In this DVD, G.M. Larry Tatum (10th Dan) develops techniques of the Kenpo program at the highest level. Particularly, some of his “favorites” like Flashing Mace, Parting Wings, Entwined Lance… Masterfully executed and based on the experience of the movement, G.M. Tatum incorporates his innovative teachings in these techniques that will help you add and complement your training in the Kenpo system. Besides, they provide the individual with the best choice for selfdefense, based on the logical and practical thinking, and place him in the path of understanding the art of Kenpo. These are the self-defense and fighting systems of the modern times we live in. They are designed so that the practitioner gets all the benefits that training these techniques can provide. This DVD has the support of Master Adolfo Luelmo (9th Dan), who goes on with a series of techniques performed in a smooth and strong way, for situations of extreme aggression, in which can be appreciated different states of the movement, in a logical and effective way. As a conclusion, Master Camacho Assisi (8th Dan), displays a technique that combines the strength of the arms and his expertise with legs.

F

aster or slower, time passes, it is an experience we all have. Time gives us our real dimension and measures us as much as space itself, or even more; it gives and takes away without doing anything, because its dimension is as abstract as it is puzzling. Sometimes we look back and it seems that life has ??slipped away like water through our fingers, like sand grains on a windy day. Others, however, when observing the changes experienced, we have the impression that eons of time have passed and thousands of things have happened. Spells of mind? Hocus-pocus neurons fleeing in disarray? Honestly, I don't care. What I want to point out and share is the phenomenon that even though we all experience it in a different way, it makes us all equal: the fleetingness of life. The way we fill the thousands of moments that are concatenated one after another, most often unconsciously, is what we call life. What it was, no longer exists, nevertheless it remains in our memory and sometimes, for many, it does so as a tyrant anchoring, an antique chest of identified pains and joys with no more power than that we grant it. What it is, is crumbled and mixed most of the time in the branches that hide the forest. Few are the moments in life in which we attend and are protagonists our consciousness of being and living that particular moment. They leave us just as they have arrived, in the same way as when we strive to take command in the middle of a vivid dream: we get lost in the smallest thing. The future, the arcane secret that the most experienced in occultism and even the most ignorant beings try to decode, is an empire where it dwells a single certainty: finitude. At each step, hidden, fate is pressing; at each step, hidden, free will, wise or ignorant, imposes its limited but determining designs. We choose, we opt for a path, when in fact what we are doing is dismissing millions of them and in doing so, the stone in the pond doesn't make waves, but tsunamis that reverberate hitting the confines of infinity; so in the end, cause and effect get entangled creating a sense of continuity, which is but one more deceit to disturb our lucidity. Time is the greatest deception and the most imperative of the realities that frame us. As inevitable as elusive, as perishable as eternal; tempus fugit, time goes fast, flees, fades, because its dimensional reality is immaterial and

"I am interested in the future because it is the place where I will spend the rest of my life." Woody Allen

through it, even the most ordinary of the mortals experiences the confrontation with the transcendent. That expiry is what compels us, persuade us and urges us to fulfill the intended purposes. That which is eternal in us is not what gives us the stamp of continuity, the hallmark of individuals, the peculiarities to which we cling. The eternal, the spirit that animates our first and ultimate nature defines itself indefinable, because even more subtle than time itself, it has much finer garments; the spirit, like water, seeps into the strainer of the temporal; what remains stuck in there, is not the essential. Time, more than anything else, is the stage of our work. Places change, the characters intermingle and confuse the passing of the acts and scenes; even the script itself, subject to change, corrections, cross-outs, studs, side notes and improvisations, mutatis mutandis, it is reviewed and revisable. But time, ah! Nothing escapes its action on this plane. Bullfighter of vanities, exterminator of objectives, butcher of all personal prominence, time is a merciless executioner of every vestige of particularity. Measuring rod for everything and every being, Kronos devours its children without exception, for we all belong to it. Sublime monster, divine executioner, is in its gallows where everything takes its right measurement; where, pious at times, pain ends; where the certainties are diluted. Time doesn't pass, we pass through it. We leave strips of ourselves in each encounter, sculpted by its blows or polished in its sandstorms; the strength of its dimension always shapes us, models us and, at the last moment, finishes us. But without it, what would it change? Nobody volunteers to the way of consciousness, because "carrots" have more supporters than the "stick". It's a king with bad press, but only time provides us with the opportunity for change. His designs, far from being cruel, are great, because evil also surrenders to its power. What has a beginning has an end. What's important in all this? Everyone answers this question his own way, but none can ignore the question. Herein lies its power, herein lies its command.

Krav Maga RED, Concept and Pedagogy This DVD has been designed to support the teachers of the KMRED group, and it also aims at those who want to learn more about our Krav Maga self-defense approach. It is not applying the idea of R.E.D. Development, Research and Evolution only to the technical content of our discipline, but also to the pedagogy that we used to teach. The key word of our research is "Simplification", both on the technical and pedagogical level.

"KMRED SPIRIT" We are primarily fighters. We have our own technical identity and it adapts to us. We don't "plagiarize" others. We accept criticism because there's no place for the "ego" in the world of selfdefense. We assemble the work concepts to evolve towards the interest of the contents and especially the interests of those who will use our bases and principles to defend themselves. For us, KRAV MAGA RED, or rather the "KMRED Method", is not a business, it's a passion, a lifestyle. In order to choose our technical options, we have analyzed, husked hundreds of hours of actual videos and versions in realistic situations to finally submit them to the "crash test". We are not a new federation or any other entity that is trying to surf the wave of "Krav Maga and self-defense" thinking only of the profits that this could generate; we are a GROUP. Our approach is GENUINE and we share it with whoever has a REAL OPEN MIND.

“For us, KRAV MAGA RED, or rather the "KMRED Method", is not a business, it's a passion, a lifestyle.” “In order to choose our technical options, we have analyzed, husked hundreds of hours of actual videos and versions in realistic situations to finally submit them to the ‘crash test’.”

THE MAIN IDEA, the concept of the "3 DAYS TO 5 DAYS." In our research, we have returned to the very concept of a "Close Combat". The first idea of ??the Close Combat is that of making available to the "professionals" an operational method of fighting to survive or save lives. This requires taking into account the notion of time. In fact, how long a professional takes to form himself. Originally, between 15 days and 3 months for the luckier ones. Suddenly a question comes up... Does it give time to lear n "many" techniques? ... Especially knowing that in moments of stress, technique implementation is rather complicated... Moreover, for these 'techniques' to be effective... shouldn't they be practiced for a long time in order to gain a good control on them?

So we have offered ourselves to perform an exercise that may seem simple but it turns out to be complex and very enriching in its teachings. The idea is saying that we have from 3 to 5 days to handle a group of people with different profiles and give them the maximum chance of survival in a street fight including notions of defenses against kicks, punches, grappling and chokes in attacks with blunt objects or even knife attacks. And THERE... you have no other solution than going back to BASICS!!!!!!! - Ultra-reduced number of techniques - Bases and principles - Mental conditioning

“Our approach is GENUINE and we share it with whoever has a REALLY OPEN MIND.

“We accept criticism because there's no place for the "ego" in the world of self-defense.

- Development of the natural aggressiveness, that "animal" part that is in us. The foundations of KMRED: STABILITY, SHIFTING, PROTECTION AND RESPONSE...

A sad REALITY... Today, self-defense disciplines like Krav Maga as are confronted with three major problems. -The First is that new generations are in a perpetual quest for the "newest", and when they are asked to repeat every day the same technique over and over (just like a boxer of "English

Boxing" practices his range of blows with only 6 techniques available) they soon get fed up and opt for a more recreational discipline. - The Second problem is that, with the entry of selfdefense and close combat disciplines in sports federations, such as Krav Maga in France, which is managed by the French Federation of Karate, the contents of these fighting methods (which had been created and reserved for professional environments) acquire a "sport" and "aesthetic" dimension, increasingly at odds with the principles of simplification and efficiency. -The Third difficulty, which is directly related to the other two, is the fact that the need that federations, clubs and other structures have to accommodate the greatest number of licenses (licenses = money...), leads them to sort out and develop intense training programs,

corresponding to progression schedules copied from Martial Arts (belts, etc.). The sole purpose of these programs is that of removing the 'boring' aspect of repeating constantly only a few techniques, in order to keep their number of licenses... In fact, students pass from one belt to the next while discovering countless techniques, which give them the feeling of dominating the universe of "self-defense" and make them believe that they are able to face any "street" aggression. The main problem with this approach to an anti-aggression system like Krav Maga, is that it distances it from its primary purpose: EFFECTIVENESS. Let us not forget that self-defense practitioners are seeking solutions to address a variety of

situations, but unlike the freaks of Martial Arts and combat sports, they will not spend 20 years in a training hall to develop their skills. Besides, the "aggression" can occur "tomorrow" and our program is based on this need.

