"Man invented God out of fear, so the problem is not God, is fear." (U.P. Krishnamurti) hat which accommodates to its real nature tends to persist, what acts against its essence ends prematurely. We living beings are faced with a steady wind, a permanent and sustained opposition in our wandering through existence; it's the wind of life. Castaneda called it "la tumbadora" (the conga), and he maintained that all living things were continuously and indiscriminately hit by "fire" balls launched against our energy bubbles. When they found a crack, the knocking, always persistent, insisted until the bubble broke. That's the way the seers of his lineage saw death. The image, as disturbing as it may be, seems nonetheless very descriptive. The wind of life, sometimes gusty, stormy others, constantly challenges us as individuals, questioning our view of ourselves, of our desires and goals. Shaping out our structure against such wind is taking a stand in front of life itself. Keep our sails deployed in a storm is as stupid as keeping them furled with a good tailwind. We are not all the same type of sailboat; our masts do not have the same capacity or strength, our keel has not the same draught, but at the end we all can decide whether or not to raise the sails, we all can consciously steer the helm. That is freedom and nothing else. When we living beings live according to our nature, we are naturally adopting and adapting the best position concerning the winds of life. When in a contrived way we insist on a structure or position other than what is our own, the friction, that grows thanks to the obstruction created in the face of the winds of fate, will lead us sooner rather than later to calamity. The promethean indefatigable efforts of us human beings have distanced us in a continuous way from our animal nature. Eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was the first act in that respect. However, such possibility was in our nature: cataloguing the world, perceiving it through analysis, to finally submit it to the vision of reason. We follow a possible path, pushed by the winds of life: more awareness, bigger complexity. Forward, upward, evolution so imposed it. Only yesterday we got off the tree to stand on two legs. Today we build the information society. It's been very little time, if we see it from a biological perspective. Evolutionary changes in biology require much more time to mature. From the moment that Homo sapiens appears, there are no meaningful differences between our structure and our earliest ancestors. It seems that we have just devoted ourselves to explore the possibilities of a structure that possesses a much greater potential than we ever had imagined: the human brain. The big subsequent changes have taken place much more at a cultural level than in the field of biology. Every culture is based on the taboo. Once the evil has been defined, the good remains by discard. The world is then divided into shadows and lights. It was a great tool to help us survive and prosper, but its appearance started
T
early to create contradictions between our biological nature and our individual function. In the essential we are still mammals, with proper software installed on our own mainframe, but doing functions of something else. Here is the fundamental base of confusion, pain and perplexity of the human being. We've never felt comfortable in this made-to-measure suit, a gift from the requirements of evolution. Our new status as "civilized" has given us magnificent synaptic connections and a lot of new skills, of course, at the expense of others. As we love to glorify ourselves, we've been worshiping the golden calf with stubborn obstinacy. Thumbs, that made us what we are, now we use them to play Playstation. Meanwhile, we seek without finding a definition that takes us out of the animal world, which doesn't suit us and looks rough. A claim that is nothing but a line made in the desert sand, and which the wind of life keeps erasing all the time. In this undertaking, we have come to sequence the genes of the species and define structurally where that line is, but it resulted to be so infinitesimal that we have not yet awakened from the shock. Functionally we have not even managed to mark it. A Japanese scientist ended a few weeks ago with another of the human myths - that of the "skilled" Homo Sapiens , making a test with computers to a group of Japanese university students, who lost by a landslide against a group of chimpanzees. It turned out that they had greater speed and retentive to highlight a series alphanumeric display. What a fiasco! Neither Citius, nor Altius, nor Fortius! And, what is more, we are not even more skillful! As if that were not enough, today to survive on our own in nature, we have fewer options than Maradona playing basketball. Have we squandered our genetic capital? Is soccer all we can expect out of eons of evolution of life on the Earth? I have much appreciation for the human, to paraphrase Groucho Marx, despite it's a club that admits characters like me, but above all, and of course, precisely by the fact of belonging to it. We have thrived as bugs and we have become the real scourge of the planet, but I don't cease to be amazed by the achievements of some of my genetic siblings. A few have truly done great things, even though the majority is, and has been, far away from reaching the standards or giving the minimum required to be really considered members of such an exquisite club. So, watching history as a whole, we are disgusting. Few lights in a panorama of deep darkness. We live immersed in fear and we invent gods customized for us. Accordingly, as U. P. Krishnamurti says, the problem is not in the gods, is in fear. Put the bow, whatever your destination, braving the winds of life. How not to fear the unknown? We fear the changes of a weather report that at any moment can bring us the storm. And rightly we fear, as the strength of character and knowledge, our only grip on such anxieties, are available to very few, and because even the most clever, skillful and dexterous have foundered ever. What is
bullfighting? They asked Master Rafael Gallo, and he said: “I don't know. I thought Joselito knew ... and he was killed by a bull Seville. There is nothing unnatural in fear, only insanity or unconsciousness allow us to do without it. Bravery is the only answer, not as contrary to fear, but as a force of its own, an engine itself that pushes us unconsciously toward a desired goal, the more often driven by forces hard to explain. Fear it is not destroyed or fought, as we can't fight the heartbeat; it's a dish that comes with the menu of life; all we can do is to administer our reaction to it, retrain our instinct, not cancel it. The closer to its essential nature is the form we adopt in front of the winds of life, the merrier. Profiling yourself in the face of a hurricane is wise and not a cowardly fact. Standing bold and challenging in the bow may look good in the movies, but in real life boats are commanded from the bridge. Hard times are coming, storms and various hurricanes will batter our sailing. No port where to take shelter amid the ocean of life and I see some who still go around displaying full sail. Meanwhile we still can resort to training, focusing, getting stronger, firm in body and character, because times will come to test our capabilities. The winds of life, for sure, at some point will flog our course and then, only then, all we have trained will acquire its true meaning. In the navigation of your living I wish you good journey. I will not say good weather, since this will change for sure at any time, but I will talk about wisdom and strength to hold the helm, to know when to deploy and when to lower the sails, and, if possible, enjoy all this with intensity, thus honoring the best of the human potential and enjoying the miracle of living.

