Welcome to the second issue of the 'KYUSHO LIVE' series, with which you will be able to advance in our Instructor training reserved for black belts of any art, style or method. The 2nd DVD will provide you with all the information of the first level of learning. Students at this level will focus on these 3 guiding principles of the PinPoint™ method: body movement, center control, Kyusho: arm, head and leg points. These elements however, create only the "basic box" capable of containing the more advanced connecting principles, which represent the true effectiveness of the martial arts: root, center, wave, spiral, which together with the study of the axes, lead to a level of effectiveness where the saying "maximum effect with minimum effort" can finally find its concrete expression. The knowledge of the weak parts of the opponent's body combined with the awareness of the correct alignment and structure of our body merge into one. Kyusho becomes real, it ceases to be mystical, there are no secrets in Kyusho! Master Gianluca Frisan and Master Pascut Fulvio will make available to everyone the information learned in over 30 years of experience... information often kept secret, principles perhaps shown but not explained, now they are explained in detail so that you too can learn them and make them yours!

Sifu Paolo Cangelosi presents a true pearl of the traditional programs of the Hung Gar style, according to the lineage of the Grand Master and hero Wong Fei Hung, considered the father of modern Hung Gar. It is the form “Loon Ying - the Shadow of the Dragon", extracted from the forms Ng Ying Kune and Sap Ying Kune. The beginning of this set involves the study of Dragon techniques, through a very sophisticated and complex system based on psychocorporal techniques, breathing, dynamic tension of the tendon and muscle fasciae, isotonic techniques flanked by emissions of guttural sounds that refer to the emotions and moods of the individual, as well as vibrations that correspond to the energetic tone of the vital organs. All this has a great association with the canons of traditional Chinese medicine and technically in its practice can be seen expressed in the form of the dragon where we will find a succession of combinations of sounds and movements that create this energetic and emotional dance in a chronological order to free the human being of his mental blockages, his physical and psychological weakness and reactivate the vital functions of the organs and viscera connected to each other. This is the main essence of this wonderful exercise that has taken its place in the most important forms of the Hung Gar style. You will surely get the most out of it by going on to study the "Tit Sin Kune" form, where you will specialize and complete this cultural technical panorama, treasure of the great studies carried out and transmitted by the great master Tit Kiu San.

Racism, nationalism, and exclusion in Martial Arts Racism, nationalism, and exclusion in Martial Arts
“All things become important at the limits, where they cease to be.”
Eduardo Chillida (Sculptor)
Scientists have isolated a little fraction of our DNA, the DNA Mitochondria, a group of genetic markers situated in the periphery of the ovule, which, by not mixing in the nucleus with the genetic contributions of the father and mother, has remained almost immaculate from the beginnings of our species some 150,000 years ago in Africa. This message is transmitted from mothers to daughters and is perpetuated through them. In this way, the scientists have established a series of families, of “Eves”, which come from the original in Africa, and which shaped “family groups” in areas like the Middle East, Italy, Spain, etc….
Through the analysis of our DNA, we can know exactly what the origin is of each one of us following our genealogical tree into its remotest past. The conclusions of this study, done principally at the University of Oxford, are extraordinary: There was very little differentiation among our ancestors and today the differences between us are miniscule since we all have a common origin. The races are simple adaptations to different climatic conditions but their origins have no relationship at all with belonging to one or the other family. One can belong to the family that comes from the Middle East and be white, black, red or yellow.
To know of ourselves with scientific certainty that we are all brothers must put more than one in an uncomfortable situation, determined to find substantial differences in their structure and ancestry, in their defects, and in their culture, country and even native land. When we look at things with enough perspective the same thing always happens, the differences dissolve, the common, the underlying sense of unity prevails and exclusion, in any form, becomes the simple nightmare of someone shortsighted, what a friend of mine rightly calls, small-minded people.
The Martial community is, generally speaking, much more open to other cultures than the average citizen of their country. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that the majority of us have learned to appreciate, through our training, the implicit cultural values in the difference between the East and the West. If your Master has not been Korean, Philippine, Chinese or Japanese (for example!), it is sure that the Master of your Master was. This led, as all things during their first and epic periods, to certain excesses that have fortunately been disappearing. Excesses that generated ridiculous situations and some, it must be said, abusive: I remember when it seemed that any guy with almond-shaped eyes had to be a Martial Arts Master! We counted the push-ups in Japanese and when it came to giving classes, we took our imitations to paroxysms and wound up speaking like we were Indians, How! You hit more hard! You not know well posture! You need train more! Etc…
On the other hand, some Eastern Masters didn’t take pains to bring their Art closer to our culture, nor did they even know how to go about it; because many didn’t do it, they didn’t even learn the local language well. Some of them fell into the temptation of trying to control the evolution of the incipient national sports organizations and they did it with an iron hand and with absolute contempt for the democratic methods in practice; others converted their schools into private hunting grounds where they abused their ascendance over the students. Fortunately, we have been overcoming these and many other abuses and all of us have matured a lot since then.
Racism, nationalism, and exclusion in Martial Arts Racism, nationalism, and exclusion in Martial Arts
Another form of exclusion in which some decide to fall is that of nationalism. In some countries more than others I have been able to observe little chauvinist factions that think that they are better than the rest… some write me lines like, “Let’s see when you will publish more about the experts in our country, who are the best,” or, “The only thing we are interested in is what happens in our country,” etc. Or, “I think your magazine brings in too many foreign experts,” and other similar compliments.
Fortunately, the majority doesn’t see things like this, living proof of it is that our magazine is “alive and kicking” in a lot of countries and in seven languages, but it hasn’t ceased to be symptomatic to encounter people who still make the effort to look for “their difference” through nationalism. When I was little and got on an airplane for the first time I admired the fact that I could verify that from the air the countries were not like on the political maps. In reality, those lines didn’t exist anywhere!
In my opinion, exclusion, in any of form, finds its ultimate reason for existing and sinks its deepest roots in only one thing: fear. Fear of what is different is natural. The different is unknown, and the unknown, my friend, as much as it might attract, we don’t like at all! However, it is necessary to know how to channel this natural tendency: as always, the solution is not fighting against the darkness, but simply turning on the light. One must learn and affirm oneself internally; whoever is strong internally is not afraid, since he or she knows that they will respond to danger if it presents itself. On the other side, the weak person, the sickly, yield to pressure and need to re-affirm themselves in some way, and better to do it marking a line on the ground, a border, a difference, although these are always an agreement, a formal framework, in sum, an excuse.
Patriotism is not nationalism (or it shouldn’t be!). It is, shall we say, the positive side, the “luminous overleaf” of nationalism. Patriotism helps many people to visualize common spaces of that which they feel as “the closest family”. Love of the land where you were born, or of the land that welcomes you (Don Quijote said, “One is not from where they were born but from where they graze!”), honors the one who practices it since through love of the small one can reach the love of the great, discovering that at the end, all is One; love (Eros), the universal force of fusion, dictates it so. However, those who can see the whole will love all lands and will respect them as one mother who is the mother of us all. Gea, Pachamama, Primordial Venus, Mother Earth, it is one thing with infinite names, a wonderful miracle in the enormous empty spaces of the Universe.
Today I began my editorial with the quotation of a great artist who I admire, the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida; he left us a few months ago. Like all great artists, his spirit brushed the infinite , transforming him into a visionary, someone who emerged from the collective unconscious, into a Master. I wanted to finish this text with another admirable quotation of this great sculptor, a quotation that is closely tied to the theme that concerns us today. I leave you in good hands until next month:
“I believe that the horizon, just as I see it, could be the motherland of al

Octopus Combatives
Introduction
Having trained with Avi Nardia for many years now, I am very familiar with the phrase “No brain, no KAPAP” – a phrase that embodies his vision to teach his students how to think before teaching them how to fight.
Therefore, it’s not surprising that the most recent program that Master Nardia is developing is represented by an octopus, a cephalopod with 9 brains. As with other systems developed by Avi, Octopus Combatives is based on universal concepts of body mechanics and conflict psychology and continues to evolve based on feedback from practitioners and instructors who have helped develop and implement the program.
The first version of the program was developed for in Total Security Group in Africa, with operations in Angola, Kenya, Chad and specializing in training for private security, close protection, counterterrorism and other security groups.