QUESTIONING TRAINING IS QUESTIONING TRAINERS There is another matter of substance... Quite often, some disciplines have their origin in one or two people who at an appropriate time

“…new generations are in a perpetual quest for the "newest", and when they are asked to repeat every day the same technique over and over (just like a boxer of "English Boxing" practices his range of blows with only 6 techniques available) they soon get fed up and opt for a more recreational discipline.”

have had an innovative approach and these are the last references to their "successors". We understand this attitude because 'Martial Arts' have accompanied us throughout our lives. That a Martial Art retains its original dimension is more than legitimate, but that a method meant for "survive" remains frozen on outdated principles in the name of the founder and his descendants is absurd. When we speak of 'self-defense', how can you freeze its content, taking into account the current problems or considering the dazzling evolution of fighting methods with the advent of MMA? Today, particularly in Krav Maga, reference is made to some "experts" who, in the name of their notoriety and even at the risk of losing their credibility, prefer to stay in the 'world' they control, instead of accepting to fizzle out for the sake of the content. Perhaps tomorrow we ourselves will be considered "creators", but one thing is certain: the biggest lack of

respect that our "heirs" could commit is to continue teaching the exact copy of what we have created, without considering that the context, situation, life and needs are constantly changing... This is so... because it's not our name what people must remind, but the R.E.D. concept... Research, Evolution and Development A small remark by way of conclusion... Our work has led us to meeting many people and on several occasions we have been asked: "Why do you still call this Krav Maga? And we have answered: It's true, our content differs significantly from the program of the founder of Krav Maga, but we share the same mentality with which he conceived it, and we don't deny our 'technical origins', despite more and more Krav Maga styles are seen every day in the "planet". There are days in which we prefer to call ourselves just KMRED to mark our difference. Our motto: “Between being and appearing, we have chosen, Student one day, Student forever.”

Wushu CONTEMPORARY FANZIQUAN Fanziquan (Lit. Turning/Rotating Fists Boxing) is a traditional martial art style that originated in the northeast region of China featuring a vast array of quick and forceful punching techniques. Due to its long history, Fanziquan has been known by many names such as Bashanfan (Eight Flashing Turns), Bafanmen (Eight Turns School), Fanquan (Turning Boxing), and more. The style, as well as several of its main movements, was recorded by the anti-Japanese General Qi Jiguang of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in one of his essays called “New Book of Effective Disciplines”, which indicates that Fanziquan was well established more than 400 years ago. As the style spread across different geographies during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it grew out into many different branches and sub-styles. Therefore, until t o d a y, w e c a n s e e t r a c e s o f combined traditional styles with Fanziquan all over China.

DEVELOPMENTS UP TO THE REPUBLICAN ERA To understand to the origins of Modern Fanziquan, it is imperative to visit the history of the Ma Family Tongbei Martial Arts, because that is the main source upon which modern Fanziquan was created. Originated in the Hebei province, the Tongbei Martial Arts are not a single martial arts style, but an effort to amalgamate the best elements and principles from several styles founded by Pan Wenxue. These principles and knowledge were then passed down to Li Yunbiao, a reputed master who earned himself the nickname “Iron Arm Swallow”, who in his turn passed it down to Huang Linbiao, whose successors included the

Wushu well renown masters Ma Fengtu and Ma Yingtu. Back to Fanziquan, it is said that the style originated from Han Luma of Hebei, who then passed it to the Duan Family. In turn, the Duan Family then passed it Xu Zhaoxiong from the Northeast region that later passed it down to Hao Mingjiu and Cheng Dongge. And it was during the early Republican era (1991-1949), when Ma Fengtu and Ma Yingtu were able to exchange techniques with Hao Mingjiu and Cheng Dongge over a long period of time, and as a result, the style of Fanziquan became an integral part of the Tongbei Martial Arts.During those friendly exchanges, popular traditional routines of Fanziquan were practiced and enhanced by the Ma masters, starting from eight basic movements that could be practiced independently or in a linear fashion to routines that were twice as long.

CONTEMPORARY WUSHU ERA After the founding of the People's Republic of China (1949-), there was an effort to rescue and include traditional styles as part of the Modern Wushu events for demonstrations and competitions. Each province had its own specialties; i.e. Praying Mantis came from Shandong, Monkey Staff came from Sichuan, and so forth. Subsequently, the Chinese Wushu Association would have athletes and coaches travel around the country to perform an effective exchange of techniques and routines. Moder n Fanziquan was developed in Shaanxi, mainly based on the work of the late Wushu Grandmaster Ma Xianda, who is an inheritor of the Ma Family Tongbei

Wushu Martial Arts learning directly from his father Ma Fengtu and uncle Ma Yingtu since very young age. Under GM Ma, the movements included in the “new” Fanziquan routine couldn't have been more traditional. In fact, since the early 60s, he combined the main movements of two traditional routines into a single routine arranged to satisfy some of the new regulations of the Modern Wushu competition format such as time limit, competition floor usage, etc. Then, he and several of his students traveled across the country to disseminate this important part of his remarkable legacy, teaching the routine to all main provincial teams and coaches. Grouped under the category called “Other Boxing Styles Group 2”, Fanziquan became an official competition item of the National Wushu Championships in China, alongside the styles Piguaquan and Tongbeiquan. It is worth saying that among the main representatives of Fanziquan through this early era of Modern Wushu competition, especially prior to the end of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), were the renown masters Bai Wenxiang, currently the vice president of the Shaanxi Wushu Association, and Gao Xi'an, both who are actual disciples of the Ma Family Tongbei Martial Arts. Furthermore, the late 70s also saw the rise of the young Jet Li, arguably the most famous Wushu athlete turned into an international movie star, and it is common knowledge that Fanziquan was one of his specialties, which he has exhibited on many stages around the world and in some of his movies in bits and pieces.

TACTICS AND TECHNICAL CONTENT The essence of Fanziquan is captured in the old name of Bashanfan which refers to sudden and continuous tumbles or overturns of the fists up, down, left and right; that are executed as fast as lightning flashes; and can be applied in eight specific variations, including forward, back, up, down, left, right, center and double techniques. In contrast to other northern styles, famous for long range techniques, kicks and leaps, Fanziquan stresses short range punching techniques employing arms, elbows, shoulders and hips with fewer leg techniques. This characteristic marks the style as a Short Boxing type and makes it most useful in close quarters hand-to-hand combat. Jabs, straight blasts, uppercuts, hooks, reverse punches and other arm techniques are used in combination with nimble footwork to enter your opponent's optimal striking range and overwhelm with constant pressure. The three main stances of Fanziquan are the horse stance, the semi horse stance, also known as 40-60 stance, and the unicorn stance, providing solid balance without sacrificing in mobility since the feet are never anchored to the ground completely.°°The few kicks in the system are usually trained high during practice but aimed lower than the knee for application, mainly used to setup sweeps combined with grabs and locks with the arms and hips. There is only one high kick, the “nail kick”, a straight line kick that travels with a piston-like action from the center of the body usually aimed at the opponent's throat. The traditional combat theory of Fanziquan is aggressive and relentless. There are no lulls in the battle. Getting inside with phenomenal speed and crushing your opponent. Lastly, the Ma Family members practice

Wushu Fanziquan with their distinctive method of force execution, often denominated Tongbei Energy, which was developed organically by blending several of the most important elements from their various styles, such as the long range and suppleness of the Tantui and Piguaquan, the speed and sweeps of Chuojiao, the short range and power-issuing methods of Bajiquan, together with Fanziquan's own lightning fist tumbles and punching methods.

