New San Francisco Yard Designed National Plywood Distributors For EconomicLumber Handling

The new nine-acre yard of Gamerston & Green Lumber Co. at the foot of Tunnel Avenue, San Francisco, is located in a new industrial district, just off Bay Shore Boulevard, ancl ideally situated ,both for delivery and for pickups by dealers.

A lot of thought was put into the designing of the ner,v yard, keeping in mind the basic idea of handling lumber as economically as possible. All lumber is handled by Ross lift truck and Ross carrier. Each item is piled separately by sizes, grades and lengths.

There is a large assembling and sorting area on tl-re north side of the entran,ce. The railroad spur track runs the rvhole length of the yard. Frontage on Tunnel Avenue is about 600 feet. The yard handles fir and redr.vood lumber. Wesley Collins is manager of this yard. Telephone is JUniper 5-6083.

Ponderosa pine, Sugar pine and plyrvood are handled at the yard at 1800 Army Street. Bob Bonner is in charge of this department, and John W. Gamerston is his assistant.

The company's general offices are still at 1800 Arrny Street, San Francisco. Harry B. Gamerston is president: Lu Green (Oakland yard),'is executive vice president; Frecl J. Ziese, Everett W. Lervis (Oakland yard), J. \\resley Collins, and S. 1!f. Wood are vice presidents.

Announces Opening Of 30-Day Training Course For Retail Lumber Personnel

Arrangements have been made by the Southern California Retail Lumber Association u'ith the University of So. California in Los Angeles to conduct a 30-day training course for lumber personnel starting Monday, October 6, 7947, subject, of course, to dealer support and student enrollment, according to an announcement by Orrie W. Hamilton, secretary-manager.

"As is rvell known, the leading colleges and universities in this area have been very badly crowded since the war, and they have been unable to accommodate all of the students rvl.ro u''isl-r to enroll. We, therefore, feel quite fortunate to be able to have the U.S.C. conduct this course of instruction at this time.

"This course has been successfully conducted l>y manv of the leading schools of higher learning during the past year or so. During that time the experience gained has been reflected in improved curriculum. This, we believe, rvill be to the benefit of the students.

"Many complimentary remarks have been made about the course by pleased Executives who had some of their employees take the course. Besides, those n ho have completed the work have said they gained more knowledge in 30 days by taking the course than they have gainecl by lvorking tu'o years in a yard.

"'The guides for conducting this 30-da1' course, as rvell as the lecture outline and improved text books, have been carefully prepared and are now reacly for use.

"The course has been approved by the Veterans' Administration for training of veterans under Public Larv No. 346. This means that tuition fee, text books, necessary instruction, and sustenance in the amount of $90.00 per n.ronth for married unemployed veterans, and $60.00 per month for single unemployed veterans vi'ill be paid by the Veterans' Administration.

"This course is open to all emplo)r'ees, or prospective employees, of any firm in the lumber industry. The instruction course rvill be conducted jointly by the faculty o{ tl.re University of Southern California and a staff of competent instructors from the industry, u'hose vital and practical approach to the subject provides students rvith firstl.rand inftirrnation regarding the u'ork they are to do.

"Full advantage is taken of displays, films, and other vis-

ual aids availlble for instructions. Field trips are taken to nearby retail lumber yards and millwork plants, and also to construction sites. Examinations are given throughout the 30-day session, and a certification is issued for satisfactory completion of the course. However, University credit will not be allowed toward a degree upon completion of this training course," Mr. Hamilton said.

The course content will conform in general to the following schedule:

'The classes will be scheduled to run each day from Monday to Friday inclusively during the hours from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a three-hour study period.

There are no rooms or dormitory space on the campus for students taking this course. Therefore, they must make their own arrangements for living quarters.

As rvill be noted, the course is quite comprehensive and complete, and the students n'ill be required to do a lot of home work to satisfactorily complete the coltrse. Text books will be supplied at a nominal cost; besides other material will be supplied to the students without cost. The tuitior-r fee for the course rvill be $50.00.

fn order that U.S.C. may stay u'ithin its budget allonance, the course rvill not be started unless there is an enrollment of 20 students or more.

f)ealers .ivho l,ish to enroll students in fhis course should advise the Association at a very early date so that proper arrangements can be made, The address is 111 West 7th Street, Los Angeles 14, Calif.

Survey Shows Strong Prelerence For Mirror Doors

The great popularitv of stock-design mirror doors is indicated by a survey conducted by Ponderosa Pine Woodu'ork among prospective home builders throughout the country. This survey indicates that 70/o of all respondents plan to have mirror doors in their norv homes.