Written by: Chris Cotter
Acore requirement for the program was that it be non-lethal, even at the highest level of conflict escalationan idea proposed by the owner of the Sadex company, Emil Amir Sade. Additionally, a crucial component of the program’s success is its ability to be easily taught and learned, the principles being applicable both to new practitioners as well as seasoned martial or combative artists, providing them a framework to either develop a foundational martial capability or to round out their existing knowledge and expertise. Recently, the program has taken on a new life and is pivoting from being for the exclusive use of Total Security Group to now being expanded internationally and developing a more holistic approach to the program.
History
Having now been implemented for over a year with Total Security Group, it’s become apparent based on its success, that the Octopus Combatives system’s structure is central to its effectiveness. As a compact, easy to learn system, it needed to have very basic concepts that can be applied in many circumstances to develop an almost limitless number of techniques. Such techniques can then be drilled both without and with resistance to ensure their effectiveness. As this program continues being used by Total Security Group, they are constantly learning and developing new techniques and drills, creating a living system that is continuously improving.
Developing a non-lethal program in a country where there is daily violence and turmoil was challenging but between the collaboration of Master Nardia, Aleksandra Nardia and Chris Cotter, the initial version of the program was published in a relatively short, forty-one-page manual. The eight core concepts central to the system are:
Relative Position:
Whether a practitioner is a security guard, law enforcement or even a civilian, relative position is one of the key principles in the lead up to a confrontation. By maintaining optimal distance and assuming a non-threatening posture, one can control the dynamics of the engagement, oftentimes able to de-escalate a potentially hostile scenario before it begins. Additionally, if a confrontation does escalate to a fight, being able to manage your relative position to employ the maximum number of “tools” (this will depend on your role and the situation) to the conflict while denying your enemy the advantage of surprise.
Two Points of Contact:
The principle of two points of contact emphasizes the importance of maximizing control over an opponent's movements. The program outlines three sub-components: Upper and Lower T (shoulder line and hip line), application of pressure points for standing manipulation and controlling the centerline. Whether clinching in close quarters or grappling on the ground, having two points of contact increases the practitioner's versatility and control, enabling them to execute techniques and exert control.
Push and Pull:
The concept of push and pull lies refers to the simultaneous pushing and pulling at two key points of the body. This is related directly to the body mechanics and physics of action and reaction. That is to say, if you exert force in one direction on a target object, it is very easy for that object to react by absorbing the force by angling the body or creating distance or by fighting against the force through an equal and opposite reaction. However, if you apply force at two points on opposite sides of the body and the force is applied in opposite directions, you are able to control the centerline or to control either the upper T or lower T of your opponent, thus limiting movement and establishing control.
Balance Displacement:
Maintaining balance is crucial in any physical altercation and the ability to disrupt an opponent's equilibrium can be the difference between success or failure. The Octopus Combatives system establishes core principles of balance displacement and practitioners work to identify weaknesses in their opponent’s stance (known as the principle of the third leg). While we often think of balance as being something exclusively occurring in a standing altercation, the principle extends to ground fighting and borrows from push and pull and two points of contact.
Pressure Point Control Techniques:
Understanding the body's pressure points can be a gamechanger in self-defense scenarios and this concept has been woven into the fabric of Octopus Combatives. By targeting specific anatomical vulnerabilities, practitioners can inflict pain, disrupt motor functions, or incapacitate opponents with minimal force. From nerve strikes to joint locks, pressure point control techniques serve as force multipliers, allowing individuals to overcome size and strength disparities through precise and focused application. Through diligent study and practical application, Octopus Combatives practitioners develop a nuanced understanding of human anatomy, enhancing their ability to effectively neutralize threats while minimizing collateral damage.
SPEC (Secure, Position, Effect of Release, Create Distance):
The Octopus Combatives system was specifically designed to avoid conflict escalation and in order to accomplish this, it’s essential that you retain your firearm, as this would immediately escalate a conflict to life and death. An effective method to maintain your firearm is the SPEC system (Secure, Position, Effect of Release and Create Distance). Secure refers to ensuring your weapon doesn’t get un-holstered by protecting it with one or both hands. Position is the relative position of your body to maintain control of your weapon and make it less accessible to your opponent. Effect of release is the clearing of the opponent’s offending hand or grip and creating distance refers to separating yourself from the opponent to better judge the situation and re-establish control.
Fearless Determination:
Courage in the face of danger is a cornerstone of effective self-defense, and practitioners of Octopus Combatives are provided drills and training under pressure to develop their mental resilience. Fear is a natural response to threat, but it can also be a paralyzing force if left unchecked. Through mental conditioning and scenario-based training, individuals learn to confront their fears and maintain composure under pressure. By cultivating a mindset of fearless determination, Octopus Combatives practitioners are better equipped to overcome adversity and take decisive action when confronted with danger. This psychological resilience serves as a force multiplier, enabling individuals to perform at their peak even in the most challenging circumstances.
Dichotomy Between Liability and Use of Force:
Central to the philosophy of Octopus Combatives is a nuanced understanding of the ethical and legal implications of self-defense actions. The program emphasizes the importance of exercising restraint and discernment in the use of force, recognizing that every action carries potential consequences. While the priority is to ensure personal safety, practitioners are also mindful of their responsibilities to avoid unnecessary harm and adhere to legal guidelines. This is best conceptualized by the ladder of escalation (also known as the plus one principle) whereby the amount of force exerted by the opponent is met with only one-level greater force in order to prevent unnecessary harm.
As the program was developed to get a new team up to speed with no prior experience, the first version of the Octopus Combatives system also included a section on assessing new recruits, giving examples of drills and techniques and addressing trauma and first aid. Since its introduction, the Octopus Combatives system has received enthusiastic praise from the leadership of the team and is now the primary basic training curriculum for all specialists.
Program Evolution
While the initial program development was for a very specific use case, having seen its effectiveness in quickly developing security practitioners, it became apparent that such a program could be repurposed using the same structure, but tailoring the concepts to apply to a wide array of practitioners, from law enforcement to close protection, from combative arts practitioners to civilians with no prior martial arts knowledge.
In order to realize this vision, Avi enlisted the expertise of Sensei Leon Koh, a seasoned martial arts instructor and student of combat psychology with extensive experience teaching law enforcement, private security and civilians. Together, Avi Nardia, Chris Cotter and Leon Koh worked to continue evolving the Octopus Combatives system in March of 2024 to expand its applicability. Since then, Sensei Leon has been testing the new program at his school in Singapore, Cadre Academy and Avi is working with key partners in the private security industry to further refine and consolidate the program. The goal is to have a program that runs between two and eight weeks for civilians and existing martial or combative arts practitioners, with each class focusing on a different concept in the program. For law enforcement, this will be a supplemental program to their existing training, taught in an eight-week format, but providing more drills tailored to real-life scenarios they are likely to encounter. For private security groups, this will also be an eight-week program, but can function either as their primary training program (as is the case with the team in Angola), complete with physical conditioning, individual assessments and numerous drills, or as a supplemental program with just the concepts taught to augment their existing program. Students are encouraged to continue developing and building on the concepts taught to fit their personal fighting style and are provided a framework from which to hone and develop their capabilities (shown below).
Current State
In order to ensure applicability to a wide range of students with diverse backgrounds and their own unique goals they are seeking to achieve through their study, the Octopus Combatives system was re-structured into a higher-order framework. This structure can be summed up with the following pyramid:
This structure provides a hierarchical approach to understanding the core focus of the student and ensure their journey through the program meets their particular needs. Each level provides an introspective and it is up to the instructor to work with the student to develop a tailored program based on this framework. Below are a few examples of different practitioners and how the program could be tailored to meet their goals and background.
Use case – Close Protection Specialist:
A close protection specialist is looking to improve their capabilities and hone their skills. They will start at the bottom of the pyramid and work their way up.
Philosophy – For a close protection specialist, their philosophy should be Holistic Risk Management (HRM), therefore, they are seeking to provide complete protection for their client.
Skills – In order to achieve this, what are the particular soft skills and threshold skills that are required? Communication, observation, negotiation come to mind as requisite soft skills. Surveillance, comprehensive defensive tactics and first aid are likely to be high on the list for threshold skills.
Concepts – For a close protection specialist, relative position will be the most crucial, both in relation to the principle and their own placement within a potential multi-person detail. SPEC, PPCT and two points of contact are also essential, not only for offensive techniques, but also defensive. They may need to redirect a principle who is frozen in place due to the circumstances – two points of contact is essential for controlling and monitoring the principle, as an example.
Drills – Once the relevant applicable concepts are identified, specific drills and by extension ‘techniques’ can be developed to prepare the student for scenario based training exercises. After they are able to demonstrate their ability to perform under normal circumstances, pressure and stress can be added to ensure the techniques work and the concept applies to the technique being drilled. Once the concept has been reinforced, the student will be able to perform and improvise in a real situation, even if that situation deviates from the particular drill.