FANZIQUAN TODAY Contemporary Fanziquan has continued to be practiced extensively in China and around the world, becoming very popular on Wushu competitions and demonstrations. For the last 30 years, the same tightly paced routine that famous Shaanxi athlete Chu Fenglian used to perform during the late 80s has not been subject to considerable change in shape or emphasis. Although, when compared to the traditional style, there are many exaggerated overt movements and a few additions to highlight certain characteristics of the style or even physical abilities of the performers. In regards to traditional Fanziquan, there are various traditional branches of the style still being practiced in China and abroad, including the Ma Family Tongbei Fanziquan lead by Master Ma Yue, who is the son of GM Ma Xianda and the sixth generation guardian of the Ma Family Tongbei Martial Arts. Each lineage of the style may have their own regional traits and unique qualities, but they all share the same key principles with punches as dense as raindrops and fast as a burning string of firecrackers!

Acknowledgment: The author wishes to thank Master Ma Yue, sixth generation guardian of the Ma Family Tongbei Martial Arts, for his follow up and contribution to this article.

VACIRCA BROTHERS JIU-JITSU The Vacirca Story Part 2 Š 2016 Franco Gehriger-Nagel

Vacirca,

Sandra

In late autumn 1989, it was the first time that I came in touch with the Gracie's and their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Sifu Paul Vunak, founder of Progressive Fighting Systems (PFS), invited me to participate in one of his training with Rickson Gracie at that time. Although the founder of JeetKune-Do, the late master Bruce Lee, had worked intensively on ground fighting and studied different form of Martial Arts related to Grappling, these techniques were at that time not my preferred ones, but that would be changed on this very special day. The simple, family-like and respectful atmosphere at training Master Rickson training place motivated me within short time to train with the Gracie family members and their cousins the Machado's and to definitely give to the Brazilian method of Jiu-Jitsu a chance.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu n July, 16th 1995, my brother Demetrio and I opened the doors of the new Vacirca Academy of Martial Arts (VAMA) in Zurich, and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu became a very important part of our teaching program. The JKD-Grappling method that we trained back then, before introducing Jiu-Jitsu into our teaching program, was little by little replaced by the Gracie method. This guided our Martial Arts Academy to a new training program; in the long distance we focused primarily on Thai boxing of Ajarn Chai Sirisute, in the middle "trapping" range the PFS-JKD program was applied, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on the ground. In weapons training the Filipino KaliEskrima as taught by Guru Dan Inosanto remained the same way as it was already before. Our location had 150m2 judo mat area, with a very varied range of courses for men and women, and I did not had to wait long, that a men living with his family in our neighborhood brought his little son and asked me if I his son Gazmend Amiti could also take part of the training. The small Gazmend was not only the first young boy I registered in our Academy, but he was also the youngest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student we had. Our Academy grew in a very short time to become the first European base for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Due to the numerous TV appearances, radio interviews and articles in newspapers and international magazines, the interest of our Academy increased so much, that we soon started also to lead our own Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminars abroad. Our reputation gained even more, when our 4-man small but highly motivated Swiss BJJ team (Nikos Bachzetsis, Martin Hardmeier, my brother Demetrio and I), came back with a silver, a bronze medal and two fourth places, all in the Black belt division returned from the first Brazilian JiuJitsu World Championship in Rio de Janeiro in January 1996. The International BJJ Federation (IBJJF) had us recognized as official Black belt holders and appointed me as the president for this sport in Switzerland; additionally, I was invited to represent Switzerland as a founding member of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. In Rio de Janeiro, via Madrid, our team housed in a hotel in Copacabana called "Ouro Verde" (Bras. green Gold). The owner of the hotel was a Swiss gentleman who had spent a long time in Ecuador and later settled in Rio de Janeiro. With his help we were looking for a adequate place for training before of the contest, so I started my research and we found a Dojo, which was not so far from our hotel. We just

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu wanted to have a training place for us, so a few mats would be enough good for us, but we founded even more. As we walked in the morning, I saw several young people who went into a building with kimonos in their arms. Most of them kept also their Budo belt in their hands, and based on the colors, such as yellow, orange and green, I thought first that it should be some karate or judokas practitioners, but that was not so. So we stepped also in the building, and walked up to the third floor, where we found a simple fitness center, with a sizable Tatame area. Immediately a nice lady approached us and my brother Demetrio, who spoke Portuguese better because of his work at IBERIA at that time, he immediately took the role of the translator for all of us. The receptionist told us that we were welcome to have a look around. We explained to her which where our intensions and that we were very happy if we could use the matted area for a few hours per day during our stay in Rio. She also offered us to meet again later and to talk to master Augusto Cordeiro, also a well-known Jiu-Jitsu expert himself. Until then I never had met outside of the Gracie family nobody. I thought that the Gracie's were the only and first to teach this style and owned the "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu monopole in their country. I immediately agreed to come later and to meet master Cordeiro later. Like the "four musketeers" but with our white kimonos we stepped in the arena of one of the most respectful masters of Jiu-Jitsu in Rio de Janeiro, at the Academia Augusto Cordeiro. The receptionist showed us where the dressing rooms were and told us, that the master and his assistant Professor Georghino (George Junior) would also like to welcome us. Mestre Cordeiro embraced us, as if we were old friends and had not seen us for a long time. Professor Georghino was a bit more reserved, probably because he did not know exactly what we were looking at his Dojo. We explained why we were in Rio

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu de Janeiro and what we were looking for in his Dojo. Professor Georghino meant that this was not a problem and if we would like, we could also train in his classes and join training with his disciples. The training began after the students standing in a circle and greeted with a simple handshake. Training with the Gracie's in Los Angeles, I had never seen it like that and I liked so much that I said to my brother that I would love to that in our school back in Zurich. The warm-up was very special, which with the Gracie's in Los Angeles I did not experienced. Most of the times little warm-up exercises was used anyways, because most of the times, the self-defense techniques where used immediately for warming up. But these guys here used a very dynamic and conditioning way and it remembered me more like the warm-up drills used by higher-level Judo-players in Japan. Perhaps the reason was because in Los Angeles the training areas were much smaller and not permitted to use such drilling warmup. In a short moment I made me thousands of questions, which later motivated me to start my own researches. Professor Georghino was the Top student Master Cordeiro, but also trained with Master Carlson Gracie, who had his own Jiu-Jitsu school close by. While we were training, Professor Georghino looked over at us until he decided to come to us and asked if he could tell us and show a few things. Of course we accepted and he started to teach us a few moves and tell us how the competition style was looking like, since we had only little information about it. So in the coming days we trained with Professor Georghino to get ready for the World Cup. I have to mention it that we had luck to get to this place and to Professor Georghino and his hard training, because I believe, without this support it was much difficult to achieve the great result of our team. Short after that successful event, in the same year, I went again to Rio de Janeiro to visit Professor Georghino, but when I arrived, I discovered that he was outside of Rio de Janeiro because of urgent family reasons, and so I postponed the visit for later. During this training trip, I also visited Master Sylvio Behring, who also encountered our Swiss team during the World Cup and then we invited him to give a Behring Jiu-Jitsu seminar in Zurich. During this trip, I also took the opportunity to train at the Gracie school in Humaita and I meet with Grandmaster Helio Gracie, who gently took some time to talk to me. During the private conversation with him, I asked him the question, where I should make my next JiuJitsu training, and without hesitating he said: "... here in Rio de Janeiro with my sons, in Los Angeles with other son Rorion, or in Sao Paulo with Professor Pedro (Hemetério)”. Since until then I trained in Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles, I wanted to get to know Sao Paulo and to train with Mestre Hemetério. This wish was then even stronger when we spent time with Master Waldomiro Perez Junior, the founder of Cia. Paulista, and also top student of Marcelo Behring from Sao Paulo, who visited us in Zurich. Professor Junior was at that time the first who give us a learning path; the result was a very long and close cooperation and friendship. Franco Vacirca www.vacircajiujitsu.ch

Weng Chun Kung Fu in Zhaoqing, China A research journey to the last Chinese grandmaster of the old generation, Taam Pui Chyun (1917-2014) In 2012, after a decade of investigation to search out the last living Grandmaster of Weng Chun (note: Grandmaster Taam called his art “Baan Chung Wing Chun” or “Red Boat Wing Chun”; for the sake of simplicity I henceforth use the term Weng Chun) in China, I finally found a crucial hint with the assistance of a Chinese woman, on the Chinese website of his student, Sifu Leung Wai Choi, and instantly travelled to Zhaoqing in China.

