OBJECTIVE: Neutralization II (including the possible application of "The Final Option") T.C. GROUP (TECHNIQUES CONTROL): the concepts of D.N. and I.N. are based on “one dynamic group”. At this level different types of aggression are possible with the following characteristics: • Multiple aggressors with or without weapons • Firearms (short and long) • Restricted spaces (with and without innocent civilians) • Ample spaces (with and without innocent civilians) • Different combat scenarios: houses, buildings, airports and so on. How does it work? By applying “selective sensitivity” and “peripheral vision” which are concepts exclusive to the K.S.C.S: method. The application of these concepts allows the agent to adapt dynamically to the “sudden and continuous changes” which are characteristic of these situations and at the same time endowing him with responses whose application represents a broad range of possibilities. When to apply it? In hostage situations and varying degrees of terrorist actions.

RAPE AND MURDER Sexual violence has increased so much in recent years that in the United States, for example, exceeds one million per year, becoming a huge epidemic. RAPE is no longer just a problem involving women, but also children, and consequently, our society in general should educate children, youth and adults alike on their rights. But while society doesn't wake up to this reality, women must help themselves.

Women and Martial Arts

Fu-Shih Kenpo

S

ome years ago in the United States, a mental health study was conducted in which about 9,000 female in all schools around the country were interviewed getting amazing results. 25% of women in these schools had been raped at some time. Over 50% of these violations were made by romantic friends. And almost all the victims were between 15 and 25 years old. "Over 90% of them

didn't report the incident." In Spain, in recent years, we have been informed about the abuses and humiliations children and adult women suffer constantly. Aggressions, abuses of all kinds, rapes and deaths are not alien to American statistics. This is something that happens all over the world. Cases like girls of Alcacer; Anabel Segura; the rapes in Huelva perpetrated by the gym teacher of a school: Victor JosĂŠ Mojarro had raped 17 girls, the older of them being scarcely 12 years of

age. Other recent headlines remind us of the Spanish statistics. Women die each month at the hands of their husbands. And they are not sick or crazy; husbands, ex-husbands, boyfriends, partners or lovers who kill their women are just MURDERERS. In Spain occur annually 300,000 physical attacks on women. And many of them have a tragic outcome. These and many other victims of our country, not only make us consume in sadness, but also force us to think about how to prevent and train our own children to try to avoid such tragedies from occurring in our families; God forbids!

Women and Martial Arts Many violent men are able to keep a picture of respectable people in their jobs. The crime of rape is the only one in which the victim requires a "Certificate of having defended herself".

WHY SO MANY RAPES ARE NOT REPORTED TO THE POLICE? THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS: 1) The already traumatized victim can't stand any more stress and trauma. So she'd rather try to forget the incident and take it out of her mind. This is quite understandable and sometimes it can work. 2) Victims are ashamed; they fear the reaction of the family or close friends. They think that if their family learns of that fact, they may even end up distrusting her and her behavior. On this subject, we must educate families to face such situation, because a victim seeking understanding and affection must be supported. 3) Another problem that often arises is that the rapist may be a member of the same family or a close friend (this occurs in a high percentage of cases). It has also been found that in nearly 50% of cases, the victim knows the rapist. My advice is, even so the victim should see a specialist, police, family member or friend of extreme confidence and report the incident. In this way she can avoid future attacks. "When problems come frontally toward us, we must charge frontally against them. 4) It also happens that the victim may end up believing that she was actually the cause of the aggression, perhaps for not having tried to avoid it when she previously had glimpsed such possibility. She might be also afraid that the aggressor can do it again and cause her further damage. Even if you think so, if you don't really want that it happens again, you must be sure of your true desires and intentions; if you don't want to remain being a victim, then you must resort to methods that allow you to ultimately eradicate this major problem. 5) Also the victim is afraid of the legal procedures, which can tur n into many embarrassing and humiliating

moments for her. My dear female friend, after suffering the greatest humiliation that a woman may suffer in her life, you shouldn't be afraid to report the matter to the Court and attempt to resolve it in front of the Authorities. If all victims denounced their aggressors, this sort of events would be diminishing. Raping can happen anywhere. Almost 50% occur at home, at the home of the victim herself. The duration of a rape usually takes between 2 and 4 hours. The shortest legally so far recorded lasted 20 minutes. Other popular places are cars, parks, offices, toilets, airports and much too often in prisons. There are two key factors that impinge on kidnapping and rape as essential aspects, and these are: a) Isolation. b) Incessant period of time.

CHANGING THE RISK OF BEING A VICTIM BY TAKING AN ACTIVE PART IN MARTIAL ARTS It is clear that physical exercise can greatly improve your image. Even doctors are treating depression with exercise. Any person following a regular physical training program can clearly say that after training, usually feels much better physically and mentally. All you need is a minimum of 45-60 minutes per session, at least two or three times a week. It is believed that exercise stimulates the release of chemical substances within our body that produce a good sensation. In another term, these feelings or emotions allow the person himself acquires a greater self confidence. Strong feelings, better vibrations, and increased levels of internal security. This combination of factors is reflected in the gait of the person, his or her gestures and his or her general attitude. This will also be very important in the warning to a potential attacker, saying: "careful, do not mess with me". Recently, another study has shown that physical exercise is one of the three or four major factors that exist to extend our longevity and enjoy a healthy living, along with a balanced and good nutrition, rest and no drug use. But apart from deciding to undertake some physical activity, you should take care about knowing first the different martial systems that exist in your environment before making your final choice; this can be very helpful because although all oriental arts are good and beneficial, not all of them may be of your liking or capacity, because this will depend on many personal factors and the technical criteria of each system. In other words, every individual, man or woman, child, adult, etc., has different physical and mental qualities; on the other hand, we all have certain limitations, either naturally, by accident, injury or illness. To help you from here to form an idea of what I'm trying to express, let me outline below the main points of the different martial arts in a brief description.

Fu-Shih Kenpo MARTIAL ARTS SYSTEMS 1) JUDO: It means "Gentle Way", a method of unarmed combat. The art includes studies on the principles of balance break, movement, the using the opponent's weight and effort to execute techniques and a specific mental attitude. Developed by Grandmaster JIGORO CANO, modern Judo has 5 instruction stages. In a fighting situation, the Judoka (Judo practitioner) induces his opponent to bend forward making him lose his balance thus facilitating to throw him down to the ground. It is a hand to hand fighting method, a grappling system with imbalances and throws. It is also an Olympic sport. 2) JU JUTSU: It means "Gentle Art". Ju Jutsu is a generic term applied to many armed and unarmed Japanese fighting methods, with a great emphasis on flexibility, which characterizes by its knees techniques, immobilization techniques, throws, hitting techniques, holding and using certain weapons. Ju-Jitsu is the art in which Judo has its roots. 3) AIKIDO: It means "the Way of Unifying the Energy" or the "Way of Harmonious Spirit". It's a method of self defense without weapons,

Women and Martial Arts of a great beauty, founded in Tokyo in 1942 by Grand Master Morihei Uyeshiba. Aikido is based on the principle of harmony and no resistance to the opponent. In the practice, the Aikidoka tends to wrap his partner turning around his center, and stays in harmony with him while maintaining flexibility and stability. In Aikido the idea of destroying a person, "does not exist". Anyway, Judo, Ju Jutsu and Aikido partake of a common factor. They're all part of Oriental wrestling, in contrast with Karate, Kenpo, KungFu and Tae-Kwon-D, and other similar style, which are forms of Oriental boxing. 4) KARATE: means "Empty Hands" is a modern Japanese term that emphasizes the linear working in the arts of empty-handed hitting, kicking and performing throws and blocks from Okinawa. It uses the discharge of energy at the point of focus. 5) KUNG-FU: It's the phonetic transcription of a Chinese word meaning "perfection in everything in life", "splendor", "work skill", etc., therefore, it is a term wrongly used in the West to describe a style of Chinese martial arts. A good writer would have Kung-Fu in writing plays; a good doctor would have Kung-Fu in medicine, and so on. So when someone says he practices Kung-Fu, the next question should be: O.K., but what style of Kung-Fu? And it could be the style of the Tiger, the Crane, the Mantis, etc. The term is used in the West part of the country to describe a fighting system in China. Most

styles of Kung-Fu use a circular motion above the Japanese straight lines or straight strokes. Chinese styles develop more flexibility and speed and not so much discharge of energy. 6) TAE KWON DO: It means "hitting with fists and kicking". It is a Korean term used to represent the styles of Korea. Korean arts use straight lines, but emphasize more on using leg techniques. 7) KOSHO-RYU KENPO: Literally, "the Spiritual Path of the Old Pine", the Kosho-Ryu Kenpo is the family art of the Kosho-Mitose clan monks, and its current descendant of the 22nd generation is Grand Master THOMÁS BARRO MITOSE. Similar to the arts and styles of Karate, though earlier in time, it uses empty hand techniques as well as leg techniques. It stresses speed, continuity of chained movements, and naturalness in its responses. Finally, it combines straight lines with circular movements intertwined. 8) Kenpo-Karate, Lima Lama, Kajukenbo, Fu-Shih Kenpo, etc., are modern systems of martial arts, all of which lay emphasis on street self defense. These innovative and flexible methods of oriental martial arts, based on the principles of continuity and economy of movement, have sought the better approach and research to address current situations. They apply blocking and deviation techniques, and make use of the whole human arsenal: empty hands, forearms, elbows, knees, kicks, stomps, sweeps, lever and projection techniques, etc., with or without weapons. 9) Full-Contact, Kick-Boxing, Koshiki, Sabaki, etc., are modern systems of combat sports, very

