In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. An Art that seeks effectiveness to arrest a person, always looking to nullify from the start the opponent’s ability to attack, through a complete arsenal of techniques with empty hands and weapons, and a whole structure of arrests with ropes and sticks to facilitate the actions of the other companions. In this first DVD we will study the technique of empty hand vs. empty hand in different positions, against Katana, Wakizashi and Tanto, the use of weapons (Hishigi, Jutte, KusariFundó) or any type of stick, displacements, blows, and Hojo-Jutsu and Shibaru techniques

here are situations in life that cannot be avoided and it's before them that we unfailingly have to be up to the occasion. To tell the truth, it's something that we also do with the small, with the everyday, because it's in the small details where the devil entangles, but these little things will give us only the symptoms and will mark the trends of what will actually acquire body of reality, in the face of what are, in fact, the real challenges of life. Of Promethean nature, it's not easy, of course, to hear me stating this sort of questions. I’ve always been more the type of “Where there’s a will there’s a way”, or the old “Don’t complain before you do everything in your power first”. Arrogance, presumption, pride, vanity? Perhaps all these defects are only hiding the personal way one tends to confront difficulties. Each one of us, according to our nature, brings out what we all carry inside in the face of adversity, but unfailingly before the great enemies, we all succumb. At least I haven't met anyone, no matter how great he or she may have been, who could defeat two of man’s greatest enemies: old age and death. These battles are only won, paradoxically, by losing. Understanding, embracing, integrating experiences, growing spiritually, is possibly the ideal response to the irremediable. But the truth is that things come to our life when they come and not when we raise our hand and say: “Hey! Send it to me now that I'm ready!”

Rebelliousness before major causes is of little value, on the contrary it usually worsens them. It's to be preferred a certain stoicism, a silent resilience of the spirit that allows the slow accommodation of our being before the always annoying destiny that we face and with which we can conform, while trying our best despite everything. A heroic act every day, that will not be in the news by any media, nor by which you will be decorated in any instance. When the only alternative is death, keep on moving is a lot. Life doesn't come with the user's manual. We try to give our children and successors an education that will help them face their own path, but instead of the list of the Gothic kings, or so much differential calculus, perhaps we should talk to them about much closer matters. We could tell them, for example, that probably in their 40s, their eyesight will begin to fail and that there will be no arm long enough for them to read without glasses. We also could talk to them about the disappearance of that thing so rich and that one doesn't value during youth called ataraxia, that is, that you simply are, and nothing hurts. Or we could comment with them the indefectible phases of life and how fast they go by, much faster than we could never have imagined. In short, we should teach them that the only constant in life are changes and that many of them will be unpleasant and painful, especially because we live in an autistic society determined to live an eternal youth and look the other way in the face of the challenges of existence.

Traditional societies lived these natural processes with a very different spirit, because they lived more integrated in nature, and the proximity to the cycles of the evolution of their environment gave them the opportunity to integrate the transcendent events of existence in a less traumatic way. When the average urbanite becomes aware of the irremediable, he gets traumatized because he didn't expect it. Dying in a village was more than normal; people lived with life and death on a daily basis; they hunted or killed a hen to stay alive, or wore themselves out working in the fields in order to have something to fill their guts, which also builds character. Nowadays chickens are that indecipherable thing they call "fingers" and which, once fried, it could ∂be both chicken meat (if it contains any of that!) or a poultice of processed potatoes or flours. It is easy to afford to be sentimental, while others do the dirty work. We’ve disguised reality so much because we don’t dare to look at it face-to-face, but the price of living in the Matrix is you don’t know what’s going on, that is,

“you live without living in you”, as Saint Teresa of Jesus' poem has it, and suddenly you realize you're in bed dying. We have subsidized our deceptions and this has made us weaker, more idiotic and more arrogant, building a morality tailored to our mediocrity and our lies; now we want to impose it also on those who don't participate in it, solemnly proclaiming the universal rights of wild boars and seeking to ban hunting. True ecologists live in the countryside, the others are transvestites who, in these things of nature, only bullfight in the classroom... and they want to give us lessons! But the stupor and astonishment that personal death arouses in man, are a fact that each one of us will decipher in due time and in our own way. Our whole life is somehow the preparation for the next instant, and each moment will be part of the preparation for the final great leap. There's no need to make pupils go through rough patches to educate them, hard times will come on their own anyway, but don't either disguise their existence, rather, prepare your students for their arrival, because, inevitably, the bitter taste of defeat, old age, “what happens to you if you get live long enough” (*), and death will knock on the doors of all of us.

Karate History OKINAWA: JOURNEY TO THE CULTURAL ROOTS OF KARATE UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) is exploring the possibility of declaring Okinawa Karate as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. It's a good time, therefore, to reflect in Budo International on that special spirit that permeates the Karate of the ancient Ryukyu. And there's no one better at it than our collaborator Salvador Herrรกiz, who knows Okinawa like the back of his hand, including its history and its teachers, and who has been invited to learn about the Karate tourism project that Japan Travel Bureau Corporation (JTB Okinawa) prepares, the OCVB and the International University of Japan (and the Center for Global Communications-GLOCOM), the Japan Tourism Agency and the Global Enjoy My Japan Campaign. arate, as we understand it today, was born in Okinawa (despite having its ancestors in ancient China, with which the island has always maintained a close relationship). From there it expanded especially to Japan's main island of Honshu, then to the United States and later to other countries. Okinawa, formerly known as the Ryukyu archipelago, is formed by more than 160 islands dotted from northeast to southwest along 1000 kilometers, and there, in its main island, to which I have travelled several times, I took the opportunity to write a good number of articles related to the art of Karate and its masters, that later were published in Budo International. So, the history of Karate in itself has been already thoroughly explained, by me and by others, and therefore this time my approach to it is a bit... let's say, different.

To cut a long story short, I will only remember that Satsunuke Sakugawa is considered the first master of the art of Karate (although the art was still called in another way) in Okinawa. After him came the famous Sokon Matsumura, Anko Itosu and Kanryo Higaonna, who were the initiators of what it would later be the Shorin Ryu and the Shorei Ryu styles (as a continuation of the former Shuri Te and Naha Te, respectively), and behind them many others, today legends we've often dealt with in these pages. We are not sufficiently aware of the historical importance of Okinawa, and, more specifically, of its capital, Naha, a city that today barely exceeds 320,000 inhabitants and

whose art and soul has spread to 100 million practitioners in almost 200 countries. Not only out of respect and recognition, but also to know first-hand how Karate originated and how it was understood in the place where it was created, every karateka should perhaps visit Okinawa. The perception of Karate can change in the mind of whoever do it. More than 40 million people practice Karate in more than 120 countries and it all started with these characters ... and in these places. We all know that life can only be lived by looking forward, but it can only be understood by looking backward. What's more, Winston Churchill maintained that â&#x20AC;&#x153;The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you will see.â&#x20AC;? Okinawa is a very special place, and in a city like Naha (of a small size if compared to the bustle of Tokyo), its relaxed people and its incredible streets of postwar years and an almost vintage atmosphere, make it condense a special flavor Here, knowing the historical places of Karate and its relationship with the main characters, founders and pioneers, constitutes a tribute to all of them and helps to feel their history and philosophy. The spirit of Okinawa is based on loyalty and on the special master-pupil relationship (hence, practicing with other masters is not well regarded for it means disrespect to that loyalty, and it can distort the line of progression and understanding that the Sensei has planned for his pupil), and so, that respect and loyalty exists to even deceased teachers. Napoleon said ... "It is good to open the graves from time to time to talk with the dead." I have been a karateka for more than 46 years. Technically speaking, I am a practitioner of an eminently Japanese style, such is the Wado Ryu (although it partly comes from GichĂn Funakoshi Sensei, who was the master of the style founder, Hironori Ohtsuka, when the former was already established on Japan's main island). Therefore, little or no relationship can be said to have the Wado Ryu style with Okinawa (although it has some similarity in positions with the Shorin Ryu). However, the spirit with which I've always lived Karate, captivated me from the start and exerted a great influence on me, especially since I

