Have we forgotten our manners?
I went shopping for gifts over Thanksgiving weekend, and wished I had not. Pushing and shoving was rife, and no one seemed to have any idea what a "line" rvas about. Three cars into one spot do not go.
Did you read about the shopper who was knocked unconscious over Thanksgiving in the rush to save a few dollars, and was trampled on by Florida shoppers in a Wal-Mart frenzy? Have you noted in the supermarket that there is always one person who has 20 things in the basket in the "l0 Items or Less" lane? Or how when you are standing minding your
or.vn business and someone bangs into you, there's rarely a hint of a "sorry"? Or how many motorists cut you off on the freeway, often with their cell phones parked under their chins'i Or-my pet peeve-when you are in church or the cinema. or in the middle of a speech, and a cell phone goes off? Recently I needed to find a roofing company for a new roof-a large job. I cannot possibly explain in less than three chapters of my next book my frustration and the horrendous manners (let alone the appalling lack of salesmanship) of the majority of the roushlv dozen contractors I was
fbrced to contact. Calls went unanswered. callbacks never came, appointments were not met, bids arrived late or not at all, promises were conveniently forgotten, and stupid outright lies told.
Bad manners and rudeness are on the rise. A recent survey showed that over a third of respondents believed that the manners of Americans are poor. This was an increase of 5O% from the same poll in 2002. Now, none of us would admit to having bad manners. but that seems to me to be the problem. Bad manners are not just about holding a knife and fork; it is also about how we treat others and the respect we show for other people's time, opinions and beliefs.
Have you noticed when a business meeting is called how many arrive late-without often a hint of an explanation, and no matter that the c.e.o. is sitting around waiting? Or, during job interviews, how many arrive late or do not show at all without calling? No one says "please" or "thank you" any more. We have all become noncommunicative, and etiquette has gone out of the window.
Now lvho do you blame-parents, teachers, our youth, or technology? As I read the other day, "Technology was given to us, but the instructions were not."
At the end of the day it is up to each of us as individuals to take responsibility for our own actions. If you take it personally when someone does not call you back, make it equally personal that you call back when someone leaves a message for you.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers a very happy and successful New Year, and I pledge that all of us at Building Products Digest will do our level best to extend every courtesy and assistance to anyone who needs our help or advice.

E[OW about adding a third more lllumber to the framing package?
Lumber dealers are discovering that the raised floor system can do just that and a whole lot more, while meeting the higher expectations of today's homebuyer.
Lumber
dealers can
establish a market niche
by offering a distinctive and affordable alternative framing package.
Raised floor systems boost lumber sales

home realize lifelong benefits such as curb appeal, comfort, practicality and lasting value.
Ho*"o*ner advantages
Among the advantages of the raised floor system to the homeowner:
1 l. Classic stvle.
Homebuyirs are rediscovering the classic elegance that a raised floor design adds to the look of the American home. Drive through the older ncighborhoods of your community. The homes with ageless grace and beauty are usually raised. Visually, the raised foundation functions as a pedestal, enhancing curb appeal regardless of architectural style.
a Z. Uplifting comfort.
Inside the raised floor home, there are special qualities that nurture the body and soul. The feeling is warmer. more intimate. Remember that special place when you were a child, a tree house perhaps, where you felt cozy and safe? Raise the floor above the ground and your perspective changes. You feel more secure. An ordinary view from the window becomes a vista. There is calm and quiet above the din of street noise. The subtle "cushion" of a wood floor system provides a more comfortable walking surface, putting less stress on your back, legs and feet.
(Please turn to next page)
The raised floor system is nothing new. Since Colonial times. homes across America have featured an elevated floor, for reasons that are just as valid today.
"From the beginnings of architecture, well-designed homes have all had a top, a middle and a bottom," noted Baton Rouge, La., architect Kevin Harris. "The introduction of slab-on-grade foundations removed the 'bottom,' making homes look awkward. As I review home styles with my clients, typically the houses they like are elevated. A lot of this goes back to historical associations."
In regions where raised floors are not common, lumber dealers and builders can establish a market niche by offering a distinctive and affordable alternative framing package. Clients who invest in this type of