Use case – Civilian:
A civilian who has a background in boxing and is looking to better understand and complement their existing martial arts knowledge with a complete system will have a very different goal and therefore a very different journey through their training.
Philosophy – For an already experienced martial artist, their philosophy may entail seeking to be better able to defend themselves and others in a variety of situations, using their boxing as their primary fighting method, but wanting to be comfortable if the fight goes to the ground and be more proficient in defense against weapons.
Skills – In general the skills would entail having greater situational awareness and de-escalation capabilities as soft skills and endurance, flexibility and mobility as threshold skills.
Concepts – Relative position would also be critical in order to protect those around them. In addition, two points of contact, push and pull and liability and use of force would be critical concepts for the practitioner to be successful.
Drills – With the concepts identified, drills should revolve around the ladder system for escalation of force (plus one principle), working to control distance to maintain the advantage in the style they are most comfortable with and core concepts of ground fighting and weapons. This can be trained via private lessons with an experienced instructor to tailor the program, or simply by following the full eight-week program and further refining and drilling the exercises that are most relevant to their personal goals.
Future State
As we continue to develop and refine the Octopus Combative system, we will take the lessons learned through practical instruction and the feedback from private security teams, martial arts schools, law enforcement officers and close protection specialists to build and refine the program. Our ultimate goal is to have a compact, comprehensive system that is easy and fun to learn and accessible to everyone from those making their initial foray into martial arts to those who are experienced practitioners who are seeking to round out and enhance their current capabilities.
Furthermore, a curriculum for instructors is being developed, equipping existing instructors with the tools to understand and teach the concepts within the Octopus Combatives system. Avi Nardia Academy will be providing instruction for leaders, complete with a framework to iteratively generate drills based on the foundational concepts. This instructor training course will be much more involved than the simpler student course and therefore, require intensive study and examination. In order to demonstrate an internalization of the concepts and achieve a certification, a prospective instructor candidate must be able to create a tailored program and develop drills leveraging the concepts and based on the specific goals of the student in the scenario.
Conclusion
The Octopus Combatives system represents the culmination of decades of work, effectively distilling and consolidating the sum total of Master Avi Nardia’s training and conceptualization of combat. Together with the expertise from leaders around the world in martial arts and other domains, the Octopus Combatives system synthesizes many different perspectives and feedback from experts worldwide into a holistic, effective and easy to learn program.
The eight fundamental principles combined with a structural approach to tailor the program to the needs of the practitioner, the Octopus Combatives system is a groundbreaking approach to self-defense, encompassing both tactical effectiveness and ethical responsibility. By integrating the eight concepts and understanding their applicability and effectiveness in a range of circumstances, Octopus Combatives provides practitioners with a versatile toolkit for navigating threatening situations with confidence and clarity. Moreover, by emphasizing the importance of fearless determination and a nuanced understanding of the legal and ethical implications of self-defense actions, Octopus Combatives fosters not only physical preparedness but also mental resilience and ethical maturity. As the realm of selfdefense continues to evolve, the Octopus Combatives system stands out as an innovative and compact program, empowering individuals to protect themselves and others while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.

HARIMAU
The way of the warrior shaman
The tiger combines in a single specimen the most important skills for survival in a hostile environment such as the Asian jungle. Strength, agility, cunning, aggressiveness, alertness, and endurance are elements grouped in one animal forming an explosive mixture. Terror and at the same time admiration for this portentous being led Southeast Asian man to develop a combat system completely inspired by the tiger by naming the style Harimau Silat or Macan (pronounced Macian) Silat in the modern Indonesian language.
I had already read about this style and made constant mention of it whenever I was in that area of the world, everyone knew at least its name. Many silat practitioners boasted that their art belonged to the tiger style, others spoke of it as something obsolete, and still others suggested that I travel to the island of Sumatra if I wanted to find something original again.
So I did
Arriving in Sumatra the task was not easy, I went around to the different schools asking right and left with little success until a local master told me to wait until Sunday morning because at the place indicated to me I would find people practicing Harimau. The day and time arrived, and I went to the postro where indeed there were people, of all ages, practicing wearing beautiful white kimonos, and the circular emblem on their chests told me it was the right school: it said harimau above the image of a tiger. The class began. After the introductory gymnastics they performed the forms or rather katas that I immediately recognized belonged to Shotokan Karate, and only at that moment did I become aware of the fact that indeed the tiger is also the symbol of one of the most popular styles of Karate in the world: shotokan karate.
I did not give up and extended my search, left the motorcycle and took the bus to a village about two hours from where I was staying. After a day of fruitless searching I missed the courier that was supposed to take me back to my lodging. I found a ride that took me halfway there. At that point, where the pickup truck that had given me the ride left me, a bus to the city was supposed to pass by.
It wasn't
The bus would not pass until the next morning.
What was I doing at the edge of the jungle as evening approached?
A farmer pointed me to a village, half-hidden in the bush, within a ten-minute walk, and so I did in the hope of finding a ride back to my hotel. I arrived and waited for someone with any means of locomotion to show up, and in the meantime I took to asking questions. Unexpectedly I got affirmative answers: there was a great Harimau master (guru besar) there. Soon an elderly farmer arrived, showing at least 60 years of age, and told me that he knew the tiger style but added that he could not give me a demonstration until his master joined us. I immediately thought it was a joke: if he was at least 60 years old his master had to be at least 80, it was not believable.
Instead it was just that
As those skeptical thoughts were swirling in my head a very small, skinny little man appeared on the horizon with skin that denounced the sun's constant offenses. He was holding a sickle, was barefoot and his face lit up with a sympathetic smile despite the absence of some teeth. Cordially I was invited to his abode. Not far from where we met was a large wooden house built like a stilt house, the wooden floor was at least two meters above the ground. The heavy monsoon rains formed real rivers whose water would flow under the house if necessary without invading it.
Sitting on the mat we began to talk about Pencak Silat, the help of a
young nephew, who knew English, was essential since Master Malano so the elderly farmer was called, spoke more the Minagkabau language (West Sumatran area) than the official Indonesian idiom. We talked about the difference between government Silat and the styles that still barely survived in the female companions. This was not a fixation of mine, but a style that was already well organized and spread nationally or internationally would not satisfy the spirit of researcher in me. I certainly do not want to say that one is better than the other, but it would not have been necessary to venture to the Asian continent to learn about studying and practicing a style that I could find in Europe or in the more convenient America. Moreover, the chance to find and spread styles on the road to extinction gave me far greater personal satisfaction. Of course, the other way would have been much easier I was among the first Westerners, not only, even the first among Italians, to travel the length and breadth of the Indonesian archipelago to learn about Silat, so several times I had the offer to become the representative of this or that style in Italy but I always politely declined.
My intent was completely different: I was interested in learning about what even in the homeland was no longer practiced. You would think that if a style tends to disappear there must be a reason.
No!
They simply, brutally, go out of fashion. Other activities closer to Chinese or Japanese styles,
on the other hand, flourished with the favor of government associations and international contacts. However, as I have said elsewhere, not all that glitters is gold. Many were the times when I had a blunder. Many were the times when I thought I had found an interesting thread and instead the so-called style resolved itself into some movement that was more aesthetic than substantive.
Fortunately, that day was not the case
The very old man knew his stuff. After words, he moved on to deeds he took his elderly pupil and placing themselves
at diametrically opposite corners of the wooden hall, they began to do a kind of dance, without music, always staying away from each other. They seemed to mirror each other's movements, elegant, intense, full of emotional tension but the muscles of both were never tense, yet ready to explode just as if they were the tigers they were inspired by in their movements. At one point the two approached the center of the room and with great theatricality increased the tension by slowing their gestures to a crawl. Suddenly the two exploded into a series of attacks and parries with punches and kicks, holds and releases. At one point the elderly master was thrown to the floor and from the ground began a

simulated fight against the other who was standing. It was then that I realized that I had found what I was looking for. Actually before I had no clear ideas but only a vague imagination because I had no reference models, it was rather a feeling surfacing in consciousness. The flow of my thoughts was interrupted by the appearance in the hands of the standing opponent of a curved knife. Attacks became faster carried with that strange implement. Attacks that never found the target since, the feet of Master Malano, who was sitting on the ground, leaning back on his hands, acted as if they were other hands.
With his deftly moved feet he deflected attacks and evaded any blocks the other tried to make.