Photos: Andreas Hoffmann, Budo International, text: Andreas Hoffmann, Christoph FuĂ&#x;

he district-free city of Zhaoqing in the south Chinese province of Guangdong is adjacent to Foshan, which once formed an important center of Weng Chun and of all South Shaolin arts. I myself have been instructed there by Grandmaster Pak Cheung, and back then I also visited the village of the Tang- family. Zhaoqing furthermore has a great historical significance for our Shaolin philosophy of Chan or Zen, because the famous Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng once sojourned there and planted a plum tree in the Mei_an temple. Upon arrival in Zhaoqing, my first goal therefore was the beautyful Buddhist nunnery Mei_an, and there, below the gorgeous plum tree of Hui Neng, I thankfully commemorated Bodhidharma and all our ancestors, who passed on to us the marvellous arts of Shaolin. At first, I received a warm welcome from the student of Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyun, Grandmaster Leung Wai Choi at his home, and once again I was surprised by this particular cordiality with which we as foreigners are frequently received by the Kung Fu- families in China. He showed me around his house, introduced me to his family, and demonstrated parts of his Weng Chun program himself or had it demonstrated by his students. For the evening I was invited to the birthday party of one of his students, where we obviously not only indulged ourselves in celebrating, but also in talking shop - Kung Fu can be so easy by just exchanging ourselves, by showing respect to each other and by celebrating our art. In the following days Grandmaster Leung Wai Choi showed me the subtleties of his program, emphasizing the Sixteen Words which for

T

this particular school of Weng Chun represent the most important instruction by our ancestor Fung Siu Ching. We also visited together the schools of his daughter and of one of his students, and I really appreciated to encounter such an intact and exemplary Kung Fu- family in Zhaoqing. Everybody was very happy to see me, and demonstrated their skills. Grandmaster Leung Wai Choi pays high attention to detail in his lessons, and I found it very interesting that his Weng Chun- curriculum also includes many locking and pushing techniques. On the next day, the time had come to meet the oldest member of the Weng Chun- family alive, Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyun, who dedicated 83 of his 96 years to Weng Chun. In the morning I was picked up from the hotel by Grandmaster Leung Wai Choi, his son and my interpreter, and we went to another urban quarter of Zhaoqing. Finally, the 96-year-old Taam Pui Chyun was standing right I front of me, inviting me into his home. Past the wooden dummy which was installed in his corridor, he led me into his living room to have

some tea first. I was deeply touched by his candidness, cordiality, and by his joy about my visit as well as his passion about Weng Chun. Right away I went to get my books and photos, and showed Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyun pictures and movies about his Weng Chun brothers, Grandmaster Pak Cheung and Grandmaster Tang Yick. He was very impressed and had many of his own stories to tell about his brothers, about his Sifu Tang Suen and his Sigong Fung Siu Ching. I had so many questions about the ancestors, which I finally could ask someone who himself had learned from Grandmaster Tang Shuin, and who still knew Fung Siu Ching from eye-witness reports. I barely dared to ask him if he would allow me to film himself, but he actually was very happy about that and insisted in also filming every single form and exercise which he demonstrated. Afterwards, I invited everyone to a nearby restaurant, and Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyun went on with his stories about Weng Chun, enriched by many practical demonstrations. While still in the restaurant, we went through the Wing

Weng Chun Chun Kuen and the Siong Kung, and I received many valuable hints regarding execution and application of these forms. For example, it was new to me that the Siong Kung belongs to a whole set of forms. It was also very interesting to get to know the Weng Chun Qigong exercises of this lineage. Grandmaster Tang Suen once handed his wooden dummy and his long pole down to his student Taam Pui Chyun, and today they are in the possession of Grandmaster Leung Wai Choi. It was a very special feeling and a great honor to be allowed to train with these histo-

ric tools. They also showed me a hand-written book where all the forms and exercises of Grandmaster Fing Siu Ching and Grandmaster Tang Suen had been written down what a treasure! The time simply flew by, as one can imagine. It was also my turn to demonstrate the Weng Chun which I had learned in Hong Kong from Grandmaster Wai Yan, and in Foshan from Grandmaster Pak Cheung. I told the old master how Weng Chun meanwhile is being instructed all over the world, and that the western students are very excited about the art, eager to gain an in-depth

understanding of it. They were very touched by that. I am deeply grateful to Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyun and Grandmaster Leung Wai Choi that they received me so cordially, showed me their Weng Chun, even allowed me to film them while doing so, and readily answered all my questions. Unfortunately, Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyun passed away in 2014, and with him passed the old generation of Weng Chun. Taam Pui Chyun was the last of that generation in mainland China, just as Grandmaster Wai Yan was the last of his generation in Hong Kong. I had the extraordinary chance to learn and research both the Hong Kong- Weng Chun as well as the Weng Chun from mainland China, and I will carry on the project of my teacher from Dai Duk Lun to preserve Weng Chun in all of its richness and to pass it on worldwide. Having learnt the different Weng Chun- traditions from their respective last grandmasters, as well as by daily training and teaching, I recognize the “Red Thread which all Weng Chun traditions thoughout time hold in common. It is this Red Thread that I pass on to the masters and students of our International Weng Chun Association located in Bamberg, Germany.

Jeet Kune Do TRAINING IN JKD If all you can get out of this is just a new perspective on training, you will have achieved a critical element of my teaching. Make no mistake, if you don't train you will get no results, and if you don't like doing exercise most probably you won't even try. Few of us need to use these skills regularly. Therefore, it makes good sense to say that it's hard to find the right motivation to train, but you must do it, no matter how, but you absolutely have to do it, the responsibility for your growth and for your abilities is only yours. If you don't improve or if you feel powerless in a real confrontation, the responsibility is only yours; I recommend you to assume your responsibilities. If you see that there are gaps in your training, try to fill them, no one will do that for you. The most important concept of training is progression.

raining should progress in a logical and consistent way, without ever losing sight of the ultimate goal. Let's see the progression of a jab, for instance: first you have to learn the technique, train in the air or in front of a mirror to correct it, and then move to practice in the sand bag; the bag develops power and teaches the body how to align after a blow. From the sand bag pass to workout with focus mitts, now it is a moving target to spot and to which you must continually adapt. After these individual exercises you can start practicing with a partner. Begin with a sharing exercise with little or no contact, gradually increasing the contact, while maintaining clearly defined parameters. Then Begin to do some sparring for checking your tools against specific instruments; Begin with jab against jab; then jab against jab and direct; jab and jab against jab-direct-hook; jab against all punches; jab against all kicks; jab against punches and kicks, etc., the list is endless. The key lies in moving gradually toward practicing open combat; in so doing, traumas are reduced to a bare minimum, and acquiring bad habits is prevented. Another key point is to always know what are you trying to develop by practicing a particular exercise; is it timing, resistance or sensitivity to pain?

Sifu Alessandro Colonnese If you don't have it clear, you will not fully benefit from the exercise; note that no matter how realistic a training session may be, it will never be a real fight, never! So do not try to do your training in a real fight, you should definitely look at it in terms of distance: Kicking distance Punching distance Gripping distance Fight distance

However, few methods emphasize more than one or two distances; some of them may consider up to three, as in the case of Muay Thai, but they are exceptions rather than the rule. In JKD we train all four different combat distances, this is very important because it's precisely in this process that we discover the salutary lesson of combat distances. Regardless of the ability that we have at a given distance, if the opponent brings up a distance in which we don't feel at ease, our skills will not help in anything; we may be able to hit a fly in its leg a fly with our M16 from a distance of one kilometer, but if the enemy is attacking us from miles away with heavy artillery, I think the consequences are obvious; therefore, having the right tool for a specific target, and at the right time, this is the prerequisite for success in a great battle.