J. Enjoy the porch and deck.
^)
If it is not raised, a porch is not really a porch. Porches and decks are natural amenities for a raised floor system, adding usable living area to your home outdoors. Consider the charm and hospitality of a front porch, the pest-free privacy and comfort of a screened back porch. or a spacious deck for outdoor cooking, entertainment and relaxation. On slab, a "front porch" is just a front patio. The special ambiance you come to expect when gathering on a porch or deck can only be experienced with the raised floor system.
4. I nr"ti-e foundation.
The raised floor system has withstood the test of time. Southern pine is the strongest of all North American softwoods, so you can expect a lifetime of strength, stability and durability when framing with southern pine lumber. And today, modern pressure treatment adds long-term resistance to decay and termite attack.
5. .l simple foundation.
All foundations will settle, but use of piers with a raised floor system makes leveling or repairs simple. Repairing or leveling a damaged concrete slab can be very expensive. The raised floor is also less susceptible to disruption from tree roots.
t). Easy home improvement. Installation, maintenance and modification of utilities such as water.
sewage and electrical are comparatively simple with a raised floor. Remodeling? Plumbing fixture modifications are easy with a raised floor. (If relocating a toilet or bathtub on a slab foundation is necessary, get the jackhammer!) Routing and rerouting of electrical wiring is relatively easy and less expensive. If the home is raised high enough off the ground, air conditioning ducts can be installed below where floor registers can direct air closer to the actual living area; ceilings remain uncluttered.
7. Nrt...al insulator.
Why live on the cold, damp ground? Wood is a natural insulator. A properly constructed and insulated raised floor isolates a home from moisture problems and provides a warm, comfortable walking surface.
High and dry.
Flooding is a potential risk for many homeowners. A raised floor system could be the solution to raising your home's foundation above base flood elevation required by the National Flood Insurance Program. Considering other options-slab atop dirt fill, slab on backfilled perimeter wall, or ring levee-the raised floor may be the most practical and costeffective way to protect your property and meet local building ordinances in flood-prone areas.
9. Pest Control.
Most pests are ground dwellers. With proper barriers to control termites and other pests, your raised floor home will welcome fewer unwanted
guests. For optimum protection against termites, pressure treated and kiln-dried after treatment southern pine lumber is available.
L0. ntexinte landscaping.
Landscaping looks best around the foundation of the home. It helps "ground" the structure to the site. However, the installation of built-up flowerbeds and other landscaping against a slab foundation can invite termite infestation and decay. With a raised floor, landscaping can be located near the foundation without inviting this risk.
Furthermore, root-severing slab construction often demands the removal of existing trees in close proximity to the structure. Near a raised floor, beautiful and energy-saving shade trees can be preserved; only the footings of a raised pier-and-beam structure penetrate the root system, allowing trees to thrive.
C onstruction advantages
Homebuilders also benefit. Once the plans are finalized, the flexibility of the raised floor offers several advantages in the construction phase:
Easy scheduling - Construction of a raised floor may help accommodate the scheduling of trades, saving time. For example, concrete and masonry work does not have to wait on plumbing installation and inspection, which is the case with slab-on-grade. This can help expedite construction.
Poor soils, no problem - A raised floor can be a cost-effective solution to construction in poor soil conditions, where movement of expansive clays or the subsidence of orsanic soils is a concern.