The simulation continued alternating with great ease, and without interrupting the intended rhythm, with both contenders standing, or both on the ground or sometimes with one of them standing and the other on the ground. I was finally witnessing something I had not seen in any of my rounds. I do not want to say more effective (although I must admit that the thought appeared in my mind) but undoubtedly original, very original even ingenious. The extraordinary and private performance over, the two of them returned to sit on mats and sip the inevitable tea. Now I could ask focused, more meaningful questions, and so I did. They told me the history of the style, the names of the master and the master's master, then, however, the lineage was interrupted.
My insistence led him with some hesitation to reveal to me the progenitor: it was the tiger!
How could a tiger have taught a fighting style?
The translator nephew looked away; he did not seem happy with what the elderly master was saying. Not because he was revealing a secret but because in all likelihood the young interpreter was ashamed of the elder's statements. A heated but respectful discussion began between the two. I sensed that the young man was suggesting to the teacher not to talk about their ridiculous superstitions.
My hunches turned out to be correct in fact turning to me in English the interpreter told me to disregard what he was saying about the tiger, since these were stories, fantasies that were passed down in the village and were mostly tales told to children. Curiosity at that point increased,
but the topic was not touched on again. We got to talking about why he had no pupils and why such a beautiful and interesting art was in danger of disappearing. First, he told me that a few pupils, who came from nearby villages, were there and then that the art had not disappeared but had been transformed. The movements of the tiger style now form the basis of the traditional minangkabau dance school where Master Malano had been called, several years earlier, to teach. He advised me to go to the school called ASKI (a kind of conservatory of traditional music and dance) to talk to the children and see how they taught classes.
We finished chatting and started practicing with the teacher, I liked it very much, and the first lesson was followed by other daily lessons.
A few days later I went to Aski. I found the boys with whom I had a chance to talk clearly, who confirmed to me that their choreography was based on the elegant and powerful movements taught to them by Master Malano himself. I witnessed a practical demonstration and, again within the institute, in short order, we went from theory to practice: I asked to learn some movements. Kindly the young conservatory students accommodated me.
However, the movements had lost all martial application none of the boys knew how to draw from those movements the famous techniques that form the backbone of any martial discipline. They knew that each figure was a technique but they did not know how to apply
it, in fact they did not care about it at all.
During one of the training days at Master Malano's house a young man appeared and offered to do the English translation. This was fortunate in that both the Sumatran guru and I were making some effort to speak Indonesian, The master in fact was more comfortable speaking in minankabau than in Bahasa Indonesia (as can still happen today when talking to any elderly person in some small town in southern Italy). I took the opportunity to return to the topic origin of the style and went back to repeating the questions as if I were a moron who had not understood anything of the explanation of a few days earlier. Again embarrassment appeared. This time, however, the elderly man insisted on saying his point in Indonesian, and as he tried to explain he continuously repeated like a refrain “Saya Orang muslim” (I am a Muslim man) as if he had to justify what he was telling me. I was reminded of when my Calabrian grandmother used to tell me about the evil eye and witchcraft in southern Italy, and as she talked to me about it she always quoted Saint Hilary, the Holy God, the Madonna, as protective mantras to create a moral shield over what she was telling me. Fortunately, the new interpreter relented and, trying to downplay with a wry smile on his lips, told me that in the past it was the shamans who by entering a trance state absorbed the spirit of the tiger. In this trance they would learn from the tiger spirit how to fight and how to move. I was astonished but Master Malano was satisfied because at last such an important fact was told to me as he wanted. As I tried to regroup, Master Malano kept repeating his litany about how he was a good Muslim and the other kept belittling it by saying it was fairy tales for the village children. And I would have believed it were it not for the fact that the two of them secluded themselves and argued heatedly, and from that moment the subject was avoided forever. To no avail were my attempts to return to the subject, to the origin of the style. A few years later I had the opportunity
to talk about this with a professor of history of religions who confirmed the existence of shamanic schools in that area, activities that were fiercely opposed and fought by the official religion, no more and no less than what happened in Italy with the repression of tu all supposed alternatives to the dominant religion. Much of the knowledge occurred by entering the spirit mode, in a hypnotic trance that established spiritual contacts with people, animals and entities from which to learn. It was like attending a spiritual university. Upon returning from these swarming journeys one would proceed to concretize what one had learned by turning them into lessons to be imparted to the students.
“You were lucky to come in contact with this reality,” the Western lecturer expert in cultural anthropology told me and added, “in a few years, thanks to the counter information of modern times, no one will know anything anymore and everything will be labeled as children's fables.”
The prophecy has come true.
Introduction to the world of Martial Arts
Martial arts, also known as martial arts, are a fascinating and multi-layered field that goes far beyond mere self-defense techniques. They combine physical fitness, mental discipline, cultural traditions and spiritual growth. These practices have their origins in various cultures and regions of the world, including Asia, Europe and America, and have evolved over the centuries.
Historical development and origins
The origins of martial arts are deeply rooted in history. Many of the styles we know today, such as kung fu, karate and taekwondo, developed in Asia. These systems originated in Buddhist monasteries and were often linked to philosophical and religious teachings. For example, Kung Fu is closely associated with the Shaolin monastery and Zen Buddhism. In Europe, fencing and wrestling techniques focusing on close combat developed in the Middle Ages. These European martial arts were often practiced by knights and soldiers who perfected their skills in war and tournaments.
Classification of Martial Arts
Martial arts can be broadly divided into different categories depending on their origin and focus:
1. Striking techniques: These styles focus on punching, kicking and blocking techniques. Examples include karate, taekwondo and boxing.
2. Throwing techniques: Here the focus is on throws and holds, such as those found in judo and aikido.
3. Grappling: These techniques include leverage and chokeholds as well as ground fighting. Jiu-jitsu and wrestling are prominent examples.
4. Weapon fighting: Some martial arts specialize in the use of weapons, such as kendo (sword fighting) and eskrima (stick fighting).
5. Hybrid styles: Modern martial arts such as mixed martial arts (MMA) combine elements from various traditional disciplines to provide a comprehensive system of self-defense and competition.
Philosophy and ethics
An essential component of many martial arts is the underlying philosophy. This can vary greatly, but often emphasizes values such as respect, discipline, patience and humility. In many Asian martial arts, meditation is an integral part of training to sharpen the mind and find inner peace.
The ethical principles taught in martial arts are not limited to training and competition. They should also be integrated into the practitioner's daily life in order to lead a harmonious and balanced life.
Modern practice and competition
Today, martial arts are practised and appreciated all over the world, both as a sporting activity and as a means of self-defense. In many countries, there are national and international competitions involving different styles and disciplines. The Olympic Games, for example, have integrated judo and taekwondo as official disciplines.
In addition to competition, there is also a strong community of practitioners who see martial arts as a way of life and a means of personal development. Martial arts academies and dojos offer classes for all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced fighters.
Concluding remarks
The world of martial arts is rich and diverse. It offers a unique combination of physical and mental discipline, cultural heritage and modern applications. Whether practiced for self-defense, physical fitness or personal development, martial arts have the potential to profoundly change the lives of those who dedicate themselves to them.
Traditional Martial Arts versus Modern Martial Arts
The world of martial arts is rich in history and diversity, and it has evolved over centuries. A distinction can be made between traditional martial arts and modern martial arts, each of which has unique characteristics and philosophies. While traditional martial arts are strongly linked to cultural heritage and philosophical teachings, modern martial arts are often characterized by their adaptability and integration of different techniques. A deeper look at these two areas reveals their differences and their respective contributions to the world of martial arts.
Traditional Martial Arts
Traditional martial arts often have deeply rooted cultural and historical backgrounds. They are not only fighting methods, but also an expression of a culture and philosophy. Examples of traditional martial arts are
1. **Karate**: Originating in Okinawa, karate has been heavily influenced by Chinese martial arts. It emphasizes striking techniques and strict etiquette.
2 **Kung Fu**: This Chinese martial art is known for its versatility and connection to Buddhist and Taoist teachings. There are many styles, including the famous Shaolin Kung Fu.
3 **Aikido**: A Japanese art developed by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 20th century. Aikido emphasizes harmony and deflecting the attacker's force.
4 **Judo**: Also originating in Japan, Judo was developed by Jigoro Kano in the late 19th century. It focuses on throwing techniques and is an Olympic discipline.
Traditional martial arts often emphasize the importance of kata (set forms or patterns), which serve as a means of training technique, posture and mind. They also include the teaching of ethics and morals, with respect, discipline and self-improvement being central themes.
