Chin Na techniques require a thorough study not only of the body joints, but also of Anatomy in general. Chin means "catch, capture" and Na means "control." Then we can say that Chin Na are those techniques of gripping, pressure and dislocation, by which we can control our opponent in a defense situation. The Shaolin Chin Na techniques are used to neutralize or interrupt an attack. Although its origins date back practically to the foundation of the Shaolin Temple itself, it is well known that already during the last Chinese dynasty, Chin Na techniques were most popular among the population in general, so in that time the techniques of capture and control lived their moment of boom and expansion. Chin-na practice should be done placing a greater emphasis on the development of the control and sensitivity needed to leave an attacker defenseless by any of the 5 principles of Chin Na: Muscle or tendon tearing, Incorrect bone placement, Blocking or cutting off respiration, Blocking a vein or artery, Pulsing a channel of Qi.

"The first step in discipline Is to postpone the gratifications." Sensei Richard Kim ontrary to what our omnipotent youthful fantasies want us to believe, in life we will not be able to get through with everything. Life teaches us our limits and although many of them once known, with much effort and success, can be overcome, many others simply won't be, either because we cannot handle them, or simply because is not worth it the effort. Nobody prepares us - not even warns us! - for this reality. On the contrary, everything in the optimistic culture and in literature foments the illusions and applauds the conviction that you can do whatever you want, that everything is possible, and that there are no bills for our options. The shock is tremendous, not only by the blow itself, which often is not that serious (or is it?), but rather because of the surprise and numbness, that is, by the form in which it's lived by those who were not even capable of suspecting the possibility of failure. Frequently there's nothing we can do but suck it up and endure, for there where strength and wisdom won't reach to let us react correctly (which is many parts!), only endurance will. Discipline is then an irreplaceable tool, for in this matter, as in so many others, one can accumulate reserves in his "inner bank" through training. All discipline begins in an act of will; When this act is deliberately and consciously focused, it becomes a purpose. When purpose becomes a habit, we are disciplined. Discipline allows you to endure when there is no other resource available, but also lets you focus on the goal when everything is going well, at which moment the forces of inertia and distractions will stalk persistently your intentions. A key moment in the adoption of any discipline is that of its beginning. Understanding the need for a transformation always leads us to the conviction that it must take place through a change of customs and every change requires discipline. No matter how deep the purpose or the conviction of carrying out the necessary transformation, a part of us will rebel against that purpose and it will do so with the same violence with which that part of ourselves feels threatened, even if it's the meanest and more abject, horrible or miserable part of ourselves. Once decided to enter the drug unhooking treatment cycles of my friend Sรกnchez Barrio, the addicts who attended those retreats, often allowed themselves a "farewell kick". That "kick" was much more dramatic and destructive than any other, for although they had seen a light at the end of the tunnel and had decided to go for help, they discovered in this way how little strength they had to go through it and how little they could trust themselves. Discipline, when it ceases to be a habit and becomes a part of our being, makes us paradoxically freer. This is only possible by the conquest of restraint combined with respontaneity, that is, spontaneity passed through the sieve of "true will." Doing what we truly want, our true will, is one of the most difficult issues in our lives. First, because understanding such a thing requires a deep knowledge of oneself. The difficulty stems from the
C
fact that our ego tends to identify with transient gratifications, or with circumstantial stimuli, usually linked to life ways or customs, whose only virtue is that they are known, and we already know that although we long for the unknown, we only want the known. Many of these customs are simple ways of escape from pain, tricks that produce momentary relief and for a limited period of time, but don't really solve the problem that generates such pain. The traditional medicine classics said that everything that relieves the symptom accentuates the cause, because both are opposite and complementary. To face and heal our deepest pain is not done from one day to the next, but every day we move closer or further away from its solution with the options we take, and there is precisely where discipline is of great help. However, once the escape route is found, addiction is easily generated. The body is then an indispensable tool of conscience, for it will always tell us if such a path is a contribution to our individual growth and therefore something positive, or, on the contrary, it's a simple prestidigitation trick of the ego. If we are not careful, it will finally do so through sickness and pain, because the frequent repetition of a leakage scheme always creates a functional pollution that sooner or later will take a toll. The ego keeps insisting by telling us continually "I am that way!" and ending with the old "No one understands me" ... wasted words for the same and wretched maneuver: evasion. But as my friend Antonio Cruzado's mother says, "Reality is very stubborn", and in the end, it waits for us in the following corner with renewed power. Well-understood, discipline is, in consequence, a tool of the higher Self, the nuclear Self, the one which remains through the changes of our lives, trying to manifest. Discipline allows us contributing to modulate the changes, turning the helm in the direction of the true port that longs our soul. However, discipline requires tenacity and perseverance, two virtues which are alien and contrary to the superficial hedonism that controls the common people today. If it's not fun ... it's not good! If it does not produce immediate relief, why straining to continue? If to these attitudes we add the omnipresent subjectivism and the vital relativism that dominate the current thinking, the picture is a bleak one, for without a certain dose of conviction and understanding, first step towards a conscious change, every maneuver of transformation or metamorphosis will be subject to failure. We would be facing a situation of negative chain reactions, a destructive perverse cycle: Bringing about change requires being tempered and having temper takes discipline, but without discipline there is no possible change. What to do then? Everyone is so weak and squeamish that they hardly resist a simple push (sometimes I have to stand on my tiptoes to walk along in life ...) and it seems that the only alternative is resorting to a cunning ploy served with the most exquisite subtlety. Well, when it is not possible to attack directly a target, either by lack of forces or by excess of conflict, it is necessary to use the "indirect approach". When dealing with a pole we always act on the opposite, in this way we can go modulating the change, adding what is lacking in positive, removing what is in excess and in negative.
The only path of healing or growth is the natural pathway. In Oriental medicine, in the analysis of the five elements are described a thousand ways that something goes wrong, but only one way that it's going well. This cycle is called "creative cycle"; All others, overflowing, destructive, defective and so on are perfidious and unbalancing relations of Chi. The only way for something to go well is that it follows its own nature, and the nature of things is to grow and manifest through its fruits. It turns out that although we are somewhat more complicated than an apple tree, this reduction to the absurd of the sense of life resists all brainy criticism. Happiness, beyond that slobbering idea that the current culture embodies, is simply to take everything we carry inside and fulfill our most positive destiny; in such work and this is the great paradox, we always come to give the world what we do not have, and in this way we fulfill our dream. The immense power of the way of consciousness transcends ideologies, cycles, fashions and times. On the road to the awareness of being, we discover the tools we need to reach our goals. It is almost like one of those video games, in which the protagonist goes in each level gaining weapons or abilities that allow him to fight in the following phase. Life always puts us in front of what we need to keep growing, even when such situations may seem incomprehensible to us. We have all gone through destructive cycles, times when the compass did not find the North; times of restlessness, pain or confusion. It is natural that this is so; even the most seasoned of the Warriors knows the taste of defeat. What sets him apart from the common man is that he does not conform or resign himself; he gathers his forces, heals his wounds and returns to combat, but with the lesson well learned. To persist in error, to cultivate nonsense, to live in a continuous escape, will never soothe our deep wound, whatever it may be; rather, it will do it by looking at it without resentment, face to face, so as to take away its power over us, with the greed of one who loves life intensely, with the power of the one who knows his best destiny. Empty and without power, our internal enemy will fall thus defeated, without acrimony or drama, and everything in the outside world will be adapt to such a change, surrendering without conditions to whom so takes over his destiny. In order to be able to tread this land with our head high in pursuit of our greatest design, discipline (no matter how bad a press it may have in these days when the masculine or authority principle is being so mistreated) is an achievement and an irreplaceable tool, and perhaps for this reason, today more than ever, the martial ways, or any other that involves body, emotion and mind in a single act of presence in the here and now, are an irreplaceable treasure. Fleeing maneuvers are always useless, because in this paradoxical world, that of which we try to get away is just what we find. No matter where you go, the one who goes there is always you! And your virtues and your miseries travel with you in your backpack. In addition, every escape routine generates a loss of personal power; all sustained effort in the right direction increases our personal power. Without the strength of discipline, we will not be able to achieve our dreams; for this, in the way of the Warrior is well-known the slogan "without personal power nothing is possible", and the road of growth requires a lot of sustained effort. On the contrary, in order to follow the involutive path, always destructive and therefore sterile, all you have to do is let yourself go and slip along the slide of your facilities, fears and wants and identify with them. As in the case of energy in the cycle of the five elements, the direction of growth is only one and always the same, for All and for Everything: Forward, upward, inward and finally, towards the Whole. There is no satisfaction or fullness similar to following the natural path; that is the prize, a constant gratification, temperate, deep and intense that can accompany us every day, more and more frequently and throughout a full and fruitful life. When the omnipotent fantasies of your most youthful, rebellious and conspicuous side urge you to question your path with heart or the reasons for your discipline, remember! Connect with that powerful sensation, that space in which tranquility is the prize, in which the stillness is pleasant, in which the nuclear Self looks from its center as the images of change march before him, without judgments, without pain, serenely... finally, in the verses of the poet: "And in the twilight ... tired and aching the body, replete and tempered the soul, surrender in the arms of the night."
Shaolin Temple SHAOLIN LUOHAN SHIBASHOU When we try to rummage through the ancient texts of the Shaolin temple about Luohan Shi Ba Shou we find that they date back to the time of Bodhidharma (Damo), who was the father and founder of Chan Buddhism or Zen. It is said that after having created Yi Jin Jing (treatise on muscles and tendons) and Xi Sui Jing (chi kung of marrow washing), he developed a series of movements which were referred to as Luohan Shi Ba Shou, or the 18 hands of Luohan, which would shape the first movements of Shaolin Kung Fu. Although this story is not corroborated to a hundred percent, according to the Shaolin Quan Pu (少林拳谱), one of the oldest Shaolin books, in the distant Sui Dynasty, the Shaolin warrior monks developed a series of movements for the meditating monks. The movements were very simple and were chosen according to the 18 statues of Luohan, hence the name of Luohan Shi Ba Shou (18 hands of Luohan). Both stories, though distant in time, coincide in that the exercises were created for the meditating monks so they could exercise and learn to defend themselves. Shaolin Temple ver the years, these forms gradually developed until the Tang Dynasty, in which they already had evolved to 36 movements. At the end of the Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty, monk Jue Yuan and monk Qiu Yue, along with other monks, developed up to 173 more moves. But it was not until the Ming Dynasty that a group of monks decided to regroup the forms of Luohan according to their characteristics and their antiquity, unifying, ordering and organizing them in 18 taolu (forms) with a total of 324 movements. In addition, to each form was added the opening and closing movements.

Shaolin Temple Its style is particular and its movements are continuous, the movements of defense and counterattack are clearly seen and it's one of the standard forms that Masters teach in the Shaolin Temple. Today we can find different versions of the same form and this is due to the large number of schools that have emerged in recent years; although the basis is the same, some movements may vary depending on the lineage, Master, etc. Formerly, the Shaolin Temple in Songshan was divided into four families for better management of the Monastery, since its
territory was much wider than what we know today. All these families practiced Kung Fu, but each one had its own characteristics although they lived within the same Temple. For example, the Shaolin Luohan Shi Ba Shou of the west gate family is not the same as the one of the south gate, and the same thing happens with so many other forms. Shaolin Luohan Shi Ba Shou has managed to reach the present day through the heritage transmitted from Masters to disciples, and we can say that for Kung Fu lovers, its knowledge and practice are invaluable.