Reduce cut and fill - For sloped lots, a raised floor on piers can be more economical and practical than building a "cut and fill" slab foundation. Less soil is disturbed, reducing erosion. The piers eliminate the need for reinforced retaining walls and other extraordinary measures to provide proper site drainage, and plumbing connections to city services may be simplified.
Value-added advantages
The raised floor system gives the homeowner and builder opportunities to explore ideas that can expand the livability and appeal of the home. For the lumber dealer, that can often translate into sales of additional materials.
fttundation system. Complete with detailed illustrations, photographs, and cost compurisons, "Raised Floor Systems: Design & Construction Guide" oJfers an in-depth look at the system's design and many advantag,es, while addressing basic constrLrction elements. The 48-page publication covers a wide range of related topics such as moisture control, soils and site preparation, foundation types, termiteresistant framing, design loads, span tables, and floor framing. Four case studies demonstrnte the versatility of raised floor construction.fbr both residential and nonre side nt ial buildin ps.

"The raised floor takes full advantage of amenities such as porches or a deck because they are natural extensions of the structure's elevated platform," said Richard Kleiner, director of treated lumber markets for the Southern Forest Products Association. "Inside the home, southern pine flooring is a great upgrade to offer the client. Another option the dealer and builder may suggest is termite-resistant framing of pressure treated lumber, kiln dried after treatment. Use of pressure treated lumber can be limited to the floor system alone or framing for the entire structure. Whole-house treated framing is becoming a popular option, especially in coastal areas."
Evironmental advantages
Finally, the raised floor is the right choice for the environment-it is a sustainable construction system. First and foremost, wood is a renewable resource that takes far less energy to produce than concrete or steel.
Second, construction of a pier-andbeam foundation in association with the raised floor system is far less disruptive to the natural surroundings than a slab-on-grade system. With a pier-and-beam foundation, less damage the root systems of neighboring vegetation occurs.
Furthermore. future structural modifications, additions or repairs can be more easily accomplished. Builders can complete these tasks with less risk of additional environmental damage, consuming less energy and avoiding expensive technologies.

Monroe agreed: "Thc -uron,ing concerns lvith code issues, including thc requircmcnts related to impact rcsistant proclucts in a large number of coastal areas, rvill stretch the linrits of rlany manufacturers' production capabilities in corning years."
Simonton. among othcr manufac-
turers, has expanded both its vinyl and aluminum product lines with additional window sizes, styles and options. "All it takes is one really ferocious storm a year-like Hurricane Isabelto prove that the inveslment in impact resistant products is extraordinarily valuable," Monroe said.
According to Simonton, builders and remodelers will also see increases in consumer requests for self-cleaning glass and advanced vinyl window construclion in 2004. "As rve move into
More energy-efficient products have resulted in an increased use of more glass per home.
2004. the next advancement the industry can expect to see is the growth of injection-molded fenestration products." Monroe said. "Gas and water assisted injection molding is the greatest step the industry rvill take in the next f-ew years. Windows manufactured with this process will yield
incredible strength with no need to clean the corners. These one-piece window liames are extremely attractive and very strong."
In addition to product advancements, Monroe strongly believes that window manufacturers need to support their customers in the selling and installation processes. "Manufacturers today must be business consultants to their customers." he said. "We need to get thoroughly involved in each customer's operations by helping them with business and marketing plans, lead generation programs and customer awareness.
He added: "It's no longer enough to just produce a top quality product. Now there's a need to support customers with showroom design and development, retail merchandising, and installation education. Window manufacturers who hope to excel in this industry must become the onestop resource to their customers for their every conceivable need."
According to Bridges, homeowners are the ones "demanding low-maintenance products. Vinyl and composite windows continue to gain popularity. Home-owners don't want the hassle of maintainins their home's exterior.
Component makers have responded by producing materials that require less time and cost to maintain. This has allowed window manufacturers to design products that have longevity and offer curb appeal. I expect this trend to continue to grow even in the most competitive markets."

TNCREASING the sales lprice of door packages to homebuilders -or convincing homeowners to undertake a door remodeling project-may be as easy as having them realize the difference raised panels can maKe.