Modern Martial Arts
Modern martial arts have evolved from traditional disciplines, often by integrating and adapting different techniques to meet the demands of modern life. They are often more pragmatic and less ritualized. Modern martial arts include:
1. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA): one of the best known modern martial arts, combining techniques from various disciplines such as boxing, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and wrestling. MMA is known for its effective and versatile techniques in competition.
2 Krav Maga: Originally developed by the Israeli Defense Forces, Krav Maga is focused on effective self-defense in real-world conditions. It emphasizes fast and efficient techniques to neutralize threats.
3. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ): This variation of Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes ground fighting and controlling the opponent through leverage and choke holds. BJJ is known worldwide and is appreciated both in competition and in self-defense.
4. Kickboxing: A combination of traditional boxing techniques and kicks that became popular in the 1960s. Kickboxing is both a competitive sport and effective training for fitness and self-defense.
Modern martial arts are characterized by their flexibility and adaptability. They are often less bound by strict rules and forms and focus more on practical applications and effectiveness in real life. These disciplines often emphasize free combat and realistic scenarios, which makes them particularly attractive to people looking for practical self-defense techniques.
Differences and similarities
Despite their differences, traditional and modern martial arts also have many similarities. Both require discipline, commitment and regular training. They promote physical fitness and offer psychological benefits such as stress reduction and improved concentration.
Traditional Martial Arts:
- Highly ritualized and formal
- Deep cultural and philosophical roots
- Emphasis on kata and fixed techniques
- Strong emphasis on etiquette and morals
**Modern Martial Arts**:
- Flexible and adaptable
- Practical and realistic application
- Combination of different techniques and styles
- Focus on effectiveness and pragmatic self-defense
Conclusion
The choice between traditional and modern martial arts often depends on the practitioner's individual goals and preferences. Those interested in cultural depth and philosophical teachings will find a rich source of knowledge in traditional martial arts. On the other hand, those looking for practical and effective methods of self-defense will find a suitable discipline in the modern martial arts. Both paths offer valuable lessons and benefits that can enrich the lives of practitioners.
The knife is the most dangerous and feared weapon in a fight. Very easy to get and very often deadly. The Oliva Combat System defense program against a knife attack involves concrete action, efficiency and perfection. It is a total fight, based on simple knife and non-knife fighting mechanisms. A street fight against an armed person requires first of all psychological management and then technical mastery, which can only be obtained through special training. Only in this way can we deal with fear, to give success to the concepts of fighting, resistance and victory. The system could be described as the civilian version of the C.A.T. system ("Cobra Assault Tactics") taught to the Special Forces, which is characterized by extremely direct, aggressive, simple, fast and very effective mechanisms. Through specific high-level tactical-technical training, certain skills are taught that, along with basic training, allow survival in a confrontation with or without a weapon. These skills include: Sensitivity, Reaction, Explosiveness, Body Coordination, Speed, Timing and of course the most important of all, Killer Instinct. "The essential thing is to be as concrete, efficient and perfect as possible. This is the only way we have a chance of defense". This is the objective of the Oliva Combat System. 40 min.

“The Shaolin Monastery is world-famous. The fact that our kung fu comes directly from here is sometimes hard to believe. But that's exactly why we come here.”
“Today, my students were able to experience first-hand what it looks like here today and what the monks at the monastery can do.”
“Chiu Chi Ling, my teacher, spent a large part of our visit mentioning my discipleship and reaffirming it. Even though I and my students had of course known this for some time, these were very nice moments that made us all proud.”
“My favorite part was the performances, which are typical for such a visit. While the hosts showed off their great, modern acrobatics, we captivated the audience with our traditional, tried-and-tested kung fu performances.”
"... Fifty canarians of the best swimmers to be found, each equipped with a cabarco and a dragon tree tablachina". In this way, indigenous Canary Islanders were used as elite troops in the assault on Tenochtitlan, Mexico, early 16th century. This new work of the Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario, focuses on the traditional Tolete, its characteristic grip with one hand in the center, the guards (right, troquiada, ...) and the basic techniques (correderas, vueltas, lazos, molinetes...), as well as its application in combat combinations. In the traditional Tolete canario the objective is to break the armed hand of the attacker and to finish off in a forceful way with a definitive blow. There are no controls or reductions. The opposite happens with its police application, where the proportionality to the aggression and even the aggressor's own integrity is protected by law. The military application does not have these limitations, but its use as defense by the military police does. The characteristics of the Tactical Operational Tolete for the operations of civilian and military police forces favor these aspects as it is an extremely versatile implement. Its dimensions and central grip with effective wrist turns facilitate rapid and repeated striking movements to the armed hand, enabling both its cancellation and the consequent control for an effective reduction, thus preserving the life of the agent and eliminating the threat with the minimum of injury.

“All Things Shall Pass”(part 1)
As I celebrated my 59th birthday, surrounded by cherished pupils whom I've nurtured over the years, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey we've traversed together. Through seven years of toil, tribulation, and triumph, we've forged bonds that transcend mere teacher-student relationships. The joy of that moment enveloped me, as I observed my students interacting with genuine love and care, filling my heart with warmth and contentment.
Yet, amidst the jubilation, a sobering reality intruded upon my thoughts like a storm cloud. The transient nature of such blissful moments became painfully apparent. There were countless instances where I grappled with loneliness and self-doubt, unable to foresee the path ahead amidst recurring setbacks. Each time I dared to hope for smooth sailing, a crisis emerged, often compounded by the unexpected faltering of those I entrusted with leadership roles, leaving me to cleanup the aftermath alone.
The burdens of my students' doubts and fears often eclipsed my own concerns, relegating my well-being to the periphery. I recall a conversation with a Buddhist Monk who humbly referred to himself as "The Mop." When I inquired about the peculiar nickname, he said that like a mop, it cleans everything but the mop itself was dirty.
His analogy struck a chord within me, encapsulating the essence of my existence for decades. I became the metaphorical mop, tirelessly cleaning up the emotional spills and upheavals of those around me, all the while neglecting my own spiritual and emotional upkeep.
For the past 46 years, my life has been devoted to imparting the teachings of the Hwarang Ways to others. Initially, my motives were self-serving, driven by the pursuit of personal recognition and acclaim. I welcomed the trials and tribulations that came my way, propelled forward by a relentless determination to realize my ambitions. There was a singular focus on surmounting every obstacle, no matter how daunting.
Confronted with seemingly insurmountable challenges, I thrived on the exhilaration of problem-solving and overcoming adversity. Taking on tasks deemed impossible by others became a source of immense satisfaction, a euphoria unmatched by any artificial means. The mere suggestion of my limitations served as fuel to defy expectations and prove detractors wrong.
In my youth, curiosity was my constant companion, driving me to question the world around me incessantly. Despite starting school a year younger than my peers, I thrived academically, fueled by a thirst for knowledge. My father, perhaps sensing my potential, consistently pushed me beyond my comfort zone, deliberately subjecting me to challenging circumstances. At the time, I couldn't comprehend his intentions, and resentment often clouded my perception of his actions. Only in hindsight did I grasp the depth of his wisdom and the invaluable lessons hidden within those uncomfortable experiences. Though I begrudged him for it then, I now recognize the profound impact of his guidance, shaping me into the resilient individual I am today. Throughout it all, obedience was my only recourse, as his authority was unquestionable.
I relentlessly pursued success with an unwavering resolve, refusing to accept anything less than victory. From my earliest days as the classroom president in Seoul, Korea, to overcoming the challenges of being the lone Asian student in an all-white American school after immigrating at age 9, I met each obstacle head-on.
Even as a third-grader, I commanded respect and instilled fear in peers spanning multiple grades. During fifth grade, despite grappling with English for just under two years, I clinched victory in the prestigious city-wide spelling bee, triumphing over my white counterparts in a grand event attended by parents and spectators.
As sixth grade dawned, and with it, a more subdued setting for the competition in the cafeteria during lunchtime, devoid of external audience, I once again emerged triumphant, this time sharing first place with a Hispanic female classmate. While racism loomed as a constant presence, I refused to be shackled by its constraints. Instead, it fueled my determination to excel against all odds.
The specter of mediocrity was unacceptable; I resolved to be nothing short of exceptional. I vowed that I would have to be truly exceptional if I am to excel against such opposition.
Elementary school was merely the beginning of a series of challenges that would shape my resilience and thirst for victory. Throughout my life, I encountered numerous trials, each serving to fortify my resolve and propel me towards greater triumphs.