effective indeed, both in sporting events and also applied in selfdefense. These disciplines use primarily punches, kicks, sweeps and knees, and in the case of KickBoxing and Sabaki, they accentuate the using of knees kicks and elbow strikes. The Koshiki allows the use of open hands and projections. 10th) The Krav Maga (meaning in Hebrew "hand-to-hand combat") is the official system of combat and self-defense used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli police and security services, and numerous law enforcement in the United States. Developed and refined over years of conflict, Krav Maga puts the accent on the ease in lear ning techniques that have been proven many times in real confrontations. In general, all the above systems are beautiful and effective when performed by real experts who have dedicated many years to its study, development and improvement. That is, when they have reached the Kung-Fu thereof. Again I must remind you that it's very convenient and necessary that each of you try to be acquainted with them before the final choice. Only then you will know which one suits best your own needs and characteristics. Martial arts and combat or defense sports existing today bring about huge physical, mental and spiritual benefits, reinforcing the personality, character, and overall health, and developing self-confidence, prevention and anticipation, reflexes and physical and mental balance of the practitioner. Also, in critical self defense situations, they provide the necessary knowledge to repel criminals, rapists or murderers.

“Martial arts and combat or defense sports existing today bring about huge physical, mental and spiritual benefits.”

They've been illustrating the world from these pages about ancient Samurai arts for almost ten years, and even longer with their courses, classes, books and videos. They are the heirs and guarantors of the Shizen culture tradition: a people, a custom, a school that is reemerging strongly to the astonishment of experts of the traditional Japanese martial landscape for its erudition, depth and richness. It is time to look back and resubmit this school to readers, as if we started from scratch, to resize its grandeur and reframe so many years of fruitful collaboration with this magazine. So we return to the beginning, to its presentation, but nothing is as it was then. Shidoshi Jordan Augusto Oliveira and Shidoshi Juliana Galende have won the respect of the martial community and developed a worldwide organization with branches and representatives in several continents. Nothing is casual, since the Kaze no Ryu has the broadest group of traditional Japanese teachings I've ever seen, from the mastery of countless weapons, some unique to this tradition, to the most varied bare hand fighting techniques and systems. However, the richest treasure lies perhaps on its own unique culture that includes a unique writing and a language completely different from

Japanese: Shizengo; and within this culture, shining with its own light, its personal spiritual tradition, the E-bunto "the Gr eat Str ength "(known in Japanese as "Ochikara"), a set of hermetic knowledge that have secretly survived the passage of centuries. All this makes the Kaze no Ryu school an absolutely extraordinary and exclusive experience, a living treasure of profound Japan which, almost lost in its country of origin, shines again thanks to the teachings of these great Masters from their Hombu dojo in Valencia, Spain, to illuminate the world with the wisdom, the grandeur and the strength of a people and a culture distinct and unique. For mar tial ar tists who love the Samurai combat formulas this school will be the Rosetta stone that will allow them to understand the oldest arts and styles, basis on which was built the whole Japanese martial building which has gathered so many sympathizers worldwide in our time. Those of you who still don't know them, shouldn't miss the chance to do it now, this is my sincere advice; for our friend readers, who appreciate them long ago, enjoy again the wisdom of both, as every month. BU (military, war).. GEI (art) Bu is related to the military, the martial; Gei, in turn, means art, or performance. So, Bugei is a joining of kanji, which has as an interpretation, “art or performance of war, denoting a more generic aspect, which includes and embraces the diverse specialties not only of Bujutsu but of its sub-specializations. Bujutsu, in turn, denotes the strategy or the function of these warrior arts, the way by which the practice reaches its objectives. Bugei, or Military Art, had its origin in old Japan, though it was only studied for purposes of warfare. Nowadays, its ideology is totally centered around the tradition of the art. For this reason, all the disciplines have a common relation: the search for reality and efficiency, an essential factor for the training of a warrior. It was in the Tokugawa Era (also known as the Edo Period, 1603 to 1868 AD) when the military culture reached its historic and technical height. The population was divided into four social classes: samurais, farm workers, craftsmen, and traders. The samurais were the dominant class. They held absolute power over the people and their lands, having the sword and their family name as their symbol. They possessed an honor code denominated Bushido. Approximately nine centuries of expression of military power in Japan shows that the nation was imbued with ideals and ethics particular to those warriors, with an impressive sense of mission. Those elements, which drove the bushi to act in important scenarios of Japanese history, were strongly surrounded by a firm belief in the divine origin of Japan, with a determination that would confirm the belief in the power of weapons, even though it implied death. The code of behavior demanded an

unquestionable obedience to the mandates of one’s immediate superior, to whom was attributed a link with the divine past. Bugei was taught in the military schools—Bujutsu Ryu—that were so widespread throughout Japan that it is impossible to know the exact number of them. Yorike Mizuguchi, who would later change his name to Manabo Ogawa, was the ancestor of the whole genealogical tree of the Ogawa family. Yorike was a priest and believed in the messages from the gods as the initial way of elevation. After that, Manabo was recognized by the priests as the direct Kokeisha (successor) of the traditional lineage of the Kawa village. It is thought that the adopted name—Ogawa—is very likely a homage to his re-birth in the waters of the “little river” that ran through the village. The Kaze in the Bugei Ryu came to Brazil through the Ogawa family, which disembarked at the Santos port at an undetermined date and which has as its reference the year 1935, being established in the state of Parana in the south of Brazil. Shidishi Jordan Augusto initiated his trajectory in Bugei through Kazuo Ogawa and Kibashi Hirayama. Later on, under the guidance of Roberto Kunio Araki, he received the grade of Shidishi from the hands of Ogawa Hiroshi, and along with it, the permission to teach the tradition of the lineage. There are indications from history referring to the development of the techniques by Ogawa Hiroshi himself. So, they say that until the decade of the 70s, in Brazil our lineage was also called Ogawa Ryu, since much was developed by way of efficiency thanks to our soke. It is possible, therefore, to see difference in what concerns Kakuto in Bujutsu (real way of war) when compared to the Kaze in the Ryu from Brazil and other countries. Within the study of Bugei from the Ogawa lineage are the arts of Kobujutsu and Taijutsu.

Literally translated as “old art of war” (ko – old; bu – war; jutsu – art), this word has been very much utilized as a reference to the practice with weapons. In fact, through the years, there has been great confusion about the Martial Arts. It is common that the Japanese arts use expressions in accord with the native language. That being so, it is logical that many terms will be similar. Certain classic styles of Jujutsu, for example, commonly denominate the practice with weapons as Kobujutsu, but not including the practice of specific old weapons like Sai, Tonfa, Kama, etc. In this way, it is correct to affirm that in these cases, the term Kobujutsu is utilized to refer to practices with classic weapons, such as the Jo, Bokuto, Tanto, etc., only being employed as “old art of war”. There are many arts practiced in the Ogawa Ryu, among them are, Kenjutsu, Iaijutsu, Battojuts, Jujutsu, Bojutsu, Tanbojutsu, Tantojutsu, Yarijutsu (Sojutsu), Naginatajutsu, Saijutsu, Kamjutsu, KusariFundo, Nawa no Gikko, and Kyujutsu. Tai Jutsu is a Japanese term that means corporal Martial Arts, corporal art. Tai means body and jutsu, art. Despite being quite an indeterminate word, Tai Jutsu is a very old way of fighting, which endeavored to perfect and prepare students for all kinds of situations in which they did not have weapons or any other kind of protection except their own body. With this intention, the art took very wide dimensions due to the infinite situations that might arise in corporal fighting. So, as many weapons have been developed to offer advantages in combat and through time and from the diverse cultures one can find an immense variety with very different ends, the human body has also improved in its use of structural

components, the head, trunk and limbs, with attack and defensive aims. In Japan, just as in other warrior countries, unarmed combat techniques became so effective that they went on to be studied and applied against any kind of adversary whether armed or not. The study of angles, traction, impact and bars that could be done with the body and the damage that they could bring about in certain areas, have been exhaustively studied to the point where the unarmed arts could achieve the same advantages with an adversary with the most dangerous of weapons. It is possible to find, for example, the unarmed technical applications against an adversary with knife (Tanto Dori) or with sword (Shinken Shiraha Dori). Tai Jutsu is basically divided into three arts of body contact. The part that studies the way of grabbing (immobilizations and chokes) is Jujutsu – a very old art that descends from Kumi-Uchi (Yoroi Kumi-Uchi in the case of using armor), a way of fighting that sought to take the adversaries to the ground, very effective for the development of the mind-body connection. Still within Jujutsu, for its immense number of techniques and immobilizations, one studies, with quite a lot of emphasis, fighting with the feet, but with a connotation closer to gripping. Another part of Tai Jutsu is Kenpo, an art that deals with aggression and bodily strength. The philosophy of Kenpo is to look for the naturalness of the body in union with its aggression. This violent way of corporal fighting was developed with warfare objectives. And to complete Tai Jutsu, we have Aiki Ju Jutsu, a very old fighting technique based on harmony and on the use of internal energy, known as Ki. Nonetheless, some characteristic sequences are utilized within those of Jujutsu and Aiki Jujutsu as forms of Seiteigata. That art is

known as Koppojutsu and emphasizes attacking the bones. Another factor that makes Tai Jutsu extremely effective is the use of bars and angles of locks, fractures, and twisting of joints, known as Kansetsu no Gikku. There are many historic explanations about why there are so many techniques dedicated to the joints. The most common version refers to the origin of armor, which was made to be flexible and therefore left only the joints accessible as targets of attack.