Mirror doors, I]onderosa Pine \\roodrn'ork officials state, are rvidelv used because they provide the convenience of a full-length mirror, combined with tl-re utility of a door. Favorite places for mirror cloors are in bedrooms or in upper halls. Many master bedrooms have two mirror doors on adjoining closets, so tl-rat t'hen the doors are open tbe occupants can have a full "front and back" r'ielr'. Mirror doors are also popular for use in modern living rooms where it is desired to create optical illusions of greater space.

It tickles me

** to read Vagabond Editorials of years ago. For instance, in February, 1933, I was writing about the American railroads, and making very generous predictions concerning the revolutionary improvements that might be expected on the rail lines. And I hazarded this opinion: "All Pullman cars will some day be air conditioned and cooled, and probably all passenger cars the same way." Riding on the air conditioned trains todtay it is hard to realize or remember that just 14 years ago such luxuries existed only in the realm of prophecy.

\ Henry Ward Beecher got a letter from a young man who \was looking for sdmething soft in the line of a job, and \- \ranted Beecher to help him find it. Beecher wrote him: \$aou cannot be an editor; do not try the law; do not think of the ministry; let alone all ships and merchandise; be not a farmer, a soldier, or a sailor. Don't study. Don't think. None of these are easy. O, my son, you have come into a hard world. I know of but one easy place in it, and that is the grave."

Looking at the price of food shown on restaurant price lists of late, my mind goes back to the "Hay Baler's Breakfast" that I once saw offered on the bill-of-fare at a plain Coast highway cafe in California, back in 1940, and I wonder how I wonder, what a meal like that would cost today. This is the way the bill-of-fare read: "Hay Baler's Breakfast: 6 eggs, any style; 2 big slices of ham; 2 slugs of French fried potatoes; 6 slices of toast; all the coffee you can drink; price 85 cents." Can you believe it? And the best thing on the card was the printed query that followed: "Is there a man in the house ?" * * ,6

It has been remarked and repeated innumerable times of

Back in 1940 Will Rogers went to England to look things over. He wrote back to the United States newspapers that they had solved their farm problems over there BY WORKING THEIR FARMS. This sly, Will Rogers type dtig, was made at the expense of the then American plan of curtailing farm production to solve OUR farm problem. For some time now, as the British government admits, production in England, particularly in the vital coal mines, has been dropping off. Looks like what they need to do with their industries is what Will Rogers said they were doing with their farms b;ck *in 1940: work them.

In the words of Kipling "they're drinking bitter beer" in England these days. Witness the bitter words of one of the outstanding British labor leaders who was discussing the hours of labor in the coal mines: "What our comrades are asking for is greater leisure to eat less food, more time to wear fewer clothes. to drink less ale, and to smoke fewer cigarettes."

British heartbreak at present conditions that have come to a nation that fought valiantly through one of the darkest wars in history, sometimes bursts into print. Not long since British pigeon racers loosed thousands of their homing pigeons from a point on the continent, so that they might race back home. Most of them never returned to England. One of the most popular London columnists commented on this fact, and stirred the nation with this query: "We11, would YOU come home?"

A British leader, ""k.d* ";"J low production and high absenteeism in British industry, said lack of incentive is the great depressing force. More money, he said, means nothing to British labor, since the shelves are bare and there is practically nothing that money can buy. It is hard to sit here on this side of the Atlantic and conceive that such conditions can be. *>k*

To get my perspective adjusted, I turned back the pages of these Vagabond Editorials to the winter of 1940-41 when England, with her back to the wall, was performing unheard-of miracles of valor. And I found myself writing these words: "Yes, f befeve in my heart that there will always be an England. And if there is, it will be because God Almighty has given of His own strength to an heroic

people. I've read a lot of history, but the demonstration of pure and unadulterated valor that John Bull and his people are furnishing in Britain today, seems to surpass anything since this world began. That same spirit that filled the breasts of Travis and his gallant band when they climbed to the topmost heights of immortality behind the blood-stained walls of the Alamo, lives again in the hearts of the British. What they have done in the past year immortalizes them, also.

"Can you imagine pi"r.i"g * ,*, newspaper some morning to read the shocking news that Britain has fallen, has been over-run by the hordes of Huns? Can you think what a pall of darkness would settle down upon the minds of all men here at home if such a thing should come to pass ? It would be like unto that darkness that settled ddwn upon Golgotha at the passing of the crucified Carpenter. No, England MUST be saved !"

x>t*

I still hold that same feeling for England. How almost unbelievable it is that with the war over and won, she finds herself again in great danger-almost as great, they say, as when Hitler's armies snarled at her across the narrow channel. Much of her present tragedy-sad to relate-lies at her own door. A lot of it was hard luck and ill fate. Regardless of the cause, England's situation today is both sad and deplorable. For today, as always, the fate of England is closely allied with the fate of America.