Kung Fu Features The Shaolin Luohan Shi Ba Shou is one of the essential empty hand forms of the Shaolin Temple and one of the most practiced. Within the form we find real and unreal movements, defensive and offensive, fist blows, palm and double palm strikes, which turns the Luohan Shi Ba Shou into an excellent form for both advanced and beginner practitioners, since its characteristics embrace the roots of the authentic Shaolin Kung Fu.

“To achieve perfection in the movements we must be constant in the practice of the Luohan Shi Ba Shou, since although it is a short form, it has nonetheless its own degree of difficulty.
If we continue analyzing the form, we will find that by training it daily we can develop a basis that will serve us for the workout of other more complex Shaolin forms. The positions that compose the Luohan Shi Ba Shou are ma bu, gong bu, xu bu, du li bu and ding bu, which are repeated throughout the execution. To achieve perfection in the movements we must be constant in the practice of the Luohan Shi Ba Shou, since although it is a short form, it has nonetheless its own degree of difficulty. We will need to work our coordination and suppleness, especially on the shifting from one position to another. We also must be quick to hit and contract the blow. Another important feature that we cannot fail mentioning is the use of the look within the practice and execution of the form; it's vitally important that our eyes constantly follow our actions, blows, blockages, changes of position, etc. Today is normal seeing many practitioners who fail to accurately match their eyes with the action they are performing; Luohan Shi Ba Shou is a form that contains several changes of directions and height, and blows to one side and the other, so if we don't follow our actions exactly with our eyes, we will never be able to dominate to perfection not only this form, but any one we train.

Great Masters
REGRETS “Great men are distinguished by the small details during their existence.” I was driving a car through the mountains of Tenerife Sur. We were very close to the Teide. The Teide (El Teide, in Spanish, originally “Echeyde” or “Echeide” in Guanche, the autochthonous language of the Canary Isles, Spain) is a volcano located on the island of Tenerife. With a height of 3,718 meters above sea level, and 7,500 meters above the ocean floor, is the highest peak in Spain, that of any land emerged land from the Atlantic Ocean and the third largest volcano on Earth from its base on the ocean floor, after Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, both on the Island of Hawaii. In addition, the height of the Teide turns the island of Tenerife in the highest tenth island of the whole world. At my side was traveling a friend and a half student. He had decided to get away from his harassed business routine in Zaragoza. A couple of months before his beautiful girlfriend, with whom he had been living, had broken his heart. She had decided to backtrack, or maybe restart her sentimental and

Great Masters professional life. I knew them both and I maintained a good friendship and dialogues in the distance through Facebook, e-mail or telephone, meeting from time to time there, in Madrid or La CoruĂąa. We all, or almost all know that trying to interfere in the intimate relationships of others, is not only "not advisable", but also you can end up bearing the main brunt. Being aware of such a certain affirmation, I had tried to give some warnings or suggestions to both of them with the good purpose of helping them recover that illusion and feelings that one day had been born to unite them in some way. Then, when I was almost certain that there was nothing to be done and one of the parties "was very clear and completely sure of what was doing," I decided to stay out of it. We could all have remained friends, but it was also very clear, at least to me, that the one who would remain my friend

Great Masters ... would be him and not her, who had actually been in my life because of my relationship with him, and not for herself. RubĂŠn knew that I was going to spend my summer holidays in the Canary Isles, and more concretely in Tenerife South, where I had previously lived for about 6 years. Then he asked me if he could come with me to the island. He needed to escape, go away, live new experiences and try to forget the bitter moments he had lived in his city, Saragossa. And that's how in the first few days on the beautiful island, we celebrated the birthday of a friend, Vanesita Linda (on August 15, 2010) in Santa Cruz, in the north of Tenerife, and the next day my own birthday, on August 16th. We also share with my friend Jaime Falero, actor and film director of action. The days had been passing among sunbaths, sea, mountains, trips and various celebrations with friends, fantastic people I had met in my previous years of residence in Tenerife. So, on that day, I had decided to take him to the famous Teide Volcano, which is part of the Teide National Park, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, on June
28, 2007, in Christchurch (New Zealand). It is also a natural protected area in the category of Natural Monument that encloses the volcanic complex Teide-Pico Viejo, a large stratovolcano of the vesubian type that still remains active in the wake of historical eruptions occurred not too long ago (the last one, the one of Narices del Teide, in 1798) and the fumaroles it regularly emits from its crater. The point is that we were talking animatedly about our things while admiring the natural beauty of the road. Suddenly, a brown dog just skin and bones arose running out of the volcanic rocks. The animal stepped onto the road, gazing with joy at our car. It was something completely unexpected, but fortunately I managed to avoid running him over, while I tried to maintain the thread of the conversation with my friend. We continued along the road. My friend was most excited about his subject and, not wanting to interrupt him, I kept driving while I looked back through the rearview mirror and the side mirrors. The beats of my heart forced me to slow down, while still trying to visualize that desperate little dog on the road. At a given moment, I made up my mind to interrupt his talking by asking him if he hadn't seen what I had seen. - What? - He asked me. - That little dog that suddenly appeared from the lava and got into the road - I answered. Somehow upset, he said: - Well, yeah, I think I saw a dog that was out there, but I didn't pay much attention.
Fu Shih Kenpo Deeply worried inside me, I told him: - We should go back and get him. It's clear that some cruel soulless has abandoned him in this arid desert. That poor animal was very thin. And on hearing our car ran to meet us in the hope of receiving our help. - And what do we do with him? - My friend told me. - Well, right now I don't know, but at least we can pick him up and take him to a reception center. I cannot take him to Madrid - I said - because I'm always traveling and I wouldn't be able to take care of him properly. So we kept going down the road. I didn't see him again through the mirrors of the car. But it's also true that in the following hours I couldn't concentrate on anything other than feeling a deep pain and remorse for not having assisted the poor dog. Two and a half years have passed since then, and I often remember that "tender image of a desperate poor dog lost in the middle of the road, with his luminous eyes calling for help, while expressing the joy of seeing our car." I have told this passage of my life on several occasions. I've prayed for him, I have begged him and God to forgive me for my stupid reaction and conjectures; for not having stopped and caressed him inviting him to get into our car; for not having given him water, food and protection. Sometimes I've even cried, because the image of that day will never be erased from my mind and my heart. "I have regrets, not only for having done wrong, but for the good that I could have done and I did not." "Doing things well is to continue practicing Fu-Shih Kenpo. Not doing things well is to have failed in the principles of my Martial Art."

In this new DVD of Vovinam, Patrick Levet has wanted to show the facets of the use and handling of the Vietnamese Stick. Although little known, the Vietnamese long stick is, without a doubt, the most important weapon among all the weapons of the traditional Martial Arts of Vietnam. The Vovinam school, in its official program, only proposes the Stick Form (Tu Tuong Con Phap) and the counterattacks of stick vs. stick (Phan The Con), without explaining the intermediate movements. But the Vietnamese stick goes far beyond these two facets and Master Levet offers us 2 detailed DVDs on all the applications of the numerous intermediate movements of the Stick Quyen. This first volume includes a series of specific stick warming up and bodybuilding exercises, the guard, fundamental principles, stylistic handling of the weapon, defense against disarmament, blocking and dodging, displacements, as well as combat techniques. An original work that shows for the first time the Vietnamese stick in a complete and exhaustive way.

(Tactic) Heihouu... The alteration point Since we began this new phase of our work in Europe, many doubts about terms and techniques have come to us, providing us with a better opportunity to explain ourselves. This week, the doubt comes from a Kenjutsu teacher in Hungary, who studied Bujutsu. His question is whether the correct nomenclature in the application of "Sotto Heihou" is Sotto or "Sottoo". Initially, there are two possibilities that can establish this doubt "ad infinitum": Sottoo (extending the sound "O" at the end of the word) - means fainting. Sotto - It means silently, secretly. The Sotto no Heihou technique, applied within the Kenjutsu, which means the use of the Wakizashi, or Tanto, by means of a distraction after an attack with the Katana, can only refer to a hidden, concealed form of attack. Logically, Sotto is the correct form of sound and nomenclature of this form of Heihou. In the past, Masters referred to this type of form as "SenKon" - "The Soul of War". Viewed in depth, it is the moment in which this term is explained in the overcoming of the death before the enemy. The mind that overcomes danger and seeks in it the opportunity. In this case, in this unique moment you cannot depend on impermanence. We do not know when and where this impermanent life will end. This body is already beyond our control. Life, at the mercy of time, moves without stopping for a single moment. Mushin! The combat that is established by itself!... The interior that manifests itself silently. For scholars, a Heihou is done because it's premeditated, but it's not a way that releases, because it was already seduced and captured during the combat. The mind that makes of the intention the point of attachment, is already seduced. Some also claim that it would be best to use this form without a pre-anticipation, through the wrapping

strategy. However, in this case it would cease to be a Heihou. To be released during combat, there must be no interior, there must be no mind ... and mind is beyond space and time. "The wise achieves wisdom without erudition; he reaches his goal without debating; he identifies things without seeing them; he conquers without intervening. Thus he ends his journey without traveling." (Tao Te King) Another interesting example is the Yukichigai no Heihouu. Used in practically all the arts practiced by the Bugei, this form of Heihou establishes the natural connection with the Sengoku Jidai era, since in its structures of movement, deception favors the margin of victory. In the past, this form of strategy was used with the help of some environment that made possible the confusion of the Uke in front of his attack. That is, the Tori used a wall, a large tree, or even the movement inside some scrub, so that part of his body remained covered. When that was not possible, he established a line of

movements that confused Uke's coordination, causing him to lose himself throughout his movement.
Let's see: Yuki-chigai means getting lost along the way. When Tori used some device like the ones mentioned here, he sought to lead the Uke so that he advanced with the intention of reaching him, and before even completing the movement, Tori executed a small recoil, giving the sensation that he had lost. Then he surprised Uke with an attack. In the case that he had no artifact to resort to and he was forced to deceive Uke, he executed with rapid steps, a lateral shifting in even steps, so that the interruption was executed in an odd number. That is, in the intention of a displacement of six firm steps to the right, as Uke accompanied his movement, he would step back in the fifth step and would advance in a straight line towards the opponent, causing him to inadvertently follow his trajectory, forcing him to turn his body, in order to try to stay face-to-face. This way of moving was trained repeatedly until it seemed natural and did not depend on a specific number of steps. Certainly we can explain that in any movement, truth is relative and never absolute. When the Tori, through his movements, says that there is no movement, it means that the movement is entirely composed of things that are not perceived. Whether or not this movement is understood will depend on many factors. This leads us to the conclusion that it depends on how Uke understands things.
Shizen tradition “Yuki-chigai means getting lost along the way. From the point of view of interdependence, we can always reconcile the two truths: relative and absolute. For this to become possible, Tori must have "Donation". In this case, this movement means not coveting, not being greedy to not precipitate the movement. In strategic terms it is said that not being greedy means not wanting to reach him, drive him like playing a great game. In this strategic context - Yuki-chigai - despite the fact that it's true that "nothing belongs to anyone", it doesn't prevent us from becoming one with the movement of Uke, so that we know the exact moment. No matter how insignificant the moment of altering the steps is - what matters is that the effort is genuine. When we leave the Path toward the Path, we reach the Path. Reaching the Path, the Path is necessarily left to the Path. Just as many war strategies led to the creation of others, to reverse the advantages in a situation of danger, in a concatenation of actions and reactions, only knowledge or experience could be the difference between victory and defeat.
Let's see it through the Yamu-o-enai no heihouu. Yamu-o-enai means the inevitable and represents the strategy that does not allow the opponent's defense. We will analyze it here with the two participants dressed in Yoroi (armor). Tori and Uke are on opposite sides. As they approach, Uke draws the sword and positions himself in Seigan no Kamae.
Shizen tradition “Yamu-o-enai means the inevitable and represents the strategy that does not allow the opponent's defense.