MAKIMONO, TRADITIONAL DOCUMENTS If we analyze the composition of a paper well, no matter how good the text is, it will never truly express programmatic content existent in the knowledge of a professional. For the most traditional Bugei masters, what is written down on paper and in documents might not be as significant as the analysis of techniques and their executions. Even so, it is the best reference or legacy of a master to a student in so far as the tradition of his thoughts and his origin go. In the old days, the values of a training period in Koryu were placed in documents that had the name of Kaiden so that related nomenclatures were spread to Menkyo Kaiden, Densho, Kaidenshom, Makimono, Ryusho, and others. Though there are studies that investigate the differences among each one of them and their respective applications, with the legacy of Gendai Budo, a great doubt arose concerning the grades and titles that were attributed. With the rise of the modern arts, which utilize the Dan Kyu grade system, the information from the past has remained somewhat adrift and suffocated by the rise of the new arts. The Kaiden system is known in the West as a “license to transmit certain knowledge. In the most traditional schools, apart

from Kaiden, there is the Makimono, a document that contains the necessary specifications of each Ryu and the specifications of its genealogy. For decades, there were many specifications in these documents. Their contents were valued by way of the continuity and direction of a certain Ryu—flow; current; nagare, which refers to the lineage—which, in the consistency of the facts, determined the real heirs and holders of the knowledge of that school. Ishino Shihan presented the translation of the documents that represent the Brazilian Bugei Society and that holds Shidoshi Jordan Augusto as Daihyosha, or representative, of the Ogawa techniques in Koryu Seiteigata (established forms in a specific order). Shidoshi Jordan Augusto, referring to the makimono, affirmed in an interview: “Any and all documents must be seen as a reminder that you make up or have made up part of something important, something that was good for you. Nothing more.” And he goes further: “The document doesn’t make you special in anything, quite the opposite; all that is symbol becomes a target. As for that fact that many support themselves in the documents to conquer a space they think they need, we have to remember that we are all, at some point in our interior, fragile and small. The illusionary world is there and we all participate in it. Respect must come from the inside out, not from the outside in.”

Tai Chi

The straight sword in the Tai Chi Chuan style

Great Masters “The straight sword, for its versatility, is also very useful for other external styles of Kung Fu, such as Hung Gar, Choy Lee Fut, Tsui Pa Hisien, Bak Hoi Pai, Shaolin Chuan and others.

Speaking about Tai Chi, I have often found that people are somewhat astonishment to hear about weapons like the staff, the spear, the halberd, and the fan. For many, it is dif ficult to associate these weapons with present-day Tai Chi Chuan. On my long road of study and practice of the interior styles of Kung Fu, I have always found instruments that complete the empty hands exercise. Tai Chi has also contributed to enriching my experience in traditional weapons and thr ough this method I have discovered a vast and attractive world. Now I feel it is my duty to transmit these treasures of the art, a part of the art that is almost unknown n o w, e v e n f o r t h e m o s t impassioned practitioners of this style. I n m y s c h o o l , t h e Ta i C h i weapons programs involve, after the study of the straight sword, the sable, the long staff, the spear, and the fan.

A

4,000 year history speaks of the vast field of traditional Chinese weapons, which developed at the same time as the history of empty hands Kung Fu. It is probable that in ancient times, the use of rudimentary weapons acted as the forerunner for the arm and leg fighting techniques and sword techniques. In the old, classic Chinese novels, we often find episodes of combat and almost always we find reference to weapons. MO HAY, or PIN HEI, represents the wide field of traditional Chinese weapons, which can be sub-divided into two categories defined as YIN weapons and YANG weapons. To PIN HEI YIN belongs the group of weapons that were originally designed for other objectives. Peasants and fisherman especially, but also

frequently monks and hermits, adapted their utensils or work tools as occasional weapons to defend themselves in various situations: sticks, rakes, hatchets, oars, rope, poles divided into two or more sections for beating rice, and others like stools, pipes, chains, fans, crutches, whips, etc. In time, thanks to the work of many masters, the use of these tools with martial objectives was developed and perfected to ever greater extents. To PIN HEI YANG belongs the group of weapons that were designed as weapons. They are considered the Weapons of the Warrior. In the old days, only the dominant class, the aristocrats, the soldiers, and the police could carry real weapons, while they were strictly forbidden for the general population. Among them we find all the various kinds of swords, halberds, spears, knives, and many more. The various styles of Kung Fu, in their evolution, incorporated the use of one or more weapons in their programs, creating new technical possibilities, new applications, and new symbolism. The handling of a specific weapon in a style is, in the majority of cases, initially born for uses that are primarily martial. Where the empty hand technique doesn’t reach or is too ineffective, a skillfully handled weapon can appear.

Tai Chi The use of a weapon offers the practitioner skills that are unattainable in any other way. The technical level of the practitioner improves by way of physical power, coordination, precision, awareness of trajectory, and the awareness of one’s own energy. In the Tai Chi Chuan style as well, the use of the weapon is born with this objective. Being an extremely refined style, the weapons that complete and represent it are refined. Therefore, noble weapons appear in the form and the movement: the straight sword, the sable, the staff, the spear, and the fan are the most important. In past times, no aristocrat or nobleman could have fought only with punches and kicks. Through time some of these weapons have been forgotten and are unknown to the present day Tai Chi practitioners. That is because the modern technical programs have accustomed themselves to the great transformation that the Tai Chi style has suffered in the past century, losing a great part of its martial aspect, transforming it into a soft and simple exercise.

“Through time some of these weapons have been forgotten and are unknown to the present day Tai Chi practitioners.”

Great Masters

We mustn’t forget that the history of this method involves various centuries with purely martial intentions, with its heroes and champions who have been referred to as “invincible masters”. Nowadays, the straight sword and the sable are the two weapons most often used by the majority of the Tai Chi practitioners. But unfortunately, as had already happened with the empty hands technique, these instruments also suffered mistaken interpretation that spoils the sense of their application and their historical meaning. The straight sword, for its versatility, is also very useful for other external styles of Kung Fu, such as Hung Gar, Choy Lee Fut, Tsui Pa Hisien, Bak Hoi Pai, Shaolin Chuan and others. The “Nei Chia” internal styles like Tai Chi Chuan, Pa Kua, Hisin I, Li Ho, Wu Tang and others, utilize the straight sword in order to be able to interpret their principles and technical characteristics. In the VIII century, during the Tang dynasty, certain personalities were found

Tai Chi who were very skilled in the handling of this weapon, such as the famous poet Li Po. During the more recent Ming dynasty, especially in the area where the famous Wu Tang Shan mountains are found, many styles of Kung Fu were born and developed, and in particular, the straight sword found here many practitioners who were feared and respected for their skills. Some swordsmen from that epoch became legends, among them: Wang Chen Ming, Wang Tzun Jeh, Il Mo Lan (the famous one-armed swordsman), and others. This weapon is also frequently represented in mythological figures. An important personality is Lu Tung Pin, one of the Eight Immortals who always carries the double-edged straight sword with him. In the paintings that represent the mythical hero “Kwan Kun”, sanctified by the people, with his inseparable halberd, he is often accompanied by his son “Kwan Pin” armed with a straight sword. The origin of the straight sword seems to go back to the period of the SHANG dynasty, between the first and the second millennium BC. Since then, this weapon has always been considered noble and therefore the privilege of the dominant class: the officers used the straight sword denominated JEN, while the common soldiers used a sable called DAN DAO. The gentlemen, and sometimes also the women of a certain social class, didn’t look down on the employment of that weapon. In the old days, the aristocrats had swords forged with beautiful bands and very frequently they were enriched with precious stones (jade was often used). One could find symbols etched into the blades, handles, or sheaths (dragons, phoenixes, lions, etc.) as well as

legendary figures; one could also find war scenes or simply the name of the swordsman or the name of the school to which he belonged. The image and symmetrical shape— straight, pointed, elegant, and at the same time martial—symbolically represent how the will and spirit of the practitioner should be. The weapon is made up of a handle that can be used with one or two hands, with the end part generally reinforced in order to be used in combat. Another feature is the “elsa”, the hand protection that generally ends with two points turned over the side of the blade. The blade, quite subtle and symmetrical, is double-edged and pointed. Often, at the end of the handle an end piece is found that underlies and accompanies the movements. This piece, nowadays utilized for embellishment, reminds one of what used to be used to dazzle the adversary during combat. The sheath, replete with decorations or inlays, is used as much for striking as for blocking. The double edge of the blade allows for many uses: cracking, hatchet strikes, and circular attacks; while the pointed end

“La vaina, valorizada con decoraciones o taraceas, se utiliza tanto para golpear como para parar.