For years the home buying market has dictated that builders need to include strong design elements as amenities. Raised panel interior doors are among the easiest and most affordable means of building architectural interest into a home. both in new construction as well as remodeling. The average house has 19 interior passage and closet doors, so there are many opportunities to customize the look of a room.
A door's design contributes much to the overall scheme of a room and, indeed, an entire home. Flush doors do their duty and not much else. Raised panel doors, however, offer the look of fine craftsmanship while allowing builders to customize a home's interior.
Many raised panel door designs are made of engineered wood to provide the decorative appeal of sculpted doors. minus the cost and maintenance of solid wood. As home buyers research their options, the inclusion of raised panel doors has increased steadily.
A recent survev bv the National

Association of Home Builders found that optional features were added to three-fourths of all new homes, and all of these upgrades occurred between the time the contract was signed and closing. For homes in the median price range, the price at settlement was nearly 57a higher than at the time of sale. This was consistent across the country for homes below $500.000. For more expensive homes, the increase was 9Vo.
Raised panel doors
offer the look of fine craftsmanship while allowing builders to customize a home's interior.
With consumers displaying their preference for smooth, tall (8 ft.) and solid core doors, builders are offering these options knowing that the result is higher profits.
For existing homes, raised panel doors are often used to economically replace wood doors inside vintage homes. or flush doors in homes built during the 1950s, 1960s and beyond. In fact. replacing every interior passage door with a new hollow core door costs less than a new chair and ottoman. Replacing every one with a solid core door costs less than a new sofa.
In remodeling jobs, homeowners often keep the existing frame and simply replace the doors themselves. For a fresh new look, they can purchase a pre-hung door and replace the frame.
"Home buyers want a house that reflects their personal style. They're looking for fine details, individual expressions, and ways to make their home stand out," said interior designer Sharon Hanby-Robie. "Raised
Because of their architectural styling and affordability, raised panel model interior doors are a popular choice among homeowners today, representing nearly 60Vo of total interior door sales. With low mortgage interest rates spurring new housing starts, the growth of raised panel interior doors has outpaced the total door category in recent years.

3 ke.ys fo amtingcustomer serrzice
By Dennis Snow and Teri Yanovitchbecomes an intrusion on the customer experience. These intrusions add up and result in customer concern. On the other hand, when customers sense an atmosphere of professionalism, care, and order, they feel a sense of confidence.
How many times have you seen employees in a business walk right by trash on the floor or a display that has been bumped out of alignment?
Employees who understand that everything speaks will take a moment to pick up some wadded paper and straighten the display because they know that such behaviors have a direct impact on the customer experience.
3. Create customer "wowst'