When approaching and establishing a suitable Ma-ai, Tori unseathes in Omote Nuki, seeking to reach Uke's helmet and forcing him to a defense. Certainly, if the attack of the Katana would reach the opponent's helmet it could hardly cause any damage, but this context is part of a strategy to lead Uke to a favorable position. In the Seiteigata, the block is made in Torii no Kamae. The moment the two blades meet, Tori pulls an inverted "Tanto", so that the blade is glued to his forearm and hidden by the armor. In an ascending attack with the left hand that holds the Tanto, he tries to reach the arteries of the armpit or the elbow joint. It is worth remembering that, as Uke is dressed in armor, the attack must be directed to the inside of the arm, where there is no protection. Let's see now, in the case that Tori reaches the armpit: The humerus and scapula are joined by a fibrous capsule and by ligaments that reinforce the capsule (coracohumeral and glenohumeral). The axillary artery is responsible for bringing oxygenated blood to the upper limb, shoulder, and the lateral region of the thorax. In fact, it is the subclavian artery, which changes its name from the lateral margin of the first rib and is called the axillary artery. During its course, the arteries superior thoracic, acromial thoracic, lateral thoracic, subscapular, humerus anterior circumflex and humerus posterior circumflex originate therefrom. After passing through the lower margin of the major round muscle, it's called the branchial artery.
The trauma of the axillary artery is more frequent than that of the subclavian artery, representing around 5 to 10% of vascular traumatisms. In cases of vascular wounds with localized hematomas, there can be found the pseudoaneurysm formation, resulting from partial injury of the vascular wall, with saccular dilatation, or having communication between the walls of the artery and the vein, with formation of arteriovenous fistulas. We can see that only the piercing wouldn't make possible the fading of the opponent. This explains the reason for which the Seiteigata ends with a cut of the Katana. That happens after the using the Tanto. Tori moves away putting the body weight on the hips, contracting the hara - since the Katana is held only by the right hand - and using the hips as an axis of union between the lower and the upper body forces, he presses the weight in the front leg, establishing a cut in Kubi Kesa Giri. It is worth noting that within the label of the Seiteigata, the Chiburi is executed and the Katana is sheathed before the Tanto. To that purpose, Tori uses his forearm to hold firmly the Saya, supporting the Koiguchi in the palm of the hand that holds the Tanto. The thumb directs the Mine of the Katana blade and the fingers hold the Tanto and the Saya, to carry out the Notto. Remember that the Kisaki of the Tanto is turned back, pointing to the elbow and with its Mine placed in the forearm.

You also practice the par ticularly difficult applications of the techniques, independently of the ease in performing them in front of the mirror with the punching bag, or in shadow boxing work. Working with focus-gloves is in fact how we can gauge a student’s personal evolution in the different areas of work that has to be done in order to be successful in any contact sport. So in this way training with equipment is indispensable. Karim Rahhal has had a lot experience with this method of training. His career includes Kickboxing, Savate and Muay Thai and throughout it he has had many relevant experiences, which have given him an extraordinary preparation as a trainer. Training work with gear and equipment is a very important aspect that has a prime position in the ranking of his sophisticated methods of training.

Contact Sports What training tool demands so much concentration, focus and dexterity from beginners, advanced students and professionals alike? The glove is used in European boxing, Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, TKD and in sport Karate and in his JKD the great Bruce Lee himself focused on the importance of training with equipment. Indeed, in places where for economic reasons they have no focus-gloves they look for something to substitute them. In fact in Burmese boxing they hit the soles of old shoes.
Training
Training with gear effective and indispensable In any moder n gym they are different types of gloves for the different forms of training: 1. - The normal glove is approximately 15x25 cm with a 5 cm. absorption area and it usually has an oval form. In Thailand the size of this type of glove is quite a bit smaller. The back of the glove is the part that guarantees a strong grip and avoids injury to the trainer. The padding is very important because it absorbs the force of the impact and protects the hand, but at the same time it has to be fast, so that the trainer can manage it in a flexible and agile way.
“The bag and the gloves are not alternative gear rather they are complementary to each other..”
2. – Work with focus-gloves starts in the beginner’s phase. In this phase the trainer doesn’t move and the student learns how to execute his techniques in a slow and controlled way. Then the same combinations are connected but this time the instructor moves in a continuous way. At the next level speed and frequency are increased. The trainer simulates the movements of an opponent to give the student the sensation of a real combat since this is the final objective of all training with gear.
3. – The forearm shield measures approximately 35x18x10 cm. and on the top part there are knots that keep this tool very firmly in place against powerful techniques like leg attacks or any kind of kick. If two shields are used at the same time you have enough protection to practice the incredible Middle-Kicks. This shield is also used for other boxing techniques:
• Fist techniques • Foot and leg techniques • Combinations of both • Coordination and automation of the movements In the May Thai school, sparring with focus-gloves is done for 5 to 15 rounds and basic automatic preparation is given in

speed, hands and leg strikes and above all coordination. 4. - The big shield for kick techniques measures approximately 75x35x15 cm. and it also has knots that secure it in place. Karim Rahhal prefers hard foam padding to air padding (although this weighs less), because in this way there is more resistance for the student and the sensation is more realistic. You can use this shield for almost any type of kick and if you keep it low then you can practice intensively and combine any type of middle kicks. 5. - The "stomach shield" is a Thai invention. It is a large and strong padding that protects the upper and lower abdomen. It is worn like a belt and closes at the back of the trunk. Its best use is for combinations of hand and leg techniques together with knee strikes and hooks to the body. It is also used for front kicks. A particularly good form of training is the combination of the forearm shield together with the "stomach shield", because this way strong kicks can be redirected with the arms toward the abdominal area or chest. With all these possibilities you can do a complete training session. Karim Rahhal does the following: • Deep warm-up • 5x3 minutes of focus-gloves(1 minute’s rest) • 3x3 forearm shield (1 minute’s rest)
Training • 2x3 minutes of sparring with the glove or forearm shield; Thai-boxers also use the stomach shield (1 minute’s rest) • One variation that increases power is training with boxing gloves (12-16 oz.) with a reduced number of techniques so that they can be applied quickly and precisely. • Other variations are the coordination of sight and hand that can be practiced with any type of combination of fist and kick technique. We are proud to present you the following interview with Master Karim Rahhal, a true master teacher. BUDO INTERNATIONAL: Karim, you have extraordinary fame as a trainer of champions at the highest level, and people always talk about your excellent work with gear. How and where did you train for this? Karim Rahhal: In my country, Morocco. I was always fascinated with Kickboxing and my trainer, Mohammed El Makrum, initiated me into this form of training. From the very beginning I was fascinated by this real and effective method, and all my titles – right up to the European championship and the world games are directly related to this form. B.I.: From a trainer’s perspective what is your opinion today of the importance of training with equipment? KR: I think it’s indispensable, independent of the fighter’s level, whether he is a beginner who is still learning the basic techniques, or a champion training and polishing his techniques to perfect his skills. As trainer I also see an important aspect with reg ard t o s po rt’s medicine, where lig ament s and jo ints are put under les s
pressure than, for example, in shadow boxing. It is very important that the techniques don't end up in a vacuum. B.I.: It seems clear that for you working with equipment is "the high school" of Kick and Thai-Boxing. But what do you think of it in daily practice in the gyms, especially in Germany? Is it being done properly?
KR: It’s true that especially in poor countries people are passionately training with focus-gloves. I would love to see this same passion in contact sports in Germany. It seems to me that this way of preparing athletes is not adequate here. Many trainers are not capable of, or they don't want to face, this kind of work that needs special mental and physical skills. However, I want to make it clear, in Germany there are many trainers that
Training
apply the equipment at a very high level, like Detlef TĂźrnau, Ralf KĂźnzler, JĂźrgen Lutz and many others... B.I.: You are talking about an almost universal kind of training with gloves and so the question arises why include the punch-bag, for example? KR: I realize your question is rhetorical, but there is no doubt that the punch-bag is an essential tool. The bag and the gloves are not alter native gear rather they are complementary to each other. The bag is something fixed and static, and this is very useful for a lot of important work. The trainer depends a great deal on the focus-gloves which are moveable and not fixed because there are always some surprising movements. In this way you can train in a dynamic way and approximate reality more closely. B.I: It seems that for you training with gear is very close to reality and in reality there are always risks. What should we do to avoid injuries? KR: This is the work of the trainer. You have to have good concentration, good eyesight and precise timing. The
Contact Sports
Contact Sports athlete has to trust his teacher 100%, because if not, he can never apply his techniques with full contact. If you are wearing a badly fitted shield, you may be struck by a kick or a blow and receive serious injuries. On the other hand, the trainer should not stop or slow down attacks too soon or apply more strength in comparison to his student. You have to go through the whole thing. It is also fatal when the instructor asks for predetermined combinations and then he doesn't react in an appropriate way! In such situations some impressive knockouts have taken place.
• Gymnastics and stretching • Techniques (shadow, kicks) • Bag • Gloves • Sparring Basic training and stations These elements are not arbitrary, rather they are complementary, that is to say, one element depends on and needs the another, so one should not be neglected in favor of the other. The proposed objective is reached when attention is paid to this cycle and you have to repeat it frequently.
B.I: If somebody has the luck to train with a good instructor, how should a complete training program for Kick or Thai boxing be structured? KR: Well, personally, I pay attention to the following six elements:
B.I.: Good, now we understand why training with equipment is so important and that it is not only your own personal position but that a general concept also exists. Thank you and we wish you every success in your career as trainer to champions.
Krav Maga Israeli Survival System: the new Krav Maga frontier. After the success of his first DVD, Grandmaster Marco Morabito appears unprecedented in Budo International with a DVD dedicated to weapons: Morabito knowledge in both civil and military defense fields intertwines in an explosive mixture of technology and innovation. Nothing is left to chance and there are no secrets: with "experimentalis cognitio", the most common armed attacks are carefully examined paying utmost attention to every single detail. Diverse techniques with the most common weapons are analyzed, always bearing in mind that there is no such thing as a "universal pattern of aggression": the kinds of attacks are unlimited and so are the means of defense. Technique is only the basis of study to acquire and develop fluency and conscience of the movement, but the aim is that of making our defense instinctive thus shortening the time of reaction. As on the ring, we will never have the mathematical certainty of winning the bout, but we can greatly increase our chances of emerging victorious: "He who fights risks to lose, he who doesn't fight has already lost." Morabito, with his Israeli Krav Maga Survival System wants to break with the patterns and show the public something totally new, far from the regular old-fashioned techniques, emulated for decades. On this DVD, technique melts with experience and everything acquires clear and definite contours. Nothing is left at random and the most common mistakes are unmasked and analyzed. In the Israeli Krav Maga Survival System you will find an exceptional and authentic new method of self-defense.