The fellow *no f"..til.r.r] .uf*."ts that we "give the country back to the Indians," may not be' kidding. Consider the case of the Menominee Indians in Wisconsin. mentioned in the news sections of this issue. Back in 1908 this tribe built a sawmill on a big tract of timber land comprising part of the reservation. At the same time they started practicing scientific forestry on the land, seeking a sustained yield of timber to keep the mill going. Well, neighbors, it looks like "they done it." Thirty-nine years after they started their operations in a mill that has cut twenty million feet of lumber every year since (the law that created the mill fixed that rate of cutting), they find that there is more commercial timber standing on their land

than when they started. In fact, they will probably have to increase the annual cutting rate of the mill in order to keep up with the timber growth. If all the Indians are like these Indians, giving the country back to them might be a swell idea. Mighty few pale-faces have ever done so well with what God gave them.

You can't help wonderl"*.*rL. gift of prophecy these people must have had thirty-nine years ago, that permitted them to fix that twenty million foot figure. It was almost a perfect prediction of their timber crop. And that at a time when not a handful of men on earth could tell anything in advance about a timber crop. They have raised and cut Northern White Pine. Eastern Hemlock. various other Northern softwoods, and various Northern Hardwoods. And the twenty million annual cut has kept the saws right back of the tree growth. You can scratch your head over that one, my friends. Nobody less than the seventh son of a seventh son could have made so remarkable an estimate. They started with 750 million feet of timber. They have cut from that tract 780 million feet of lumber, and now they find themselves with about 800 million feet of timber left standing. After this when you suggest "giving the country back to the Indians," don't be so sure it's a joke !

And furthermore, dear friends, think what a reflection this is on thousands of the brightest and smartest men the lumber industry of the nation has produced. Back in 1908 when they established this Indian sawmill and planned to run it to perpetuity, a grand crop of lumbermen were whittling away at the forests of the South and West. Giants they were in many ways. They seem to have lacked one thing that those Menominee Indians had; foresight. How many of those strong, forceful, brighteyed men ever gave a thought to running their mills perpetually? Yet most of them were cutting faster growing trees than were those Wisconsin Indians. It would have been easier for most of the big softwood operations to plan a perpetual cut than it was for those Indians. But why go into that? Let's just tip our hats to the Menominee River Indians and their big mill that will run always; and, looking back over the sawmill history of the white race, repeat Abe Lincoln's favorite poetic philosophy, that "of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these-it might have been."

Lumber Production Climbing

Washington, D. C., August 8, 1947.-Lumber production continued to climb in all regions of the country during the first six months of 1947, the National Lumber Manufacturers Association reported today. Output totaled 15,687 million board feet in the first half period, the Asso' ciation said. This is an increase of 11 per cent over production in the first half of 1946. The industry is confident that this year's total will better the high production record of last year, NLMA declared.

Operations in the woods and at the mill, despite shortages of skilled labor and machinery, are keeping pace rvith the terrific demand of the Nation's building program. The "lumber shortage" is over, the Association said.

Last year's production of 32 billion board feet reversed a four-year downward production trend and approached tlre war-time high of 36 billion feet in 1942.

Regionally, the Western Pine area leads off with the biggest increase-16 per 'cent over the same period of last year. Productron in this region totaled 2,927 million feet. Southern Pine, with a total cut of 3,997 million board feet, shows an increase of 14 per cent over the first half of last year, and the Douglas Fir production is up 9 per cent, with a total of 3,425 million board feet.

Hardwood flooring, sash and mill work are still in short supply, ,but the supply of general construction lumber in most grades and sizes is more than adequate, the Association said.

The trouble with hell is that when you get there you have to stay so long. As far as you can look in every direction everything is sand. Sand, just sand, and still more sand. Well, now, suppose a little bird flies down and picks up a single tiny grain of sand and fies away with it. Now, a million years later, another little bird flies down and picks up a grain of sand, and carries it away. And in another million years another little bird flies down and picks up a grain of sand and flies away with it. Well, brothers and sisters, by the time the little birds carrying away one grain of sand every million years have carried away all the sand on the seashores in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, well dearly beloved, by that time it wouldn't be sun-up in hell vet."