lf-r REAT service feels like a gift. It \fmakes us want to continue to do business with an organization over the long haul. And that alone is the secret to business success-retain customers by providing great customer service.
More than two-thirds of customers who defect do so because of poor service. So what can your company do to achieve customer loyalty? Assuming your products and prices are competitive, here are three simple steps to help ensure your customers stay with your company.
1. toot through the customer's lens
Because customers have a choice of where to obtain goods or services. a business must convince the customer that it truly cares. An engaged, caring employee raises the customer's confidence that the business is looking out for the customer's interests.
When that employee suggests a new product or service, the customer trusts that his or her best interest is at heart. On the flip side, if the customer senses a lack of caring, he or she will question the motives behind any recommendation.
Every business has its jargon, so be careful to speak in a language that customers understand. Successful businesses speak the language of the customer.
Complaints can be frustrating for customers and employees alike. As employees, we often can't understand why a customer is making such a big deal about a particular issue. Didn't the customer read the contract?
(Probably not.) Doesn't the customer understand that researching a problem takes time? (No. They don't.) Remember. it's not the customer's job to see through the business's lens; it's the business's job to see through the customer's lens and show an understandi ng of their frustration.
2. Everything speaks Imagine visiting a fine dining restaurant for a special occasion. You've been looking forward to the meal and you've heard good things about the restaurant. Then imagine noticing something crusty dried to your silverware and old lipstick marks on your water glass. Wouldn't You begin worrying about the cleanliness and quality of everything else in the restaurant? Everything speaks.
Now imagine a customer entering your place of business. She notices trash in the parking lot. Inside, she sees stacks of cluttered merchandise. She sees employees standing around eating and having personal conversations. It all detracts from your business's image. Consciously or unconsciously, it raises customers' antennae and makes them question, "Do I really want to spend my money here?"
The "everything speaks" philosophy means all employees understand that even the "little things" count. So pay attention to everything, including whether the physical environment is neat and clean, whether all necessary supplies are available, and whether employees are dressed appropriately. Anything that sticks out as "wrong"
Small gestures can create customer wows. Remembering a customer's name is a huge wow, as it creates a feeling of family. Letting a customer know that another product may better meet their needs is another wow. Sending a a handwritten note of thanks for a large order is a wow. Some wows are small and some are large, but make no mistake about it, wows add up.
One of the most powerful ways to create wows is to share best practices with fellow employees. Hold a company meeting so employees can share things they have done that dazzled customers. Just talking about these behaviors increases the likelihood that others will adopt some of the practices or create new ones of their own. It is also likely that some wows can become standard procedure, whether it's a grocery store bakery handing out fresh-baked cookies to children, or a vendor buying lunch once a month for salespeople.
Next time you're helping a customer, ask yourself, "Will my behaviors make this customer say or think, 'wow'?"
Excellent service is not about policy manuals. It's about excellent behaviors. When employees focus on excellent service, the results can be magical. The key is to make service excellence a habit. Encourage every employee to internalize these steps so they become habits. When employees focus on these principles, your company will achieve the most powerful result of all: intense customer loyalty.

Supplier Managed Inventory $h
WWvlfOOD.NET
The Wood lndustry Network
The combination of a happy customer and ease of effort creates a successful sales program. Through our Supplier Managed Inventory (SMl) Module, you can keep your products stocked to meet your customer demands without you or anyone else having to actively monitor the stocking levels or calculate replenishment requirements. Our SMI Module does it for you!
Program/Contract Sales Management

' lmproved Inventory Accuracy
' Increased Inventory Turns
' Reduced Data Entry and Errors
' Enhanced Business Relationships
' Additional Dollars to the Bottom Line
Our Program Sales Module keeps track of your customers inventory by product, by location and by the required time interval you need to replenish the appropriate stocking level. Inventory is monitored by our system against the minimum/maximum stocking levels you set for each product and each Customer siore localion, and against the inventory level for the available products in your inventory. The system will suggest replenishment levels that can be completed automatically or reviewed and over ridden by the user. The managing company determines the appropriate procedure.
Consignment Inventory Management
Some customers require that you keep certain levels of products stocked in one of their locations. You retain ownership of the products while located at their location and do not get paid until the products are shipped from their location. While it is essential to keep an agreed level of products stocked at the various locations, it becomes even more criticalthat you have accurate, up to date information to manage your inventory levels appropriately and make inlormed sales and shipping decisions with the inventory on hand at your sales site.
Our Consignment Inventory Module will allow you to monitor each location's inventory level against historical sales and shipments, consider in{ransit orders and ETA's, check on-hand inventory at your point of sale, and systematically recommend the level of replenishment by product and location' This will ensure that you will not have too much inventory sitting at the customer's location waiting for shipment, and allow you to get higher asset utilization from your inventory position.
Document Exchange and lntegration
The W3Net'" SMI module will enable your company to administer your program sales with minimum effort. Our technology allows you to leverage your computer system and your trading partner's system to create a seamless information flow that greatly reduces your data entry costs. The added electronic collaboration takes much of the pain from the program sale and increases the efficiency of your process, which saves you and your partner time and money.