Tai Chi makes direct attacks and thrusts from the long distance particularly effective. In the Tai Chi Chuan style, the weapon is normally held in the right hand. However, in the rest position, it is held in the left hand, in reverse fashion, with the thumb and index finger facing downward and the other three fingers bent around the handle. The blade is held vertically along the outside of the arm, reaching the level of the shoulder and coming to the height of the ear. We have to consider that depending on the master and the school, the dimensions of the sword can vary. For example, we find some Jen only 70 cm long and others that reach one meter and a half. However, the most commonly utilized length is around one meter. The flexibility or rigidity of the blade depends on the metal used. Today the tendency is to use mixed alloys that stand out for their lightness and flexibility, but often make the movement less precise and efficient. The hand that doesn’t hold the weapon takes on a particular position called Hui Ming Shou, or Hisien Ching Lu: “The hand that indicates the way” or “The hand of the immortal”. The index and middle fingers are straight in line with the back of the hand, the other two fingers are bent and the thumb closes them on the palm. The Hui Ming Shou posture accompanies all the sword techniques: the two tense fingers indicate and direct the movements of the weapon, channeling the flow of energy. The Chi flows into the fingers (channels of two important meridians

Great Masters “Very frequently in the Martial Arts one compares the use of the sword with the use of the paint brush.

in traditional Chinese medicine) and brings energy to the blade or the wrist that sustains it. Sometimes the Hui Ming Shou gathers energy from the outside in order to transmit it directly to the weapon, using the arms and the body as a bridge. In that way the Hui Ming Shou becomes a kind of virtual sword that accompanies and consolidates the material sword (It is said that Hui Ming Shou hides the secret and the spirit of this sword!). Another characteristic is the universal nature of the symbolism, in fact, one can find images sacred to many religions and cultures. Very frequently in the Martial Arts one compares the use of the sword with the use of the paint brush. A painter who observes the handling of the sword can find his habitual gestures with the paint brush. Sword and paint brush move in the air and over canvas. Circular movements enclose and create space and call up energy‌ Direct movements concentrate attention, focus the energy and, with action, revitalize the Yang. Utilized in the Tai Chi Chuan style, the straight sword expresses all its elegance: movements that are at times slow and harmonious, at times fast and fluid, giving rhythm to the form. The alternation of circular and straight trajectories, along with the classic movement of the charge and discharge of weight, typical of Tai Chi, always remind us of the union of the two fundamental principles: Yin and Yang, which through their transformations, regulate all the vital processes.

Thailand, Chiang Mai. January 22, 2015 Interview: Shifu Bruno Tombolato. shaolinspain.com Translation: Sophia Wang

A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Shi de Yang. He was the father of a glorious generation that reopened the Shaolin tradition to the world in a time of renewal that gave him a fair role for which he certainly had been well trained. A difficult task, full of hidden shadows and troubles, no doubt, but Yang is a warrior monk, a real Chan (Zen) man and, despite all these apparent worldly compliments, fame and popularity, his difficulties with the Establishment, persecution and injustice of any kind, his tongue has never given voice to a single word of complaint. In fact, all infor mation that has reached me in this regard has never come directly from him. With an extraor dinar y elegance that disr egar ds ever ything, he shows himself deeply committed on his own journey, on his idea of a l e g a c y, on an improvement Way, on the certainty of loving what he has received above any o t h e r consideration. The eternal spirit of Shaolin

Great Masters I've met, the man I've learned to estimate, is simple, insightful and extremely sensitive, but he has an inner fierceness springing unexpectedly from his eyes, only for those who can perceive. But when he feels really at ease, he transfers more the sense of being child who is playing with you, a child that you want to protect and embrace. He's full of life and energy and a mixture of candor with inner firmness that makes him so different and special. Over the years, the sympathy that arose between us turned into friendship. However, it was something that sprang out spontaneously from the first moment, as possessed by something imperishable and timeless. It is not the first time that someone has handed us the phone simply to hear each other voice, in an absurd and loving repeating of our names (he speaks in Chinese and I don't). Beyond the anecdote with this magazine editor, Shi de Yang has a deep knowledge of Shaolin Kung Fu and he is considered the greatest authority on the subject. Despite his slight build, when it comes to show his Kung Fu, it always surprises you his strength, flexibility and firmness.

Great Masters Nevertheless, not being in favor of such demonstrations, it's been years that De Yang promotes himself as a Spiritual Master rather than a Martial Master, although in his case, it will never be a complete divorce, because Shaolin Kung Fu is deeply steeped in his religiosity and vice versa, at least in the personal perception that stems from him. Today we bring in cover an exceptional interview with him, because a whole new generation of readers should know him, and in doing so, like so many of us, they will learn to love him. Alfredo Tucci

Great Masters Interview with Grand Master Shi De Yang rand Master Shi De Yang hails from a town called Taikang, out in the Henan Province, China, just a few hours’ drive from the Shaolin Temple. His whole family lives there and he visits them often. As he told us, his passion for Martial Arts began from a very young age, but it was not until his teens that he decided voluntarily travel to the sacred lands of Shaolin Temple. It was there, in the same temple, where he met his Master Shi Su Xi, one of the few surviving monks to the Cultural Revolution, to whom he accompanied him until his last days. Shi Su Xi was one of the most respected Shaolin monks, and the master of most of the monks of the "de" and "xing" generation of the Shaolin Temple. He spent over 70 years devoted to the protection and propagation of the Shaolin tradition.

Great Masters Shi De Yang in turn is a monk of the 31st generation Shaolin and today is one of the leading exponents of traditional Shaolin culture worldwide. He belongs to the southern gate of the Shaolin Monastery or Nanyuan, one of the two branches that have survived through the years. Master Shi De Yang has traveled half the world teaching Shaolin Kung Fu to countless people from different cultures

and nationalities. Italy, England, Hungary, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, Canada, and Spain are among the many countries he has visited, thus becoming the epitome of Shaolin culture worldwide. The Master De Yang is an expert in Traditional Shaolin Kung Fu, and this knowledge has catapulted him to the top of the most famous and respected masters in China and the world. He has

specialized in Da Hong Quan, Xiao Hong Quan, Luo Han Quan, Shaolin Gun and Shaolin Jian, among other styles of Shaolin Boxing. The Interview First of all, thank you for the interview; we know you are always very busy. You've been traveling outside of China and spreading the Shaolin culture for a long time. In which year did you begin to travel and why? A pleasure and thanks for the interview. I remember I started to travel abroad in 1993. I first traveled to Italy, then I returned to China to go to Xiamen and later I went to the island of Taiwan. The biggest impression of all was that in only a month I traveled by car, train, boat and plane; It was a very fun experience.

Great Masters Alfredo Tucci: How many countries have you visited so far? Maestro Shi De Yang: I must confess that I don't keep an exact record. Since 1993, except for two years in between in which I didn't traveled abroad, every year I have received invitations from different countries, minimum one and maximum six or seven in the same trip. On many occasions, the countries I visit are different and I usually make two or three journeys a year. A.T.: Knowing different cultures certainly will have enriched you on many levels. What have such experiences represented to you? M.S.D.C.: I haven't drawn conclusions from my travels, because every culture has its own splendor and every story its own beauty. But my experience tells me that there is a need to improve communication in this world so that we can learn from each other and give way to a more integrated society. A.T.: How do you see the growing demand for Shaolin Kung fu in the world? M.S.D.C.: In recent years we have witnessed a growing demand Shaolin Gongfu (少林 功夫). I think it needs no more explanations: everyone wants a healthy body and, at the same time, achieve spiritual satisfaction. It's like

The eternal spirit of Shaolin

Shaolin “Shi De Yang currently conducts his Wuseng Houbeidui School located in Deng Feng, in the province of Henan, just two kilometers from the Shaolin Temple.

Great Masters enjoying a meal, Shaolin Gongfu is the gourmet dish for our spirit, so more and more people want to know it and fall in love with it. A.T.: Why do you think this happens? M.S.D.C.: In relation to the previous question I think it corroborates it. It is a phenomenon which shows that Shaolin Gongfu is a treasure. There is a Chinese proverb that states: if it's gold, it shines anywhere (zhen jin fang zai na li dou hui fang guang - 真金放在哪里都会放光的). First, Shaolin Gongfu practice increases positive energy (zheng neng liang正能量); however, if not practiced in the right way it can harm both our body and our mind

The eternal spirit of Shaolin

Shaolin (spirit, xin ling 心灵). It's necessary that the advantages of Shaolin Gongfu be known so that more people want to practice. A.T.: Chan is a very powerful tool for today, but many people in the West don't have a clear idea of what it is, and they ignore the way to practice or how to approach it. Any advice? M.S.D.C.: Chan (禅) is to be found in our day to day. Besides, we all know that is a very powerful tool, so why not seek it in our daily lives? We say that walking, sitting, lying down, eating, dressing, harvesting, working, learning, etc. everything is Chan. If it is perceived with kindness, Chan first increases spiritual discipline. Second, it provides values to society. To this it must be added the sitting meditation, the combination of movement and rest will increase the perception speed of Chan. A.T.: In other interviews, we remember you said that normally, in the Shaolin Temple, monks have different tasks, so they have little spare time to practice Kung Fu. At what time of the day do they usually train? Or is there a special group to practice Kung Fu? M.S.D.C.: Shaolin Gongfu is training and therefore incoming monks need a tutor, Shifu (师父), to guide them. Evidently, they should perform the basic maintenance of the temple. On the other hand, for the monks of more advanced age, in addition to studies of Buddhism and the working of Chan, Gong Fu training aims to improve the practice of Chan. A.T.: If someone is interested in the Shaolin culture, where should he start? Which would be the steps he should follow? M.S.D.C.: Martial Arts fans who just have met Shaolin Gongfu must start with the basics: kicking - ti tui (踢腿), stretching - ya tui (压腿), ba jing (拔 筋). It's essential to follow the instructions and guidelines set by the Shifu.