FATIGUE

Fatigue is another factor analyzed by the psychology of confrontation. When you feel very tired, even the simplest action seems complex to implement. During combat, fatigue occurs very quickly, a factor which is difficult to handle when it occurs in a spirit already tested by the symptoms of the fighting stress. Everyone knows that reaching the highest levels of fatigue that a body can tolerate (sleep deprivation), you get harmful effects are not only physically, but also hallucinations and other mental disorders. Training to resist and remain functional in moments of deep and prolonged fatigue is one of the goals that both military and martial arts schools strive to achieve. The training program of some Special Units provides some sleep deprivation through frequent alarms during the night, reducing the rest time students three hours a night. Martial Arts schools in general hold intensive seminars of several days' duration, during which the level of physical fatigue that participants have to cope with increases significantly. A strong increase of fatigue can break down our defensive psychic barriers and trigger unexpected emotional reactions. The purpose of this type of practices is that of making practitioners learn to keep their body and mind in functional harmony, and face rigorously the whole training process till the end. Only when the seminar is over get the students to understand the real importance of learning to not sink and annihilate themselves in front of their own

Sifu Alessandro Colonnese email: sifucolonnese@hotmail.it Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/JFJKDA

Jeet Kune Do limitations, but to set a goal and pursue it by making full use of their mental and physical resources. Only in this way students will be able to confront all the difficulties of a bloody confrontation. My purpose was to give you the right idea of fatigue in a context of real combat, where the psychological aspect of the confrontation plays an important role. Training without taking account of the development of mental abilities through motivation, will and programming objectives, is a serious error. The Warrior Arts have above all the need for an educational function of the body and mind through a training system based on the psychology of confrontation that contributes to decipher and identify the mental blocks we carry within us since the beginning, because no one has ever explained to us the true nature of human

Sifu Alessandro Colonnese beings. The best advice I can give is that you try to find a good technical teacher who can follow your development step by step and give you the right information on the principles governing any martial discipline.

THE GRIPPING DISTANCE

This is the combat situation that ends up in the ground; it’s also known as short distance or distance of clinch. It is generally used by all the specialists in grip fighting systems (Grapplers), who manage to bridge the gap and come into close contact with the opponent searching to take him down to the ground in order to finalize him.

Sensitization exercise

Sifu Alessandro Colonnese It's the most combative distance, so our goal is to get to it so that we can apply easily the most effective gripping techniques extrapolated from Wing Chun and Chinna. There are three ways to harming the enemy at this distance, and all three are extremely effective, each technique has the potential of ending a match immediately by KO. The strategy is that of hitting directly the opponent with a natural weapon, since our body has many war instruments, all usable (available), and at this distance we can pour an incredible amount of pressure on our opponent. The needed tactic is that of encasing the foe to try to dislocate a joint or hit him with the elbows, head or knees. Most people can no longer combat with a dislocated joint, especially the elbow. One of the most important strategies in real combat is using the environment to our advantage by neutralizing the adversary through repeated actions using the ground, and other strategies that can be very useful. I don't know anybody who is able to absorb a blow with the head against a concrete floor, or anything like that; everything counts to take the upper

hand in the confrontation against an aggressor; if you know how to be effective in any environment you will be in a better position to dictate the terms of combat. At this distance we resort to techniques used four known systems or combat methods: Thai Boxing, Grappling, Wing Chun and Kali. Gripping distance:

1. Pak sao / lop sao 2. Pak sao / pak sao 3. Straight blast 4. Head butts, knee strikes, elbow strikes

“JKD stemmed essentially from the Taoist philosophy, although it was very influenced by the Western scientific positivism.

Sifu Alessandro Colonnese more than forty years have passed after the death of its creator, JKD remains the combat system that has interested and still interests the crowd. Few know that Bruce Lee, after creating a complete fighting art, almost perfect technically, innovative and in step with the times, endowed his style non-style philosophical principles and concepts related to the tradition of the ancient art of Kung Fu, that he drew from many philosophical currents, such as Confucianism, Chan Buddhism and Taoism. It is precisely the latter that inspired him the philosophical framework of Jeet Kune Do, which is based on individualism, the pursuit of self-liberation, anti-authoritarianism and other values that, with complete honesty, he tried to introduce in the Martial Arts through his project, that he called Jeet Kune Do. This is why he was very critical of the traditionalists, denouncing their hierarchy of schools, their rigidity and their uniformity. So, JKD stemmed essentially from the Taoist philosophy, although it was very influenced by the Western scientific positivism (which resulted in the scientific conception of training) and the North American practicality based on the research of the effectiveness and the economy of movements. A maxim that characterizes and identifies the Taoist philosophy of JKD is: "Using No Way as Way, Having No Limitation as Limitation". It's a typical Taoist sentence that plays with contradictions, opposites, Yin and Yang and paradoxes, enclosing all in a world of wisdom, and recalling that pure Taoists were essentially individualistic and liberal; that shines through from the first part of the maximum of Bruce Lee, because when he speaks of "no way", he refers to the fact of not having ties with any institution or any fixed, encoded and preordained system, and therefore with no style or combat system, since the liberation and full personal development is determined only by the individual, as each individual is different and unique. While in the second part of the maximum, Bruce postulates that there's no

need to let ourselves be limited by the traditions, prejudices, rituals, dogmas and all that can lead to the crystallization of a system. Many don't know Bruce Lee the philosopher, but it is precisely this aspect that made JKD a truly special system. My encounter with Patrick Strong (first generation student of Bruce Lee), known as "The Lord of the Speed", in addition to improving my technical skills, was also very useful to me in the sense that it made me know in depth the philosophical aspect of Jeet Kune Do, then unknown to me, showing me how deep was the job that Bruce Lee had made at inner level; not by chance he had learned Tai Chi (Art Grand Supreme Fist) from his father, who started him in the study of classical alchemical texts, reaching a deep understanding of how the human body functions in terms of energy (union of body and mind ), so much so that one of his most striking philosophical maxims is the constant reference to the Water element. "Be water, my friend" - "I like water", he used to say, to highlight the Water element that in the reality of things represents the basis and nature of traditional Kung Fu of which Bruce Lee drew much of his philosophic martial knowledge. Concepts and principles such as sinking, fluctuating, emerging and re-emerging as the flow of a river to the sea, fighting without fighting, working intentionally with no-intention, the mind no-mind, the Wu Wuei principle of void, the emptying the cup, etc. As you can see, his propensity for eastern philosophy was an important work piece in the construction of his eclectic combat system, and few people have had this information. I had the privilege and pleasure of knowing, studying and deepening this knowledge with Patrick Strong, who had received it directly from Bruce Lee. Probably this aspect is the most unknown in the world of JKD, but in my opinion is the most important. JKD, my friends, is nothing else than a grouping of elements and principles extrapolated mainly from Kung Fu, and especially of the Wing Chun Yip Man style. Some elements were also taken from different disciplines such as Taiji, Tang Lang, Western Fencing, etc. There is a maximum of the Tao Te Ching - the gospel of Taoism - that Bruce Lee used to recite: "A living man is flexible, soft; a dead man is

Sifu Alessandro Colonnese email: sifucolonnese@hotmail.it Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/JFJKDA

Jeet Kune Do inflexible, rigid. In the same way, all creatures, grass and trees, alive are all malleable and flexible, and dead turn dry and crumbling. The inflexible rigor is the companion of death while the supple sweetness is the companion of life. Inflexible soldiers do not get the victory; stiffer trees are more ready for the ax. The strong and powerful people fall from their seats while the humble and submissive ones rise above them all." The way to move and manage one's body in Kung Fu is closely linked to the movement of the mind. "Mind moves, body thinks" is the profound meaning of the internal process used in Jeet Kune Do. The reference to Yin and Yang, the Taoist universal principles that Bruce Lee extrapolated from Taiji and studied thoroughly with his father, accompanied him throughout his life, giving him the right energy to tackle the course of his brief but tortuous and troubled life. The yang principle (represented by white) is the positive, the day, the sky, the sun, the light, heat and so on, while yin is negativity, the night, the dark, cold and so on. Bruce Lee had perfectly understood how the body was adjusted and kept in balance by these universal laws and he could use them wisely. And here resurfaces once again the water element that was crucial for the development of Bruce Lee's JKD; water, my friends, is the natural phenomenon that comes closest to Wu Wei: Nothing is weaker than water, but when it attacks something hard that puts up resistance, then nothing can resist to it, and nothing will change its course. These verses explain to us the nature of water, that being so light, it cannot be grasped; if cut it doesn't get injured; if hit it doesn't get hurt; if separated, it will not split; it doesn't have a specific form but adjusts to the container; it manifests powerful and impetuous like Niagara Falls and then remain calm in a pond. In my opinion, water is undoubtedly the dominant element of the universe. "In the interception defend yourself, control and attack in unison, tur ning your body into an unstoppable tsunami."