Big ilIill 0porates In Perpetuity-Timber firowth [xesds Cut

'Ihe Moore Dry Kiln Company, of Jacksonville, Florida, has been using some of its advertising space of late to publicize one of the most interesting sawmill operations in the entire country; that of the Menominee Indian lzlills. located at Neopit, Wisconsin. The fact that a battery of the latest style Moore cross-circulation dry kilns are in use at the mill gives Moore a chance to tell something very briefly about this outstanding example of managed timber conservation. Here is the story, in short:

In 1851 the Menominee Indian Reservation was established by treaty. It comprises ten townships in Northern \\risconsin, totaling approximately 234,000 acres. Of this total, about 175,000 acres is commercial timber land stocked 'ivith timbers of all ages and sundry species, chiefly Northern White Pine, Eastern Hemlock, and the various Norttr.. ern Hardwoods.

In 1908 a timber and sawmill operation on this land was created by an act of Congress, and the Indians went into the sawmill and timber raising business, operated by them under government supervision. The same act limits the production of lumber to twenty million feet annually. -fhey had the timber cruised and estimated and it was found that there was about 750,000,000 feet of timber on

the land. They have been cutting twenty million feet of lumber from the land annually since 1908, and practicing the most scientific and practical forestry with their timber growing.

A letter from John W. Libby, Forest Supervisor, to this journal just a few days ago, makes the following statement: "They are at present cruising this timber again, and while they are not nearly through with the estimate, the indications are that there is at least 800,000,000 feet of commercial timber now standing on their acreage, an increase <.,f 50,000,000 feet over their original holdings at the time they started cutting. So it appears that they have not only grown sufficient timber to keep their mill cutting their annual allowable, but they have gained 50,000,000 feet in reserve tim, ber." He further states that there is every indication that they not only can continue to make twenty million feet of lumber a year perpetually, but that it is anticipated that the allowable annual cut may necessarily be increased in time to come as additional young areas come into commercial size.

It may be thoughtfully observed that those who decided on the annual allowable for this mill's oroduction were possessed of exceptional foresight.

New Grading Rules Book lssued On \(/est Coast Lumber

A new and attractive grading rules book on four species of West Coast lumber has just been mailed to over twentyfive thousand retail lumbermen, architects, lumber specifiers and government officials, accordirig to H. V. Simpson, manager West Coast Bureau of Lumber Grades and Inspection. Effective date of the new Rules No. 14 was August I and they replace book No. 12 r,r'hich has governed the industry since March I, 1943.

The new grading and dressing rules book will become one of the most popular lumber publications released in many years, believes Manager Simpson. Letters from Lumber distributors from all parts of the nation attest to the wonderful reception accorded this book.

The rules have been published in two editions, a handy pocket size for use by graders and others around mills and yards; and a large book size for use by salesmen, sales managers, architects, engineers, retail lumber dealers, specifiers and others.

More than forty tl-rousand copies have been published and extra copies may be purchased from the West Coast Bureau of Lumber Grades and Inspection, 1410 S. W. Morrison Street, Portland 5, Oregon.

Lay, head of the hardwood department of Commercial Lumber Co., r.vhich sells through Manufacturers Lumber Co., Los Angeles, has visited mills and logging camps using as methods of transportation oxen, horseback, riverboat, train and plane, but never until last month was he forced to make an important trip to a northern mill while confined to a rvheel chair.

"I spent several days at one of our mill connections while f couldn't walk a step, owing to an attack of arthritis. I used train and taxi one leg of the journey, which \r'as more than 10O miles, and all the while confiend to my wheelchair," Mr. Lay said.

Well, you can't keep a fellow like this down, and the staff of The Nferchant wishes him a speedy recovery.

Digest Available Without Chcrrge OI Forest Lqws crnd Prcrctices

Pocket manuals containing a digest of forest laws and practices of the Douglas fir region have just been published by the Joint Committee on Forest Conservation, according to Warren G. Tilton, forest engineer.

The easy-to-understand, pocket-size booklets cover state laws on conservation and protection requirdments in logging camps, Tilton pointed out. State forestry lar,vs anrl alnendments passed by the legislatures of Oregon and Washington this spring are included in this forest law digest.

One booklet has been published on Oregon forest larvs and one on Washington forest laws, because of some variation between the forestry laws of the two Douglas fir states. Simple, 'pen-and-ink sketches liven up the text and illustrate pertinent points.

Tilton advises that both the Oregon and Washington forestrv pocket manuals are available in limited quantities and may be obtained without charge by writing foint Committee on Forest Conservation, 1410 S. W. Morrison Street, Portland 5, Oregon.