Karate History first stepped on the Okinawan soil and knew its historical places, its roots, etc. This island of Karate continues to attract me for its people, its culture and its way of doing Karate, disciplined but perhaps not as rigid as the Japanese empty hand arts, and of course less obsessed with exterior aesthetics, although, as I say, my technical forms are different. Okinawa has places where that gratitude to the master can be expressed. Sokon Matsumura (1809-1899), forerunner of the Okinawa Te, was pupil of Sakugawa and master of Itosu, and also an expert swordsman of the Jigen Ryu Kenjitsu school. His grave and memorial, in Furujima, is a special place in itself, and where since 2000 you can read: “Matsumura Sokon was bor n in Yamakawa, Shuri. He was a great martial artist since childhood and as a result of joining the sword and the pen he became popular in his time as a Bujin, having great wisdom and courage. He served as the Royal Government guard for the 17th King Sho Ko, the 18th King Sho Iku and the 19th King Sho Tai.” Matsumura's technical line may be considered inherited by Master Hohan Soken, who learned from Nabe Matsumura, grandson of Sokon. Hohan Soken would later have Fusei Kise, 10th Dan of Okinawan Shorin Ryu Kenshin Kan Karate & Kobudo, as his main disciple, with whom I also had the opportunity to share some time ago, on another of my trips to the island of Karate. But one of Matsumura Sokon’s more popular students, if not the most, was no doubt Anko Itosu. Itosu also has a monument, even long before Matsumura. Indeed, Chibana Choshin and other disciples of Itosu such as Higa Yuchoku, Miyahira Katsuya, Nakazato Shuguro, etc., inaugurated the memorial to their master on August 30, 1964. Oshiro Iko (student of Higa Sensei), Shimabukuro Katsuyuki (of Chibana Sensei), and Miyagi Takeshi and Iha Seikichi (both of Miyahira Sensei), performed kata in his honor. his grave in Makabi, near Furujima. The inscription of the memorial says as follows: “Anko Itosu was born in the tiny town of Gibo, in Shuri, in 1831. He died in the town of Yamakawa in March 1915 at the age of 85. Having Having standardized his mastery in the principles of Karate Jutsu, Itosu Anko dedicated his entire life to the development of modern Karate Do. Itosu Anko is considered the person who did the most to show a Karate until then very closed and clandestine and introduce it into the Okinawan educational system, where he first worked as an assistant in the area of physical education. His immense contribution brought about the first bases on which modern Karate Do was established. The establishment of this monument commemorates the 50th anniversary of his death and the enormous achievements preserved and transmitted through his pupils. August 30, 1964. Established by the Kobayashi Karate Do Kyokai. President: Chibana Choshin. Calligrapher: Iraha Choko. Engraver: Ishimine Jitsuhiko.” Chomo Hanashiro (1869-1945), who was born in Yamakawa and a friend of Matsumura Sokon (as well as a neighbour), and then a veteran disciple (Sempai) of Itosu Anko, helped the latter in his mission. Like his partner Yabu Kentsu, he joined the Navy and served in the wars against China in 1895 and against Russia in 1905 and was promoted to First Lieutenant. That year, the word Karate with the meaning of “empty hand” appears in one of his writings.

Chomo would devote himself to politics becoming the Mayor of Mawashi town. His monument, erected in his grave on May 1, 2002, in the words of his grandson Choin Hanashiro, reads: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Born in 1869 and died on September 22, 1945. Mayor of Mawashi in September 1919. Here rest the remains of Hanashiro Chomo, the first mayor of Mawashi, creator of Hanashiro no Passai, and who first used the name of Karate in 1905 beginning the development of current Karate. He was called Holy Fist.â&#x20AC;? Hanashiro's family mausoleum dates from 1790, it was sponsored by the King of the Ryukyu and located elsewhere until recently, when an urban development project forced its transfer to the cemetery in Furujima. In 2006, we lovers of the history of Karate welcomed the appearance of a group photograph in which Master Anko Itosu could be identified. It certainly was a highly valued event. Apparently, it was a picture of August 1908 in which Itosu would appear alongside Shuhachi Okubo (the School Principal), the Judo master Ikeda

Takehiro, and some Judo and Kendo students. However, very recently, in mid-2019, it has been discovered that the aforementioned venerable master is not the one shown in the photo. At the time there were doubts on the part of some researchers, but it seems that the desire to having a photo of Itosu passed above major checks. Now Akiro Nakamura has discovered this error. It's not Itosu but a Kendo master from Miyazaki Prefecture, born in 1847, and named Miyake Sango. There are other photos that could be Itosu's or, once again, Miyake's, or even other peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soâ&#x20AC;Ś all things considered, better not venture out to give 100% reliability. It is not the first time that there are important errors in the interpretation of data and photos of the history of Karate. Continuing our tour of Okinawa and its most recent facts about the ancient history of our Martial Art, it must be said that in 2017 the Okinawa Karate Kaikan was created in Tomigusuku,

north of Naha. It's a complex that includes a modern and functional building, however it internally maintains the wood, both on floor and walls, giving a warm atmosphere to its large main room. Other smaller rooms, one of projections, a short shop and a small restaurant make up the building. It includes an interesting museum, with photographs, gadgets, calligraphy etc., of important masters of the island, highlighting for me in their showcases the writing of Matsumura Sokon about the virtues of Bu. A wonder that I had been wanting to enjoy firsthand for years. The same year of the opening of the Okinawa Karate Kaikan, Morio Higaonna summoned 50 important masters in order to see the possibilities of Okinawan Karate being recognized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational,

Scientific and Cultural Organization). Diplomat Matsuura Koichiro, former Secretary General of UNESCO and Director of Japan Karate Association, and Nakahara Nobuyuki, former director of the Japanese Banking Association and former JKA Chairman, also expressed their predisposition in this regard. Now, UNESCO is studying Okinawan Karate be declared “Intangible Cultural Heritage”. Since the organization doesn't contemplate the possibility of such recognition to Martial Arts or sports, Okinawan Karate would be recognized as such for its condition as “social and ritual custom, as well as spiritual festival”. This goal, which is currently being worked on, has as its motto “The spirit of peace; tying the ritual of Okinawan Karate to the UNESCO ring”. For this reason, in the 2019 summer a committee of masters was created,

under the leadership of the Governor of Okinawa and chaired by Higaonna, for whom “Okinawan Karate is a treasure left by our ancestors… and it's necessary that, not only us Karateka people, but also all the Okinawans united, we carry out such a goal.” The other members of the committee were the great masters Zenpo Shimabukuro, Minoru Higa, Tsutomu Nakahodo and Masakazu Kuramoto, and Dr. Masaki Sunagawa. In my opinion, practicing Karate in Japan no longer has, for traditionalists, that special incentive from before, since it has become too “westernly sporty” in many circles (others maintain the type). It’s in Okinawa, without a doubt, that the special flavor that accompanies the spirit of Karate is still maintained, with small and old dojos of old seeped out wood. Despite this, the danger that the small island be influenced by the movement of high competition does exist. In Okinawa, as in all places where Karate is practiced, of course, there has been competitions, but with a different spirit. Almost at the end of 2017, the WKF took one of its Premier League tournaments to Okinawa. I have the feeling that Karate on the island wasn't too happy with what it was seen (it's a personal appreciation derived from my talks with important Karate characters) and I hope that the special