Great Champions Tito laid it to me in the most clear and straightforward way: "Do you want me to do what is usually done in all the videos? snapped at me suddenly before he started recording. Surprised by the question I answered: "I want you to share whatever you want to teach, no one better than you knows what interests more the students of grappling". The outcome: two advanced technical works in the most varied positions, both offensive and defensive. But do not deceive yourselves, when we say advanced we really mean advanced! If you don't have a good grappling level, the techniques that you will see will overcome you. Nothing more need be said, because we are talking about a very advanced level; anyone who can read the truth in TITO's movements will probably be amazed at the creativity of his combinations, and especially the ease and smoothness with which he develops them. If your level
is not high enough, you'll need another type of video, a video that offers step by step explanations, and that we will do at a later stage. For the moment, simply be amazed with the talent, creativity and Mastery of this man ... amazing champion, excellent fighter, great teacher. Alfredo Tucci

Budo International: Tito, first of all thank you very much for granting us this interview. The first question is almost mandatory: what was your first contact with BJJ? Tito Beltrán: My first contact with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was in October 1997, which was when Robin Gracie arrived in Spain; the very first day he came we trained with him, but before that, I was doing MMA, where we already added some ground fighting in our training programs. B.I.: From that first day that you put on your Gi until today, how do you assess the development of BJJ in our country? T.B.: It has changed a lot, before we were four and now we are four hundred thousand, the change has been amazing, now you find Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practically everywhere, quality schools, there are increasingly more and more fighters, new people, people that are already consecrated, who have a top level. There are good fighters in Spain, very good.
B.I.: Seen from the outside as a mere spectator, one has the feeling that there are people teaching BJJ with a low graduation and I think that at the end this hurts the art itself. What is your view of this problem that is happening in our country? T.B.: People are free to choose what they want; undoubtedly the higher the graduation, the better the quality of the teachings, at least in theory, but I don't consider that a real problem; everyone has something to teach, however small. B.I.: Does it happen in other countries? T.B.: I do not know, really. I don't know what happens in other countries, but I think that today, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is widespread and there are many graduate people everywhere; if in a determined place, unfortunately, there isn't any black belt, but there's a purple or brown belt who are teaching, well, that's not bad either. B.I.: Tito, you accumulate an astounding trophy case, can you do memory of the most important titles?

T.B.: So by heart, with the IBJJF, I won twice the Rome Open; Madrid once; then Munich, Zurich and Copenhagen, in all of them I won in my Weight and in Absolute. Then I won two European Championships without kimono (Weight and Absolute), a European Championship of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Weight and Absolute) and then the Grappling World Championships in my weight class. I had previously won four Gracie Cups. I've won five Behring Cups, two consecutive UGC (Ultimate Grappling Challenger), which is an untimed competition in Germany, where only finalization is rewarded. I won the Paris Open, Switzerland, Vittel; I won the Spain Championship (FELODA) on my Weight and Absolute. I won the Gracie International Open; ADCC selectives I have won two, Weight, besides one Absolute. I do not know, a lot, I have over 800 fights with only 31 defeats. B.I.: Of all these, which one do you recall with most affection? T.B.: Well, they're all fondly remembered, but perhaps the European Championship last year was special for me because I had a medical problem that kept me in hospital thirteen days and missed the trip I had to the World Championship, after having paid all, and at the end I couldn't make it. But I fought the European Championship final against the one that had won the World Championship that I hadn't been able to attend, and I finished him, and for me that was very special, you know, because what I had was serious and I even thought about a possible withdrawal or something; I don't know, doctors had scared me somehow and for me that was extra special. Then they forced me to fight in the Absolute, which I tried to refuse because I had just left the hospital, but I won too, winning both semifinal and final by finalization, which was super important to me. B.I.: You have fought in BJJ, Grappling and MMA events. What is your assessment of these experiences? T.B.: Being a competitor, for me, fighting is something super important, it’s something I love, I need; it's something that makes me

feel alive, makes me overcome fears, makes me grow and the valuation for me is a ten, no doubt, and may it last! B.I.: As a Master, you created the Crazy Academies, undoubtedly one more responsibility, since the name of these academies is closely linked to yours. How many of them are currently in Spain? And how do you managed to control that the BJJ of each is optimal? T. B.: There are Crazy Academies in Valencia, Castellón, Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Ibiza, Majorca, A Coruña, Asturias, Leon and Malaga. Each school has its own instructor on which I trust; in some they are black belts, in others they are instructors with less graduation, and what I do with them is organize seminars twice a year, and of course, they know they can make any query, but basically I teach them in the seminars or they come to train with me. B.I.: And then one day you decide to pack your bags and go to Brazil to drink from the original sources of your art... what do you remember of that experience?