“Master Shi De Yang has traveled half the world teaching Shaolin Kung Fu to countless people from different cultures and nationalities.”

“Shi De Yang in turn is a monk of the 31st generation Shaolin and today is one of the leading exponents of traditional.”

A.T.: Many practitioners of traditional Shaolin Kung Fu wonder about the proper way to practice. Could you give us some advice? M.S.D.C.: There's no particular method for the practice of traditional Shaolin Gongfu; simply eliminating irritable mood and thoughts of becoming famous overnight. We must keep our feet on the ground, so that each step we take is on firm land without losing balance, and this is achieved through sweat and sacrifice. A.T.: We have seen you in several demonstrations execute the form Da Hong Quan and we know it's your favorite: Could you tell us briefly about its origin and features? M.S.D.C.: Sure, Da Hong Quan (大 洪拳), like other forms, has many versions. To further understand this, we could compare it to a language class; each student can have his or her own interpretation of the teacher's explanations. Da Hong Quan is an explosive and quick form, but fluid as the flow of a river. It has a very steady rhythm, with strong but harmonic ups and downs. All this is the result of perseverance: an intense workout is the basis of Shaolin Gongfu. A.T.: Do you think that the techniques appearing in the forms could be applied in a real fight? M.S.D.C.: A Wushu form resembles a pearl necklace, where movements are the pearls linked by a thread: there are intertwined combat

Great Masters techniques, transition and defense movements. Nonetheless, Shaolin Gongfu gives priority to learning those movements of defense. A.T.: We have recently seen a DVD showing the form of Qi Xing Quan, and it looks very different from what is commonly practiced. What's the difference? M.S.D.C.: In society, many martial artists filmed tutorials of Qi Xing Quan ( 七星 拳) and that's why it also has many versions. The one we have recorded now is the form inherited from the Shaolin Temple. The Shaolin Taolu (套路 ) are not very different, they simply differ in some positions and movements. A.T.: What other DVDs have you recorded in the last years?

M.S.D.C.: The latest tutorials include traditional Shaolin forms of Duilian (对 练) and stick (棍术). One of them is the outcome of my own experience and training. I hope you like it. A.T.: We know that you have recently visited Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and Ecuador and have opened there an association for the spreading of the Shaolin culture. Please, tell us what this is about and what most caught your attention in these countries. M.S.D.C.: Yes, as you've said, I've been visiting

four countries in South America for a month. From this experience I keep the best memories, which can only be obtained when you live it personally. I remember a boy in Bolivia with two years and three months of age who besides being able to pronounce in Chinese, he showed great discipline in training. It was a pleasure to see the way he was slowly learning. In the village of "life is beautiful" in Ecuador, the boss was already 60 years old, but his practice of Chan surprised all of us who were present. Again, I have learned a lot from my trips. A.T.: What are your plans for this year 2015?

M.S.D.C.: Host countries will be responsible for the planning of 2015, so all those who want to make contact with me can look up at my itinerary online. It is an honor for me to receive invitations from different countries to meet and train with all lovers of the Shaolin culture, is also a pleasure to do so. A.T.: Any message for the readers? M.S.D.C.: I wish all my friends success in their Shaolin Gongfu training. Increase your discipline in Martial Arts and carry this positive energy to all those around you to create harmony in the world. Amituofo

In the ancient Bubishi there are two hand to hand combative methods prominently discussed and depicted, they are the Tiger method of Body Change and the Crane method of Body Change. These two methods (purposefully not referred to as styles), have within them the "Body Change" dynamics that yield certain physical skills and mental acuity as they develop a specialized spirit or tactical approach. This occurs with actual changes in the Neuro Functionality of the body as well as the mental accesses / cross neural programming These are deeper physiological changes, not the more rudimentary Iron Shirt or body strengthening changes (yes these are a part of the overall Body Change concept within, but again the base levels and not the full change potential).

Tiger Trump Trumps what? Another more advanced but typical and rudimentary Body Change that occurs in training either of these methods, is in the automatic functional responses of the practitioner on a structural basis. This is where the muscles get stronger and faster, as well as developing new neural pathways to increase a more automatic or reflexive response without conscious thought, but again this is done in all Martial Arts and not the deeper physiological changes that these special methods create. These are referred to as "methods" (not a style) as they were ways and approaches to training, not merely a physical form of compiled techniques, but rather a way to completely rewire and change the entire body. They are also methods of utilizing the vital points of the opponent with far greater results based on neurofunctionality and physiology. As such, each uses a separate approach; the Crane enacts the practitioners own Body Change capability and the Tiger Enacts the Body Change upon the opposition. So it would appear at first glance that they are equal, just different in their approach... but there is an important distinction... the Tiger actually enacts both! Now that in itself would not make one necessarily better than the other...

that is totally in the hands of the practitioner and how they develop within each method or in their ability to correctly deploy it. However the greater possibility, probability and capability all lay within the domain (or claws if you will), of the Tiger. To Be Able To enhance your own functionality and potential as you weaken the opponent, is a distinct advantage... we are not just talking about hitting a weaker target on the opponent, but fundamentally weakening his physiological structure to make that and all targets substantially weaker. In the past expositions on Kyusho we have discussed how the balance of the individual can create weakness or strength in the body or its ability to withstand strikes. This is valid still and utilized in both methods of Tiger and Crane, but these physiological changes are even deeper. This is why these two methods have been revered above all others for centuries; it is our modern addiction and dependence upon machines, chemicals and measurements that has obscured this knowledge from us for so long.

So which would win in a fight? Again that would depend on the practitioners skills acquired in each method, but think of this:

In our modern time we have seen the advent of MMA, where originally many fighters of various disciplines came together to compete using those methods. What we bore witness to was a great wake up call to most Martial Artists, and that was if the Tiger (Grappler) got past the Crane (Striker), there was little chance of victory for the Crane. What was also evident was that until people started cross training, the striker was virtually lost when the grappler got past the strikes, but the grappler could easily enact both methodologies from either range. Now the above observation is not the basis of the Kyusho information on Body Change being related to you within this posting... but it does help to delineate and explain the ideology behind it. These are both high skills to be sure, but completely forgotten to time. We have found this information however deeply buried in several old texts and scrolls requiring over 10 years of deciphering, research, cross research with medical and scientific apparatus and knowledge and yes more field testing. This has and will have profound implications in the Martial Arts (especially Karate Kata) as well as all professional and amateur sports, their coaches and trainers and the holistic health practitioners around the world. So when we look at the Bubishi, we must understand that man had a more

intense and natural understanding of the human condition based on experience and observation. In modern times we developed such sophisticated mechanical devices to look inside, but we lost our human connection via conjecture based on made machines and chemicals. When you get back to the natural law of experience and observation the information of that day and age begin to reveal themselves. They did nt try to re-think the human, test it with man-made devices, they listened, recorded and refined via the natural route... so too must we if we are to really understand the deeper ramifications in these type documents and the Martial Arts themselves.

Other Applications? To understand this concept a bit more, let's look at professional sports (any of them), from Football (US) to Soccer, to track, Boxing, Hockey, Race Car driving, Swimming, Gymnastics.... and all the rest, there are great

“So when we look at the Bubishi, we must understand that man had a more intense and natural understanding of the human condition based on experience and observation

athletes and then there are the elite athletes. The Elite possess this incredible attribute naturally and why they are faster, stronger, more agile, etc... but beyond that they have unlocked the full human potential! Their sport oozes out of every pore and they move as no other in that sport... this is natural talent... but again it can be learned and taught as it is all neural reprogramming and we have uncovered it's essence and how to manipulate certain aspects. For the Martial Artist this can be incorporated into their forms, techniques, warmups, even fighting where it should always lead to, and join that with enhanced targeting abilities (yes to Kyusho Targets... those weaker anatomical structures that keep the body functioning and even standing or conscious) from increased speed and dexterity and it is the ultimate package. This information is something that affects the performance of the human body, as well as ways to correct the malfunctions that occur during our lives. If we can help you enhance your physical actions and physiological functionality, this will increase the health and longevity of the practitioner as well.

If you can effectively Body Change (as with the Crane Skills) for greater Neurological Potency and Ability, you will command greater effect on an opponent; this is a valuable and fantastic skill above and beyond the typical Martial Art. However if you can do that along with enacting a Body Change (as with Tiger Skills) for greater Neurological weakness in the opponent as you gain a greater Neurological ability in yourself... well that Trumps all.

Silat

PUKULAN (“STRIKING) IN SILAT In my last article, I gave an overview of the entire Satria Fighting Arts Pencak Silat syllabus so that you would better understand the whole. In this article, we are going to cover the fundamental principles of striking, a hugely important part of all Silat and south-east Asian fighting arts. 'Pukulan' is a word that means 'striking', and the first aspect of all striking, is to clarify which parts of the body are to be used. All traditional Silat systems are Pukulan-based, but not all use the same parts of the body. South-east Asians are, by and large, not as tall or as heavy as westerners. So they naturally rely on their striking to be quick, accurate, crucial timing as well as using correct and effective parts of the physical anatomy.