Karate History spirit of Okinawa wasn't spoiled. It's but clear that they are two different ways of understanding Karate and although in theory they could move in parallel, the reality is that their forms and contents are very different and even counterproductive to each other. On 29 March 2018, Okinawa Karate hosted an exceptional visitor, Emperor Akihito himself, who visited the Karate Museum at the Kaikan in Tomigusuku, and witnessed an exhibition. "Thank you very much for demonstrating such a beautiful technique, and please ... be careful!", said the Emperor with Empress Michiko. Four Okinawa Intangible Treasures, all around the age of 80, teachers Masahiro Nakamoto (Kobudo), Takenobu Uehara (Uechi Ryu), Morinobu Maeshiro (Shorin Ryu) and Morio Higaonna (Goju Ryu) demonstrated before Him. The story was repeated almost 100 years later, after the historic demonstration of Gichin Funakoshi and other companions to the then Crown Prince Hirohito (later Emperor Showa, father of Emperor Akihito and grandfather of the current one, Naruhito) on the scale he made in 1921 at the cradle of Karate, on his way to Europe, and where he appreciated, he said, “that strange elegance of Karate.” Many are the monuments that dot Naha and other parts of Okinawa, in memory and tribute to their Karate masters. Very recently, on 29 August 2018, the monument to Master Choshin Chibana (to whom is attributed the name of Shorin Ryu, given in 1933 to the important form of Karate derived from what was once the Shuri Te) was erected. It was raised a small park in the place where the master taught Karate after the war. Chibana Choshin (1885-1969) was born in the village of Torihori, in Shuri. He was the second son of Chohaku and Nabi, and descendant of King Sho Shitsu (1652-1701). He was one of the most important students of Itosu, and as a curiosity there is the belief that he had specially trained the big toe of his right foot, which had become a devastating weapon. It seems to be true. In 1920 Chibana would create the so-called Kobayashi Shorin Ryu (Shorin Ryu refers to the Chinese temple of Shaolin, and in Okinawan language it means “small forest”). Chibana opened his dojo in Gibo (Shuri) in 1929, specifically in the Nakijin Goten of Teishi Yoshitsuga (Nakijin Gima), in what it was the garden of Baron Nakijin. A lifetime dedicated to the development of Karate led to the granting of the 4th Class Order of the Emperor. The main students of Chibana were Chozo Nakama (Shubokan), Yuchoku Higa (Kyudokan), Katsuya Miyahira (creator of Shidokan and student also of Anbun Tokuda and Choki Motobu), Shoshin Nagamine (founder of Matsubayashi and also disciple of Choki Motobu, Ankichi Arakaki and Chotoku Kyan), Shuguro Nakazato (Shorinkan) and Joki Uema, from the Shubukan dojo. Joki Uema, 10th Dan of the Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karatedo Association, who was born on June 3, 1920 in Shuri. He learned Karate from masters like his father Kama Uema (1855-1926), Chotoku Kyan (1870-1945), Choshin Chibana (1885-1969), Shinpan Gusumuka (1890-1954), Taro Shimabukuro (1906-1980) and the Chinese master Won Fuen (18641954). With the exception of the latter, the rest were important students of Anko Itosu (1831-1915) and this, of course, of Sokon Matsumura (1809-1899). This technical line of Karate, then still called To De (or even Okinawa Te), was complemented by the teachings of Kobudo that Joki Uema received from masters such as Choen Oshiro (1888-1939), Chuei Uezato (1899-1945) who taught him the handling of bo, and his own father Kama Uema, all of them also disciples of Itosu in this art and that through Sokon Matsumura, it came to him, in this case, from the first Okinawan master of history, Kanga Sakugawa (1762-1843). Another disciple of the famous Choshin Chibana was Yoshihide Shinzato, born in 1927, who would begin the practice of Karate with Ambum Tokuda, also a student of Itosu, before putting himself under the orders of Chibana. Shinzato, who also practiced Kobudo with masters like Katsuyoshi Kanei or Masahiro Nakamoto, marched to Brazil in 1954, where he made his life around his Shinshukan, and died in 2008. Another important Karate line in Okinawa is undoubtedly the Uechi Ryu, whose Hombu Dojo has always been in the nearby town of Futenma. Stemming from the former Pan Gai Nun, the Uechi Ryu style was created by Uechi Kanbun (1877-1948), a student of Shu Shi Wa. Kanbun's son, Uechi Kanei (1911-1991) developed the style and nowadays, already divided, is held by his children and masters who were disciples of Kanei. In addition to the Uechi family, surely the most influential clan in this style has been the family of Seiryo Shinjo, a great master whose witness was received and continued by his son Seiyu Shinjo and then by his grandson Kiyohide, son of Seiyu and born in 1951 (without belittling his brother Narihiro, younger than Kiyohide but also a great karateka). In addition to his children, one of Seiyu Shinjo's most important students was Takemi Takayasu, born in 1950, and settled in France from where he directs the Uechi Ryu in Europe. In Okinawa, the Uechi Ryu style is extremely important, and in April 2018, a great monument with a tremendous sculpture on its top was erected dedicated to its founder. Master Hokama took care of the explanatory plaque at its base. In 2019, to commemorate Karate Day (October 25), Uechi Ichiro, 6th Dan Shorin Ryu, priest of the Okinogu Shinto sanctuary, attached to the monument to Gichin Funakoshi (in Onoyama Park, in Okinawa, below Mount Tentōzan), conducted a new Festival, with demonstrations, speeches and music, after which a golden statue of Busaganashi, god of Karate, was located in the annexed sanctuary Kangondó. On October 31, 2019, Shuri Castle, an emblem without a doubt of Okinawa Karate, burned on all four sides, which meant a devastating blow to those of us who consider the place the cradle of Karate. It seems that a spark from restoration works, together with the fact that the whole building was made of

wood, varnished, painted or lacquered in addition (that is, very flammable, whichever way you look at it), made that, despite the efforts of the Okinawa firefighters, the emblematic place was reduced to a large pile of ashes. Only the adjoining buildings managed to barely keep standing some of their structure. Of the castle itself, of its main building ... there was absolutely nothing left. Actually, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the original building, because during World War II it had also been heavily damaged, but since its reconstruction it had earned the prestige and affection of all of Okinawa ... and of the whole world since it was declared a World Heritage Site of UNESCO in 2000, next to other places on the island (Zakimi Castle, Tamaudun, etc.). In the history of Karate, Shuri Castle has always been mentioned as an important enclave in the development of this Martial art. But its importance is far greater than it might seem a priori. Indeed, it was not only the workplace of important masters of the ancient Okinawa Te, such as Itosu, Kyan, Oyodomari, Azato and, especially, Sokon Matsumura, but there is much more. The influence that the Castle itself and the life in it has exerted on the current Karate and its technique is enormous, curious and interesting although, in order not to repeat myself, I will recommend readers to review articles in the Budo International magazine, and even books! in which everything is conscientiously explained. Now, the Japan Travel Bureau Corporation (JTB Okinawa), the OCVB and the International University of Japan (and the Center for Global Communications-GLOCOM), the Japan Tourism Agency and the Enjoy My Japan Global Campaign are organizing a tourism project on this Japanese island around native Karate. Before its materialization they wanted to know the opinion about a small group of Karate masters, authors and specialized writers from different parts of the world. Therefore, as a veteran karateka and instructor, and collaborator of Budo International, I was invited to spend a few days in Okinawa to show me their project of intentions, visiting historical places of Karate on the island, as well as Legendary masters, museums and even a resort specialized in Zen practices, as well as participating in Karate classes. Along with a dozen selected people from just 6 countries, among which were the French Julien Brondani and Stephane Fauchard, the American Marilyn Fierro (the only woman), the German Jamal Maesara and the Australian Damien MartĂn, etc ... we were divided into three work groups. Ours, together with Julien Brondani and the Japanese resident in Germany Ryohei Kobayashi, was perfectly attended and directed by Nobuo Ikawa, with the unconditional support of Koji Tokita, responsible for JTB (Japan Travel Bureau). Miguel da Luz and especially Alfredo Tucci, for counting on me for it. It's a trait of the high-born to be grateful. Those days spent together, and others in which I stayed on the island on my own, in addition to my research collected on previous trips, made this article possible. Karate should be understood, as well as a combat technique, also as a moving meditation. Likewise, Budo in general. It's not exclusively fighting. In Kyudo, for example, great masters have always maintained that the least important thing was to hit or not the target, since it was not about that, but about the process, the gesture, the breath, the concentration, and the effects that all these things produce it in the one who throws the arrow, without worrying about where it goes or who receives it. We've all heard, on the

other hand, Kenwa Mabuni's famous phrase, “Karatedo is Zen in motion”, although, perhaps for most people it's no more than a phrase, far from a real intention to take the Karate practice as such. That is why I was pleased to practice meditation in Okinawa, in a very specialized place. Indeed, the Wayn Zen of Onna is a meditation center opened in December 2016 at the place where it's said to be the center of the Mu continent, the primary energy point in the dojo of the East China Sea. In that place, at 7.30 in the morning, I walk the innumerable stairs that, together with Shelly Shi Sensei and my two practice partners, Julien Brondani and Riohei Kobayashi, take us to a stand high above the treetops that gives us a spectacular view of the ocean. There, with the teachings of Sensei, we enter the world of meditation and breathing. The few moments that before or after the practice of Karate takes place in what we know as Mokuso, sitting in the Seiza position, multiply here today until reaching 45 minutes of practice. The longest mokusō of my life!

Karate History My seminars on the island, this time (in addition to Karate practices with Takeshi Uema in the Kaikan of Tomigusuku, and again with Hokama Tetsuhiro in his dojo, in Nishihara), included Shodo or Japanese calligraphy (around its three forms of characters, kanji, hiragana and katakana). In Japan, Kanji originating in China during the Yayoi Period (year 300 BC to 300 AD) were taken as their own. Shodo calligraphy includes in its kanji the styles Kaisho, Gyosho and Sosho. I also devoted my time on the island to learn thoroughly the Tea ceremony, a sublime demonstration of hospitality in which the numerous protocol small details take on a special role. If

Karate is not really a practice against another person, but against oneself, the tea ceremony not only affects yourself but also affects others for whom you act as host. Hence the responsibility of the process and protocol. The tea ceremony, known as Sado, is carried out from the Sengoku and AzuchiMomoyama periods, that is, fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Harmony, respect, purity, tranquility, ... are the basis of a process in which the mind enjoys from the sound of boiling water to that of the tea powder torn by the narrow teaspoon, in this case masterfully directed by Sen no Rikyu.