T.B.: Well, one more anecdote, I grabbed my suitcase and I went there for twenty-six days, I think I was training. Brazil is a super nice, very cool site. Workouts are very different from here, in the sense that there is much more quality because they've been training for much longer, there are many more black belts in every class. Training sessions are tough. Competition training is very, very hard, and it takes you to see a little of the essence.
Although today there are very good teams and places to train with an impressive quality, in fact all champions are established outside, and you can find them in the US or even in Europe; in Spain there are gyms with quality comparable to what you can find out there; of course, we still need to grow more in Spain and as it grows it will be more like in there, but Brazil has a special vibe; it's like doing Muay Thai in Thailand when you can really practice it any-

Dedication, discipline, respect and will, will, will, a strong will. B.I.: What are your next goals? T.B.: In March I have the European Championship and the Open in Rome, I will do both and then I'm going have surgery in my back because I have a lot of pain and I can't train at ease, and God willing I'd like to do the two World Cups, Brazilian and Grappling. B.I.: Do you expect any sponsorship to fund these adventures? T.B.: Fortunately, I have enough people who support me, otherwise it would be impossible. Nutridik, Growbarato, Hard Wolf, Hoplitas Guerreros, D'Angelo Tatto, ADOG Gym, Tarracosbull International, Values and Premier Service. B.I.: Would you like to add something? T.B.: Of course, I wish to thank Alfredo Tucci and the Budo International magazine for the opportunity to work with them. Also one important thing: I would like that we all continued to work together in Spain for the union and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; that would be a small request. Finally I want to state that everything I do I dedicate to my son Yan Beltran.

Comprehensive or Integral Vovinam is simply going back to the Founder's true Vovinam. The goal of the founder was clearly and openly declared: "Harvesting effective techniques, assimilate their essence and transform them into Vovinam techniques", and indeed this concept still remains in force and is mandatory for all Vovinam Masters in the world. Vovinam is then a research concept to achieve a super effective style. However, today 90% of Vovinam teachers forget it and bend to a program too loaded, too fixed, too aesthetic and sometimes completely ineffective in numerous techniques. Comprehensive Vovinam is simply rediscovering the original essence of Master Nguyen Loc's art. For that, we have the principles, the basic techniques, and we just have to go back to work out the effective way of every technique and apply the founding principle. In this DVD, by the hand of Master Patrick Levet, we will study the basis of Integral Vovinam, threats and knife attacks, integral counterattacks, and defense against Dam Thang (direct fist) Dam Moc (hook punch), Dam Lao (javelin punch) as well as basic leg levers.

Japan and the Arts of War Throughout history, we see that tales, for the most part, differ from reality when this is presented to us. Perhaps the majority of fables arise from the specific view of historians and not by a careless view of the facts. We can imagine that history has the role of portraying and exemplifying in the way that fits, and not portraying accurately a distant era, to which we do not have access by scientific means. Romanticism and the good intention of historians portray us the nobility of the time and its social forms. The reality of forms and their use are beyond the just mentioned thought - we can see this today. World events shown on television, never manage to portray with images and texts, the pain felt by those who witness the events. The same goes for history and search. Many of the techniques trained within the forms presented in traditional schools, correspond to existing realities for the period in which local needs dictated the best way to solve a situation. We can analyze this through the Samurai tradition. However much the forms of war have been devastating for the time, the techniques developed corresponded to the forms presented by the enemies. That is, it would be difficult today that the local police, with swords and spears, could combat the actions of terrorists and smugglers armed with modern weapons. This is a logical and rational way of thinking. Thus, it is a fact that traditional schools watch out for the historical conservation of their techniques, fed by the romanticism and passion for the arts of war. The reality, whether current or former, accounts for the truth factor and does not allow us dream by this fact. The reality is expressed by the events that are in effect for all and not by assumptions. Dreams allow us to travel and the truth brings us back to reality. However, both aspects are important when well understood and worked out. It is understood by looking in depth, that the classic and the modern are not found within the current combative realities of this XXI century. The atomic bomb is a key example of this separation, but in our dreams, they will always walk together.