In junior high, I, along with two friends, earned a reputation as formidable figures, entrusted with policing and thwarting theft within the school. High school presented another battleground, where as one of the few Asians amidst a predominantly white student body, I boldly initiated the first martial arts club, Hwa Rang Do, during my sophomore year. Remarkably, the club burgeoned to include over 100 students, comprising a significant fraction of the school populace. Not content with mere extracurricular involvement, I introduced Hwa Rang Do as a Physical Education class and orchestrated awe-inspiring performances at the annual mandatory Hwa Rang Do assembly, captivating the entire student body and faculty alike.
Transitioning to college at the University of Southern California, I continued to blaze trails by establishing a Hwa Rang Do Club on campus. Moreover, I laid the groundwork for the Intercollegiate Hwa Rang Do Society, extending its reach to encompass six other universities.
Amidst many of my successes, I encountered trials in my personal life, fueled by a perception of invincibility that often led me into perilous situations, akin to a cat's nine lives dwindling rapidly. One such defining moment occurred when I attempted a daring stunt to impress my guests, demonstrating my supposed fearlessness by leaping off my balcony, intending to execute a mid-air turn and grasp the railings to pull myself back in. However, the outcome was catastrophic as I overshot my mark, missing the railing entirely and plummeting five stories onto the unforgiving concrete driveway below.
Regaining consciousness in the hospital, I found myself under the skilled hands of doctors as they stitched up a gash on my forehead. Despite the severity of the fall, remarkably, I sustained only minor injuries—a sub-elevated rib, a painful tailbone, but miraculously, no broken bones or sprains. Surviving such a fall, where the odds of survival seemed insurmountable, all the interns and nurses were visiting me to check out the miracle-man who survived a five-story fall. In the adjacent room, a person had succumbed to a mere two-story fall, highlighting the inexplicable nature of my survival.
After only one day in intensive care, I was discharged for home recovery. Initially, the woman whom I had envisioned marrying would care for me, but after a few days, we ended up severing our relationship and I was left to recover in solitude.
The most profound revelation from this brush with death was the surreal experience of witnessing my life flash before my eyes as I plummeted through the air. In those fleeting seconds of descent, time seemed to warp, and my entire life unfolded before me in a rapid succession of memories, as if illuminated by a fast-forwarded slideshow. It wasn't the sensation of falling, but rather a surreal feeling of floating, as if time itself had momentarily paused.
At the time, I lacked religious conviction, yet in the aftermath of my harrowing experience, I found myself grappling with existential questions, pleading with God for answers. Why was I spared? Why did I escape death or debilitating injury? Initially, the weight of this inexplicable survival burdened me, leaving me bewildered and searching for meaning.
However, through introspection and profound selfreflection, my perspective shifted. I came to embrace a deep sense of gratitude for the second chance at life that had been granted to me. Recognizing the fragility and preciousness of existence, I made a solemn vow to God, if He existed, that I would never again take such reckless risks with my own well-being.
In that solemn promise, I found a newfound reverence for life and a profound sense of responsibility to cherish and protect it.
Merely a month later, fate presented me with an unexpected opportunity: a Korean film director approached me to star in his upcoming action movie. For years, I had grappled with the elusive dream of making it in Hollywood as a martial arts action star, yet the path seemed fraught with obstacles. When I was in elementary school as a fresh immigrant, being the only Asian kid with the surname “Lee”, everybody kept asking if I was related to Bruce Lee, being ignorant to the fact that “Lee” is one of the most common surnames in the world. At the time, I had no idea who Bruce Lee was, but when I found out, I made a youthful vow, naively aspiring to replace his name with mine. With determination I ventured into the realm of filmmaking with the hopes of establishing myself in Hollywood. My ultimate aspiration? To bring to life the epic tale of the Ancient Hwarang Warriors on the silver screen, a story that resonated deeply within me.
Despite my lack of prior acting experience and the lingering physical discomfort from my recent fall, I dove headfirst into filming just a couple of months after the incident. Embracing the ethos of low-budget guerrilla filmmaking, I found myself juggling an array of roles and responsibilities. From producing and casting to action-coordinating and screenplay writing, I assumed multiple hats, overseeing every aspect of the filmmaking process both in front of and behind the camera.
In this immersive crash course on filmmaking, it was a sink-or-swim scenario, where I learned through trial and error, gaining invaluable experience and knowledge along the way. Every aspect of the production demanded my full attention and dedication, mirroring the all-encompassing approach I've taken to all endeavors in my life.
I remember the time when I first immigrated to America when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I received an invitation to a pool party which would become a pivotal moment. Back in South Korea, pools were communal gatherings, bustling with hundreds of people, and for kids we never really learned how to swim as we only had access to kneehigh dipping pools. The concept of private pools nestled in people's homes was utterly foreign to me. However, desiring to make new friends I suppressed my fear, and I went to the party, trying to be conscious to stay away from the deep end. As the day progressed and the playing got rougher, they thought it would be entertaining to push me into the deep end. I didn’t know how to swim, but I was more afraid of looking stupid than drowning. So, rather than panicking and asking for help. As soon as I was in the water, I thought to myself that I would just let myself sink to the bottom and push myself up the edge of the pool and that’s exactly what I did. No one knew that I didn’t know how to swim and after that day, I swore I would never let myself be in that situation again, so I taught myself how to swim.
With unrelenting spirit, I poured my heart and soul into completing the film, and finally, it received a theatrical release in South Korea. Eagerly, I journeyed back to my homeland to promote the film I had poured my sweat and tears into. Yet, reality fell short of my lofty expectations.
Even as I faced the disappointment of its lukewarm reception, I couldn't help but acknowledge the film's shortcomings. With a critical eye, I recognized the flaws that plagued it—from my own inexperienced acting to the financial constraints that hindered its production. The timing couldn't have been worse, with the tumultuous backdrop of the LA Riots disrupting our filming schedule and depriving us of crucial shots.
Despite the setbacks, I persevered, embarking on subsequent cinematic ventures. Yet, as fate (no God) would have it, success remained elusive. It became increasingly apparent that perhaps my destiny lay beyond the silver screen.
With my ego bruised and self-esteem hanging by a thread I drifted and wandered for a while in contemplation of my true purpose and what my next chapter will be. During this period my family which was the
bedrock of my life that I found stability and solace was shaken. I lost direction and purpose, and the demons which I suppressed for many years, the dirt and stain which gathered from selflessly cleaning others clawed their way to the surface, forcing me to deal with the stench of the mop. It was a very dark tumultuous time to say the least. However, I made a promise to God and I could not give up on life.
Yet, amid the suffocating fog of self-pity and despair, a glimmer of hope emerged. A distant student approached me with a proposition—to open the first Hwa Rang Do School in Los Angeles. A spark of purpose reignited within me, compelling me to embark on a quest to find the perfect location for this new venture.
But as fate (God) would have it, just as I stood on the precipice of realizing this dream, adversity struck once more. The investor who had pledged support suddenly withdrew, leaving me stranded in a sea of uncertainty, the light dimming once more. Faced with the prospect of defeat, the thought of burdening my father with my troubles weighed heavily on my heart. Yet, with no other recourse, I steeled myself to make the call.
As I reached for the phone, my mind swirling with trepidation, a voice pierced through the silence—a voice I knew so well. Before I could utter a word, my father's resolute inquiry cut through the uncertainty and all he said was, "How much do you need?"
In short, after just three months of operation, I received a stark 3-day notice to pay rent or vacate the premises. Behind on payments, I faced the heartbreaking reality of relinquishing the location. While there are myriad details leading to this juncture, what's crucial to understand is the pivotal moment when the notice arrived, served by a sheriff and two attorneys, right in front of my students during class time.
With nothing to conceal, I retreated to my private chambers within the dojang, my humble abode intertwined with the school. Donning my finest uniform, I resolved to deliver a class that would resonate with the essence of Hwa Rang Do, despite the looming uncertainty. After imparting what would be hailed as the best class of my life, I gathered my students and bared my soul, recounting the trials and tribulations that had led me to that moment.
In that raw moment of vulnerability, I unveiled my undying commitment to the art of Hwa Rang Do, a pledge
to impart its wisdom and teachings, regardless of the circumstances. Moved to tears by the depth of my conviction, my students rallied around me, their support palpable in the air. As I retreated to my quarters, one by one, they knocked at my door, each offering what they could in a collective gesture of solidarity. By the night's end, their contributions had amassed into a sum sufficient to settle the outstanding rent. And so, from that fateful night onwards, the school's doors remained open for the next two decades.