The Sado ceremony took place in the Sasagirian center, in the Kibogaoka mountains, in Nakama Onna, an ideal place to learn and enjoy these traditions that, together with the floral arrangement, are part of the intimate aspects of Japanese culture, and in this case, with its own Okinawan characteristics. Contained in what is known as Sando, they are the ultimate expression of the culture of hospitality, and make live â&#x20AC;&#x153;wabi sabiâ&#x20AC;? moments, the special Japanese sense of beauty. Another tradition of which I participated in that occasion was the dyeing of indigo fabrics, decorating with Karate motifs white cloths and converting them to the typical blue

color, extracted, as in the past, from specific plants of the area. At the orders of Chihiro Sensei, in Izumi Motobu, in a place lost in the mountains, a true paradise of peace and tranquility, we spent the whole morning doing such a peculiar activity. I love the way the culture and customs of the island have directly influenced Karate and Kobudo. It is known, in this respect, that, for example, the Tonfa, before becoming an Okinawan defense weapon, was used as a handle of the mills that squeezed the milk of soybeans to later solidify it and turn it into tofu, in a process similar to that of making cheese with milk. Therefore, after a workshop on the origin of this popular weapon, and even participate in the preparation of a tofu soup (which we would later drink), Master Kenichi Yamashiro, from Komesu (Itoman), took us into the handling not only of his tonfa, but of the peculiar kata forms of suruchin (long string with weights at its ends that was used to scare off the beasts with the high-frequency

Karate History sound that its fast and large turns produces). The tonfa could have several lengths depending on the size of the mill to be moved, and was also modified when used as a weapon. Yamashiro Sensei comes from Master Matayoshi's school, and also told us about bo and eku, the oar used in fishing boats. That allowed us to participate even in a small rowing trip in the sea, aboard one of the small boats “sabani” with which they participate in the annual festivals that traditionally are dedicated to prayer for safety and good fishing. Itoman, south of the island of Okinawa, is a characteristic place for this type of activity. The God of the Sea Festival of Okinawa is originally from China and adapted in Okinawa in the 15th century, and is carried out in large boats, “haari”, that give name to the race (the aforementioned “sabani” are the smallest ones). Another noteworthy pupil of Shimpo Matayoshi, one of the parents of the Okinawan Kobudo, was undoubtedly Seikichi Odo (1926-2002), who was 10th Dan of Kenpo Okinawan Kobudo. Odo sensei had lear ned, in addition to Matayoshi, from teachers such as Koho Kuba, Mitsuo Kakazu, Seiki Toma, Shigeru Nakamura and Kenko Nakaima. The latter, grandson of the Ryue Ryu founder, Norisato Nakaima, would later become the master of well-known karatekas such as Teruo Hayashi and Tsuguo Sakumoto. After my days traveling through the Okinawan culture, I dedicated others to visiting my dear friends of Karate, masters of whom I always learn in their attitude and behavior and who make courtesy towards me something unforgettable. Although I visited masters with whom I have had a special relationship, like the Nakamoto house, in Shuri, the nearby one of the aforementioned Uema in the Shubukan (I was with the patriarch Joki, in 2010; with his son Yasuhiro in 2012, and again now with him and with his son Takeshi, with whom I practiced Karate in Tomigusuku), is with Minoru Higa with whom I've always felt at home. He’s always been great to me, taking his courtesy and hospitality to the extreme. Thanks Sensei! Minoru has been the great continuator of the work of his uncle Yuchoku Higa, one of the great ones, since his death in 1994. Itosu). Six years later Shiroma died and Yuchoku's father, a well-known Okinawa builder, took his son with Jinan Shinzato, a family friend, so that he could continue his Karate training. Simultaneously Yuchoku practiced with Seiei Miyahira, a calligrapher and musician who had learned To De with Pechin Kiyuna (disciple of Sokon Matsumura). At the age of 29, Yuchoku Higa worked in the Water Department of Naha City Hall and the mayor asked him to organize the baseball, Karate and Judo clubs. Higa decided that Jinan Shinzato was the Chief Instructor, and he would serve as his assistant. Yuchoku always thought that "the instructor was more important than the style", and began to practice under the guide of Choshin Chibana. He lived and taught Karate Shorin Ryu in his Dojo, the Kyudokan. His brother Jintatsu has developed Kyudokan Karate in Argentina for years, helped by his son, Oscar Higa. The Kyudokan, in the Tsuboya district, is a special place for me where I have lived great moments. On the upper floor is the dwelling where Yuchoku's elderly wife, Sachiko, lived until not long ago, and where I remember years ago having participated in a small ritual in memory of her husband. Today, Sachiko San, now a very old woman, is in hospital. Upon taking over Tsuboya's dojo after the aforementioned death of his uncle Yuchoku, master Higa Minoru left his other dojo in the hands of his wife Noriko, in Izumizaki. Noriko, 5th Dan of Karate, is also a wellknown Okinawan dance expert.

Minoru Higa is strong, very strong I'd say, he moves without haste, with the rhythm and aesthetics of the Okinawan Karate, a way of doing it for oneself and without being imprisoned by aesthetic demands, often with no technical reason. Karate should be like that and, on the island, it still is; a Karate with a special flavor in which, as Master Minoru Higa says, “It’s not the person in front of you that you have to deal with, but the person within yourself. You have to look in the mirror, because what you see is really your only competition.” Okinawa is the soul of Karate, a Karate that is not contemplated to win ... but not to lose. Nearby is Morio Higaonna's dojo, also a key place in the island's Karate. But Morio, who has recently suffered a health setback, although he seems recovered, doesn't go attend the dojo as much as he used to (many times we have met there), so this time I shared a good time with his disciple Uehara Yanekazu. Also very close is the Jundokan of Eiichi Miyazato, who died many years ago, and where in fact Morio sensei was formed, although later life took him away from him. The technical heirs of Miyazato are now under the command of Tsuneo Kinjo. Everything is changing. The Goju Ryu of Okinawa Island stems from master Chojun Miyagi, and in addition to Naha, it was developed throughout the island. His main pupil,

this time in the old Goya (now Okinawa city) was perhaps Seikichi Toguchi. A student of Toguchi since 1956, and until Toguchi's departure to Tokyo in 1975, was Master Kinei Nakasone, whom we can see in the beautiful photographs in which he posed for Black Belt. Nakasone, sadly deceased in 2002, had been Masanobu Shinjo's successor at the head of the Shobukan, three years after the latter's death, in 1993. Three years later, Nakasone

created the Okinawan Goju Ryu Seibukai, the "Pure Art", as he liked to call it. The entire Goju Ryu of Okinawa pays permanent tribute to its leader Chojun Miyagi, therefore his tomb is another must-seeing place, offering revealing views of Ginowan from the Kakazu Hills. I would add many graves to the already mentioned of Miyagi, Itosu, Matsumura or Hanashiro (the last three also in the same Shuri cemetery).

Karate History I would also add Chotoku Kyan's peculiar grave, discreet and humble, even invisible if you don't know where the exact place is among bushes and plants. Others like Sakugawa, Chibana, Motobu, Shiroma, etc., are also places of worship. Typical Okinawan tombs that look like fully fledged mini houses, quite different of the traditional tomb style in Japan's main island. In these places, if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re predisposed, you can feel being together with the founders. Also curious are some secret - or at least discreet training places, where ancient masters practiced. Such is

the case of the old caves of Furuherin, in Tomari, and the meadow near Matsumura's house where he practiced with Yabu or Hanashiro, a street neighbor. Shikina Enn, another residence of the ancient kings of Okinawa is also a special place regarding Sokon Matsumura. There he used to practice, teach ... and write his famous reflections. Okinawa is also losing its great masters, and those who become its representatives are logically leaving, influenced by the new times, so pleaseâ&#x20AC;Ś visit and enjoy Okinawa before it is too late.

Krav Maga

Krav Maga ... survival system! Like it or not, Krav Maga is a formidable defense system with tremendous efficiency, as long as its principles are understood and correctly used. This system is based on one single objective: to survive. It's easy to understand that when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been attacked for decades, you test without any prejudice and without making a fuss out of it, everything that exists in self-defense and defense of others, no matter where it comes from. Facts in time donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lie. When you've tried everything to no avail, you dive into a race against time to create what will allow you to survive!

Krav Maga hen time is running out ... you have to go to the essentials! Simplicity of implementation,

action, understanding. This system decided to use the natural reflexes of the human body ... Each individual has natural reflexes that are triggered when the body feels it has to react to an unforeseen situation. This means that each person already has a potential defense ... In order to make these reflexes even more effective, we must first know what we are facing as types of attacks. The more quickly the student becomes aware of the different attack groups, the faster he will be able to use the defense principles specific to these different attacks. Attacks with weapons or without weapons. The group of attacks with weapons is divided into subgroups: with knives or sharp weapons, with guns (firearms), with various blunt objects and others such as baseball bats, stones, cups, etc. Unarmed attacks include punches, several grips, keys, chokes ... For each attack group there are specific principles depending on the danger level of the group. The selected defense techniques (few) must be effective against a large number of attacks or threats. In other words, with a chosen defense technique, several attacks or threats can be treated.

Principles for dealing with firearm attacks or threats The technical defense movement must meet specifications allowing: • Getting out of the firing line (dodging, deflecting…) • Breaking the distance (by suitable displacements…) • Controlling the weapon or the armed arm (by seizing the weapon or the armed member ...) • Aggressive counterattack (with appropriate blows…) • Disarming (normally not necessary when the aggressive counterattack has paid off!). Note: During the aggressive counterattack, the weapon may fall to the ground. It is imperative to scan your environment at all times to identify any person close enough who can grab the fallen weapon. The Krav Maga system considers in its way of acting that the aggressor is never alone. Let's continue with the description of the body of this intelligent and formidable system!