Whether through adaptation to moder nity or by the conservation ... past and present become one ..., but they remain consistent in their own positioning. I'll explain it better availing myself of history. The Japanese begin to organize themselves as a warrior people in the Kamakura Era. However, this period, led by samurai warriors, was characterized by new religious trends that emerged and the intense search for spiritual support, bringing Buddhism to the people. Up to the Heian Era (794-1192), this form of religion was practiced almost exclusively by the nobles. With the popularization of the Buddhist creed, various sects, called "Kamakura New Buddhism", arose. The emergence of new sects was driven by the idea of the end of the world (mapp shis ), that spread all over in the late Heian Era, caused by social instability - a consequence of the war between the Taira and Minamoto clans -, by misery and calamities. The monks Eisai (1141-1215) and Dogen (1200-1253) studied in China (Sung Dynasty) with the Zen sect, which uses meditation to attain Nirvana, and when they returned to Japan, they respectively founded the Rinzai-sh and the S t -sh sects.
Bugei Shinran (1173-1262), a disciple of the monk H nen (1133-1212), founded the J do-Shinsh sect, and at the time of the attack of the Mongols, the monk Nichiren (1222-1282) founded the Nichiren-sh sect, that preached salvation of the soul and the country. All these new sects have in common the simplicity and lack of a rigorous and ascetic practice, allowing anyone to practice it and find the salvation of the human soul. When Yoshimitsu, the third Shogun of the Ashikaga clan, settled in Kyoto, at the beginning of the Era Muromachi, Japan saw a period of relative peace and prosperity, broken by the nin War, which promoted the emergence of the Sengoku daimy , literally, the feudal lords of the countries in war, who conquered the power through force leading Japan to over a hundred years of endless battles.
The nin War (1467 ~ 1477) The succession to the throne of the Sh gun (supreme commander of the samurai, or military dictator in Japan) was the reason for the nin Revolution. Hino Tomiko (1440-1496), wife of the eighth Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1436-1490), wanted his son Yoshihisa (1465-1489) to occupy the throne. To that end, she asked for help to the Shugo Daimy (commander of the national security), Mochitoyo Yamana, later monk S zen (1404-1473). But Yoshimasa had already appointed his brother Yoshimi (1439-1491) as his successor, because his eldest son had died as a child and the marriage had no children for more than ten years. But right after Yoshimi had designated successor, Tomiko became pregnant and gave birth to a child. Yoshimasa asked for help to Hosokawa Katsumoto (1430-1473) - up to that moment, Kanrei (a kind of Prime Minister) - to keep his brother as his successor. This conflict served as a pretext for the two great feudal lords measured their forces to conquer greater powers. The balance of the nin War was very bad for Kyoto, as the city was reduced to
ashes. The two leaders, S zen and Katsumoto, died from disease. However, Hino Tomiko became rich during the war, lending money to the feudal lords and charging interest. Besides, the will of Yoshihisa's wife prevailed and her son Yoshimasa was the ninth Shogun of the Ashikaga clan.
Hino Tomiko (1440 ~ 1496) Daughter of nobles, Tomiko married the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa at 16 years. Yoshimasa, then 21, already had several concubines and children. Tomiko is known as one of the villainous characters in the history of Japan, for having caused the nin War, a fact that led the archipelago to a war of over a hundred years, until the country's unification, achieved by Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Yoshimasa's wife was not only one of the main people responsible for the incident nin, but she also charged tolls to the daimyos who came to Kyoto to participate in the revolt, and created the tax transit for people and goods entering the capital. The tax, an abusive measure, was withdrawn after the rebellion of peasants, transporters and traders. Despite her fame and her controversial attitudes, Tomiko was a strong and cultured woman, and with her fortune she kept the art, which flourished at that time and that lasts until today. Although she played a major role in the Japanese political scene, Tomiko was very unhappy as a woman. Her marriage failed and she wasn't lucky with her children. Her firstborn died as a child; her second son, Yoshihisa, was neither a good son nor a good politician, despite the many problems she had gone through to make him Shogun; the third son, whom she loved most
Bugei
and had placed great hopes, died at 16 years of age. Yoshihisa, with whom Tomiko did not have a good relationship, died at 25. At age 56, Tomiko died, six years after her husband Yoshimasa died and after participating in the succession of the tenth Shogun, Yoshiki, son of Yoshimi.
Sengoku-jidai - The War Country Era (1467 ~ 1573) While the feudal lords (shug daimy ) warred in Kyoto, the vassals who had remained in their fiefdoms, usurped power, ushering in a war among the strongest, to try to conquer the domain of Japan, supplanting their superiors, or betraying friends and relatives, to gain more power and land. Those new ascending lords were called Sengoku daimy . They built castles on top of the mountains, where they could have a good visibility in the case of an enemy attack, but they usually inhabited mansions built on the flat part, at the foot of the mountain, around which cities arose. Outstanding amongst those Sengoku daimy was Oda Nobunaga, of Owari (Aichi Prefecture), a cold and great strategist, who annihilated his foes one after another, and even ordered to burn the Enryakuji Temple, because its monks had disobeyed his orders. In 1573, Ashikaga Yoshiaki (1537-1597), the fifteenth Shogun, was expelled from Kyoto by Oda Nobunaga, thus closing the Muromachi Era. As we can see, when compared with other cultures and dynasties, Japan was slow to develop its specific forms of war and how to organize them. Thus, we understand that if Bujutsu is a millenarian art, as some claim, a reflection is needed on what we call - by force of language - literally, a historical period. We cannot compare Japan with India, which has records of bodily practices of at least 13,000 years. Let's be realistic and let's try to elucidate the truths contained in history.
Bugei
“We cannot compare Japan with India, which has records of bodily practices of at least 13,000 years. Let's be realistic and let's try to elucidate the truths contained in history.
Every culture developed its skills of war according to its historical reality. We couldn't tell today what would it be the result of a clash among warriors arrived from different countries and eras. They would have to always face advantages and disadvantages! With a more realistic view, the form is not simply form, since the form depends on the mind and the mind is not simply mind, because the mind depends on the way. Mind and form create and negate one another. What exists, exists in relation to what does not exist, and what does not exist, does not exist in relation to what exists. That's a true vision! Through this vision nothing is seen and nothing is unseen. Such vision reaches all the ten directions without seeing: because nothing is seen; because not seeing is to see; because seeing is not to see. What mortals see are illusions. True vision is independent of seeing. And engaged in a battle, real or imagined, mind and world are opposite and the vision is born where both meet. When the mind does not stir internally, the world doesn't stand out outwardly. When world and mind are both transparent, that is the true vision and such understanding is the true understanding.

Master Shaolin Shi Yanti is a monk of the 34th generation of the Songshan Shaolin Temple and a direct disciple of Venerable Abbot Shi Yong Xin. In this his first work for Budo International, he presents the Luohan Shibashou, one of the older and most representative basic forms of empty hand of the Shaolin Temple. According to the book "Shaolin Quan Pu", in the Sui Dynasty, the Shaolin's warrior monks developed a series of simple movements, chosen according to the "18 Luohan statues", hence the name Luohan Shou Shi Ba (18 hands of Luohan). The style of this Taolu is particular and in its continuous movements can be clearly seen combinations of real and unreal movements, defense and counterattack, and a variety of hidden movements. The main hand techniques in this Taolu are those of the palms, and learning requires great agility and coordination, as well as mastering the positions Xubu, Dingbu, Gongbu and Mabu and their features.

Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a very brutal and devastating Art. The Arts concept its to dominate and take over battleground and space, fast dominating space and engulfing opponents to prevent them from being able to use their weapons or body. Once space is acquired, the base and angle are taken to control opponents rotation or projection, rooting or uprooting is produced from the smallest expression of touch or angle and base position, this we call “Lengket” or sticky. Keeping very close to opponents when striking or using a weapon and putting opponents on “Slywa” or weightless stage of spinal and muscle misalignment. Once rooting takes place, the strike makes massive contact in the body that has no muscle or skeletal protection. “Sambuts” are finishes meaning something very hard to walk away from especially when compression of neck or spine, so finishing means its a done deal. The opposite of that is a “Buang” that stands for throws less devastating in the beginner levels but taught to learn mechanics that in later phases of development of the student or practioner can be modified to “Sambuts” for devastating throws. Compressing skeletal structure, weapons and body structures or striking, grapping defense and offence are all played and studied in our platforms. In this video there's a beginner “Pantjar” platform, also the “Jurus”, which are the playbooks of the system of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak, are played here. This platform teaches where to be in position to attacker, the platform is 3 dimensional and teaches where opponents body's alignments are the weakest to point of contact the platform. It also teaches how to deal with multiple opponents and space needed, base angle and levers are all play here. Hope you enjoy my small offering into a vast large Art. “Hormat Terima Kasi”.

KEYSI AND VALUE OF OUR SLIPS "We mustn't tear down our dreams; we must tear down the barriers that prevent us from fulfilling our dreams."
If, being a boy, I had been asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I would have answered: "I don't know what I want to be, but I do know that my destiny will always be linked to the Mines of Utrillas". Sincerely, dreaming is very important, but dreaming is not enough; there is a long way to do, the way of life, so that at the end you can feel proud of who you are and where you have reached, within a code of honor without exceptions
I
dreamed every night that upon waking I'd be somewhere else making my dream come true. Dreaming that I wouldn't wake up to enter the mine was the straws at which I grabbed and knew I shouldn't loosen the grip, but the alarm clock had no mercy, and at 5 '00 magic was broken and I returned to reality and step on solid ground, and one more day repeating to myself in the mirror: "Don't give up!"
Keysi After working in the coal mines for seven years and dreaming every day with a different destiny, while being proud of my origins, like every child of a miner, I remember that my desire was to reach the age to enter the mines, we are born with coal in our veins; I turned 14 and there I was with other children of miners, then appeared our guardian angel, Mr. "Toco"; this man taught us to survive in the depths of the earth, thanks for all his advice! It was our first day and the time had come to put on the safety mask and the light battery at the waist with a thick leather belt, fix the light on the helmet, adjust the helmet to our head and start walking toward the entrance to the mine; it was my first day of seven years of work inside; sincerely, at the end, you get used to the new environment and you stop worrying about what you want in life, who you are, where you are going and why you do what you do; now I look back, a long but short period of time has elapsed, I have changed in many aspects, but nothing has changed in me about who I am and where I come from; I was born a miner and will always be a miner. To understand Keysi you have to know where it comes from; working in a mine
teaches you to work in team with one goal: surviving! No matter where you are from or the religion you practice or the color of your skin, inside the earth we are all black; coal gives us that special color that makes us all equal; we might have been arguing with someone during the weekend, but inside, when danger seems to be awaiting that you have an oversight to end your own life, there are no differences, no suspicion or any doubt, we are all one; either all of us get out or we all I cried a lot without knowing why I did so, I saw my mother crying and that made me cry too. One day after hearing the siren of the mine, I didn't understand what was going on, but I could see that my mother was very sad; I asked her what was happening and her response was: "Don't worry, everything's O.K." We were used to hear the siren, but that day it had a very special sound. That day I discovered the
Keysi difference between a sound and another, that day I woke up to the real world and that special sound had announced that something terrible had occurred inside the mine, I understood why my mother cried and I realized that the death Knight had returned to walk through the bowels of that small mining town; my mother was always afraid, like all my friends' mothers and miners' wives... who had fallen that day? Throughout my life as a professional in the defense circles, I have tried to do two things at each seminar; on the one hand, convey the idea that if you really want something in life, effort and hard work is not enough, you have to believe in what you do and fight for who you want to be; and secondly transmit the best of me, Keysi is the result of a dream come true, is the consequence of a Dreaming mind. I differentiate it as a strong and open creative mind, always willing to learn and to be an Apprentice forever. During this time I've discovered many things within me that I ignored, because I first needed to know who I am and where I'm going without ever forgetting where I come from.

What happens when two people practice Chi-Sao, what is the meaning of their practice and what the objectives? In this 3rd DVD, "Chi Sao from the base to an advanced level," Sifu Salvador SĂĄnchez addresses perhaps the most important aspect of Wing Chun: ChiSao, the soul of the system itself, which provides the practitioner with some special characteristics which are completely different from others, and gives him great virtues. This role deals with some aspects quite basic in principle, but as you delve into them, they'll be surprising to you. It is a very clear feature traditional Chinese culture; what it's very obvious at first glance, it nevertheless contains a second or third reading, which will surely change your approach, practice and understanding. We will discuss how to practice Chi Sao through our working drills and how to apply those drills, that ability in a sparring, linking certain concepts, perhaps not so much tied to traditional Kung Fu, such as biomechanics, structures, knowledge of physics, etc., in order to obtain better results in our practice.

No one can doubt that Raúl Gutiérrez, besides being a devoted Master, is also an extraordinary coach. And he is the living proof of this, as he remains in top shape, showing a biological age much lower than chronological. So, who could be better qualified than him to teach you training techniques? Continuing his series of articles about kicking, Master Raúl Gutiérrez discusses below some kick training exercises. In next installments, the Master will also break down other training techniques with weights, arm techniques and combat training.

Same exercise but now crossing the left leg to gain depth and power of impact. Perform same shifting with the right leg. 3 or 4 reps in series of 12, 14, 16, 18 or more, according to own capacity. The same exercise is done, stepping back left to right, escaping an attack and then kicking with left leg. Perform series on both sides.