Practicing martial arts and combat sports is a way of life that enables us, with perseverance, to get to know ourselves, and become a better person. Not a better person technically and in fighting, but better as a human being. Unfortunately, more and more practitioners, or even teachers and martial arts or combat sports masters, forget this notion of becoming better to do good things around them, through compassion, respect and love for others.
Learning and showing respect and love instead of hate, through martial arts
Jeet Kune Do “A lot of people only see in our disciplines a way to learn to defend themselves, instead of a way to improve themselves, in order to avoid all confrontations as far as possible.
A
lot of people only see in our disciplines a way to lear n to defend themselves, instead of a way to improve themselves, in order to avoid all confrontations as far as possible. Is not it true that every avoided fight is won by non-violence? Sometimes it is, of course, impossible to avoid violence but it must be absolutely necessary. However, we must always do everything we can in order to avoid a confrontation : our attitude while being attacked is often decisive. Indeed, if we appear aggressive, it will be almost impossible to avoid the physical contact. Having respect for someone can usually defuse tension and conflict. Unfortunately, we see more and more practitioners with warrior attitude, taught supposedly to dissuade the aggressor. It can sometimes work, actually, but in most cases of aggression, the aggressor(s) are extremely determined and aggressive; hence, if we reflect an aggressive image and a nonchalant attitude, it will inevitably result by the physical confrontation. Furthermore, when these people engage the physical contact, they will be even more violent, and the physical consequences will be even more serious. On the other hand, most practitioners who adopt these warrior attitudes are not really warriors. They are simply honest citizens in peace, practicing for their leisure a discipline that may allow them to potentially defend
themselves, but without an absolute certainty of results. We must never forget that, despite all the training, we will develop numerous characteristics that will make us more “equipped than a non-practitioner, but we should remember that in a real situation, fear can also paralyze us, and make us unable to respond. If, before the physical aggression, the practitioner pretended to be a warrior with disrespect, aggressivity and hate for the aggressor(s), then he will be in serious troubles. A lot of teachers are now in a commercial approach, promising the earth to their students, by promising

implicitly invincibility, being untouchable, because the practiced discipline is infallible. Yet, no one is invincible and untouchable. During exchanges of punches, everybody gets strikes, except if we intercept the attack at the beginning or if we hit first, but in this case, we become the aggressor. But, let’s not forget that intercepting at the beginning of the action is very hard and uncertain, so we should be conscious that while aggression, the practitioner will get strikes, that can make him doubt, that can make him paralyzed, or that can even put him out of action. For these reasons, showing respect and love around one is important and is, in my opinion, a part of the main values of the martial practice and of the philosophy taught in our disciplines. Indeed, the practice should lead us to get to know ourselves inwardly and honestly. We learn to know what is pain while we train, and to respect it; which will make us choose not to use pain on people without acceptable reason. On the other hand, when we practice, we don’t feel hate toward our partner, who helps us to progress, and yet, this partner hits us at every session. However, we know it’s a part of our progress and our training. Unfortunately, a lot of people forget this outside of the dojo: they respect every rule during their practice, but forget everything when it’s over. Of course, in the street, there are no rules while aggression, but what I mean here is that if we feel hate, it distorts our lucidity, our
judgement and especially our efficiency. Who, while his first training, didn’t make the mistake to rush at his partner while sparring, and has been beaten up as a result of forgetting his guard, which give reckless opening (like a punch in the liver for example)? When we hate someone, we don’t think anymore, and we want to hurt him so much that we are not conscious of anything anymore ; we can be hurt, or killed, or we can kill the aggressor without realising it, with the extreme violence of uncontrolled punches.
The control of oneself, respect, friendship, giving a positive image of the club and of the teacher, are they not the first rules in training centers? All those rules are often forgotten in the street, they don’t respect anyone, pretend to be superior to others and have an aggressive attitude with their look or posture toward people around them. They put themselves in danger, because most of the time, the more the practitioner pretends to be a warrior in his daily life, the more he knows that it comes from the fact that he is playing a game, because he is actually fearful. His attitude will harm him more than dissuade people around him. Martial Arts are so much educational, they enable us to physically, mentally and spiritually surpass ourselves. Why wouldn’t we apply what is transmitted while we train, by respecting people around us, by giving love to our fellow beings instead of behaving like fake warriors who transmit an absolutely negative image, and opposite to the martial arts philosophy? Shaolin monks have no aggressivity toward others, they practice and pray, they don’t seek confrontation, because they are in peace inside of their bodies. Is this not the real defence weapon taught in our disciplines? Is it really necessary to want to
destroy everybody, to confront others, to prove that we are better or that our school or martial system is superior to others? When I see all the love taught by Sifu Dan Inosanto through the disciplines he teaches us, I know the answer. If there was one thing I had to remember from Sifu Dan, it would be
this love, this respect for others, and this reject of hate. Never use violence, except in case of absolute necessity and even in this case, disrespect and hate won’t make one win more easily the fight, but on the contrary, will complicate and make one’s survival impossible. Once again, the teacher’s role is essential in this process.
“The control of oneself, respect, friendship, giving a positive image of the club and of the teacher, are they not the first rules in training centers?
Sifu Alfred Johannes Neudorfer and Sifu Rosa Ferrante Bannera, founders of Wing Tsun Universe - WTU, a movement which characterizes not by the use of techniques, but of qualities, exchanges, principles and concepts of movement - focus their first DVD in Siu Nim Tao (SNT) or "9 ways". The SNT is the basis of Wing Tsun, Wing Chun and WTU. The understanding thereof is the basic condition for everything that comes after, because if you observe the way people perform the sequences of this movement, you can easily deduce what they will be able to do. If something is wrong with the movement, everything the practitioner will later develop will be erroneous. WTU movements (forms) involve inherent functions from which can derive applications. The significance of the primary movements makes them derive in other movements and to generate applications based on the principles and interactions that help to their understanding. The WTU also incorporates an extra "set" its founders considered necessary due to the current circumstances. The DVD includes the Movement (form) Siu Nim Tao, its 9 sequences and applications, sequences 1 to 3 of the first movement with a training partner (Chi Sao) and a revealing interview with the founders of the WTU.

Combat Hapkido
Grand Masters MYTHS & URBAN LEGENDS by Grandmaster John Pellegrini
To say that when I was a teen-ager growing up in Italy in the early 1960s, Martial Arts were not popular would be a great understatement. There were virtually no Gymnasiums, Academies, Clubs and certainly no Martial Arts School operating as a business. Videotapes (the old VHS/PAL) and, of course, DVDs, had not been invented. There were no Martial Arts magazines (Black Belt magazine began publication in the USA in June 1961, but was not available in Italy) and very few books (mostly on Judo). Martial Arts films would not reach worldwide audiences until the early 1970s. And, hard to believe, there was no Internet. When it came to Martial Arts, getting accurate information, news of current events or a serious education was extremely hard (in many areas, virtually impossible). Among the many friends from school and the neighborhood that I socialized with only two had any “knowledge” of Martial Arts and only one of them had actually trained in Judo at a Government Sports facility. I accompanied him for a few classes, decided that I did not like it and never went back. (A few years later, it was training in “Hand-to-Hand Combat” while in the Military, that ignited my lifelong passion for the Arts). ut it was at that time, while a clueless teen-ager, that I heard the first of many “myths” connected to the Martial Arts. I was informed by a friend that every Black Belt had to “register” their hands and feet as “deadly weapons” with the local Police Department. He told me that in the most serious tone, without a hint of humor or incredulity. And I believed it! Such were the times, unlike today when a quick Internet search would reveal what a stupid and totally fake story it really is. By the time I started serious training in the early 1970s in the USA, I no longer believed the story and had realized that it was nothing more than one of those “urban legends” that had spread so widely and endured for so long that they become “facts” believed by millions of people. Over the years, I heard or read several other Martial Arts stories presented as “facts”. Impossible feats of breaking; delayed (sometimes by weeks!) organ failure due to the effects of Dim Mak (death touch); Secret (and illegal!) schools of Ninjutsu where you learn how to become a Ninja assassin (but, if they are secret, why are they advertising in the phone book?); incredible feats of levitation and even flying; catching bullets and arrows, etc.. Most of those stories are simply myths and most of those superhuman feats involve tricks and deception as in a Las Vegas Magic Show. Unfortunately, in my opinion, those fake stories and demonstrations damage the image of real Martial Arts, producing false expectations, fear or ridicule in the public at large. Not a good thing for our business. But thankfully, we live in the “information age” and, with a little diligent research, we can always find the truth about any story and the scientific reality behind any superhuman exhibition. So, imagine my surprise when I was informed that the oldest and
B
Grand Masters most ridiculous of those Martial Arts myths is actually…. TRUE! To explain that shocking discovery, a little background information is necessary and we must fast-forward to 2014. At that time, one of our Combat Hapkido students, a Supervisor Agent of the FBI (many of them train in our system) was reassigned from Virginia to the island of Guam, a US Territory in Micronesia (in the Western Pacific ocean) with a population of about 170.000. After he had been stationed there for a few months, he contacted my office to share with me the incredible law in existence in Guam that I reprint here verbatim: Guam Code 6200: “Any person who is an expert in the art of karate or judo, or any similar physical art in which the hands and feet are used as deadly weapons, is required to register with the Department of Revenue and Taxation”. There it was…the urban legend that, as a young, naïve teenager, I believed to be true but than, later in life, found out to be
Combat Hapkido
“Secret (and illegal!) schools of Ninjutsu where you learn how to become a Ninja assassin (but, if they are secret, why are they advertising in the phone book?)
Grand Masters a silly myth…it’s true, at least in one place in the World. One intriguing difference, however, between the old myth and the Guam law is that instead of Registering with the Police, you must do so with the Tax Authority (which, in most places around the World, have more power and are more feared than the Police)…Does it make you wonder what their real agenda is? The Code (62104) continues by defining legally who is an “expert”: “A karate or judo expert required to register by the provisions of this Chapter shell be a person trained in the arts of karate, judo or other handto-hand fighting technique, whereby the hands, feet or other parts of the body are used as weapons, who shell have completed at least one level of training therein and shell have been issued a belt or other symbol showing proficiency in such art.” So, according to this law, if you are a yellow belt (“at least one level of training”) who headbutts (“or other parts of the body”) someone in a fight, you are an “expert” and you better have your Tax Registration or you’ll be in serious trouble. This surreal law continues in Chapter 62106 by stating what will happen to you if you actually use any Martial Art technique: “Any registered karate or judo expert who thereafter is charged with having used his art in a physical assault on some other person, shell upon conviction thereof, be deemed guilty of aggravated assault”. From this, we are to understand that 1)since it says “used HIS art”, the law does not apply to women; 2) by qualifying “assault on some other PERSON” it is legal to use martial arts techniques on farm animals and pets. And further, does that mean that ONLY “registered karate or judo expert” will be guilty of “aggravated assault”? That would seem to be an incentive NOT to register!
Combat Hapkido “Reading (several times) the email I received from FBI student, I felt like I was watching an episode of The Twilight Zone (the popular TV series that aired from 1959 to 1964) and I didn’t know if I should laugh, be angry or just dumfounded.”
Grand Masters So, what happens if a 300 lbs. street-fighter, with NO karate or judo training, beats someone into a coma with hands and feet, does he get a pass on the “aggravated” part of the charge? And he is also clearly exempt from any his Tax obligation! And, on a serious note, a most disturbing aspect of this absurd law is that it makes absolutely no mention of exceptions for the use of martial arts techniques in legitimate Self-Defense situations. Reading (several times) the email I received from FBI student, I felt like I was watching an episode of The Twilight Zone (the popular TV series that aired from 1959 to 1964) and I didn’t know if I should laugh, be angry or just dumfounded. The story would be comical if it wasn’t true but, sadly, it is true. In fact, it was even featured in an article in the Washington Post in March 2014. The first lesson we can derive from all this is: Never take your freedom for granted! Governments are always looking to expand their power and increase control of every aspect of your life with laws, regulations and taxation. The second is that the next time you hear what appears to be an urban legend or suspect that a story is really a myth, don’t be too quick to dismiss it… it may be true…somewhere.
“Never take your freedom for granted! Governments are always looking to expand their power and increase control of every aspect of your life with laws, regulations and taxation.”
Keysi
Small bottles, great messages When the world of Martial Arts became visible in Europe, the sensation was that of the discovery of an ocean pushing small bottles with great messages; today thousands of bottles keep arriving but with no message. Keysi, Method and technique You can't, we can't give up technique. Techniques are useful because they help us recognize our body mechanics, our body levers, and our center of gravity. Techniques teach us to recognize our body, its abilities and its weaknesses. This knowledge will be our working tools and techniques will be the bridge between our mind and our body. With a good method and a correct technical workout based on the person, you can get to achieve a good technical level. Perhaps you could even reach a level that you would never have achieved by other means in a long time; an incorrect technical job has major consequences. In Keysi, do all techniques serve? No, not all techniques serve. A certain technique will be very useful for a certain
development, but the wrong technique can also be an obstacle. This will only depend on the goal or goals we are to achieve. A Keysi Instructor will always bear in mind the technique, since it is our transmission bridge and the recognition of our physical body, but it will also be a way to enjoy doing exercise. A student needs technique because he is not yet aware, and the comprehension that is to come is far away, because he is still thinking about technique; he needs this development time to create a bridge between being conscious and the body expression; that's what technique is for. At first it seems to us that technique is our expression, but that is a false perception; it not only serves knowing the technique, time is also necessary to reach that moment in which the body abandons the technique and it's only expression; of course, this only will happen after a tremendous physical and introspection workout, and then the technique will be the bridge that will connect to reach the expression. The capacity of observation is the quality of being aware and being alert. This is Keysi. It's not about the action itself, but the quality that you print to the action; the technique makes you aware of each one of these movements, making all your body mechanics get implied in each gesture. It teaches you to be an observer of your body and little by little mind and body will