Krav Maga In addition to having determined the different attack groups as well as the basic principles of defense, the system includes training under stress, in advanced fatigue condition, against several opponents, which adds to the credibility of Krav Maga.

A few words about working against several attackers In our previous articles we have already alluded to specific training against several attackers. We must keep in mind that confronting an aggressive person is not an easy task in itself, but what if, in addition, the guy is accompanied by other people in the same mental condition??? Krav Maga does not intend to solve everything, but it aspires to tackle the most difficult tasks with more or less success. Training a good number of drills in which participate several aggressors will develop several aspects in the Krav Maga student. He will sharpen his senses and forge a mental state to any test! Previously we detailed the principles to use against attacks and threats with weapons. These are the general principles regarding the aggressions committed by multiple aggressors at the same time: • Move as quickly as possible to face a single attacker if total escape is not possible. • Don't let the aggressors develop their attacks. • Counterattack at sensitive points. • Avoid all grips. • Take possession of an object that could give an advantage. • Take advantage of the slightest "possibility" of disarming one of the armed assailants and using the weapon against the other attackers. Rem: When you face several attackers, everything speeds up! This means that combinations that normally work in the "One to One" will not necessarily be effective. Despite respecting the defended "One

Krav Maga against one" principle, the combinations will be affected by the rapid change in situations generated by the aggressors. This type of training will push us, setting a precedent, to simplify our defense work! The phrase used on a large scale in the world of Krav Maga “The only rule in Krav Maga is that there is none!”. The attacks of several aggressors ... it's a matter of survival!

Jukoshin Ryu. An effective self-defense system. The Jukoshin Ryu style of Jiu Jitsu was designed to be a powerful and definitive tool in hand-to-hand combat. Free movement Each Form in Wing Chun Kung Fu has a series of techniques and strategies of their own, and above all, some forms differ from others by vibration. Yes, vibration! For many, this concept is completely new ... because they do not distinguish between one form and another. But for a Chinese Martial Arts practitioner this aspect is really interesting. Siu Nin Tao is STABILITY and constant pressure Chum Kiu Tao is RECOVERY of balance and pressure. Due to loss of position or wrong decisions Biu Tze Tao is EMERGENCY ... Elastic movements, with a broken structure, and where proceeding quickly and surprisingly is extremely important. The goal ... returning to Siu Nin Tao as soon as possible!

I'm not talking about WingTsun practitioners having to come to my school or practice with me ... Believe me, it would be unbearable if we all did the same thing in the same way. I’m talking about doing a serious job of practicing Wing Tsun Kung Fu.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an obligation for those of us who have received the lineage burden, and feel the obligation to try to improve what we do for the next generation... At least to try it out! I sincerely believe that many take lightly the history of a fighting style almost 500 years old, and don't realize what the weight of LINEAGE represents for the Chinese people. Nor are they aware of the RESPONSIBILITY it entails, and that it's not limited to simply calling yourself â&#x2C6;&#x201A;SHIFU / SIFU.

Today I had the immense fortune to meet a practitioner of a traditional lineage who is supported by 40 years of practice (it's easily said!). After a good talk he opened my eyes in an aspect in which I was in a completely opposite position to his. Everyone who knows me knows that, for me, TEACHING everyone and without limits is essential. But I recognize that he knew how to defend his view of view excellently and I believe that my standpoint on the subject has changed. Here I leave his reasoning:

Otherwise, it would be like giving fresh water to those who are not thirsty...” There you go!!! And that's what I'll do from now on. So, to all those who spend their lives criticizing everything I do, and then copying me, my dear reviewers, from now on... You’ll have to work at it a little harder!

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attackerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

In this new work, Olivier Pierfederici shows the difference between real Close-Combat and Self-Defense, something that is not always too clear. True real Close-Combat is a mainly offensive and non-defensive technique whose sole purpose is the final neutralization of the aggressor, always keeping in mind that he is never alone. Jeet Kune Do Accepting what is deserved One of the most difficult things is not accepting what we don't deserve. When raising a child, the role of all parents is to teach the minor to be straightforward and honest. This, of course, implies learning respect and honesty. These two concepts are also highly important in Martial Arts and combat sports. Therefore, the child must learn to live in society and to be aware of what he deserves or does not deserve. Among other things, the child is taught not to cheat at school and to accept the grades he gets.

Jeet Kune Do hese notes will reflect the work heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done and if he didn't work hard enough, he will get a score according to the efforts he made to review and prepare his written or oral tests. When you get something you deserve, the satisfaction is immense; on the other hand, everything that is obtained by convenience, luck or through cheating or deception, has no merit or flavor. It's therefore the duty of parents to teach the children the value of merit, with the support of their teachers. In Martial Arts, these notions are essential and inseparable from the martial path of any honest practitioner. If the terms Sifu, Simo, Sigung, make reference to family links, then it

assumes its full value. In fact, a Martial Arts master must teach his students in the same way parents do, that is, through personal merit. Let's not forget that the word Sifu mainly means first and foremost "father", â&#x20AC;&#x153;your fatherâ&#x20AC;?, in your style. This shows the main role that the Sifu will play in teaching of each of his students who, for him, must be like his own children. Our children sometimes resist these notions of merit, respect, and honesty.

Jeet Kune Do That's why parents should do their utmost to get them back to normal and show them that, without merit, nothing they get will have any real value. And this even though it is an illusion to the people around them. So, how is it possible that in our martial disciplines, so many diplomas and awards are distributed without being deserved? We can see how the number of diplomas of "convenience" or purchased tittles is increasing day by day. The organizers don't carry out any verification. The craziest thing is that the bigger the titles or ratings, the more accommodating the jury will be. I got acquainted with a "grandmaster" who had over the 24th Dan in his black belt. It may sound very laughable and grotesque, but it was so huge that everyone was affectionate and complacent with him! Isn't it proven that there only exist ten Dan levels? To counter this, many create their own style or system awarding themselves the honorary title of the 10th Dan Black Belt or more, as 24 Dan... Where is the notion of merit and respect to those who have really worked to obtain these titles? Those practitioners have made great sacrifices without expecting anything in return. They've spent their lives practicing with absolute dedication. When they receive an award, they think they do

not deserve it and show their deep gratitude to their teachers, who enabled them to reach that level. Those who usurp titles or get undeserved titles, know deep down their true level and what they are really worth. However, for commercial and media purposes, this will never prevent them from taking everything they don't deserve in order to gain notoriety and make big bucks. As a teacher, it's necessary to discourage honest students who ask questions like "why should I be honest when honesty doesn't pay?" or "Why should I receive what I deserve when so many practitioners and teachers get what they don't deserve?" We must then reason as parents and just answer that what is badly acquired never brings benefits. If you get something you don't deserve, it won't be useful for too long. For example, a child who cheats to obtain a good mark, will never have acquired the concepts taught and one day or the other during his schooling, these concepts will have to be used again and he will be unable to do so. In addition, you spend a lot more energy cheating than learning seriously. In fact, preparing your cheat sheets takes much longer than learning honestly.

It's the same in Martial Arts, the more we learn, the more we realize the immensity of the knowledge to acquire and our ignorance. Of course, we must also learn to purify what is not useful to us, but discovering new things is as wonderful as questioning ourselves. To conclude, I think that we should only accept what we deserve and stop chasing

Let's forget the star system and intensive media coverage applying its commercial methods. Let's not accept diplomas offered after 6 months of practice, which in no way reflect a real level. Let's stop getting tittles by means of our wallet instead our sweat. Let's stop pretending that we can represent a system when we know absolutely nothing about it. Practicing different fighting systems in no way means being a master and teach all of them. We can very well practice and make our students aware of different systems, without claiming to know everything about them, so our students, whenever they like a particular system that has caught their attention, can delve into it by going to a qualified teacher. That corresponds to college level, each child will specialize in the disciplines he likes but this will be possible thanks to the teachers who have strived to give him a general knowledge and allow him to discover where he wanted to go. Martial Arts are an honest and healthy way of living to get to know and discover yourself. We only take what we really deserve, acquired over the years through our training and our sweat. What is not deserved we deny it, perhaps one day we will be ready to accept it, but that day it will be deserved. Merit is a fundamental concept, although currently is only a broad concept for many. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wonderful to get something you really deserve through hard work.

Torite Ju Jutsu (Part 3) Continuation Joint structure of the lumbar spine Intervertebral discs: The articular surfaces are formed by the upper and lower faces of the bodies of the vertebrae. In the end plates it can be observed a depression that is attenuated by a cartilaginous lamina, originating the intervertebral discs that unite them, and which are reinforced by the anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments. The anterior longitudinal ligament has a weak connection with the disc, while the posterior longitudinal ligament is attached to the surface of the disc, being thinner in the lumbar region than elsewhere. Intervertebral discs are thicker in the anterior part of the cervical and lumbar portions, where the backbone describes an anterior convexity curve. They assume an important function for the spine: that of transmitting the load from one vertebral body to another. Paradoxically, they transmit and restrict the movement of the intersomatic joints. They also function as shock absorbers. This phenomenon takes place from the second cervical vertebra to the sacrum. Intervertebral discs are formed by two parts: one peripheral, fibrous ring (annulus fibrosus) and another central, soft and gelatinous (nucleus pulposus). The fibrous ring consists of several concentric layers or sheets (laminae) of collagen fibers and fibrous cartilage. The nucleus pulposus is a gelatinous substance, affecting from forty to sixty percent of the discs, containing 88 percent of water and formed by a fundamental substance, mucopolysaccharides.