Master Shaolin Shi Yanti is a monk of the 34th generation of the Songshan Shaolin Temple and a direct disciple of Venerable Abbot Shi Yong Xin. In this his first work for Budo International, he presents the Luohan Shibashou, one of the older and most representative basic forms of empty hand of the Shaolin Temple. According to the book "Shaolin Quan Pu", in the Sui Dynasty, the Shaolin's warrior monks developed a series of simple movements, chosen according to the "18 Luohan statues", hence the name Luohan Shou Shi Ba (18 hands of Luohan). The style of this Taolu is particular and in its continuous movements can be clearly seen combinations of real and unreal movements, defense and counterattack, and a variety of hidden movements. The main hand techniques in this Taolu are those of the palms, and learning requires great agility and coordination, as well as mastering the positions Xubu, Dingbu, Gongbu and Mabu and their features.

The Keysi Column

"Experience is not what happens to us, experience is what we do with what happens to us" Budo Inter national: WHAT IS KEYSI, FOR YOU? My name is Juanjo and I am a Keysi instructor in Madrid. Probably you expected that I speak about an endless stream of techniques meant for self-defense, but that wouldn't even scratch the surface of what Keysi is really for me. I began practicing Martial Arts at age five, today I am 31 and I still keep learning new things every day. If you want me to define what is Keysi, I could only define it as "Family". I guess now you're a little puzzled and wondering about it... B.I.: HOW CAN A SELF DEFENSE METHOD BE DEFINED AS "FAMILY"? When I started training Martial Arts at the age of five, the master was virtually unattainable, you couldn't talk to him because he was superior to you in rank and category; in fact, even my teacher was obliged to seek permission to speak to the "master". I love philosophy in Martial Arts, but in my humble opinion, most of them are made out of rules and hierarchies, they are methods designed for a Tatami and a championship.

B.I.: IN WHAT DOES KEYSI RESEMBLE A MARTIAL ART? In absolutely nothing, because we have no rules to start with, since our scenario is real life, where rivals can be more than one and where there will NOT be a referee to tell us that something is legal or illegal. We don't train linearly against one single opponent, we do it against several at once, and we don't have a filter of age, weight or height. There are no illegal blows or banned techniques for us. B.I.: WHY? Because if an offender pulls his gun on us, we cannot reason with him and simply tell him: Don't shoot me, please! In the end, it will be the offender's decision whether to shoot or not. But the decision to fight for your life is only yours. If I still haven't convinced you, just think: "If you meet a tiger, tell the tiger not to eat you just because you're a vegetarian". Having no rules doesn't mean doing what we want, they instill us as many values ??as norms we ignored. One day I asked Justo DiĂŠguez: For what are you fighting? And he said: To not fight! Perhaps it's a contradictory answer, but it's full of meaning because it makes all the sense in the world and, as I've just disclosed, I

KEYSI AND THE VALUE OF OUR SLIPS

The Keysi Column

asked him directly. You don't need a pass, a special permission or complicated bureaucratic procedures; you can approach him and ask him whatever you want. Throughout my life I have learned Boxing, Kick Boxing, Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, Full Contact... I've always wanted to learn more, develop myself and expand my mind, but I always found barriers. Barriers are limitations; a limitation may be a rule or a determined number of techniques.

B.I.: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LEARN ALL THE TECHNIQUES OF A SYSTEM? Usually after we've learnt everything, all that remains for us to do is practicing again and again so that it becomes something natural for us, but I've always wanted to learn more, and in Keysi I don't need to change methods. B.I.: WHY? Just because it never ends, it is unfinished and that just means I'll never stop learning, I will always be a disciple and they always invite me to innovate, to ask questions, pose my doubts or create my own challenges. B.I.: WHERE IS THE FAMILY WITHIN ALL THIS? My response will be overwhelming: we do not compete. But we have Keysi seminars in which train instructors from all over the world; we don't use colored belts but we also have graduations. In a seminar, my partner may be a "Master Instructor" or a "Dima I", but we both will perform the same work, the same number of hours; and he will show me what I do not know, and I will teach him what I have learned. We are "all" equal; if I fall down he will help me up, and if he falls, he won't lack my hand to help him get back on his feet.

The Keysi Column When we finish training, maybe eight hours will have passed and my training partners might have been a Belgian, a Norwegian, a German, an Italian or a Portuguese. Language, age, physical condition or height doesn't matter at all. That's not relevant, we are only asked to work out and enjoy. When we finish training we don't split, we stay for dinner, we go sightseeing, we visit a beach, a port, a monument; we walk through a park. With your car? With mine? In the end it doesn't matter; in fact, last year I ended up going to the beach with a Czech, a Norwegian, a Nicaraguan and a Spaniard, and although it might seem the beginning of the typical Spanish joke, it was one of the funniest moments of my life. B.I.: HOW IS THE FIGURE OF MY GREAT MASTER? Well, being honest with you and with myself, I don't have only one master, I was lucky enough to be able to develop myself in Keysi, receiving daily lessons for six months in Murcia, where my masters were Fernando G贸mez and Justo Di茅guez himself. Six months where we trained day and night; where I met the family of both of them; where I felt at home being away from home. Welcomed and protected where I was I and not one more, because for them I'm Juanjo and my training mates are named each by their own names, and not by a membership number. Maybe you understand now a little more why Keysi is "Family" for me, but if you ask another instructor he will tell you exactly the same. Keysi has opened my mind in ways I couldn't imagine, and I can only be grateful to everyone. Never give up!

Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a very brutal and devastating Art. The Arts concept its to dominate and take over battleground and space, fast dominating space and engulfing opponents to prevent them from being able to use their weapons or body. Once space is acquired, the base and angle are taken to control opponents rotation or projection, rooting or uprooting is produced from the smallest expression of touch or angle and base position, this we call “Lengket” or sticky. Keeping very close to opponents when striking or using a weapon and putting opponents on “Slywa” or weightless stage of spinal and muscle misalignment. Once rooting takes place, the strike makes massive contact in the body that has no muscle or skeletal protection. “Sambuts” are finishes meaning something very hard to walk away from especially when compression of neck or spine, so finishing means its a done deal. The opposite of that is a “Buang” that stands for throws less devastating in the beginner levels but taught to learn mechanics that in later phases of development of the student or practioner can be modified to “Sambuts” for devastating throws. Compressing skeletal structure, weapons and body structures or striking, grapping defense and offence are all played and studied in our platforms. In this video there's a beginner “Pantjar” platform, also the “Jurus”, which are the playbooks of the system of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak, are played here. This platform teaches where to be in position to attacker, the platform is 3 dimensional and teaches where opponents body's alignments are the weakest to point of contact the platform. It also teaches how to deal with multiple opponents and space needed, base angle and levers are all play here. Hope you enjoy my small offering into a vast large Art. “Hormat Terima Kasi”.

Each year all students of the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER look very much forward to one particular event in the calendar of the school, namely the annual MEGA event. Especially because each year the students as well as the organising committee manage to make this annual “meeting of the elite even better than the last year.