create a close relationship building that bridge. Technique helps us to reach our goal, but we mustn't forget that technique is not the goal. When do you know that you have reached your goal? You know that you have hit your target when expressing yourself does not require any effort. In Keysi we like to have fun during the class, it's a natural way to relax enjoying the class, maintaining our identity, being aware at all times of the reason of what is done and why it is done, with clear development objectives, since the expression cannot occur through the effort: if there is tension there is no relaxation and tension becomes barriers. Keysi seems to be very simple. It seems to be very simple and it is very simple, but as I said before, we have to work. You can observe the

Keysi movements of Keysi and think that with the experience that you have, putting your hands on your head and do as if you were washing your hair is not that complicated. Then you think how something so simple can help you. The personal ego will say that there's nothing you can learn in there. The ego always looks for difficult things, because if something is difficult there is a challenge and if you have to overcome a difficulty then you feel that you get a benefit. The greater the difficulty the greater the attraction. But putting your hands on your head will not serve you much if you don't know what to do; a mixture of techniques of different styles whose foundations and functionality are different, will never bring about good consequences. Movements in Keysi are structured from a before, a during and an after, a work developed through the mind, with a consequence: the physical expression in the most brutal recreations imagined. If you believed Keysi was easy, and I assure you it is but only if you see it from within you, adopting the positions of Keysi does not solve the situation if you do not know anything of the mind. If you want a real challenge, search less in your external self and investigate more in your inner self. Keysi's techniques rely on a study based on quantum mechanics to come to a deep knowledge with our mind, according to a long experimentation and analysis of results and consequences in its entire development.

As we have documented over the past 6 years, Kyusho translates as "Vital Point" and is a study of the human condition and it's frailties. Although similar in appearance to the ancient acupuncture and pressure point massage methods, the Kyusho method can also deal with immediacy for certain trauma as well as easily rid the body of common ailments. Within seconds we canm begin to relax and ease the pain associated with headaches, backaches, muscle and internal cramps, hiccups, asthma, nausea, sinus congestion and so many more common maladies both of natural causes as well as trauma inflicted. This is all performed quickly and efficiently without expensive pills or drugs that can take 20 minutes or more to work or have serious side effects on other organs or body functions. The ramifications are enormous and we believe to be of such worth for continued research and societal benefit. This type of holistic approach has been effective for many thousands of years in cultures throughout the world and we have added even more possibility and purpose to it for you. Once you learn these simple methods of Kyusho First Aide, you too can help your family and friends with many of these common ailments we each suffer through. Let this serve as an historical record of how these methods developed and the other health possibilities they hold for day-to-day living. However it is not the full curriculum, as one would expect, the depth and intricacies can only be conveyed with hands on application and practice under the watchful eye of an instructor. The consistent practice of these methods will not only increase your abilities to relieve the practiced formulas, but also instruct you in the intuitive application of many other health issues. They should not be considered standalone formulas, but rather ways to correct certain problems within the human body based on the foundation presented.

“In my opinion, in recent years WingTsun practitioners have focused too much on the study of programs and "counterprograms", sections, exams and other issues that have little to do with training.
Taows Academy Designing logical workouts... If we want to consider a real evolution in our combat system, we must choose between two options: 1) Clone the training system we learned. 2) Determine goals and adapt the training plan to the goal we want to achieve. Obviously I prefer the SECOND option and I hope you can understand my way of teaching and follow my reasoning in this month’s lines...
hen we talk about combat we have to take into account two parts: us and the enemy. If we think about our training, we will agree that everything needs to be focused in a direct relation to our potential enemies. If we look in perspective and with clear objectives the combat and those enemies we must ask ourselves. Where can we focus our attack zones in real combat? There are two areas of our body that are impossible to harden: the eyes and the trachea. Of course, some people are more resistant / pain tolerant by nature, but in any case, the rest of the body can become hardened, or what is the same, we can achieve that when we are hit, the pain doesn't prevent us from continuing to fight or trying to impose our own strategy of combat. But, there's no way you can harden those two areas. Neither the toughest of MMA fighters nor the street fighter, battle-tested in a thousand combats, want to
W
WingTsun keep fighting when they get a big pressure on their eyes. It's a blow that leaves the human being inoperative. For many reasons. The eyes are not protected by muscles or bones. Just a light layer of skin and blood capillaries protect the eyeball. In addition, when "touched", the natural mechanism of protection of the human being, makes it cry incessantly to cleanse and heal the possible wounds produced by the "aggression." To attack these targets we must take into account an important element: it takes a very refined technique to be able to hit an opponent in those areas. In the case of the trachea, traumatism in the tracheal area blocks the human being's air supply. It is very traumatic and completely disables the aggressor. These two points are the main targets of 90 % of WingTsun attacks at the advanced level. Sometimes I am surprised at the subtlety with which the blows of the advanced sections are designed. It is a thorough study of the human anatomy, a survey of the knowledge of man's vulnerabilities, but also a deep review of the perfect use of the human biomechanics so as to be able to hit those areas. There is certainly much to practice in these advanced programs. In order to understand the zones and the techniques to attack these zones we must fully acquaint ourselves with the techniques of our style and the background behind them. In this case, we can study in depth the sections of the Biu Jee Tao. These techniques show us an excellent range of attacks on these areas and how to reach them and be out of the line of pressure when
Taows Academy attacking the adversary. In addition, the ideas contained in these forms will show us how to continue attacking the enemy even if we are out of balance or pressured by the adversary. The concept of keep ATTACKING is very important despite being pressured. Let us think that the very idiosyncrasy of WingTsun shows us the need to learn to attack ... not to defend. For this reason, I find it very odd that thousands of hours of training time are invested in the use of "defenses", when in our system, the "defense" itself simply DOES NOT EXIST... For some reason, Bruce Lee called his system "Jee Kune Do" (The Path of the Fist that INTERCEPTS) In my opinion, what a WingTsun practitioner must train throughout his life is how to attack the adversary... never "how to defend himself" from the attacks of the adversary. Or at least, not to focus on the defense as a valid strategy to face a stronger and stouter enemy (almost all cases in actual combat). Sometimes I joke with my pupils and present them an imaginary situation in which I pose something like this:
“There are two areas of our body that are impossible to harden: the eyes and the trachea.
WingTsun
“In my opinion, what a WingTsun practitioner must train throughout his life is how to attack the adversary.
Taows Academy "...there is a hitting weapon and you have to choose between attacking with it or trying to defend yourself from the adversary who will use the weapon ... what do you prefer? Defend or attack first? One hundred percent of those questioned, respond among smiles: ATTACK!!! There you go! ... Let us then practice in the line of what we want to achieve. Perhaps the next question should be: How do you learn to attack? Defending? I don't think so. Yeah, I could use many similar examples to convey the idea that the main workout of our style should be focused on learning how to attack ... Nonetheless we must agree on the importance of developing training systems that teach us to attack properly: at the right distance, with power, speed and precision.
WingTsun After this long reflection, let me return to the thought that I launched at the beginning of this month's article ... If you have carefully followed the thread, you will be able to recognize the PHASES I have described: 1) Determine Objectives 2) Study our strengths and weaknesses 3) Study the enemy 4) Look for the techniques and tactics offered by the Wing Tsun Kuen style 5) Design exercises to achieve those goals
When we talk about DESIGNING logical Training Systems we refer to that... In my opinion, in recent years WingTsun practitioners have focused too much on the study of programs and "counterprograms", sections, exams and other issues that have little to do with training. They have focused too much on accumulating techniques and more techniques without a clear goal. Here we have an absolutely clear objective: we must to improve our attacks so that, from the mobility, we can obtain focusing, power, speed and precision. In any area of training or learning there must always be a very clear line of reasoning. A "where do we come from" and a "where do we want to go". Once these guidelines are clear to us, we can consider what will be the itinerary or the ways of travelling... In the WingTsun of twenty years ago, that was absolutely clear. The most illustrious practitioners of this system faced hundreds of adversaries using a very simple and very clear strategy: If he enters my distance, I advance with all the decision of the world and I beat endlessly to that adversary that is trying to invade my territory .... It may not be the best plan in the world ... but it is a principle. It's a clear, sharp
“When we talk about combat we have to take into account two parts: us and the enemy.
WingTsun and simple plan: AND IT WORKS!!! Or at least, it has worked for many years. Undoubtedly, critics and detractors of this system will come again with their "yes, but..." and all that, but I don't think anybody can denay the forcefulness and efficiency with which the Wing Tsun system opened way itself in Europe, just over twenty years ago now.... Although time has passed, foes have also changed... so we have two options: - Live on the "past glories". - Create systems that make our system evolve. Which one to choose? To me it's very clear... Let us walk!! Sifu Salvador Sรกnchez TAOWS Academy