Fu-Shih Kenpo. By RaĂşl GutiĂŠrrez. "Combinations". 5th) From the front guard we perform a right front kick at middle level (Mae Geri Chudan), we now twist our hip to apply a roundhouse kick at high level (Mawashi Geri Jodan) with the same leg, then we withdraw our leg to execute a side kick at high level (Yoko-Geri Jodan). Same exercise but now on the opposite side. 3 or 4 reps in series of 12, 14, 16, 18 or more, according to own capacity. We can find countless possibilities by simply mastering and combining in various ways just these 3 kicks: front kick, side kick and circular kick...
The Raúl Gutiérrez Column Fu-Shih Kenpo. By Raúl Gutiérrez. "Combinations". 6) From the position of the rider (Kiba Dachi), we perform a left roundhouse kick to the lower zone (Gedan), then to the middle zone (Chudan), hereafter a little higher and we end with the upper zone (Jodan). 3 or 4 reps in series of 12, 14, 16, 18 or more, according to own capacity. We will continue our training with different heights alternating combinations. For example; low, high, medium, intermediate area. Or simply low, high. High, low. Low, medium, high or vice versa. And with both legs.

A Foundation built on Redundancy: the first secret to effective tactical pressure point fighting. By Master: Mark S. Gridley Photos: www.budointernational.com he inquisitive practitioner can easily do a quick internet search on the “secrets of pressure point fighting”. As I am an incessantly curious practitioner I did so and yielded 25,600,000 results. While there are many excellent resources available, there were few that started with the first secret of effective pressure point fighting. I have found a number of students searching for the secrets, advanced material, or short cuts, while missing the prime importance of building on the martial basics to develop a foundation for application. I have been very fortunate and I am truly grateful to have received instruction from whom I believe to be some of the best and most knowledgeable teachers in the world. Of course much of my success and learning is due directly to the opportunities and path in which they have helped to provide and guide. As I reflect over the past decades of study I have found one common thread amongst these individuals. They have allowed me to make mistakes and at times to fail so they could open my heart and mind to their teaching and lessons. In every case they began with helping me in building a strong foundation in which their “secrets” augmented, however the basics were always strong enough to stand alone. This is the subject of this article in which my goal will be to encourage practitioners to strengthen their foundation in order to build on the principle of redundancy. As we explore the term foundation the most common thought turns to that of construction such as the load-bearing part of a building. While we can use this a good analogy I prefer the lessor used definition by the Oxford dictionary which is “an underlying basis or principle for something”. This is how a practitioner should view their practice of any “secret”

which requires an in-depth understanding of the principle in which it is based. A simple example is the knowing that the best way to activate a pressure point by striking is to start by learning how to strike effectively first. After building a foundation of efficient striking it is much easier to apply the “secrets or knowledge of method, angle and direction to activate your target effectively. In the Combat Hapkido Tactical Pressure Point program our three defining rules are: 1. Redundancy. You must never solely rely on vital targets/pressure points. All techniques must work because of the incorporation of multiple principles regardless of target activation.
2. Always chose economy of movement. For example, never pass a target to hit another target. Effectiveness is a direct result of proper body mechanics and application of principles. Techniques fail due the improper application of scientific principles, most often due to inefficient movement. 3. Responsibility. There are moral and legal considerations in every situation. You will be held accountable for both your actions and inactions. It is intentional that redundancy is the first rule and reinforces why a strong martial foundation is so important. In professional writing the aspiring authors are encouraged to avoid redundancy in writing because it is may result in

unneeded repetition or overlapping of words. However in engineering the concept of redundancy is critical to increase the reliability of a system or component. This is often a backup or fail safe of some sort. The importance of our study is the basis in which to utilize the engineering principle of redundancy as it applies to martial arts in self-defense. Our goal is to achieve the trifecta of going home safely by avoiding the morgue, the hospital and legal system by overwhelming our threat with numerous redundancies that reinforces a solid foundation. I have been fortunate to meet many people all over the world in seminars that I have attended or even had the honor of sharing at by teaching. I often have asked and received questions about energetic theories or applications of energy methods in pressure point fighting. I enjoy these conversations as it is a fascinating area of study and what seems to be a limitless field of study. However, simply understanding or knowing the elemental theories or energetic concepts has little use if you haven’t yet learned to keep your hands up in self-defense. Some of the best works I’ve been exposed to in my studies have all consistently started with a strong foundation upon which the knowledge could then be applied. Many martial artists are familiar with the often cited quote from the legendary Bruce Lee… “Knowing is
not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.” In order to “apply” we must be in a position that will allow us to “do”. This is what a strong foundation does for the evolving practitioner. A question I often ask myself before chasing after the next secret is whether I have built a foundation upon which to use the knowledge. A comparison would be a student attempting a doctorate in neurological sciences who does not have a good grasp of basic anatomy and physiology. In a self-defense scenario the knowledge that a “cat-stance” lifting your front heel can augment Yin Metal energy is of limit use if you haven’t learned the importance of balance and balance disruption, or even more foundational the at times painful basic of keeping your hands up, while being inundated by multiple attackers. While training I encourage my students and self to focus on the learning which often comes from “pressure testing” applications and concepts. A commonality of these training after action reviews is the lesson of the importance of mastering the basics before trying to apply the advanced concepts. When applying a new “secret” were you able to ensure you were protecting yourself from injury in the process while having a system of fail safes as redundancies? During a recent training event with no less than six very knowledgeable
and experienced Grand Master Pressure Point experts they all emphasized and demonstrated the importance of good anatomical alignment to improve the physiological potential and efficiency of their movement prior to even mentioning a pressure point. This was further affirmation to me that this article was needed as much as any technical discussion on the “secrets”. In summary I hope that you are questioning the strength of your foundation and assessing the redundancies within training as you continue on the journey of knowledge and the exploration of the secrets in pressure point fighting. Of course this article cannot capture this subject in its entirety and you are encouraged to delve deeper to more fully understand this important area of self-defense. In a future article we will begin to dig into more “secrets” if further detail. Of course, you don’t have to wait; all of this information is available through the Tactical Pressure Point DVD instructional series, which you can order directly from Defensive Services International at www.dsihq.com and Budo International at: w w w. b u d o i n t e r n a t i o n a l . n e t . Sifu CHAN KIM MAN (Photo A1) started learning in the school of late Grandmaster Wong Shun Leung (the “King of Talking Hands” and as one of the famous disciple of late Grandmaster Yip Man) from 1978. Sifu Chan Kim Man has been practicing Ving Tsun for over 30 years and teaching Ving Tsun for over 15 years. Siu Lim Tau is the roots of Ving Tsun. Chum Kiu is the combined hand techniques of Siu Lim Tau. Wooden dummy form is the combination practices of Chum Kiu and Biu Jee. Trainings in sticking hands are the application of all those hands skill to generate the reflex action in order to feel the strength and direction of your opponent. Sifu Chan Kim Man would like to introduce some of the commonly used V ing Tsun techniques as below:

Press Punch (Photos C1 to C4 - modelling by Judy Chan and Y.F. Attack and defense operate simultaneously.

Ving Tsun Wooden Dummy Form (Photos G1 to G2 – modelling by W.S. Chung) Rolling Hands comprise of Tan Hand and Low Wing Arm. If your hands are under your opponent’s control, or being dragged sideward into a disadvantageous position, Rolling Hands can disassemble your opponent's control by rolling force. For Rolling Hands with Side Kick, the Rolling Hands can nullify the coming Swiping Kick, while the Side Kick can step onto the knee of your opponent’s balancing leg.
Six and a Half Point Pole (Photo H1 – modelling by Gary S.K. Wong)
Bart Charm Knifes (Photo H1 modelling by Sifu Chan Kim Man)
Six and a Half Point Pole comprise of the shooting pole, pinning pole, barring pole, Leung Yi Dispensing poles, circling pole, pointing diagonally downward and pivoting pole, and diagonal shooting pole. Since the last movement of pole is not completed so we take it as a half step pole. The pole techniques can strengthen the overall power of waist, elbow, shoulder, our lower part of body and stance.
Bart Charm Knifes comprise of chopping, thrusting, dissecting, clipping, cultivating, sinking, circling, and dispensing broadsword. Bart Charm Knifes is the extension of our arms, and its applications are similar to our hand skills. But the way of movement are completely different between them. Stance movement and the rotating force of waist are the focus of Bart Charm Knifes.

He is one of the most interesting Aikido Masters I've ever met. A serene and elegant man in every detail, Nomura has made several DVDs with Budo International and specially a book that has been a great success. Today this book is already available in digital format, and on this occasion, we review its contents with an extract thereof in the form of interview. Alfredo Tucci

Master Kazuo Nomura interviewed by Malet Alexandre B.I.: When did you start Aikido? Kazuo Nomura: I started Aikido in 1969, under the late Bansen Tanaka Shihan. I received the rank of 6th dan in 1982. B.I.: What is Aikido? K.N.: Aikido is a modern martial art consolidated of elements from ancient Japanese Ju-Jitsu and created by Morihei Ueshiba, also named O' Sensei. From a martial art, he transformed it into a way of life (michi, do). Through the practice of the techniques , a mental foundation is built instructs us how to live. O sensei said, that aikido practice and world peace are connected at the individual level. Now many people practice Aikido, and it has spread throughout the world.

B.I.: According to your experience, Aikido is ? K.N.: “The budo of love and peace” it is not about fighting with other people, but as a way of life I can cultivate my awareness. Through practice I improve myself, the way instructs me how to set a goal to perfect my character. The ever unattainable goal is to have the character of God, to have the image of perfection. Osensei said "spiritual training is finished when you die." B.I.: Today's society is unsafe and violent, isn't it difficult to apply the principle of “the budo of Love and peace” in our society? K.N.: When faced with the question of violence, some people think that weapons are necessary. There are also those who think we should just avoid it. This is where we see the first step in bujitsu, moving from violence to the proper use of force. In aikido practice, we want to move from the level of the techniques to the way/Do, to evolve to the next stage. Through our aikido practice we can find the answer to the ultimate question of how to protect ourselves, and how to deal with violence. B.I.: What main teaching from Tanaka Bansen Shihan influences your practice today?
K.N.: Aikido teaches us everything. I especially remember he said “enter from below”. Lower your hips, become one with the movement of entering from below. Whether it's a technique, it applies in daily life too. There is a saying, the rice that has fully ripened, bows it's head. It means that the more a person grows as a human being, the more modest they become. This truly describes him. B.I.: What can we gain through Aikido practice? K.N.: Aikido is a perfect way to defend oneself and stay healthy. Through practice, one can cultivate a sense of peace, which is connected to relaxing the mind. Personal relationships will improve and a feeling of gratitude for everything around you will develop. It's not about the techniques, it's the direction to live your life. B.I.: How does Aikido differs from other martial arts? K.N.: Aikido is quite different from other martial arts in various ways. The techniques are not about fighting and winning. It is training in the way of aspiring for perfection as human being. Seeking peace, and doing one's best to improve yourself is what is unique about Aikido. In Aikido it's important to cooperate with your partner. This means that both people should concentrate on a correct movement. Uke is giving his energy to nage in