Silat

Correct use of Physical Anatomy You have all heard the saying “hard and soft “ in the martial arts? Well, in the SFA, we use 'male' and 'female'. The male aspects of the body represent the hard parts, while the soft parts of the body are female. Both have to work together to ensure that one is both projective yet sensitive, closed yet open, hard yet soft. The hard parts of the body are considered the forehead, elbows, knuckles, knees, shins, heel, palm of the hand and balls of the feet. As my teacher, Guru Ma, used to say, “no need to get harder, you are already both hard and soft. You only have to learn how to use the hard and soft intelligently.” In one system I learnt in Java, in a small village

called Ciawi, just outside of Jakarta, they would apply an oil called “Balur”, a specific oil applied to the parts of the body to be used for striking, and the oil helps to condition that particular area. In other parts of south-east Asia, they kick and strike banana trees to get the same conditioning effect or even role bamboo sticks on their shins, all purposeful in order to increase the hardness of that particular bone being used. Personally, I prefer hitting with the focus on speed, with precise timing in the right area for striking. But, each to their own method.

Correct use of Angles When we chop trees downs, we normally cut them down between a 45 and 65 degree angles. This is to ensure effectiveness out of the job. This is exactly the same principle when we are hitting and striking at the anatomy. The direction and angles you strike in will, for sure, determine

the damage you inflict, as well as determine how they fall as well as their reaction!! Using angle that are difficult to determine, will become an element of surprise, which is one of the big keys in knocking someone down.

Correct areas to hit in the body Every part of the body has it its pro's and con's when hitting. For example, an elbow strike to the head will cause the soft tissues of the brain to bounce around the bony wall, causing trauma and confusion. But as it is also the hardest part of the body protecting the brain, so

hitting a particular soft area in the head with your knuckles will cause more damage. A hit to the temple area disturbs your equilibrium but at the same time you may miss the area as it is not particularly the biggest. The same applies with the neck, having huge benefits but easy to avoid. Every part has its good and bad points, which is why in most Silat systems, they learn to break the body down into the twelve most vulnerable parts: head, eyes, throat, nose, ribs, solar plexus, bladder, groin, outside of the thigh and side of the knee.

Timing and Accuracy A good fighter can win by throwing fewer strikes with less effort simply by executing the strike with perfect timing and accuracy. In addition, having the understanding of hitting and moving goes a long way. Very much like when Bruce said in Enter the Dragon “boards don't hit back - a force that is coming on to you is very different than a force moving back or slipping to the side. Think of a moving tennis ball that is hit at the right time and in the right area. It will return much quicker. The same principle applies when hitting someone. That is why sometimes, fighters have gone down by what appears to be of little force, but carefully observed however, and you will notice that it's perfect timing and accuracy being executed. My recently released instructional DVD 'Sembah Pukulan' (also available for online streaming via VOD) is the follow up to 'Practising the Sembah' and I go through various techniques and applications for striking.

WHERE TO LEARN THE SATRIA FIGHTING ARTS I have various Instructors all over who are certified to teach the SFA. My website lists all of them. I hold Instructor courses in the UK, Spain, Italy and an annual one in Holland. I have also just started ONLINE TUITION for those who want to learn the art for personal reasons only, as well as those who want to perhaps make a career and become a Satria Arts Instructor (SFA and Satria Yoga) one day. All information is on our website (www.satria-arts.com) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/satriafightingarts) In my next article I will cover the methods of achieving these key principles. Until then, enjoy your training and be creative!

HIDDEN WEAPONS

In Europe, 38% of the cases in which agents are injured with a weapon have taken place in scenarios where the delinquent has hidden what he was carrying or has utilized a camouflaged weapon. Hidden arms are a problem that require a specific and preventative defense tactic, a very serious matter to keep in mind when it comes to preparing oneself to survive in the streets. The laws restricting the carrying of bladed weapons have only accentuated the ingenuity of the criminals. For example: a knife in the shape of a little claw that is easily hidden has become a nightmare for the doormen at discos in Madrid. Foreign individuals of low stature and weak constitution solve fights with big and strong types in seconds with a simple, quick cut to the inside of the thigh... a person can bleed to death in minutes. Hung from the neck, in cell phones, lighters... an unlimited number of ways that require the attention of a expert like Thierry Delhief, who has developed effective tactical formulas in his latest video project.

hierry Delhief teaches the handling of defense batons (tonfa and telescopic baton) and professional self-defense to professionals from all areas of security (public and private). At the same time, he gives self-defense classes for the general public. Having both operational and sportive experience, in 1997 he created the Federation of Defense Baton Training and Self-defense (F.F.B.D.). Thierry presents us with his training organization and the basic concepts of his method: “I have surrounded myself with experienced friends and collaborators from numerous sectors (judicial, the media, material, sportive...) in order to elaborate a realistic self-defense method that is efficient and easy to assimilate. In fact, the F.F.B.D. Self-defense method has a favorable group of people, as much among the professionals as among

the private sector, and this for various reasons. First, because tactics occupy a common place in our teaching. The professional intervention techniques are studied and applied in concrete scenes and scenarios. It is not only a question of learning some technical gestures separately, they must be integrated in coordinated strategic intervention considering

colleagues, the surroundings, and the people implicated in the intervention (delinquent, passers-by, witnesses...). Later, our teaching is inscribed in the framework of strict respect of legitimate defense and of the legislation concerning weapons. This aspect of our classes makes our students, professionals or not, people respectful of the law and capable of adapting their defense to the damage that is caused. On the other hand, our method is versatile. In effect, we teach our students that the empty-hand techniques are the same as the techniques with tonfa or with the telescopic baton. This allows them to perfectly understand that the “body shape” is unique and in this way to automate the defensive reflexes, whatever the situation might be. In my opinion, the most important point continues to be the fact that we transmit a realistic message: it isn’t about

creating superheroes. One of the important concepts of F.F.B.D. Self Defense is that to neutralize an individual with the maximum security, there should be at least two who intervene. This allows for the favoring of bar or lock techniques instead of strikes and in that way limiting the risk of accident. Thierry continues explaining how the constant evolution of the F.F.B.D. Self Defense method has led him to create, along with his instructors, a kind of combat route in order to put students up against real, possible situations. “For more than ten years ago now, I’ve been training professionals from all areas of security, whether it be in tonfa, tactical telescopic baton, or professional defense, and I can highlight one constant that appears regularly in the feedback from my students: the necessity of focusing training on concrete situations just

HIDDEN WEAPONS

as they can be found at any moment in the exercise of their duty. At the beginning, my instructors and I integrated situation scenes in our classes, which we tried to make as realistic as possible. But we quickly discovered the limits of that kind of work. In effect, from the point of view of the technical memorization, this way of doing it was valid, but something was missing. The ambiance was missing, the protective surroundings of the room didn’t invite the students to put themselves in the role of the characters that they had to represent. So, I got my pedagogical team together in order to look for a way to make these situations come alive to our students. The solution then

came on its own: given that we had a very important group of instructors, why don’t we rely on that in order to create scenes in a more natural way. Then we began to practice more and more situations outside, the change of scene often being enough to make the exercise more solemn and believable. However, we noticed after a while that we still weren’t close enough to reality for our likely. The situations, though much more believable, were too static to be realistic. The idea, though good, had to be perfected. Once again, I added my operational experience to that of the F.F.B.D. Self Defense instructors, all of them security professionals. Together we

looked for what the particularity was of security mission, whether public or private, and we discovered that the main characteristic and common to our respective missions was… uncertainty. In effect, no professional, whether a gendarme, national police, or private security agent, can say at the beginning of a mission what situations he will have to confront. If we wanted to stay close to reality, we therefore had to create a test that would link field situations that are totally unpredictable in their development and unrelated to one another. In this way we could increase the uncertainty to the maximum and put the students in a frame of mind that was the closest possible to what they have every day when they are in the field. The stress route in its final version had been born! The most interesting thing about this route is that we can also propose it to some private students who come to be initiated in Selfdefense. Leaving aside professional kinds of interventions, everyone can, at one time or another, find themselves facing a dangerous dog, or having to defend oneself or to defend another person from an unjustified aggression. In this way, confronted with situations that, for them, are completely out of the ordinary, the students plainly perceive the difficulty of managing a situation in which a gesture or an

inappropriate word can have grave consequences… what the simple technical practiced on a tatami can’t offer them.” “And because there are more and more women who want to acquire realistic self-defense methods and more adapted to them, we have created a feminine Self-defense method,” continues Thierry. “We now organize with regularity training sessions where women of all ages (we have a brave and loyal student who is going to turn 77 years old!) come to learn some precepts and simple techniques especially studied for the feminine morphology, which allow them, within the law, to dominate an aggressor or, should the case arise, to gain enough time to escape. The particularity of this kind of training resides in the fact that we focus more on the psychology, as much of the aggressor as the victim, than on pure technique. More than anything, we seek to generate confidence in our feminine students so that they don’t constitute easy prey with an attitude that is too fearful. In his search for operational techniques, Thierry Delfief pays close and constant attention to realism and simplicity. Though moving around in the world of professional self-defense, Thierry has never denied his martial past in favor of a legal professionalism. He clearly recognizes that the great