This DVD is the result promoted by the Spanish subsidiary of the Zen Nihon Toyama-Ryu Iaido Renmei (ZNTIR - Spain Branch), to publicize the technical content of the ToyamaRyu style as practiced in the ZNTIR Honbu Dojo in Machida, Tokyo, unchanged, with no alterations. The loyalty of the program is such that is its president and maximum technical manager, Yoshitoki Hataya Sensei, who, accompanied by some members, executes personally the entire compendium of the current style program. In him you can find the basic structure of the methodology that is applied, from the coded exercises of warming up and preparation and through the cutting exercises; the guards; the school Katas, including those corresponding to the Toyama Army Academy, the Gunto Soho and its explanation; work in pairs, both in Kumitachi and Gekken Kumitachi, and the cornerstone on which the Toyama-Ryu is based, i.e., Tameshigiri or cutting exercises on a real target. Zen Nihon Toyama-Ryu IaiDo Renmei (ZNTIR) is the body that currently - once reviewed and adapted the concepts and methodology of a school that comes from a method of actual combat intends to maintain alive this tradition and the original forms through a system that unifies body, mind and spirit in a realistic and effective way. Thanks to the commitment of a few graduates of the Toyama Army Academy (Rikugun Toyama Gakko), who continued secretly keeping alive the art until the lifting of the bans and the return of sovereignty to the Japanese people, today can learn a fencing style framed among the current schools of Iai-Do. This is a meticulous DVD in different languages, which proves to be a valuable source for researchers and practitioners of Japanese sword, and for martial artists in general or interested in the history of Japan and its last world war. It's a real stroke of luck being able to observe the techniques it contains, and at least for serious researchers, is well worth having it in your video library. We practitioners of the style want to share loyally the knowledge of our Japanese fencing school, in the hope that at the same time, the own inter nal values of those armed men impregnate the new generations and allow to glimpse a revulsive, in a traditionally way very different from the current approach to combat disciplines of Japanese origin. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
VACIRCA BROTHERS JIU-JITSU The “re-invention” of the Jiu-Jitsu principles (part 1) The basic principle: Patience In our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the "beginning" of the fight has something to do with preparation rather than "conclusion". A hasty and unprepared attack has very little effect, and in the end, it can result in a lost. Therefore "patience" is one of the most important principles of the Gracie method. The Jiu-Jitsuka learns to focus on healthy development. This is true for all areas of the Jiu-Jitsu, whether mental, physical or human, whether it be ethics, respect, courage, willingness, proper dealing, friendship, etc. In a fight, the "initial phase" is, of course, a very important part of the whole, and here, too, is an important rule which my teacher, Professor Pedro Hemetério, gave me: "Who has the control of the center (of the opponent) and can adapt flexibly and free of emotions, with appropriate use of energy, has the Fight already halfway won." © 2016 Franco Vacirca, Sandra Nagel © pictures by Alicia Fröhlich
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu To be positioned correctly is certainly one of the most important combat tactics. You should be able to keep the pressure against the opponent, but without wasting your own physical strength and energy. One should always keep enough space to adapt flexibly and appropriately to the situation. During the entire time, and in particularly at the beginning, it is important to deal sparingly with its attacks. An incorrect attack will offer to your opponent a variety of countertechnique or possibilities. The clever Jiu-Jitsuka, with years of experience and self-development, learns to read his opponent well and intercept his moves. Beginners often make the mistake of attacking their opponents right from the start. This can be used by an experienced Jiu-Jitsuka against you, to make you powerless within seconds. Beginners are very "square", so their attacks can often be seen from a distance. In contrast to an experienced Jiu-Jitsuka, who can use the techniques in a smooth and very supple form. The goal of each beginner should be that he/she learns to achieve this "rounding" in the application of the techniques. However, this is easier said than done, because for this, enough training time - for some months - should be spend on a single technique or movement. In our Jiu-Jitsu training drilling the techniques, before the use in free sparring, plays also an important role, because the Jiu-Jitsukas learns to (muscle) memorize the movement. The intensive and very technical drilling of individual techniques, or of short contiguous series of techniques (combinations), improves the flow and serves to develop a natural flow. The drilling also helps especially the more passive Jiu-Jitsu fighters, which are often forced by their passive role, to take a more “unconservative” role. In Jiu-Jitsu, we have nothing against a passive role; on the contrary, it could even be a life-retreat.
“One of the most common mistakes in the practice of timing is that the timing is not alone, but is closely related to what is called "Kuzushi" (in Japanese), namely to get the opponent out of balance.”
The basic principle: Timing One of the most common mistakes in the practice of timing is that the timing is not alone, but is closely related to what is called "Kuzushi" (in Japanese), namely to get the opponent out of balance. Most martial artists know the word Kuzushi from Judo, Aikido, etc., since here the "breaking" of the opposing balance before the actual action (throw) is very important to bring the enemy down efficiently. Kuzushi is also important on the ground fighting and everyone who is involved in ground fighting is aware of this, because whoever believes here to attack the enemy from a fixed position without getting his opponent out of balance, does not know much about advanced ground work. Timing also requires us to be in the right place at the right moment. Often it is also said that the faster will win. Instead, I would rather use the term "natural movement flow", because I can explain this Jiu-Jitsu principle better. Quickness sounds to me as if I would simply “run” or to be fast to do the movement. But I rather behave as if I had to make a short and precise “sprint” at the right moment. So, what moves us first? Is it the thought or feeling? Probably as in real-life a combination of both. One often underestimates the mental aspect in two-combat. In fact, the true Grandmasters have also dealt
“To be positioned correctly is certainly one of the most important combat tactics.”
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu very intensively with our Jiu-Jitsu. Speed can be used to make a single technique fast, but the “natural flow of movement” is used to unite the thought and movement and implement it at the right moment. Timing also has something to do with "anticipation" in Jiu-Jitsu, so to be able to recognize the next action of the opponent. One is therefore compelled to "see" around itself to prevent or counter possible options and counteractions. The feeling of serenity and equilibrium, the long-standing experience, coincides with the expectation of our action. A false security can and will lead us to make the wrong decision at a good timing. Therefore, one can say here again that an experienced Jiu-Jitsuka will rarely make a closing technique in the first 30 seconds of a fight, but will rather study the movement of the opponent to find a favorable position for him before he goes to final action. This crucial time serves the result and determines success or failure of our action. When practicing, and improving the timing, you should not focus too much on the "anticipation" of our success. Anyone watching the situation calmly and quietly will probably recognize what the opponent is thinking and trying. Anyone who is concerned with the timing, also exerts his advanced tactics, so also think of creating different options. In a real fight, you should limit your own risky chances to better understand the opposing possibilities. In a Randori, you can also live out these risky behaviors quietly and face the training partner more calmly. The training of the timing is therefore very closely linked to how you are mentally and emotionally prepared. It is therefore required to keep one's own view open and to seek options, to rely on the feeling and not to deal with the anticipation that a conclusion could succeed, but rather by limiting one's own risk and that Opposing movements. If this plan works, then we should be now on the right place at the right time, and our final action should end up successfully. Those who sharpen their senses in Jiu-Jitsu are more likely to achieve this phase, regardless of the physical and athletic attributes and whether they are men or women. The used movement, whether it is an attack or a defense, becomes an intuitive measure and therefore the desired goal is achieved. If one learns to work on
his timing, one improves many aspects of his own Jiu-Jitsu. Instead of being in a bubble and having a tunnel view, our Jiu-Jitsu becomes more spontaneous and efficient.
The Jiu-Jitsu basic principle: Precision How to achieve precision in a natural way? Probably by regularly and consistently participating in the training, which for many can be a problem. Most of the Jiu-Jitsu beginners are so euphoric in the training that they appear almost every night in the Academy. After a while, in various cases between six to eight months, the Beginner student ends up to come even regularly twice a week. To students should be reminded that regular training is better then, to giving it all in the beginning and ending having nothing on the end. By practicing precision, we are always “falling” back down to the ground from our clouds of success and reminded that there is always work to improve ourselves. Working on precision is not an easy task. Achieving precision requires a lot of work and time. Often you are pulled away from the actual path and you think you have found the one or the other abbreviation, but then you notice again that they were not.
The Adaptation and Connection Theory I often talked to Professor Pedro about the "adaptation and connection theory" which states that if you use 80% of your weight against your opponent, you are more likely to come to a Submission. The 80% should not be taken literally, but it means that the connection is extremely important in Jiu-Jitsu, because you feel how the opponent is behaving. He also said time and again that without a real connection between the fighters, no precise technique could arise. Whoever wants to achieve the highest precision in Jiu-Jitsu should first understand that it is not the actual submission (conclusion), but how to position itself. Let's take a few techniques briefly as an example: - One of the first techniques I learned from the Gracie’s had been the cross-choke. One of the
“A technique should be applied at every level of performance, regardless of the level of a student”
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu details taught was, a) that this strangulation technique was made by the correct use of my wrists and not by pulling the kimono collar, b) that I had to keep my hips on the guard position not straight, but slightly twisted so I could be closer to my opponent, and c) that the control of the body of the opponent comes through my legs and hip. - In over 80% of the fights you will have in Jiu-Jitsu, several times your opponent in your guard or vise-versa. It is not easy for many to pass the guard position. But let me ask you, who told you, that you must pass the Guard always? Professor Pedro give great emphasis on keeping the Guard. He taught me, not to force to escape the guard position, but rather to wait for the right moment to do so. So also, here one should learn to read between the lines ...one makes the (strong) opponent take the first step and then counters him with less force, but precise and with tenacity. - If you are down and the opponent is on the mount position, you should try to make the opponent feel unstable, so you should fight for his balance. The hip movement also called «Hupa» was a very important element for Professor Pedro and many other JiuJitsu experts such as Rickson Gracie. The "Hupa" movement works not only to defend against the mount position, but also to defend against the lateral control (100 kilos) and the crossed mount, creating space to free us. So, a technique with the possibility to use it in different situations. Finally, it can be said that a technique should be applied at every level of performance, regardless of the level of a student; That a technique should remain efficient regardless of a weight class and not least that a technique should be useful for everyone.
The stress and relaxation theory Jiu-Jitsu consciously and subconsciously brings us to unite our whole body and mind, creating a learning ability that could be described as a form of "body intelligence". By this I mean that our senses are sharpened, that the body is a step ahead of us and therefore make a technique or movement before the brain gives us the command as such. I believe in some people this body intelligence may be great and special, without it, in their genes, but all people have this ability, but they have never dealt with it. Professor Pedro watched his students very intensely during the Randori, which I have also learned through him, without making a big effort to do one or the other technique, or giving them tips and tricks during the training. He always said that the struggle of a man is also to see his personality out. He also always said that one can use his body as sensors or antennas to feel or hear what the other is for a human being. This special ability does not only exist in JiuJitsu, but can also be seen in athletes, dancers, craftsmen, or physicians, each of them simply sweeping both bodies and brains so that the actions are automated still in harmony with the right feeling and precise technique. During a Randori, different moments arise where the entire body or parts of the body, such as the arm, hands, and neck, are tense to provide a maximum performance of the selected action. Then there is the moment of relaxation, for example, when one dominates a certain position. Through the practice of Jiu-Jitsu, we develop fine and coarse motor motions and combine them with our thoughts and feelings. In Jiu-Jitsu one begins to imitate the movements as taught from the instructor, but soon it is no longer an imitation, he/she begins to develop and through one's own bodily sensibility his/her “own” Jiu-Jitsu. The movements get a personal dynamic and as result one grows as an individual. www.vacircabrothers.ch / www.graciejiujitsu.ch