During this period, I found myself ensnared by the allure of a woman who seemed to promise the world. Like a sailor drawn to the song of a siren, I was captivated by her spell, veering off course from the path I had meticulously charted. For the first time in my life, as I neared the midpoint, I dared to prioritize a woman above Hwa Rang Do and my cherished family.
She brought me unparalleled joy and happiness, yet alongside this euphoria came the most profound pain and heartache I had ever known. She became the focal point of my world, and in my desperation to keep her by my side, I sacrificed everything I held dear, as she wished.
The school I had painstakingly nurtured for over two decades, a labor of love, I entrusted to one of my trusted instructors. However, within the span of a mere year, it slipped through his fingers, lost to the winds of misfortune.
Motivated by the belief that life was incomplete without her, I mustered the courage to propose, binding our futures together in eternal promise. As we embraced our engagement, we faced the uncertainty of tomorrow with hearts full of hope and the enduring strength of love. However, after spending five years together, she unexpectedly ended our relationship one day, leaving me shattered. It felt like the end of my world, as if the last flicker of happiness had been snuffed out, leaving me engulfed in darkness. As I reached the milestone of turning 50, the weight of this loss felt even heavier.
In the depths of despair, I found myself teetering on the edge of giving up on life altogether. Yet, amidst the darkness, a faint echo resounded in my mind—the promise I had made to God years ago never to be reckless with my own life. It served as a beacon of light in the darkness, reminding me to hold on, to persevere, even in the face of overwhelming despair.
Having been stripped of all that I held dear, at my most vulnerable, God once again came knocking and this time I received Him. He humbled me, bringing me to my knees in a moment of profound surrender. As a man who once believed that you should pray with your head up and not looking down, I found myself prostrated on the ground, seeking to lower myself even further, if only the floor would allow. In that moment, I surrendered completely, relinquishing all control to God.
Through the passage of fifty years, I've come to understand that my meticulously laid plans often unravel in ways I never anticipated. Despite my best efforts, I found myself facing failure time and time again. Yet, amidst the chaos of my own making, I discovered a comforting truth: God's steadfast presence, patiently waiting by my side, observing every twist and turn of my journey.
In hindsight, I realize that God's hand was always guiding me, silently urging me to open my heart to Him, to relinquish control and allow His divine will to unfold. It was a choice of my own free will, a conscious decision to surrender to His guidance, to let Him take the reins and lead me toward a path of greater purpose and fulfillment.
I faced every challenge head-on, unafraid of the difficulties that lay ahead. While there are countless more tales to tell from my journey, perhaps they are meant for another time, perhaps even for the pages of a book.
Reflecting on my experiences, I'm reminded of the poignant lyrics of the famous song "My Way." “I did it my way and I did take the blows.” But the song's narrative lacks a crucial epilogue—did the protagonist succeed? Did he find true
happiness? As experienced in my own life the epilogue to that song would be “I did it my way and I failed; the only way is God’s Way.”
I once harbored countless plans, dreams, and desires, but it took a journey of cleansing and surrender to bring me to a place of profound humility. In releasing every plan, wish, and longing, I found myself transformed into a vessel of divine grace—a child of God, brimming with wonder, joy, and boundless gratitude.
The mercy and grace freely bestowed upon me became a gift of salvation, leading me to embrace a new identity as a warrior of Jesus Christ. He, the embodiment of Truth, Life, and the Way, became my King—the sovereign ruler whom I wholeheartedly serve, recognizing Him as the King of kings!
Over the course of the next two years, I embarked on a journey of spiritual exploration. Each day, I delved into the pages of the Bible, methodically traversing its contents from front to back. It was a ritual of devotion, accompanied by fervent prayer, as I sought to deepen my understanding of faith.
At the tender age of 17, I was honored with a significant gift—a gold-leafed Bible bearing my monogrammed name. This precious token of appreciation was bestowed upon me by my very first student and black sash, a gesture that touched my heart deeply. A cherished memento from my youth, it had remained untouched for 33 years, its pages holding the weight of countless memories and unexplored truths.
As I cracked open its cover for the first time in decades, I was struck by the profound symbolism of the number 33— the lifespan of our Lord Jesus Christ. In that moment, my mind was flooded with awe and wonder, as I contemplated the divine synchronicity of this revelation.
In that pivotal moment, I made a conscious decision to abandon my plans and instead embrace a life guided by divine direction. With unyielding trust, I followed the path that God laid before me, surrendering to His will with each step.
It was only when I relinquished control and surrendered everything to God that things began to unfold organically. I ceased leading and simply began to follow.
It was through the remarkable initiative of one of my beloved students, the leader of Hwa Rang Do Italy, that I found myself here in Luxembourg—an unexpected destination, yet one filled with great significance. Through a series of serendipitous events, orchestrated by God's hand, I was led to this small country nestled in the heart of Europe.
What makes this journey even more remarkable is the role played by a former teenage student—a young boy who, many years ago, faced my stern discipline after a mishap during a sword form competition. Little did I know then that he would emerge as a key figure in God's plan for my life. It's a testament to the unfathomable ways in which God works, using the unlikeliest of instruments to fulfill His purpose.
In February of 2017, after navigating through a maze of administrative and legal hurdles, I finally set foot in Luxembourg. All I possessed were a couple of suitcases. Everything I had accumulated over the span of fifty years had been taken from me, quite literally.
When I relinquished ownership of my dojang and entrusted it to another, I also left all my material possessions. Unbeknownst to me, when the instructor to whom I entrusted my Los Angeles school lost control of the business and was forced to vacate the premises, he stored all my possessions in a self-storage unit. In a cruel twist of fate, when he stopped payment for the storage, the owner of the self-storage facility auctioned off all my things to recoup some of the losses. All this became apparent to me when I received an unexpected email from a stranger, offering to sell me back a childhood painting I had once framed. It was surreal and somewhat humorous to say the least. Yet, amidst the irony, it served as a poignant reminder of the impermanence of material possessions.
For the next seven years, I found myself separated from everything familiar—my family, friends, and the comforts of home. In an unfamiliar foreign land where I didn't speak the language, I navigated through each day with only a handful of students and my faithful companion, Kilbo, by my side. Together, we faced the challenges of adjusting to this new chapter in our lives.
With no distractions and ample time for reflection, I delved deep into my own thoughts and confronted my inner demons. It was a period of solitude and introspection, where I sought solace in the companionship of my dog and the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit. In the midst of this isolation, I found renewal—a spiritual cleansing that reinvigorated my soul.
The word "Holy" carries the connotation of being set apart or separated, and indeed, that was precisely what I experienced during this time of introspection. While I do not claim to embody holiness, I humbly strive each day to better myself in the ways of Christ fully embracing my fallen nature.
After serving in a way my penance for seven years in Luxembourg, my intention was to return home to care for my aging parents and assume the responsibilities at our World Headquarters, allowing my father, my esteemed Hwa Rang Do master, to finally retire. However, God had other plans in store.
Despite my heartfelt announcement of my intentions to my parents during their visit to Luxembourg in 2023, my father gently but firmly insisted that I remain in Europe to continue my work. In his characteristic manner, he expressed his love and gratitude, assuring me that he did not require caretaking.
With his words resonating deeply within me, we embarked on the search for a new home with a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to our calling.
After scouring through numerous listings, we stumbled upon a promising yet humble abode within our budget— a fixer-upper nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Luxembourg. Despite its need for extensive renovations, it held the promise of becoming a nice single-family home.
However, our excitement was tempered by the seller's hesitancy to finalize the deal, leaving us in a state of uncertainty. With time slipping away and my family having returned home, I found myself shouldering the responsibility of house hunting alone. Undeterred by the challenges, I forged ahead, determined to find an alternative that would meet our needs and fulfill our aspirations of establishing roots in this foreign land.
Self-defense programs are very important nowadays due to the increase of crimes around the world and are more comprehensive than martial arts sports training.
The PFS program has been developed by military experts in the field of combat and high-level martial arts instructors under the supervision of its founder, Master Ahmed Al-Houli, and is now considered one of the most important combat programs in the face of real confrontations. Its practice has spread to several countries. An important program for both military and civilian personnel to protect society.
Rapid. Assault. Tactics.!!!
Rapid Assault Tactics, R.A.T., in practice this could be translated as: interception, pressure, conclusion.