majority of the techniques that he teaches come from Martial Arts and combat sports. Concerned about the credibility of his teaching and aware of the constant evolution of techniques, Thierry has begun, with the members of the F.F.B.D. Self Defense, an import return to the origins of the Martial Arts. In the context of this constant quest, he regularly organizes some crosstraining along with a discipline from the martial world. The concept is simple: in a defined self-defense theme, each discipline offers their responses in function of their specifics. The objective of this kind of gathering is to create a bridge between the security world and that of Martial Arts and combat sports in order to show that no discipline is better than another, but that the best solution is found in the use of techniques from different disciplines when they offer the most appropriate response to a security problem. Since the creation of this gathering, some cross training meetings have already been organized with prestigious experts such as: Alain Floquet (Aikibudo), Dominique Valera (Karate Contact), Christian Derval (-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), JeanMarie Merchet (Kick-Boxing and Muay Thai), Robert Paturel (French Boxing) and also Raphael Schmitz (Integral Combat)… This work to get closer to the Martial Arts and combat sports is

not by chance. Thierry, as a shrewd trainer, is aware that the experience of various people is a very valuable tool. For that, each day he enriches the F.F.B.D. Self Defense method with the feedback of the experience of the professionals that use it, in this way increasing its adequacy for the realities in the street. “Only in this way can we follow the evolution of delinquency, and constantly adapt our dialogue and our techniques to the realities of the surroundings. It is this constant questioning that has led us to develop a special area of hidden weapon prevention,” explains Thierry. “These past years, delinquency has progressed a great deal and has undergone an important mutation. This novelty, in turn, has caused some profound changes in security professionals, be they public or private. The security professionals must now, more than ever, test a great quantity of preventive and defensive techniques in order to confront the conflictive situations that they are exposed to every day in their jobs. Now, the delinquents generally act in gangs, outside of any familiar, social, or moral reference. They commit evermore grave crimes and aggressions. They are better organized and they don’t hesitate to use violence regardless of who their victims are. Often armed and being trained by unscrupulous people in such a way that they need not envy the training of professionals, the delinquents now have at their disposal an arsenal that’s been especially studied to be the most lethal possible. I’m not exaggerating; I’ve lived this violence daily. During the ten years I spent as operational director in the Intervention Group and Parisian Network Protection (G.I.P.R.), many times I had to confront attacks with bladed weapons. During this period and after, thanks to some seizures in the field, we have recovered an impressive arsenal of bladed weapons. The ingenuity of the delinquents is absolutely terrifying. We can find in the street some chiseled and highly adapted rings that are fit with a tremendous hook as sharp as a scalpel. Or also some lighters that look ordinary, that can be used to light a cigarette, but from where one can, with a little pressure, flick out an iron point. And, what to say about the sharpened telephone cards or the ones that are fit with razor blades, and the hats that have fish hooks sewn into them? In intervention, it’s necessary to look

everywhere. The smallest object can camouflage a weapon. The danger comes from the hands and it is essential to always watch them (among others, the palms that can hide blades and rings),” assures Thierry Delhief. “Everyday objects such as a belt can camouflage a dagger in the buckle or in the leather. A banal necklace being in reality a bradawl can be tremendously effective in expert hands. On sale to the public, these accessories have been seized various times from adolescents on trains… Other hidden weapons, already present in other countries, are beginning to show up in ours, some being capable of launching projectiles!!! We easily understand that, with these kinds of objects circulating around, the minimal control of papers or transport license can very quickly swing things,” concludes Thierry. “Today, this is even more certain in sensitive contexts like aeronautical security for reasons we can imagine. On September 11, 2001, the general public discovered that it’s possible to provoke thousands of deaths having, to begin, a simple cutter as the only weapon. Supported by my self-defense experience in closed mediums acquired in the subway brigade, I’ve developed a training section especially adapted to the techniques of what they call “tubular combat”, that is to say, in a confined space (train, airplane, bus…). In this matter, the airline companies regularly call me to assure the training of navigation personnel and of the on-board security agents,” adds Thierry. “Through its different components (tactics, techniques, judicial, medical, field simulation with a stress route, hidden weapon section, technical exchanges with other disciplines…) the F.F.B.D. Self Defense training tries to be as close to reality as possible. The interest in the different methods of evaluation that we’ve installed with my team (level, stress route) is to allow us to evaluate how the student has made the empty-hand or baton defense techniques automatic. If they are professionals, we evaluate whether they have integrated the intervention methods with their colleagues, how they specifically interpret the legal framework that governs interventions, how they manage unusual situations (among others, those referring to animal attacks or first-aid) and many other details that will make them effective professionals, sure of themselves and able to help people who

need it. If it’s a private student, we’ll evaluate the domination of the gestures or verbal negotiation. Obviously, in this case we equally judge the Selfdefense techniques as such, but also the knowledge of the legal texts so that our students are capable of protecting themselves and others being conscious, respectful, and law-abiding citizens. Our course program allows the students to practice on the physical as well as the psychological level. All our efforts tend to faithfully reproduce the reality where every word or movement that is either inadequate or misunderstood can provoke a conflictive situation,” concludes Thierry. This avant-garde work of the F.F.B.D. Self Defense, along with the hidden weapons and stress management sections, allow it to train hundreds of students regularly. Those who have gone through these modules speak very clearly: “We believed we were in the street!” With this constant concern about realism, the F.F.B.D. After all, this is a serious martial arts magazine and, while I actually enjoy some creative and r elaxing time cooking in my kitchen (I am Italian!), I chose the title of this month's column as an apt analogy for a disturbing trend that is currently proliferating in the martial arts world. To t h e p o i n t : I a m talking about the literally hundreds

Great Masters of young (20s & 30s) black belts who claim to have invented a “new” system or style. You may think that, being a Founder of a martial art style myself, I should not be so strongly critical of others following the same path, but…there are several important differences. But before I highlight those differences, let's clarify what “founding” means in a martial arts context.

Combat Hapkido There are 3 categories of innovation in the martial arts that provide an opportunity for a practitioner to call him/her self a “Founder”: 1. Inventing / creating a completely new, original, unique martial art. This is virtually impossible at this point in history. Every martial discipline and combat art worth practicing already exists. Most cultures and ethnic groups around the World have, over the last 5000 years, developed fighting methods (armed & unarmed) for war, self-defense, s p o r t , fitness, religious rituals a n d

even entertainment. There are only so many punches, kicks, joint locks and throws that the human body can do. 2. Creating a “new style” of an existing, established, traditional martial art. This involves modernizing the original art by adding some carefully selected techniques, deleting some obsolete movements and reorganizing the structure and / or the sequence of the material. That's what I did with Combat Hapkido. I did NOT invent a “new” martial art. I developed a new “style” of Hapkido, and a different methodology for learning and teaching that great art. I simply evolved an existing art. And, incidentally, I am extremely proud of the fact that Combat Hapkido was formally recognized and registered as an “official

Great Masters

style” (kwan) of Hapkido in 1999 by the Korean government body that regulates all martial arts. 3. Developing an “informal”, modern, loosely-structured fighting system for a specific group: police, military, civilian personal protection, etc.. These programs often include firearms and edge weapons training, do not require any traditional clothing or protocols and do not offer belt ranking. Now that we have examined the 3 possible avenues of innovation and creativity in the martial arts, it is time to ask how, with the immense body of material already in existence, can a 20 year old, who barely made it to 1st degree black belt, “invent” a new martial art and call himself a “Founder”. Because I am also the President of an organization called “The

Combat Hapkido World Martial Alliance” (with a distinguished board of famous Grandmasters and martial arts legends), my office receives several requests a month to “recognize” young instructors as “founders” of their own art and issue them the appropriate official credentials. While in a few, rare cases, some of the more mature masters have been evaluated and approved, the majority are, as we say “a joke!” When asked to describe their new art and how it had been developed, the typical answer is: “I took some kicks from TaeKwonDo, some punches from boxing, some JiuJitsu locks and some Judo throws and I combined them together.” Wow…so much for creativity! Founding a new style is not the same as making a fruit salad where you just throw a bunch of pieces of fruit in a bowl and mix them. Anyone can do that. Founding a new style involves the careful blending of different techniques, often from multiple arts, in a congruent, intelligent structure resulting in a smooth flowing continuum and a meaningful, efficient teaching syllabus. So the question is: what separates the true Founder from the fruit salad maker? The obvious answer would appear to be “exceptional t e c h n i c a l knowledge”. And that would be correct. But I submit to you that that alone is not enough. I believe that AGE and EXPERIENCE must also be indispensable pre-requisites before the extremely e x c e p t i o n a l appellation of “Founder” can be earned. AGE first confers the wisdom and maturity necessary for responsible decisions. It also teaches us how to subjugate our ego, resulting in sincere humility. Finally, with age, we refine the ethical thinking that generates respect and appreciation for the work of others. I do not mean that to become a Founder you must be really “old”. I just believe that it is ridiculous to take seriously anyone under 40 years old claiming to be a Founder. EXPERIENCE. In this case, it does not refer to the length of time one spent in training (although that is also very important!). I mean comprehensive “life” experience as well as the quality of experience. It includes business experience, organizational skills, creative contributions, teaching, research, etc.. In other words, the kind of practical, real life experience that can only be acquired over the course of many years

(back to the Age factor!). Real life experience, like age, also contributes to the maturity and wisdom of the individual. The two are inextricably entwined. In conclusion, I believe that the continuing evolution and modernization of the martial arts, fueled by the introduction of new styles and methods created by serious, dedicated, and profoundly knowledgeable instructors, is a positive factor. The creativity, research, hard

work and courage of the true Founders greatly benefits the entire martial arts community and their contributions enrich our history. But the fruit salads poorly and hastily concocted by young, egotistical and deluded buffoons, seeking only to aggrandize themselves are a disgrace and an embarrassment. The martial arts community must reject their fake products and deny them the credibility they so desperately crave. Let's send them back to the kitchen to wash the dishes.