Kali is a very versatile and old system of fighting that includes empty hand as well as weapon training methods. It is a devastating Art unto itself, but when you add the Kyusho you become even more efficient, effective and advanced in disabling an opponent. Kali has always taught what is called "Gunting" for strikes to weaker aspects of the arms, in volume #1 the Kyusho added even greater potential and a perfect starting point for the Kyusho or Kali practitioner. Many arm destruction methods were demonstrated as well as Kyusho Knockouts using only the nerves of the arm. This second volume expands on these powerful Kyusho targets by working from the arm traps of volume #1 and demonstrating additional and even more powerful head targets for incapacitation of the opponent. This video compilation will bring you far more advanced skills, even if you do not practice Kali... the two methods were meant for each other. Several KO's are demonstrated so you can see the efficiency and affect Kyusho brings to Kali.

Ju Jutsu
Arts of Japan Pedro R. Dabauza is an energetic specialist of the traditional Arts and is without doubt one of the true authorities of modern Budo especially Judo and Ju Jitsu to which he has dedicated his entire life of work, study and travel. Here he presents us with a study on Budo Goshin Jutsu, one of the Ryu of Ju Jitsu, positioning it in the general framework of the Gentle Art. He has also put together a video which is essential for those who are seriously interested in the material and who know that this didn't begin with the Gracie Brothers; rather it began much earlier in medieval Japan where warriors were trained in the effectiveness of their Arts, where intelligence, philosophy and value were all equally important in the formation of what we know today to be a Samurai warrior.
Ju Jutsu
U JUTSU is the true name given to the totality of techniques and concepts related to the Ju (softness, flexibility). In recent times, according to the phonetics of each country, it had its historical beginning and is known by different names: Ju Jitsu, Jiu Jitsu: the words are similar but the objectives are identical. Japan was deeply entrenched in the Middle Ages partly due to its isolation and it was plagued by internal wars among territorial clans. At this time, the need arose to create a unique force of special warriors and these were the unequaled and famous Samurai warriors. The Samurai surrendered his entire life to his mission because as a child he had been taught not to feel life and
J
death like other human beings, instead his primary mission in life was essentially to serve his master and fulfill his mission. The Samurai was trained in all forms of the art of war: how to handle the lance, archery on foot or on horseback, swimming, strategy, etc‌ but there were two subjects that held prime importance in his training and they were: strict training in the Bushido, which is the code of customs and ethics for one’s existence and the handling of cutting weapons: tachi, katana, wakizashi and the less noble ones, the point and aikuchi. With his body and his katana, the Samurai formed a single, united being and he took care of this form in the same way that he cared for his body and his spirit. But that

it happened if he could not make use of it in combat? This is why Ju Jutsu (the gentle art or gentle techniques) became popular.
JU JUTSU THE OLD ART, THE ART OF THE XXI CENTURY Many different schools or Ryu appeared throughout the Japanese territory mainly due to the great number of clans that existed there, and because of their isolation each clan had its own coded study of defense and reduction techniques. These days we have very little information about these codes due to the practical nonexistence of any written documents. From a time of continuous wars they passed into a time of peace in the period known as Tokugawa. At that time
the Ryu were organized and classified and today we have knowledge of the Takenouchi Ryu, which may be the oldest, the Daito Ryu, the Shinnoshindo Ryu, the Fusen Ryu, the Kyto Ryu, the Segiguchi Ryu, the Jikishin Ryu, the Yagiu Shingan Ryu, the Rioy Shinto Ryu, the Yoshin Ryu, the Tenshin Shinyo Ryu, and so on. But with the centuries these fell into disuse particularly when Japan was forced to open up its borders due to the arrival of an American ship under the control of Captain Perry and as a result everything foreign was seen to be better and the rich ancestral customs of Japan were relegated to a second plane. The Japanese capacity to copy and in most cases improve things became evident during this era. In Japan they drive on the left as in England, their education was greatly influenced by the French and English and even today you can see groups of students dressed in French 19th Century uniforms on the streets of Japanese cities.

Ju Jutsu
“With his knowledge and progressive ideas O Sensei Kano created his own Ryu, Kodokan Judo. He called it Kodokan (or the house where he studied the ancient forms) and to differentiate it from the term Judo that was already being used in the Jikishin Ryu.
The idea or concept of Ju Jutsu did not enter into the plan of things at that time and instead Shihan Jigoro Kano became popular as the precursor of the Martial Arts resurgence in our time. (For more information please refer to the chapter entitled: "Kano, a man and name for history", in the book: "Kata Judo-Ju Jitsu" published by Alas, 1998). O Sensei Kano, a man before his time in Japanese society was a great educator with knowledge of the English language, and he sensed the great contribution that the arts could offer to the youth and society in general, not only from a physical point of view but also only from a
moral and spiritual one. This was when the Jutsu concept became Do (path), and as a consequence Ju Jutsu became Budo. O Sensei Kano studied and deepened his skill in numerous Ju Jutsu Ryu, but most often in the Kyto Ryu and Tenshin Shinyo Ryu where he managed to get the Densho (Parchments) that credited him as an expert in their techniques and concepts. These ancient documents can be seen today in the Tokyo Museum. With his knowledge and progressive ideas O Sensei Kano created his own Ryu, Kodokan Judo. He called it Kodokan (or the house where he studied the ancient
Arts of Japan
Ju Jutsu forms) and to differentiate it from the term Judo that was already being used in the Jikishin Ryu. O Sensei Kano selected all the techniques and concepts that best adapted to his idea of Kodokan Judo, and this created a lot of dissention among Ju Jutsu Sensei purists. But O Sensei Kano’s ideas prevailed and revolutionized the Arts. He also facilitated the introduction and evolution of Karate Do and its exponent O Sensei Funakoshi into Japanese society as well as that of Aiki Jutsu, today known as the Aiki Do of O Sensei Ueshiba. In the Kodokan there was even a department called Ko Budo Kenkykai where the most diverse Arts were studied. O Sensei Kano chose from among his most famous pupils so that they would study and give him up-to-date information on what they learned. On his death in 1938, the directors of the Kodokan closed down this section. We should point out that although they lived in different cultures, both O Sensei Kano and Pierre de Coubertain lived during the same era and they both fought for the reestablishment of the same values before they knew each other personally. Given the great repercussion that a figure such as O Sensei Kano had, we will now turn to the history and current reality of Ju Jitsu in the West. At the end of the XIX Century and beginning of the XX Century, different Judo Sensei went to various western countries and among them of course was the Sensei of the Ryu Kodokan Judo. This had been created as a Ryu from the beginning since O Sensei Kano had discovered Judo whilst practicing Ju Jitsu and so the first was present in the second. Thus, perhaps the first precursor was Sensei Tani in England, followed by Senseis like Renie in France, Ono in Germany, Baner in Austria, Hanko Rhi in Switzerland, Teppii in South