Predictions of the death of distrbution channels are as old as distrbution itself. Butwhile other industries have seen massive consolidation, the supply chain serving the housing industry remains fragmented-and, in fact, has survived numerous attempts at disintermediation over the past half century.
ln this seminar, we'll draw from over 50 years of industry research and dozens of case studies to examine how and why the channel has consistently defied experts' predictons; explore threats and opportunities facing manufacturers, distributors, and dealers; and identify viable strategies for the coming decade.
Greg Brooks, CEO of the Building Supply Channel, Inc. and editor and CONSTRUCTION SUPPLY, is a nationally-recognized speaker on distribution trends who has conducted seminars for thousands of executives throughout North America.

sensible ironmentqlist
By Dr. Patrick Moore
for development or to grow something else.
This is a win for both the economy and the environment. Timber creates jobs, fuels economies and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue. The land stays forested, thus providing habitat for hundreds of species of wildlife. So long as we plant enough trees to satisfy the demand for wood. North American forests will be sustainable.
Dear Dr. Moore:
We hear a lot about tropical forests, but what can you tell me about the state of our own forests here in North America?
The news is good. North American forests cover about the same area of Iand as they did 100 years ago. Over the past decade our forests have expanded by nearly l0 million acres, according to satellite tracking data and two successive reports from the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization (State of the World's Forests, 1997 and 2001).
There are two main reasons for this. One is that advances in agriculture have enabled us to srow about
five times as much food on each acre of farmland. As a result. we've been able to feed a growing population without converting any more forests into farms.
Another reason, surprisingly enough. is that North Americans use a lot of wood. We've been led to believe that this is bad. that each time we buy a piece of wood we cause a little more forest to be lost. On the contrary, every purchase of wood sends a signal into the marketplace to plant more trees and grow more valuable product. lf we don't continue to use wood for building houses, making paper or crafting furniture, there will be little incentive to keep land forested. It could just as easily be cleared
Between them, Canada and the United States have about 1.75 billion acres of forest. About one billion acres are used to grow timber while the other 750 million acres are composed of parks, wilderness and non-commercial forest land.
Trees are the most abundant of the world's renewable resources and will continue to grow over much of the earth's surface indefinitely. I believe that a sensible environmentalist would weigh the facts and choose both to grow more trees and use more wood.
- Dr. Moore has been a leader of the environmental novement frtr more than 3O years. A co-.founder and .frtrmer president of Greenpeace, he holds a PhD in ecology and a BSc in.fbrest bioktgy. Send questkms to p at r i c k@ s e n s i b I e env i ro nme nt ali st.c om.

G-P Joins Wood Divisions
Georgia-Pacific, Atlanta, Ga., has merged its industrial wood products group with its structural panels and lumber units to form a new wood products division.
Combining the units allows G-P to operate one cohesive sales and manufacturing group. According to Dave Patterson, building products division president, "While these businesses will continue to make and sell their distinct product lines and focus on maintaining their leading positions in the building materials marketplace, there are distinct advantages to directly sharing the wood products manufacturing and sales expertise that each of these units possesses."
Over the last two years, G-P has been increasingly focusing on consumer products, while streamlining and looking for a buyer for its building products business. "We are proceeding as planned with our exploration of options for distribution, and the process is going smoothly and as timely as possible to achieve a positive outcome," Paterson said.
The new wood products division is headed by executive v.p. Ron Paul and Elliott Savage, senior v.p. of wood product sales.
Other units within G-P's buildins products group. such as the gypsum division, will remain separate.
Yard Locks Down Substitutes
Barrons Lumber, Gaithersburg, Md., is going the extra mile to sell alternative building materials, thanks to its new jobsite storage services.
"You have to compete on price, but you really succeed on service," said owner Terry Michnya. "That's why we came up with the BOSS program (Barrons On-Site Service) for our builder customers."

Designed to build loyalty, the BOSS program provides a trailer that can be padlocked during off-hours for storing Azek Trimboards, Trex decking, Masonite doors and Norco bulk windows and doors, all higher ticket items that might be vulnerable to theft or damage at the construction site.
"Some of these higher end doors are worth 920,000," said Michnya. "And a $6 million home can have about 80 to 90 windows."
The logos of the sponsoring companies are on the trailer, and it is provided free of charge to Barrons customers. The trailer can be unloaded
over three or four days at the crew's leisure, as they need the materials. "We just drop them off padlocked on site." he said. "The builders love it."
In a sense. Barrons Lumber is making a new name for itself. "You really can't call it a lumberyard anymore," explained Michnya. "There is so much demand for the man-made alternatives."