order to get the most out of the technique. It's not about who is stronger, but the focus is on perfecting the movement. Part of perfecting the movement is by not forcing it, but finding the most reasonable way to move according to your strength. B.I.: What do you consider “high level Aikido? K.N.: In Aikido we repeat practice one technique at a time because we need to be able to do the technique without thinking about it. Finally we should be able to release our mind and not worry about the movement. We can transcend the form without trying to be particular about it. In this state we can manifest countless possibilities. There are no boundaries, and this is the beginning of experiencing Budo. B.I.: How does Ki function in Aikido? K.N.: I think ki is about consciousness and energy, to become conscious of the other person's movement, and blend with their ki. This also means blending with the energy of the universe (all natural energy). Ki has a connecting force. Even if the person is your enemy, it's about developing a common consciousness with the other person. It's also about recognizing our blessings. B.I.: What would be your advice concerning Aikido practice? K.N.: First of all, we need the power of respiration. intention. Our power should come from our center (tanden), we should drop our weight and establish our sense of center. The sum of our conciousness can be released at once from our tanden. B.I.: Concerning weapons training? K.N.: When one first starts training, using weapons tends to interfere with the learning process of the form and the movement. Once the movement is learnt correctly, I think weapons practice is good, and we should know how to use them. It's also a way to learn about the movement from a different angle. B.I.: What is important for improving? K.N.: Don't be conceited, remember you will never be perfect as you continue your practice. Everyone can always improve. Also, you can only improve if you continue to practice with patience and perseverance. Also, watch good examples, and imitate them. Also being objective about your own skill is very important. Recognize your strengths and weaknesses. B.I.: What is some advice for those who are new to aikido? K.N.: At first remembering all the details of each technique can be overwhelming. Once you remember them, it's stage one. However, many people quit before getting to that stage. As a complete martial art, Aikido is open to every one. Because of this, there is a tendency to approach and study Aikido too superficially. If you don't take you practice seriously, you will only be going through the motions. Therefore, my advice is to try to get a feeling for the

movement, and don't worry about the details as much. No one can do it perfectly from the beginning, just try to do it as well as you can, being careful to watch those around you. B.I.: What are the other stages? K.N.: The first stage is to follow the principles of the techniques. You can strengthen your body and increase your concentration. The second stage is to think and to set goals for improvement. You become flexible and readjust yourself according to your needs to reach the goals. You become moderate, stable physicaly and mentaly therefore your energy flows more easily. The third stage is to practice, in japanese we use the word "Keiko". Within the third stage, your practice at the dojo and in daily life are one. Whatever you do, whatever you think, you are aware that it is part of your practice. Everything is practice therefore your training becomes formless but complete. It is Budo. Your energy blends with everything. You feel things before you hear them, see them, smell them or touch them. In brief, the system of these 3 stages can lead you to 3 important martial skills: • 1) Solidity • 2) Control. • 3) sensitivity (The opponent is already defeated before the fight begins)

B.I.: What do you mean by the opponent is already defeated, you said it was not about winning ?! K.N.: I mean that the goal is to conquer without battle and not conquer with battle. My training is founded on this principal. B.I.: How does one feel and practice this principal? K.N.: Just by training yourself, by being truly kind to others. Start in your own family and in the dojo. Then you will be more aware of the space around you and it's reality. B.I.: Thank you Master Nomura.

"What beautifies the desert is that it hides a well of water somewhere." Antoine de Saint-Exupery "What we know is a water drop; what we ignore is the ocean. Isaac Newton Flow doesn't mean being sloppy; definitely, water is not so, for it doesn't leave any corner uncovered... it reaches everywhere! As asturian people say, "water has a very fine snout". Unhurried, coupling to the circumstances, water is a metaphor for the persistence and extreme adaptability. It's the paradigm of changing in the form without transforming the essence. Water catalyzes life; without water, the land dries and gets barren; and the fire, without a controller, spreads everywhere and the air, turned into a sandstorm, cannot carry the fertility of the clouds, or the force of the changes. Even iron is wrought by the use of fire in the forges! Water is the cradle of all life, the primary livelihood of both inanimate and animate beings, all of them "bags" of hotter and hotter waters, according to their degree of evolution, and adapted to a change that we accompany, of which we are part, and not guilty, as some would have us believe. The "terminal sin" is the JudeoChristian guilt of environmentalism. Water comforts us, cleanses us, and blesses us. Wet in the rivers of the moment, we swim, fight, wreck... Flowing, adapting to the barriers, going down, not opposing anything, water is the perfect analogy of humility, adaptation and not conflict. The water wins aimlessly; following its nature, it surrounds any obstacle and teaches us how to overcome, but with wisdom, free from wear and tear, without losing sight of the goal. What is a rock on the road, a mountain‌? Even trapped in between cliffs and narrow passages, water filters, or evaporates if such a thing is not possible; nothing stops its destination. It's been the river of life that has left in my shores these texts, which today I share in book format. And I say "it left" because all authorship is at least confusing, since we are all debtors of those before us, those who inspired and keep inspiring us, of the floating clouds of the collective unconscious, and even, who knows!, of the spirits and the consciousness around us. I can't teach anything because I don't know anything, but for those who wish to hear my poems, here I leave my sincere and truly felt thoughts, every time more felt and less thought, because mind is a deceptive device that sees what it wants to see and I’ve learned to be suspicious about it.
In this DVD, G.M. Larry Tatum (10th Dan) develops techniques of the Kenpo program at the highest level. Particularly, some of his “favorites” like Flashing Mace, Parting Wings, Entwined Lance… Masterfully executed and based on the experience of the movement, G.M. Tatum incorporates his innovative teachings in these techniques that will help you add and complement your training in the Kenpo system. Besides, they provide the individual with the best choice for selfdefense, based on the logical and practical thinking, and place him in the path of understanding the art of Kenpo. These are the self-defense and fighting systems of the modern times we live in. They are designed so that the practitioner gets all the benefits that training these techniques can provide. This DVD has the support of Master Adolfo Luelmo (9th Dan), who goes on with a series of techniques performed in a smooth and strong way, for situations of extreme aggression, in which can be appreciated different states of the movement, in a logical and effective way. As a conclusion, Master Camacho Assisi (8th Dan), displays a technique that combines the strength of the arms and his expertise with legs.