R.A.T. is the spearhead of the PFS (Progressive Fighting System), a combat system coined by Paul Vunak, considered among the most feared streetfighters of all time, researched and developed for the US Navy Seals, adopted by Team Six as its primary combat program; due to its obvious and devastating effectiveness it was later adopted by other US armed forces such as the FBI, Marines, Rangers, DEA, CIA and more than 50 other departments of the US police forces.
The main characteristic of R.A.T. is the speed of learning versatile techniques adaptable to any hand-to-hand combat situation. A feature, this one, indispensable for security and armed forces specialists who need to learn in the short training time available to them techniques and strategies that are concretely useful and effective in operational situations. A fundamental feature also in self-defense, where the student learns to control and manage the different distances of combat, thus going on to develop all the concepts behind the study of real confrontation.
The conceptual triptych behind the R.A.T. is to destroy, literally, the blows brought by the opponent by using elbows and knees to immediately go on the counterattack with constant pressure, thanks to the strightblast ,so as to destabilize
“In R.A.T. training beyond the purely physical and technical part, a lot of importance is given to another part that is fundamental to combat preparation, namely stress inoculation, trying to reconstruct the physical and psychological reactions that may occur during a real confrontation.”
the opponent's balance and defenses, and then conclude with what is called the HKE (Headbutt-knee-elbow), a combination of devastating blows, perfect for the defeat of the opponent. In short, “destroy, press, finalize.”
R.A.T. is based on the primary concept of Jeet Kune Do, namely, that of adaptability; in fact, it is a system that can be adapted to any kind of work, whether in hand-to-hand or armed combat or massive attack (fighting two or more people).
We can develop this system in both self-perfection and selfpreservation, two pillars of PFS. Self-perfection is conditional training where we give importance to body structure, study distances, and refine technique more and more.
Self-preservation, on the other hand, is specific training in an uncontrolled environment where you put into practice what you have assimilated in the previous phase.
In R.A.T. training beyond the purely physical and technical part, a lot of importance is given to another part that is fundamental to combat preparation, namely stress inoculation, trying to reconstruct the physical and psychological reactions that can occur during a real
“Distruggere, pressare, finalizzare”
confrontation, such as: increased stress (precisely), sudden increase or collapse of adrenaline, fear and confusion; in this part of training we learn to react instinctively according to the situation or place we are in (e.g. a tight space or full of people, a sudden aggression or in an unexpected situation). In a high stress situation we are hardly able to think, and if we are not able to have an instinctive and functional reaction we can get the worst of it, even if we are good martial artists.
Speaking of statistics, it has been found that in a situation with a high degree of stress the reaction time increases by 58%, which is enough time to risk one's life.
Learning to keep one's cool in a difficult situation is the most important thing one can learn, which is why stress inoculation is a fundamental part of R.A.T. training and psychophysical preparation suitable for dealing with a real situation. A complete, functional and adaptable program that allows us to train body and mind, projecting us toward the reality of combat, internalizing techniques that are instinctive in the moment of need.
Alex Pugliano has been a practitioner of Jeet Kune Do Concepts since 1995, since 2002 he has been a direct student of Paul Vunak , in his more than 15 trips to California he has achieved all the degrees of PFS up to the Highest existing degree , the SENIOR INSTRUCTOR . He has held positions as the Regional Director Italy and then Regional director Europe, he is also Edge Weapons Instructor for police and military forces. The offices are in Turin for Italy and Barcelona for Spain.

The final test
Sato spent the whole way up to the top laughing. His elation was understandable, because it was a given that he would receive the menkyo-kaiden if he passed the final test. The euphoria had gone to his head like wine and he couldn't hide it. He thought he had succeeded. It all started that rainy day, a cold October morning. Sensei was testing us with a real sword. There were five of us. We were all facing sensei and he was approaching us like a hurricane, or so it seemed to me, as the rain poured down and the wind blew in my ear. The idea was not to blink when sensei brought the blade close to our eyes. Sensei always stopped the blade an inch from the eyes. I always blinked. So did everyone else. We couldn't help it. It was sensei's way of getting close. An involuntary reflex made us blink when the sword approached like lightning. Except for Sato, he just stood there.
The class stopped. -Sensei,” asked one of the students.
Why are we blinking?
No matter how hard we try, we can't help it.
Sensei replied:
- Because you have not yet developed the ability to reach the state known as “iwao no mi”. When the blade approaches your eyes, you unconsciously defend yourself, because of the fear of going blind.
That's why you blink. But you don't have to be ashamed of it. It takes a lot of training to develop a state of mind that does not change when you are in the dojo, in a stadium or on the battlefield.
Sensei went on to explain:
- For example, in the dojo you are relaxed and calm when you practice a kata, but during an exhibition you are tense, stiff and cannot do it as smoothly as in the dojo. The state of mind should be the same, wherever you are, in the dojo, in a stadium or on the battlefield. When you are able to not blink as the blade approaches your eyes, with confidence, from the depths of your soul, then you will be ready for the final test. Then and only then will you be able to say that you understand “iwao no mi”.
Sato was smiling like a cat that had just eaten a canary. He had heard many times that the final test was the easiest of all and the cutting edge test was the hardest. I firmly believe so. I can't imagine a more nervewracking test than an edge coming at your eyes with the force of a hurricane.
I could spend a lifetime training. The way sensei was approaching us made it seem like a miracle that he could literally stop just inches away. I know I wouldn't have been able to stop at that point, not at the speed sensei was approaching us. Even if I had had powerful brakes on my legs, he would have passed me by an inch or two. And we all knew that the one who passed the last test would someday receive the menkyo-kaiden from sensei. Sato said he was ready, not with words, but with gestures. It was still raining. Sensei instructed us to take a board nine meters long and ten centimeters wide. We left it on the ground, while the rain poured down on it, until it
was slippery. Then he asked Sato to walk on it back and forth. Sato did it with ease. We were all watching and the same thing went through our heads, “But what kind of test is this?”
When we got to the top, sensei stopped. We were standing next to a thousand-meter-high cliff, about eight meters from the opposite edge, with a fifteen-centimeter-wide log at the top that served as a bridge to the other side. It looked like a thin sliver of wood. Sensei asked Sato to cross over the log to the other side.
The rain was coming down hard. Sato was stunned. We don't blame him.
How was anyone going to cross over that log?
Sensei said:
- It's five centimeters wider and a meter shorter than the log that was on the ground. It should be easier - and sensei ran across to the other side over the log. None of us could move.
Sensei came back with us and we slowly made our way down, back to dry land. Sato was not smiling. We realized that “iwao no mi” (steady as a rock) did not mean stubbornness, but a state of mind that was the same in all conditions and not influenced by external factors.
Professor Maurizio Maltese presents in this extensive and detailed work the "Scherma Jonica", Ionian fencing, an art cultivated century after century, perfected and made more and more effective by constant practice in every district, village and town of the area straddling the Ionian Sea, between Calabria, Apulia and Basilicata, and with very diverse influences from pre-Roman, Greek, Byzantine and Norman peoples, as well as Spanish and French origin. The knife was the weapon available even to the poorest of men, the farmer and the herdsman, who used it in most of their daily work, from cutting a piece of bread to defending themselves against an aggressor (be it animal or human). As fighting became indispensable to assert one's rights, the need arose to train, to attend a teacher and sometimes a school. In the schools of arms one learned to use other elements in aid or in concert with the knives, such as the jacket to camouflage the blade, which, unbeknownst to the adversary, or the hat. Thus, in Ionian fencing, century after century, many ideas and traditions of different schools, distant in time and space, are mixed: it is obvious to think that each region, if not each Italian village, used its own and different techniques, if only because of the great wealth of forms that the knife had in the country, both in its daily use and in its offensive use.

More than a century ago, in our cities, men of different social classes still resorted to sword and saber duels to settle their disputes and in the streets one could meet thugs and muggers ready to use a knife. Times when it was common for a gentleman to leave the house with his cane, often animated, i.e. equipped with a hidden blade. Starting from the treatise of Master G. Martinelli (1908) "Trattato di scherma con bastone da passeggio" interpreted and integrated according to the methodology of the Nova Scrimia, masters Chiaramonte, Galvani, Girlanda and Proietti present a complete work on the use of the cane, which even today can be extremely valid and effective. For cane fencing, Martinelli draws inspiration from the Italian school of saber, with a classical approach, as well as boxing as a means of selfdefense: guard, strikes, parries, feints, spinning and circling steps, jumps, strong blows to the hand, arm, groin and terrifying jabs to the face. The stick placed in good hands is as good as a saber. Of course, it does not cut or pierce, it does not kill, but it brings to reason and, if necessary, brings even the fiercest offender to his knees.