Rug Pulled From Under Gang
Three suspects have been arrested for allegedly switching the bar codes on rugs and cheating Lowe's and Home Depot out of $150,000.
Georgians David Oliver, 34; wife Mindy Oliver,38, and Marcus Abercombie, 33, reportedly affixed bar codes from less expensive items on pricey rugs at home centers in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. They would end up paying about $29 apiece for rugs worth hundreds of dollars each. According to investigators, the trio would later return the rugs for a refund in cash or gift cards.
Gift cards would be resold on eBay or at Abercrombie's pawn shop, or used to buy products the culprits would resell.
AF&PA Adds Wood Group
American Forest & Paper Association has formed a new Forest Products Group to enhance its suppotl of wood manufacturing, product acceptance and product promotion.
Aubra Anthony, Anthony Forest Products Co., El Dorado, Ar., is chair-
man of the new group, which would operate in a similar fashion to AF&PA's existing Paper Product Groups.

Tracking Reload Inventories Online
A major challenge in the reload industry is to track multiple inventories at one location in a timely fashion. Customers typically hold a variety of species and dimensions, which requires space and proper tagging procedures when the product arrives.
In addition, dealers and wholesalers want to have timely information at their fingertips as to what is on the ground and how long it has been there. This is market-driven. and also to satisfy the buyer's appetite to know that their products are being handled properly.
Typically, inventories on the ground are counted and reported once a month and summaries sent to the customer a few days later. The time it takes to physically count the entire inventory limits yards to once a month. Yet. with the increasing demand for up to date information, customers need summaries of their inventory weekly and perhaps even daily. This puts a high demand on your staff.
In this day and age of doing much of your business and personal transactions on the Internet, why not set up
customer access to their inventory the same way? North American Reload, Cloverdale. B.C.. had its inventory systems staff contact its Web page programmer to download the inventory data base to its Web site.
Now, its customers have the ability to view their inventories online 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The data is entered to the computer as soon as the lumber arrives at the reload to enable the customer to view data that is current and correct. This is achieved by tagging all units of lumber with a bar code unless it has a bar code from the source.
A unique identifier on each package allows the inventories to be divided up by customer. When they log on to the Web page with their own ID and password, they can view what they have on the ground at their convenience. This allows customers to identify units that are getting too old, and see when an item is overstocked.
"In the current climate of the lumber world, customers need an edge to be competitive and this ability to know what they have, and where they have it, gives them exactly that," said

North American Reload president Bradley Clarke.
The company introduced its online inventory last year for one of its cedar customers due to the complexity of the grades. "It had such a dynamic impact on them that we extended it to all of our customers," Clarke said. "Now, we are getting business simply due to this service."
Increasingly, wholesalers are working from home and on the go, so the ability to view their inventory on the road can help sales immensely. Even when working from the office, support staff may be bogged down with the never ending piles of paperwork that are involved when trading lumber, and too busy to answer an inventory question. Whether the trader can log on and view what is on the ground can be the difference between getting or not getting an order.
Correct and timely inventory information is a key to successful lumber trading. To have live access, at any time, to what you have on the ground is both helpful and vital to make good business decisions on a daily basis.

Save money by stocking Deep Swamp Cypress in place of redwood and cedar. This beautiful, versatile, all around species, for exlerior and interior use, finishes better than cedar or redwood and is more stable than southern pine.
We mill to your specs-any pattern siding, plus finish, S4S, fine bevel/bungalow sidings, 1" sidings, paneling, ceiling, wainscot stock and flooring. All kiln dried, from finish to common grades. No order too small.