Always with the Ochikara, "The Great Strength" (called e-bunto in the Shizen vernacular tongue) or secret wisdom of the ancient Miryoku Japanese shamans, as a backdrop, the author takes us into a world of genuine reflections that are capable to move at once both the reader's heart and head, thus placing him continuously in front of the abyss of the invisible, as the true final frontier of personal and collective consciousness. The spiritual taken not as religion, but as the study of the invisible, was the way of the ancient Miryoku sages to approach the mystery in the framework of a culture as rich as unknown, to which the author has wholeheartedly devoted. Alfredo Tucci, Manager Director to Budo International Publishing Co. and author in the past 30 years of a large number of titles about the Warrior's Way, offers us a set of extraordinary and profound reflections, which can be read individually in no particular order. Each one of them opens up a window to us through which we can take a look at the most varied subjects from an unexpected angle, now dotted with humor now with forcefulness and grandiosity, placing us in front of eternal matters with the view of the one who has just arrived and doesn't agree with the common places in which everyone coincides. We can affirm with conviction that no reader will be indifferent to this book; such is the strength and intensity of its contents. Saying this is saying a lot in a world crowded with collective mangers, interested and behavioral ideologies, manipulators and, in short, spurious interests and mediocrity. It is therefore a text for big souls and intelligent people who are ready to look at life and mystery with the freedom of the most restless and scrutinizing minds, without dogmas, without transient morals, without subterfuges...

WT Universe „What we stand for“ A Suggestion: Read everything thrice! 1. For the first time - just as mechanically, as you are most likely accustomed to reading all your modern books, texts and papers. 2. For the second time - read it to yourself as you would do to someone else. 3. And not until the third time: Try to advance to the essence of what you have read, only then you can find the deeper purpose, I wish you with all my heart. G. I. Gurdjieff

Wing Tsun Universe (WTU) does not see itself as another Union of Selfdefence, Martial Arts et cetera. We see ourselves as a movement, a movement for harmonic development, deployment of human potential. Both terms development and deployment in a sense of natural change coming from within, not an artificial augment from outside influences, but the emergence of what has already been there. We understand ourselves as another link in a long chain of active philosophies. A philosophy that for it's given time and location can take shape correlative to the given culture and come into effect. As you most likely already know, thus is in our approach done in three different ways, basic areas our elite members train to harmonically evolve in, being: 1)WTU Wing Tsun - “Exoteric Circle of the WTU” a)The Center of Motion - „The School of the instant“ with the fields: Working groups: Practicegroups, Circles, Clubs, Lodges - WTU Wing Tsun b)The Center of Thinking - „The Science of Conciousness“ Working Place: Wing Tsun University (WTU UNI) c)The Center of Emotion - „The Path of the Heart“ • WTU Arts ans Martial Arts (AMA) 2)WTU Fiz Lez Lou

- “Mesoteric Cicle of the WTU”

3)WTU Secret Circle - “Esoteric Circle of the WTU” For all those having already developed and harmonised the centers to a certain point and take part in exploring new territory of notional, emotional or physical movement themselves.

WT Universe The LOGO In this article we would like to introduce our logo and our salutation. Our logo is no random combination of symbols, but communicates - as does our salutation - the philosophy and attitude behind all of it. Starting from the outside, the symbolism of the two outstretched wings stands for freedom. They symbolise the rise from the ground and the lifting into the skies. One could also say, the gain of a new perspective and an advanced point of view. The beast the wings are representing is the eagle. Protection is another aspect of the wing shapes. In our philosophy of the "Trinity of Human Centres" they stand for the heart, the emotional centre, which in it's developed function is also called the "Silent Knowledge". The sword stands for the clarity of thinking (razor-sharp thoughts), the keenness and willingness, to set boundaries, to say "No" and defend oneself. Just as well, the sword stands for combat, the willingness to carry out and complete inevitable disputes here and now. Moreover, for Yang, being not only the shifting and moving force, but also an ultimately destructive one, as new concepts can only arise after letting go of old ones. Still, for every Yang to maintain efficacy a Yin is required. Without Yin it is but a puff without effect. Of the three centres, it is the one of thinking, in it's developed form known as "Clear Thinking". The two serpents mean flexibility, adaptability, health and medicine as well as virulency to us. They symbolise the Yin - the ever transforming and adapting character but also the guile. Yin is the medium through which the Yang is moved. The Yin without the Yang tends to stagnation. We associate them to our centre of instincts. The circle is wholeness in itself, uniting the sum of the parts to a greater entity. The circle is harmonic and represents organic thinking and prospering, along with the resulting efficacy. It also circumscribes the harmonic interplay of surrounded and surrounding parts. It is the borderline, the point of contact, of inner and outer forces alike, which are nonetheless mutually affecting each other. The circle is the final symbol of Yin and Yang's unseparable interaction. Unable to exist without one another, something forced into an extreme position of Yin, will react in an extreme Yang and likewise. Extreme yielding for example will unload in an extremely violent explosion.

The Wing Tsun Universe Movement is not a territorial notion, but simply the current vessel - or, even better - the moment's expression of the laws of nature it is based upon. Thus we see the WTU logo as a symbol for a certain kind of people. People in which the three "centres" (of thought, emotion and movement) are harmonically developed and as balanced as possible, or who are working on that, and we are thus facing a human, possessing somewhat of a real will, by that activating two additional centres: the "Clarity of Thinking" and the "Silent Knowledge". A human being, no longer reacting conditioned to inner and outer impulses, not parroting, but through his own experiences gained knowledge and abilities able to take a firm stand as a real individual. This having nothing to do with education, status or success in his of her outside life. A WTU practitioner might not be a charming or even sympathetic person, being able to say a clear "No", setting boundaries, not looking for trouble, but still not afraid to face it neither when necessary. As such, one does not seek the faceless collective, but the real community instead, knowing, that certain aspects in a person's life can only develop in healthy organically functioning surrounding. For that reason we would like to summarise the above mentioned in two sentences: In order to grant efficacy three conditions are required: The right people, to the right time, in the right place. Necessity creates organs.

SALVE - The salutation in the Wing Tsun Universe In all cultures and societies there are certain rules, that allow a better cohabitation. As such, the form of greeting each other in martial art systems is a fundamental element, of globally valid form when coming and going. The salutation in the Wing Tsun Universe derives from the realistion of the three "centres" (of thought, emotion and movement). Our greeting is a person's sign, who's aware of his three centres in this action and simultaneously a gesture for the person being greeted, who on his part becomes aware of facing someone in his entity and of being given full attention.

WT Universe The basic position is an upright, relaxed stand. With the head raised, the legs initially stay closely together (about one inch distance), hands hanging down sideways unstressed. The open lead-hand (usually the right as the center of thinking) rises in a fluid movement over the Hara (solar plexus, the centre of movement) up to the heart's position (emotional centre) and from there on forward along the body's middle axis with the hand's edge raised vertically. This is the symbol for a peaceful intention of the salutation and shows, that no weapon lies drawn in the main hand, nor itself is intended to be used as such. The second hand, the transportation-hand, remains at the side, hanging down relaxed or carrying a weapon. Simultaneously to the fluid greeting movement of the lead-hand, the stance opens sideways, rearranging the weight with the lead-hand's opposite foot stepping one foot's distance to the side into a normal, still parallel stand. The resulting final stance of the lead-hand derives from the buddhistic gesture for peace, the second hand remains ready for action. Going in the final position we intonate the word 'Salve'. Originating from our own european cultural area, the ancient roman greeting was used up into the middle ages as a mainly but not only military salutation and to demonstrate respect and honour among civilised warriors. The greeting is supposed to convey a friendly and respectful way of communication, and to bring together all gathered participants. At the same time the salutation is symbol for an upright person, for someone to take a stand. And here as well, we would like to put one final sentence at the end, symbolising the "Salve" in the WTU: A "human being" should not bow to another, nor should he have another bow before him. The Zen Nihon Toyama Ryu Iai -Do Renmei ( ZNTIR ), once reviewed and adapted the concepts and methodology of a school that proceeds from a method of real combat, is the body that currently intends to maintain this tradition and original forms alive through a system that unifies body, mind and spirit in a realistic and effective way. This DVD was done at the instance of practitioners of the Spanish subsidiary of the Zen Nihon Toyama Ryu Iaido Renmei (ZNTIR Spain Branch) to present to everybody a combat style with a real sword, created last century, but with roots in the ancient fighting techniques of feudal Japan. In it you will find the basic structure of the methodology applied in the style, from the coded warm up and preparation exercises, cutting exercises, guards, the school kata, work in pairs and initiation in the Tameshigiri or cutting exercises on a real target , the cornerstone of the Toyama- Ryu. We hope that knowledge of the existence of a style such as the Toyama-Ryu Batto-Jutsu acts as a revulsive of a traditional way and yet very different from current combat disciplines, that attract those who want to go further in their martial practices. Those interested in the Japanese sword and initiates, will find useful this DVD both as support to their learning and as a reference.