Kung Fu

F

or the first time in the history of the MEGA event, this year it all started already in the afternoon when participants were invited to take part in various highly interesting seminars. At that moment, at 3 pm in the afternoon, numerous guests were already present, all in their Kung Fu uniform, and were eagerly awaiting the upcoming seminars. Experts in individual areas of our art offered the students insight into efficient fighting systems such as the “Kam Na” techniques, Hung Gar’s answer to grappling or “Chat Sing Lin Wan Kuen” techniques. These seminars were completely free of charge for the guests of the evening. They are a priceless and precious additional value for every student and are a further step towards Expo, which should develop from the MEGA Event. As it had

been perfectly organised the participants were guided through the hotel, towards the shower rooms, dressing and changing rooms. For only few hours later, they all got together in the entrance hall where refreshments were served. Shortly after the arrival of the guests the doors were already opened and one could enter the inviting hall. Of course not without the walk to the area for the photo shooting, where the most important guests and those who accompanied them had their photo taken. Once all the guests had taken their seats, a particularly joyous moment followed: Grandmaster Martin Sewer appeared on stage amidst roaring applause and already announced the first big news, i.e. the MEGA seminar on the 30th January 2016, at which his master, Kung Fu legend Dr. Chiu Chi Ling, teaches in Switzerland. All participants were very

Kung Fu pleased and excited about this news and the possibility of registering for the seminar on that very same evening. For when did one have the opportunity to learn from one’s head of style and such an icon? One highlight followed the other. Right after the great news followed an informative presentation on the host and the persons in charge of the event: The KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER. To summarise in short, the presentation showed that the last year’s set goals had been pursued in an exemplary manner and that the set goals had been achieved. But it also showed which ambitious goals one would pursue in 2016. Shortly after the traditional ceremony with Grandmaster Martin Sewer followed, in which all the guests and students handed over their Lai Si (lucky money in red envelopes) to Grandmaster Martin Sewer and could personally congratulate him. To the astonishment of many new faces in the audience Grandmaster Martin Sewer announced after the ceremony

that he would double the received amount of money (several thousand francs) out of his own pockets and would donate it. Those guests who were advanced students knew that Grandmaster Martin Sewer made this selfless gesture at the MEGA event each year. Right after that the guests proceeded to the delicious buffet and enjoyed an excellent dinner. After the meal the next item on the programme already followed. It is well known that such a success like the one of the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER, eventually, is not only dependent on one person but on a big team. A team, to which not only instructors, but also helpful assistant instructor candidates, assistant instructors and referees belong. And it was precisely these members of the team, which were at that moment asked on the stage to be awarded for their success, which was

acknowledged with a big round of applause. Also at that instant the “Student of the Year” of all schools was awarded for his very extraordinary achievements and performance in 2015. Right after that the assistant instructor candidates were honoured for assisting the instructors with the same love and dedication that their instructors exemplify each lesson. And finally, of course the achieved tournament successes should also be mentioned. So the participants and winners of the tournaments, who were very successful at the World Championship in Argentina and in Germany and who could get numerous places on the podium, were asked on the stage. After this big moment and the last round of applause, there was an atmosphere of anticipation in the audience. Indeed, there was still an exquisite dessert to be explored, but almost everyone knew that the legendary Black Belt Show was about to begin. The last bite of the dessert had just been taken, when the light was dimmed. In excitement, many a spectator and even employees of the hotel got out their mobile phones and video cameras in order to record the show. Highlighted with impressive, perfectly placed music, the elite, all of them holders of the first dan black belt, showed their skills in a 40-minute show, managing to impress the audience with each scene anew. Stories of profound meanings were told, impressive stunts and the real Shaolin Kung Fu of the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER were shown. The show ended with thunderous applause, which the audience dedicated to the Black Belts on the stage, and one unequivocally agreed: They did it again! They really managed to exceed last year’s Black Belt Show. After the stormy applause had quietened down and the Black Belts had changed clothes, one went on to the last item of the programme. Throughout the whole evening the guests had the possibility to write down questions which they had always been wanting to ask Grandmaster Martin Sewer and/or his guests of honour. During the Black Belt Show the questions were collected. Of course Grandmaster Martin Sewer answered the numerous questions of the guests and students with a certain sense of humour. He replied to the last question on a more serious note though: “It is very important that we gather on days like this. Of course, we celebrate my birthday, but what is far more important is the fact that we, the best martial artists in the world, come together and talk with each other, learn from each other and have a good time. This is what it is all about. For my part, I am already looking forward to next year.”

"What beautifies the desert is that it hides a well of water somewhere." Antoine de Saint-Exupery "What we know is a water drop; what we ignore is the ocean. Isaac Newton Flow doesn't mean being sloppy; definitely, water is not so, for it doesn't leave any corner uncovered... it reaches everywhere! As asturian people say, "water has a very fine snout". Unhurried, coupling to the circumstances, water is a metaphor for the persistence and extreme adaptability. It's the paradigm of changing in the form without transforming the essence. Water catalyzes life; without water, the land dries and gets barren; and the fire, without a controller, spreads everywhere and the air, turned into a sandstorm, cannot carry the fertility of the clouds, or the force of the changes. Even iron is wrought by the use of fire in the forges! Water is the cradle of all life, the primary livelihood of both inanimate and animate beings, all of them "bags" of hotter and hotter waters, according to their degree of evolution, and adapted to a change that we accompany, of which we are part, and not guilty, as some would have us believe. The "terminal sin" is the JudeoChristian guilt of environmentalism. Water comforts us, cleanses us, and blesses us. Wet in the rivers of the moment, we swim, fight, wreck... Flowing, adapting to the barriers, going down, not opposing anything, water is the perfect analogy of humility, adaptation and not conflict. The water wins aimlessly; following its nature, it surrounds any obstacle and teaches us how to overcome, but with wisdom, free from wear and tear, without losing sight of the goal. What is a rock on the road, a mountain‌? Even trapped in between cliffs and narrow passages, water filters, or evaporates if such a thing is not possible; nothing stops its destination. It's been the river of life that has left in my shores these texts, which today I share in book format. And I say "it left" because all authorship is at least confusing, since we are all debtors of those before us, those who inspired and keep inspiring us, of the floating clouds of the collective unconscious, and even, who knows!, of the spirits and the consciousness around us. I can't teach anything because I don't know anything, but for those who wish to hear my poems, here I leave my sincere and truly felt thoughts, every time more felt and less thought, because mind is a deceptive device that sees what it wants to see and I’ve learned to be suspicious about it.

SINZAN-RYU KARATE KOBUDO THE HIDDEN STYLE OF OKINAWA As a result of a meticulous research and preservation of the most ancient roots of the art of Okinawan karate and kobudo, borns the system called Sinzanryu™ 振山流, preserved by the Okinawa Sinzanryu Koshinkan Karate Kobudo Kyokai ™ of Okinawa. The Sinzanryu is a "secret" system that is practiced according to the logic and the characteristics of oldest teaching, and the main purpose of the Koshinkan association is to transmit it to future generations following the dictates of orthodox method preserved by honbu of Okinawa. he Koshinkan association is headed by Takaya Yabiku Sensei, master of the old guard and considered one of the greatest experts of ko-ryu (old style) karate and Hakutsuru-ken, ie the Okinawa White Crane Fist. After many years of voluntary isolation, due to some unpleasant events linked to former students, who saw him regretfully involved and left him extremely unhappy, Yabiku Sensei decided to take up the fate of their technical heritage in order to preserve it and pass as it has been taught by his beloved teachers. He has therefore drawn up a program of study that was suggested and endorsed by his last teacher still alive, Seiji Irimaji Sensei. It combines his experiences in the Orthodox styles and his personal historical and technical research that began in the late 70s; in this way it was born the Sinzanryu Karate Kobudo.

T

Karate & Kobudo

“The biggest dream of Yabiku Sensei is to spread the Sinzanryu Karate Kobudo, preserving the art as it was handed down, without changes and according to the most orthodox spirit.