Arts of Japan Africa, and Yamashita and Kakiowa in the U.S.A. This is why nowadays Ju Jitsu is practiced by thousands of Jujitsukas and in some countries it is more popular than Olympic Kodokan Judo. The teaching of Ju Jitsu is regulated and undertaken in diverse organizations on a worldwide level. In Japan Dai Nippon Butokukai is the oldest and is favored by the Japanese government because of its preservation of Japanese Martial Arts. In 2002 this organization will hold a Martial Arts World Convention in Kyoto, its headquarters, to commemorate its centennial with representatives from all countries and with demonstrations of the oldest arts. The Kokusai Budo In IMAF Organization is equally important and is directed by Sensei Sato and has its headquarters in Tokyo. In the West the oldest organization is the European Ju Jitsu Federation directed by Sensei Vernon Bell. Others were later established like the Ju Jitsu International Federation and the European Ju Jitsu Union directed by Orlandi and Baguena, the World Ju Jitsu Organization directed by Sensei Clark and Sensei Bertoletti, the World Kobudo Federation directed by Sensei Therien and Sensei Morris, Sekai Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu Renmei directed by Sensei Pell, The World Elite Black Belt Society directed by Sensei Cheek. Even the Ibero-American Confederation of Ju Jitsu has been created and is directed by Luis Baguena thus uniting all Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries. In addition to the above mentioned organizations many others exist that take into account the traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu as well as its wester n evolution, and of these I will mention Brazilian Ju Jitsu with its Ryu Gracie Ju Jitsu,
Ju Jutsu Machado Ju Jitsu, and so on. We will conclude this journey with the most recent one that seeks to contribute in a particularly different way to Ju Jitsu and to the Budo in general and this is the International Budo Union Organization, which was created by a group of masters from different countries. We are sure to hear a lot more from this organization in the near future. All these organizations that support Ju Jitsu promote quite diverse Ryu. Throughout my practice and study of Budo I have learned from numerous Sensei, and I owe them everything. Therefore, in order to share my knowledge in the courses that I give and so that the students can learn and contemplate the richness of the art, I have given a name to my teaching: Budo Goshin Jutsu Ryu. It is not a new Ryu; rather it is an up-to-date concept of Ju Jitsu. I will now continue with a look at the philosophy and the technical sections that make up this concept.
Budo Goshin Jutsu Ryu JU JITSU is the generic name of the group of methods whose main philosophy is to maximize the use of an individual’s energy both physical as well as
mental, in order to achieve a state of well-being and individual evolution and as a consequence the well-being of the society in general. The different Ryu are the path or principles by which this result can be achieved. A Ryu (School) should be based on a solid foundation of principles and a progressive methodology that is conceptually appropriate. All teaching requires the application of a methodology that incorporates adequate procedures. The word method comes from the original Greek translation Meta-Odos (path), in fact, method means: the path towards an end, with reference to a concept. This end of the path is what we look for when we apply the
Arts of Japan method and it is no more than the physical, mental and humanistic training of the individual.
The method can be applied with the following variables: Inductive: Teaching from the specific to the generic. Deductive: Teaching from the generic to the specific. The method should be: • Graduated: From the simple to the complex, progressive and with the following characteristics: security, easiness, variety, motivation and logic. • Associative: That allows associations between techniques to be made. • Repetitive: That the techniques are understood and learned maximally by means of repetition. • Integral: That it allows the development of the student’s qualities. • Demonstrative: That the method is demonstrated through the techniques. This method should become clear in a pluralistic way, that is to say by parts, or better
Arts of Japan said in an analytical way as well as in a global, synthetic or holistic way. Having established the key elements of a method or a concept I will now describe the various techniques that constitute a Budo Ryu: • KI HON (FOUNDATIONS) • UKE WAZA (BLOCKING AND AVOIDING TECHNIQUES) • ATEMI WAZA (STRIKE TECHNIQUES) • KYUSHO HO (STUDY OF THE VULNERABLE POINTS IN THE HUMAN BODY) • KATAME WAZA (CONTROL TECHNIQUES) With the following kyo (GROUPS): • KANSETSU WAZA dislocation techniques • SHIME WAZA strangle-hold techniques • OSAEKOMI WAZA immobilization techniques • APPAKU/GYOKKY WAZA pressure and pinching techniques • HOBAKU WAZA techniques for tying up the opponent. All these technical sections are applicable to TACHI WAZA (standing techniques) and NE WAZA (floor techniques) in order to achieve a global performance: • RENKO HO. Conduction forms • NAGE WAZA. Throwing and flooring techniques • RENRAKU WAZA-RENZOKU WAZA (chaining and combinations of similar or different techniques with a fixed or changing character. • BU WAZA (weapons techniques) a study of weapons, as much for defense as for attack. Antique and modern weapons. • KUATSU WAZA (resuscitation techniques) • KATA studies of fixed forms that involve all the various techniques. OYO WAZA (or superior techniques) is included in this section. These are techniques that encourage the internal development NAI KI
• Preset Katas, creative katas. Although the concept BUDO GOSHIN JUSTU RYU considers and concedes a primordial position to the Martial Art, other forms are also included: • RANDORI (FREE WORK) • SHIAI (COMPETITIVE SPORTS) • SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: the study of special techniques for specific groups. In this section such diverse topics as police, security, protection, relaxation, survival, strategy, oriental culture, and so on are included. • PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY: Knowledge of the history and evolution of the Martial Arts in general in order to fully understand the particular school of study None of these technical sections would have any value if the student were not taught to have respect for other systems and the people that developed them.
BUDO GOSHIN JUTSU RYU School of the Martial Arts Way and self-defense techniques. It is a summary of concepts and techniques that despite having a foundation based on the teachings and traditions of the past, also incorporates the knowledge of modern Martial Arts such as Judo, Aikido, Karate Do and all Arts that contribute some positive concept towards self-defense and as a consequence towards personal achievement such as the Do or Way in order to reach the highest levels as a human being. In previous videos with Budo International these concepts were developed both for footwork as well as floor work and the katas. This work is broadened here in this video: Ju JitsuBudo Goshin Jutsu Ryu, and will be further developed in subsequent videos on Kata in its soft and hard forms. There is a weapon that disarms - the facts, and these will help you to progress in your Budo.

In this DVD, G.M. Larry Tatum (10th Dan) develops techniques of the Kenpo program at the highest level. Particularly, some of his “favorites” like Flashing Mace, Parting Wings, Entwined Lance… Masterfully executed and based on the experience of the movement, G.M. Tatum incorporates his innovative teachings in these techniques that will help you add and complement your training in the Kenpo system. Besides, they provide the individual with the best choice for selfdefense, based on the logical and practical thinking, and place him in the path of understanding the art of Kenpo. These are the self-defense and fighting systems of the modern times we live in. They are designed so that the practitioner gets all the benefits that training these techniques can provide. This DVD has the support of Master Adolfo Luelmo (9th Dan), who goes on with a series of techniques performed in a smooth and strong way, for situations of extreme aggression, in which can be appreciated different states of the movement, in a logical and effective way. As a conclusion, Master Camacho Assisi (8th Dan), displays a technique that combines the strength of the arms and his expertise with legs.

The Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a system based on both weapons and empty hands at the same time. It incorporates many of the new-generation weapons, swords, knives, circular kerambits, bars, batons of different lengths and other more particular weapons. Even in our empty hand training methods we face an opponent who attacks us with weapons in both hands, as well as several opponents at once. This type of training makes us more aware of everything that happens during an altercation and what do and not do when facing one or more armed aggressors. In this second DVD, Maha Guru Horacio Rodrigues, heir to the lineage of Pendekar Pak Victor De Thouars, of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak, addresses its particular way to train and use the different weapons, laying the foundations for more advanced future plans of study and the application of technique. This video includes the principles of work, angulation, Sambuts, Jurus and drills with the short sword "Pedang", short knife "Pissau", short stick "Tonkat Matjan", Sarong, and applications of selfdefense with empty hands.

Kyusho Targets are specific areas on the body that we manipulate to take advantage of anatomical weaknesses. These fall on the nervous, respiratory, muscular, and skeletal systems. The Nervous System being the one to have the quickest response is the most targeted.
Kuysho Filipino Martial Arts H2H and Kyusho T.A.C.T.I.C.S. Pangsinawaling Panuntukan In the Filipino Martial Arts it is said that when you learn to use one type of weapon you then can use anything as a weapon as well as empty hand tactics. The movements from one translate easily into the others, with slight modifications. As mentioned in my first article titled “FMA and Kyusho” I state why FMA is a great Martial Art System. I point out how under stressful encounters our Gross Motor Skills, which are big movements; arms extending forward, upward or downward in big motions, dominate our response to a threat. What training in FMA does is give us what I like to call “Trained Gross Motor Movements”. Training with a single or double stick hones in on our natural Gross Motor Movements. Training with edged weapons makes our movements sharper and our reactions quicker. So when we put down the weapons our hands move quicker, cleaner and naturally where as our opponents who do not train in FMA seem to move more slowly. I once held a two hour FMA workshop for 14 people, some experienced and some new to martial arts.
Filipino Martial Arts
T
he first hour was double stick in which I taught them a Sinawali pattern. We went over the different ranges adding takedowns, kicks and disarms. The next half hour was knife defense followed by empty hand for the last half hour. At the end of the workshop I asked what each section had in common. All I saw were blank stares. After a few moments I told them that they used the same Sinawali pattern in everything. A slight pause as they considered this then many “oh…”s were uttered as they realized what transpired over the last two hours. Martial Arts are about movement. Take one set of movements and try it against as many attack scenarios as you can. Grabs, chokes, punching combinations, and anything you can think of. Use your creative imagination. There are no wrong ways only better ways. You do not have to make your defense, counter-offense or whatever you like to call it, complex. As my Combat Arnis instructor, Professor Danny Paulo used to tell us with a chuckle “K.I.S.S., keep it simple stupid”. In this article I am going to use a Sinawali pattern and aim at Kyusho Targets. Sinawali is a structured stick pattern alternating left and right hands in a weaving manner. These drills can be done Double Stick, Single Stick and one Empty Hand, both Hands Empty, Single Stick and Knife, Knife and Empty Hand and Double Knife. You can use the Sinawali as an initial response or attack and combine it with kicks, locks, strikes and throws. Kyusho Targets are specific areas on the body that we manipulate to take advantage of anatomical weaknesses. These fall on the nervous, respiratory, muscular, and skeletal systems. The Nervous System being the one to have the quickest response is the most targeted. As stated earlier slight modifications will be needed. To start we do not fight in the closed stick position, with one hand near our ear and the other under our opposite elbow. We will use one Sinalawi pattern for our examples. Standing in a right lead fighting position, the right hand will jab out at a 45* angle and retracts to starting position. Left hand strikes from right to left slightly downward and ends on the left near the head. This is followed by the right hand also striking downward and ending on the left.

Kuysho Let’s look at a few examples. Starting in right lead with opponent in common left lead. 1.) Arm Destruction: Attacker executes a right cross. You respond with a right knuckle wrap to the inside of his wrist striking Kyusho targets. The targets will depend on which punch is used; vertical, horizontal or diagonal. This does not matter as you will be striking either the Radial, Medial or Ulnar nerve. Hand weakens and opens. Electrical shock and numbing can occur in the fingers and arm. Right hand comes back into chamber and the left hand targets just below the crease of the arm on the top of the forearm muscle activating the Lateral Antebrachial Cutaneous Nerve (Kyusho Target) with your Ulna bone. Attacker’s right leg buckles and arm weakens. The left hand ends up near the left ear. Now the right hand strikes the center of the Bicep muscle with a Sword Hand into another Kyusho Target, the Musculocutaneous nerve. Pain in entire arm as it swings out. Electrical shock and numbing will occur down to the fingers. Loses use of arm. 2.) Elbow Lock/Break: Attacker executes a left jab. Again knuckle wrap with the right hand this time striking the Kyusho Targets on the back of the hand.
These are the nerves situated between the bones of the back of the hand. Hand opens and becomes weak. Left open hand strikes the outside of the wrist, grabs and drags fingers into wrist targets on the inside of the arm. Body jolts forward and arm weakens. Legs weaken. Pull attacker’s left hand as your right hand strikes in the middle of the attacker’s triceps muscle. Arm straightens causing elbow to lock, hyper extend or break. 3.) Head Throw: Attacker executes a left jab then a right cross. Knuckle wrap with the right hand striking the Kyusho Targets on the back of the hand as in example #2. Hand weakens and opens. Electrical shock and numbing can occur in the fingers and arm. Left open hand strikes the inside of the right wrist, grabs and drags putting pressure into wrist targets. Body jolts forward and arm weakens. Legs weaken. Right knife hand strike to the Kyusho Target on the neck located at the center of the Sternocleidomastoid Muscle level
Filipino Martial Arts with the Adam’s Apple. This will cause the body to weaken, severe pain and much more. Now slide your hand onto the skull, step back with your left foot and throw. 4.) Rib Strike: Sinawali is also done in zones. These are sometimes referred to as “Heaven and Earth” or “High and Low”. I like to use the latter. You can have any combination; High-Low-High, Low-High-Low, High-High-Low, etc. In this next example we will use a “High-High-Low” targeting pattern. Attacker executes a left strike. Stepping to your right, knuckle wrap with the right hand striking the Kyusho Targets on the back of the hand as in example #2. Strike on the body with your left hand just behind the shoulder causing attacker’s body to turn exposing the rib cage.
Now with your knuckles strike the lateral branch of the T5 nerve, which is midline on the side of the body between the ribs. The trajectory of this strike is straight in toward the opposite side. This will cause the diaphragm to spasm affecting the breathing as well as rapid withdrawal, entire body weakening, loss of motor function, severe pain, and dizziness. In the end even if you do not cause a “Kyusho Effect” you are still hitting anatomically weak areas of your attacker. Caution is needed when practicing any Martial Art. Always train with a Certified Kyusho International Instructor. *Even though footwork was not discussed you should always be angling away from the attacker’s strikes. **Only a few effects of striking Kyusho Targets were mentioned but some strikes can cause more dysfunctions of the body and internal systems.