Lumbar Joint The small structures that make up a lumbar joint between articular processes, have joint capsules, intraarticular structures, lumbosacral facet joints. Articular capsules are presented at the dorsal, superior and inferior margin of each apophyseal joint. Collagen fibers follow in the transverse direction from one joint process to another. The fibrous capsule in its previous level, is replaced by the yellow ligament; later it's reinforced by the deep fibers of the multifidus muscle. In the upper and lower portion, the capsule is loose and forms subscapular bags containing fat.

Joint structures The intra-articular meniscus structures are of three types: Fibro-adipose meniscoids: a failure in this structure can be considered as the cause of an acute blockage of the spine. A posture adopted from the false position is observed in a patient, since this reduces the tension on the joint. Adipose coccyx: found in the upper and lower extremities of the joint, both the fibro-adipose meniscoid and the adipose coccyx. The Rim of the Connective Tissue: which is a cuneiform thickening of the internal surface of the capsule, fills the spaces left by the folded margins of the articular cartilage, favoring the increase of the contact area of the articular facets. Articular facets: The lumbar apophyseal joint is formed by the link of the lower facets of a lumbar vertebra, with the superior facets of the underlying vertebra.

The position of the facets in the lumbar region, differ from the shape to the direction and range of movement, in a mobile segment. The location of these joints interferes with the prevention of anterior dislocation and rotational dislocation to the intervertebral joint. In the frontal plane, joint flat articular facets are less suitable for axial rotation. In the sagittal plane, the joint can oppose rotation, however, the anterior dislocation of these joints is less apt for rotation. In joints with curved articular facets, the anteromedial extremity of the upper facet is turned back and it opposes when moving forward.

Bugei "C" shaped joints present a greater surface area and have a greater resistance to dislocation forward than "J" shaped joints. Both joints ("C" and "J") effectively oppose rotation. Joint capsule: joint capsules are linked to the margins of the articular facets; they are thin and loosen, allowing movement in the sagittal plane. In general, these symptoms are more pronounced when the individual wears certain types of shoes. Bugei In most of its presented forms, Ashi Kudaki, as they are mentioned in certain kata, correspond to movements of ankle sprains. The ankle sprain is an injury to the ankle ligaments (the elastic and tough tissue that connects the bones to each other). Any ligament of the ankle can be affected. Generally, sprains occur when the ankle rolls out, causing the sole of the foot to turn toward the other foot (inversion). Sometimes, a moderate or severe twist can bring about problems that last even after the ligament healing. The formation of a small nodule in one of the ankle ligaments can occur, causing a constant problem in the joint and leading to chronic inflammation and finally, a permanent injury. Supposedly, in the past, the adversary who had fallen victim of a technique like this would rarely recover the original movement again. Nowadays, according to some medical students, surgery is rarely necessary. A nerve that runs over one of the ankle ligaments can also be injured in a twist. The injection of a local anesthetic can relieve pain and tingling (neuralgia), sometimes permanently. Individuals with a sprained ankle may walk in a way that overloads the tendons (strong and flexible tissue cords that bind a muscle to a bone, or a muscle to another muscle) on the outer side of the ankle, causing inflammation. That disturbance, known as fibular tenosynovitis, can cause chronic edema and pain on the external side. Treatment consists of using ankle supports, which limit the joint movements.

When Ashi Kudaki wasn't successful, the adversary suffered a nervous reverberation. This could in the future become a neuroma. The nerves that innervate the sole of the foot and fingers have been located between the bones of the fingers. The pain in the anterior part of the sole of the foot can be caused by non-cancerous tumors of nerve tissue (neuromas). In the first studies, the neuroma can cause only a discreet pain around the fourth toe, which is occasionally accompanied by a burning sensation, that of tingling. In general, these symptoms are more pronounced when the individual wears certain types of shoes. As the disturbance progresses, a constant burning sensation may radiate to the toe tips, regardless of the type of footwear used. The individual can also feel as if there was a pebble inside the anterior region of the foot plantar surface. As a consequence of this poorly performed technique, as far as foot pains are concerned, the pain surrounding the joints of the four minor toes of the foot, is very common, being generally caused by a bad alignment of the joints. This poor alignment may result from a very high or very low arch of the foot, causing the toes to remain flexed (hammer toes). The constant bumping against the flexed toes causes the skin lining the joint to become thick, resulting in the formation of a callus. The treatment seeks the relief of pressure caused by poor alignment. We can thus see the consequences that, in the distant past, could have sent a great warrior indefinitely to retirement You have to watch out with the practicing of this type of torsion. Famous for its efficiency, the Torite sought to use the knowledge of human body to develop its techniques and methods.

The founders of WTU Wing Tsun Universe, GM Sifu Alfred Neudorfer and Si-Mo Rosa Ferrante Bannera, present a new work, focused this time on Chum Kiu, the second of the "solo" movements or classic forms of Wing Tsun, from the WTU perspective. The WTU Chum Kiu, or "4 waves", is especially characterized by the use of the falling step, the 3 basic kicks (a Wing Tsun slogan for kicks says that "each step is a kick, and each kick is a step"), and the arm bridges, long and short bridges, which determine the way we come into contact with the attacker. The DVD includes the execution of the complete Chum Kiu movement, the 4 Chum Kiu sections with 3 applications for each one of them, with the use of the 3 basic kicks and the arm bridges. Finally, the video shows the sequences 2-7 of the Chum Kiu movements with a training partner or ChiSao. The origin of Muay Lert Rit Over the past 20 years, IMBA, the International Academy that I lead, has concentrated all its efforts on the re-organization and dissemination of Thailand’s forgotten unarmed combat techniques. The conventional name chosen to denote this ancient martial discipline was Muay Thai Boran; a set of forgotten techniques designed over the centuries by the Kingdom of Siam’s masters.

Muay Thai MBAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s members coming from 25 countries in 4 continents have made extensive studies and practiced with passion these ancient forms of Muay for years. Consequently, this level of commitment and involvement has helped to develop a rational and cohesive technical program; such a rigorous curriculum is currently in use at the different international branches of the Academy worldwide.

Traditional Muay has finally become a true world heritage, as advocated by the Thai masters of old time. Over the past 42 years, I have had the honor and privilege to study and cooperate with some of these Thai masters. Yet, beyond the well-known sport version of the discipline (Muay Thai) and its artistic and traditional form (Muay Boran), an even more elusive and fundamental aspect of the Siamese Art of fighting remained obscure: notwithstanding many rumors of admiration and respect, very few information related to the markedly military form of Muay had yet been passed on.

Arjan Marco De Cesaris People would talk about this Art but aside from some supposedly "secret techniques" inherited by a few teachers, who in turn had lear ned the basic notions from an old relative, it seemed that all traces of this practical fighting expertise was lost. Yet, these technical applications carried great importance for the practitioners in ancient times, before the influence and spread of firearms and their impact upon military education. Even the most educated Thai Martial Arts’ scholars have rarely focused their attention on a thorough analysis of the ancestral style of unarmed combat employed by the Siamese Nak Su (warriors). Instead, it is obvious that all warriors needed to be ready to attack and defend themselves once deprived of their weapons on the battlefield. As a matter of fact, the only weapons always available were their Natural Body Weapons, a fact well known by Siamese Army’s elite troops’ members. The question we asked ourselves is as follows: can we restructure a system of Muay as close as possible to the one in use before the advent of firearms? A straight to the point system, employed by those who actually applied such techniques on the battlefield or to defend the members of aristocracy, like the fearsome Krom Nak Muay? Can we still use these combat principles by modernizing them and by making them accessible to a hypothetical modern practitioner? The answer is represented by the IMBA Lert Rit Curriculum, the technical guide all members of the International Academy follow on a regular basis. This detailed program has been structured along the years: this is the result of a throughout analysis of ancient thai textbooks and the careful examination of a Siamese fighting manual, the oldest original document in existence that illustrates close range combat techniques with bare hands. The contents of this manual show a form of fighting that closely relates to a military approach to combat, very far from both the sport and artistic versions of Muay.