Over his more than sixty years of practicing karate and kobudo, Yabiku Sensei trained under several famous Okinawan and Chinese masters, but some of these teachers can be considered those that have most shaped “his style" as it’s intelligible from his own words: <<The most important teachers of my life have been Seiji Irimaji Sensei, Hohan Soken Sensei and Kochinda Saburo Sensei, because they were role models for me, in the martial art as in life. They taught me the old bujutsu of Okinawa and the importance of having a big heart. Irimaji Sensei taught me the secrets of oldest karate, opening my mind on how it’s linked to the ancient Chinese fighting and how it’s important to rediscover its roots. I remember that Soken Sensei often told me about the Matsumura family and about the importance that this family had in the development of karate. Kochinda Sensei taught me the history and technique of the ancient Okinawan kobudo and our traditions. I think I’m very lucky to have met them and trained myself with these living legends of Okinawa>>. The biggest dream of Yabiku Sensei is to spread the Sinzanryu Karate Kobudo, preserving the art as it was handed down, without changes and according to the most orthodox spirit. Yabiku Sensei often taught, in the past, kata or techniques to people outside of his school, both Okinawans and foreigners. For example, it’s known that some famous masters of Okinawa (... omissis ...) often sent their sons to the home of Yabiku Sensei to learn kata from Koshiroryu or Matsumura Seito Shorinryu. Yabiku Sensei, however, didn’t teach publicly for a long time, and the last decade he had very few "internal students" initiated into the Sinzanryu system; Prof Angelo Bonanno, Koshinkan Shibu-cho for Italy, now he’s ni-daime 二代 目 (second generation) for Sinzanryu and currently the only one authorized to teach the complete program of the system.

Karate & Kobudo

UCHINAA-DII AND CH'UAN-FA WISELY MIXED

The Sinzanryu karate of Yabiku Sensei is the result of its 60 years of training in Okinawa styles, and the research of Chinese roots, realized in over 35 years of study of Koshiroryu. The system, in fact, includes methods and techniques of oldest karate, with clear roots in indigenous Tii and animals imitation styles of Chinese Ch'uan-fa. The Sinzanryu includes the fight method of the famous Koshiro family (commonly known as Kojo), and rare kata of Hakutsuru-ken (White Crane Fist) method, that was imported from China. The school also wants to preserve and spread the widest concept of an old Okinawan karate that in the past was called "village karate", as it was practiced when there was no distinction of styles as conceived today. Therefore you can also learn techniques of other methods of Shuri-te and Nahate, and that thanks to the great experience and knowledge of Yabiku Sensei. The study program of Sinzanryu, specifically, has a number of kata of Shuri-

te as the technical basis for beginners and intermediate level, and kata of the Koshiroryu and Hakutsuru-ken as the core of the system for advanced students: - from the Matsumura Seito Shorinryu - Naihanchi, Pinan, Paisai, Rohai and Kushanku. These kata are most likely rooted in Wuxing-quan, the style of the Five Animals of Ch'uan-fa, with the strong influence of the White Crane Fist; - from the Koshiroryu - Tenkan, Kukan, Chikan, Hakko, Hakkaku, Hakuryu. These forms have probable roots in Xingyi-quan (Box Body and Mind), being in fact a mix of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac of Ch'uan-fa; - from the Hakutsuru-ken system - Shorinji-ken, Nipaipo, Sesan, Ruken Sanchin, Tsuru Sanchin, Matsumura Hakutsuru, Fukien Hakutsuru. All these kata come from the Baihe-quan of Fujian Ch'uan-fa (or Fukien Hakutsuru-ken) cleverly fused with Okinawan techniques, with minor influences from other styles of imitation, especially the Tiger style. These kata, in addition to teaching the techniques typical of Crane Fist, provide useful exercises of kikou (qi-gong) and represent the depth of the system. The Sinzanryu is an extremely aggressive fight system, which harmoniously blends the typical features of Chinese styles of imitation

“The Sinzanryu includes the fight method of the famous Koshiro family (commonly known as Kojo), and rare kata of Hakutsuru-ken (White Crane Fist) method, ”

“The Sinzanryu karate of Yabiku Sensei is the result of its 60 years of training in Okinawa styles, and the research of Chinese roots, realized in over 35 years of study of Koshiroryu.”

Karate & Kobudo

Karate & Kobudo with native Uchinaa-dii, with particular emphasis on the features from the method of the White Crane. The most important feature of Sinzanryu, therefore, is its real nature as a fight method inspired by the imitation styles of animals; kata that arise from Koshiroryu method, in fact, are founded on techniques and tactics related to the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Specifically, the three Kata Tenkan, Kukan and Chikan, contain a total of 12 kamae-gata (or forms of guard positions); each of them represents an animal and characterizes its performance. The three advanced kata, Hakko, Hakkaku and Hakuryu, are respectively based on the styles White Tiger, White Crane and White Dragon. The strategy of Sinzanryu becomes better as the practice leads to mastery of the techniques that are derived from the White Crane Fist, summit considered ideal technical system. The Sinzanryu, unlike most other styles of karate, uses a little bit of seiken-tsuki technique; it mostly uses the tate-tsuki, the ippon-ken, the hiji-uchi, the nikute-uchi, the shuto-uchi and shotei-uchi. It is a style full of tegumi (or tui-te), ie techniques of joint dislocation, which in the orthodox jargon of the system are identified as techniques to shake the branches and leaves, and tear the reeds. The heiho-jutsu (strategy) of Sinzanryu is complex and consists in various autonomous tactics linked together; the focal point is the ongoing implementation of the atemi-no-jutsu (commonly known as kyusho-jutsu) to annihilate the opponent at the first moment when you break out on him. The techniques are chained to leave no time to react; each technique can act as a barrier to the attacks of the opponent but at the same time it opens the gate to the next technique, and all techniques are taken with the intention to hit the body and cause pain. As all old styles of karate, the soul of Sinzanryu lies in its kata, because in them the karateka finds all the typical technical vocabulary of the system, the fight tactics and the indispensable energy workout. All kata of Sinzanryu are unique in their enbusen and in their techniques, since there is no other style of karate that has similar kata to those of this system.

Karate & Kobudo

“Currently the Sinzanryu includes the study of traditional weapons such rokushaku-bo, sai, tunfa, nunchaku, kama, eku, with the addition of less used weapons such as tan-bo nitan-bo, tsue-bo and yawara-bo.” LEGACY OF A TECHNICAL & CULTURAL TRADITION

The Sinzanryu, as mentioned above, includes not only the fight with their empty hands, in the sense of karate, but also the study of fight methods with typical weapons of Okinawan tradition. Such as any dojo in Okinawa, also for Koshinkan it is of utmost importance to preserve the ancient indigenous tradition, and Yabiku Sensei believes that kobudo has an high technical and cultural value; for this reason, thanks to his practice completed under various well-known masters of Okinawa, he has incorporated in the Sinzanryu system the methods of Matayoshi line and Yamanniryu (or Yamaneryu), as well as some rare kata imported from China. Currently the Sinzanryu includes the study of traditional weapons such rokushaku-bo, sai, tunfa, nunchaku, kama, eku, with the addition of less used weapons such as tan-bo nitan-bo, tsue-bo and yawara-bo. It is important to highlight that the large number of proposed kata, of empty hand and weapons, is linked precisely to the research and preservation of historical and technical roots of karate and kobudo, as well as it’s linked to the opportunity to learn techniques and tactics for fight that lead students to discover by themself the Way that most suits them. The Sinzanryu is also a very spiritual creed, and Yabiku Sensei is a very wise teacher. He often refers to the traditional philosophies and indigenous culture to reflect on aspects of life, and tells anecdotes lived with his beloved masters or told him by them during their training. Sensei often says that the Sinzanryu can be practiced only by those who have a great kokoro (heart and soul); he says that simplicity is the most complex and important technique, in the doctrine of fight such as in the doctrine of morals. The karateka must be a simple person, with pure heart: it will lead to the correct Way to become a real strong karateka, and one day to have full mastery in the Sinzanryu. This article was authorized by Yabiku Sensei, and it’s an extract from the technical manual written for the most part by the Master. It will be soon edited by his direct student, Prof Angelo Bonanno, with permission of the teacher.