Arjan Marco De Cesaris The consequence of this research uncovers a missing link within the very structure of the highly attractive martial art called Muay: this specific element has been defined by some as the "military version of Muay Boran". However, the sophisticated combat Art presented herewith, represents a complete fighting system in its own right. This style, hyper realistic and very flexible in its essence, can bring the application of Muay techniques to a unique level of effectiveness and universality, perhaps never attained by the most modern and most acrobatic version of the Siamese Martial Arts. Both women and men clad in street clothes or comfortable martial arts uniforms, can all be trained in this form of aggressive self-defense, with great results in a relatively short time. The techniques surpass all boundaries, and can be applied by students of all genders, at every latitude and under any climatic conditions. Whoever chooses to study this martial discipline will find, within its theoretical foundation, a more profound insight into a deep cultural heritage. The ancient Kingdom of Siam was a fascinating place of ancestral martial traditions, whose mysteries reveal themselves to the inquisitive student.

Muay Lert Rit Techniques The Art of Supreme Power Fighting or Muay Lert Rit is considered by many experts as the top of Thai Martial Arts fighting techniques. Since many years the International Muay Boran Academy is working to gather under IMBA Muay Lert Rit banner the best traditional techniques and modern training tools that have been taught to Arjarn Marco De Cesaris by the various military experts with whom he has cooperated for the last 12 year. The result is a powerful mix of techniques and strategies that combine traditional and modern elements selected according to a rigorous scientific process. IMBA Lert Rit Curriculum is based upon four basic Fighting Strategies, seven Technical Pillars and, above all, eight Energy Principles. In order to fully understand the importance of the eight Energy Principles, one must go back to the origin of this Martial Art. In fact, before becoming a combat sport, Muay Thai was a valuable element in the technical background of

Siamese soldiers who used the unarmed techniques in combination with bladed weapons: swords, spears, axes or knives. Obviously, all out fighting on the battlefield was radically different from present day sport fighting: although hand and leg strikes as a mean to attack were frequently employed, they had to be executed mostly at a very close range and were combined with grabs, throws, locks and joint breaking maneuvers. Each attack was designed to injure or kill, by hitting vital points or causing the rupture of the cervical vertebrae. Being Lert Rit an updated, modern reinterpretation of the ancient battlefield Muay, its training system aims at developing the ability to fight at close range using hard blows to the body’s sensitive areas of the enemy, as a first line of offence. These strikes employ hard bony parts as "weapons”, such as: the hands (knuckles, heel and outer edge of the hand) and the arms (outer forearm bone), the legs (forefoot, heel, shin), the knees, the elbows, the head. Since striking from a close range is very different from hitting at medium or long range, one needs to develop a specific type of explosive power by applying the Eight Energy Principles of IMBA Muay Lert Rit: all parts of the body must come into play in full unison, perfectly coordinated in the execution of each attack and the entire body mass must be explosively projected onto the opponent, even if the combatants are separated by a very small space. The energy that is absorbed from the ground by the feet is transmitted to the hips and then it is addressed to the limbs (arms and legs) from where it is "shot" towards the enemy’s weak points. Such explosive energy must be entirely transferred to the opponent at the instant of contact between the natural weapon and the target. The application of this type of specialized destructive strikes usually results in a hard knockout or at least, a stunned opponent, ready for a finishing technique. The various advanced systems of application of the Energy Principles are represented by the 31 operational strategies called Look Mai Muay Lert. A sound knowledge of basic and advanced techniques of Muay Thai Boran (IMBA Lert Rit’s technical “mother Art”) is needed as a starting point upon which a real understanding of Lert Rit can be built . From a general point of view the basic curriculum is based upon the use of the following body weapons employed to unleash devastating close range strikes:

Muay Thai Low kicks: roundhouse or straight kicks always aimed below the belt line. Elbow blows: both slashing and piercing aiming at c r u s h i n g t h e b ones, breaking the joints, causing concussions or damaging the t-zone (face) of the opponent. Knee strikes: executed both with and without a grab. Head-butts : similarly executed both with and without a grab. Hand strikes: mostly open hand strikes, (heel of the hand, thumb or fingers, outside edge of the hand used as a knife or as a hammer) and a vast array of forearm strikes. Punches are encouraged only after the trainee has undergone an intensive Muay Sakon (Bare Knuckle Boxing) training. Extensive training in thai grappling is needed since the very beginning stage of training. Any IMBA Lert Rit trainee must be at ease at very close range and every technique must be applied in close combat.

Close range is where a Lert Rit expert is more at ease. Real fights usually happen at a very close range; therefore, most Lert Rit fighting strategies specialize in close combat situations. A Lert Rit practitioner must be able to strike with maximum power from a close distance using his elbows, knees, head, forearms and hands. He must be an expert at controlling his opponent with a vast array of specialized grappling holds. Moreover he must learn to apply, if the situation requires, a series of basic snappy arm or neck locks,. The basic Muay Thai Chap Ko (neck hold) is trained extensively to become second nature and if properly applied, it is enough to render the opponent unconscious by combining the strenght of the hold with a quick barrage of knee, head and elbow strikes. Moreover, a properly applied Chap Ko hold is the starting point to execute a series of unbalances and fast throws. Hard throwing techniques (Tum Tap) complete the technical mix, adding a

Muay Thai finishing touch to the tool box of any experienced Lert Rit fighter. All trainees are taught to face any serious confrontation aggressively, bringing the fight to the opponent by following three basic steps: 1. Engage (employ aggressive defence strategies based on pre-emptive striking) 2. Knock down (hit the opponentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vital spots and throw him down) 3. Finish the opponent on the ground (by kneeing, stomping, choking or joint breaking maneuvers). IMBA Lert Rit Look Mai are structured to put the trainee in conditions to properly apply the 3 basic steps of fighting. Learning how to get close to the opponent and how to manage to fight at very close range is of paramount importance, according to Lert Rit fighting strategy.

The learning system After years of experimentation, corrections and refinements, Muay Lert Rit, IMBA Muay Boran's "hard core" system has finally matured and is ready to be spread internationally. IMBA Lert Rit Curriculum is based upon seven Technical Pillars and eight Energy Principles or Mae Mai Muay Lert Rit and 31 advanced strategies or Look Mai Muay Lert Rit concerned with the actual use of the Artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basics. A deep knowledge of basic and advanced Muay Thai Boran techniques is needed as a starting point upon which a real understanding of Lert Rit can be built. The most recent development of IMBA Lert Rit has led, in parallel with the study of purely military tactics, to the development of a new approach: in fact, while maintaining the martial spirit of the origins, many of the strategies and techniques practiced nowadays have also been oriented towards civilian selfdefence. Training courses for IMBA Lert Rit teachers based on the official International Curriculum are already active in Europe, Latin America and Australia.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu The Gracie Connection 2.0 Almost exactly 25 years ago, in February 1995, one of my first articles in German language about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu appeared, which was published by the martial arts magazine KICK. When I think back today, a lot has changed, but the love and passion for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the same, even if I have a crisis now and then. In my opinion, Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as opposed to back then, has changed not only for the better! For me, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was and is not just self-defense, but like other martial arts I have learned in my life, it gives me strength, confidence, and peace. Thanks to the martial arts, I am very much in balance today. This morning I held the abovementioned KICK article entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Gracie Connection" in front of me and had just scanned it as I was about to post it to our Gracie Concepts Facebook page.

As I leave the article again, I asked myself: would I write it today the same way I wrote it over 25 years ago? At what points would the information I gave then be written differently? I love this game of "then and today", because after so many years each of us collects so many new things. So, what you have in your hands right now is exactly such a revision. Pure family style In 1914, Gastão Gracie became friends with Esai Maeda, the head of what was then the Japanese emigration colony. Maeda was a well-known Ju-Jutsu champion. During this friendship, Maeda decided to teach Ju-Jutsu to Gastão Gracie's son, Carlos Gracie. Maeda was very enthusiastic about Carlos' perseverance and enthusiasm. Maeda had to teach his student in hiding because the Gracies were not Japanese but emigrated from Scotland to Brazil in 1801. Carlos Gracie had to promise to pass on JuJutsu only to family members. When Maeda died, Carlos Gracie and his brothers opened the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Rio de Janeiro in 1925. Hélio Gracie, who was the weakest member of the family due to a childhood illness, developed new techniques with the idea of making them more efficient through less strength but more coordination and speed. In my upcoming new Gracie Jiu-Jitsu book, which will soon be published by this same publisher (Budo International) in the middle of this year, I describe in the chapter "Beyond Jiu-Jitsu: A Brief Japanese Jiu-Jitsu History" the history of JiuJitsu in Brazil through the various Japanese masters that I know of today. When I started Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Los Angeles in 1990-91, I was told several stories about the Gracie’s and their alleged master named Mitsuyo Maeda, who was

Gracie Jiu Jitsu also called "Conte Coma". The American martial arts magazines of that time, like Inside Karate, Black Belt etc., I'm talking about the time between 1988 and 1995, copied each other's Gracie stories, which had been told and commented on so often, and so there was hardly any new useful information. As important as it is to me to speak of "the Maedas" in the plural, I must of course also report on the one Mitsuyo Maeda - there is no doubt about his outstanding role in the introduction of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil. The almost 164 cm tall and 60 kg light Maeda was born on November 18, 1878 in the city of Hirosaki in the north of the main island. After Maeda had tried sumo wrestling for a short time, he switched to Jiu-Jitsu and sword fighting because of his small stature. By the way, we know today that he came from a samurai family and that his father also ran a fencing school in the village. At the age of seventeen he was sent to Tokyo to study at Waseda University, where he began training at the Kodokan Institute. In 1907 four masters at the Kodokan were awarded a 4th Dan. These were Shutaro Ono, Soshihiro Satake, Tokugoro Ito and Mitsuyo Maeda. This group travelled to the USA about one year later, led by Master Ito. Ito stayed mainly in the USA and later travelled only briefly to South America to visit his friends. The Masters Satake, Ono and Maeda, however, soon continued their journey, first to Europe and then to South America. The first document known to me today that proves Maeda's presence in Brazil is dated November 14, 1914 and is an announcement of a Jiu-Jitsu performance. Master Maeda is so fascinated by Brazil that he soon decides to stay there forever. Jiu-Jitsu was already well established in Brazil at that time, so Maeda and Satake soon founded their Jiu-Jitsu school. Maeda was not the first Japanese to teach this martial art in Brazil, as is partly to be believed. For various reasons that I tell in my book, Maeda traveled to Europe, but in the spring of 1921, after returning from Europe, Maeda finally founded his own dojo. It was first located

Gracie Jiu Jitsu behind his house in a barn, later in the clubhouse of the rowers of Belém. Almost at the same time his friend Satake decided to close his Jiu-Jitsu school and move away from Brazil. Many of his students changed over to Maeda, including the first three black belts of Master Satake. One of them was the young and talented Donato Pires dos Reis, son of a very famous doctor who later became a respected politician. Master Pires founded his own Jiu-Jitsu school in Rio de Janeiro in 1935, which was soon taken over by his assistants, Carlos, George and Hélio Gracie.

From observer to teacher Hélio Gracie spent most of his time observing his brother Carlos' lessons. But one day, Hélio had to fill in for his brother Carlos because he was late for his lesson. From that day on, the students only wanted to train with Hélio. Hélio Gracie thus became the new head instructor of the family and the inventor of this new way of teaching. In 1930, Donato Pires dos Reis made an offer to the Gracie brothers (Carlos, George and Hélio). He had been offered a new instructor position in Rio de Janeiro and at the same time planned to establish his own Jiu-Jitsu Academy. This gave the Gracie’s the opportunity to become Pires' assistants and perhaps later take over his school. At that time Master Pires Academy was the second official Jiu-Jitsu school in Rio de Janeiro. The first school in Rio de Janeiro had already been opened in 1925 by Master Angenor Moreira Sempaio from São Paolo, a master student of Sada Miyake. Master Sempaio had become quite famous with his Jiu-Jitsu school at that time and successfully led the Jiu-Jitsu instructor group of the "Guarda Civil" in Rio de Janeiro. Master Pires' reputation as a Jiu-Jitsu teacher and his connections with the local police forces in Rio were excellent, so that the regional medias reported enthusiastically on the opening of his JiuJitsu Academy. But just one year later, on 27 June 1931, Master Pires received another offer and immediately travelled to Santa Caterina, where he settled down for good. This was the chance for the Gracie brothers to run their school of Jiu-Jitsu.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu As my teacher Pedro Hemetério told me, Grandmaster Hélio Gracie was really very talented; Hélio had simplified and improved a lot as the new head of the school. But even within the Gracie family, even today, there is a dispute about who really was the "Inventor" of the Gracie System. Some say it was Carlos Gracie, others say it was Hélio Gracie. Master Hemetério believed that both made important contributions. The fact is, however, that from a point in time (around the end of the 1950s) Master Hélio took over the leadership of the family as his brother Carlos retired more and more to devote himself more to the study of the Gracie Diet and spiritualism.

Hélio Gracie, the fighter One of the longest fights of Hélio, was against the famous Japanese (Judo) fighter Masahiko Kimura. The fight, which took place in Brazil, lasted three hours and forty-five minutes, non-stop. Hélio Gracie not only won this fight against a famous champion ...and among his conquests are said to be such famous names as professional boxers... Stop, stop, stop! Well Hélio Gracie really had a lot of challenging fights, but he didn't win the fight against Kimura. The agreement for the duel against Kimura was as follows: if the Gracie passed the first round, Kimura would award the victory to the Gracie’s. One of the reasons for this was that Hélio was about twenty years older and weighed about one-third of Kimura's weight. In total, Master Hélio fought 19 fights known to me until he lost his last fight in 1955 against a former student named Waldemar Santana and retired from the competition scene. His older brother George Gracie, who is hardly known today, entered the ring a full 40 times. He began his career in 1930 with the fight against the boxer Tohannes, until he finally lost in 1950 in São Paolo against Hélio Gracie's best student and at the same time my teacher, Pedro Hemetério, in a “submissiononly” Jiu-Jitsu fight.

The fine differences Between the traditional Ju-Jutsu taught by Esai Maeda at that time and the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of the Gracie family, there are differences in the shortening of the distance (clinch) and in the floor techniques. These are the most important training focus of the Gracie’s. In the well-known Ju-Jutsu schools, on the other hand, one only tries to control the attacker from a standing position.

Only one goal: bring your opponent down For the Gracie’s there is only one goal, to bring the opponent directly to the ground and finish him there. This kind of Jiu-Jitsu is not even found in Japan today (like this), but as it was recently published in many Japanese newspapers, it has found many followers again. When I wrote these two paragraphs at that time, I also trained and taught JKD Concepts, Filipino Martial Arts and Thai boxing with my brother Demetrio. Thai boxing was very much part of our teaching program and so, even though I had trained Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for several years at that time, our motto was: solve the problem quickly while standing! I didn't necessarily think that I would go down or that my opponent could bring me down. In 1991, when Sifu Paul Vunak took me to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, a whole new world and dynamic opened for us. Someone who was close to the martial philosophy of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and who was also teaching in Los Angeles was the Japanese professional shooter Yorinaga Nakamura, with whom I attended the IMB Academy of Richard Bustillo and the Dan Inosanto Academy in Santa Monica for shoot wrestling as much as I had time. Nakanmura Sensei was a tiger gym top student of the inventor of shoot wrestling, Satoru Sayama, and a very talented martial artist and a very good and tuff fighter.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu Even though the training was trained by Nakamura-san throwing techniques and floor techniques, the stand was practically Thai boxing again. In Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, on the other hand, emphasis was placed on a direct clinch, quick closing of the distance (bridging), and control of the opponent in order to bring the opponent down to the ground as quickly as possible. At the Vacirca Academy, we passed on both variations, because Thai boxing was (and is) an important aspect of our training, that why it is still taught in our Gracie Concepts program today. Old and new The Gracie family has many techniques that come from the traditional style, but these have been simplified and perfected over time, with many other schools standing by the old techniques. The Gracie family has been in business for over seventy years. Most of the family members are world-renowned fighters with an excellent reputation. Due to the numerous Vale-Tudo (Bras. for everything is goes), which were in the 50s, 60s and 70s today's Mix-Martial-Arts events that took place all over Brazil, not only were the fighters and styles tested, but as Grandmaster Reyson Gracie once said to me: "...Vale-Tudo was like a laboratory for us, where we tested our techniques for effectiveness and efficiency!” I'm not saying that Hélio or Carlos Gracie didn't care about tradition, but that they had defined new approaches in terms of application. They wondered whether one technique or another was better. Of course, this also changed in Brazil over the years. I assume it started when Hélio Gracie, Pedro Hemetério, and Hélio Vigio founded the first Jiu-Jitsu Federation in Rio de Janeiro. In the early days, Jiu-Jitsu was practically taught in private classes, but with the steady growth of interest in the country, a sportorganization was needed to properly promote both Vale-Tudo and sport Jiu-Jitsu. In order to be able to implement this, Master Hemetério told me, they looked at Judo, Sambo and Wrestling and tried to determine the best possible competition rules and a professional development program. But this was not easy, because the "Brazilian" Jiu-Jitsu, developed rapidly and the schools were stomping out of all holes, Mestre Pedro told to me.

Intensive training If you can attend a training session at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, USA, you will immediately notice that there is a difference in the way they teach. How to achieve precision in a natural way? Probably by participating regularly and consistently in training, which can quickly become a problem for many people. Most Jiu-Jitsu beginners are euphoric in the beginning and appear almost every evening for every training. After a while they realize that not the quantity, but the quality is decisive.

Gracie Fundamentals is our beginner program for adults. In this program, you will learn the 36 core techniques of Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in an safe and cooperative environment. Each one-hour lesson addresses one standing and one ground self-defense technique. You can start the program at any time, without previous experience and, since safety is our number one concern, there is no competitive sparring in this program. Upon successful completion of the Gracie Fundamentals program you will earn your Gracie JiuJitsu Blue Belt which will qualify you for advancement into the Gracie Advanced program. Although Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of over 600 techniques, studies of real fights conducted by members of the Gracie Family have shown that 36 techniques have been used more often and with greater success than all the other techniques combined.
